Very easy to use. Buttons are easy to push and are displayed in a very logical way, although the remote feels a little small, but still very easy to use. Ive used this so many times to record live performances and each time the recordings come out very well and even the bass is clear on the recordings. Ive had this MD recorder for a couple years and have had no problems with it whatsoever. Battery life is also really good and playback quality is very clear. On: 2001-10-10
I got mine in Japan several years ago, before it was released in the United States (mines a cool metallic blue in color). Its an extremely convenient product. I use it to copy Mp3s, CDs, and all sorts of things, and now that Im in college, its tons more convenient than using one of those tiny casette recorders to get down a lecture. The price has gone down considerably since I got it. I paid 50,000Y (about $420 US) and I still think its worth that price. The Sony equivelant is a little slimmer, but the Sharp has a much longer battery life, so this really is the better of the two. by: Anonymous On: 2000-12-18
i dont own this particular brand or model of mini disc player but i have had a competitors model for 10 months. my only advice: BUY AN EXTENDED WARANTY- the best one you can get. These are finicky gadgets that are prone to break. mine worked great right up to the time it quit, and was then replaced under an extended waranty (thank goodness). i would not buy one unless u can get an extended waranty. Note: i have never before bought of had to use an extended waranty on anything else, but these gadgets are more delicate. by: Anonymous On: 2000-12-07
I just got this thing the other day and have been fooling around with it. I just love what this little thing can do, I didnt realize its full capabilities until i read the maunual. Ive been able to record mp3s Ive been dying to take everywhere I go, and the analog recordings really dont sound that bad. I have yet to use the optical cable, but I think the quality there is near perfect. Snag one of these while you can, Im not sure how much longer theyll be making them. On: 2000-09-04
I just got this MD player and I absolutely love it! I find it to be much more convenient than having a CD player/burner combo, and the quality is great! Recording from a computer (that may not have a optical output) will require purchasing a mini-plug cable ($3.99) and connecting it from headphone output jack to the line in jack in the recorder. It is really easy! On: 2000-08-29
This player was my first md player. MY Goal was to move all my MP3 onto mini disc. But I am not sure how to connect the given optical cable to my computer. I dont know if i need buy another cable or do i connect it to my PC speaker or my sound card. If anyone read this please help me out Thank You On: 2000-07-09
Pros:- Comes with an optical cable. - Optical recordings are CD quality, I cant tell the difference. - This thing is TINY. (About the size of three minidiscs) - The included headphones are actually very decent. I wont be buying a separate pair as Id originally planned. - It actually has a sound meter so you know when youre recording sources volume is too high or low. - Extremely easy to record stuff.
Cons: - The included lithium battery must be inserted even when using an alkaline battery. - To use an alkaline battery, you must attach a separate plastic piece. Its small though. - The lithium battery is proprietary and can only be charged about 300 times. Thats still about a years worth of "everyday, normal" use for me.
Ive only had this thing for half a day and I absolutely love it. Using the optical cable, I recorded a few songs from my Sony DVD player to MD and I really couldnt hear a difference. This thing rules. Recordings made with the Line-In jack are about as good as it gets. There was some very faint background hiss during silence, similar to metal cassette recording, but that may have been due to my equipment. Something else I noticed... My friend has the Sony R70, which is very noisy when playing a disc. The only time this Sharp player makes any noise at all is when you turn it on (it clicks), switch tracks, and turn it off (it clicks again). Its perfectly quiet while playing a track. Definitely well worth its price. It comes with everything youll need, its small, easy to use, and excellent quality. On: 2000-07-07
You wont regret buying this one. Ever wondering which one to buy: Sharp MT821 or Sony R55 (also sold by Amazon.com)? Go for this one. With the same dimension, though costs more, you will get three times batery lifetime (12:4 hours). It feels solid in your hand. No whatsoever skip ever experienced. This one is a must-have. By the way, the unit has the 2nd best ATRAC chip of all MD recorders. It is only topped by MT831. ... Happy buying. On: 2000-05-08
well first of all, im a md maniac. ive used this sharp 821 as well as the 831, sharp st-531,st-55, st-50, sony r-90,e-90,e-77,e-75, e-44(now i use sharp 831 recorder and pioneer mdp mickey mouse version(cloning of sharp 531) md player.) as i remember, this 821 is a great recorder compared to the new 831. the 831 may be smaller and have more options on the interface, but the 821 has its own goods; such as its affordable price, bigger and simple jog dials compared to the 831.. id recommend the 821 for the first time users of the md. This is probably one of the best MD players available here in the states. I got mine several months ago and its still in great shape. I dropped mine on accident a few times, but it still works fine. Its very durable. Also, the sound quality is almost exactly like CD quality. The difference between them is so small, you wont even tell the difference. The maximum volume isnt that loud, but thats not really a problem. Recording stuff is so easy, anybody can do it. The battery lasts pretty long as well. Id say that you wont need to replace it for quite awhile. Most of the functions are similar to CD players (e.g. repeat, bass boost, etc.). But allowing you to name your MDs and the tracks is very nice. Since the cost of MDs are cheap, you can store hours and hours of whatever you want on them. I only have a few gripes about my MD player though. First, the buttons on the player can get worn out a little if you push them too much. Id recommend getting a carrying case with the player if you buy it. With it safely in the case, you can use the remote to control most of its functions. That way, your player wont look so worn out. Next, the headphones you get with your player are junk. Itd be better if you got your own. Also, I thought this player would be an exact copy of the Japanese version, but it wasnt. The Japanese version is more silverish on the outside, and so is the remote. But these are only minor things that annoy me. Overall, this player is one of the best you can get for the price offered. Sharp MDMT821 Ultra-Thin Minidisc Player/Recorder is VERY NICE! I have had mine for 5 months now, I dont know what I would do with out it. I got it in England, so I got the nice little bud headphones ;D I just love hooking it up to my computer and recording my MP3s in one easy step. Just hook it up, set the volume (easly done with the output bar on display), press sync-start and your away, another great thing is the optical recordings! WOW! Just hook it up and your away, no hastle with the volume, I call it a DIGITAL PORT ;D I cant tell the difference between a CD and a optical recording played on my Sharp MDMT821 Ultra-Thin Minidisc Player/Recorder. I just love the way it sits in my hand. I wouldnt say its light though, Id say it is a really good weight, it feels dense and very solid, and the silver finish is just awesome. For those who are wondering if the "record" red button lights up, it doesnt. Optical and Line input are feed through the same hole. It also has a seperate MIC INPUT, but I havnt tried that, the md features all the EDIT FUNCTIONS! you can put titles on your md, and at the touch of a button, it changes the text into "ABC", "abc", "123! ..." . It just makes it look really cool. Also, it features a BASS BOOST! 3 way. The max volume is "30", if you have the bass on "3" and the volume on 28, the bass is automatically cut down to avoid distortion. I recommend the Sharp MDMT821 Ultra-Thin Minidisc Player/Recorder to everyone, looks great, sounds great, and the Li-Ion battery is AWESOME! Charge it when ever you like, un like most cell phone batterys..... On: 2000-04-02
I recently purchased the Sharp MDMT821 Ultra-Thin Minidisc Player/Recorder and it is wonderful! It is extremely small, lightweight and thin. The blank minidisks are easy to handle and once you play around for a bit recording is easy. The quality is identical to CD quality except when using the digital optical cable in which case the sound quality is unsurpassed. This was my first time buying anything besides a book online and although I was a little skeptical about it at first Amazon came through. The product was well packaged and arrived three days after I ordered. A definite buy for anyone interested in top quality sound and convenience. On: 2000-04-01
I have this unit for a month now, all i can say is WOW! The construction is solid with different button lay-outs for every purpose, sounds is excellent with deep bass although you can hear a few squeeks at max, but hey who wants to listen at max w/out damaging your eardrums.Titling can be done at ease, it just takes a few minutes to practice, long battery life youll have all the fun recording and editing. It has all the necessary accesories for recording with the optical cable youll have cd quality music, the strap and pouch for travelling, what more can you ask for? But the headphones just missed it. Over all a great buy, definitely youll be satisfied, itll blow the competition! On: 2000-03-16
I just got the 821, and it is the best gadget I have ever bought. It is so much better than a mp3 player because the sound quality is better and each minidisc is about $2.00 to $5.00, for 74 min. A memory card for 32MB is at least $50. Once you know how to use the 821 its so easy. With a digital output the sound quality is AWESOME! And it does not skip at all. If i kept on going about everything that is good about the 821, I would never stop. This Minidisc player/recorder is AWESOME, thank you Amazon.com On: 2000-03-15

Ive had this md player/recorder for about a year and it has been a great product. It is very small and light, I dont think it makes that much difference between this and the new more expensive models. This md player still has the most recent and best sounding atrac as well (atrac is what records and compresses your sound) I can barely tell the difference between cd and this md, only when I go at a high volume with high bass that you start to hear distortion. It comes with everything you need except blank MDs. I record from my JVC fs-7000 with the digital output from my cds, and my output on my soundcard for analog recording mp3, which also sounds very good. I would recommend this product to anyone that thinks cds are too big, damage too easily, and arent customizable. The price is a bit steep (I got mine for 300 a year ago) and you can also check out sharps new md recorder (md-831) which is a bit smaller, and has a couple new features but is also more expensive. The backlit remote is also very handy in the dark. The only setback I think of this is the headphones. If you buy this package, its a good idea to buy another pair of nice headphones like Koss SportaPros or Sony mdr-888. Hope this helps! On: 2000-02-27
I have the sony MZR-55, MZR- 50, and MZR-90/91 and they do not even compare to this product. All the other MDs have Low quality recordings and low battery power. This product can get about 13-15 hours per charged battery. This product blows away all those $400 MD player/recordersSharp just recently came out with MDMT-831 which you may want to check out. this product is basically the same size as the Sonys smallest md player/recorder, but with much more advantages... First off, Sony always fails to mention that their product is only 16 bit ATRAC, where as the Sharps is 24 bit. What this simply means is that this product has better sound quality (especially in the mega bass). Also, the Sonys products run not on Lithium-Ion rechargable batteries, which the Sharp does. this means a much longer battery life (Sharp goes about 12 hours with the rechargable battery alone -->Sonys goes about 5 hours). To sum it all up, Sony should be given credit for introducing MD to the world, but they have lost on the competition to many other companies. On: 2000-01-21

I bought the MD-MT821 for my 14 year old son for Christmas. We have about come to blows, fighting over who is going to use this machine next! We both enjoy it very much. I did quite a bit of research into MP3 and Mini Disks before buying this unit 3 days before christmas on Amazon. It arrived Christmas eve as promised. The size compares to Sonys smallest player and is $50 less. The buttons on the front of the player are shaped different for each function. This makes it really easy to figure out which ones to use with less mistakes. Take a couple of hours reading the manual and playing with the machine and you will have it mastered. I like the solid feel of the deck when opening and closing and the disk carrier in the lid. It would be nice if the display on the unit was backlit. The plug in remote functions only for playback and does not record. It is backlit and very easy to use. It would be nice to have an equalizer but the three base levels are more than adequate. Analog recordings are very good, but recording using the digital optical cable just blows you away. You will be very happy with this unit. I couldnt find any other manufacturer that offered the same combination of features and price. No wonder they are hard to get. If you can find one, youll be a "happy camper". On: 2000-01-13
Decided to get into Minidiscs and bought this one because honestly, it looked pretty spiffy. Amazon shipped it out and I got it pretty quick and immediately began to play and record with it. Definately easy to use with excellent features that just make this player worth it. The price is resonable for a minidisc player/recorder and this one is definately worth the price. On: 2000-01-12

I shopped around for various high end MDs and this one is the best. The features alone make it worth the buy. It also performs as a player with analog & digital ports. Only complain for Sharp is their inferior headphones, but even with this flaw its still out ranks all other. On: 1999-12-10

I purchased a Sony R55 a few months ago and returned it after a couple weeks. This unit blows the Sony away! The R55 had many shortcomings, but its most obvious was its poor battery life which yields around 3.5 hours of playback. The Sharp will give you about 11-12 hours! The other most noticeable thing was the sound quality, another area where the Sony fails in comparison. I find the drums a bit tinny with the Sony unit. I have found that the Sharps ATRAC captures the sound much closer to the original. The recording features of this unit are also fantastic! If you are interested in MD, this is the way to start! by: Anonymous On: 1999-07-26
I chose to purchase this Sharp. The Aiwa unit has a backlit display on the unit in addition the remote. The battery life on this unit exceeds most others, save the new Sony due out in Oct., 1999. Overall, this unit is well worth the price -if you are getting into Minidisc recording in the field, this is the unit to get. by: Anonymous On: 1999-07-22
This is a nice little machine. The sound quality is above average but if you splash out on some good headphones then you will realise that it is not the best. It is a good size and it has all the functions of any other recorder. On: 1999-07-21

This has the best sound of any portable out there, and kills most decks to! If your just getting into MD u need this! The sharps sound and battery life cant be beat. This unit is awsome! by: Anonymous On: 1999-07-16
An excellent choice if youre just starting to record and listen to minidiscs because of its simplicity. However, more veteran users will be pleased because of its tiny size and low weight. Overall, this is an excellent bargain. On: 1999-07-15

A great MD portable recorder. Definitely the best portable minidisc recorder available in the USA. Long battery life, small size, what is arguably the best sound quality for any MD portable recorder, superior recording features, and an pretty good remote control set this unit apart from the pack. If youre debating getting into MD (minidisc), there are few better ways to start.
