Now that Sony has announced its plans to revitalize this format, the MiniDisc is here to stay.Thats fine with me because Ive been sold on it since the day I bought my first MiniDisc player five years ago. Even in the extended record speeds it produces sound that blows the current crop of mp3 players out of the water. If you care about putting 9 million hours of music on something you can put inside a pack of cigarettes, buy an mp3 player. However, if you want something that is going to sound as good as the original CD, and still allow you to put 2 or 3 hours of music on inexpensive re-recordable discs, MiniDisc is the way to go. by: Anonymous On: 2004-03-15
I bought the PC version and it links easily via USB Great quality recordings and nice and portable plus the blank media is still a deal... great way to archive and make your collection really portable... fits in your pocket... endless hours since the media can be changed out. On: 2003-01-30
I own the blue MZ-R70. I reviewed it in the fall of 2001. You may have already read my first review. It works fine. Recording from MP3s works really well, even though you have to be sitting there while recording. When I bought this unit, Mine came with the AC 3-Volt adaptor, the Headphones, carrying case, remote, owners manual, and a 3 year warranty. Of course, now, its over its warranty, but still works fine. If you read carefully, like me, you WILL be able to find the service manuals online, through SONY. I have printed out a manual for my MZ-R70, MZ-R55 and MZ-R50. All are really helpful when I need to know the inside of the machines. I am an electronics buff, and like to take care of my Mini-disc players, while knowing all about them. The 3-volt "supplied" power supply is compatible with the MZ-R55 also. Nice to know, especially when you like to have more than one power supply. I am not crazy about the plain-looking remote that comes with the unit, but it does its job just the same. It would have been better with a clip on the back, to hold it onto my coat or shirt. The headphones work great, and hold lots of deep digital bass. I can enjoy both the accoustic side of songs, as well as the deep bass. Another thing, I like the bass control from level 0 to level 2 bass. Good when you have a headache but still want to hear music. I still dont have any problems with recording, whether its on a cheap disc or an expensive SONY shock-resistent disc. I think its all in the way some people take care of their mini-disc players. Mine has always been well taken care of. You cant believe all the reviewers and what they say. As far Im concerned, SONY hasnt made a bad product at all, when they released the MZ-R70. Of course, its becoming out of date, on account of updating to newer models, but this item is still great. by: Anonymous On: 2002-12-27
I was pleased to recieve the Mini Disc Player/Recorder I was puzzled by the condition it was in. It appeared to be heavily used with out too much care. The Discs I previously recorded did not play well on this machine and the audio sound was poor 1 out of poss 5. No Battery, no head set, no other accessory was sent with it, nothing not any soft ware or cables not even an old owners guide to show me how to use it properly. I think Ive been good this year, Santa why do I feel like Ive been ripped off by Elfs. Maybe two stars was too generous, maybe a star and a half is closer to the truth. Needless to say Im not happy at all On: 2002-11-24
I am very disapointed with this device. I try to put music from my computer onto it but i can only listen to it in one ear. Plus, the price i bought it for was like $...+ but now u can get it for like $... I suggest a mp3 player because it has no moving parts. On: 2002-03-21
This is an excelent little machine. I bought mine from a friend... with 20 disks, and its worth every penny. This little rig is small, light weight, and has excelent sound and battery life. To start, its small. Its about the size of the palm of your hand, with a bump on the back where the batery goes. it fits in ANY pocket, unlike most CD players. it weighs very little, so it doesnt bother you by pulling on your cloths like some CD players. The sound is great. The only problem is that it has a low record volume, and gets fuzzy when you turn it up too much. If you have the mega bass on while you recond on high, it gets fuzzy also. At low and medium volumes though, its got crystal clear sound (that also depends on your headphones, and what kind of music... rock is less fuzzy than Rap) I like my music LOUD. I ride a bus one way to or from school, and that gets awfull loud. I have several "buss disks" that are recorded on high volumes, and they work fine when you are being bombarded by background noise, but are a little fuzzy when you run it through a car kit or stereo. This machine has over all good sound though, and with a little fine tuning of bass and volume you get great sound. Battery life... what can i say, it lasts. Even on regular duracells, i can get almost a whole school week on and off, and the provided rechargable battery last even longer. Besides the sound glitches here and there, it also makes some noise. When skipping tracks, rewinding a few seconds etc. it has to think for a couple of seconds. Its not a major problem, but it is somewhat slow here and there. It will skip too. If it is riding in your pocket where it can bounce, itll skip. Not as much as a 40 sec asp cd player though. itll freeze for a second, then you will stop, wondering what went wrong, then it goes again. not a mojor problem, but if you jog or run, i suggest you upgrade to an MD with the same G-protection of a CD player. For the money... its a great buy for people who want small portable music, that can come from anywhere, (even MD to MD.)Hope this helped On: 2002-03-11
this pruduct works great it beats my old sharp 722 md. it will please you On: 2001-09-06
Ive had this model for a little over a year, and here are my thoughts:There is simply no other way to carry music around. I am a college student, and I wanted to listen to my blossoming MP3 collection. However, at the time, MP3 players could only hold something like 4 songs, and if you went on a trip, there was no way to put in new songs! I ended up recording a majority of my music onto minidisk and took it with me to summer camp (I was a counselor) and I was able to listen to the majority of my MP3 collection without a hitch. In fact, I was even able to make recordings of some rare bootlegs of a buddy of mine, and I have the disk to this day. Minidisks dont scratch, and they have the versatility of tapes with a much improved sound quality. An audiophile friend of mine says that minidisks sample at at a lower rate than CDs, (theoretically producing inferior sound) but I couldnt tell the difference. Minidisks themselves round about 2 dollars/disk. The big advantage over CDs is the portability. The MZR70 is smaller than my wallet! Furthermore, the battery life is incredibly high, and the fact that they give you a rechargable battery helps this immensely. The version of this model i purchased did not have the USB interface, but I plugged in male/male stereo cord (a cord with headphone plugs on both ends) into my computer and I had no problems. To record I used winamp with the "Pause between songs" plugin to space the tracks out correctly. (The MD tries to space tracks out automatically based on dead air) So why didnt I give the item 5 stars? After a little over a year of admittedly heavy use, my MZR70 no longer records. Instead, it simply creates errors on the minidisks. Even editing existing tracks causes this problem. For a couple hundred bucks, I want to be able to use this thing for a couple of years. Unfortunately this is not the case. I currently have an older (supposedly more durable model) being shipped to me. In summary, the minidisc format is fantastic. There is currently no better way to take your music with you. However, if you think that the MZR70 is for you, be sure to get some protection for it, and perhaps consider getting an extended warrenty. On: 2001-09-03
This is perfect for people who cant seem to figure out a cd burner, or who are just still stuck in the past with tapes. Its easiest when you just link the mini disc player to the head phone jack and play the music and flick the record switch on the mini disc player. although some might think that the fact that it records in real time is a draw back, i think it just adds to the simplisity of it. its a great buy not only because its simple, but if youre a computer person it can be linked with ease to the computer and you can rip all your favorite mp3s onto a couple mini discs. and for the people out there who think that theyll just stick with their cd players, it might intrest you to know that most cds you buy are only about half filled, you can pretty much fit two cds on one 80 minute mini disc, its a great ease and conveiance. by: Anonymous On: 2001-08-09
minidisc players are good to make your own mixes.I make them off both cd radio and computer. On: 2001-07-25
I got this about 8 months ago. Ever since, ive been carrying it around everywhere. Its easy to record songs from your computer no matter what format theyre in. Also, I find it better than an mp3 player because each disc holds 74 mins of music, which is basically what an mp3 player would hold, but with MDs, you can just buy a new one for $3 when you run out of space on one, instead of having to go buy a new $100 memory card. So, you save a lot of money. Although its not as small as a lot of mp3 players, its still has a convenient size, so you can put it in a jacket pocket, and control it with the remote. And I also have to say, the audio quality is wonderful. Its better than a lot of portable cd players out there. You will feel like youre listening to a stereo at home. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who wants truly portable music in an overall affordable package. (plus it looks great, youll be the envy of your friends) by: Anonymous On: 2001-05-24
I have a very large collection of mp3s (about 2000) and i was looking for a way to listen too them when Im not infront of my computer. I first saw the minidisc players a year or two ago, I thought that they would be awesome. After looking at several I finally decided to buy this one. At first it was awesome. I love the freedom you have when recording minidiscs. You can name tracks and rearrange them too. I then came to realize that it wasnt accually that good. First, it is really annoying recording the minidiscs. You can record from a cd player that has optical output very easily, but if you try to record mp3s from the computer, you have to put in track marks and basically watch it record the whole cd. Another thing that is very annoying is that the accual minidiscs are not very portable. they are pretty thick and there is no good way to store them. I have about 50 minidiscs and when I go on a long trip, I want to take them all. No one has really made a good storage unit either, the bigest one i saw was a binder that held 24. When i go on a trip i normally end up just throwing them all into a backpack or something like that. On the plus side, the unit works flawlessly and does what it says it is supposed to do. I would advise you to think carefully about what you want in a portable music player before you buy it. If you just go to work and would only take two or three minidiscs with you each day, this thing would be great. but if your like me, and go on long trips where you just have to have all you music i would recomend Nomad Jukebox or a MP3-CD player. Ive been messing with cd burners for years to make my own compilations, and i have to say that buying the Sony MZ-R70 was the best audio buy i ever made. Its got so many conveniences, like it runs off of one AA battery, which you can buy anywhere if your rechargable one (included) dies, and you can record from any sound output, icluding optical, and its one of the smallest mini-disc recorders in the world, its smaller and lighter than my wallet! Some people say that the earphones which are supplied have a short cord, but it was designed like that so that the remote hangs at your chest; or that the response time to commands is slow, but the laser has to read ahead to record 40 seconds into memory, so naturally it takes a second or two to get back to what youre hearing at that second. With a stereo mini-plug (available from any electronic store or radio shack, cost = around $5) you can record any sound from your computer, making it possible to make all the compilations youd like from mp3s, or any other pc media. Also, this same cord can be plugged into the line-out or headphone jack on any cd player to record CDs. The MZ-R70PC seems to be a waste of money to me, because it does the same thing as the stereo mini-plug i just mentioned, and the signal is only analog. You can also plug a microphone to the microphone input to record lectures, and if you record in mono (it would be a waste to record a lecture in stereo) you get double recording time, making a 74 minute disc able to hold 146 minutes. The only downfall of this product is that the dislplay doesnt have any backlighting, and the remote doesnt have a display either, but if this is a big concern for you, you can buy a used remote from Sonys MZ-R55 mini-disc player, and that remote has a backlit display, and functions perfectly with the MZ-R70. This product is definately a good buy, and the blue color will impress all the ladies. Good luck with yours, im having a blast with mine... On: 2001-04-05
Ive been putting off buying a portable listening device since my last 90 Aiwa tape player. But after seeing the Minidisc in action - its a definite buy and constant use gem.First, do the math if youre seriously comparing MP3 format vs. Minidisc. A single MD at 74min costs 2 dollars at most - Read/write capabilities, move tracks, edit, `tMark=index songs, etc. You dont need a computer either - use your existing AV setup to record - while having the option to use PC, DVD, etc. Sound quality? Can you say OPTICAL input. You cannot get any better sound resolution than this; any decent DVD player has an optical out; decent CD players too. RCA IN is a plus (not included) and the PC IN option is mediocre - it is convenient with all the CD-R/PC/MP3 formatted music. Its got a two-stage added-bass feature that works quite well. The standard headphones are excellent - an updated version with position detents for fixed fit. The remote fob device is essential for total playback+record control once your MDplayer is tucked away in the pocket. (look for the RM-MZR55 remote with backlighting if you want to upgrade) The unit has never skipped even with major motion, jostling, or shock. I havent done a drop-test, but Ill skip it for now. The biggest drawback is the lack of a custom case/holster for the unit; it does come with a bag, but it isnt adequate for protection or carrying with any confidence. Plus, the lack of backlighting on the main unit is a bummer. It comes with its own AA ni-cad battery and charger, and runs for a prolonged period of time ~ 6 hours playback, 1.5-2x as long on a regular AA. The half-sized ice cream sandwich form kicks the CD portable players to the curb. It isnt as ubiquitous as some MP3 players - but why would you want to drop several dimes on something invisible. Personally, the anodized blue colored one has more impact than the silver, but the form and interface overall is a delight. The battery bulge just slightly cants the display up, the button separation and placement works great for easy access. I find excuses to block the world out and listen to high-fidelity music on the go. On: 2001-04-02
I bought this make of minidisc and found out to work great! However, within 5 months I had discovered that the battery slot had compressed slightly and could no longer hold a AA sized alkaline or rechargeable battery. If it had only compressed at one side then yes, it was dropped. But for the whole battery compartment to do that there must have been a fault. Im not saying dont buy it, Im just saying be careful. On: 2001-02-26
To be honest i dont think minidisc players have got much better since they were first brought out. I mean they may have got longer lasting batteries but that is hardly that amazing. I have got a Sony MZR55 and i see all these new portable MD players and they hardy have any new features. I only gave it 4 stars because any Sony portable MD players are the best and cant get any better so why made any new ones. On: 2001-02-11
I bought this machine, the MZ-R70PC version, with the PClink back in September 2000 and Ive never been happier. Not only does this machine have such a very good sound quality and good design, I also love the fact that its very portable and is light enough to carry around anywhere.Ive heard that this machines response time (going from track to track and normal button response) is a little slow for some people but I find it fast enough that its not annoying. Another problem Ive heard is that the length of the headphone cord is a little too short. Yes, it is! The remedy? Go to Radio Shack and buy an extension cord for $2! Other than these two that Ive mentioned, I cant really think of any other problems with the machine/package. If you can find the PC version (MZ-R70PC) - get it. Its a must-buy for those who are planning on recording stuff from your PC, and it records any sound that comes out of your USB port. by: Anonymous On: 2001-02-08
This MZR70 is great! I record all of my favorite songs for free! but I have to say that the usb cable is pointless, the patch cord you can just donload from the speaker jack on your computer. It is a great product. I give this 5 stars because if your looking for a GOOD minidisc player, this is the one to get, it never skips, but one bad thing is the volume, its not very good at all On: 2001-01-28
I know the item is currently out of stock, but this little machine works up to its name. The outer shell of my player/recorder is blue like the MZR90 model. I do all my recordings in half the time Id do them with an audio cassette recorder. Theres no comparison in quality and efficiency with the latter equipment.Best features are: 1) Is very compact, it fits in my shirt pocket 2) The remote comes in handy when my coat is closed 3) It fits in a standard discman accessory case with discman 4) Included phones are enriched with amazing bass boost sound 5) The best of all is for skipping a track takes about 3 to 4 seconds. This feature is convenient for me when I only want to hear certain songs. 6) The shock absorbtion is great. Never to worry about a song skipping again. 7) The adaptor comes in handy for recording while saving on batteries 8) With accessories, you can record from phono, CD, cassette, and from your VCR hookup on the stereo. With all that, you cant go wrong. SONY has lived up to its name in quality. My MZR70 works like a charm. I wont upgrade yet, as this machine meets my expectations. I quickly bonded with such a quality item. For someone looking for a unit with the equivalent in volume to a Discman, the Minidisc has a softer sound. You cant obtain with this unit the same volume strength as the Discman, but for the amount you can get, you have the most out of the 1.2 volt battery provided with it. If the volume is up to about 85%, its enough for me. I say this because some songs are recorded louder than others. The battery life is normally ( 7 to 8 hrs. ). In my accessory kit, included with the player was among others, a rechargeable Ni-Cad battery ( NC-WMAA DC 1.2V 700mAh ) that lasts the said amount. SONY does offer a DRY battery, not available here in Montreal. IF SOMEONE CAN LET ME KNOW WHERE I CAN GET ONE??? at mailto:woof1@sympatico.ca . As soon as this item is available, get it! I had the MZR70 for 6 months and it worked great, never skipped, excellent sound and beautiful digital-optical recording. It was stolen (lucky thief) and I got the one with the PC link, but havent used it yet. Can any1 explain to me this: When I record MP3 files with the USB cable - are they copied onto the minidisc in MP3 format (meaning I can fit about 170 songs on one disc) or simply transformed back to audio (WAV?) format? Please consider this question, and leave a note here if you have experience with this. I am just about ready to exchange my MD (still in box) with one of those portable MP3-CD-Players available out there (www.mp3discplayers.com) for 10 hours of music on one CDR. Please email me if you know the answer: guyshiloh@hotmail.com by: Anonymous On: 2001-01-20
Ive had this recorder/player for about 4 weeks. My model comes with the USB connector and the rechargable battery. Im very happy with the playback, however, the recording process is not very easy. The usb connector is completely pointless, i get the same exact sound quality from the headphone jack on my computer. In addition, when recording from your computer, you cannot run any other programs that use sound, or else your mini disc will record them. In addition, the music is not very loud at all, i leave all of the volume controls on my computer all the way up, but on the mini disc, you have to put it on full for the music to be audible. by: Anonymous On: 2001-01-14
Theres been a dispute among which is the better, a minidisc player, or an mp3 player. Well if your one of those people, let me clear it up for you. First of all, mindisc prices are falling like crazy and minidisc recorders are as hard as hell to understand unless you have technical know how (i wouldnt buy one for my mom, even if she liked music). First of all, the one i got was for a real deal because it was one of the many returned md player/recorders (try looking for them, especially after christams). I have an mp3 player, and it has served me well for the 2 years ive used it, but it only records 8 songs at a time, which was extrememly annoying. So i decided that it was time to move on to minidisc players and i bought this one. There is a real difference. First of all, there are those new mds that say theyll record from your computer, well they will, but if your a sound buff like me, you will seriously hate the sound quality. But being a sound buff, i bought a Fujitsu notebook with an optical out port made specifically for md recorders and HOLY COW was the sound quality awesome. Line in isnt all that good, but recording digitally is freaking amazing. Also, it does take awhile to record a cd in contrast to Mp3 players which only take a few seconds to download a song to, but you can only download a few songs. If your looking for portability and quantity (you have a lot of music) go with the minidisc. But if your an active person who wants something good to listen to at the gym, go get yourself an mp3 player; theyre much more quiet,(the md player is LOUD when recording and changing tracks, it also feels delicate cause it vibrates in your hand). Theyre faster to set up and download songs to, and the sound quality is almost always amazing. So unless you have an optical port on your pc or cdplayer, go for an mp3 player. Even if you dont understand how to use your computer, it doesnt get any easier with an md player. by: Anonymous On: 2001-01-10
This is a good MD player for the money. But it[s no good] because on the back of the player there is a big lump. Because they make u use a regular battery. Then on top of that the remote isnt LCD. And its not as easy to use. For a few buck more you can get a MD (Sony MZR55) with digital recording, a flat battery, LCD remote that decplays the song title and time. Plus its way easyer to use. I belive this is just the sonys WAY cheaper version of the MZR55. So only buy this if your low on cash and you want to show NO TASTE! On: 2001-01-05
This mini-disc player has to be one of the best on the market today. (if not the best)It is easy to use, small in size, and much more practical than a CD burner (its like a portable burner/player)Positives: #GREAT sound quality (like CD) #easy to set up, only takes about 5 minutes #it makes recording simple, without the need of a HUGE system attached to your home stereo #PC USB connected #software is already on your Windows computer #looks cool, and is very light and rugged #regular AA battery last 17 hours! Negatives (there arent very many) #long recording time (but it goes by faster than youd expect) #Inserting title takes a few seconds # included rechargeable battery last only 6 hours Overall I give it a 5 because it was well worth the money and is better than a CD burner, MP3 player, and definitly better than a tape player! On: 2001-01-03
Im surprised that mini disc hasnt caught on. Its small, you can record MP3s (the reason I wanted this in the first place), and its easily concealable. The only problem I have is that recording takes forever, its second-for-second (meaning that the time it takes to record is the amount of time the song lasts), and pre-recorded mini discs are hard to come by. Not even Amazon sells them. Other than that, its a great player. I dont have this particular model, but mines very similar. I like the fact that you can assign names to each song. Another big, big plus is the cost of the discs: $2 a piece. It doesnt skip and you can record and re-record several times over. I could go on and on about how great mini discs are... On: 2001-01-03
The MZ-R70 is great for those who are just starting out with recording stuff, great for early bands and stuff. If you but this you must buy the PC link recorded from SONY so you can put music files on MDs. On: 2000-12-31
You know I originally bought the Sharp Minidisc Player with the voquette package. The one that is supposed to let you record MP3s. Well it lets you do that but it leads you to believe that it speaks to the MD recorder. It doesnt. You can record MP3s by using any audio player on your computer and then plugging in a cable from you PC line out to you MD Rec. The Voquette is a waste. You can get a cable for $3 and the software is free. You can use napster or windows comes with one usually. I am purchasing the Sony Model MZR70 now without the PC link. Because I think the PC link is probably just like the Voquette. Voquette made me think I could type in the song titles and have them show up in the MD but it doesnt. If anyone knows anything otherwise please let me know. Scott On: 2000-12-16
Great unit - small, compact. Even my big fingers can use the buttons. I would only keep in mind for those considering the purchase of this unit, is that when recording in manual mode, you cannot adjust the recording level while recording! The sharp units can be adjusted in manual recording mode. I understand some of the high level newer Sony units have fixed this... For some people, this would be the very reason not to purchase this unit. For others, it is not a major concern at all. Usually when I begin recording, I am not going to be making a lot of, if any, adjustments. Unit fits fine too in your pocket w/o feeling heavy. by: Anonymous On: 2000-12-15
This Mini Disc player is awesome it record good sounds good but It does not record MP3s it record cds but not mp3s their is another one like it called Sony MZR70 Mindisc Recorder/Pckit it is the ecact same thing but it comes with a PC LINK for recording mP3s and hooks up to USB on your computer u can get the one that does MP3 at ... and search for a sony mini disc player and make sure it comes with a PC Link this MiniDisc player is awesome overall and i think it is great when i satered recording mp3s On: 2000-12-08
The quality of the player is very high. I like everything about it except for one thing. The editing features for the player are not easily accessible. If two songs are recorded it is not possible to separate them unless you delete it and then record them again. by: Anonymous On: 2000-12-08
I recieved this Mini Disc for my birthday, and at first I thought that this Mini Disc is boring, all my friends had it, etc. but then when I checked out the player itself, and then started recording, I realized that this Mini Disc player is perfect for anyone that loves music, and it comes with all the proper recording materials, and the clearness etc. is wonderful. This product is for any age. I give it 18 stars!!! by: Anonymous On: 2000-12-05
The Sony Minidisc player is one of the nicer minidisc players out there. It has a sleek shape and a user-friendly interface. It comes with headphones with the little remote thing which is a nice bonus. I rate this a 4 out of 5 and would definately recomend to someone looking for a minidisc player/recorder. by: Anonymous On: 2000-12-05
I checked this product out in the store and it looked flimsy. Never tried it so dont know much about it. Sorry. On: 2000-12-05
I got my Sony MD player as a gift last summer and since then it has become an indispensable part of my life. I like it because I get CD quality sound and 74 minutes of music (or whatever) in such a small package; it fits easily into my shirt or pants pocket. Plus, its totally handy to have this tiny unit that plays and records -- I can pull stuff off radio, CD, tape, etc. The battery doesnt last as long as I want it to (like 12 hours) but it does recharge very easily. Sound quality is fantastic. The higher up model is slightly nicer, so I would give it a 5, but this one is a 4 or 4 and a half easily. by: Anonymous On: 2000-12-04
I was looking for a minidisc player/recorder which was small, good, and inexpensive. After a lot of looking and no finding I finally found this. The Sony MZR70 Minidisc Recorder is everything I was looking for and more. It is the cheapest you will find that can record as well as play. It also includes a PC link which most others do not. If your looking for a good inexpensive MD player this is the one. On: 2000-12-02
Sony has come out with many innovations but this one is indeed child friendly. My six year old uses the piece for her music practice and it is indeed very convenient for daily use. The system works instantly and I would urge folks to buy the model with the USB interface if MP3 downloads are an issue.
