WORKS LIKE A CHARM. DON'T LET OTHER REVIEWERS FOOL YOU.     On: 2003-01-30

My first review of a minidisc player was done in 2001. It was for the MZ-R70 blue model.

I have bought this MZ-R55 2nd hand, which is in fact, over 3 years old. The unit (recorder and all supplies) work like a charm. It works better than the MZ-R70, for its faster when skipping tracks, and it runs the TOC EDIT faster than my other model, which is an MZ-R50 silver model. Yes, I have 3 minidisc players. May I say, even though many people have rated the MZ-R55 down, I love it. All you have to do is have a little patience, and take care of the Unit.

I like the backlit remote, which is excellently handy when you dont want to flip the player/recorder in and out of your pocket every two minutes to raise the volume or change song.

The units shell takes a lot more abuse than that of the MZ-R70. The paint doesnt come off as easy, and even though the unit may be a bit heavier, at least Im more aware of the fact that theres something fragile in my pocket. I think that 4 hours of battery life is halfway decent if not acceptable. What I mean, is that 4 hours is fine by me. I dont go out much, and that leaves less ware&Tear on the unit.

Let me tell you...the bass in the collapsible headphones is outstanding. These headphones sport the best digital bass that I have ever heard. May I also add, you dont have to turn the volume up too high, to drown out the exterior sound around you. I find myself not having to put the volume up past 50%.

The AA battery compartment is handy to have when your NH-14WM (Nickel-Metal Hydride Battert) loses its charge. Just today I went out with the compartment attached, and voila, its there when I need it.

My MZ-R55 is the silver model. Even though I bought this unit second hand, it seems to have withstood a lot of time, and everything I expected it to be, it has lived up to its SONY name.

The carrying pouch is genuninely handy to have, if youre going out in the harsher of climates. That way, it wont get wet or humid. Another thing, the headphones, being as short as they are, are practical for someone who always puts their mini-disc player in their shirt pocket, with or without the remote. The only thing wrong with that, is that you cant really turn your head too far from in front of the unit, or you will be pulling on the wire.

For the 3 Volt power supply adaptor, I am happy about it, because its the same voltage as for my MZ-R70. They both share adaptors, and one is always near the stereo for playing through big bass speakers. One is always there for the personal listening pleasure at my desk.
The whole shebang comes in a neat little rectangular box, which is great for storing, and great for placing my other mini-disc players and their accessories when not in use.

I would recommend you go on an internet site for SONY mini-disc players, to print out their service manuals for each individual model. I have a manual printed out for each of my 3 units. Kind of comes in handy when you know a little about electronics.

I am happy with this product, and would recommend this to anyone, even those fussy people who nag about every little problem they encounter.

Hope this review has helped you.

replaces tape recorders     On: 2002-06-12

Normal MDs are basically a novelty whose charm wears off the second you try to actually record one. If you want to record a MD at CD quality, you need a CD player with an optical output, which is not common, an optical cable (sold separately) and you must be willing to sit for the entire duration of the CD without so much as bumping the recorder. On the R-55, the unit is quite heavy, especially if the AA battery pack is attached, which is constantly because the rechargeable is weaker than my grandma on morphine.

Despite all this, the MD has some good qualities. Theyre virtualy indestructable, and you get surprisingly good sound quality. The edit and delete functions are fantastic, making compilations simple to create and edit. Straight CD rips are easy as well, if youve got the time. However the coolest feature I found was the microphone. You can just plug an ordinary pair of headphones into the microphone jack, press record and listen to your drunken antics or anything else anytime you want, even separate the night into different tracks.

If youre looking to replace that old walkman this is for you, but stick with a discman or MP3 player otherwise.

it serves it's purpose     On: 2001-12-15

Ive had my mini-disc for about a year and a half. I like it because I can hook it up to my home stereo, and also play it in my car (with cassett adapter) and its got great sound. The part about the batteries is so true.., that is one drawback. Ive recorded over 80 disc, and just about all of them have excellent quality. Ive never listened to another MD so I dont know if there is a difference in quality of sound. Also you do have to crank up the volume to get good sound if your using it as a walkman. It wont blow you away...but its alright as a walkman.
Overall A Quality Product

This player/recorder plays and records very well, is small and lightweight and compact, and looks damn cool. I only have 2 beefs with it: the battery life is terrible, only about 3 1/2 hours using only the rechargable and about 8 with the unsightly battery attacement, which also adds a lot of weight, and it does not have a very loud sound output. I am constantly listening to it with the volume all the way up and am still having trouble hearing only the music.
Other than the battery life, I would definately recommend this product. I bought a PC link for mine and that records just fine, as does the stereo recording method. I also think the remote is quite spiffy if youre keeping the player in your pocket or backpack etc.
great     On: 2001-06-01

i take several months to decide what minidisc i should buy, i bought de mz-r55 and im very happy with my decition, it has been a year and a half since it belongs to me and i have nothing to complain about it. i had recorded several blanks, like 50, with any problems. i love the remote control. i love it size. i take it anywhere. the only thing that you must be aware is to have batteries. if youre prepared for that, then you can listen to your music with an excellent sound quality anytime. i love to go to my friends flats and record a disc if i like it, or only some songs. you can do anything!!!!!!!
awesome     On: 2000-09-23

IVE HAD ONE FOR 9 MO. ITS THE BEST COOLEST THING I EVER OWNED. IT DOES ANYTHING YOU COULD WANT IT TO DO. ITS REALLY REALLY SMALL. ITS EVEN FUN TO OPEN. YOU HAVE TO BUY ONE JUST REMEMBER TO ONLY RUN IT ON NIMH BATTERIES OR DONT EVEN BUY IT THE MONEY FOR THE BATTERIES AND CHARGER YOULL SAVE IN THE FRST FEW MONTHS YOU USE IT. YOULL BE SORRY LATER IF YOU BUY A DIFFERENT MODEL!!!
a pleasing little thing that sounds good     On: 2000-09-20

At the time that I bought this, it was the top of the range portable MD player, and you could tell by the price! That said, however, I was absolutely delighted with the sound, as well as the features. Ive never actually used it for recording, since I also bought a big box minidisc to add to the hi-fi at home, but just having the feature there is handy in case you want to surrepticiously record someone elses CD in their home (I think youd be crazy to use this machine as your only recorder. Get a proper recorder! This is just for listening on the move!).

Admitedly, the battery time is a bit short, but I always use the extra battery case, and can go for days or even weeks before needing new batteries. I also changed the earphones, since I reckon that youre better off with a more expensive pair that are more comfortable, and give better sound. Ive had no trouble with my machine, and Ive been using it regularly for over a year.

All in all, this little machine sounds really good (a lot better than tape, and indistinguishable from CD), loooks really cool, and has all the features that any nerd, sorry, technophile, could possibly want. If you can find it at a reasonable price, go ahead and get it.

Pros and Cons of the MZ-R55
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-07-09

Ive had the MZ-R55 for quite a few years (I went to asia to get it when it first came out) and I can say that I have fully utilized in every aspect possible.
PROS:
1. First obvious pro is the fact that it is a minidisc player/recorder. If you need more information about the latter look up what a minidisc exactly does.
2. Its small size and ease of placing it in your pocket when one is on the go.
3. Headphone/Remote control is very useful esp. when the MZ-R55 in concealed in someones pocket.
CONS:
1. As previously stated in the other reviews, the battery life is lacking. Of course this can be compensated by adding the additional battery pack. This adds a significant size to the MD.
2. It is on the heavier side of minidisc player/recorders. The newer ones feel like a feather!
3. It still skips when I try running with it in a loose pocket. When it is held in place it wont skip.

I personally think that this Minidisc is well worth the investment if this is what you are looking for. However if you want something where you can travel and dont want to constantly use the battery pack, I wouldnt recommend this product. But you wont mind using the battery pack this is definitely the best MD out there.

So many people are bad-mouthing mini-disk players these days because of the battery life and size...spoilt whiners, have they forgotten that only a few short years ago the best portable sound quality was from a cd-player the size of their head?...Fact is that this is no longer the smallest one on the market, so what? It is still small enough to fit in your shirt pocket and not bulge, and the 4 hours of battery life is more than adequate (if you plug into these for more than four hours at a time, you have way too much spare time). The sound is excellent, but unless you use the optical cable (which, contrary to what some people say, IS supplied with the unit) to get the digital sound from your source, be prepared for a recording not too much better than a regular tape. BUT you can use this unit to record mp3s, soundfiles and all sorts of stuff off the net as well. Most of all, it is extremely easy to use, it virtually tells you how to operate it!

And now, with the "90" model out, this one is way cheaper ... . Great package, great price...

A Great Price, A Great Unit
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-06-19

I bought this Minidisc player about three months ago and have found nothing but great features about it. Its light, durable, sounds great and is selling at an outstanding price. Ive been able to drastically expand my music collection from both CD and computer. The sound quality is amazing. The only drawback is the life of the rechargable battery. Ive found fully charged it lasts about four and a half hours. This hasnt been a problem for me yet. Although a short length of battery, I have yet to listen to my player for four and a half straight hours. Reccomended!
A step down from its predecessor     On: 2000-06-18

Junk! Absolute junk!

The MZ-R55 looks and feels great - it fits into just about any tiny pocket! It has a neat remote control with a nice backlit LCD screen. Unfortunately, thats about where it all goes downhill.

Battery life sucks. If youre using the rechargeable chewing gum battery that it comes with, youll be lucky to get through 2 discs before you hear that awful loud beep telling you that the battery has died ... AGAIN! If youre using the optional 2 x AA alkaline batteries, you might get through about 3 discs. Hell, if youre recording something, dont even bother, if what youre recording is likely to go for more than an hour. Gone are the days when you could play your minidisc for 12 hours straight, as you could with the previous model.

When you hook up the MZ-R55 to your hifi, the sound comes out a lot softer than other music sources. Ive tried it with other MD decks, CD players, etc, and they all sound a lot louder than the MZ-R55.

The MZ-R55 doesnt seem to be able to take small vibrations very well. It does alright with big, sudden bumps, but when youve got it seated on the passenger seat in the car and youre going over a slightly bumpy road for a continuous period of time, itll start to jump, and jump regularly.

Now to the functionality of the MZ-R55. You cant program tracks. Its difficult to edit song titles for your tracks as theres no wheel - you have to rely on the up and down buttons.

Just dont bother with the MZ-R55 - youre better off going for the older or newer model. Size isnt everything - Id much rather have a bulky MD that plays and plays, rather than a tiny toy whos battery wont last a 2 hour car journey.

Happy with the MZ-R55     On: 2000-06-11

Ive had the recorder/player for about three months and find that it works perfectly for me.

The sound is great at home with my Sennheiser 540 over the ear headphones, and it can play through a sound system. I carry it everywhere and play it with high quality Sennheiser ear-buds whenever there is a free moment. (The Sennheisers are a bit cheaper than the high end Sonys and sound as good.) Having good sound wherever you are is a great plus.

The battery problems mentioned by others can be solved if you alternate recharging two of the Sony batteries. That way, one is always fresh. Each seems to last 3 to 4 hours. To tell the truth, I wouldnt want to have it in my ears more than three hours at a time anyway.

Agreed that titling is a pain. Life would be easier if you could type them in from a computer. Yet, there is enough time to input the titles on the first listen. The drawback is that after all the tedius effort, Im reluctant to record over the track.

Two MZ-R55 and one MDS-PC1(midi disk deck with computer soft
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-05-31

I purchased the first MZ-R55 and had to also get a MDS(mini disk deck/editor with computer interface and software) for its optical output. The second was purchased because the first was under repair(three weeks). I have noticed many sonic dropouts on playback and I am trying to find out why. Apart from these hickups, I find the MZ-R55 quite useful.

NOT A BAD LITTLE MD PLAYER, BUT IT"S GOT A FEW FLAWS     On: 2000-05-28

My r55 is my workhorse. Ive used it to archive all my all tapes LPs, and even some of my badly scratched CDs. Now I dont have to worry about messing up my music collection; MDs are relatively cheap compared to losing irreplaceable, out of print records and cherished CDs. I also use my portable to conduct interviews (with the sold-seperately microphone); I get 148 minutes of playback in mono mode! My r55 is almost always in use on my way to, at, and coming home from work. I usually hook it up to my stereo and record a couple of CDs for skip-free playback the next day. Ive also gotten creative and taken samples of speech off DVD movies (example Taxi Driver) to include in my custom mixes. For everyone considering an mp3 player, you should know that an MD player can be hooked up to a computer to record ANY type of sound files (wav., streaming, RealAudio), not just mp3s, in addition to its other format recording capabilities. There are some noteworthy drawbacks to this particular model however, although I think the lack of a jog dial shouldnt be the big deal some people make it. Resourceful owners such as myself have found that the "twist top" of the stick remote serves as a makeshift jog dial and performs adequately when used for labeling tracks and albums. One serious problem, however, is battery life. Ive gotten the full 6 hrs. promised in the owners manual only when typing at my computer, but for jogging, recording, and inline skating, Ive found the battery life is drastically reduced to about an hour. With the AA battery pack, you get about 12 hours of playing time, but the added bulk makes the r55 the same size as the r30. As for some people claiming that the r55 is too fragile, Ive dropped it a couple of times from a four foot height and never had any problems. I can only suggest that you buy a Case Logic if youre planning to do all kinds of physical things with it. I would reccommend this model to anyone with a large existing music collection who loves to make mixes and recordings to listen to everywhere, as well as aspiring journalists and would-be bootleggers. To the casual music fan, one without the time or desire to be constantly making comps, I wouldnt recommend the MiniDisc format at all due to the low availability of pre-recorded MDs in the U.S. The only place Ive ever seen mastered MDs on sale is the Virgin Megastore, and even then it was a small selection (mostly imports). I would also advise anyone planning on taking thier portable to the extreme in terms of physical activity against the r55; get the r90 instead. its smaller and has a much longer battery life.

Not the one to get     On: 2000-05-25

So, youre interested in a Minidisc, eh? Good choice! Minidiscs are just great, beat the pants off CDs and MP3 for portable music. After learning to transfer MP3s to a Minidisc, Ill never go back again, I have seen the light!

Now, about this particular player. The size is wonderful, if you have had one of the larger players, you just wont believe the size of this. It is small and light and wonderful to carry around. However, as others have mentioned, battery life sucks. There really are better choices. I personally went with the MZ-R90, and it is superb. Tiny, tiny recorder/player with excellent battery life and great features. Unfortunately, Amazon.com does not carry it yet, but there definitely are places you can get them now with a US warranty. Check around.

Minidisc     On: 2000-03-14

This player is pretty good. Not really worth the money and the way things are going everything will be on memory sticks of some kind. I wouldnt buy this unless you have money that you dont know what to do with. If you do purchase this product be careful of the remote is a peice of junk and breaks easily.
Good MD player but the price is too high     On: 2000-02-25

The only bad thing about the MZ-R55 is the life of the battery. The rechargable bubble gum stick battery only last for 4 hours. Ifyou want a better MD player made by Sony, wait for the MZ-R90 or the MZ-R91. They both cost around $350 and are coming to the US very soon. Probably before March.
Agree with David on this product
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-02-23

The MZ-R55 is probably a good product, but not the best, nor the lightest, smallest player available. Ive bought mine in Japan, the MZ-R90, and its smaller, lighter, and has a longer lasting battery life. and it looks better too. The size is slightly smaller, but then it really cant get any smaller than the size of the discs, can it? I would definietly wait for the MZ-R90.
Better wait     On: 2000-02-11

This unit it nice but dont believe the title of the smallest MD recorder in the world, because its not. If you wait for another month or two you can buy the New Sony MZ-R90. The MZ-R90 blows this unit out of the water. But if you are too impacient to wait, get it straight from japan like I did.
A good MD device
by: Anonymous    On: 1999-12-14

Its really light, the design is very nice. the sound is good and it doesnt skip at all, but the headphones are horrible (if you buy this, buy a good headphones too) and the volume of a non optic output recording is very low comopared to a volume of a normal cd player... thats bad. still its a good device.
Great Md Player     On: 1999-12-08

This is a great mini dosk player. the rp 55 was a great buy. It has great sound quality and the features are top notch. I would have to say though, you have to be careful about dropping it. It is small and fragile. In my opinion this is the best player out.
NOT for an active lifestyle     On: 1999-12-06

If you want this unit to go out biking or blading or running, you are out of luck. I bought mine last May; by the end of Summer, and after a couple of accidental normal pulls the headphones stop working. At the juncture of the cable and the plug from the remote the inner cables became exposed. Then I dropped the unit from a 3 feet hieght and it stopped working all together. Im really sorry I bought this thing.

Reality Check     On: 1999-11-30

Ive read the other comments on this unit, and I have to say that they dont provide you prospective buyers with a very accurate view. Ive used the Sony MZ-R55, owned a Sony MZ-R50, and own an Aiwa AM-F70 so I can easily compare this unit to others. The MZ-R55 may currently be the smallest unit in the US, but thats really all it is; what you do have is no battery life (4hrs) and a lack of features (more on that later). The Sony MZ0-R50 may have been large but at least it ran for more than twice the time of the R55, and the Aiwa AM-F70, may be slightly larger than the R55, but fully loaded it works for a whopping 30hrs. Now for the (lack of) features...no jog dial (very useful for titiling), no progammable play, and no backlighting on the unit itself. Im sorry to bash this unit so badly, but those are the facts. On the upside, it is currently the smallest portable MD player/recorder (until something like March when the Sony MZ-R90 comes to the US) and hey, its made by Sony!

P.S. Both the Aiwa and the R50 have jog dials and longer play time. The Aiwa also has main unit backlighting (not only on the remote), and programmable play (true, this feature is somewhat useless on an MD). And guess what? Both players/recorders are much cheaper than the Sony.

not too shabby!     On: 1999-11-27

Not too fragile! Ive dropped mine from 3 feet onto heaps of surfaces and it still works like a charm! Anyway, minidisks are too expensive at the moment. Wait 5 or 6 months till they go down then buy a system. Take it from me. I bought mine a year ago
I love this thing!
by: Anonymous    On: 1999-11-22

The MZ-R455 is the best purchase Ive made in a LONG time. The sound is great, its VERY easy to record and edit with, and I havent managed to make it skip yet (I have not been running with it; the toughest test has been some fast, rugged-terrain hiking). Its so light you barely feel it in your pocket.

Enhancements Im planning to get: an MP3 converter that will download MP3s from your compuer so you can record them to discs, and a microphone.

An excellent Portable Md unit!
by: Anonymous    On: 1999-11-16

I really enjoy my MZR-55 a whole lot. I mainly take it to the gymn regularly, but of course I take it many places with me. It has great resistance to shock, it never misses a beat. It is built very solid (Im surprised by others who have reviewed this and dont think so, it is solid!) The sound quality is excellent, I couldnt be happier. The battery life is sufficient for my use as well. Ive had this unit since June. I highly recommend it.
WAY TOO FRAGILE
by: Anonymous    On: 1999-11-10

Ive been using it for about 6 months, and I love the sound quality and everything about it.....except its duribility. I dropped it about three feet to a carpeted floor, and now it skips horribly. (hopefully sony will redeem their warranty)
Super CD Player........as long as you don't exercise with it     On: 1999-11-07

This is one of the best CD players I have ever owned. It makes excellent copies when recording your own CD and the quality of sound on the playback is excellent! However, I can only give it 3 stars because when jogging with it - the main reason I bought it - it skips constantly. It can play nonstop for 20 minutes and then skip for the next 20 minutes. I have tried to wear or hold it every way possible when running and havent found a solution yet. But if youre looking for a mini-cd that you can make your own CDs with and have a small player with great sound to carry around.....this is the one to own!
SIZE AND WEIGHT MAKE IT QUITE DESIREABLE.
by: Anonymous    On: 1999-10-26

I USE IT TO RECORD OLD LPS AND CDS. IT IS SO EASY TO CARRY IN MY SMALL PURSES. I BOUGHT TWO OTHERS. ONE FOR MY DAUGHTER AND ANOTHER FOR A FRIEND. WE ALL WISH THERE WERE MORE PRERECORDED MUSIC BY CURRENT ARTISTS. DO YOU CARRY ANY? IT SEEMS TO ME THAT IF SONY AND/OR OTHER COMPANIES MAKE THESE UNITS, THEY WOULD/OR SHOULD MAKE IT EASIER TO PROCURE PREREDCORDED MINIDISC. IF YOU ARE AWARE OF ANY PLACE THAT I MIGHT PURCHASE THESE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. THIS IS THE ONLY REASON I DID NOT RATE IT HIGHER.
It Has a Pretty Good sound.
by: Anonymous    On: 1999-10-23

I have a Sharp MS-722, and I bought a Sony MZ-R55. In my opinion the Sharp MS-722 has the same type of sound of the Sony MZ-R55. The Sharp is cheaper and has the same quality sound as the Sony MZ-R55!!!! The only difference is the weight of the MD.
Advice from a norwegian outdoorer.

I think this product stinks. This is a to fragile player. If you, like me, acctually take this outdoors, you will be amazed over how few real beatings it can take.

I bought this model from my electronics store, and I have to say that it is excellent. Not only do I use it to record music off of my CDs, but some of my favorite scenes from my DVD movies that I have. I have had if for a few months and have had zero problems with it.

I would highly recommend this product to anyone who is thinking about getting a MD Player/Recorder.

Excellent machine, records from non-digital sources to produce a very high quality of sound. All my old records and cassettes are now safety stored away and Im listening to a better quality re-play on the mini-disk. If you have old LPs and cassettes that you treasure, buy one and listen to your classic sounds regularly and without worry of damage.

Great things come in small packages!

Talk about great things coming in small packages, this thing is amazing! I purchased my R55 at Best Buy about 3 months ago and when I saw it on here, I just had to say something about it. I think it is the best recording method for portable devices - EVER.

The quality is better than audio tape by far, and the recording length of the disks (60, 74, or 80 minutes) surpasses that of most tapes too. When I originally bought this unit, I looked into its specifications for a long time trying to decide between the R37 and the R55 and a Diamond RIO Portable MP3 Player.

I love MP3s, as most people who are "into" audio do, but I found the lack of the ability to change data without a computer on the RIO was troublesome. I had to be able to flip discs, so that I could listen to it on long car rides - the 64MB of the RIOs memory could only hold about 70 minutes of music... then a computer was needed to change the data in the 64MB. TERRIBLE! I needed the removable discs!

Then came the R33... I decided against this because it was just too big. I love the compact size of my R55, and it was worth the extra money. Now I take my R55 everywhere - I have about 15 mixes of my favorite music, and 2 or three blanks in my case all the time, so I can record classes and such (Go Purdue!!!) In all, the best audio recorder / player out there today!

awesome player, no batteries though

it is a very good player with very good anti-skip protection, it records well, it is small, the remote is cool BUT it has horrible battery time.... only 4 hours from the fully charged battery.... if u buy it, buy at least 2 extra batteries for it
For Audiophiles, this is the only unit that will due.

I have had 3 different sony mini-disc portables.

If you are going to buy only 1 unit ( I have a full deck and this portable ) youll be frustrated with anything less than this one. Thats because the control placement for editing are well designed.

If you have two units ( 1 deck and 1 portable ) you should have this as part of you portable. I bought the sony bundle first ( the deck and portable unit ). The problem here is you cant record or edit with the portable. I real bummer if you go over to your friends place and hear something youve gotta have. Not to mention if you need to record a meeting or a lecture, youll be out of luck if youve bought the sony bundle.

I run with this unit and it will skip only about 3 times over 8 miles of terrain.

The other nice thing about this is it small. Fits in you shirt pocket. If youll be editing while your jogging like I do, the add on battery pack that holds an additional 2 AA is a nice feature.
