More Information

Out of Date     On: 2007-07-07

This unit is totally out of date. It is a discontinued item, per Garmin website. Technology has advanced way beyond this 1999 model. Dont waste your money buying this electonic antique.
Check out the updated Garmin III+

There is a newer III out which has an expanded database and allows for downloads from your computer. Check it out first, before buying this one, unless price is the main issue.
A must in field survey and mining sites

As a manager of a diamond and gold mining company, we dig test pits for evaluation of opening sites in West Africa and Brazil. As these test pits are evaluated it is sometimes months before we return to them. A lot can grow and change in three months where we work and without this product, we would be lost. It stands up to the very expensive $10,000.00 units and is much easier to use. A great product!
Garmin's Great!

Another great product from Garmin. Easy to use and understand -- especially for beginners. I bought one of these for myself and one for a family member. Garmin has excellent customer service and a proven track record of high quality products.

Keep in mind, however, it is against FAA rules to turn on any device that receives radio signals (including a GPS receiver) on an aircraft without the permission of the pilot!

EASY TO USE and program

I am with the U.S.Army and purchased a GPS III while in Albania on a mission. We used this unit everyday and compared it with our traditional navigation methods. The unit was accurate enough for navigation in a foreign country. It was also used while in Kosovo with the same accuracy. I have had the occasion to use the unit since returning to the US and it has performed flawlessly.
Excellent product. Easy and reliable

I got one as a present, but now use it all the time. Accurate positioning, and maps. Very easy U/I. Maps only go to the "numbered route" level, but still very useful (find the neighborhood, not the house).

Interesting and useful instrument

Recently spent a month motorcycle travel in Europe using GPS III with local database information. Extremely useful when unsure of location. Interesting to track route and time between destinations. Readily captures signal. Accurate enough to use on walking tour in strange cities - keeps track of routes followed - distance covered. Amazing technology.
Una gran ayuda / Great stuff!

I go out often with my mountain bike and binoculars to watch birds around Torreon, in Northern Mexico. The Garmin III has been a great help for the past year when travelling in terrain I know little of. Getting back to your car, to water, to safety, is easy with this navigational aid. It has served me well also to mark locations where I have seen unusual birds and later document these sightings
Outstanding Value

Ive been working in a systems engineering capacity with GPS for over 20 years and teach courses on the system at GWU in D.C. This is the unit I selected for my own personal use in ground navigation environments. The set performs well in foliage. Acquisition is generally very quick and battery life is very good. Free S/W upgrades from Garmins site are a real plus. (You can get manuals there too.) Displays are easy to use and make good sense plus they can be customized extensively to output variables of interest. Fergusons "GPS Land Navigation" book is a good companion book since the manual doesnt really describe land navigation very well.
A exceptional travel partner

Traveling around the world, I have found this little device to be a near necessity as well as a reliable friend. The map data does suffer from some poetic license (sharp curves, abbreviated details) probably necessary to make it all fit in such a small package. Next time, get a window seat on the plane and watch the trip progress. The Garmin video tape is a must-get accessory for this device in order to get the big picture on how to use all the bells and whistles.
It's more useful than I originally thought

I bought this on an impulse on a trip to Yosemite. I found it to be quite accurate and I use it all the time to navigate in the car in unfamilar areas, even though it doesnt have detailed street maps (I am not quite ready to buy the more expensive Street Pilot just yet). I also use it on my frequent airplane trips to see what landmarks Im flying over and how much time is left, etc.
