This is a terrific digital camera. Its very easy to use and handle (not big and clunky) The pictures are great! The camera is an overall value, I would recommed to anyone as a starter camera. On: 2002-02-22
Look, if you dont know anything about electronics, photography, cameras in general, or computers, then NOTHING you get will be "simple to use." But, if you take the time to read the manual once or twice to try to use the instrument correctly, then you can find value in uncommon places. For instance, the Dimage 2300, a mere 2.3 megapixel camera, which takes great photos for the resolution and the money (Ive seen worse, less reliable quality from the FinePix at much higher resolutions, and at nearly 3x the price). Read the manual, learn about white-balance - which can be manipulated to take STUNNING photos if you know what youre doing - learn about the variety of exposure settings, understand the machine, and you will have great photos. As for some of the issues raised in these reviews: 1) install the software with a careful attention to the instructions, reboot, connect the cable to the computer and camera, turn the camera on to PC mode, launch the software. If you wait too long doing something else, it will auto-power-off -- close the software, turn the camera back on, and try again. Simplicity. 2) DONT USE THE LCD ALL THE TIME AND THE BATTERY LIFE WILL BE FINE. And remember to drain the included NiMH rechargeable batteries COMPLETELY, or they wont hold a complete charge the next time around and battery life will plummet. Drain them completely every time and youll be fine. 3) Any camera will take dark pictures if you dont know what your doing. Learn about exposure, and what the Dimage does to regulate it. Does the machines need to do all of our thinking for us? If you learn about situations that create dark or over-bright photos, then youll recognize them before they ruin your shots and you can compensate. You be intelligent: dont rely on the camera to be intelligent for you. 4) Buy a bigger memory card: even at the standard resolution the 2300 takes good quality photos, and you can take about 35 of them on the included 8 MB card; but a bigger one gives you more options for more photos - better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Practice common sense, try to learn the instrument and learn what to expect from it, and will be VERY pleased with yourself and with it. The Dimage 2300 is a great value and capable of great amateur quality photos that some of the big-boy high-end cameras envy. On: 2002-02-01
Ive read a lot of reviews about this particular product and ive read that many people have problems transfering pictures into their computer. Although i found that aspect to be quite simple the real weakness of this camera is the flash. This camera is virtually useless at night. Unless the place is well lit at night you can forget about taking pictures. During the day it takes pictures pretty well. The macto feature of this camera is also pretty good. On: 2001-10-23
I enjoy this camera. And mine works with Windows Millenium just fine. I got the 64MB memory card and I have NEVER filled it up, let alone found out how many it holds. I always have 99+ displayed. It takes very nice pictures, and has nice features. The only negative is that it only zooms to 1.4 x and 2.0x and the quality then gets poor. But everything else is great. On: 2001-07-01
The Minolta Dimage 2300 is not compatable with Windows 2000 Millenium Edition. If you purchase a new computer or update your Windows 98 you cannot upgrade the camera software. It just isnt available! On: 2001-04-16
Received the camera from UBid yesterday, read the manual last night and was out shooting Easter pictures with ours and neighbors kids today. All I can say is that what excellent pictures it took. To minimize the picture size, around 100 KB, the camera was set at half size (800 x 600) and standard image mode. The camera was very easy to use, similar to my old Minolta X700 without the auto-focus.Since its my first digital camera, so I have no other camera to compare it to. But I am still very impressed with it, especially when I only paid... for it. On: 2001-03-04
In my last review...I mistakenly typed in ISO setting for the light settings, which has been pointed out and slapped me in the face. I am not a professional photographer, nor do I intend to give the impression that I am one. I did take the time to read the owners manual, many times in fact. The point remains that this camera is a lousy investment. It is nearly impossible to download pics using the USB port, and I am not about to try the serial port...what would be the use? I sat at my computer one night for 4 hours trying to download pics, using fresh batteries, tried the AC adapter, and reinstalling the software. I am going to buy another camera from a different manufacturer, and I vow never to buy Minolta products again. Spend a little more, avoid the headaches. On: 2001-02-27
I have read all the reviews people have put on here about the Dimage 2300 and I think if the people actually read the manual they might not have dark pictures since the camera can be adjusted to lighten the pictures up to 4 times normal this is intentional so that when in outside sunny weather your pics dont turn out to bright. I love the pictures that the camera takes but you need to pay attention to the operators manual if you want good pictures, all in all the camera is great and takes perfect pictures if the operator would take a little time to get to know the camera. I have recomended it to several friends and neighbors and every one of them are novice computer users and take great pictures and they also think its the greatest quality and easyiest to use camera. I WOULD RECOMEND ANYONE TO BUY THIS CAMERA IF YOU ARE SMART ENOUGH TO READ THE BOOK On: 2001-02-27
After my last review, I purchased an AC adaptor as per Minolta support recommendations. Still the same problem. The LCD monitor is supposed to light up when it is in PC mode and turned on. Not only does that NOT work, but I cannot get the LCD monitor to turn on to erase pics that I do not want. That, combined with the extremely poor quality pics this thing takes, makes this camera absolutely horrible. When I can manage to down load the pictures after several attempts, the pictures are extremely dark, even with a high ISO setting, Sunlight setting, and outside on a bright day with my back to the sun. I very strongly recommend NOT purchasing this camera. Save your money, save the aggravation, and spend a little more, or at least go with a different manufacturer altogether. The support is horrible, the features of the cam do not come close to what they should be. Very disappointed with this product. Dont know what to recommend, anything has to be better than this camera. by: Anonymous On: 2001-02-12
I purchased this product a couple months ago. It does take very nice pics, but, the darkness of the photos is disappointing, as well at the trouble with downloading via the usb port. Even with fresh batteries, an error message pops up. Essentially, you have to quickly download the images, transfer them, and erase them in about 30 seconds, otherwise it wont work. Minolta tech support isnt available when I need them, so that eliminates any help from them. What initially attracted me to this product was the price, and the small size of the camera. However, I am not impressed with it one bit. Suggest spending a little more on a better product, to avoid the frustrations. I am considering selling mine and purchasing a different product from a different manufacturer. by: Anonymous On: 2001-02-03
No excuse for a simple camera to be this hard to use. Poor software to top it off. I expect better from the "minds at Minolta". I give it my lowest possible rating.Try another brand and stay away from the Minolta digital line. This comes from a guy that has a bag full of Minolta 35mm gear. Too bad, but I will never try their digital line again. On: 2001-01-27
Run, dont walk away from Minolta digital cameras. I own the 2300 and it is horrible. The software does not work well and the camera is way too hard to operate for a simple snapshot camera. There is simply no excuse for such a poor job.To top it off, the photo quality is very poor for a 2 million pixel camera. This thing is Junk! Feel free to email me if you have a question. This is a great camera. Very easy to use and takes superb pictures. However, if you plan on taking 40-50 pictures, be sure to have an extra set of fully-charged batteries.(included in the purchase with a recharger). I highly recommend this camera. On: 2001-01-02
I purchased this product and right from the start I had problems with it. It would not download to my computer properly. It would only download 6-7 pictures one time then only 3-4 another, all the time not allowing me to complete the download. I called Minolta tech support and the tech I spoke to knew less then I did. I returned the camera to where I purchased it and was given another one. Right out of the box it did the exact same thing. Again I called Minolta and was told to send the camera to New Jersey. Two NEW cameras and I have to send them to Jersey, come on guys at Minolta. What happened to the name recognition and quality of your products. I will never purchase another Minolta product. I have Canon cameras and have NO PROBLEMS. And what about the tech support, NONE (no help at all). Spend your money on another product. On: 2000-12-22
Ive tried a lot of cameras and went with this one because of its good price. And, it works just fine.Whats good: Easy to use, Very Good quality photos, Lots of flash options Whats not so good: The auto flash metering doesnt seem to work right all the time: a lot of shots come out too dark, The software isnt as good as other cameras that Ive seen. There is no way to manage the photos through the software, which is a bit of a pain if you use it a lot. Even so, I recommend it. On: 2000-11-20
Ive had the Dimage 2300 a few months now and up until the present moment its been a solid camera. Pretty decent image quality and good performance, considering the price. All of a sudden it started bugging out. Specifically, it would blink the low battery signal after just having bought batteries. Id try putting the camera in PC mode so I could upload all the pictures to my PC and Id get an error on my computer saying that "The camera could not be located properly." Not only that but the camera would blink low battery again. Very frustrating; at this point Im thinking I just threw 400 bucks out the window. I dont know if the internal processor is cheaply designed or what, but I can say that there certainly is a reason for this camera being as cheap a price as it is. Take heed. by: Anonymous On: 2000-08-30
The Minolta Dimage 2300 finally appeared, and at a lower price than expected. It includes rechargeable batteries and recharger, which is a nice touch. The case and cables make a complete digital camera package with no extras needed. It easily fits in pants pocket or briefcase. The primary selection controls are convenient on a single knob - more so than Olympus D460; its other controls are reasonably easy to learn too. The manual is excellent. The Dimage 2300 has twice the pixels (2 Megapixels) at about the same price as the D460. Unfortunately Minolta put no optical zoom on this camera, so you lose pixels when you use the electronic zoom; compare with D460, in which you get optical plus electronic zoom for total of 6x, more than 2300 offers. The Minolta offers a wide range of image sizes and qualities (4) to fit your needs, but if you want the best quality, the 8 Mb CompactFlash only holds one; with other qualities it holds 9, 24, or 47 full size pictures. The performance of the Dimage 2300 has been very good, and the built in USB to PC or Mac using the Adobe PhotoShop provided make this a keeper, being moderately priced for a good quality product. If you want supoer high quality professional ditigal cameras or ones using a wide range of interchangeable lenses, looks elsewhere and take a fat wallet.
