I have had my mini disk for several years and had initially used it to make backing tracks for my single act. Recently, however, I have purchased a Sony stereo mic and have begun to record "live" performances with it. It is good enough to send direct to CD. I highly recommend this versatile recorder for anyone who needs remote digital recording at an affordable price. On: 2006-07-13
Ive had my MZ-R37 for several years. Im a professional musician, working solo (vocals, electric harmonica, guitar, organ bass pedals) or with other musicians. I use the MD to record my/our live performances. I originally had rather low expectations. I just wanted to review the music. Generally I used the output of the sound reinforcement system (tho I made a lot of very good recordings with the included stereo mic). The quality is excellent. Ive been able to use many tunes recorded on the MD for CDs. Yes its THAT good.
Im not claiming this will replace a full blown Pro Tools studio with Neumann U87s and a staff of Hollywood recording engineers, producers, and such. One can truly do magic with top line gear and a highly skilled production staff in much less time. But many of the MZ-R37s recordings were good enough to be on a CD with these and not embarrass me in comparison. And thats saying a LOT for a dirt cheap pocket size recorder with 1/8th inch input/output jacks.

This is a portable Mini-Disc player with the capability to record. The unit is very small, but also very sturdy. I believe the body of the unit is metal, not cheap plastic. Do not mistake these for the cheaper Sony portable audio products that seem to be geared for teenagers. This is a sophisticated, well-made device. It comes with a folding headset, Sony Nickel Cadmium rechargeable batteries, remote control, power adapter, and an optical cable. The unit has the capability to recharge the batteries when it is plugged in to an outlet. For recordings, I suggest using the power adapter instead of running on battery power. An excellent Sony product. I highly recommend it if you can find it here or ebay. I have been using and enjoying mine for over 2 years. On: 2003-01-11
I got this MD player as my Christmas present. It didnt look very attractive and new, in terms of design. When I started to use it I realized what was hidden under its silver body panel! The sound was amazing (44.1 kHz) and the batteries lived for a good time to enjoy the music (approximately 12h with alkalines). I take it to school everyday, and swich the batteries every 2 to 2 and a half weeks. I sometimes forget that I have it with me cause its so light and compact. The Mini Disks are too very light and easy to carry. Once I ran to the bus listening to my MD, and it didnt even skip. I recommend you to buy this product. Even if its kind of old, its still good. Thank you for reading my review. :) On: 2002-10-11
This unit should come with a corded remote control attached. However many resellers dont have the remote and sell it without. Youll have a tough time controlling the unit without it. The buttons, especially the fast forward and reverse, are tough to handle and even worse the editing buttons are on the underside of the unit! I have one of these, without the remote, and learned the hard way that you really need it. NOw Im scouring the net looking for a remplacement. On: 2002-04-28
I got this as a birthday present over a year ago and I love it. This minidisc player is such a great benefit that any music lover or electronics enthusiast (sorry for the spelling) should enjoy. With this gadget I was able to record from everything and it saved me a lot of money. I didnt have to buy cds to listen to one song. I would just borrow from friends or family and record the track or tracks that I liked and return the cd to them. The sound was incredible. I no longer have to worry about not being able to listen to cds because theyre scratched, because when I put it on minidisc, its impossible for the cd inside to get scratched. Another plus is it does not skip. There are so many positives about the minidisc player that I can go on forever. Its like having a cd burner in your pocket. However despite the positives, it has its downfalls. The buttons are really small and I jammed my skip search button. It cost 50 dollars to get it fixed. I would definately recommend getting a warranty. Also this one eats batterys fast. It takes only 15 hours on 2 batterys. I think its definately great and I enjoy this player. by: Anonymous On: 2002-04-03
This is a fabulous little minidisc recorder. It performs well and seems to have all the features that you need to a good job. Dont let the size fool you. It is small, but packed with what you need. Makes great recordings. The optical feature is a major plus and this unit is very versatile. Durable, and will serve you well. Read the manual first and then walk through it step by step. The fidelity is unbelievable. The SONY brand is the one to buy. They have it all figured out and the prompts on the unit are logical. Also, get the remote control. It is easier to operate the unit overall. Its [money] , but worth it. I havent seen a product by SONY that I did not like. On: 2001-12-13
I have this md player! its great! and its fer a nice price too! My friend geoff had this MD player and he gave it to me for my birthday! HES SUCH A GREAT GUY, the MD player is so nice and portable! easy to hold and easy to use! fits almost everywhere! I love this item! On: 2001-12-12
I got this model MD as a present last Christmas and I love it for many reasons: 1.) It is sturdy yet compact. The newer models I have seen dont seem as durable as this model. 2.) I can make my own "mix tapes" thousands of times over because MDs are re-recordable without losing audio quality. Also I can take my favorite songs from CDs and put them on one disc instead of lugging around several CDs. 3.) I can record from any audio source. Download from the internet and make your own MD without investing in blank CDs. 4.) The batteries last forever, or seemingly forever. I listen on long road trips (8 hours +) and seldom need lots of extra batteries. 5.) Its so easy to use that I am able to use it. 6.) I have never had any problems with it. I have even dropped it on the ground (accidentally) a few times and nothing has been damaged on the inside, or outside 7.) Its less bulky than a portable CD player. There are a million great reasons to buy an MD player, of which the above are only a few. I dnt understand why more people dont own these. On: 2001-12-03
i own the minidisc mz-r37 for about 1 year now and i love it so much i sleep with it. i do aircraft sound effects on a lucky day you can get the sounds you want if you hang around a small airport like i do.i just completed my first cd on helicopter sounds i use it at partys this is the best thing to own i take very good care of it and log each time i use it. great for recording the thunder sounds if your lucky. i plan to buy a 2nd unit.thank you to sony On: 2001-10-15
This is by far one of the best electronic purchases that I have ever made. This model is easy and fun to use. I bought this Mini Disc player/recorder because I needed something to listen to at work, but didnt want a tape player due to the fact that one has to stop working to flip the tape all the time. I can put a lot of music and audio books on one mini disc. It is built like a tank and I can recharge the batteries without taking the batteries out. I got the recharge batteries and A/C power adapter at Radio Shack. Recording from my stereo is a snap. I cant understand why Mini Disc players and mini discs arent more accepted here in the U.S.A. The advantages mini discs have over CDs are huge. On: 2001-08-03
*Very versitile: Can record off of a cumputer, the radio, CDs, tapes, whatever. *Slim design makes it easy for me to bring along when I run. * Bad things: * The headphones it comes with has a very very very short cord (very unpractical). *I have had to get it fixed 3 times because the connection in the headphone jack. The sound becomes distorted and they have to sauder it (Not fun for someone who uses it everyday) *OH YEah MDs arent supposed to skip..it does once in a while by: Anonymous On: 2001-05-14
if u travel alot and ur always listening to music then this is the way to go its compact and its cheap to purchase blank mds sony is the creator of minidisc so it is probably the best system u will find!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On: 2000-11-15
I bought the MZ-R37 early this summer. I got a refurbished model on Ebay for a resonsable price for recording concerts over the summer. This is a great model, durable and very shock resistant. I purchased a binaural microphone after I recorded a couple shows on a cheaper mono and man what a difference. One major tip if you are starting to record with the MZ-R37 - be sure to hold the record button in place and be sure recording has commenced, I missed some songs at gigs because the recorder didnt start. Better to be safe than sorry. Anyway, this is also great for recording MP3s off of your computer just get a connection line from your sound card to the line in and you are set. You can also transfer concert recordings or band demos onto you computer if you have a recordable sound card. Great investment. Forget about MP3 players, too expensive to add memory. Minidiscs are inexpensive and far more durable than CDs also, with identical sound quality. If you are a music fan I dont know how you could live without one. by: Anonymous On: 2000-11-10
i dont know how i survived without this! i have had this unit for about six months now and have really appreciated having digital recording in such a small package. although i have made pleanty of mix discs with it, i bought it mainly for field recordings. its super slim size (its the slimmest, but not the smallest) and side facing display make it perfect for incognito recordings. i use a set of omnidirectional stero earbud mics and get no machine noise and with the auto level setting, hardly ever any signal overload. i thought that the remote would be dissappointing because it does not have a built-in display (like earlier sony models), but after you memorize the layout where you dont have to look at it, the lightweight "stick" is actually preferable. 2-position mega-bass feature kicks. only complaints: battery life could be better. it has a great "on board" recharge feature, but i found that after only a hanfull of recharges, the life was down to 50% of conventional batteries. you get about 6 hours of playback or about 2 hours of recording time on one charge. also, there is an annoying beep which accompanies any command - unlike most md players you can not turn this feature off. it is especially loud and annoying when you have it hooked up to your car stero. but dont plan on cranking this machine, because the volume only goes up to "30" (literally 30% of what youre used to on a regular walkman), which is not loud enough for me- especially with decent headphones. I just got this MD player and I really like it. The only thing that is a little anoying is the Users guide. It is kind of hard to understand it. I cant find any directions for splitting tracks. I would really need that because sometimes it is hard to press stop before the next song comes on. Over all, its a good MD player for the price. by: Anonymous On: 2000-03-21
Ive read some of the reviews that people have posted on thiswebsite, and quite frankly, theyre not true. The Sony MZ-R37 is agreat product, and price is a good deal for it. The sound quality isexceptional, as is the performance of the MiniDisc Player/Recorder as a whole. Ive had my MZ-R37 for a couple of months, and I dont agree with some of the statements that people have made about the MZ-R37.First: Someone said the metallic paint came off in the front. Yes! You know, paint will come off of anything if you take an axe to it! If you treat your MiniDisc player descently, itll be fine! Second: Sound quality is poor. I completely disagree. The sound quality is excellent! Third: The remote lacks an LCD Screen. The product doesnt come with a built in modem to download MP3s either. Deal with it! Fourth: The LCD screen is small and is hard to see from certain angles. First of all, the LCD Screen is of a normal size, and is easily readable. Yeah, maybe if the whole MiniDisc player was the size of a football the LCD screen would be too small, but you have to compare the size of the screen to the size of the product. Its definetely in propotion. All in all, two thumbs up. A+. Excellent Product. END On: 2000-03-19
If youre thinking of buying a portable MP3 player such as Diamonds Rio, think again. This product is for you. Not only can you easily record MP3 using a mini-jack cable from the back of your sound card you can easily record CDs using a mini-jack to rca cable if you have an older stereo, or use the optical cable provided for perfect digital recordings. I finally have a product with the capabilities of making a mix of CD and MP3 music on CHEAP rewritable 74 minute media. MD media costs around 2-5 dollars a disc. This item is so versatile I dont see why anyone doesnt buy it. My only concern is the lack of a LCD display on the headphone remote, but I can deal with it. I have not been able to make this thing skip no matter how hard I try. Plus its great for bootlegging concerts with a tiny little microphone attached. Buy this item, you wont be sorry at all. I recently came across the top-of-the-line sony portable minidisc recorder/player and used it for a while. my conclusions from this trial of this format are: Pros: small, lightweight, easily portable, rewritable, easy to useCons: terrible sound quality (Sony would have you believe that it produces perfect CD quality or better sound, but dont believe them, minidisc is a very low bitrate, meaning that at lower recording volumes it will sound very good, but as the recording level and frequency range increases, it becomes more and more grainy and digital sounding), bad interface, very expensive. I have an extremely high-end stereo system (Mark Levinson, Krell, B&W, rega) which I hooked this player up to, using my $15,000 Mark Levinson Digital To Analog converter, and from my $15,000 Mark Levinson CD player, made some copies, and played them back. That is about the best quality minidisc will ever be, and it sounded terrible, like a $50 Sony CD player. even with more than $70,000 worth of audio equipment behind it, it still sounded vile, harsh and grainy. Another problem with it is the digital interface it uses. they should offer coaxial digital outputs to enhance the sound quality a little bit, it isnt a big strech, especially because sony invented the system. they try to pass EIAJ optical off as a viable, high-end format. All in all, I think that you should stay with CD, even though it is large, it is not worth the huge investment to go to minidisc. if you want a portable system, but dont care about sound quality, go with MP3. by: Anonymous On: 2000-02-04
This makes listening to music on the go a joy rather than a chore. The size is small the sound quality is excellent and the recording quality is even better. I dont know why it took me so long to figure out the pros of owning an MD player, especially this one. by: Anonymous On: 2000-02-02
The MZ-R37 sony mini disc player/recorder is great! I just got it and know everything about already! Easy to use, very smart remote, and if your thinking of getting mp3 DONT! This mini Disc can record from the headphone jack of any type of player. You do have to buy a cord which cost me $4.99$ big deal. If you dont know if you should get this product or not GET IT. Also perfect for joggers and runners cause it hasnt skipped once YET! by: Anonymous On: 2000-01-30
Ive seen a couple reviews saying that you cant jog/run with this disc player. I disagree! I run with it on a treadmill and on the road and Ive never had a problem. It hasnt skipped once and the quality is fabulous! I have not been able to find a better price anywhere. You wont be disappointed! by: Anonymous On: 2000-01-18
I was torn between purchasing either a CD-RW drive for my computer, a stand alone CD-RW audio component, or a MD recorder. I took a chance and spent the money on the Sony MD Recorder, and I have been basking in the glory of this tiny digital device. The MZ-R37 is a little bigger than an audio cassette case, and is completely versatile. --Why I chose it over another type of audio recording device-- The MD is completely re-recordable. If I dont like something, I can erase it. I can create track divisions to longer songs or dialogues so that I can scan through a disc quickly. I can title songs and discs, I can erase parts of songs if I would like to, and I dont have to carry around a bulky piece of equipment. This unit is the size of a walkman, but you can record and play from it, hook the output to your stereo system and play what you have recorded over your speakers. You can record from any audio source. --The unit comes with a mini plug (headphone jack size) to digital connecting cable. Most new CD players have a digital output. However, you will probably need to go to a Radio Shack and buy a mini to RCA (aka phono jack) cable (it costs about 3 dollars) so that you can record from most home stereo components (cd players, turntables, tape decks...). I have been making wonderful sounding recordings from every audio source I can (from my CD player using both the digital and analog connectors, tape deck, turntable, the sound out port on my computer, and a mic). The quality is fantastic. I can not notice any audible differences between CDs and MDs. ALSO...if you are making live recordings of music or interviews, you can use a cheap omnidirectional mic that comes with most computers to make incredible sounding monoaural live recordings that are supreme to any cassette live recording. The price of MDs are inexpensive. Amazon has a 20 pack of blank MDs for 30 dollars, and thats pretty cheap, about the price of a blank CD (recordable only once). I am using my MD recorder to transfer records and tapes onto MDs for college. Its wonderful because I know that the quality wont deteriorate (as in a cassette tape with heavy usage), and I get the benefits of tracks and titles. The current price of this unit is 200 dollars and that is a fantastic price for an amazing piece of equipment (it retails for up to 100 dollars more...). On: 2000-01-17

The Sony Mz-R37 is easy to use and very portable. The buttons are easily accessible and the remotes editing functions make titling, deleting, moving tracks on the mini disc easy. The remote allows you to keep your mini disc in its case and still make use of track searching, stopping, and adjusting the volume. I do reccomend that you buy a cable with stereo mini jacks on both sides so you can record from devices that dont have the optical output. This will also allow you to record directly from a portable cd player. The player also includes recharble batteries that have good battery life and can be charged in the mini disc player usding the supplies power adaptor. I strongly recommend that you purchase this mini disc player from Amazon.com like I did. Amazon.com is $50 cheaper than Best Buy and even $100 cheaper than some other stores. On: 2000-01-08

When I bought this recorder I had seen a friends minidisk player/recorder by Sharp. Knowing that Sony is the better brand when dealing with mini disks I purchased htis one. It is a great deal, it plays and records well. Yet the remote leaves something to be desired, my friends remote had an LCD screen on it which not only showed the track, time, title, and so on but lit up in the dark, when you pushed a button. Ireally miss this feture on mine. However, this one problem is fairly easy to overlook once you get used to it. by: Anonymous On: 1999-12-31
The MZ-R37 is just perfect. Ive had it for 6 days and it has amazed me how such a small device can record anything I want, from whatever source I want, with a CD quality. The device itself and the MiniDiscs are perfect for traveling. Throw away your walkmans and discmans, buy the MZ-R37 here at Amazon by: Anonymous On: 1999-12-29
This MD is probably the best for your $$$ On amazon.com. I didnt buy it here, but where i got it i coulda had this one or the Aiwa FM-70 for the same price. Chose this one. I love it, GREAT to record. Batteries are still lasting a long time for me. It barely skips. I was slowy jogging it didnt skip at all. Then when i went into fast running is when it started to skip, but thats only 1 downfall. I say buy this if you want a good product and to save money. PS you can have up to 140min record time on this player, too.. Lets you record in mono. format. by: Anonymous On: 1999-12-27
The product works wonderfully for all but the family jogger. Despite the"shock resistent" description on the product, a jogger can not use this great concept (the device skips). This is disappointing given the large number of joggers. The problem of developing a useful device for joggers remains to be solved. by: Anonymous On: 1999-12-26
This product is great! I really like the ability to record anything I like and have the ability to alter it afterwards. There are so many different ways to get the music to record. I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a way to record and listen to their favorite music. Amazon.com is a great source for this player and they offer a competitive price to go with their great service. On: 1999-12-25

I recently bought a minidisk player on adivce from a friend of mine. I work proffesionaly as an event videographer. Unfortunatly, I have had lots of problems with sound. Now that I am recording in the miniDV format, I decided to get this recorder. I can just stick it up on the podium, or plug it into an existing mixer. The sound quality is great. In many ways its more convient than DAT. Several drawbacks, although it has a great feature to start a new track after 2 seconds of silence, that can get VERY annoying when you suddenly have 68 tracks and it was only a 10 minute interview. Also, why only 74 minutes? Cant you get longer?Despite my gripes this is an excellent product. Sound quality is great. I dont know what this optical cable is for, but just using the regular line is is great. by: Anonymous On: 1999-12-09
I just got this mini disc player in and tried it out. I did have to go out and get some mini discs but it is great. I just recorded wwf the music volume 4 to it and it works fine. At points, one speaker goes out for a sec. But that only happens once and I think the cd might be scratched. Great sound otherwise. I will hook my mic in and record some of my music once I get a new mic. Great system. This is the best price for this at 200. I have shopped around and 200 is the best I could find. I recomend getting it from amazon.com by: Anonymous On: 1999-12-04
I bought this minidisc recorder because my house is in london but spend quite a lot of time away with work. I also DJ using vinyl so I wanted to have copies of my stuff to take on my travels. The space saving when carrying 20 minidiscs plus player around as opposed to 20 ordinary tape cassettes and walkman is a great plus. Plus the difference in facilities and sound quality (especially when recording from a Discman with optical cable), between minidisc and oridnary cassette are enormous. Throw away your cassette recorder. Minidisc is the future of music recording. On: 1999-12-03

I wasnt bowled over by MiniDiscs when they first appeared. I heard there were some audible artifacts of the compression technology which kept these pocket-sized marvels from being a true match for CDs. And the price of the MD machines was more than I wanted to spend. Just the other day, however, I managed to score a Sony MZ-R37 portable MD recorder at an online auction, and Im here to say -- jump in, everybody, the formats fine! The truth is, Im not about to replace my CDs or cassettes or equipment. But Im a semipro drummer who wanted to get digital quality recordings of rehearsals and jam sessions in a pocket-sized unit. Well, all I can say is -- if there are any audible deficiencies of the MD format, I cant hear them, and as a musician, my ears are pretty good. Although I havent made a live recording of my band yet, I have been making test recordings all weekend, dubbing CDs of demanding acoustic music like the David Ware Quartet. The MZ-R37 makes and plays back superb recordings that I cannot distinguish from the original CDs; this despite the fact that Im not using the digital optical hookup available (cord provided). I hear no hiss, wow, or flutter, no glitches between selections, and all instruments are present and accounted for, and sound the way they should. There are no problems with the azimuth misalignments I constantly encountered with cassettes. Recordings of electronic music sound superb too; the Beatles "Come Together" sounded awesome! I did discover two things I have to get used to with the MD format. The first is the necessity of using the "END SEARCH" button if you have been listening to a recording before you resume recording; otherwise, songs get split in half and weird sequencing events occur. The second is to remember not to push PAUSE before pushing STOP at the end of a recording; every time you push PAUSE on the MZ-R37, it adds a track number. Im so used to doing that on a cassette deck so as not to introduce a glitch onto the tape between songs. I also discovered that you can make a better recording by overriding the automatic gain control and pumping up the volume, so the peaks hit the top element in the display. In terms of things I would change on this unit, I wish the buttons were a little bigger; my old fingers dont always have the easiest time zeroing in on the button required for a certain function! And I wish the MZ-R37 had a back-lit or electro-luminescent LCD panel you could see in low-light conditions. I predict Ill be pulling out my pocket flashlight on more than one occasion to check levels and disc run status! And some sort of carrying case would have been a more welcome inclusion with this package for me than the cheapo headphones or optical cable included. Live recordists will need a stereo microphone too, one that draws power from the mike input; for sound quality, compactness, and affordable price, its hard to beat Sonys PC-62 or its successor, if there is one. And that pretty much sums up the Sony MZ-R37 MD Recorder itself too! by: Anonymous On: 1999-11-12
Ideal for making customized redordings, although i think the screen should have been bigger and illuminated. I give the sound quality and the ease of use a 12 on a scale of 10. Overall its a great product and for the price it performs as well as the pricier models. by: Anonymous On: 1999-11-10
The MZ-R37 has better recording capabilities than I imagined when using the Sony digital microphone (stereo, approx. $100). The placement of the control buttons on the unit is somewhat inconvenient: however, they work well when the unit is in a small case or pocket during recording. The 40 sec anti-skip is only for sudden bumps - dont try to jog with this machine. The clooapsible headphones are a plus, and the remote is easy to use. You will need to purchase a mini to mini cord for recording from another source, unless ita a device that has an optical output. Overall, this is a great machine. On: 1999-11-09
The MZ-R37 has better recording capabilities than I imagined when using the Sony digital microphone (stereo, approx. $100). Great tool for recordings. Ive made several MASTER recordings on MDs, for transfer onto CDs. I did not find any difference in quality. Though Ive heard comments on loss in quality due to additional compression, for the type of music I deal with, I did really not see any loss in quality.A simply superb product On: 1999-11-06

I dont know why people are saying the angle on the lsd screen is hard to read, I can read mine fine. At first I thought that this had bad volume control, but i wasnt recording right. You have to record at the highest volume both on the player and the mp3 or cd player, then you get great volume! overall this is a great player, its small, good bass and good battery life. Ive had mine for a few months and I only had to change the battiers twice. by: Anonymous On: 1999-10-17
It plays excellent sound and is small. With the added feature of MEGA BASS, it seems like you are at a concert. But the buttons are small on the unit and the LCD display is small and must be looked at a good angle. But the remote is easier to use. Overall, this is a great product for people on the go. by: Anonymous On: 1999-10-15
I bought this unit because it was on sale, but I would recommend that anyone considering this unit take a look at what Sharp has to offer. For a little more money you can get a larger display (my MZ-R37s display is puny and hard to read at most angles - and it can only display 5 letters at a time), a text display on the remote control and, most importantly, both displays are back-lighted (if there was one option I would want to add to my MZ-R37, it would be this).Screen caveats aside, the unit is small enough to fit into the pocket of my jeans and I can hook it up to my Sony Discman through the optical line and walk away - in most cases it will note a new track on the CD and start a new track on the MD. Naming the tracks is sheer agony, the average song taking two minutes to title, but my friend who owns the Sharp model reports that it is even harder on his player. The remote control is well laid out, but the buttons on the control and the MD player itself are too small (my hands are on the large side, so maybe its just me). In summary: this player is awesome in terms of technology, but its aesthetics (display and buttons) need some working on. If you can stand this and can find this model for significantly less than a Sharp model, then go with it. This player should be for those on a limited budget only. Battery life is decent for a MD player. I usually have to hook up the player to the AC adapter overnight every night to keep the rechargeable batteries from dying. by: Anonymous On: 1999-09-21
Ive had mine for a month, and like it on the whole. However, there are a few things: the metallic paint wears off the front, revealing plastic underneath; inserting a disc is fiddley; the control buttons are tiny, and the LCD is less than clear unless viewed from the correct angle. But I like it a lot. It sounds great, the remote is good (has enough controls without being bulky), and the batteries last forever. by: Anonymous On: 1999-09-20
I got this minidisc player/recorder a few weeks ago and it has covered all of my needs. It comes with recharegable batteries, an optical line, and a remote. I use it all the time and it is perfect for anyone who loves great sound and has to go somewhere. On: 1999-09-19

This unit sounds great, is easy to operate and with an optional stereo microphone, makes fantastic recordings from live performances. The price aint bad either. by: Anonymous On: 1999-09-14
I have had mine for 2 weeks and really like it. I bought it for running because regular CD players are too big and can skip. Im very pleased with the sound quality and NO MUSIC SKIPPING during runs. Also like that I can pick my own mix of music to match the intensity of my exercise - it keeps me going. I had some trouble with skipping during a run when the battery was low, but as long as the battery is fully charged, it works great. The controls on the head phones are also really handy. The controls on the unit itself are a little small, but I am getting used to them. All in all a great product. I say buy the Sony - they have this technology figured out. by: Anonymous On: 1999-08-24
It is basically an up graded model of the Sony MZR-30, but not as good as the MZR-50.
