i give it a 5 star because it gets great range. i measured it once and it got 5 and a half miles with hills. this radio exceads the ordinary radio by far. i have one and my dad has one and we can talk back and forth 2 miles with some obstructions. i think that the batteries work a very long time, ive gotten 5 hours out of them with the rechargable batteries. i got 2 mile radios about 4 christmases ago and they made barley half a mile. these are very good radios and i would recomend them to anyone. ....There is no reason or advantage to owning one of these radios. If someone is looking seriously at GMRS they will be terribly disappointed with this radio for following reasons: No removable antenna. No provision for an external antenna that is legal on GMRS. Battery life is pathetic. Actual output power is only .99 watt making it a sad improvement over most FRS radios. Communicating with legacy GMRS systems will prove frustrating and almost impossible in most cases. Case construction is very poor. This radio will break. It is not a 5-mile radio as advertised. It is NOT an FRS radio. It has only the first seven channels used by FRS. If you operate the VoxBox on FRS channels you MUST have an FCC license and you must use the call sign issued to you by the FCC. It is for personal use only. You can only use it in the USA on the ground. Audiovox says right on the packaging that these radios are excellent for municipalities and job sites. GMRS is a radio service for personal licensees. Businesses and government agencies have not been eligible to use these channels since 1987. The marketing message on the outside of the bubble-pack places unsuspecting customers in jeopardy of violating FCC rules and subject to heavy FCC fines. It is illegal to use the VoxBox GMRS radio in other countries. The VoxBox is NOT an FRS radio. You cannot use the VoxBox in Canada even on the first seven GMRS Interstitial (FRS) channels. You can be fined and/or arrested if caught using your GMRS radio anyplace other than the United States. Hope that helps, Allen by: Anonymous On: 2001-06-21
This is the best radio I have used. I live in the mountains and we use these for hunting, hiking and skiing. We used to have FRS and did not get the range we needed. Battery life is great and there is little static. We can get up to 2-3 miles range in the mountains and even further in open areas. My neighbor has Motorola and she is going to get some of these after trying ours out. On: 2001-05-24
I use these two ways on the job. Most of the time I can get ten miles out of them, unless im in the mountions im lucky to get two miles. they are very rugged, and unles their is some bad abuse they hold up very good. I dont use the VOX cuz if there is any wind at all it will transmit, and besides makeing the person on the other end mad at you it runs the battries dead. but over all this is a good unit. In short, this radio specs are misleading. There are plenty of good features that comes with the radio. The the radio is not up to specification listed. The radio advertise output of 2W ERP, with test equipment I can only measure about .75W. using the included NiMH batteries. Good part about that is it will not drain the batteries as fast as expected.NOTE: A GMRS license is require and that cost another $85. It defeats the purpose of getting a higher power radio service like GMRS. Mind as well spend the money and get a real GMRS radio like the Kenwood TK-3101 or not spend the money and get a plain FRS radio for less money. by: Anonymous On: 2001-01-02
I own a pair of both the Motorola FR60 and the Audiovox GMRS1525. Fisrt off I live in a regular developed town you would find anywhere. No hi-rises or anything like that. Motorola makes a great radio. Incoming messages are so crisp and clear and I have yet to get a static filled transmission. The only problem is I couldnt get the range needed. The Motorola, which is a "2 mile" radio gets just shy of a half mile and then there is nothing. No faint signal, no static, nothing. I received as a gift a set of the Audiovox GMRS1525 "5 mile" radios and I can get about a mile before the breaking up and static is so bad you cant receive an audible message. Even at a half mile there is a considerable amount of static, somthing you never get on the Motorolas. Unless you are living in the flat wide open plains of the midwest I would advise that you try someone elses radios first or keep the receipt and know the return policy from where you bought them. They may work fine but then again may not give you near what you hope for. I give the Audiovox 2 stars because of the transmission quality being far less than the cheaper 2 mile Motorolas when tested at the same time, same distance. I also think struggling to get a mile is not what a consumer expects when hyped as 5 mile radios. These Audiovox radios should be labeled "up to 2 miles, and in optimum cases you may experience up to 5 miles." Dont expect miracles, you might not get them. On: 2000-10-30
I have yet to see another FRS/GMRS radio built like the Audiovox 1525. Its range capability alone outclasses even the more expensive Talkabouts, Walkabouts, whatever! We just came from a vacation at the Subic Bay Resort (ex-naval base) which has mountains, forests, beaches, a golf course and any other kind of terrain you can think of. Our large family usually splits up and go their own ways. In one typical morning, I could be in the beach with kids and still get to talk -clearly- to my wife and her sisters who are out shopping in the duty-free malls 4-5 kilometers away. On the other hand, my in-laws (using other brands)who were out in the golf course always had a hard time reaching the others in the club house just about a kilometer and a half away! Even the sleek and solid design of the GMRS-1525 makes it a better choice than the others which look more like toys. Ive handled similar brands and noted all their features (i.e. channel scan/lock, VOX, rechargeable batts, etc.), but "ounce-for-ounce" I can really say that the pair I have is superior.
