I love this thing. This was the very first mini disk player I ever bought. I love these head phones, the sound is by far the best I have ever came across. If I lost these I would go mad, I use them with almost everything I own, they are amazing. The only thing I hate about this thing is the transferring of songs. I hope newer models will have a USB port on them. Naming the songs was also a pain. But, I love this player and will gladly buy from them again. On: 2003-07-06
I have had this for 5 years and used if somewhat but never abused it. I always kept it in a zip around pouch from Sony and the player works awesome. I have had the charger not work and the charge on the batteries were slow but overall the design is leek and awesome with great features. Its worth it but I have retired from minidisc players as my mp3 player has taken over my music life. Its wonderful to record anytype of audio books, music, record cd, mp3, etc... Its not a flimsy design. Its sturdy and a bit heavy but you can feel how well built this player is. You will appreciate the features of this player. Best Sony minidisc player/recorder. On: 2002-10-02
My first minidisc player is the only portable Ive ever bought. No skips while jogging and I can edit discs on the fly after Ive recorded them from a CD player using the optical input cable. On: 2002-07-25
My only star??......The MD looks. Its nice...really nice...If you buy it, the player looks will be the most important item, as in no time -and I mean NO TIME-, when this little-nice & cute device stops recording/editing and dies..."UTOC ERROR, a famous one"...you will have it as a shelf-decoration. Go for a Sony, or youll regret it. On: 2002-03-26
I bought one of these in 98 and there are 2 reasons I didnt give it 5 stars is that the battery life stunk...(they may have fixed this on later models)and it dosent have a record button on the remote. I just upgraded to the sharp MT877 which has much better D/A and A/D(digital to analogue, analogue to digital)converters. This is a good thing for quality of reproduction but it also makes it more susceptible to clipping, so in other words you can push the 702 a little harder. by: Anonymous On: 2001-12-18
I have this MiniDisc player for 3 years now (I bought it when it still cost 300 bucks...), never had a problem with, and still very happy! It fell on the floor so many times, and has scratches all over by now, but it plays wonderfully! On: 2001-07-21
This mini disc player served me well for about a year and then I started to get repeated TOC ERRORS. I checked online and it is a common problem with the sharp mini disc players. I can no longer use mine and I am trying to get Sharp to replace the one I currently have. You should probably spend a few more dollars and buy the Sony models. Sony invented the mini disc player and their players are much more reliable. by: Anonymous On: 2000-07-22
This minidisc recorder is in a class of its own. At only 169.99* it can be seen as a very worthwhile investment into the future. With crystal clear recordings, smooth polished playing, and many functions which can make the user feel at ease, the minidisc is ideal for any long plane, train or car trip, or indeed, to use during that 10min stroll through the park.Eventually minidiscs will take over the audio world, due to their small size, ease of transport, and crystal clear audio tracks. Unlike the cassette, the discs never ware out, and so, memories can be recorded, for ever, without fear that they will ware out. They can also withstand an awful lot of shaking, and shock, therefore making it, for the first time possible to listen to what ever you want, going through turbulence, or heading down that bumpy highway, and into the future. I decided to take the plunge into Minidisc by buying this unit - the price was right and the features on this guy were impressive. First, the plus side - it has a disk drive type load/eject mechanism - other models you open up the unit and slide the disc in - this model you just pop the disc in like a floppy drive - no hassles. Second, you can dynamically change the recording level while recording - most other units dont do this. Third, has an MDlink digital input - for flawless copying from CD. This is very cool because it automatically marks tracks. Also records from analog sources and looks for periods of silence to auto mark tracks. Of course, like other similar units it can combine/split tracks after theyre recorded. Also, the rechargeable batter is nice - I find it lasts about 7 hours depending on volume, skipping songs etc. This is more than adequate for even extreme situations - like an LA to NY flight. On the down side - the unit lets you enter titles for individual tracks and even the whole disc, but the interface for doing this is ackward. Also, the play modes are limitted - you can single track repeat, repeat the whole disc, or shuffle play the whole disc. You cant program your own tracks into the unit - I guess to some degree the fact that you can reorder tracks on the disc makes up for this, but not really. Two other downsides are the included wired remote control and the included headphones. I suggest dumping the included phones immediately - theyre ok sound wise, but only ok, and the cord is too short. The remote is cool - it features a backlit display that mirrors all of the information displayed on the unit itself (and strangely, the unit itself does not have a backlit display) - but the controls on the remote are too small and ackwardly positioned to be of much use - also, by touch theyre pretty indistinguishable from one another and since you often use the remote in your pocket, this is a big disadvantage. Also, the remote has a small aligator clip on the back so that you can attach it to your clothes, but it seems to be facing the wrong way which increases the ackwardness of the remote. Finally, one downside of this unit which you may not notice is that its ATRAC compression algorithm, which the unit uses to remove "non-essential" parts of the audio so that it will fit on the minidiscs limitted storage space, is an older version of the algorithm. Newer models from Sony and Sharp have newer versions of the algorithm which supposedly results in better recording quality, though I cannot comment on the accuracy of this. by: Anonymous On: 2000-06-03
An excellent MD unit, that makes recording a snap. It plays crystal clear and can be cranked up wicked loud. The remote is a handy device that eliminates the "pocket fishing" problem plagued by other MD units. The only downfall for the device is the rechargable battery pack that comes with the MD. Its great because you can charge it over and over again, but on long road trips, the battery dies in six hours, and if you dont have the AA battery caddy, your SOL. Overall though, a worthy buy. On: 2000-06-03
A little over a year after purchasing this unit, it simply stopped playing, giving only a "TOC errorA" message. After sending the unit to a repair shop (the unit was barely out of warranty -please be warned Sharp provides only a 90 day labor warranty, and a one year parts warranty), I was told that the laser was defective. Cost for repair: $150. Sharp refused to help me with this problem in any way. My recommendations are to not buy ANY Sharp products. by: Anonymous On: 2000-06-02
A while back i was debating over wheather to get an Mp3 player or a mini disc player. In the end i went with the minidisc for the reason that blank discs are extremely cheap, unlike extra Mp3 memory. When i got this from Amazon, i was pleasantly suprized. This thing comes with all the cables to hook up to a stereo, computer or tv, and record with amazing quality. Whats even better is that you can even record by sticking any old pair of headphones in the mic jack! Finally, the best part is that it LITERALLY NEVER SKIPS! I can even shake it up and down while i listen (or record) and nothing happens. This thing is awesome! On: 2000-06-02

well, i just got my 702 today.... i took it right out of thebox an recorded 10 of my favorite songs from mp3 format. i turned itoff and i got that "UTOC" or whatever error. I re-recorded them and it didnt show up. this is definitly one of the best mini disc players i have used. my friend has a Aiwa one and i think its crappy compared to the 702. END On: 2000-06-01

Ive had my 702 for over two years now, and it still works fairly well. Yes, I said two years - and I still only paid about $75 more than the list price on this discontinued model. About a year in, I got the infamous --- UTOC error --- on a disk. Went to Best Buy and bought a Maxell MD cleaner (after taking the silly thing apart, etc. trying to "fix" it). Ran the cleaner three times, and everything was fine. I can still record, but I have to clean it more often now (every couple of months), or I get the errors (or skipping disks) again. I run my 702 between 8 and 48 hours per week. All I can say is: if you have a cleaner for your CD player, and your DVD player, and your VCR, and a cleaner for your cassette player, WHY DONT YOU HAVE ONE FOR YOUR MD? If you have a dead 702 because of UTOC, why dont you spend a few bucks and see if you can fix it? On: 2000-05-25

I bought my Sharp ms702 a while ago and it has been great. No problems whatsoever, and it has the best quality on anything that I have heard on a portable piece of sound equipment. On: 2000-05-20
it works perfectly..even though its a little big it still gives perfect sound and look really nice..i have had mines only for a week now...but there is also a downside..the batteries run out too easy On: 2000-05-16
When I opened the box, I said out loud: "Wow." It looks a little different than in the picture. It came with almost everything I needed to record from any source, except, for a minijack connecter. And I dont like that UTOC Error either. I havent seen it much, or recently, but after I record a few songs and the error comes up and the songs arent there, it gets me really ticked off. This only happens occasionally. I still gave the 702 4 stars because its really easy to record, it has great sound, and its at a convinient price. Simply put, this machine is one of the best Ive seen. On: 2000-05-15

This is a very nice package. The MDMS702 is light, small, and can both play and record. It also has a "Table of Contents" function so you can enter some text on a particular minidisc. The current version of the package comes with two dubbing cables, one for the standard Left and Right output from your stereo, and another for direct optical dubbing from another minidisc player or stereo component unit. The unit also comes with a carrying bag, headphones, and a power supply, as well as a rechargable lithium ion battery. The battery will charge in about three hours, giving play time of 6 hours and record time of four hours. Another feature is the ability to connect a microphone for business conferences or other important meetings. You can set the device to record at a "low-resolution" level, thus doubling the 74 minute disc space. This will save you money on minidiscs if you do not need the fancier recording method, since such "hi-res" recording is better suited to music than audio memos or meetings. This is an attractive unit, and seems to be quite sturdy. The minidiscs pop in and out like a pop tart in a toaster. Care should be used while inserting the disc, so the mechanism is not forced. I bought this unit because it was small enough to take while walking or excercising, and had both the play and record functions. This is the first Minidisc unit Ive used extensively, I have to say I am very pleased with it. As an introduction to the Minidisc format, I doubt you could find a better deal. The package comes with everything youll need to get started except blank minidiscs. If youll be using it for a memo or meeting recorder, you will have to purchase a microphone seperately. by: Anonymous On: 2000-05-01
Im excited and thrill to announce that your mini disc player/recorder (MD-MS702) survive the most horrific of event. As usual I enjoy listening to my favorite songs wherever I go. I wanted to do the same last weekend by taking it with me in an actual rock climb. The player fell out of my pants pocket and plummeted 40 feet into jagged limestone rock below. I assume immediately that it was damaged beyond repair, and so I didnt bother to play it on sight. But today, out of curiosity I tinker with the machine by plugging it in to the AC adapter, and to my utter amazement it works. Im delighted and dumbfounded. The chipboard inside is bent, and the disc couldnt be ejected without pressing on the machine from the top and the bottom. The skip function works without a hitch. The only feature damaged was the recording button, but Im content that the machine works at all. IT FELL 40 FEET DURING A ROCK CLIMB! Last but not least, a FM tuner is certainly a welcome feature to the newer model. On: 2000-04-30

By now if you have gotten all the way to the bottem of thereview page your wondering if this wheather you should buy this osnot. . . My 702 has never gotten that (UTOC) error. Some great things about this MD are: 1) It comes with a Opticle digitle cable and an RCA cable 2)Headphones 3)Remote 4)Rechargeble battery and charger and a case. There is one set back. Track names. You have to press the same button over and over again and it gets to be annoying when you just put 10 songs on your mini disk. Just make sure if you buy this, buy mini disks as well. I remember i had to wait for my bday to get it and when it rolled around i didnt have any mini-disks to record on. Between this and the 722 i chose this because, on the 722 youre paying 30 bucks for a jog dial system. Its not worth it. On: 2000-04-16
An Mp3 player can only hold a few hours of music at the most. But this minidisk player with the right adapter can hold unlimited Mp3 music with great sound. The Optical Digital Input included in this has unbelievable sound.Better than CD sound. The analog has ok sound. It takes a little time to write the name of the songs in this because this Minidisk player does not have a Jog-Dial in it.Other than that this Minidisk player is great.P.S. It also has rechargeable batteries included in it. On: 2000-04-15

Here below I will tell all of you some useful things which willhelp your MD-702 even greater. 1. You dont have to buy the orginalcigarette lighter from, get one that compatable with panasonic, it works. 2. You can perchase the extra battery unit(it holds regular AAA). Another thing, I had this unit for over a year in the car now, and it works perfectly. Meanwhile my friend had a Sony MD-player in his car, and broke within a year. I can tell you that this little thing might not look as fancy as it is, and maybe a bit too thick, but its great in and out(except writing names). And plus, it never skips on me, no matter I am listening at home, walking, runing, or driving. My conculsion, this MD-player worth more than you are paying for(compare to other MD-players). I got this unit for my birthday, and was blown awaybyit. Almost everything is great about it, but there are flaws: 1: Ifyour trying to listen to it near a tv, it doesnt work because of magnetic fields 2: If you want to plug it into your cigarette lighter in your car, you need to buy an adapter from the company for $45! 3: The battery doesnt have a very long life. It is 6.5 hrs and takes 3 to chargeThese bad things dont make me hate the product. I love it because: 1: You can record all music formats onto it- mp3, cd, cassette, record, 8-track, etc. If you want, you can record sounds from your tv or radio! 2: It is very small and easy to use. The remote makes changing tracks easy while your driving, especially at night, the remote has indiglo, like watches 3: You can type in track names. Although people seem to like the jog dial on the 722, I dont think holding down a button until you get the letter you want is such a hassle. 4: If you need to remember something, you can plug your headphones (any, not just the ones that came with it) into the mic jack and record your thoughts. If you follow what the manual says, you should have no problems On: 2000-04-10
I have had my MD player for close to a year now and I use it daily and very extrenuously. Three screws fell out (nothing big though). After about eight months it starts acting up and doesnt read any disc you put in it (even new ones). It frequenly skips, even when sitting untouched on my desk. But the sound quality is excellent, especially when I record digitally live at some concerts. It just brings a tear to my eye when listeing to the live recordings, up until the unit skips, and then doesnt find itself on the disk and turns itself off. And after all of this use the unit has become so messed up that it wont even record. I took it in a total of three times where I was lucky enough to have purchased an extended warranty on it. And after all three weeks that I waited MiniDiscless, I found out that three times cannot fix the unit and I get store credi for a new one. So I suggest if you need an MD player that can take abuse, buy something else. The 702 cant handle everyday abuse. On: 2000-04-09

First of all, let me say that this is an excellent product. I dont regret purchasing it. The audio quality is great, and its very easy to make recordings from any source, including mp3s. But there are a few things Id change if I could, and Ill list them for your benefit.1. Its rather difficuilt to enter track names. Theres a single "character" button, and it gets old pressing it 26 times to get to "Y." Get my drift? 2. The rechargable battery only gives you 6.5hrs of play on a full charge (3hrs to charge). Other than that, Im completely happy with the 702. Its a great product for the money, and Im sure youll enjoy using it. E-mail me if you have any questions (viper118@bigfoot.com). by: Anonymous On: 2000-03-20
I have had the Sharp 702 for 9 months now and have loved it since the day I got it. My main purpose in purchasing it was for live recording. Once I found a good quality, stereo, clip-on micrphone, I was in business. Being a musician it is a perfect way to record yourself and/or band. Just run it through a mixer, or even record it live with the one stereo microphone for a rough edit. Another item of interest for me is taking records and 7 inches onto a higher quality format. Maybe youre wondering why I still buy records, but if youre not MiniDisc is the answer. By puting my records on MiniDisc I can easily listen to them that way, or take them into my computer to burn a CD copy. And the quality is top notch! Ive used my MD for recording lectures at school and transfering a variety of audio mediums to digital quality. And it is great for MP3s too. Leave it up to your imagination to find greater possiblities for the Sharp 702. The only reason I give this model a four star rating is because there are better models out there (such as the Sharp 722) for relatively the same cost. They have longer battery life, a jog-dial for easy text intput, and 40-sec. non-skip protection. Given that mine has never skipped, even after being droppped during recording, I imagine it would be pretty difficult to interupt the music with 40 sec. memory. So, go MD. If you dont have the extra $30 to spend for the 722, this model will do you just fine. I hope to enjoy using it for many more years to come. On: 2000-03-19

This thing is great. Everyone should get one of these things. They are cool and great for recording MP3s, not to mention CDs. And this one comes with the Digital Cable, too. Pick it up if you can afford it, as the price is the only drawback. On: 2000-03-18

Well, i just got my md player as a gift from my father. I was really excited at first and decided to get some information on the product. First place i went was the official sharp web site and things looked good. Then i came here and sure enough there were tales of the "UTOC error" and stuff. I havent gotten to use my MD player yet, im going out to get some blank discs today. I sure hope things work out. Im a little nervous but it turns out I have the MD-MS702 MK version. I hope it doesnt give me that error. If anyone with the MK version has had problems please e-mail me and let me know. I gave the product 5 stars cause it looks cool sofar. I really like the remote control and i hope everything works out. On: 2000-02-21

This device is worth every penny! I never had an error and I believe that anyone that got the UTOC error was in the very small minority. PS- Better for MP3 recordings than anything else! On: 2000-02-17
Im still shopping for a portable MD player, and appreciate all the reviews here. I own an AIWA shelf 3CD/5MD/Tuner recorder that was available here last year, and with which I am totally satisfied. If you can afford it, I HIGHLY recommend the SONY MDX-65 MD changer for your car. It requires a compatible SONY in-dash unit to control the changer, and you can select from radio, radio/cassette, and radio/CD. The changer is in my glove box and requiring no magazine, five MDs may be changed while a sixth is playing. On: 2000-01-31

Ive had 2 of these. The 1st one got the UTOC error after 2 months. Up until then, it was pretty good. Great sound, but sometimes if I walked with it in my jacket pocket, it would skip eventually. After the UTOC error, I got it replaced and within ONE MONTH, I got the same error! I cant recommend this unit and I think its been discontinued. On: 1999-12-24
I think others have addressed the quality of minidiscs well...the quality is great, and its a lot cheaper than having memory cards for a MP3 player. Some caveats though...the minidisc players are definitely larger and heavier than MP3 players. But smaller and lighter than CD players. May not be an issue for many people, but I personally love being able to just stick an MP3 player in my pocket, and not even know its there. Minidiscs have several really big advantages...they virtually never skip. Ive even dropped mine on the ground and it didnt miss a beat. Well-built too...it didnt break even though Ive dropped it several times. The ability to add track numbers is great. I often choreograph routines to music and the minidisk player is great for this, I just take the song and split it into a bunch of tracks so I can easily work on one section at a time. The remote is a real nice feature, this allows you to have the player itself in a backpack or bag, and use the remote on the headphone cord to handle the volume and skip forward or back. My biggest complaint about this particular player though, is how tedious it is to enter track names in. Of course, this is something you dont even GET with CD players, but if a features there, I expect it to work well. The worst thing is that you cant listen to music and enter the track name at the same time. I could live with how long it takes to do, if I didnt have to do it in silence. For that reason alone, I would probably recommend looking at other minidisk players. On: 1999-12-23

I spent considerable time researching the relative merits of aMP3 (Diamond Rio 500) vs minidisc player. I decided on a minidiscplayer because of media cost and ease of use. I also selected the Sharp 702 after reading numberous reviews of other brands - it appeared that you got a little more bang for your buck with the Sharp. Well, I ordered a 702 and spent a weekend playing with it. I took it out of the box only to discover that there was no disc included - since my discs were on backorder, I had to make a trip to a local electronics store before I could get started. However, once I got going everything was a breeze. I plugged the Sharp into my CD player and was recording in less than 5 minutes. The unit worked flawlessly during my recording of 10 minidiscs. The manual is a little confusing, but I eventually figured everything out. The titling function is very simple, but time consuming (about 1 minute per track). Overall Im extremely pleased with the Sharp and it was a great buy. On: 1999-12-20

After extensive research between a portable MP3 and MD players. I decided to go with the MD format for its non-linear recording (random access like CDs, unlike DAT & cassettes-"linear recording"), titling the disc and track w/ names, very compact size, which also helps in preventing skips, and its relatively long battery life. After careful consideration, I found that MP3s were too expensive per minute of music. While the price of RAM flash cards are dropping theyre no where close to the price of blank MDs. 1 MD-74min($4) + MD player($200)=$220 for 300min or near CD quality, however MP3 player ($140) + 32MB RAM ($80)=$220 for 100min of better than FM stereo quality. Also theres no limit on the number of MDs you can use and archive for your collection. On: 1999-12-07

I wanted to get into amatuer recording, concerts and other live events. I did alot of research and found that DAT was just out of my price range. MD was the next best thing in digital recording technology. I bought it in oct of 98 and have been very pleased with my results. Ive even compared my recordings to recordings made with 3 and 4 thousand dollar systems and can hardly tell the difference. A nice pair of microphones and this unit is a beautiful thing. This unit has never failed me. I would highly reccomend it by: Anonymous On: 1999-11-12
I debated for a looong time on whether to buy a portable mp3 player or an MD but finally decided on the MD because of the ability to change discs. I bought it when I came to the US on vacation. Im really pleased with my player and I must congratulate Sharp on a product well made ! WAY TO GO SHARP ! I luckily bought the 702 MK version so I guess the UTOC error shouldnt show up on my machine.... In the end, if youre someone who takes his music seriously, go ahead and buy the Sharp coz it beats any other player/recorder on the market hands down ! On: 1999-11-12
I have just bought my unit and I am really enjoying the excellent sound. I do agree that it should be easier titling the tracks. (I understand that its easier to do with the 722 model). I use the 702 everywhere: biking, at the gym, in the car (with a CD-to-tape adaptor) and so on. So far I have not had a single problem and I hope it stays that way. I am thinking about getting an adaptor to plug it to the car, that way Id avoid using the units battery so fast. On: 1999-11-11

I bought my 702 when I was in NYC and havent had any problems yet in the last 2 months. MD is an awesome format. I record music from MP3s onto MD. I debated between a MP3 player and a MD player for about a month. The main thing that swayed me toward the MD player was being able to change the discs. Most MP3 players are limited to 64megs, and the memory is so darn expensive! So far I have recorded approx. 400megs worth of mp3s on my MD player. The only thing that I dont like about my MD player is the way you have to name the tracks. It gets very tiresome in just a few minutes when your pushing a button rather than a jog dial. Oh.. the only other thing that I wish it had was an optical output. But i havent seen one on any of the portable models. Maybe sometime in the future? In a nutshell if your looking for a great MiniDisc player that acually sounds better than the rest, go with Sharp. On: 1999-11-09

I have had this unit for over a year. I have used it for biking, recording concerts, long car trips, on 4wd roads, and even on washboard roads. I have not had a problem once, and have been amazed the punishment it will take without skipping. About the only problem has been a reduction in battery life, but that is par for the course with heavy use. The only thing I wish is that it had a better way of titling tracks - it is slow and cumbersome to do. On: 1999-11-01

I bought it last year [1998] by mail order. Since then I have had only one problem. Once, during optical recording, a message DEFECT appeared. It is hard to say what was the reason of it, cause I have never seen it after that. I use MD702 every day at least few hours. I have already recorded about thirty discs from other CDs. Sound quality is good, features also. I have never come across U TO ERROR yet! I strongly recommend replacing headphones to take a full advantage of MD sound. I bought Grado SR-60 and these are perfect-match to my 702. The sound is awesome! What makes me obviously even happier. by: Anonymous On: 1999-10-26
This is the greatest format for music ever. This utoc error thing hasnt happened to me and ive had it for over a month. My favorite thing of all is that, unlike my CD Player, it FITS IN MY POCKET! The quality is just as good as a cd, and ive made many mixes and copies of CDs and not experienced any problems with quality or anything. A great buy all around. On: 1999-10-23
I got my Sharp 702 in like the beginging of August and all i can say is i love it and i love the optical recording with my Xitel sound card with an Optical out. i have already recorded over 30 discs and i cant get over how awsome MD is i am soon hoping to get a deck for my car. On: 1999-10-05
The best type of media that you can buy. As far as recordable media goes, minidiscs are beyond compare. Theyre re-reordable, optical so that they have wonderous sound quality, and are very hard to hurt. Ive thrown several against walls repeatedly and they work perfectly still. Theyre also small, portable, and hold as much as any CD... Sharp has taken this form of media and made the perfect product to play it on. Its exceedingly reliable, has great sound quality, records (via standard AV input or optical cable), easy to work with, and the fact that it comes with a lithium-ion battery is just icing on the cake! When fully charged, Ive had it play for about 16 hours or so without recharging it. Too sweet! by: Anonymous On: 1999-09-22
The "dreaded utoc error" is a problem that Sharp has fixed. Look for the MD-MS702 with an "MK" added to the end of the model number. Youre buying old stock if you get the non-MK version. The MK units work flawlessly. I cant say enough good things about my Sharp. Asthetically, I think its much nicer than the other units on the market. Functionally, it beats the pants off my friends Sony unit. Hes looking to unload his Sony R55 and get the Sharp 702. You shouldnt be disappointed with this player/recorder. On: 1999-09-21

Ive had my 702 for 9 months and counting now and it still works like a charm everytime I use it. The "dreaded" utoc error still hasnt shown up yet and I doubt it will after all this time(hopefully). The main reason I got it was because it was a lot cheaper than any other comparable sony unit. The features on the unit are all youd expect to find on top of the line portable cd players and more. I especially like the fact you can delete, edit, and move tracks around if you change your mind without rerecording an hours worth of music. Trust me, after doing that with tapes for the past several years, Ive wondered how I ever managed without my 702. It also sounds just as good as my cars cd player which is why I dont even bother using the optional cd player I got. Instead of bringing out a binder full of cds, I just grab my 702 and with 5 mds in my hand, Im ready to go. Its not as sleek or small as Id like but its gotten me through more boring daily morning commutes than Id care to remember. I only wish there was a radio option on it but I dont think there are too many portable md players that currently have that option. You really cant go wrong with this unit. by: Anonymous On: 1999-09-06
I got my MS-702 last summer. I love it! The sound quality is really good, and it has been pretty reliable. There are a few squawks I have though. The UTOC (Unable Table of Contents, like the directory on a computer disk)that some the others have experienced has only happened to me using sony discs. I use Memorex now, never have that problem. The battery seems to be running shorter. I didnt think lithium-ion developed a memory. Replacement Li is expensive. I got the external AA pack and car power cord. They last longer, but the car power cord wont charge the Li battery. I wish there were a bigger selection of pre-recorded music available. Im not sure if the MD has what it takes to avoid being the betamax recorder of the 90s. its been around for a long time but hasnt seemd to really catch on yet. Well see. On: 1999-09-01
I gave this unit a try and ended up very disappointed (see other one star rating). Without much invested in research and development, Sharp can afford to sell their recorders so cheap. I returned my non-recordable minidisc recorder for Sharps next in line, the MD-MT15(s) and instead of quitting on me after only 3 days, it went an entire week before the dreaded "UTOC ERROR" showed up and erased my music! If you record a CD straight through, without interruption, it works great. Try to mix your own, and it just chokes. The result? I returned to the store again, and to avoid losing a customer, they agreed to replace my defunct Sharp players for a comparable Sony, even if a comparable Sony is more than $50 more! My recommendation, stick with the original until the rest catch up, even if you have to pay more. by: Anonymous On: 1999-08-30
This is a great machine! Its not the easiest to use, but once you get accustomed to it, It works like a charm. I got a friend to send me mine, and am happy I did. I hope that I dont encounter any problems like some of the other reviewers, cuz I think I am going to be using it a whole lot from now on! I also have a Sharp stereo and am also very pleased with it. Good work Sharp for making great products!! On: 1999-08-29

I bought this unit, recorded a couple of mixes with the optical line and took it with me for a walk, and it sounded great. The next day, however, I couldnt get more than 3 seconds of solid play. "UTOC ERROR" kept showing up and eventually no response at all at all. Keep all your receipts, youll need them. by: Anonymous On: 1999-08-15
My brother convinced me that spending this much money was worth it. NOt on this one. It said it was recording, said it had recorded, but did not record. I followed every little instruction perfectly, still didnt work. Returned it for my refund. At least Ill go and see if a different company (not Sharp) can make one that works. by: Anonymous On: 1999-08-15

I bought my md player/recorder and have had it for about a year now, without a single skip or error. I am really impressed with it. I take it everywhere. Even in my car, which is in desperate need of new shocks, sitting on the dash, the darn thing still never skipped. Ive dropped it while listening to it and it didnt skip or damage the unit. All the advantages of cds and cassetes put into one small disc that wont get scratched like a cd. GO OUT AND BUY ONE NOW, you WONT regret it. The only disadvantage Ive seen is that more people dont own them. On: 1999-08-09

Thats right! In the one year that I have owned this little gadget no quams no problems. I go for long walks with the little bugger on my hip and not an error or a miss of a beat. I mean outside walking, jogging on the move in the 80 to 90 dagree weather. Rain or shine the thing just wont die. The crap I put this device through would kill any cassette player or cd player on the market. This mini disc player is the best thing that came to music entertainment and I support the corporations that bring us these things 100%.This thing is the BOMB!!!!! by: Anonymous On: 1999-07-23
Bought one of these and owned it for about a month. Its a lot of fun and puts out great sound, but for $300 is it worth it? You can find it now for $249 and get a $50 rebate coupon from Sharp which will bring you down to $199, but youll need an extended warranty (a.k.a. blackmail payment) from where-ever you buy it. Like oters have said...this thing will be pre-historic in two years. And if you pay the blackmail up front you can trade it in for a new model in a year or so. (At least thats the case at Best Buy) If you want to learn more about minidisc stuff check out minidisco.com it has links to lots of MD info. Personally I took mine back and will probably end up with a CD recorder. The prices should be about the same next year, and who has a tape deck in their car anymore? The only way youll be able to play the MD in your car is with the tape adaptor, and it seems everybody these days has a CD player in the car. Then what do you do? On: 1999-07-22

sharp did make a great md player/recorder. i have used it for alot of recording and playing, and it goes everywhere with me. have had it for a few months now and it still to this date has not skipped. i mean its been used alot in rough enviroments like offroading on a jeep, driving on the roads of NYC, running and on the train to and from work, and never heard it skip once. i must have put in thousands of hours of use on it and have recorded at least 200 mds in the time i have had it. its great. love it. its like timex, it takes a licking and keeps on ticking. this thing has been through alot of rough use and no errors, problems or anything. by: Anonymous On: 1999-07-17
Ive owned this one, too. And guess what? After about one year it started skipping. And it didnt record anymore.I sent it to Sharp, and what was their answer? "Weve recycled your MD player. By the way: the MD you included is broken, too." Great! Whats the moral of the story? I have a MD collection I cant listen to, and now I have a Discman and a CD recorder. I dont know whether this is Sharps fault or just the quality you can expect from MDs; this is the only MD device Ive ever owned and I will probably ever own. by: Anonymous On: 1999-07-16
I was like a little kid with a new toy when I first got this machine.. used it once.. turned it on again 2 days later.. and I see the dreaded "UTOC Error" .. so within 1 week of the purchase.. I already had to take it into repair.. Now after the repair, the player seems to skip.. and Im not doing any kind of excruciating exercise.. Just walking with the player in my pants pocket today, during one song, the player must have skipped at least 5 times within 2 minutes. Ive read on the NET that the "UTOC Error" only occurs on models made in Japan.. so watch out!!! Too bad I didnt see read that article before I bought it, cuz if I did.. I woulda gotten a SONY.. I hope you Sharp people see this review.. by: Anonymous On: 1999-07-16
I got one of these for Christmas, and I love it. I use it to record .mp3 files off the Internet. It never skips, you can delete tracks, move tracks, etc. Ill never go back to cassette tapes, ever.My only issue is the battery, it only lasts about 6-7 hours on a full charge (even less if recording on battery power), but it recharges in a few hours, so its not too bad. Id highly recommend it to anyone. On: 1999-07-16

I was given my Sharp MD-MS702 for my 21 birthday last March, and I have used it virtually everyday since. It has not let me down, and the sound is trully incredible. I listened to several minidiscs on a longhaul flight between London and New York, and even at 35,000ft with the usual aircraft noice the recordings sounded crystal clear. With the add on AA battery pack I can listen for even longer. The edit facilities are really useful, but most of all the shear quality of the music reproduction from something so small will leave you gasping. If you only listen to one Mini-Discman make sure this one is on your list. On: 1999-07-15

It never skips, you can delete tracks, move tracks, etc. Ill never go back to cassette tapes, ever.My only issue is the battery, it only lasts about 6-7 hours on a full charge (even less if recording on battery power), but it recharges in a few hours, so its not too bad. Id highly recommend it to anyone. by: Anonymous On: 1999-07-15
I cannot fault the player at all, I have even recorded a live band in a pub and been impressed with the result. However, I had a similar problem with skipping after owning it for just over a year; I have the portable battery pack, and using it made no difference. Neither did using one of those cleaner disks. Thankfully, I had extended the warranty, and I replaced the unit no problem, this one has been working fine to date. Advice for the day; get a warranty for as long as you want to use the product. But remember that this is electronics; and in five years time, this tiny box will look so old, and well 90s, that you will want to replace it anyway. The sharp md ms702 is by far the best value in minidisc portables ever. Efficient battery operation provides hours and hours of playback and superb time for recording. Whether you need to convert optical sampling rates or make masters of your old cassettes filled with all those unreplacable tunes, this unit will fulfill all (and I do mean all) your needs! Ive used this unit on cross continent flights (sometimes recharging at airports) as well as long jogs and road trips. The 702 has never let me down and it even comes complete with a backlit remote control and lightweight lithium-ion recharageable battery. One of my favourite uses for this product is making solid portable recordings of my favourite home-made MP3 music files directly from the digital output on my computers sound card. Way to go SHARP! I was very excited when I first listened to the excellent sound quality and used the full compliment of controls on this tiny unit. (syncro-record, optical record, plus full track editing tools) However...after only a couple of months it has begun to skip badly and is basically a $300.00 paperwieght. I kept it clean, out of the sun and only played it a couple hours a day and it is completely broken. I thought the lithium-ion battery might need replacement, but I got a rude surprise when I found out they are ONLY available from Sharp via mail-order and cost **$50.00**. The optional AA battery pack is also only available from Sharp and is on back order till August (maybe). I have to wait 2 months to find out if the battey is even the problem, and if it isnt, then the thing is truly worthless after only 100 hours or so of gentle use. This is immensely frustrating because the unit is really fantastic when it is working correctly. The little remote controller is super cool, and it comes with really good headphones. In the end, it must be said that Sharp has not worked out the bugs in MD technology, and someone looking for a good value SHOULD AVOID BUYING THIS UNIT. On: 1999-07-13
