More Information

Great Unit!!     On: 2003-01-30

Ive had this unit for around 2 years now, and its been the best portable music device Ive ever had.

For starters MD quality is quite good, while this is a portable recorder, the quality isnt as high as would be with full size decks, but it still compares well.

By the new standards (03) this unit is LARGE, when I bought it, it was rather reasonable. However the scroll dial is its best feature. Like the Apple iPod, you can easly scroll through the music on the disc. The dial also makes naming tracks much easier.

Apparently this unit is no longer available. But I would highly reccomend any MiniDisc unit. With newer MP3 players available, the MD is becomming sort of outdated for a person who wants to carry around their whole music collection. Ive used this unit for many live sound applications (theater shows, recording) and MiniDisc is a highly advisable format for these purposes.
Also if you are constantly making new mixes of music, (like cheerleadrs, DJs, etc.) the MD format allows you to re-write easly. (No need to start a CD coaster collection)
Recording quality isnt stealar, but its not bad for a portable. Last advice, Id stay away from the MDLP format, its 5 hours (300 minutes) on the same size disc as the 74 minute units. (more music, same data space = more compression=lower quality)

crummy track record
by: Anonymous    On: 2002-10-18

I started out pleased with the Sharp MD player. I found it easy to use and edit the discs. I used it for recording live music, interviews, MP3, old vinyl records. But, unfortunately in two years mine has broken twice. It no longer records, and it is getting kind of touchy about ejecting the discs. More work on the design of this thing needs to be done. Its not a durable piece of equipment.
Great product, but...     On: 2002-03-10

Ive had my MD player for about 2 and a half years. It has been mostly reliable throughout these years. The remote clip broke off about 6 months ago, which is no big deal, and the jog dial has been working on and off for the past year. Two unnecessary but very helpful functions. Recently, I went to switch discs, and it would not come out. The front part seems to be caved in. I am going to try to fix it, but Im not sure if I can. Ive used it quite a bit, and I have been extremely happy with it. However, it is quite large and is kind of annoying to record from the internet and anywhere else. I suggest this product if you do not mind the heavier and bigger player, but other wise its great. I would maybe suggest a newer MDLP recorder that can record much more onto a disc. Good luck!
all the problems

i have this product and it was the most worthless thing i have bought the remote cracked while i was out at the boat and it also wouldnt record after the fist year . not the best produst but it has a great look
MOST WANT TO HEAR ONLY PLESeaNT REviews BUT im HONEST

I have had this mini disc player for ... oh.. 4 months. It was really great the first 2 weeks. Everyone likes its the first couple weeks. BUt, like most people say, for ... it is to big, lumbersome, and not that convienent. The dial is easily moved accidently, inorder to record a song, you have to play the entire song. UNliKE ! the sony mini disc, it is big and cant compress files. THe sony can compress files and make the mini disc hold up to 80 songs!!! while the sharp holds 15. Im not saying this isnt a good mini disc, im saying that for the price, look around to see what else you can get that is smaller, lighter, and more functtions. I mean this mp3 player is bigger and heavier than my hold cs player!
Minidisk Player

First of all this is just a plain great md player/recorder. I have owned this md for about a year and it hasnt got banged up yet it has a few small scratches but thats it. Here are some of the good points
-you can name the songs and have them show on the display
-comes with a handy remote with lcd and backlight display with easy to use buttons
-jog dial for easy use while naming tracks
-can get really really loud so that you can hear it through the headphones
-really small
-battery last around 10 hours and takes around 2 hours to charge
-battery slides in easily and has a nice sturdy cover over it that cant break off
-comes with headphones
-recording is easy
-mds slide in nice and easy
-buttons are big and easy to push
here are some of the bad points
-it doesnt come with hook up cables to the computer and I dont think it can
-thats pretty much it
hope you buy it!!!!
Talk about durable     On: 2001-07-21

I have owned this unit for 2 years, and it has held up pretty well. I had heard some complaints that the slot loads tend to break, but this was never the case with the 722. The jog dial has gotten banged up, so I cant title tracks as quickly, but that is of little concern, since it still plays extremely well. I will say, though, that in the time that I have owned the 722, I have gone through two discmans, so this little puppy has been worth its price.

Its a great MD player/recorder to start with, and hopefully stick with. Just find a male-male analog cable and youre set.

worth every cent I spent     On: 2001-07-12

Good things about this machine

-Slot loading mechanism, very convenient and sturdy. I opted for this older model just for this slot. I consider this a luxury, or liability if I dont have one.

-Jog dial is really powerful. Im lazy to do the titling with anything besides keyboard. And it also makes it easy for the editing.

-3 levels of Bass. And the sound quality is great. The volume is adequate if you record the disk right. Actually it can blow your ears at maximum volume. I heard from my friends who use Sonys that older models from Sonys doesnt have enough volume for noisy environment.

-The unit shell is made of metal.

-The remote control looks cheap but it works and comes with EL backlight.

-The size is right for me. I did fear the unit will be big as I read so many complaints about it.

I write this review in hope that it will find its way to Sharp and tell them "The slot loading is the way to go!".

Greatest Gadget I've bought in years     On: 2001-07-09

Sharp MS-722 Should be the ONLY MD PLAYER OUT THERE. I had this Incredible machine for a year, it was stolen and I searched hard and long to find and buy it AGAIN! Simple, Great Sound, Great Design without opening door that can break! This minidisc player/recorder is the One to buy, great price, great product, very convenient Jog Dial, Remote Control, and other great bonuses. Everything you Need to use the machine IS INCLUDED! Great Product!
It's all good once you have the parts
by: Anonymous    On: 2001-01-14

This product is pretty good. I got it just in time during the Christmas rush. When it finally came, i saw that i couldnt record anything without from my computer, Cd player and Boom boxes. Until later that day I saw that I had to use this old cable I had, which are only 5 bucks. The cable is for those of you who have problems with this; for anybody that uses a pair of haedphones or ear-bugs, you know the little metal that sticks out to put into the Cd player, Etc. Well the cable is like that on both ends.

Other then that one problem to get music in, it plays very well and almost never skips, with the exception of low battery. I have put it in my pants pockets and ran with it. Lots of shaking and not a skip. The slick battery is sick and only needs to be recharged about once a week, even with daily use. 30 minute walk from school and back up steep steep hills.

The remote it has is super and lets you go on lokking and feeling less clumsy. As when you put it away you just put the tiny remote and turn it off.

The headphones it comes with very good and up turned up all the way, everyone in the room can hear you.

This is a good thing to have if you are very into music. Other then that you probably wouldnt us it much anyway.

Too Big     On: 2000-12-29

Its a great sounding, great working mini disk player, but get ready, its a big one, the largest I have seen yet. Sturdy though and works well just bigger than average.
great product
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-12-25

I bought one of these off ebay a while back. Ive had it for almost a year now and its worked great. I dont care for the remote much I think thats a silly idea and not very useful. Its also very tough, ive dropped hard enough to get dents and it still works. It had a glitch reading an MD one time, but i havent been able to get it to repeat. Ive gotten in a wreck with this thing and it didnt even skip. The sound reproduction is.. well, what youd expect from any minidisc player, awesome. The batteries last a long time, ive take it on long trips and never had them run out on me. Ive gone weeks without recharging it. The jog dial is sooo useful.

The thing i like best about it though is the expressions on peopels faces when they see it. Its a very novel design, very different and interesting. Ive been very happy with mine.

Great player     On: 2000-12-17

great player. only drawbacks are its size, not as small as more expensive ones, and that it doesnt have a USB link for downloading MP3s, you have to attatch it to a easy to find 2 way analog cable.plus the directions are a bit sketchy, have to just use some logic. but besides those minor faults this item is a great buy for people who enjoy listing to their own mixes. or for people who just want to show off.
722 Sounds Amazing     On: 2000-12-16

A few months ago I realized just how tired of my tapes I was. There were several gross inconviences: bulkiness, the breaking tapes and cases... but most of all the warping of the the sound caused by random tape misalignment. The sequential rewinding and fast forwarding was getting old fast. I didnt want a CD player, because I didnt want to have to buy an expensive CD burner to compile my own music, and CDs are larger and even more fragile than cassette tapes.

One day a friend told me about MiniDisc. He shared with me for a moment the compact convenience and the rich, articulate sound the MD media had to offer. MDs are cheap, fully rewritable and dense enough to withstand high levels of shock. The MiniDisc is a 7x7cm piece of digital media to be reckoned with. I can attest to its durablity: I have done many a stupid thing with a MiniDisc, but none have broken or malfunctioned. Virtually invulnerable to the effects of dust, shock, and moisture, about the only way to destroy a MiniDisc is to unlock the dunce-proof shutter and grind the black and silver disc with a favorite kitchen utensil or two. And the aural fidelity is dead on. The MD sounds fantastic.

About the only downside to MDs is the price/availability of MD players. Sharps incredible 722 portable player/recorder eliminates this problem. The price on the baby is dropping every day, and it still remains one of the best player/recorders on the market. The 722s dimensions are posted at this site, but for visualization purposes its about 2/3 the size of a Color GameBoy, and it has a footprint about 2/3 smaller than a CD. Recording is a snap, and the 722s intuitive interface makes is all too easy to name, combine, splice, dice and make musical curly fries with your own MD tracks.

My 722 has never skipped-ever. I dont do stupid things with my beloved 722, but accidents do happen. Its flashy, silver, metal and composite chassis has been prepared for every trip, thump and bang ever to cross its path. The 722 is slot-loading (like CD or cassette player in a car), and doesnt give the hassle of the easily-broken, hinged doors of CD and cassette players. The rechargeable battery lasts for several hours, and becomes fully charged in minutes. The 722 comes with accessories galore, including a nifty sack capable of holding the unit, remote, and a few MDs comfortably in a pocket. Unfortunately the package does not include a headphone-to-mic recording plug, but these are dirt cheap, and readily available at any neighborhood Radio Shack. The backlit remote control allows the user to control the action while the unit is in a pocket or a backpack. The "hold" switches allow one to lock the interface so buttons are not accidentally pressed while the unit is packed away. The 722 has enough modes and features to keep any gadget freak giggling for months, but the listening experience is its main attraction. In three simple words, 722 sounds amazing. With the right pair of headphones (the included pair is quite satisfactory-and can double as a mic for the thrift seekers and Bond fans out there) the unit becomes a portable live concert-rave even. The compactness, durability and skipless technology offered by the 722 give the listener the liberty to do what traditional portable audio systems couldnt- the ability to dance, and enjoy your music without feeling confined or weighted down. The engineers at Sharp have outdone themselves with this great product. This is one to keep for years.

DO NOT BUY THIS!     On: 2000-12-15

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. I have had my 722 for about 6 months when I got the UTOC error. This error is ussually fatal. It means that the lens will not read the disc. I went to get it repaired and i cauld not find a place that would fix it. It turns out that Sharp made a bad batch of minidisc players and will not admit it. Beyond that it is way to heavy and way to big. Also about a month after I had it the jog dile broke. I ended buying the sony r90 and it is great. So do not buy the 722.

p.s. sarry about the mispelled words. I can not spell

A little big, but a great buy!     On: 2000-12-11

The 722 has everything a minidisc player/recorder should have. Optical in (cable included), manual recording levels that can be adjusted during recording, a nice little backlit remote, a sweet jog dial that makes titling a snap, a rechargable battery, and all the trimmings. Most importantly though, the 722 sounds INCREDIBLE! The sound this unit puts out is very clear, and the 3-mode bass system will not leave you disappointed. It is also very easy to operate. All the controls are right on the front plate and are big enough to actually be able to press. The remote has all the functions that the actual unit does, except for titling and monitoring of the record levels. As noted in the title of this review, my only concern (and it is a minor one), is that the 722 is slightly bulky compared to its smaller 821, 831, and 66 brothers. But this is not a big deal - the positives definitely outweigh the one negative. Buy the 722!
more than great     On: 2000-10-27

Wow...im impressed, I cant believe I get this piece of equipment for so small price.

One of the cool features of the minidisc is the support for a rechargeable battery (it takes only 3 hours to recharge) the jog dial, the remote control and the weight.

I record MP3 from my computer to the minidisc, they sound great, its a better and a lot cheaper way of taking your mp3 songs with you.

By the way, If you have a digital output on the computer or in your cd player the cable is included.

great value     On: 2000-10-19

I bought the Sharp MD-MS722 for recording my dj mixes, but use it for all of my audio recording. Making a recording is very easy, and the buttons are easy to press. While some higher models have the auto-level, which sets the recording level to the correct setting even if the input changes this model does not have one. I would perfer the auto-level control, but from my experience adjusting the level manual is sometimes easier (in a dj mixing enviroment as a example). Another great feature is the "jog-dial" which makes typeing out a MiniDisc name very fast, and easy. While this is my first MiniDisc recorder, I have no complants and find this format will be my choice for all recordings, analog or digital.

As a note to record your cd, just record with the "sync" option on. This will start, stop recording and even change tracks to match the cd. Some cds will have problems, like a mix cd that has no end to each of the tracks. Another nice feature is the digital in, when recording from a digital source (DVD, CD player) you can get very clear sound, and easy recording set-up.

The only problem I find with this recorder is, 1- the lack of a backlit screen on the main player(it does have a backlit remote). Its not a major problem, just nice to see more details than the remote shows while in a dark room. Something to point out is that this recorder uses a "slot" ejecting style or the common "clam-shell" design. Some people like this, and some dont. Personally I like the slot style more since it give the recorder a less fragile feel. Overall the recorder is very well built, using metal for the main body and after playing MiniDiscs I doubt I will go to tapes or cd for my personal listening.

If you dont have a home recorder, or need to make some high quality recording try this recorder. One last thing to remember is that after making a recording, you must not move the recorder while it is making the "TOC" table or contents file. This will cause you to get a bad recording.

First Time Minidisc User Loves this Thing!     On: 2000-10-19

I had never owned a minidisc player before, however I wanted a skip-proof device to run with. After hemming and hawing, I ordered this thing. I have been absolutely delighted. The player has NEVER skipped on me, even though I have run with it for dozens of miles. The jog dial makes titleing quick and easy. The build quality of the unit is good, and the unit is aesthetically pleasing. There are smaller units, but I have not found the size to be any problem. It fits easily in a suit coat pocket without weighing down the jacket.

For those of you who have never used minidiscs, they really are an outstanding medium. They are small, durable, easy to record on, and best of all, cheap. At 1.50 a disk, one can record dozens of their favorite CDs and carry them everywhere. I have gotten annoyed with all the scratches accumulating on my CDs, esp. rare ones. With minidiscs to use when travelling, my CDs stay safely at home now...

Nothing bad to say. This is a fantastic product.

Possibly the best value for a MiniDisc Player     On: 2000-10-18

This MiniDisc Player has almost everything. It is almost everything youd want from a high end MiniDisc at a cheaper price. However, there are a couple of things that keep it from receiving a full five stars (which I really think it deserves) from a technical standpoint: It is a little thick, which does not bother me at all, but compared to others, this is a problem. It is a relatively old model (but is still worth the money that I paid - and it is now even cheaper). It doesnt have a PC link cable that some sonys have and even a Sharp model has. (Though an analogue connection can be made using the "sound-out" from the sound card and two cables like the one it brings - most portable cd players bring one so many of you probably already have the other neccesary one). It brings a digital cable. However, the type it includes does not allow from one MD to another. The battery is great but it would be useful if, like some of the other MDs, this model had the abiliity to play off of just AA bateries (yet, since it has a rechargable battery, whod want AA batteries - and it does include a battery case to extend battery life) Unlike some newer models, the only "indiglo" LCD is the remote control. It would be cool if the main LCD could have this feature. Overall, this MD is worth the money. It works and looks better than MANY of the newer and more expensive MDs. If you would like a high quality, relatively inexpensive, portable MiniDisc player/recorder, that looks great, this is for you. Though no current MiniDisc player/recorder has all of the features discussed, it is hard to make this a 5 star player when Sharp could easily one day announce a new model containing them.
Yet another great function     On: 2000-10-16

This is yet another great function on the Minidisc player. The headphones that come with the player double as a microphone when you talk into the speakers. All you need to do is plug the jack into the red recording jack and press record. What will they think up next?
Blows Away the Compition, Buy It Now!     On: 2000-10-13

The Sharp MS 722 is the best portable audio produc for the price on the market today. Period. I am very familiar with portable audio product so I know what Im talking about. Ive owned a Rio PMP 300 MP3 player, a Nomad 64 MB MP3 player, a Sony RZ70 minidisk recorder. Ive sold them all for about what I paid for them. The Rio, having only 32 MB was worthless, I could only fit 8 songs at CD quality! The Nomad was better, with 64 MB, but after I went on vacation to Tennessee, I think Ill scream if I hear one of the 18 songs I had on it again. The Sony had the advantage of minidisk storage. but the sound quality was really lacking with its ear bud headphones, no Bass to it. After doing a lot of research I decided to go with the Sharp MS 722. I am very impressed. The controls are very easy to use and the sound quality is beyond description with words. Most portable audio players sound bad when you hook the up to anything but headphones. The Sharp will blast through my Alpine car stereo at full blast with amazing quality. the unit looks really cool, Ive gotten a lot of compliments on it.

Pros: Best sound qualit...easy to use controls Very customizable, turn antiskip and button beep on/off Very durable, im convinced its indestructable Looks cool

Cons: Doesnt include cable to hook up to most sound cards and Portable CD player Doesnt come with any minidisks (I was a little disapointed when the package arrived)

All in all, Like Ive said, I know what Im talking about and you are not going to find a better minidisk player.

Not bad, but not excellent
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-10-08

Reasons to buy: -supplied cable does indeed work with my cd player & computer -once you get the hang of it, you work like a pro[ease of use] -if you have mp3s on your computer you want to listen to -if you want to copy cds -has many cool editing features [combine, divide, erase, etc.] -"jog dial" makes naming songs extremely easy -looks awesome -extra minidisks are like 2 bucks each Reasons not to buy: -although the cable hooks up to my computer, sound quality is extremely poor when turned up loud [copying cd sound quality is good, though -takes a while to figure out how to use it -when recording tracks sometimes split -when recording mp3s sound volume at max is low
What about my old LPs !     On: 2000-10-07

I needed and option to transfer my old LPs to a CD format. Those rare LPs that even in Amazon you cannot find them on CDs. So I was looking for alternatives:

1- A CDR for home stereos ( To expensive and I already have one in my PC) 2- Hook my PC to the Stereo ( UH NO! the stereo is in the leaving room and my PC is upstairs in the TV Room, too much effort! ) 3- Or a Portable MD Player that can hook to my Stereo and PC with no effort.

Also I want to take on the road my big collection of MP3s with convenient and a huge storage space. Not just one or two hours of music like the majority of the new portable mp3 players.

So I bought the Sharp MD Player for this reasons:

1- I can analog record my LPs to the MD player with no effort and then connect the MD player to my PC and record then to CDs in my PC CDR ( sound a little difficult but trust me is easy,...You will need and extra cable and some software)

2- It is a bargain at this price and have a lot of really cool features. The remote with the little screen is a plus!

3- ...the MDs are the best way to take on the road your collection of MP3s, period.

So I solved all my problems... incredible!

Thanks Sharp and Amazon, I am really pleased.

So much fun!     On: 2000-10-03

The well-written instruction booklet for the Sharp MD-MS722 cautions "do not expose to extreme heat" or "dust", so of course the first thing I did was take my newfound toy to the Nevada desert for a week, where I ran around and rode my bike all day, every day (the Sharp MD-MS722 never once skipped, no matter the jostling I put it through). And let me tell you, while I cant recommend threatening a Minidisc player with desert conditions, I had a great time with this beautiful little machine. You can record your own mix of songs really easily, then shuffle up their order however you like, or erase tracks--wherever they may be on a disc--and add new ones! Its small enough that you can hold the whole thing in your palm while you run, if you want. There are also "hold" buttons on the remote and on the minidisc player themselves, so you can place the unit in a fanny pack or backpack and not worry about the controls being accidentally pressed at whichever end.

Its true theres no belt clip, but I personally dont like to put a precious object at the mercy of a 10-cent piece of plastic. (Overconfidence in a belt clip has actually cost me money in the past).

Be prepared for some admiring glances with this one...

Outstanding piece of equipment     On: 2000-10-03

Outstanding peice of equipment. The reviews on the internet do not even come close to the performance level that I expected on the Sharp MD-MS722. The options that are given to you on this minidisc player go above and beyond the call of duty. I never thought that I would be so impressed with something so simple. The main advantage to me is how you can erase individual or all the tracks on the minidisc and start over fresh as many times as you want, not like burning a CD. It is so light and easy to carry from class to class that anyone can enjoy. I recommend this minidisc player and I give it a full five stars.
Great Recorder     On: 2000-10-01

This is the first MD recorder that I have gotten, and I love it. VERY easy to use, and I though, very intuitive. You do need extra cables to record from certin non-digital sources, but I had all those, and making the connections where very easy. If you are new, and want to get a great recorder at a great price, I definatly recommend this one.

MD-MS722     On: 2000-09-19

This is a really good minidisc recorder/player. It is very easy to use and has awesome Bass. It is expensive compared to portable CD players but it is a million times better. It is smaller, lighter and much easier to carry all of your favorite songs. With a portable CD player you need to carry the player and your collection of CDs. With the MD-MS722 you just carry the small player and two or three minidiscs. I only give this MiniDisc player 4 stars because it comes with cables that you cannot hook up to many music sources. I had to buy an additional cable. But still, this MD is awesome.
ACTUAL CONVERASTION EXCERPT     On: 2000-09-19

this is an excerpt from an acutal conversation i had with my friend. the names have been changed to protect the innocent. heres how it went:

Myka02: yeah, so i mean...it aint that bad. but oh yeah, i bought a mini disc player (its awesome, even better than a cd burner) Irgr783: do you recommend me buying one? Myka02: a mini disc player? Irgr783: yeah. Irgr783: cause i got a burner. Irgr783: would it be overkill? Myka02: yeah man its sweet, re-record over and over, really small, really light, not too expensive, download from radio, computer, another cd, a tape, whatever you can find that puts out sound, it even has a mic jack to record your own voice or class lectures. Myka02: its amazing. Irgr783: woooooow! Myka02: i know. it rocks!

Recording from the Internet     On: 2000-09-18

I wrote another review about a year ago on this product but I just wanted everyone to know (if they didnt already) that you can record mp3s to your minidisc player easily. All you need to do is but a cable from RadioShack (about 4 bucks). It has a jack at either end to go in your minidisc player and computer. When you get it home, plug one end into the line out end of your minidisc player and the other end into the speaker jack on your tower. You might want to turn the volume up before recording. Press record, start the song, and see if it is loud enough. Adjust the volume settings as you like, press play, and youre off! Its that simple. I hope this helps in you future purchases that you will not invest in an Mp3 player because of this great function on all minidisc players.

Peace Out, Sam

As Sharp as it gets     On: 2000-09-13

Hmmm...where to begin. This product surpassed all my initial expectations...I opted for the MS722 over a Sony minidisc player/recorder mainly because of price difference - for crying out loud Sony, Im not made of money! There was over a $100 difference between comparable models of the two manufacturers. But back to the review - the player is very durable and the 40 second skip memory truly works - I accidentally dropped it the other day onto a hard tile floor in my universitys business school computer lab and it literally did not miss a beat. Recording is very easy - I plugged the optical cord into the minidisc and my DVD player and recorded from CD to MD in no time flat. It isnt as fast as say, burning a CD to make an MP3. It records just like a tape - you must play the song in its entirety to get it onto the MD. No problem, though - its fun to listen to your music as you do it. Not satisfied with the order you recorded in? No problem. You can move, combine, or erase tracks on your MD anytime anywhere. This is a marvelous product. Only drawback is that is only comes with a hand strap (for carrying purposes and a pouch for storing/travelling purposes) and not a belt clip or something similar to let you go about your day with two free hands. Its also a tad larger than the Sony players but, so what. You get your moneys worth - I promise. Buy it now!
Man!! five stars doesn't rate it!!     On: 2000-09-12

I have to say that I had some doubts in buying this MD due to the fact that through the internet you can find some guys with some problems. But lets say that theyre 1 in a billion. I received this product in Chile (southamerica) and the first time I used it, was for what I bought it for: to play background tracks with amplification in a church. The sound was a supreme ear-cherish.

I work with a group of young people who share the love of Jesus using the music. The Sharp even has been used to play the backgrounds when we go to visit a person in a hospital, with a little portable stereo, it makes miracles!

I strongly recomend this device. Now more than ever at US$ 180 it is a gift!! I bought it when it was a US$ 200 thing... but Im not disapointed anyway.

God Bless you all.

Longo

Wow! So easy to use and hip looking!     On: 2000-09-09

I shopped around for MD player for the longest time, but for the price and quality this one is the BEST! I just got mine 3 days ago. And since then ive had so much fun using it! I have so many mp3s on my computer at work, but never was able to take them along with me. So now came a solution. I got to make my own music with this miracle Mini Disc player! Note to people that want to connect it to a PC - though the instruction booklet is full of every description you can imagine, it dont say anything about connecting the MD player to your computer. that was the only drawback. Get a regular audio cable, or im sure you have it (the one that connects your speakers to a comp. is fine) and connect it to MD player, then start playing your MP3s, hit record, and you are on your way! That was easy, but it took me 30 min, to figure it out (duh) Overall, a very nice design, good quality earphones, and great little remote that lites with a cool blue color!
concerned about sound quality rather than size?
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-09-08

my biggest concern was recording without the optical output. i dont have an optical output on my soundcard or stereo so i was extremely hesitant when buying the md player. also, im pretty obsessed with music so im extremely picky about sound quality. when i got this sharp md player it had no recording problems at all. the quality is extremely good; in fact youd have to be a dog in order to hear any high frequencies or distortions cuz i cant hear any. so if youre concerned about recording without the optical output, its not going to be a problem.

the only bad thing about not having the optical output is the track marking. with analog recording, the md player requires like 2 or 3 seconds of silence to recognize the next track. so if youre recording something with continuous music flowing into the next track, the md player will think its one track. but this isnt a problem cuz there are editing features on the player to split the track into two. in fact there are many editing features that make the player extremely versatile.

also i find the remote kind of awkward to use. there are these slide switches. youd think sliding the switch to the right would make the track go forward, but instead it goes back. i guess it just takes time to get used to. also the headphones suck and an analog recording cable doesnt come with the player. but thats only like 3 or 4 bucks at the electronics store.

all i ever hear about is that the player is too chunky or heavy. what ever happened to the music?

Simply amazing sound     On: 2000-09-03

Like most people, the minidisc was a distant memory in my mind, stored away with the likes of Crystal Pepsi and the McDLT. However, while looking for a way to move my MP3s to a portable device, I stumbled across the Sharp 722. Reluctantly, I purchased it, and in a word, its incredible.

Im not an audiophile by any sense of the imagination. But to my ears, the 722 makes incredibly high quality copies of any music source. I found it easy to attach the recorder to my computer and move MP3 files to MD. Granted, this isnt as fast as a Rio, or Nomad... 74 minutes of MP3s take 74 minutes to move to MD. However, the time difference is more than made up in the ability to switch mixes instantly.

Although prices are falling, flash memory is still prohibitively expensive for most people. However, with three dollars worth of MDs, you can record more than two hours of digital quality music, plus some. Thats the more than double the maximum capacity of most similarly priced portable MP3 units. And recording couldnt be easier. All you do it turn on the external source, sit back and relax. The 722 does most of the work, including dividing tracks. Then, you are free to name and edit tracks, which is made much easier thanks to the jog ring on top of the unit. Essentially, the MD is like a super-high quality cassette tape for the 21st century. It gives you all the convenience and audio quality of CDs, with the customizable of tape.

With all the included features taken into consideration, Id say the Sharp 722 is the biggest value in portable audio out there today. Compare it with many of Sonys units, and youll find its more feature packed, more user friendly, more durable, and much more economical. I would highly recommend this unit for anyone looking for a high quality music solution.

Best buy

The sonys are smaller, but thats the only thing they win. Sharp MD-722 is the best player/recorder you can buy for a fair price!
Say yes to MD, no to MP3
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-08-29

Give me one good reason to buy an MP3 player. They are expensive, can held just a couple of songs compared to MD, and you need a computer to change the music you have on it. What can you do if you go travelling for a week. Listen to the same two hours of music?

The Sharp 722 is great. I started to look for an MP3 player but thank god found the MDs on the way. They are cheaper, you can carry all the music you want, and blanks are very cheap. I got the memorex 20 pack for 30 dollars, that will be more than 20 hours of music. How much would it cost to get 20 hours of MP3 music.

Go for the MD with your eyes closed, you would never regret. And if you decide to go for the MD, go for this Sharp, it is really cool, very, very portable and the most affordable, just a few good reasons to buy this one instead of a Sony.

Really fun.     On: 2000-08-28

I was a little hesitant to buy a minidisc player, because I already have CDs, and portable CD players are cheaper. However I really enjoy this product. First, its much more portable than a CD player, it easily fits in my pocket along with my wallet and keys. The discs are tiny and easy to take along as well, and are conveniently stored in cases, so you dont have to worry about them scratching. Secondly, recording features are really cool. The digital/optical line results in near perfect copying of CDs. Ive also used a small clip-mike to bootleg concerts (with the artists permission!), and as long as the sensitivity is turned all the way down, to compensate for the loud noise, the quality is excellent. 2 1/2 hours of mono recording is pretty cool, too.

The other product this competes against is MP3 players. I think Minidisc is better suited for most people, because to listen to different songs you can just put in a new minidisc, you dont have to be near your computer and download new songs. As portable products are made for people on the go, this makes more sense. And of course its still possible to record your MP3s to minidisc, it just takes more time.

I think the Sharp 722 is the best Minidisc in the price range because of the lengthy battery life and the small, squarish shape. The remote can be useful, and the jogwheel makes functions such as adding and deleting tracks intuitive. It comes with a digital cable, which is a must-buy for other recorders that dont come with one.

Good quality - Low Power     On: 2000-08-27

This is a vary good player/recorder. Only one problem though, the included rechargable battery lasts only 65% of the time stated in the manual.(5 Hrs instead of 8 Hrs of playback ) If I didnt have this problem, it was perfect 4 me.
Very Heavy
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-08-22

I got this mini disc player and it was extremely heavy! go with on that is a little lighter. I would walk along the street and it would sag in my pocket.
Quality Speaks For Itself!
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-08-16

I got this MIni DIsc player about 3 months ago, and i take it everyehre i Go. YOu could say im a pretty heavier user of it, and its still going strong. controls are easy to use, sound quality is the best, it looks dope, and the remote helps alot! It was the smartest purchase ive made all year. It was totaly worth the money, and the price now is lower then when i bought it so i would take advantage of it. It hasnt failed me yet and those mini discs g\\hold alot.
Professional use     On: 2000-08-15

I have used the MD-MS 722 since December of 1999 in my role as a reporter/anchor at Clear Channel Radio in Wyoming. It is a marvelous piece of equipment that has been reliable whether recording city council meetings, doing interviews or even scrambling after firefighters in the Wyoming mountains. It fits in my front left pants pocket and the only thing that would make it better for me would be to have a built in...professional quality...microphone. I am an "old guy" and I love the digital quality and convenience. Its an A+ for professional applications. Plus 149 minutes on a disc in mono is to die for! The lithium ion rechargable battery is wonderful...with a long recording life and a quick recharge when its only partly discharged.
EXCELLENT-THE MOST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-08-15

I recommend this MD player/recorder for all audio fans, since its the best for its relatively low price. I bought it about a month ago at $199.99, and at the current price of $179.99, its a bargain. Originally I was not sure if buying the Sharp or the Sony rz70 which is the equivalent, but after trying both I relized that although a third thicker than the sony it has tons more options and comes with better gear. The remote control is great, which has a screen with cool blue backlight, instead the sonys controller is a piece of plastic with no screen. And the main difference is the price: the Sony costs $119.99, forty buck more than the Sharp. The only problem I have ever had is that once after about an hour of using the jog dial to name songs the jog dial stopped responding, but I turned it off and when I turned it back on a few hours later it was perfect, and it has never happened to me again. Although the controls are relatively simple, youll still need to read the manual, if not they will take some time to master. And the loaing macanism is a real plus, since it doesnt expose the fragile inner mecanisms and doesnt require opening or closing of the unit oitself, just pop it in and youre ready to go.
WOW!!!
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-08-13

I just got my MDMS-722 player/recorder and I absolutely love it. I had a whole cd recorded in about an hour.(10 minutes to Radio Shack to buy the cord that allows you to record from headphone jacks, and 45 minutes to record the whole cd.) I love the jog dial. It is so much easier to use than Sonys MZ-R70(which my friend has.) The three part bass is awesome. I think it is one of the best on the market right know. The headphones arent the best in the world, but they sound pretty good to me. Overall I think this would be a great buy for anyone who wants to save great amounts of money and have great music on the go!
Versatile little gizmo     On: 2000-08-10

I was looking around for a portable MD recorder/player to replace my old analog walkman and settled on the Sharp, and I havent regretted it. I love the slot-loading design and the battery life, while at times sporadic fills my needs. As a digital music enthusiast, I also own a DAT recorder and cd burner the MD fills in a hole in my collection. I can now record music digitally to DAT in the field, burn it to CD to listen to on my stereo, and then make a digital copy on MD to listen to on the road or working out, or just around town. The unit is nice and small, which makes it great when working out, or in the car. The sound is fine for my needs, yes, it does compress the audio, but im using the MD for high performance listening. The supplied headphones are decent, though nothing to write home about. The unit is easy to use, and you dont even really need the manual to figure it out. Ive done some field recording with the Sharp, and it handled it like a pro, all in all Id say this is one of the finest MD units on the market today, and that MD is one of the most promising formats on the market today, by all means, buy one. :)
Extremly Pleased
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-08-10

Thankyou amazon.com. I purchased this minidisc player recently and i must say that i am extremly pleased with its performance. I was surprised at the compact size for its vast features, but it proves to be very functional and easy to conceal. The controls are simple to use once you play around with it for a while and are quite useful in thier every aspect. I love the remote because it allows me to put the player in my backpack and operarte all its play functions without having to pull it out constantly.

I am also very pleased with the speedy delivery of my player, even by ups ground i got it in two days of ordering it. All in all i must say that this has to be one of the best, and most useful, value for money products that i have bought all year. If you are questioning the purchase, let me encorage you to consider this player seriously, it has brought me nothing but pleasure thus far.

well...     On: 2000-08-09

all in all the 722 is a great product and would have gotten five stars if not for a few minor details:

1:you can combine tracks but you cant divide them or undo you last edit

2:the cables that you get with it wont fullfill all of your needs the composite cable has scratchy sound while the digital opic cable had great sound but it couldnt connect to either of my computers or any stereos so you have to get yourself a third cable

3:other people said in their reviews that the directions were a little sketchy but they were only minutly bad

4:unless you dont have pockets you almost deffinitly wont use the hands strap but its just nice to have

5:when your first getting used to the remote controle you might want to put hold on unless your activley pushing buttons because the buttons are right where you would hold it

all aside its a great product and is worth the money

Nevermind MP3's!!! Buy THIS ONE!!!
by: wertraym    On: 2000-07-31

This is the perfect product for those of you looking for a portable recordable audio player but are shocked at the high prices and low memory size of MP3 players. With the new USB to digital optical products out on the market, it has become very easy to digitally transfer your MP3s to minidisc at a low-cost, without having to worry about a loss of quality. The Sharp also has a great analog sound as well.

Although I have graduated to the much higher cost Sony MD-90, this was my first, and to tell you the truth they perform almost as well.

The final reason fof purchasing this machine over an MP3 player is that for the price of 1 Sony MagicGate 64MB Memory Card (holding an hour of music), you can get 60 Multi-recordable Minidiscs (holding close to 70 hours of music) Need I say more?

Thought about an mp3 player, glad I got this instead     On: 2000-07-28

I was looking into a new music player and was thinking about anmp3 player. They are pretty popular in America right now and it made some sense, easy way to get music. But I decided I better play the field and look at all the options. The more I looked into it the more appealling the MD player became. It just made more sense than an mp3 player. The discs were only about a buck and a half (in bulk), which is considerably better than [the money] for a memory stick for any given mp3 player. Plus you could record mp3s just as easily on a MD player. But what clenched in for me was the fact that I didnt have to abandon my existing music library, infact I could condense it into MDs but still keep the very high quality of sound.

I am very glad I went with the MD player, it has been well worth it.

Handy controls, great sound, solid construction
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-07-28

Ive had this unit for about a month now and can find nothing bad to say about it. As noted in the other reviews, the controls are easy to use after a couple minutes spent with the manual. The remote is very handy- I carry the player in my backpack with the remote clipped to a strap where I can reach it. With the remote, you can change the volume, move between tracks, change bass setting, change play mode (random/repeat/normal) and power up/down. Its display tells you all you need to know. Use of the remote is optional, and both it and the main unit have "hold" switches to prevent accidental button presses.

As advertised, I get about 10 hours out of the internal battery. The external battery case is a great feature. You can attach it for six additional hours of play time. I use a NiMH cell (Eveready Accu) and get nearly as much time as an alkaline battery would give. Yes, the manual says dont use this type of battery but it works fine. Fewer Duracells going into the landfills is a good thing! Carry a spare AA cell, and you can get nearly 24 hours of play time away from a wall outlet.

One word about the sound- excellent. The included headphones arent bad, but youll probably want to use a better pair.

Solid Made in Japan construction.

I have very high expeectations when I buy an item, esp. through the internet. This item has done everything i had wanted it to do and expected it to, and then some. It is a great product and is pretty cheap too for a MD. so stop worrying about it and get it now. it was well worth the money. The only thing bad about it is the weight and size, but honestly, do you wanna spend another 100 dollars for the thing to way 2 onces less and be a 1/4 inch thinner? also if you get another model, plan to spend a half hour each Album Labling. With the MDMS722 I can lable a whole soundtrack in about 5 minutes quick.
Easy to Use
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-07-25

This minidisc player is very simple with a lot of easy to use functions. The two best things about it are the price and the jog dial. The jog dial made it simple and easy to name tracks. The price speaks for itself. There is only one problem. I needed to purchase a seperate digital cable to record onto a minidisc. The digital cable that is included only works on special stereos and cd players.

Once you go MD, you'll never go back!
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-07-21

I love my Minidisc recorder. The 722 is the best investment Ive ever, ever made. I drove from Austin, Texas to Deming, New Mexico and back without this baby skipping even once -- who can say that about a portable CD player? Im used to carrying a day and a halfs worth of music in my backpack -- MDs are that small! The editability features are pretty cool, too. If you have the money -- and dont care that the 722 already has everything you need -- buy the Sharp MT-821. But if you want a cheap, easy way to have all of your music with you in a compact, high-quality format, get the 722. Youll be glad you did.
Great Buy--- Much Better than MP3 players     On: 2000-07-17

I carefully researched all of the minidisc player/recorders under $200. After looking through all the possible player/recorders I chose the sharp 722 because of its great price and features. This player/recorder has all the features youll find on a higher priced minidisc. The 722, like all minidiscs, has the ability to play Mp3s easily from your computer. It also has a digital input for recording an optical which i found very useful. The only draw back is that its a little thicker than most MDs but not enough to make much of a difference. With great sound and a good price, this is one of the best player/recorders out there.
Great Product     On: 2000-07-16

This product had all the chi-chis i had wanted and expected, and more. It was worth the money, however it is large and heavy for a minidisk player/recorder. thanks
Bigger Than Great     On: 2000-07-15

I recently bought the sharp minidisc Player and it suprised me; greatly. It is great for recording Mp3s and songs off of Cds. But one thing about it is its sort of fat for a mini disc recorder. The rating fits perfectly because every thing else makes up for the thickness. It is also easy to take around instead of a Cd player. Mini discs gets damaged a lot harder than A cd because of the outside case. Tip: If you a Cd recorder and mess up the Cd by putting pauses or space in between. You can clean it up with the MD player. Best portable sound around!

The mdms722 is the greatest buy i have ever had. you can record off of almost anything. you can also record off your computer by going to radio shack and buying a simple wire for like 4 bucks. its amazingly easy to use, you dont even need to read the manual. it delivers great bass, and the quality is just as good as cd. if you were debating between a mp3 player and this, get this. you wont be sorry. the jog dial lets you name tracks easy. memory cards for mp3 cards might hold more than a minidisc, but they sure do cost a whole lot more. it has a rechargeable battery, so you dont need to keep on buying more batteries. I REALLY REALLY URGE YOU TO BUY THIS PRODUCT. IT SIMPLY IS GREAT.

Why would anyone want to buy an mp3 player? I almost did, and Im glad I didnt! I got the Sharp 722 and it is totally kool! This thing looks like a nuclear reactor, but not even that could make this baby skip. I droped this on the cement while I was walkin home from school and it didnt skip once! The sound is almost exactly the same as what you recorded it from, and Ive played in a band for 5 years, so I can really hear it. You can even hook the thing up to a mic, and make your bands ( or whatever) recordings!Ive already used it to record concerts from my school band! Sharp gives you everything you need! Much more than other MD. You get a rechargeable battery that basically lasts 4ever, and then if it does run out, You can plug your MD into a wall jack, or if you still want to go, Sharp included a little screw in thing so that the MD opperates on 1 AAA battery! The sound is supurb, and the best thing is, for a $3 cord at Radio Shack, and a couple of Mini Disks, you can save hundreds on CDs. All you have to do is connect your MD to your computer and download free mp3s on to it! Why buy an mp3 player when you can have this for about 1/100 the cost for the music? Sharp also includes a cord so you can record off your VCR, your TV, and I even recorded the remix to Magic Carpet Ride on my Triple Play 2001 Playstation game! Yep, hooked it right up to it! Now, that I have one, everyone else wants it. So get on the band wagon, the more people to get on, the faster prices will lower! Email me with any questions about the player or MiniDiscs. Ive set up a site that tells you everything about MiniDiscs and the 722, but Amazon wont let me tell you the link, so just email me for the URL.

This mindisc player/recorder is awesome! The battery life is extremely long... I only have to recharge it once every couple days, but of course this could change with how much use it gets. The jog dial makes titling very easy, and recording is also very easy. I bought a $10 cable from Radio Shack that lets me record from headphone jacks on other electronic devices, and this allows me to record basically everything I want to. The cable that is included works well with a stereo, but if you want to record from other sources, for example a portable CD player, the other cable is invaluable. I cant really comment on the headphones, as I use my own. From the few times Ive heard them, they sounds very good. Also, another excellent aspect of this device is the volume. Many of the minidisc recorders/players dont go very high when it comes to volume, but I have had no problems with this one. All in all, this player/recorder is great. It is very portable (light and small), and I think that anybody who is considering buying a portable music player should buy a minidisc device. The only thing thats missing is the widespread use of these devices. If many people start using them, I think they could be an excellent medium to replace CDs. GREAT DEVICE!
Great all-around deal

This player is exceptional in every way. It records very easily, all you have to do is hook some cords (that come with the player) to a stereo, or PC, and press record. The player has a line sync, which makes it record as soon as it hears a sound through the cable. As for the sound, it is great. I recorded Abbey Road for my first recording, and I heard many details i had never heard before. The bass control is superb when up all the way. The only problem with sound is that if you have the bass all the way up, and volume pretty high, you will hear distortion. But, Ive only heard this when I recorded through my PC, which has very bad sound. If you record off of a high-quality stereo, or a PC with good sound, you should have no problems. The ease of use in playing, editing, and titling is great, its not hard at all to combine, divide, erase, etc. The battery is very good, with a life that will last at least 5 or 6 minidiscs, and with a "AA" battery also attached, this thing will last longer than you will listen. And to top it all off, its a very affordable price for such high quality. This player is much cheaper compared to all the high-end Sony products, which dont offer anything extra than what this already has for a cheaper price. All things considered, this player is the hands-down best, especially with its price, and I suggest all of you who are planning on getting a MD, or MP3 player, get this one, it rocks.

GREAT!

Better than what I had ever expexted, excelent sound reproduction, you can send music from your computer to this product easily.
Very cool product     On: 2000-05-30

I bought the Sharp MD-MS722 minidisc recorder/player the other day. I must say that I am very satisifed. I wanted to download MP3 files from the internet, and transfer them to my minidisc. The cord provided with the minidisc is RCA type, while my computer output jack was 8 mm. I bought a 8 mm to RCA converter for a couple bucks and it works great. I can now transfer files from my computer to the minidisc and vice versa. Ive heard others say the sound reproduction is very good, and I agree.

It took me about an hour and a half to learn how to use all the features of it. The layout of the front of the player is a little busy, and may be imposing on someone first trying to use it. But it looks much harder to use than it actually is. You use a "jog dial" (a ring that turns) for a couple different functions. Its a very convenient feature and makes naming tracks a breeze. The use of the other buttons came to me quickly when I used them a time or two.

Another nice thing about this unit is how compact it is. It fits right in my pocket, so I dont have to hold it in my hand if I go for a walk. The headphones provided with the unit are extremely basic. If youre used to a pair that is more comfortable or somewhat nicer, youll need to get different headphones. A rechargable battery is included with the unit, and can be recharged 300 times, according to the manual. You recharge the battery simply by plugging the player in an electrical outlet. You can extend the play time by adding a AAA battery also. ( )

I would highly recommend this unit. END

a realy nice unit for a realy nice price

the controls are intuitive and easy to use, great sound, the bass boost is incredible! with the bass boost turned on and hooked up to my moderate computer speakers i thought I had my home subwoofer going! there was no distortion or drowning out, it was simply amazing. the side loading feature makes it really easy to load no the fly (riding your bike or driving), and makes it very durable too. Sharp also includes a digital recording cable to hook up to your DVD player and home stereo that supports it, while Sony will try to get you to pay $40 for it!

now the downsides: the battery that comes with it lasts about 300 charges and then its $50 bucks to get it replaced. also, this is just a minor thing and probable just annoys me, but....the fast forward/reverse button on the remote is backwards. you push the switch to the left to go forward and to the right to go backwards. just a minor thing that takes some getting used to, other than that the remote is wonderful.

I would recommend this player to anyone, they wont go away disappointed.

Awesome MD Player/Recorder!     On: 2000-03-29

I have only had my new MD for a few days but it has exceeded all expectations! It has a really nice look (not as bland as some other models out there), great features, has an analog and digital optical cable (which is fantastic), a convenient and useful remote control (which is backlit for when in the dark), a lithium ion battery (lasts about ten hours before recharging) and an extra alkaline battery attachment (if you want more playing time), and the headphones are not so bad either! Its fairly easy to use and the sound quality is superb! Better than expected! (I would recommend getting a car-tape adapter to listen to in the car) Overall, the product is a quality buy!

I was leary at first about getting into the whole mini-disc fad. Thought it might just come and go but after listening to this guy, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that mini-disc is here to stay. The quality and features of the Sharp MDMS722 are unbelieveable. Easy to use too. I looked carefully on-line to find reviews, everyone seemed to like it so I got it and I agree. Amazing! Get the Sharp MDMS722!
This will blow you away!     On: 2000-03-23

The sound is almost exactly the same as what you recorded it from, and Ive played in a band fro 5 years, so I can really hear it. You can even hook the thing up to a mic, and make your bands ( or whatever) recordings! And Sharp gives you everything you need! Email me with any questions about the player, Ill answer them all.
Worth the Green     On: 2000-03-22

My MD player/recorder came by mail on saturday afternoon; it is now tuesday. I spent the weekend compiling all of my favorite songs onto MDs and I must say that this product has not disappointed me in the least. I didnt even need to read the manual, just pressing buttons and finding the right plug in holes was enough. The sound I get is better than on a CD, Ive heard things on my MD player that I never picked up on the CD player. The main body of the MD player is small enough to fit in my pocket without pulling my pants down (definite plus). The only thing that I did not care for were the headphones... they give you the cheapest kind out there... but otherwise the MD-MT722 is worth every penny.

Realy quickly, great player/recorder with tons or features! Great for mp3 espacially with my Xitel Storm Platium soundcard since it has digital out! Sharp has made a great product and now includes a quick reference sheet so you dont have to sort through the manual to do something fairly basic. Oh and the little fish that swims and leaves musical notes behind him on the controler is so cool! Buy this item at a great price and you wont be dissappointed!

High expections, happy with it!     On: 2000-03-12

I have a lot of higher end audio gear and expect a lot from my stuff but this thing has exceeded what I expected. I also purchased sonic mics and I recorded a band (w/ permission) at a show, and the shound is almost better than some live albums Ive heard. One thing is that the input amp has two settings and as you increase the record gain it switches between the two and this causes a miss, but a minor problem.

I also recorded some CDs for a trip I took and this thing had more battery power than I had patience to listen to it, and the sound was wonderful. Even the bass boost thing which I expected to be trash works super fine.

I wish the remote had recording features but besides that, Im very happy.

Every sony Ive ever had broke, including DSS dishes, CDs, Car stereos, Video cams, etc. Just say No to Sony junk.

The BEST sound around!     On: 2000-03-11

Previous to owning this MD player, I had the Aiwa AM-F70, but it broke down. It had pretty decent sound, but the really bad thing about it was that the DSL (bass level) on the highest level drowned out the rest of the sound completely. I considered this MD as one of my options, and went with it, seeing the reviews. I got it yesterday, boy what a charm! The sound was incredible! I play in a 1-man band with my keyboard...holy crap! It sounded just like a studio recording! The bass does not drown out the treble at all, and it is quite compact (but not the thinnest one on the market though. Its about 1 inch thick, maybe 1 1/2). Its really easy to edit your songs, and recording with one touch of a button. The good thing about it is the slide loading. Aiwa, who did fix the MD (but unfortunately it broke down AGAIN) told us that it was the loading mechanism that was broken & the laser couldnt read right. The slide loading in this thing is a great time saver. Just put it in the front...no openings at all. It also plays MD that have been recorded by my previous player, too (it also read the name stamps on it, which really surprised me). The only con was that the unit didnt have a backlight, but the remote does. All in all, I recommend this MD...it also has a $50 rebate.

P.S. IT DOESNT SKIP!

Best handheld, no doubt     On: 2000-02-28

This is the obvius choice over MP3, CD portables, or even other MDs. With the SHARP 722 you can buy as many Mini discs as you need, try to get more than 60min out of one MP3 player. Yea you can get some songs from the net for MP3, but not as many as you think. MD you can record from radio, CD, tape, record, run out of room on one of the 74min discs, get a new one. MP3 is antiskip, but guess what, SO IS THE mini disc player. Dont be fooled by the mumbo jumbo about "mine was deffective". The people that got a defect wanted to tell people, but what about the TONS of people that are just fine with theirs? It is well worth the 230 bucks, best there is.
The Gadget to Get
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-02-26

The sharp 722 is the best mini disc player/recorder without a doubt! it has excelent sound and was my choice after 3 months of research. Every time I saw a review it said that the 722 was the best. If you dont believe me go to Good Guys and listen to it. The reason it sounds so good is because it uses a different decoding processesor unlike sony, aiwa, and jvc which use sonys atrac 4 which sucks! bass is great! the systems a little thick but my friends agree its better than their sonys. it doesnt have a line out which is evil but the trick remote with full editing is sweet! its only skipped twice (i bashed it around in my cargos). The biggest downer was when a put it in my back pack and sat on it bending the insert place which now is a 2 hand operation to take the disc out. i have a phillips cd burner but perfer md. So go at it, CDs will be extinct in a couple years. P.S. Im 13 years oldthis is my secret life trust me!
Fairly good product...     On: 2000-02-24

I bought the Sharp 722 last April (1999) or so and Ive had several problems with it. First, the headphones broke (a little tape fixed that). Then someone dropped it or something and the discs wouldnt eject after that. I took it to the place I bought it to get it fixed and it was going to cost $120! Since it was already messed up, and Im pretty good with electronics, I decided to crack it open (not literally, of course. I carefully unscrewed it) and tryed to fix it myself. It probably voided the warrenty but that didnt matter since it didnt cover the damage anyway. It turns out that the top of the slot was bent down so I just bent it back up. I also fixed the remote wire cause it was coming apart. Also, the jog dial doesnt work sometimes. To fix that I just start spinning the dial around really fast and after about 20 spins it starts working again. Anyway, thats my story and now it works fine. Its easy to use and has many cool features and accesories.
worst product I've had yet     On: 2000-02-20

this MD broke down on me in the first month of use. Then SHARP didnt get me a replacment for three months. THEN, when I got the replacment, it broke down in one month again. SHARP WONT refund its customers for bad products so now I wait to recieve my third 722 MD which will probably break again... STAY AWAY FROM SHARP>>> their customer service is HORRIBLE

I just got this player 3 days ago. It is incredibly easy to use(record and play). The sound quality is the best Ive ever heard. If youre concerned w/battery life, this new lithium ion rechargable battery lasts forever! Also, the jog dial makes titling a lot easier than using regular buttons. The bass also sounds really good and doesnt drown out everything else. Believe it or not, the remote helps. It seems kind of stupid at first( I thought it was when I saw it), but it really isnt. I put the player in my backpack, and use the remote and headphones outside of it. Its really nice to have. Overall, whether or not you are good w/electronics, or a beginner, this is the best choice. Sharp included an analog cable and a digital optical cable so you can record right away. Its ease of use, quality, looks, features, and best sound quality make the 722 the best choice.

Best sound quality of any on the market.     On: 2000-01-28

I get my 722 for Christmas and it has been a great product in the few weeks that Ive had it. The sound is always clear, the bass does not drown out the treble as is the case with some Sony models. This model does not have the UTOC error exhibited by the 702 and by some other earlier models. Moreover, recording is very easy. I dont have a digital output device available, so I use analog recording. I can take a line direct from the sound card of my PC to record my mp3 collection on MiniDisc. This convenience is heightened by the fact that this unet will not skip under most normal circumstances. I find that for use in the car or while jogging, it will not skip. The sound is perfectly clear (much better than the Sony, Panasonic, or Aiwa models I tested at Circuit City.) I highly recommend the MD-MS722. Its sound quality leads the field, it almost never skips, and, personally, I like the appearance as well. However, it is not the smallest on the market. If size is your only requirement, dont buy this unit.

Shop around, you can find this unit for < $250, and there is a $50 mail-in rebate. The unit comes with an extra battery pack (holds 1 AA for ~3 hours extra play time), strap, carring case, headphones, AC adapter, TOS cable (for making perfect digital copies from your optical-out components, micro plug stereo connector cable, and a micro plug to RCA cable. I bought the unit primarily to record some two-guitar jam sessions. The input plug provides power for plug in microphones. Get a decent stereo mic and you have everything you need to make digital recordings of your performances. Also has a mono mode that doubles the recording time.

Second Review - Live Recordings
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-01-01

Plaese see my review above. This is a follow-on to that. Ok, I followed the steps above at my last jam session and made my first live recording. It was awesome. My fellow musicians enjoyed hearing it. A friend told me: "this sounds like real music I like it!" The instrumentation of the group is violin, guitar, and acoustic bass. The Sharp captured it all. And the mike I was using was actually pretty cheap.
Sharp definitely sounds the best!     On: 1999-12-15

I was all ready to buy the Aiwa, based on favorable reviews I had read. But I decided to take a trip to Circuit City and actually listen for myself. Now I really wanted to buy the Aiwa, it is so much prettier design-wise than its competition. But after listening, I have to say the Sharp sounds so much better than the Sony and the Aiwa! I was amazed at the obvious difference. I am not thrilled with the interface on the Sharps, or their thickness or headphones, but all the plusses of this unit definitely outweigh the negatives. And as far as sound quality (loudness, clarity, bass), the others dont compare. I just wish they would improve the physical design and include better quality headphones.

hi everyon ei recently bought a sharp 722 from amazon, it is awsome. the jog dial is great i love it soo much this was supposed to be an early christmas present but i beggeg my dad to give it to me. the record time and the play time is very long, and the record and title features are a sinch. the only thing that i dont like about it are the headphones and that you have to but a stereo to stereo cable which is only 2 dollars that the 50 dollar optical cable that it comes with which doesnt fut most stereos. my favorite part of the 722 is the jog dial and the remote, so that you dont have to hold the mini disc in your hand to change tracks. All and all the 722 is the best mini disc player on the market and if i had enough money i would buy another one for my room and the car. i hope that this evaluation was very useful to you...

This is my first MD player and i love it already. Its so easy to record your own MD and the sound is soooo good. The only hassle with this product is the titling of tracks. Its not hard but it takes so long. You need to get one!

I got my unit just yesterday. It was very easy to learn how to divide, delete, and combine tracks. The freedom is awesome. I plan to use this for live music recording of my jazz group. But until our next live session I practiced on Bob Edwards and Morning Edition. I had a ball pausing, dividing tracks, then deleting the promos and sponsor messages. This is just how I would record my group.

1. Turn it on for a set. 2. Edit out the time between songs, by dividing and deleting. 3. Feed the output to my computers sound card. 4. Then create an audio CD and share with my fellow musicians in the group. 5. Or maybe create some MP3 tracks for upload to the Internet!

THE most for $$$     On: 1999-12-02

I have used the internet extensively to research my mini disc purchased and finally decided on the Sharp MDMS722. The reviews I found at Amazon.com were very helpful to me and I LOVE this player/recorder. It is small, convenient, and the sound is excellent. (except for the headphones) I use a pair of Sony headphones MDR-A17. The jog dial is very easy to use and the instructions are easy to understand. I have a Sony home mini disc recorder at home and the controls of the Sharp are pretty close to these. I have never had any trouble with using and editing the discs between these two players. The 50$ rebate really helped. I read that the Sharp 702? had had some trouble and sure enough, I found several refurbished models at egghead auction. They were selling for as much as I paid for the MDMS722 NEW! Boy, it sure pays to shop around. Im glad that Amazon has a forum for the consumer to share their real life reviews of products.

Even though it is my Christmas present and im not supposed to even oppen it, the Sharp MD-MS722 is a great portable unit.I was kind of worried about it even being able to hook up to my home stereo, but it does. The extra features on this player are great and easy to use. This player is definitely worth the money it costs. It makes the switch from conventional CDs to minidisc a whole lot better.

If you're interested in the MD format, this is a great buy     On: 1999-11-04

I bought my Sharp722 about 2 months agao, and I honestly have to say it is the best protable music system Ive ever seen. I have heard the Sharp702 had problems, and it dosent have the edit functions of the 722. This player has a nice display, great sound and recording options. IT also has the added bonus of a huge battery life, as well as 3 power options. IT has a great range of accesories included, however you might need to buy a stereo-stereo cable at Radio Shack for 3 bucks. The rechargable battery is tiny, and holds 10 hours of play time. Teh jog shuttle control is easy to use and very efficient. The headphones ore addaquate, but you might want to buy a really sup[erb pair. All in all this is an excelent buy, and much less expensive then comprable Sony moddles.
Great editing functions, pity about the manual.

I use the Sharp MD recorder for recording interviews for radio. Unlike the Sony MD recorders Ive used in the past, this model is not self-explanatory (it looks like a nuclear powered flight control panel!) so the poorly written and ambiguous manual reduced my initial pleasure in using it. Now that Ive experimented a bit, Im finding the Sharp has much better functionality than its Sony counterparts. Editing is a breeze and considerably more accurate than is possible on Sonys versions (though it would be good to have a function to listen to the excerpt you are about to delete in isolation to the tracks either side of it. It may well be that this function exists but none of us have been able to find it in the manual!). The sound is very good and far better than what can be achieved through traditional recording methods in radio. More importantly, it is better than the quality achievable when using Sony MD recorders. Had it not been for the poorly written manual in combination with the lack of self explanatory functionality, I would have rated this as a five star.

Corrupted TOC and would no longer play MD     On: 1999-11-03

After recording an MD, I entered the track information with the nice Jog Dial of the 722. When finished, I hit stop so the TOC would write to the MD, but got an error. The MD would not work within the 722 any more. When I tried it in a different MD player, it worked fine, but the 722 just showed a TOC error.

I have no idea how good the product is in general, but it gets only one star for how it worked for me. The one star is because it didnt destroy the MD beyond use on another player, but the 722 sure couldnt handle the disc any more.

Drop dead awesome     On: 1999-10-30

I got this Sharp 722 about 3 months ago..... I use it almost every day. So far I have 50 mini discs recorded and they all sound so awesome. My player travels everywhere with me and was the envy of the djs at house parties in Jamaica last month. If the rastas in the mountians around mandeville get access to the internet I hope amazon has alot of these babies in stock.
this is awsome.

Sharp MS-722, has a Sensational Sound!!!!
by: Anonymous    On: 1999-10-23

I have a Sony MZ-R55, and the sound was the same as the Sharp MS-722. The Sharp MS-722 is cheaper and has a sensational quality sound! JUST BUY IT! and see it for yourself.
The most Brilliant thing ever invented

The Sharp MD-MS722 beats any electronic item I have ever seen or heard of. The size might be a little thick, but the quality, slot- type inserting of Minidiscs, the Jog Dial Control, and the battery life are just everything I could want. I got the player in March, and ever since then it goes everywhere with me. to college, in my car, to parties, everywhere. Only thing I have to say is BUY IT!
I own a Sony portable, and this one BLEW ME AWAY....     On: 1999-10-18

like i said, i own a sony portable, and this player blows me away....the great features (remote with tons of functions, AA battery add-on for up to 16 hours playback and 11 recording, jog dial, tons of editing modes and great recording, etc) along with such a great price just astounds me. this thing sounds SO good....you can hear the echoes across the recording studios and all sorts of little nuances that youd never heard....i am hearing tons of stuff i had never picked up on before, and this thing goes LOUD without any distortion....and the recording quality is just jaw-dropping. basically, if you are looking for an all-in-one minidisc system, this is it, and with an adapter and digital recording cable included this thing is as versatile as a home deck....simply amazing, forget sony, this player is it....
Probably the best minidisc player/recorder on the market

I havent really tried any other minidisc player/recorders, but I have tried the Sharp 702 and this beats it by far. The greatest parts about this unit are the style and unique functions. It is so easy to title and the move function and the rechargeable battery are a great touch. Once you figure out how to record, it is very easy. This is worth every penny, but you can find it cheaper elsewhere online(also, the manufacturer has a $50 rebate now)Definitely the best music player I have ever bought.

Brilliant for the price!!!

I havent seen or listend to many mini disc players, but of those I have the sharp 722 must be the best! I listen to my friends 702 and I tested a sony player and wasnt suprised by the sound or the desing. However when I tried out the 722 and I was astonished! The sound was fantastic (ok the headphones are rubbish but I only use my own pair) and the striking desing! This amazed me and if you compare the price with a sony unit its pretty cheap. The unit also had a nice looking remote from which you were able to control almost every feature. The 722 has many differnt functions to many to mention but they include: an editing function which allows you to name your disc and tracks, a combine and split track funtion, 24bit atrac and many more.So I bought and I am very pleased with the unit and I encourage you to buy it too!!!
Pretty Good

It sounds damn good, good batt life, ok remote, too thick for an MD player, jog dial is nice.
An incredible machine for a good price...     On: 1999-07-15

...the Sharp 722 is all that i could ask for in a CD player replacement. For size, it is the size of about six floppy disks stacked on top of each other. Sound quality is excellent, and control layout is well done. Even the provided headphones are very nice. My only gripe is that the instruction manuals intructions are a little hard to grasp on the first reading (but the unit is easy to use) and you can occasionally here the head in the player moving when you switch songs (but it IS quiet).
Well rounded recorder/player

I recently bought this recorder/player (not from Amazon - they werent in the electronics business then) for use to transfer all those bulky cds to MD format. Unit has a nice long battery life, easy to use, and well made. Highly recommended.
Definitely the Best

This thing is the best audio equipment Ive ever bought. The MD medium, while expensive at the outset, is really cheap and produces perfect CD quality digital sound. With a cable you can buy for $10, you can quickly record anything that grabs your fancy on the fly and save it permanently on a durable MD. The thing is small, too. A bit heavy for an MD, but very durable, and the slot style loading makes it much less prone to break compared to many MD players with clamshell type loading. The styling is very sleek, and the controls are very intuitive. The sound quality and bass boost are very impressive, and the sound distortion is so low that it can be used as a sound source to master other recordings. The battery life is very long (about 10 hours of listening), and the included battery case gives you another 10-12 hours with a normal AA battery. Overall, no complaints in sight from me.
