Not worth the money     On: 2004-06-02

Well this is one cool looking piece of a/v equipment. But that is about it. I put this receiver up against my Onkyo which runs my home theater. The remote on the Kenwood is great for all those different components that youve mixed and matched over the years to build the perfect home theater, including IR commands for my Stewart film screen and Curtain control. But in every other category, it fell way off the mark. I used a typical 5.1 channel THX Certified speaker setup and a high end laserdisc and dvd player for sources. The Kenwood didnt have much of a problem routing video but audio was not good. At higher levels, FM channel bleed could be heard coming from the speakers. The amplifiers strained to push through programing material at higher dBs especially when all speakers were active. Eventually, the unit failed to even produce sound at all, barely spewing a whisper of what it should have been cranking out. Overall, I would give it zero stars but the remote and the fact that the unit is visually appealing redeem the 2 star rating. Save your money for a Sony or Pioneer if youre in this price range. At least they are more reliable.
Kenwood vr 2080 excellent DTS

The system is really loud and has excellent sound on all channels when in DTS 5.1 (DVDs and Digital Cable). You can really appreciate the bass. Also, the tuner is very accurate and I rarely get interference, something common in all other radios in my house.

Great sound but hard to set up. Looks great
Great sound, but lots of work to get to it

Ive had the 2080 for two months. Its taken an while to get it to work, but the sound and functionality is great.

The manual leaves a lot to be desired. The remote is an unintuitive challenge to figure out. The unit doesnt include the SVHS inputs that the higher end models have.

Kenwood wants you to be happy and offers phone support and a web site. The web site isnt great. Like the remote, its hard to figure out.

But when youve finally gotten it to work, the sound is really magnificent. If you buy it, get it to work, and have good speakers, you will enjoy the sound.

The good or bad news is that only you will be able to figure out how to work it. So if youre a control freak on your equipment, have no fear, you will have no challengers.

Great looks, mediocre component....     On: 2000-01-28

I bought the Kenwood VR-2080 about 5 months ago. I have to admit that it does a lot of really cool things, but then theres a lot of bad things about it to. The remote for instance, Its really cool how you can use the LCD screen to control everything, but what good does it do you you if it takes you a minute before it actually establishes a 2-way connection with the reciever, it doesnt work past 18 feet or so, I really wish I hadnt bought this reciever when I did cause I saw the great price... Right now, I have no idea whats wrong with it, but no sound comes out. I think theres a short inside one of the amps or something. If you want a good reciever, dont buy this one, go with one of the Pioneer ones of comparable value.
My VR-2080 is a year old     On: 2000-01-21

I purchased my VR-2080 Kenwood receiver more than a year ago. My first Kenwood was a KRV 9090 prologic I purchased 12 years ago. Kenwood builds them to LAST! Never had a problem with them. My 9090 model went to my son and still can blow away many stereo receivers sold today! The remote on the Kenwood 2080 is conversation piece. Anyone who sees it is amazed at what it can do. I think its worth much more than the $799.00 today as I it was a year ago! Buy it and you will be amazed of the quality and sound it produces.
Great Receiver     On: 1999-11-23

I purchase this receiver a few days ago and I am impressed with the sound quality. I am also amazed at the technological advances of the LCD remote. I would suggest this prduct to anyone in the market for a new receiver, but be prepared to read, this receiver has a great deal of advanced functions....
