Ill keep this short and sweet. Bought this unit for about 760. Theyre still going for 1100 in the stores. Tv works flawlessly. Minor blemish on front side panel - cant see it 95% of the time. Stand holds tv a few degrees off kilter, but not a problem. I will DEFINITELY buy again from here! On: 2008-03-31
I bought my Samsung TV about a month ago from Circuit City. After considering Vizio very seriously (from Sams Club), I decided to go with a stronger brand name and pay a little more. I found this TV on sale for 1100 bucks at Circuit City and I think this is an excellent deal. I am very happy with my purchase even though it was about 200 bucks more than the Vizio model I was considering (a 42 inch for 900 bucks). One factor that swayed me was the warranty and customer service angle. I called Samsung customer service BEFORE I bought the TV and got some excellent information about the TV itself and the warranty. I actually talked to a guy that owned the same model (I actually believed him based on some things he told me). Based on my conversation, I believe that the customer service will be great. I also found out that they have in-home service on the warranty, which is a good selling point. In terms of the TV itself, it has a great picture, nice onboard sound, and a very sharp physical look (in terms of the frame, stand, etc.). The HD channels look awesome without messing with the default picture controls. The SD channels look just OK, but I consider part of the reason I rate it as "just OK" is because its in comparison with how the HD looks. The PIP feature is what I read it was.... sort of a cheap PIP feature-set. I would have liked a more feature-rich PIP function. But thats about the only thing I dont like about it. Overall, Id rate this TV as excellent and recommend it to everyone. On: 2008-03-26
I have had my TV a month now and I love it. The picture is great and with all the hook up options I have my choice of media to use. My only problem is the sound could be a little better. It is supposed to have a type of surround sound but I have yet to hear it. The sound is great but no surround sound to it. I love the TV and hope it continues to do great. Amazon is a great place to buy from as well. TV arrived on time and no problems from their end. On: 2008-03-15
I bought this TV Nov.6, 2007, and have had it for a little over 4 months. It has lived up to my expectations 100%.
We hung it on a fixed wall mount in a room with a lot of windows, yet we have no problem with glare, even when looking at the TV from an angle. We have HD satellite and over-the-air HD feeding it via HDMI cable and the picture is great.
I attached a computer video cable to the back of it before mounting it to the wall, and now and then I hook my notebook computer up to it and put on a slide show of pictures with music background or put on my aquarium screensaver (which changes aquariums every couple of minutes to prevent burn-in).
Although the price was good for an LCD, shortly after getting this for our den, I bought a 65" Mitsubishi DSL HD TV for the living room for only a few hundred dollars more. If you want a bigger picture and dont need to wall-mount the TV, I recommend a DSL. For one thing, DSL will last a lot longer and will be much cheaper than an LCD or plasma of the same size.

My review on the purchase of Samsung LNT4042H 40" LCD HDTV
This HDTV is everything and more than what I was expecting. Many types of inputs Great Output
I m very pleased with The product and the help and deal that Amazon did for me. 5 Star purchase On: 2008-02-25
Samsung LNT4042H 40" LCD HDTVI purchased this HDTV on Tuesday 2/20/2008 and received it Thursday 2/22/2008.WOW!!! I was really impressed (I did not expect it for at least 10 days). I am awe struck by the picture, crisp and incredibly clear. I researched over 40 HDTVs since 10/2007 and finally bought the SAMSUNG 4042H for under $ 1000.00. It may be an "entry level" unit, but it definately has "high end" quality.
I recommed calling Samsung for a warranty 1-866.309.9907 - Best coverage for the money. I wish it had the memory stick option for viewing digital photos but for the money I am very pleased. On: 2008-02-24
Pros:
This is one perfect TV for the price, amazing picture, more that what I expected.
Cons:
Samsungs advertising concerning the PIP is missleading,
PIP only works with analog TV, and the VGA input, so the
PIP is debatable. On: 2008-02-13
This is a great flat screen. All I did was take it out of the box and began watching it. It has great picture quality and color. Recommended over others by a Best Buy employee but Amazon had a much better deal. Great value! On: 2008-02-13
Im happy with this TV. It is my first LCD TV set and the image is much better for High-Def channels, but not so much for standard channels. Also, in close-up scenes with rapid motion the image seems to kind of break down into pixels (for just an instant), I dont know if this is always the case with LCD TVs. However, I will never again buy a TV from Amazon, because the Eagle "White Glove" delivery service is awful: very little choice in delivery times and very disorganized - it took them four tries to deliver my TV successfully! On: 2008-02-11
Im pleased with this tv. For its price, the picture you get is pretty good. I think plasmas might still give a brighter crisper picture, but I liked the fact that LCDs weigh less, are more energy efficient and are less reflective (my living room has a lot of windows). This tv doesnt blow me away, but it kicks the butt of my 27" CRT.
Since cable companies and satellite tv feeds only offer a handful of channels in 1080i/720p and HD/BluRay players cost a fortune I saw no reason to jump to 1080p. Im convinced that clarity is dependent on your viewing distance and screen size. Bigger is not always better (Im not just saying that for my boyfriend). Even if you have an analog feed, if your viewing distance is proportional to your screen size, the picture still looks OK. Any movie, either broadcast on HD channels or viewed from my DVD player (not an upconverter), is pretty great. But, you shouldnt be watching it 2 feet from the tv, where the image appears grainy. However, watching live HD sports feeds are AWESOME in quality. Amazing 1 feet to 12 feet from the tv. In order to reap all the benefits of HD, the program must be filmed and broadcast in HD quality. Its all about the actual feed.
However, Eagle shipping... eh... it was ok. Grant it, shipping was free, but it took 10 days to get here. PA to GA to PA to CT finally to my home. I thought for sure it would be quicker, but, no. Slightly disappointed about that. However, once it arrived in CT, they did call to schedule delivery and it arrived in one piece and fully functioning, which was nice.
Watching sports and movies on my couch has never been more enjoyable. Thank you HD technology. On: 2008-02-08
Cant believe I got this much tv for the price I paid. Very satisfied. Picture is fantastic..size was perfect for my space. A little disapointed with the sound quality but I added speakers and that was good enough. Amazon cust service reps were so helpful, made me feel very comfortable with my purchase...delivery was supper smooth. I recomended this unit to 2 friends. Supper Bowl sunday was a good day in New York...thanks Amazon. On: 2008-02-08
I bought this back in May 07 when it was a few hundred more. Well worth the money. Ive had absolutely no problems with this TV since I bought it. I researched for months before buying. Screen is incredible for a 720 p, which rivals some 1020s Ive seen at the big box stores. You can save screen settings for movies or video games and this TV will remember the setting. HDTV reception is very good, depending on your geography and external antennae. Swivel stand comes in handy. Great for movies, video games, and all around TV watching. CONS: the remote is weak, but it isnt terrible. Shiny black border can reflect light. Despite those minor quibbles, this is one of the best purchases Ive ever made. On: 2008-02-05
I highly recommend this TV for people who have average room size and will be watching sports and movies. The refresh rate of this TV is high so it provides a much better picture during fast action sports. The TV looks great and a 40" size fits well in rooms where you can view from 7-12 feet away.
I looked at the same size and brand 1080i tv side by side to this 780i and the difference was so slight that it was not worth the extra money for me. Most peoples eyes arent sensitive enough to tell the difference unless the TVs are right next to each other and they are 4 feet away.
I recommend tweaking the color and image settings for your viewing location using a THX certified DVD like "Cars" where there is a calibration guide in the extra features section. It made a real difference in how the TV looked.
I recommend this TV for folks who want a great product at a great price. If you are willing to compromise on a few small things, like going from 42" to 40", and going with 780 instead of 1080 you can save a lot of money. On: 2008-01-26
The 40 Samsung LNT4042H is the first HDTV Ive ever purchased, and I am very happy about this purchase. I did a ton of research on many makes and models.
First decision I had to make is 720P or 1080P. After good amount of research I decided that 720p is perfect for my 40inch TV for two reasons.
a) We wont be able to see any difference between 720p and 1080p if the screen less than 50inch
b) Currently there are no 1080p transmissions on air. They are not scheduled to be in near future due to bandwidth issues. dont be fooled by people trying to sell you on 1080p
So I think its a waste of couple of hundred dollars for un-used 1080p option.
Pros.
a. HDTV quality is excellent
b. 3 HDMI inputs
c. USB input for firm ware updates
d. Sound quality is very good. I am using TV sound rather than my home theater for normal TV viewing
e. High contrast ratio 10000:1
Cons
a. It takes well 3-4 seconds to switch on
b. It takes about 2 sec to change between inputs
SD programming looks surprisingly OK - and this TV is not designed for SD programming. Samsung does a great job of making SD content look good, which was important for us. We also get many digital channels and a few HD channels all for free with the TVs built in tuner.
I also bought a Samsung HT-x50 Samsung HT-X50 5.1-Channel 5-Disc DVD Home Theater System home theater with upconverting capability to go along with this TV. I am really enjoying the movies watching on this TV with home theater setup.
All in all, Im very pleased with this Samsung HDTV and definitely recommend this to all who are in the market looking for TV in 37-42 inch range.

The TV is great. It took quite a few attempts to adjust the picture (color, contrast, darkness) but now it looks fantastic. It is a little slow to start when turning it on. What I did not like was the delivery. Not only were they 2 days late, but the delivery guy called from 3 hours out and told me I would have to meet him down the road but assured me the TV would fit into a small SUV. I reminded him I was getting white glove service but he didnt seem to care. On: 2008-01-14
This Samsung 40" HDTV that I purchased from Amazon is a great TV. My wife and I just love it,the picture is very clear and the shows in HD are amazing. On: 2007-12-30
Love it , Love it. Only problem is that I added a seran sound to the product, now I am stuck with 3 remote control ( cable, seran sound, and samsung) Upon calling Samsung inorder to set up the remote to operate the cable box (scientific atlantic/cable vision) I was informed that they are not compatable with the set up (eventhough the setup code for my cable company are in the owners manual). So now to change volume, source, on/off- I am stuck with 3 remotes and it is total confusion just trying to figure out which is sound,on/off buttons ,etc, etc. Samsung told me that buying a universal controller might solved some of the problems. This is pending. Otherwise the TV is just lovely (picture, sound, colors). It tends to get dusty quickly because of the finish. On: 2007-12-29

My need was simply for a flat panel TV that I could hang on the wall...a tube TV and stand would take up too much floor space. So, High Definition (HD) was not important to me. But, just try to find a flat panel that is not HD...nearly impossible.
I have this TV hooked up to a satellite service that is broadcasting in Standard Definition (SD) and connected by a coaxial cable. I have left my tube TV hooked up beside this TV for comparison purposes. So, my observations are based upon a side-by-side comparison of a 27" tube TV and this 40" flat panel. I have the flat panel set to the 4:3 picture size, since my reception is in SD. So, the picture sizes of these 2 TVs are very close.
Satellite Service - Standard Definition (SD) - Coaxial Connection Pros and Cons
Pros: More vibrant colors than the tube TV, although skin tones were difficult to tune in...it is possible, but requires some patience. Picture is much brighter than the tube TV, though this is adjustable to suit your needs. Stationary images are significantly clearer than the tube TV. Far away movement has similar clarity as the tube TV.
Cons: Close up images that are moving, especially faces, are somewhat choppy in motion, blurry and grainy. I have found myself adjusting to this so it is not quite so annoying...some people have not even noticed it. Difficult to tune in skin tones. Picture is quite grainy all over, at a viewing distance of 5 feet or less...over 5 feet, this is not a problem.
Since this TV has 2 coaxial inputs, I was able to connect a "bow-tie" antenna and pick up a couple of Over The Air (OTA) HD signals. So, I am able to compare HD pictures to SD pictures.
Over The Air Antenna (OTA) - High Definition (HD) - Coaxial Connection Pros and Cons
Pros: Everything is quite clear and detailed. The "cons" listed above do not exist if you have a program that was recorded in HD and the signal is also in HD.
Cons: None
Keep in mind, with any HD TV, even though the broadcast signal may by coming into your TV as HD, that doesnt mean the program was actually recorded in HD. So, the quality of the image is at the mercy of the quality of the recording as well as the broadcast signal.
Sound: In the store, with other TVs broadcasting the same sound, this TV sounded rather impressive when the volume was increased. But, in my home, it does not seem quite as impressive. It does have a few different sound settings as well as a customizable equalizer, which allows for personal preference. The sound is not bad, just not the same as in the store, perhaps the other TVs had some impact on the overall sound. Or, maybe the connection (coaxial vs. HDMI) and the broadcasting format has some impact as well. Im not sure exactly why it is less impressive.
Overall:
SD is slightly better than the tube TV...acceptable, not impressive. But keep in mind, this TV is not designed for SD either.
HD is noticeable clearer than SD. But, for my needs, not enough to make me rush out and get HD service from my satellite company.
If HD is not important, and you can spare the floor space, save yourself a lot of many and get a tube TV with a digital and analog tuner. Though these are slowly disappearing and there are few models to choose from.
If you want to see how good this picture is with ideal recordings, signal and connections, just visit your local electronics store. In this ideal situation, the picture is incredible, better than most...even some of those with 1080i resolution. On: 2007-12-04
this samsung is a great tv I just want to know if anyone has a problem with the tv going to mute by itself watching a dvd or high def program.
if this has happen to you what did the repairman say was the problem. On: 2007-11-14
This TV is Perfect for what it is advertised to do. I compared this TV and a 1080p next to each other in the store and there was absolutely no difference and I was 2 feet away from each TV.
Some reviewers complain about it looking so much better in the store and the stores have fake High Def signals going to the TVs to make them look better. This TV looked just as good in my home than it did in the store. REMEMBER that in order to get the High Def from a DVD player or other Video source, you need to use a HDMI cable which you can get here on Amazon for only a few dollars or in store for about $39. All these complainers have to do is read the instructions to realize that a HDMI cable is what is needed for the high def.
It is also worth getting a DVD player that will up-convert your older DVDs to High Def. I highly recommend the Samsung 1080p7 DVD player which costs only $89. Make sure that you get a HDMI cable at the same time or you will not get the better picture.
AWESOME TV and well worth the money!!!
I almost forgot to mention that this TV has a USB port. The port is great for firmware/software upgrades when new firmware comes out on a regular basis. Check Samsungs website regulary as they are great for their customer service and product support. On: 2007-10-17
Im not knowledgeable at all when it comes to tech/gadget stuff. Fortunately I have a ton of friends that are.
So I got this Samsung 40" & its great. I chose LCD over plasma because the screen wasnt shiny & it reduces a bunch of glare plus I didnt want to take any chances with burn-in or whatever.
The contrast/color is great & the speakers on the tv are totally decent. I have no need to bother with a speaker system. Saved me a lot of time & space & no wires running around my walls. :)
Amazons Super-saver shipping is great as well. They use Eagle & theyre amazing. Got my TV a few days before the scheduled delivery.

This is my second Samsung LCD television as I first bought a LN-T1954H 19 inch Samsung for my motor home. I was so impressed with that picture and many features that I wanted a 40 inch LCD for my home. If there are any flaws, I certainly havent found them. I cam completely satisfied with my purchase. Well, all these rave reviews dont seem to mention that most of us with a dvd player are not going to get a better image than a regular old cathode rayed tv. Reason? The picture at the video stores is run through hi-def cable so the image at home is always less comparable. When I hooked this baby up I was sad. My 10 year old Toshiba 36" set looked just as good if not better. And dont even think of playing a vhs through it! Yikes!
New technology just sucks in allot of ways. Sorry! So, unless you are running a blu-ray machine, I suggest waiting a few years till this piece of plastic antiquated technology comes down to around 200 bucks-which is what it is really worth, heck, what all of these sets are worth! Way over inflated for what you are paying for. Of course, by then, the 3D wave generators with plasma interface units will be on the market complete with sensory feedback. Ahhh, the future! I decided to purchase this TV after seeing it on display at a local electronics store. The picture has great color and clarity from various angles, and the sound is decent as well. There doesnt seem to be much glare from other light sources. I would recommend making sure the top area is well ventilated since it does put off a decent amount of heat after long viewing.
Overall, Im happy with my purchase. On: 2007-09-30
I got this about a month back and am very happy to have it.
Picture quality is just great!
On: 2007-09-30
Picture is great, but the picture in picture is something to be desired.
The sound leveler doesnt do much to control sound fluctuations.
Over all, I wish I had bought a different brand. On: 2007-09-25
Ive researched hdtvs for months and I finally took a chance on this tv and I dont regret it one bit. Ordered it on Amazon on Monday at Noon, came from Ohio and was in Texas by Friday morning. Scheduled white glove wasnt till Tuesday but they let me drop by the warehouse and loaded it up for me to take home that day. Setup was easy and the picture is the best Ive seen. I was always skeptical of hdtvs in stores because they feed dvd or fake signals to make everything look good. When I saw this on hd, Id never seen something so good in any store.
The big thing for me was, how will standard definition look and what can the turner pick-up. In Austin with a regular cable feed without a box, we picked up 8 hdtv channels from the major networks, to pbs, and even espn classic. Standard definition looks amazing, and hd is simply stunning. Im getting free hdtv channels without an expensive hdtv package or an outdoor or indoor antenna. How can you beat that?
I would recommend this to everyone, the deal compared to local stores, ability to not pay tax or shipping is just too good to pass up. The sound is great, the features are rich, you cant go wrong with this. On: 2007-09-24
TV is great. I was skeptical about ordering a big ticket item over the interenet but the order went through without any hitches and arrived earlier than expected.
I couldnt be more happy with the product, amazon and the price i paid. On: 2007-09-24

First thing first. I see that Amazon no longer is selling this model at their great price. I was VERY lucky to get it on time. Also, their "house" delivery service, Eagle, was exceptional. The driver came in my house, was very patient, well mannnered and when asked to stay till I test out the TV, was more than happy.
Bravo to Amazon and Eagle.
As my title description, the Samsung LNT-4042H CANT be an entry level LCD. Right out of the box, colors, contrast, clarity IS incredible! Especially when watching in HD. I hooked up a piece of junk indoor antenna and the Samsungs HD tuner, sucked every HD channel in my area!
This is a fine piece of machinery.
I just recently lowered the backlight from the factory set 10 to 7. It looks better for me. All the other settings are the same.
The beautiful glossy frame is elegant. Rich looking. It has more inputs than Ill probably ever use.
Its very well designed. I love the swivel stand. A nice touch. I though it may not be useful, but that thought ended when I swung it to the right facing the dinning area.
I almost cried.
In conclusion. For anyone in the market for an "entry level" LCD, this Samsung is an amazing product.
It has performance, looks, and quality. I EXTREMELY, HIGHLY recommend it.
Now, go get one! On: 2007-09-16
Bought this for my mom and it was a great buying/delivery experience and a great product. No tax and no shipping charges. "White glove" delivery includes unpacking and placement and packaging haul-away, but not configuration/setup with other equipment (which I didnt expect anyway). Picture is spectacular. I gave only 4 stars because the audio quality was disappointing vs. my own JVC LCD - the Samsung has decent midrange and highs, but theres just no bass there - and because (as another reviewer noted) the glossy finish on the cabinet is highly reflective and is distracting in a bright room. These are quibbles, though, as mom is delighted with the TV and I would be happy to own one myself. On: 2007-09-14
I bought this TV from Amazon, after reading lot of good reviews, and I am happy to say that my decision till date has proved to be good. I got this TV delivered by Amazon on time. The person who delivered the TV opened and assembled the TV stand and checked everything was ok and the TV is perfectly delivered.
I have Comcast network, so after getting the tv I initially connected it through the normal "small box" (without displaying date and time in front, which Comcast is giving these days free with its digital comcast subscription) directly through the RF wire (Coaxial) cable and I was really scared to find that the picture quality was very pathetic. After researching somewhat on internet, I found that there is a separate box which you need to rent from Comcast to see the HDTV, which I finally got from Comcast with an additional $7.00 every month. This will also enable you to see HDTV and on demand channels.
After plugging in this box my TVs picture quality is perfect and I think its better than what I have seen for other Plasma TVs. I did lot of research on Plasma and LCD tv and went to see lot of TVs in stores, and I found that Plasma tvs are not that good, because of their "burn out" problem, and secondly, plasmas are only available above 42" inches. Since, my room is not that big, 13x16, and I have to place my TV on the smaller side of the room (13), I could not go more than this size. I think my decision to stick with 40" was good, because I personally feel that too big a TV in a small room looks really horrible, because when we sit very near to these big tvs, we strain our eyes, as well as get a blurry picture.
Moreover, while, other TVs provide a very basic sound quality with just 10 Watts of speakers, this TV has really good sound quality. So, if you are not thinking of buying a home theatre or an extra amplifier for your room, it would be a perfect TV for you.
Over all this product is a good quality product, and I absolutely have no problem with its picture and sound quality, and I am happy with my decision overall. I am writing this review, because I got so much help by reading reviews on lot of sites in deciding which tv to buy in my budget. On: 2007-09-07
I am very impressed with the Samsung LNT4042H. This is my first LCD HD TV and I am glad I made the investment. Although the instruction manual could be a little clearer, I easily set up the TV and enjoyed the clarity of the picture from the start. At this point I have made no adjustments to the color/picture since the pre-set settings seem to be correct. I love the hd channels but the standard def look good too. My only complaint is the shipping. Eagle promised to deliver the TV between 9 AM and 1 PM. I received the TV at 5:30 PM. In addition, the delivery people did not turn on or test the set upon delivery. If Eagle had called to say they were running late and given me a new delivery time I would have been satisfied. Instead, I had to call Eagle twice and received no definitive arrival time. I had to wait 8 ½ hours. Aside from the minor shipping problem an overall good experience. On: 2007-09-05
This tv is by far the best investment i have made in a long time. The colors are very crisp and show everything you want to see in a great tv. You cannot beat the price. The shipping was great took 2 days to be delivered and in perfect shape. Could not be any happier. On: 2007-08-31
its the best tv I ever had.
HD is amazing, even non HD picture quality is great.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone buying a LCD, and make sure you buy it from amazon, these guys are good !!

I spent a lot of time researching TVs and ended up picking this one based on the great reviews and the low price. So far, I couldnt be happier. When I looked at it in the store, I wasnt impressed with the picture, but read that the settings could easily be adjusted to make it a lot better. That was definitely the case. Out of the box, the HD picture was too bright and didnt look good at all, which was the same as in the store. But setting in on the "movie" mode lead to a perfect picture. On: 2007-08-29
I paid $1000 for this TV and it was worth every penny. I had looked at the 46 inch TV for $1299 and went to pull the trigger on that deal but it was out of stock so I settled for this TV. The over the air HDTV channels that you pick up with just a regular set of bunny ears is amazing. Easy to set up, sound is great. I compared a lot of LCD, PLasma and DLP tvs before buying this one. You cant really go off the pictures in the store because some are hooked up to HD and some arent. If you can get this TV for around a $1000 with free shipping, Id pull the trigger on it. The 40 Samsung LNT4042H is the first HDTV Ive ever purchased, and I couldnt be happier. I wanted a TV in the 37 to 42 range, and I did a ton of research on many makes and models. Some sets were less expensive, some were more, but this Samsung is "just right" when it comes to price, size, features, and quality.
The TV is set up in a small living room, and at the moment, we view more SD content than HD shows. We will soon be getting an HD box from Comcast, but right now the coax cable from the wall is plugged right into the TV. SD programming looks surprisingly good - much, much better than I thought it would look. Standard Def on some HDTVs looks absolutely horrid and unwatchable, but this Samsung does a great job of making SD content look good, which was important for us. We also get many digital channels and a few HD channels all for free with the TVs built in tuner. The HD of course is much better than the SD, but everything on this TV looks good.
Even the sound is great. Most HDTVs arent recognized for their sound quality, as everyone expects you to add external speakers to your set. But were not planning to do that anytime soon, and the Samsungs sound quality makes this unnecessary. Of course, it cant match a true 5.1 speaker setup, but Im very happy with the very nice sound coming from the Samsungs speakers.
I also bought a Sony DVP-NS77HB upconverting DVD player to go along with this TV, since I have a large library of standard DVDs. Im not ready to jump to HD-DVD or Blu Ray yet, but right now theres no need to, since regular DVDs look incredible on this TV when connected to the Sony with an HDMI cable. Just be sure not to pay the ridiculous high prices that some stores charge for cables. I got my HDMI gold plated cable for less than 8 bucks shipped.
And as mentioned, dont be fooled by people trying to sell you on 1080p. Many viewers say that if your TV is less than 60 in size and if you sit at least 10 feet from the screen, 1080p wont give you any noticeable difference in picture quality. For a 40 TV in a living room, 1080p just isnt worth it, IMO. Besides, a good solid 720p set with a nice contrast ratio (like this Samsung) will look better than a cheaply made 1080p set any day.
All in all, Im very pleased with this Samsung HDTV. I honestly dont think I could have made a better choice. No matter if youre an HDTV newbie or an old pro, the 4042H is definitely a set to consider.

I did a ton of research on all different kinds of TVs, from DLP to LCD to Plasma, as well as Sony vs. Samsung vs. Panasonic, etc. I decided that I wanted to stay at about the $1,000 price range, which I thought meant that either I could get a smaller version of a really nice TV, or a bigger version of a not-so-good TV. As I found out, this wasnt the case. I ended up finding a great TV for a reasonable price.
I decided against DLP, partially because of the screen door effect (when youre close enough, gridlines are very visible), and also because you have to replace a bulb every 6,000 hours or so (about every 3 years). Plus, DLP and LCD rear projection TVs only last about 40,000-45,000 hours. Compare this to LCD, which will last 60,000 hours (about 30 years) without ever having to pay for a bulb.
I decided against Plasma, partially because of the burn-in issue, and the fact that theyre heavier and less energy-efficient that LCDs. I also believe LCDs have caught up in terms of picture quality.
After looking extensively for about two months, the conclusion I came to was that this Samsung LCD had very comparable picture quality to the Sony and the Sharp, each of which wouldve cost several hundred dollars more for the same size. I decided on the Samsung after seeing many of my friends buying from them and being very satisfied with their purchases.
I purchased it on sale at Ultimate Electronics for $1259. True, the price was lower on Amazon, but I didnt feel comfortable buying something like this from an online store.
Overall, I am very satisfied with the TV (as you can tell by the 5 star rating). It is an exceptional value, with a 7000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and 3 HDMI ports. The sleek black frame makes this TV look beautiful even when its off. And when I play my DVDs with my Sony Upconverting DVD player (model DVPNS77H/B, $99 at Target), it looks absolutely amazing, producing a near-HD picture from a standard DVD.
Here are my picture settings for watching movies:
Picture: Movie
Contrast: 80
Brightness: 44
Sharpness: 15
Color: 56
Tint: G54-R46
Backlight: 9
Color Tone: Warm1
Black Adjust: Medium
Dynamic Contrast: High
Gamma: 0
Color Space: Wide
White Balance: 15 All
Color Control: 15 All
Edge Enhancement: Off
Digital NR: Auto
HDMI Black Level: Low
Energy Saving: Auto
Hope this helps you make a decision.

I ordered this TV via amazon and saved HUNDREDS on shipping and tax. With white glove service I was able to set this tv up in less than 5 minutes. The picture is fantastic and in line with the other reviewers but what really impressed me was the sound...Its incredible in surround mode for a tv. I got this Tv for under 1,100...which I think is a great deal for a samsung. Thanks again amazon! On: 2007-08-03
Picture is beautiful. I waited almost 2 years before purchasing my first LCD flat. I wished I had done it sooner! Very simple to set up. Awesome looking TV. Price is great! Amazon even credited my account a few days after I purchased it because they offered it for a little less than what I had paid for it. Now, thats Customer Service!! :) Delivery was on time and professional. If you are looking for an awesome looking TV, this is the one to get. Im having FIOS installed in the next couple of weeks. Cant wait to see the picture quality then! Hdmi 2m (6 Feet) Super High Resolution Cable On: 2007-08-03

All my PC monitors are Samsung, so I trusted they could make a good display. The only question was the electronics behind the display.
Im pleased. Regular TV is very nice and HD is great. Watching Wimbledon (normal TV), I had trouble seeing the ball against the grass. I tried adjusting the colors, but could never get it right. The other slightly annoying thing is that I have to go into the menu to switch it over to my DVD player (maybe Im just clueless).
I had a Panasonic plasma, which had burned out pixels right out of the box. I was nervous about plasma, and got this instead. I dont regret it. Picture quality is very nearly the same, and this one has no glare. On: 2007-07-30

I just got this TV set up in my home last evening and I couldnt be more pleased with it. For an "entry level" LCD HDTV, it displays an excellent picture- even on the standard cable channels! The High-def channels are absolutely beautiful. Overall the picture is very crisp and bright (VERY bright at the factory back light setting of 10; had to turn it down a few notches) and the colors are perfect as far as Im concerned. While Im sure extreme videophiles will disagree, I cant find any faults with this TV and would recommend it to anyone whos in the market for a flat-panel HDTV in this size and/or price range. This is my first review but I did a lot of research. Trust me. I returned a 42" 1080p Vizio for this model. I know I stepped down in resolution but resolution doesnt mean much when you dont have a good contrast ratio. And like others have said most cant tell the difference between 720p and 1080p at this size. I have this hooked up to my PS3 and it looks so much better than the Vizio. I highly recommend this tv. I got it at best buy for $1538.00 after tax, a mid range hdmi cable, and a four year in home service plan. I would also like to say that having 3 hdmi connections pushes it over the edge. I now have my digital cable, dvd player, and PS3 all hooked up via hdmi. PlayStation 3 (60GB) On: 2007-07-03
I spent months researching other TVs. I first bought Samsungs 42 inch plasma, but ended up returning it for this due to the glare off the plasmas glass display.
I bought this at CC for 1400. Its been 3 weeks since my purchase and I found out the price dropped to 1250 and with an online coupon offer on the CC website I got the price down to 1150.
It is a great deal! The money spent for this HDTV went a long way. I use it mainly for my Xbox 360 and HD DVD. It looks amazing. It pays a compliment to any room you set it in.
The one downside is the front panel around the power on button is loose. I went back to CC to see if there were any TVs that did not have the problem, but the other two the guy at the store and I looked at had that same problem. It is not important though, Im just nitpicky.
Over all great buy! I encourage you to go with this one. On: 2007-06-26
PROS:
* Beautiful picture, even from non-HD sources
* Full color, contrast, brightness and backlight controls
* stylish design
* Good selection of inputs
CONS:
* Glare off of plastic frame. It doesnt affect the picture, but can be distracting.
* Slow response time when flipping between input sources
* # of inputs is misleading (some connections are actually the same input, sharing a single audio-in)
OVERVIEW:
In the store, this was clearly the best picture in the price range, and even competed with some more expensive models from other brands. The whole Samsung line was a step above the others. At 40", its perfect for a bedroom or a medium sized living room.
The key for me is how well it handles an SD picture. We have yet to take the plunge and get any HD components, so this was important. It does a fantastic job, beyond pleased with the results.
Cant recommend this TV strongly enough.

I just got it from CC for 1340. I am very happy with my new TV. It is big enough for our LR - I was planning to get 42", glad did not. I highly recommend it. On: 2007-05-21
I did a lot of research on TVs in this price range and size. I chose this TV based on the reviews and specs of this product compared to many other comparable LCD / HDTVs. The Samsung LNT4042H delivers picture and sound at a terrific price. After all the research, this TV has all the bells and whistles and even Samsung does not list all the important features on their website. Amazing in every way! On: 2007-05-18
I compared this tv to just about every other 720p on the market and basically there is no comparison. This one beats them all. Only the 1080p Samsung was better. The picture quality from all the input sources produced above average to excellent results even without HD. The only HD source I have right now is over the air antenna and wow what a picture! The sound quality is much better than the Sharp products but a home theater makes it much more enjoyable. For the price you cant go wrong. I highly recommend this unit. On: 2007-05-18
Bought my first LCD flat panel and couldnt be happier.
Watching LOST is a whole new experience!!! You feel like you are in Hawaii with them... and I am ONLY using a Phillips HD antenna to get my HD programming right now!! Not bad for $25.
Great contrast and interpretation of blacks.
You may have to play around with the picture settings. Viewing mostly with the "Movie" mode with a little a bit of tweeking of the backlight.
Cant go wrong with this TV On: 2007-05-14
I bought this item here on Amazon for a few hundred cheaper than at the best electronics store and I have to say that it is a great buy for the buck. This TV is not the best LCD out there, since it is not 1080P with the highest contrast ratio, but for someone who does not care to have the best resolution, you woudnt even notice that it is not 1080P. It has sharp contrast, great picture (as long as the program/DVD is in HD), and even 480i broadcasts/movies look quite good. If youre not looking for the state of the art item, but rather a good quality TV at a good value, I would highly recommend this TV. On: 2007-05-01
3 HDMI, QAM tuner, Great picture quality, great price, etc..... I could go on and on with this TV. I use this mainly for HD-DVD and Xbox 360 and the picture is amazing. Its not 1080p but i really dont see the difference. Im picking HD broadcast thru analog cable and it works great. 1080p can wait especially when the prices go down. But if you need an HDTV now, pick up this one, you wont regret it.
