The DVD player works as it should, and the picture looks great. No complaints there. It would earn 5 stars except for the lack of ability to generate 5.1 sound with a direct connection to my sound system. I dont know if I can get it out of the TV set with a HDMI connection. On: 2008-07-07
Excellent picture quality from 480p to 1080p. I cant say I see a noticeable difference beyond 720p, but that is most likely due to the limitations of a standard definition DVD. The newer a movie/dvd is, the better it seems to look on it. For example, The Matrix didnt look quite as impressive visually as when I tried putting in the Transformers movie, which looked outstanding. This will definitely tide you over on any new HDTV until blu-ray comes down in price. ($30+ a movie? No thanks!)
The menu system as others have said, is archaic. Its hard to navigate and hard to understand at points, but it works. Dont bother spending too much money on an HDMI cable if you werent sure. I use the 6ft HDMI cable that came as a special purchase with this player for only a penny more and it worked great. Not to mention this model is cheaper than most Ive seen in stores. Philips is the best for up-conversion players in my experience working in a home entertainment store. You wont regret it. On: 2008-07-07
Muy Buen Equipo, me permite verº todos los formatos que bajo de internet ademas de los DVD convencionales. Lo recomiendo.
La unica contra es que un poco lento para algunas funciones. On: 2008-07-07
This Philips DVD player was bought to replace an earlier version purchased almost 3 years ago. That model finally went psycho, doing many weird things during playback, such as suddenly deciding there was "no disc", etc. Perhaps a diet of daily power interruptions, rather dusty environs, and occassional extremes of arid heat and chilly dampness accelerated its demise.
This newer model is not coded for, nor have I a code to make it, "all regions" unlike the programming I found for the old one. Still if only NTSC & PAL discs are in your collection, it does the job just fine. The white remote is a color choice that will show dirt very soon, but the DVD unit itself is great, is thin so it fits in tight cabinets on top of the TV, looks good, and was delivered VERY quickly at a great value price. Not over-loaded with lookit my new toy bells and whistles that nearly no one uses, but still not as intuitive as the older model. No matter, having had the first one, had no hesitation to buy this as a replacement, and will likely go back for a similar model when this one finally dies.
I could not test the up-converting feature as my multi-zone/multi-voltage tv is not HDTV capable, so I have no such discs in my collection at this time. All said and done? BUY IT!!! The Amazon price is again excellent, as was the service. - JS On: 2008-07-05
Works great with my JVC Hi-def TV. Picture improvement over regular DVD player is slight but noticeable. Simple to use, great price. I am considering buying another one for another TV. On: 2008-07-05
Great player, shows all my DVDs regardless of the source. This is my second Phillips DVD player, this player upconverts, the picture is great. I bought this DVD player to use with my new 1080p LCD TV. My experience with Philips led me to buy this DVD upconverter. I have had other DVD players that play some disks but not others. The only flaw is the remote, but, Ill live with it... On: 2008-07-05
I bought the Philips DVP6082 primarily to make use of the USB connection on it. I plugged a big hard drive into the USB port loaded with about 500 sitcom episodes and around 20 movies. The content is a mixture of DVD rips, downloaded video, and things Ive recorded off the air using the TV tuner card in my PC. I have yet to find any video format the device cant play. Its an inexpensive way to set up a media server and the output looks pretty good.
The DVD upconversion looks good too, and I havent had any problems with it. I recommend this device. On: 2008-07-03
I knew nothing about upscaling DVD players until I bought my Samsung LN40A550 40-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV and saw Amazon had this player listed as a sauggested purchase with it. I did some research and talkerd to a friend who knows about this stuff and decided to buy it.
Boy am I glad I did! I connected to my TV with a 10G monster HDMI cable and the picture is amazing. There was no way I was going to convert my DVD collection to Blu-Ray, so this was the perfect solution.
I also love the slim look. On: 2008-07-02
For $60 this dvd player does its job very well. I dont have any young children and I dont think this player would hold up under any kind of roughness that kids might give it. You get a lot of control over the picture and I guess thats a good thing. Some people complained about the remote lacking different things, but I kind of like it that way. On: 2008-07-01
For the price, this product does a great job upscaling regular DVDs to 1080... I am more than happy with it. On: 2008-06-28
This DVD player is the biggest piece of s*** ever. I have always owened Toshiba players, but when my last one gave out the only brand they had at Costco was Phillips. NEVER AGAIN! The interface sucks, is very limited. The remote hardly has any thing other than basic features. Maybe they thought a memory option was cool, but when I take a movie out and then start it again, I do not want the DVD player to remember where I was. Just start the DAMN MOVIE! THis thing is a big waste money. DO NOT BUY IT! If you dont care about your player, fine, then buy it. But if you watch a lot of DVDs and appreciate a good player, AVOID THIS ONE LIKE THE PLAGUE! On: 2008-06-26
This product is terrible. The controls are extremely slow to respond. After you turn it on there is time to mix a cocktail and come back before it actually shows signs of life. I have had this player for five months and now it will not work at all. On: 2008-06-26
If you own a multi-system television (or a PAL television), you should be aware that all current USA Philips DVD players (including the 5982 and any models made thereafter) have the "TV Type" selections disabled in the firmware. The ONLY choice of output system (for U.S. machines) is NTSC, which is fine for most people, but if you have a multi-system TV, this means your PAL discs are going to undergo an unnecessary standards conversion (to NTSC).
All other worldwide versions of Philips machines still have NTSC, PAL and MULTI as choices in the "TV Type" menu. Why was it removed for the USA? My guess was to end calls to customer service for people complaining about black-and-white pictures (MULTI used to be the default choice back when US machines included all three types).
The 5960 is the last US model of this type/price point (including a USB port) to come with changeable TV type options, FYI. On: 2008-06-25
Theres obviously lots of feedback on this unit, some of which actually gave me pause before electing to order the Philips DVP5982. On the off chance you may be similarily questioning this player due to previous reviews, particularly complaints or concerns, heres my take.
First of all, yes its a region free player...no little accomplishment for a DVD player and at this price point (I paid $49.00 which included free shipping) an unbelievable bargain.
Secondly, despite some reveiwers observations, the unit required little or no set-up...its a simple HDMI plug and play procedure unless you have an odd assortment of equipment which seems unlikely if your purchasing an upscaling player for your HD plasma or LCD TV.
Addtionally, it plays everything Ive thrown at it flawlessly with no need to re-adjust any settings between various discs.
Speaking of settings, the menus while "boxy" or old-fashioned as some have complained are nonetheless easy to navigate and clear as to the directives. Frankly, given the aforementioned features, how picky do you have to be to carp about the asthetics of the menu design? Still, if youre purchasing a DVD player to gawk at the menu set-up design then I suppose this player isnt for you.
Working in the TV production industry I spend no little amount of time looking at HD content and while this player isnt going to match true HD it does deliver an exceptional picture able to satisfy the most exacting viewer.
The remote is FINE...like the other aspects of the unit its about function and value. So no, you wont run and show your friends your new DVD player remote but it feels and looks like a thousand other remotes...no better, but certainly no worse or "cheaper" than the next.
Frankly, I rarely ever bother to write product reviews but I was so impressed with this Philips player I felt compelled to let would-be buyers know its a steal.

This DVD player plays videos well. My issue is that there is not a separate skip forward and search forward button. In order to search forward (or backwards), one needs to hold down the skip forward button. This doesnt always happen and sometimes when i try to search forward a little bit the disk skips forward to the next scene. Would it be so hard to have the additional button? Even when I use the universal remote it still has this problem. On: 2008-06-22
I bought this DVD player to use with my new HD LCD TV with 1080p. The quality of the picture is about as good as HD from a regular DVD. In addition this player accepts all formats of CDs that I have and all formats of jpeg, wmv, mp3, etc on any CD, DVD or USB drive. The only glitch I could find, and it might be with the TV and not the player, is the screen format switches periodically between wide screen and full screen on some movies. I did not plan my purchase well, however. After I bought the DVD player I looked at some home theater packages, and all of them came with DVD players, including Philips, which has an upscaling player. So, if you are not going to get a home theater, but want to watch DVDs using your TVs 1080p capability, then this player is the one to get. On: 2008-06-18
I got this on a suggestion for a DVD player that supports many formats and includes USB support to play my digital media. I found that the usb support is slow crap and it stutters on active scenes. The same avi file recorded on a DVD would play fine but je je je jerk from the usb drive. Pretty much regret the purchase. On: 2008-06-16
Overall I am pleased with this dvd player. It does everything I need and having the usb input on the front of the player just makes it that much better. This thing plays everything, I have yet to pop in a dvd and it not play (I watch a lot of burned movies.) I recommend this to anyone, It is great. On: 2008-06-14
This was the first time I purchased a Philips product, and it will certainly be my last. The Philips DVD player was not compatible with my Toshiba 37AV500U-37 when connected with a HDMI cable, i.e.; the TV screen would go to a blue-blank state anytime the DVD player was turned off, and the TV would not respond to remote control commands. I e-mailed Philips and received the follow mindless & insulting response, "You need to contact the manufacturer of your TV for assistance since this DVD works fine."
I returned the Philips DVD to Amazon (5 stars for Amazons customer service!)and purchased a Sony DVP NS700H/B. The Sony DVD, of course, worked fine with the HDMI cable connection - just like every other Sony product I have purchased. Sony DVP-NS700H/B 1080p Upscaling DVD Player, Black On: 2008-06-14

I bought this upscaling DVD players for my bigscreen HDTV. So far, I am not all that impressed. I had an older model progressive scan DVD player hooked to my TV before, and to be honest, I dont notice any difference in picture quality. The picture looks nice now, but it looked just as nice before in my opinion.
One thing that really annoys me about this unit is the loading tray. It takes quite awhile for it to open when you push the button, so much so that you end up pushing it twice and then it "loads" instead of opens before you realize that you shouldnt have pushed it again. I am not a super impatient person, but it just seems to have quite a delay on it. And as other reviewers have said, it is very flimsy. So flimsy in fact that I actually made the mistake of tipping the DVD player back and my DVD fell out of the tray and INTO THE UNIT!! I had to take apart the unit to get my DVD out. That was annoying. The remote control is very cheap feeling as well and has limited choices. And why is it gray when the unit is black??
THe unit does look sleek, has worked fine and I got it at a good price so overall I am happy with it, just not impressed. On: 2008-06-10
FYI: It will play .wmv. It will not play dts-CD as my 3 year old Panasonics will. .flv would really be something. S-video out is missed. Still it saves hours dubbing video from the computer editor to the TV/DVRs in another room. On: 2008-06-09
Ive had the Philips PET1030, a portable DVD player, for almost a year and got very used to putting video files on a flashdrive and playing them without hassling with DVDs. I finally decided to get a non-portable unit for the living room to take advantage of the same capabilities, and the DVP5982 didnt disappoint. It plays almost every file format I tried, including AVI, MPEG (MP4), DivX, and Xvid. I couldnt get it to play Matroska files. We havent used the DVD drive much, but from the few movies we have watched things look good. See other reviewers for more info on DVD playback and video quality. On: 2008-06-09
The device is functionally very good. The reason I tried this is that it had DIVx compatibility. I can put six 700MB movies in AVI format on one DVD and display them perfectly. The limitation is in the lame remote. It is difficult to use in the DIVx mode and the titles must be very short. I have yet to find a way to stop the current movie and view another on the list. It seems like you have to turn off the machine. If they would change the remote it would be a 5-star product. On: 2008-06-08
The Player does a good job at up converting and on new films the quality looks good enough for me to be content with what I have till prices on Blue Ray players become reasonable.
The USB hard drive feature is an awesome bonus. I played mpeg format files from my WD "my book" and TV shows seemed to play fine although movies w/ larger files seemed to chug at points. The make shift remedy seemed to be pausing it for a couple seconds to catch up, but Id imagine that if it was re compressed w/ divx (or anything thatd bring it down to a smaller file size) that itd play smoothly through out. I was hoping that this feature would allow playing 1080P files but searching further found that it doesnt support a resolution higher than standard definition- you can up convert these files though.
If you just upgraded to an hdtv for the first time youre gonna be happy with this purchase.

I have 3 of these dvd players. The first one that I bought I hooked up to my new Sony TV. Excellent picture. Then the CD player that I have in my stereo system went on the fritz. Now I am a classical music listener and am very serious about sound quality. A really good replacement for my old cd player would cost me about $300, and I really didnt want to spend that if I didnt have to. I hooked up the DVP5982 and was pleasantly surprised to find that it had real audiophile sound quality. So I bought one for my stereo. Then I decided to get one for the bedroom TV. There are 2 very minor negatives to this player: 1) the drawer takes about 5 seconds to open and, 2) the drawer is very shallow and you have to be sure the disc is properly centered before closing the drawer. As I said these are minor shortcomings and I would definitely give the DVP5982 five stars. On: 2008-06-07
It worked right away as I plugged it in. I already own a VCR and so now I have plugged in the DVD player and VCR into my TV, and it all works well. Picture quality is great, and so far nothing has broken on me. However I had to buy a component video-audio cable to plug it and my VCR into the TV simultaneously. That cost me an extra $10. A few days ago I didnt even know such deal exists! Region Code Free? 1080p upconversion? $60? Free shipping? 30 years ago I got to know the Philips brand and this DVP5982 is the first Philips product I ever owned. And this is the best deal I ever had! Thanks to Philips and Amazon as well as Internet for making this happen!! On: 2008-06-06
I received my Philips DVP5982 1080p Upscaling DVD Player today and it works great! I did not experience any of the problems reported by some reviewers. It could be that the latest software has fixed the problems they experienced, or their unit was damaged in shipping or mishandled. The unit is fragile and must be handled with care. It is a slim design so nothing should be put on top of the unit, and free air circulation should be allowed around the unit for cooling. Also the tray is thin and must not be stressed, and the DVD or CD must be placed carefully in the shallow indentation. Philips could have made the unit big and heavy and strong, but the slim design looks great and doesnt take up too much vertical space. It sits on top of your cable or satellite box and is almost invisible.
The firmware version was 37.07.56.22 so I did not have to update it since the firmware update available from the Philips website is 37.07.32.43.
I enabled HDMI on my SONY 46" 1080p HDTV and connected the Philips DVD Player to it with a HDMI cable. I changed the region code on the player from 1 (US) to 0 (All Regions). I had recently purchased Celine Dions Live in Las Vegas (2007) DVD but could not play it on any DVD player because it was made in the UK and is recorded in PAL (European) format instead of NTSC (US) format. It worked on my laptop, but who wants to watch a concert on a laptop. I was about to return the DVD, but upon researching on the internet, decided to buy this DVD player. The Celine Dion DVD worked beautifully and we watched the concert once again on the big screen TV. The DVD Player upscaled the DVD to 1080p. I have also ordered Planet Earth - The Complete BBC Series DVD with David Attenborough to watch on this upscaling DVD Player since I am not yet ready to buy a BlueRay Player or a PlayStation 3. There is very little difference between 1080p up-conversion and the real thing. Plus your entire library of old DVDs and downloaded movies can be up-converted, as well as rented DVDs. Also your camera pictures are displayed in full 1080p resolution (2 megapixels). On: 2008-06-01
We have had this DVD player for about 6 months. It no longer turns on or functions in any way. We consider this an unreliable piece of hardware and at this time I strongly recommend against anyone else buying it. On: 2008-05-29
To go along with my HDTV purchase, I decided to get an upconverting DVD player. I didnt seek out this one for any reason, except that it was inexpensive and I thought the USB port sounded cool.
Wow, it is awesome. Standard DVDs look great. It displays videos great in 16x9. No complaints for DVDs.
However, the best part about it is the USB port. I copied a video file from my computer onto a thumb drive and plugged it in. It worked great - even upconverted my AVI and displayed it 16x9. No concern about codecs or encoding schemes - no problems at all. The USB port is a fantastic feature.
This is a great product. The only concern I have is that the menuing system is a bit difficult to use. I found it tough to figure out how to navigate - it is a bit non-intuitive. However, given the good features of this DVD player, and the low price, I can hardly fault Phillips at all. This is a great product. On: 2008-05-24
Bought this DVD player when I upgraded to a Samsung LN46A550 46-inch 1080p LCD HDTV TV. I played a few older DVDs on it and it didnt look that great with upscaling, but those DVDs are OLD. Will post follow up reviews when I can locate DVDs that are more recent. I am not ready to spend that much on Blue Rays set and those 30.00 a piece shows. On: 2008-05-19
It plays everything: regular DVDs, downloaded movies from USB memory stick, and now, that I set it region-free, even the European DVDs. We can watch everything on a big screen, from a comfortable couch. I am very happy to have such a convenient little gadget for such a reasonable price!
For the info, the region free hack I found on the internet. It is simple: open the tray, press SETUP, choose PREFERENCE, press 1 3 8 9 3 1, select region 0. Thats all.
On: 2008-05-18
This thin and siver DVD player is not just for DVD but also MP3/Divx. I was searching for Divx player and checked reviews of such ones. This model was chosen by me: 1. Thin and light 2. Simple to use 3. Clean video quality 4. Most of all, it has a USB port on the front panel. If I have a Divx file to watch, I just copy it on a USB memory stick and insert in on the port. If you watch movies made avi file on a computer, this is what you need. When you watch it on TV via this product, its video quality is much better like a dvd quality. But, it is not perfect. 90-95% of files with extended name of "avi" recognized. When a file is not playalbe, "Codec" error message shows up. Also, files with extended name of asf,wm, wvx and so on are not recognized by this product. On: 2008-05-16
My experience with Phillips has been horrible. I bough this player as a gift for my brother so it took me a while to give it to him and the 30 days return expired. The DVD player would not recognize discs so I called Phillips. They offered me a great solution, ship the defective unit to them (at my cost) and pay them $50.00 to send me a refurbished unit! Are you serious?
I dont know about you but that sounds like a horrible deal.
I called customer care etc to no help so I am boycotting Phillips. From now on I will NOT buy anything with their name on it. Funny thing is that my wife bought me a Norelco shaver which is made by them and it is actually pretty good. But still I am not buying anything from them anymore. Good luck though! On: 2008-05-15
Easy setup and easy to use. I connected it to a 19" HDTV using the component cables that came with the TV. Using the upscale setting and a standard DVD with TV at 720p, the picture is bright and beautifully detailed. Much better picture than I had expected. I definitely recommend this player. It is thinner but a bit wider than my last player, so be sure it will fit your allotted space. On: 2008-05-15
It works flawlessly since Ive had it, but the only problem that I have is that the DVD tray is not sturdy like other DVD players that I have had. If you push it in slightly hard it will break it easily. Beside that problem, this is a great 1080p upconvert with affordable price. On: 2008-05-13
This unit is great because it does what its supposed to do.
Movie quality is great (1080 upconvert). Setup is very easy (I hate how complex some basic gadgets are becoming - getting old?!). The unit is sleak and actually looks very good. It plays all regions (the reason I bought it - instructions to set this up available online). It has an added incredible bonus USB feature which means I can play *.avi (full movie) files from my flash drive at excellent quality. All standard cable outputs supported including HDMI.
For $60, I dont think anything else needs to be said. On: 2008-05-12
I bought this because I wanted to play multi region DVDs (from the UK). I found a short sequence of codes online that took about two minutes to input and then the player was unlocked for all DVD regions. Much cheaper than buying from an online retailer who does it for you. Good picture, good sound. Small machine. Only the remote and menus let it down slightly. On: 2008-05-12
A different DVD player I tried did not communicate the aspect ratios to my flat screen TV over HDMI. I would have to adjust my TV or player settings for each dvd, depending on whether it is widescreen or letterbox.
I returned that one and bought this. Ive been using it for almost a year, and the player correctly displays DVDs with all aspect ratios on my TV over HDMI connection, without need for manual adjustment for each DVD.
I have no major complaints about this player, and it is a great buy. On: 2008-05-10
I purchased this unit b/c I wanted something that would play NTSC and PAL DVDs, as well as .avi files. The USB port is a cool feature as well. The user interface, however, leaves a lot to be desired. Whether directly pressing buttons on the unit (e.g. to open the disc tray) or via the remote, the unit is slow to react and several button presses are sometimes necessary. This also mays it frustrating to do simple pauses, rewinds, return to menu, etc. I would not purchase this unit again. I would look for one which similarly handled a large range of video formats, but with a MUCH sleeker user interface. Its like they created a great unit, then dropped the ball on the packaging. On: 2008-05-06
Great DVD Player.
I use it with my 500GB hard drive - works great! On: 2008-05-04
I bought two of this DVD player. I really enjoyed the USB input. You can plug in your external HD and USB drive to play downloaded movies and videos. FYI, it only supports FAT32 format. It also has region free support. On: 2008-05-04
My take on this, just briefly:
1. The player has nice upconverting quality for DVDs; but its only average for DivX movies.
2. USB port is very picky about the devices that it can handle; definitely the worse that Ive seen on any upconverting player.
3. Cheap/unreliable construction quality. Just within the 1st week of its use, the first player gradually started to skip parts of the movie (even on brand new DVD movies) and eventually stopped reading any DVDs altogether. I returned it for a replacement. The second one couldnt read half of my DVD collection out of the box (particularly our home videos burned on DVDs)
4. Remote looks decent, but its really a pain in the neck. Need to press on each key relatively hard to make it work (OK in the beginning; frustrating after a while); truly lacks the "Scan/
Search" keys (their double-function solution is lame).
5. Auto shut-off feature is terrible, because if you pause the movie to get a phone call for 10 minutes, it turn the unit off, and if you were watching an DivX movie, the unit would not remember where on the movie it went off. This feature cannot be disabled!
6. One really nice thing about this player is that it can read multiregion DVDs by just typing a few numbers into the remote control.
Final thoughts: I finally settled on Pioneer DV-400 and am much happier now. At least it works and seems to be a solid product.
Frankly, anything that Ive tried from Philips by far were nice in terms of look and features, but had some major design flaws and unreliable/flimsy construction. On: 2008-05-03
Really like the slim case , the only thing I found so far that I would improve is the remote control. I find that it is a little slow in its response. On: 2008-05-03
Great product. Really does play everything I have stashed for years. Old CD recorded movies in who-knows formats as well as all the new ones. Looks great! Slick :) On: 2008-05-03
I paid $60.00 for this player and it does a great job of upscaling my DVDs.....what a great bargain....the increased resolution and contrast and color richness is amazing...of course the higher quality the DVD transfer the better the upscaling, but if you mainly watch new releases youre pretty much guaranteed a great upscaled picture....upscaling DVD players are great and this one is terrific....esp. when you consider the "pocket change" price! On: 2008-05-02
i bought this upconvert dvd player b/c i wanted to be able to watch all of my old dvds on an hdtv - this thing is awesome. the picture quality (either hooked up via component rgb cables or hdmi) is crisp and clear, and you can watch all of you movies at full 1080 resolution.
the other thing i love about this player: it plays all of the divx 3.11a (the hacked version before it became official), divx 4 and divx 5 movies i have that i burned onto cdrom. for dvds you record yourself, the built-in menu screen lets you select which movie you want to watch and determines the format automatically.
one other cool feature: lets say your watching a movie and you pause it to come back later or to watch another movie...well, it remembers where you left off, even if youve put in and watched a completely different movie...not bad.
the remote could look a little nicer i suppose, but that aside, all of the functionality is there. and the menus, albeit a little non-flashy, give you all the settings you need to configure it for different tv setups. it also has the nice feature of being able to set the output screen format (16:9, 4:3, etc.), so you dont have to see the bars on an hdtv. the player itself is also nice and compact, so it wont take up much room in your tv cabinet.
bottom line: excellent price, plays every dvd/divx movie disc in every variety of formats ive ever tried with it, can set a lot of picture format options, looks great on an hdtv. On: 2008-05-02
I was impressed with the good quality this very affordable
player offers. The upconversion to High Def is good, its design and additional input for flash drives is a plus.
The HDMI output delivers a crisp, clear signal and the remote is nicely designed. No draw backs with this great performing system. On: 2008-04-29
Picture quality is OK but it takes forever to open and close. Remote is flimsy and tiny On: 2008-04-28
Awesome DVD player. Great picture quality, but just as importantly, it plays everything Ive thrown at it. Even when my XBox, which I use to stream multimedia from my PC, fails me, I move the content to a USB drive or DVD+R and this DVD player handles it like a dream. The $60 average price is ridiculously low for the reliability and functionality you get. Definite must buy! On: 2008-04-26
This product does improve the image of a standard DVD when displayed on an HDTV. It certainly doesnt compare with true HD, but its definitely better than a standard player.
The remote is a little disappointing. Small, and a few buttons with dual purpose, which is kind of annoying. Also lacks an open/closebutton, which means you have to use the one on the unit and wait for the tray to open.
Operation is also a little slow, Im referring to load time, as well as other operations. Theres just a little lag when doing just about anything. Another unfortunate omission is a button that takes you directly to the root menu. The one that says menu takes you to the episode menu, not the episode list.
It definitely plays DivX files better than my old Toshiba did. The Toshiba showed up all kinds of flaws on an HDTV, and those are significantly reduced with this player.
I decided to append this review. The longer I have this player the more I like it. In fact, Im SO glad I made this decision, while waiting for a blu-ray player with the features I want, to come out. The flaws in design I mentioned, they still hold true, but the image it produces really is damn good. Its almost as good as an HD broadcast on digital cable. Very close. DivX performance is almost as good. For the price, I dont think you can beat it.

I guess I should have just ponied up the cash for a Blu-Ray player because thing is weak. The picture is fuzzy as if you were at a drive-in movie theater and the projector is out of focus just a little bit. You can tolerate but youd expect more. I have a nice Samsung 1080p TV which has a great high def picture but this DVD player doesnt upscale anything. Lettering and captions look like they have shadows too. I suppose until we know what high def disc format is going to dominate the market this is the best we can do. Maybe my expecations were too high. But be warned. You get what you pay for. The lesson here: If you order a filet mignon, dont drink a Bud with it. On: 2008-04-25
Very good value for the money. I wish it did better with the Fast Forward and Rewind functions. Good thing I had bought the HDMI cable prior to ordering. On: 2008-04-24
I bought already two units, this DVD player has good video quality, HDMI output, 1080P and zone free.
couldnt find cheaper 1080P HDMI.
On: 2008-04-23
I bought this model to replace my Philips DVP5140 only because I wanted to play avi files directly through the USB port and to use the lip synch feature for files where synching was imperfect. I did not want to use the upscaling or HDMI features, and I connect through component cables. To my great disappointment the machine clearly has a much inferior video processor to the cheaper, older, 5140. Motion on all but the slowest bit rate avi files burned to DVD is unwatchably jerky, while the same files play perfectly on the older machine through the same connections. So this model may be fine for HDMI and upscaling purposes, but you should avoid like the plague for any other type of connection. On: 2008-04-21
You will not find anything remotely comparable in this price range! Great product! Images are sharp, even when not upscaling, and combined with a home theatre, provides a cinema-like experience to the viewer. And its capacity to play almost any video file is something not to be overlooked. Slow tray operation is a minor issue, not enough to take one star away. Use the directional buttons on the remote for ff or rew. On: 2008-04-21
Ok, so I havent been able to test the upscaling out yet b/c I do not own a hd tv but the main purpose for me getting this one was for the region free and PAL/NTSC conversion. This function is great(just follow instructions on how to unlock it - found on amazon) and in fact it seems to play any kind of formatted disc that I put into it. The usb works great. My only problems were the ones I expected anyways like the crappy remote, bad menu interface, and flimsy tray. What I didnt expect was how SLLOOOOWWW it is. I got this for 60 bucks with free shipping and was still well worth it despite its few setbacks. I would still reccommend this to anyone who wants to be prepared for HD but is still too cheap to buy BLUERAY players. Cheers. 4 out of 5 stars. On: 2008-04-21
Simply put,
this is a great product for the money. It works greta for me, if its workign at all.
The upscaling portion of it is strange. When i put in, Like Jurassic Park, and the menu comes up. I go to the setup and go to 1080p and set it for that HD viewing, but the screen itself i cant see much difference, so if its working it looks great. I find with HD that messing with your TV is more important than the upscaling because the color and brightness and contrast are the magic of HD..Make sure your TV looks good first.
1 slip up... For soem reason The HDMI portion of the DVD player only with show HD conenction in my HDMI 1 input. My other 2 HDMI inputs dont work with the DVD Player.. So my digital cable i plug to HDMI 2 and i Have the DVD player in HDMI 1.. Its not the TV cause ive tried the player on 3 different HD models.
good stuff On: 2008-04-20
You cant beat the price/features on this player. Unless you are running 1080p, the upconverted image definition on regular 720s with HDMI connection is without match. The USB connector is a plus. A little slow to load and start up, but well worth it. On: 2008-04-16
I bought this unit from Best Buy in the first week of November and by the first week of December I had great picture, but no sound. I brought it back and the store exchanged it for a new unit, since the problem occured within 30 days. The second unit did fine until mid April, and again the same problem occured. Being past 30 days, the solution has become a lot more complicated. And there is truth to the saying: "you get what you pay for!"
Im shopping for another unit.... On: 2008-04-13
for the price i paid here, this is a very good DVD player. i dont tend to use any features other than . . . play/pause, but it does that quite well. i have an HDMI cable that came with it and attached that to the new HDTV and regular DVDs look fantastic on my television. On: 2008-04-12
I purchased the DVP5982 to view .avi files. So far, of the several hundred .avi-formatted files accessed, the Player has had only one occurrence where an .ave file could not be played (due to an unrecognized codex). The HDMI cable interface works well (cable not supplied), and once the unit is initialized, the output is crystal clear with no video noise noted for any of its formats. I have not tried the Upscaling feature yet. On: 2008-04-12
This is a budget DVD player that goes above and beyond the call of duty. The picture quality is good. The USB port is very useful for viewing pictures and home movies. On: 2008-04-12
Wow, this is Soooooo close to the perfect machine for dvd/divx/etc! One MASSIVE flaw is that you cant read the filenames when looking at divx titles. Well - 14 chars, but most of the ones I have are of tv shows and the episode listing is past 14 chars. Note to buyers - the Philips firmware upgrades dont address this issue. And, though its been out a year, there are no modded firmwares for this version. 5960 has many, and its nearly the same machine - if you want modded firmware, buy that one. I havent had the machine but one month, so I cant comment on longevity (hopefully not as bad as the ultimate brick, the Philips 950 recorder).
Ill hold this machine a bit in hopes of a firmware upgrade. Its almost excellent, but for a few major issues that could easily be fixed. On: 2008-04-11
great dvd player for $60ish dollars. the upscaling works great and Im very pleased with it. the only reason I took away 2 stars is because there are no rwd/ffwd buttons on the remote. not much of a problem cuz the remote is garbage anyways and got put aside immediately. the problem is that because of this my new harmony 880 remote wont register rwd/ffwd buttons. I know that someday, given the time, I can fix the problem, just wish I didnt have to. I gladly would have spent the extra $10 - $20 to avoid the frustration. On: 2008-04-08
This is my second Philips, the first being the popular DVP642. By comparison, this one has several annoying flaws: 1) Other reviewers arent kidding that it takes FOREVER for the tray to open. What is not often mentioned is that removing disks from the tray is a task: they sit flush inside, you cannot grasp any outside surface of the disk. One must either tap it from below or slip a finger inside the hole. 2) The upscaling feature is limited to the DVI output, and I believe it requires HDCP. I had both, but still annoying. 3) The player by default has DVI audio output turned OFF! Not a dealbreaker, but it often "forgets" and needs to be reset to output audio. 4) Compared to the DVP642, the remote feels very cheap. On: 2008-04-05
I get it for the DivX capabilities. The remote is a bit of a PITA, and the menus are kinda shabby, but for the price, not bad. On: 2008-04-04
I was led to believe that the upscaling feature would produce a better picture but the extreme pixelation when a scene changed from light to dark made watching movies almost unbearable.
I just purchased a new Sony progressive scan dvd player and the Phillips will go into the closet to collect dust. On: 2008-04-04
This is the best DVD player. I will recommend this for everybody. It has this USB port you can just attach your external hard drive and play any sort of movie. It supports avi, mp3, wmv, mpeg format I tried so far. Works Great! This dvd player has same abilities media abilities Xbox 360 or PS3 has but look at the price ... Great Buy! On: 2008-04-03
This player produces a lovely image with my new Sony LCD tv, using an hdmi cable bought separately. I find the remote VERY pleasant to use (in my average womans hands). I have to press the "open" button on the drawer twice and it is slow to load the disc, so you must be patient, hence 4 stars instead of 5. On: 2008-03-29
I could not find anything that told what this DVD Player would do in a clear manner so now Ill try. I time shift almost all of my TV watching using my computer & DVD-RW disks. My old Phillips DVD player was starting to wear out so I started to look for something else. USB seemed to be an option & I almost ordered a "Sansa-Take" when I found this DVD player. This one plays raw Mpeg 1, Mpeg 2, DivX and Mp3 files on both disk and USB as well as the standard DVD cd player functions. It will not play my "ScanDisk Cruser" 2 GB thumb drive(There is a lot of imbedded software in the drive), however it plays my other simple USB thumb drives perfectly. As far as upscaling is concerned I am not using that at this time. In short the Phillips DVP5982 does everything that I need it to do & it costs about half what a "Sansa-Take" does. Amazon shipping was swift & free, Rock On!!! On: 2008-03-28
This is an excellent product.Would highly recommend it.Philips DVP5982 1080p Upscaling DVD PlayerVery Good. On: 2008-03-28
An amazing DVD player. You get what you request. My simple feedback
1. Really slow when you turn it on -it takes tiiiime.
2. Interface (GUI) is not the cutest but is good
3. USB works great but it is FAT32 -up to 4GB files supported - bigger will not supported. Only 8 chars filenames are supported -THIS IS HORRIBLE (example MYFILE~1.AVI)
Great product, great support from Philips -note: I requested some support due to connection issues not related to the DVD player, but, at that time I wasnt sure. On: 2008-03-27
I finally bought the player after reading other reviews.
One important reason for me to buy this player was that it is easy to make it country code free. I travel for business all over the world and I have several DVDs with different country codes. Instead of buying several players, I made this player country code free.
Beside this benefit, the player is easy to setup, has an excellent picture quality with up-conversion to 1080p, is easily connected via HDMI to my SONY TV.
Some things I miss is the optical interface, no fast forward or fast-rewind, takes some time to boot-up and a quite simple remote control. Some of the features of the player like USB interface or divx I never used but could be a reason to buy.
But it is definitely a good value for the buck.
I actually have two of them, one in the basement connected with a HD beamer and one in the living room connected to my SONY 1080p LCD TV. It could not be a bad product when I bought two of them. On: 2008-03-26
There are already several reviews of this little DVD player so I wont repeat what others have said. Instead, allow me to talk about the features I liked in this player.
First off, allow me to say that this player played pretty much everything I placed in its drive. DVDs, backups on DVD-R and DVD+R discs, VCD and SVCD discs, AVI/DIVX/XVID files, etc. If its a video file, this thing will probably play it.
One reason I bought this DVD player was for the USB port on the front, where you can plug in either a USB memory stick or a USB portable hard drive and watch movies off of those. For example, if you download a DIVX video from the Internet and want to watch it in your living room, instead of having to burn the video on to a CD/DVD you can instead put it on a memory stick and watch it that way instead. This is a great way to watch videos that you dont want to necessarily keep forever. One thing to note is that when watching DIVX videos off of my USB thumb drive, they take approximately 30 seconds to start playing. Once they start, they look fine and you can pause/fast forward/rewind them with no problem.
One thing that was unclear to me when I purchased this unit was how to split the audio out of the HDMI stream -- in other words, I wanted to run the video through HDMI to my television, and the audio out the digital output to my stereo. (My tuner is older and does not have HDMI inputs.) I read a lot of confusing statements about this but in the end it was very simple to do (there is a menu option). I was slightly disappointed to find that there was no optical digital out (fiber) on the back of the unit; instead, I used the digital RCA connection (which my stereo also supports) and Im getting Dolby 5.1 out of the player just fine.
The front of the unit contains enough buttons for operation without needing the remote. The remote is 1/2 size of a normal remote. It looks a little cheezy sitting next to all my other remotes (remote envy?) but the smaller size makes it easy to identify. The units setup menu is a little quirky, but once you figure out how to maneuver through it, it works okay.
The other reason I bought this unit was because it upscales to 1080p. You can either let it do its thing manually, or you can set the players resolution manually. Each time I try that my television freaks out and flashes green which I think is TV speak for, "stop doing that!" so I have. In the end I just let the player upscale to the best of its ability and it does a good job. My old DVD player (a Wal-Mart $30 job) had composite outputs but did not upscale, and on my 46" LCD television I can tell a difference between the two.
Between the USB port and the upscaling, this Phillips DVD player has a lot of neat features at a very reasonable price. On: 2008-03-25
I have played soo many DVDs already since my purchase last month. This is a very smart DVD player. If I take a movie out while its playing 1 week later it plays in it same spot. And also, I didnt relize how I could put my USB Drive to view pics. ;-) On: 2008-03-25
The Philips DVP 5982 is really a stand DVD player without peer. For the $59 that Amazon is charging, nothing is close to having its features and quality.
The playing of compressed Divx Video (it has the highest level of Divx licensing), look spectacular, especially when connected to a TV that allows for 1080p and wide screen. Unreal. I can fit about 4 full length videos on a single DVD. MAKE SURE that you dont compile a Divx video with a width greater than 720 !! With the upconverting it doesnt matter anyway.
I have used the USB input lots of times. For playing Divx compressed video as well as music. Looks great and sounds great.
One simple connection with a single HDMI cable to your TV or PCs high level graphics card and that is all that is needed for HD video and audio.
The most important thing is how great the output of DVDs, Divx, MPEG video looks and how good the .jpg photos look and the audio sounds.
That is the bottom line.
Some lose the fact of what they get a DVD player for and what is important is the flexibility of the formats (especially having Divx and allowing for USB in), the HDMI out, the up converting, and how flipping good DVDs and other videos look and sound !!
For $59 I am not looking for perfection. Yes, I would like the remote to be laid out better, a few more buttons to run it manually if I want, BUT, it is $59 !!!!!!!!
Those that have issues with it playing I guarantee are because they do not understand multi-media and give knee-jerk reactions rather than research it. Plus it always takes some time to get used to the remote and some idiosyncrasies of it.
At this price-point, nothing is close.
Please dont be a CONSUMER SUCKER and waste money on Blue-Ray and big name products. Lets expand what compressed video can do, which saves all of us SOOOO much money.

Output of this unit on an HDTV seems very good, so no complaints there. I like the way it picks up where you left off if you pause long enough for it to shut itself off.
Reasons for not giving it a "5" are probably minor:
- remote is small and easy to hold, but also hard to read
- DVD tray seems to take a long time to pop out (not a really long time, but compared to my other DVD players, it seems long)
- I also sometimes use my DVD players to play MP3 files on CDs, and this unit doesnt have a "shuffle option" for CDs (although it does for DVDs). On: 2008-03-24
This product is great. Plays all formats and much better on DivX stuff. It also does a great job on up converting to 1080. My TV is maximum 1080i not 1080p,so player auto detected it and automatically switched to the proper mode. It worth to by it, rather then arguing with Phillips regarding an update for your old model. It also smaller and looks better. And there is no more annoying RED POWER LED - it is green now.! On: 2008-03-11
The USB port is a very nice feature and you can just put some mp3 or video files and play it easily.
The remote controller is weird and the buttons seems to be in the wrong position. But I have it controlled by my receiver remote, so its not a big matter.
The upscaling really brings a better image quality, but still far away from a standard HD channel or Blue-ray image. On: 2008-03-10
Bought this from Amazon for the upconversion and the front panel USB port media player. 70 days after purchase, it has started to fail, but Ill try to be fair:
The Good:
-Excellent video quality in 1080p upconversion (to my LG LCD) and component, to my AV reciever
-Neat feature: USB port in front will play many (not all) media file formats from my cheapie USB drives
-Reasonably well packaged when shipped from Amazon
-Codes available on virtually all universal remotes in my house worked great on the first or second try
-Optical audio sounds great
The Bad:
-Completely non-intuitive menu set. Ive seen better menus on $15 generic digital cameras. Possibly the worst I have ever seen. I WAS able to get advanced features configured, but it took an hour and was not described at all in the manual.
-Coaxial digital audio and Optical digital audio do not coexist well
-Poorly vented enclosure...too thin, feet too low to allow airflow underneath...see below.
-Failed after 70 days of ownership (front panel is blank, overheats mid-playback despite being all by itself on an open shelf)
-ABYSMAL warranty support from Philips. READ CAREFULLY: THE WARRANTY IS ONLY 90 DAYS, and even then, they expect YOU to pay for insured, priority return shipping BEFORE receiving the replacement unit. If you return it non-insured or non-priority, they will refuse to replace it. I may wait until the 90 day warranty is expired, just to take advantage of my credit cards warranty extension service.
I guess I shouldve expected this from a $59 DVD player, but I guess I was spoiled by my last $59 DVD player: an Apex that played any horrible disc I threw at it and lived for 5 years. On: 2008-03-09
This is a great DVD. I love the USB capability. I have used it several times to play avi files I downloaded and it worked great. I have not used the up converting feature yet. Great price. On: 2008-03-08
The best DIVX Player for upconverting into HDTV (720p, 1080i, and 1080p). The Picture Quality is just about perfect. USB port works with flash drive with pictures and movies. However, I have not tested external hard disk. Would like to see improvements in Picture Quality for older DVDs. Overall, excellent buy. On: 2008-03-08
Overall I am satisfied with this DVD player. Picture quality is great and the setup menu is easy to navigate. My only complaint is that when I play burned DVD-Rs it freezes frequently. I thought there was a problem with the unit but when I played regular DVDS it didnt freeze. On: 2008-03-07
The only downfall to this DVD player for me is the sluggish response times. But, the DVDs play and look great on it.
What I really LOVE about it is the USB port. I bought a 16 GB corsair flash drive and now, i can dump my divx files to that and watch movies via the flash drive which means I dont have to burn disks or anything. I also hooked an external hard drive to it with no problems.
This unit is worth what little it cost for what it does.

HDMI output and great upconversion/upscaling will delay my BluRay DVD player purchase for several years. very crisp viewing of current cheap DVDs on my 37 inch TV. On: 2008-03-06
Very good product for the money. USB works great. But it needs to support NTFS format to be able to display tittle more than 8 characters. On: 2008-03-05
I bought a factory re-certified product from philips.com. I really love the sleek look of the product. It is way smaller than I expected.
It plays my vcd, dvd-r for no problem.
I even tested several video clips using kinsgton Data traveler flash drive for no problems.

Second thought:
When you play a video say JPG format, the video lags very frequently. Then I used a divx converter software to convert it to divx format. The problem is then got solved. I believe my finds will be very helpful for many owners.
On: 2008-03-04
This DVD player is fine, but I do not see much difference between my "regular" DVD player and this "upscaling" DVD player. I dont personally think the "upscaling" is worth the additional cost. On: 2008-02-29
Hi, I dont usally take the time to write about stuff I buy, buttt, I had to. This unit is great for all of you down loaders that get your movies on divx (know what I mean!). This unit is great I hooked up a 750 gig hard drive to the usb port and I have about 90 movies on it. It has the capacity to store approx 600-1000 movies, (if your movies are divx and aprox 750mgs to 1.2gigs depending on the encoder). Anyway, with this set up I have a jukebox of movies that I can wathch at anytime and never have to load or unload a dvd. The movies are very fluid and dont jerk or pause. The only time you will get that jerk and pause action is if the drive needs to be defragmented. Oh yea you have to format the drive fat 32. The unit plays every format that I have thrown at it except one xvid formant (dont ask me why) but I recomend it whole heartedly, for any video enthusiast. Anyway, thanks for listing! On: 2008-02-28
I bought this to replace a conventional Samsung DVD player. It is slow in responding. When I power ON and try to insert a disk, I have to wait about 30 seconds before the drawer slides open. Sometimes I have to turn the unit OFF and re-start it. I use the RGB output, so video looks good. On: 2008-02-27
As many have, I bought this DVD player to hold me over until I want to invest in a high definition DVD system. Being that I have a 1080p TV it was important to me to have an upscaling 1080p player. Unfortunately, I am not impressed by the upscaling with little to no difference between the different modes: 480, 720, 1080. I have only watched three movies so far, I will update if necessary. On: 2008-02-26
Heard about this DVD player from a buddy who bought one for his 64" TV and loved it. My brothers player crapped out after 7 years and so I got one for his 46" Sony LCD Proj, and went ahead and nabbed one for myself and my 42" Sony LCD Proj.
Setup was simple using HDMI, and menus are simple and intuitive. I only needed a quick scan of the manual to get my bearings and to make sure I understood everything. At first I set it on Auto, but Im not 100% sure that it works as youd like it to. First couple of things I watched (2003 WSOP DVD & Blades of Glory) were definitely better than my old standard DVD player, but didnt blow me away. I figured the player was doing the best it could with them since I set it on Auto. Then I stuck in Transformers one afternoon and a little ways in decided to see what it was running at. Well Im pretty sure it was 480p, because I had to hit the button on the face of the player 3 or 4 times to force it to 1080i (the highest my TV supports) and WOW what a world of difference. Its certainly not legitimate HD quality, but for a $60 upconvert DVD player, its pretty mind blowing. Id say its probably about 85-90% as good as pure HD quality. I am just a guy who loves HD and by no means a videophile, so this player is plenty satisfying to me until I decide to take the plunge into HD DVD. Dont hesitate to purchase. On: 2008-02-26
The Philips DVP5982 1080p Upscaling DVD Player has been a satisfying purchase for my HD TV. I have a Philips 32" 720p tv and have been able to recognize a clear difference in the picture of most of my DVDs.
Important Notes: The quality of the picture does not improve if you are not using a HDMI cable - that is standard regardless of the player you purchase. Some movies may not appear noticeably clearer if the movie is an older movie and not digitally remastered. Upscale is like makeup: there is only so much you can do for an ugly date. If you have a Philips tv, the remote for your tv may or may not control the DVP5982 - mine doesnt. Even if your tv will receive a 1080p signal but can only display a lower resolution, the player will only upscale to the level your tv will display. If you connect with a HDMI cable, some DVD audio may not work. Simple fix (I learned this after I returned the first one and had the same problem on the second):
1) Press "Setup" on your remote
2) Press your Right Arrow button one time until the Audio Setup Page appears
3) Press your Down Arrow until you highlight "Digital Audio Setup"
4) Press your Down Arrow until you get to the "HDMI Audio Setup"
5) Select "On"
6) Press your Back Arrow until you can navigate the icons at the top of the page and "Exit" Setup, OR just press the "Setup" button (the easy way)
Other Points of Interest: The remote is small and must be pointed directly at the player in order for it function. The player tray does feel cheap, but then again this isnt a $1,000 player either. It plays movies burned with iMovie and iDVD flawlessly for me.
Bottom Line: It was the lowest price mainstream 1080p Upscaling DVD Player I found, and it has performed better than I expected for a player that costs less than $100. While its quality will not equal that of a Blu-Ray, it just might keep you happy until the Blu-Ray player prices go down and the bugs get worked out. Just in case you were wondering, Im planning on purchasing a larger 1080p LCD and I will most probably purchase a second DVP5982 while I wait out the Blu-Ray/HD birthing. On: 2008-02-26
I purchased the refurbished model so I could play region 2 DVDs. I couldnt be more pleased with this player. Once I was able to change the region code to "O" (thanks to a previous customers review), I was off and running. The player is slim, light weight and easy to operate. The picture quality is great. This player has exceeded all my expectations. I highly recommend it. On: 2008-02-25
Does only one thing but does it well and looks good doing it. Excellent picture but lacks bells and whistles. Worth the money. On: 2008-02-25
I wouldnt mind this in a 3-5 dvd holder but it plays everything it said it would. A little slow to load but not that bad. It is worth the money. On: 2008-02-25
A bit slow on turning on, opening tray. Not the best remote control but otherwise great image. On: 2008-02-24
I have only had the DVD about a month, but it seems to play just fine. The price was good and it wasnt too difficult to set up. The directions are a hoot if not too informative, but the setup is fairly intuitive. If you use an HDMI cable connection(not included), you have to remember to enable the audio for HDMI specifically or you dont get any sound. I do like the fact that the remote control is very basic - my last DVD had a remote with more keys than I ever managed to figure out before the DVD quit working. The picture quality is very good and you can open the disc drawer with the remote - a very nice feature. All in all, I think I received good value for the price. It just remains to be seen how long the player actually lasts. On: 2008-02-23
Its easy to set up but the performance is not up to par with the specification. I cant tell whether the picture quality has any improvement with the up convertsion mode when playing regular DVD or Divx files on my 1080p HDTV. On: 2008-02-21
I received this DVD player with no noticeable damage to the box. I opened it, put in a DVD and immediately noticed a scratching sound. The DVD player will not play any of my DVDs unless I take off the top cover. The DVD will rub against the top not allowing it to gain enough speed to read the DVD. Im very disappointed considering the DVD player looks to be undamaged what so ever...definitely a manufacturing flaw. On: 2008-02-19
I have a lot of experience with Philips DVD players as for a long time they were the only ones doing the Divx playback, which is a very important feature. Divx playback on this machine is clunky, and seems to be a few frames slower than it should be. It takes 5-10 seconds for the unit to power on, but then all the new players seem to be doing that.
I was going to take it back soon after I bought it due to the playback issues and menu system with the Divx movies. When you power on the unit and put a DVD full of Divx clips it opens a basic menu, however after you play one of these movies, you CANNOT return to the menu. This means you cant play another movie unless you know where it is on the disc and skip to it. Basically, this player has the functionality of an ipod shuffle. Add that to the fact that it seems like you are watching divx at 3/4 speed.
As if these reasons werent enough, yesterday the sound stopped working on Divx files. I placed a DVD, and the sound. A few minutes later tried the same DVD and it stopped playing sound. Checked connections, and no problem there, so it turns out that this player is a piece of crap in terms of reliability, although I already knew that and purchased because of cheap price.
Im getting the Pioneer for $[...] also on amazon, it has great reviews. Dont buy this unit unless you like to be annoyed by slow command responses, terrible divx playback, and some type of malfunction in under 6 months. I will be staying away for the entry level Philips devices. On: 2008-02-18
This product definitely works as expected, reason I got this product mainly was to play songs/movies from my external drive and it does that well.
DVD player - upscales resolution. Loading of disc takes a while - but is bearable - so no complaints. Remote does not have eject button - I still have to fool around with it to find quirks and goodies.
Hope this helps !!! On: 2008-02-18
Overall, Im happy with this DVD player.
I took one star away because it takes too long to open the drive. Also, since it has a USB port, I though Id be able to connect my external HD with mpg and avi files and watch them though DVD player... but it did not work. :( On: 2008-02-18
I purchased this unit because I needed an economical stop-gap while I await all the new technology to shake out. It was also attractive in that I can use it later on an analog TV I have in another room.
The unit is being used to play disks that are owned and rented thru mail order on a flat-screen HDTV. The mail order disks are often in less-than-presentable condition. In the past with my old GO-BLUE, the defects in the disks would often cause interruptions in the play. This unit doesnt miss a beat; clarity and depth are outstanding, and Im not even using HDMI cable. The pause mode has become a favorite: if I get a long phone call and have to PAUSE, it goes from pause to screensaver to complete shutdown; upon restarting the unit and pressing the PLAY button, it picks up exactly where it left off. My only gripe (a minor one) is the remote. Many of the keypads are small, play and pause are the same keypad, and STOP and EJECT are the same keypad--and unless you read the manual, you wouldnt know where the eject was. All in all, I cant complain about this player. And now that I know of some of the quirks, I would be comfortable purchasing Philips equipment again. On: 2008-02-18
Less than half the cost of anything I found in the stores. Works just fine. I think I made a great purcharse, and the picture looks great on my new LCD TV. On: 2008-02-17
Ive found this to be a solid player, but have the same gripes as many of the other reviewers. The remote may require 2 or 3 clicks before it responds, even when standing directly in front of the player. My biggest complaints involve watching longer-length divx files.
NO. 1: The remote uses the same button for "Fast Foward" and "Next Chapter". At least 1/2 the time I try to use the FF, the player skips to the next divx file; VERY ANNOYING if you happen to be in the middle of a long movie and only wanted to skip ahead a short distance or rewind a short distance to replay some missed dialog.
NO 2: If you pause the divx movie, you only have a couple of minutes before the screensaver activates; after that, you only have a couple more minutes before the player goes into "standby", and you cant resume playback from the same position.
However, even with these 2 annoyances, I love having the ability to play divx files on my TV, rather than wasting the time/discs to convert/burn a file to DVD. On: 2008-02-16
This DVD player workes great with my HDTV. It really helps you take advantage of your TVs full potental for a small price. Even the older movies look great when converted to HD. On: 2008-02-15
This DVD player is able to do a nice upconverting to 1080P although I couldnt find it much different than 720P but it could be because of my TV being 720P. The niceset thing about this DVD player is the ability to play from USB port. It plays pretty much anything from USB port.
for the price that it is listed for its a pretty good deal.
So far looks like Blu-Ray is winning the format war, but Ill still wait for this years Black Friday to get any deals. On: 2008-02-15
I have had my Philips for 4 months now and got it on sale for under $40. I hooked it up to my HD LCD TV and was able to use it right away.
Pros
1. It does a nice job with my DVDs even the older ones -
the picture isnt HD DVD quality but its better than my old DVD player
2. Pretty simple to use
3. Has standard features - FF or Rew in different speeds, pause,
go directly to menu and go back and to next chapter
4. Remotes okay - kind of bulky
Cons
1. Cant open or close the drawer from the remote
2. Opening the drawer cant be done unless the machine is turned on
For the price, I wasnt expecting anything great and its not, but it is pretty good. Id recommend it for the kitchen or the TV in the study. On: 2008-02-13
I like what this DVD does, i recomend to buy it, i have a Viewsonic HDTV and its look nice with this DVD, using a $3 HDMI cable On: 2008-02-13
I have the problem with this dvd player is the other reviews wish for, both output over the HDMI cable and the digital coaxial at the same time. With both audio out put (sound come out from TV speaker and Audio Equiptment Speakers)in the same time will sound ECHO. I turn off the digital HDMI audio at the sound set up, but it turn back on after I turn off and on the dvd player. I have to turn off the HDMI at the set up everytime I want to watch the movie or just stick with sound come out from TV Speaker. If anyone have the same problem and know how to fix please post for others. The HDMI cable I have cost me 1 cent plus $5 shipping at Amazon Market place (the gold paint chip off when I received it, one cent, what can I say). It work but not recommonded if you can afford a better one.
The other problem is the remote have no Seach Buttons. Only have chapter backward or forward button, it mean I miss something I have go back one chapter not just a little. On: 2008-02-13
This is excellent for the price. You can view pretty much any video format you burn on a CD- avi, mov, mpg, jpg, etc. The usb 2.0 port is a huge bonus. I load tons of movies onto my 300gb external HD and play them thru the usb port on the dvd player.
On: 2008-02-13
I bought this dvd player primarily to playback divx files through the USB port. It has flawlessly played files on my 6GB drive plugged into the USB port. It provides me with real fast forward and reverse at multiple speeds rather than 5 second jumps. My only complaint is it does not understand long file names but I can live with 8.3 file names.
I was also pleased to find I can completely control this dvd player with my universal remote. I have played standard def DVDs without a problem but have not tried the upconverting or region-free features. On: 2008-02-13
This is an awesome DVD if your current one is out of date and you need a new one and you arent ready to choose sides in the Blue Ray/HDDVD war...
The best part about it is the ability to read Divx and many other file formats, without having to encode DVDs into standard DVD format...
Plus the ability to pop your USB flash drive in and play your movies directly...
That being said, it has its drawbacks, which arent enough to give it a bad rating..
The upconversion is not as good as I thought...but I think thats a limitation of all upconverting DVD players....
I just got a 40inch LCD and was disappointed with my old DVDs performance...I was hoping this would make it better, so I dont have to buy a bluray/hddvd but it did not improve video quality that much..even with a HDMI cable... I think you just cant expect miracles when you buy the latest and greatest TV ..hahaha On: 2008-02-13
This thing is great! The main reason for this purchase was for the USB port. It is not included in the description but you can play video files through it. It plays just like if it were a DVD. Very rarely do you see any skipping. I have not used the up converting on this player since I do not have an HDTV yet but that will be a nice feature sometime in the future.
The only con I can think of(which isnt even that bad) is that the dvd tray is very slow to respond when you open it.
Some people may complain that there is no eject button on the remote but if you hold down the stop button for a few seconds it will open the tray. On: 2008-02-12
Although the tray/door to insert the DVD takes a while (about 10 seconds) to open, I still love this DVD player. It plays DVDs very clearly, and can accept a USB flash drive or USB hard drive with .avi/divx/xvid files on them. It allows me to play videos from my video camera right off a USB drive instead of burning DVDs. I definately reccomend this player as it allows you to watch .avi movies or downloaded movies on the livingroom big screen instead of on a small computer screen. On: 2008-02-09
After hearing a co-worker talk about it, I had to get it for myself. Runs great, no problems as of yet. couple of people reviewed its tray being flimsy. . .It is very thin, but I wouldnt say flimsy. The fact that it can be region-freed was a big bonus for me. I would recommend this player. On: 2008-02-09
Wow, I didnt expect this DVD player to upconvert to 1080i this well! I have a 3 year old Sharp Aquos and the DVDs picture quality is as good as some of the stuff I see on HDTV! Needless to say, I cant be any happier with what Im getting on this machine. I dont think Im gonna be thinking of upgrading to Bluray anytime soon since Im perfectly happy with what this is doing. Perhaps, my TV is partly why Im getting this quality (my DVD seems better than some NEW TVs Ive seen lately). Also, I have this player connected through HDMI so Im obviously getting the optimum connection. For $[...], this is performing MUCH better than I expected! On: 2008-02-09
At the price that this Phillips is selling it is absolutely impossible to get anything better, heck even if you pay twice as much. 1080p upconversion works like a charm, and so does divx and xvid playback. i have an older model of this from several years ago and that one still works great as well ! On: 2008-02-08
I needed an additional DVD player (essentially to play Elmo and Thomas the Tank Engine for my son). Plugged this unit into a Philips 42" HD Plasma TV through an HDMI connection-- was up and running in less than 3 minutes. Picture is nice, although I have not really analyzed that much as this set up sits at second home-- and the abundance of Elmo on the screen. On: 2008-02-08
Most times a pretty good product gets buried because of poorly written instructions, not so with this one. Said instructions in this case make it fairly easy for even the most unsophisticated user to not only hook it up properly, but to adjust the settings for the type of monitor they are going to use.
Overlooked in all this was the fact that it makes almost all of my older DVD Movies approach HD or Blue Ray standards. Best money I ever spent!!

When I bought this I presumed there was an optical sound output, however it only has the RCA sound output. Why have the picture if you can have the sound? Also, if you have a Philips TV, your existing TV remote wont work with it. Other than this it does have a nice picture and sleek look. On: 2008-02-08
We purchased a Sharp Aquos HDTV and needed a reasonably priced DVD player.
Couldnt afford a HD DVD player at this time and after reviewing Several upscaling dvd players, settled on the Philips DVP5982.
It works very good. Movies are crisp and clear and looks to be HD.
We are very satisfied with the player. On: 2008-02-07
Excellent player. Handles videos encoded in Xvid perfectly. Sound matches after fast forwarding/rewinding on AVI files (on the DVP-642 it didnt). Also in setup you can adjust the sound to move slightly ahead or back to match your system perfectly. DVDimages on a flash drive also play fine. On: 2008-02-05
I purchased this dvd player to replace a really nice GE. Yes, this will play a photo cd and it is very slim and light. But the bad parts are this - it is kind of slow to start up. If you stop or pause the dvd for over 3 minutes the whole thing shuts down. If it doesnt like the TV you connect it to you will have a 1-3" distortion all along the top of your screen. Id return it if I could and just get a cheapie that would last until I upgrade to HD cable and new tellie. On: 2008-02-05
This DVD player is great because the pictures are crystal clear( HDMI), it played almost all dvd formats, and I like the most is it has USB port. I just downloaded my pictures or movies into a flash drive and plugged in. VOILA!!! The price is affordable. You cant go wrong with this. On: 2008-02-05
I have a 46" 1080p Samsung TV & my dvds look great with this player. Even my compressed burned dvds look impressive.
Many people have said they hate the remote because of no dedicated fast forward/rewind button. This is wrong, at the top of the remote, the directional pad surrounding the enter button has dedicated fast forward / rewind buttons. (the chapter forward/reverse buttons near "play" & "stop" can also be used to FF/RW by holding them down.)
The cons, like most people have said, is that it takes a couple seconds for the player to turn on & load the disc. On: 2008-02-05
I got this particular upscaling DVD player because I dont feel the need to buy HDDVDs until they lower in price. Ill worry about HDDVDs in a few more years.
This player had some extra features that put it over the competition such as the USB port. I can plug in my ipod and my flash drives and listen to MP3s, look at photos etc. This was a big selling point as my home theater has robust home stereo sound and I listen to a lot of music.
Overall, for the price it does its job fine. But I see areas that it could be better.
This player does a good job upscaling dvds but sometimes Ive noticed a "grain" to the images in certain scenes with bright lighting. The DVD is slow to turn on and load but that is a very minor inconvenience. They could have made the USB and MP3 CD navigation much better. The info for each folder is not in the same structure or order as it appears on my computer and the text information is converted to random three letter nonsense.
I understand I could pay more for a player that would probably solve these issues so Im actually pleased with what I see as a budget player that gives me what I want.
On: 2008-02-05
I ordered this player along with the TV (Samsung 40" 1080P) as I did not have a HD 1080p tape player. One of the advertized advantages is the ability to upgrade the lower vidio recordings to 1080p.
This was a mixed success. I need the closed caption (or english subtitles) as I have poor hearing.
I had to reduce the uplink to 720 in order to also see the captions.
Disappointed!

I found it a bit noisy at start up and after about ten minutes goes away. I opened the tray and found dust in tray and looked like it was burning the tray. Like the disc holder was not big enuogh for disc. Other than that plays quality picture with great resolution. On: 2008-02-02
I bought this system mainly to play AVI files on my TV. Ive had a D-Link DSM-320 system for a year now to play the files directly off my PC, but the picture always gets a bit squished to fit my TV even though I set it to the best setting for that. Plus, even though I have it hardwired to my network (not wirelessly) the large format video tends to be jerky on the D-Link system.
For my USB connection on the DVP5982 Im using relatively inexpensive Kingston 1 or 4 Gig memory sticks to hold the files, and even with those the videos play great. Maybe once every three or four hours of viewing the video freezes for a second or two, but the audio keeps going, and when the video unfreezes after a few seconds it always fast forwards for a few seconds to catch up with the audio and keeps going fine. I havent noticed any jerkiness. The videos always play in their original aspect ratios, so everything always looks like its supposed to. Fast forwarding and rewinding works great, as compared to the D-Link which that was always an issues.
Some people have mentioned that the remote is an issue, but it has all the normal features youre looking for, and Ive found it fine.
Ive tested other file formats (music, photos), and they all work fine. Normal DVDs play fine as well, so no complaints in that area.
Overall this DVD player does exactly what I wanted it to do, and Im very happy with my purchase. On: 2008-01-31
This is a great 1080P upconverting player and its unlockable for region free playing. The USB port works good for smaller files either thumb drives or external hard drives, but larger ones its not watchable because it skips too much. The remote is cheap at best, but the unit does have a very sleek look to it. Over all you cant lose for $60. If only this player can play larger files smoothly through the USB port, then it would be 5 stars. On: 2008-01-30
I bought this unit for 2 reasons... ability to play region free (and PAL) and the feedback regarding high quality HDMI unpconverting.
Region free (and PAL) : This is sensational, evens plays a Hongkong PAL dvd that nothing else besides my laptop could handle.
HDMI unpconverting : My Toshiba player has much better image quality. I knew the Toshiba was good, but now I fully understand how good. My wife could immediately tell the difference too. The 5982 does a reasonably good job and I am content, but it is not the leading edge of image quality.
For the $38 I paid (included S&H), absolutely no complaints. Hopefully it will last a long time. If the HDMI quality was there, I would buy another as a backup. On: 2008-01-30
I was already pleased with the upscaling picture, look, and ease of use on this DVD player when I found out the best thing:
This player plays everything. I dont have to change video formats on movies and clips from the computer in order to watch them on this player. I just burn avi files, wmv, divx files etc... directly to a disc and they play. No converting required. (so I can have about 5 full length movies on a DVD)
I have lent these DVDs to many friends. All of them had to do hours of converting in order to play the movies.
A great player until the Blue Ray vs HD-DVD war is settled. On: 2008-01-28
This is a great item. It allows me to use my jump drives and store more content on them then a typical DVD disc. I like the size and the price. We have also found that Phillips products are very reliable. On: 2008-01-28
I purchased this unit with the sole intent of playing DivX Ultra videos from a USB Hard Drive. When doing so, as others have mentioned, the menu and chapter navigation for DivX is a bit clunky, but it is "functional" if you are patient or only need quick access to Load / Play / Pause / Resume or Stop and return at a later time to the same spot in the video where you left off.
For this purpose I found the DVP5982 to meet my needs:
DivX Playback from USB Drive:
** TIP **
For anyone thinking about using the DVP5982 to play DivX Ultra videos directly from a USB hard drive or flash drive -- the DVP5982 doesnt seem to recognize videos with a .divx extension, but if you rename a DivX Ultra video to have a .mpg extension, they will then be recognized and play about 90% of the time provided the file size does not exceed 2GB (if it does it becomes hit and miss). I do not know if the same is true if the videos originate on a DVD or VCD as Ive only tested using a USB Drive.
For the price and with Amazons free shipping, this unit is a good buy as of January 2008.

The "all region" player does not function an as "all region" player right out of the box. The manual will not help you. after repeatedly requesting an explanation from the seller i was eventually told that I needed to enter an obscure code that they provided me via email. The code does work and does activate the "all region" PAL functionality but what a pain. Dont buy this unit for its PAL functionality unless youve got some time on your hands and enjoy a project. On: 2008-01-26
I bought this while searching for a region-free dvd player. I paid a lot more than this price plus shipping and handling from another vendor because they did not list the model number 5982. This annoyed me because it is the same dvd player. How to reset the region code to make it region-free is listed in one of the reviews on this webpage.
http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B000Q094RO/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?%5Fencoding=UTF8&showViewpoints=1
It plays my European dvds fine.
On: 2008-01-26
The model number is 5982. Search under regular dvd players, i.e. not region-free dvd players and you will find a better price. Just note how to reset the region code that is given by another in the reviews. On: 2008-01-25
Good product. The unit itself is very sleek and very very wide...
The remote is flimsy and cheaply made, but works well. The menu screen looks like something from the 80s, but again, it works. I used this along with my Sandisk 4gb Titanium. Please note that this unit 5982 is NOT compatible with the Sandisk 4gb w/ U3 software. To make it work, you must unistall U3 which comes preloaded in the flash drive and format the drive with fat32.
AFter the uninstall, it worked nicely. On: 2008-01-25
Have several, needed multi format. Works extremely well. Only negative is lack of "time remaining" when DVD is playing in the Display/Info. It will be nice to see all 3 times on the same page: Time Elapsed, Time Remaining, and Total Time. Also if support for HD USB devices can be provided it would make it a terrific device. Hope these upgrdes get implemented in a firmware update. On: 2008-01-24
The product is very slow with a horrible remote. The remote even doesnt
have an open/close button. On: 2008-01-24
When I purchased this I was not sure it was going to work with my TV. I want to let those with 1080i max HDTVs that it lets you set it for your set. The menus can be a bit tricky until you get familiar. As a quick clue when you hit set up on the remote you need to use the right arrow to access the Video menu. You need to set the 1080i there or your SD DVDs will not upcovert. Once you get that done ENJOY! I couldnt believe my JAG DVDs in HD, WOW. I highly recommend using an HDMI cable. This is a great unit for the money.
I find the remote just fine, others think it doesnt weigh enough. It is straight forward and easy to use what a pleasant surprise.
The customer help line is great and quickly answered my question and had me up and running in 5 min.
My only complaint is the power cord is a bit short, I had to use an extension as my media center long. Aside from that it is great. If anything changes soon I will update my review. On: 2008-01-23
I have a 4 Gig Sandisk USB stick which contains the U3 platform software. It would not work in this player. I also have a 512 Meg USB stick and it worked just fine.
After talking with Sandisk I tried using the U3 software to delete its self. Once that is done the drive is reformatted and U3 is gone for ever. It now works fine in this player. A format of the drive will not remove the U3 software. You have to use the remove option in the status and settings portion of the U3 menu.

I have this DVD player over a month. It works great, dont have any problem. Very nice DVD player, easy to set up and very clear picture with the HDMI cable connect to the LCD HDTV. Play all region DVD player. Plays CD,VCD, DVD, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW,DIVX 1 to 6, MP3, and JPEG. It has a USB port. On: 2008-01-23
This player has excellent quality output. Playing .Avi files and some .Mpegs too (not sure how many types of .mpegs but played the ones I have tested so far). Also the USB port on the front is an awesome feature. You can put a movie file on a memory stick (thumb drive) lets say a 700mb .avi on a 1GB Thumb drive, pop it in the front of the DVD Player and press the USB button on the remote, Bang, It plays. No more need to burn CDs. (Although you could use a DVD-RW and keep burning movies on them as well).. Theres a button on the front that you can hit to put it into 1080i or 1080p mode. Video files play amazingly clear, if theyre ripped well.
Im not crazy about the remote. I dont yet see a function that will tell me how far into the movie I am, and how much is left. The remote is small and limited functionality, but if you dont like too much clutter on functions on a remote, it still does anything you need to do. One other thing I havent figured out yet is this "sleeper mode" function. If I pause the movie, 1/2 hour, or 1/hour, Im not sure the time, it goes to sleep. You then have to turn it on, restart the movie, and scroll sometimes a long way to where you were. (on video files .avi) Ive turned this funcion off, yet it still goes to sleep. NOTE: I never read the manual ! :) So following the easy screen menus may not be the solution. Final opinion, Great player for the money, plays most everything, USB function is great, HDMI, Great picture, Fast enough from startup (some players take forever) Cool looking, sleek black, Id say its a winner. On: 2008-01-22
Recently purchased this DVD player (region free) from an Amazon seller and discovered it is actually quite a cheap unit. Crappy little remote that has the look and feel of something that will get busted if one looks at it sideways. The player itself is not much better in terms of ruggedness and workmanship. As soon as I connected the HDMI cable, I was greeted to a screen that constantly went from on to blank to on again. Tried two other HDMI cables, but the problem persisted. Had to return it to the seller, who fortunately will accept returns. Personally, Id look to spend a little more and acquire a better model. This unit has the appearance of one that you might be unlucky enough to receive at a $20 gift exchange at Christmas. Steer clear. On: 2008-01-22
Had it for a month and It Works and Looks Great. Did not have a problem of viewing regular DVDs in a full 1080i resolution... Although, never was able to up-convert to full 1080p. All in All, nice upgrade from my regular DVD-player. On: 2008-01-22
I have a 42" LCD 1080P HDTV. I have this DVD player hooked up via HDMI Cable and it works perfectly. It upscales ALL DVDs that I watch to 1080P quality and the Progressive Scan on it is great. I have had no problem playing DIVX Movies that I download and use from my 160GB External Hard Drive. I Strongly Reccommend to ANYONE! On: 2008-01-21
I had a large collection of Region 2 DVDs that I needed to be able to play in the US. The Philips makes a good multi-region backup DVD player (once youve entered the code).
Picture quality is excellent - played on Sony 52" LCD I compared a Pirates of the Caribbean regions 2 DVD upscaled to 1080p from the Philips to a Blue Ray version played via a PS3 and the difference was minimal unless you are up close to the TV.
The remote control, menus and other features are not great - but acceptable given the price - I would recommend this DVD to anyone needing a good multi-region, or just a new DVD player without wanting to spend a fortune On: 2008-01-21
This was one of the BEST products Ive ever purchased for such a reasonable price. I get a clear picture on my 57" DLP T.V., my boss, Mike helped me in choosing this product and I think it was one of the best decisions Ive ever made concerning electronics. If youre going to purchase a upscale DVD Player Im telling you to go with this Philips 1080P, you will be PLEASED!!! On: 2008-01-21
I found this DVD player quite convenient. Just plug your Hard Drive and start playing movies. USB feature is quite good. Its been with me for last 3 months and never showed any sign of any problem. On: 2008-01-20
very satisfied, this reads most cd/dvd formats not like other brands of dvd player. love the slim design but i wish it was shorter in lenght though. On: 2008-01-20
After benchmarking a Sony 480p player to this one, improved detail is very discernable on a 1080p Sony 46" LCD. Recommended.
I was truly surprised by the stunning upconvert of my digital camera photos: they show at very high resolution, not like you see from a bunch of jpgs on a CD.
Not at all bad for the low price. On: 2008-01-20
I am very happy with this DVD player. I think it does a good job of upconverting to HD. I have it coupled with a Sharp Aquos LCD and the picture quality is amazing. On: 2008-01-20
The player works as advertised and I was able to play various files through the USB port from a memory stick without any problems. Two things it would be nice to have that it didnt have (or claim to have) are more than 8 characters in the file name and the ability to play DivX HD. The player puts out a 1080p signal but only in upconvert. It refuses to play a DivX file with 1280x720 resolution. But then it didnt claim to be able to do that either. On: 2008-01-20
Philips DVP5982 1080p Upscaling DVD Player
This is great product. The fact it 1080P upconversion is great. Menu is ok but not as hard as most people are saying setup could be. I found the setup to be fine.
The fact the USB drive connection seems to be limited to certain USB thumb drives is lame. I have two thumb drives and both could not attach to the dVD player. I see it as a challenge to find which one works. Other then that the product is slim and nice and easy to install.

On: 2008-01-19
I had purchased the Toshiba HD-A3 HD-DVD player on Christmas Eve in order to play an HD-DVD formatted movie my daughter was to receive. I had researched Blu-ray and HD-DVD and really couldnt make sense, at the time, on who would be the winner. After Warners announcement (around 1/11 or so) that it would only support Blu-Ray, the death of HD-DVD was imminent. So, I returned the HD-A3 player to a local retailer for a refund. I also decided that I would not invest in Blu-Ray because of the expensive players and the unsettled versioning. I wasnt about to drop $300+ for a Blu-Ray player only to learn that newer models would be out by years end. The current models cant be upgraded. Yes, I know Play Station 3s can be upgraded, but right now I dont really need/want a PS3 player.
So, I was on a search for a decent up-converting player. The Phillips DVP5982 had high reviews and was a top seller on Amazon. Unfortunately, I ordered my unit from someone else because the price was a little cheaper. Due to the retailers nearby distribution center, I got it basically overnight compared to waiting 2-3 days for Amazons shipping.
Everything about the Phillips player is easy to operate. The remote is well designed, menu systems are logical. If you are not up on current technology, you may become confused with some of the settings, 780p, 1080p, HDMI, etc. I think the Toshiba HD-A3 player did a better job at upconverting basic DVDs, but this Philips machine does quite a decent job. Im pleased.
The USB port is a nice feature but is rather slow with modern, large jpg files. It is probably faster with scaled down pictures that are not so large in size. I think Id rather burn the pics to a DVD and view them that way instead of waiting for each to load via USB.
Power up time is a little slow. You may wonder if you actually turned it on or not. DVD load time is about average to other players. On: 2008-01-19
