TERRIBLE     On: 2003-12-21

It is very rare to be able to play a dvd the whole way through. Inevitably, at a peak moment in the movie, it will freeze and skip. Once that starts happening, forget it. It will never recover, so the only option is to shut it down. Even then, good luck in getting it going again. I am not sure why it skips. At first I thought it was due to movement, but seems to be able to take movement for the most part, and will skip even when perfectly still. I have also tried cleaning the discs, but that doesnt seem to help. I have decided that it is because this player is a piece of junk. It is so frustrating trying to watch something and have it act up for no apparent reason. I have been tempted to toss the thing against the wall many times. If you are in the market for a portable dvd player, DO NOT BUY THIS ONE. Buy a laptop or a more reliable portable dvd player instead. We won this dvd player from a technology conference, so the only comfort we have is that it was free.
Junk     On: 2003-10-25

This thing broke beyond repair after minimal usage. It runs hot and is very heavy. The battery life is not acceptable.

Buy a cheap laptop instead.

Have you ever had you child scream in the car "MOMMY IM BORED"?
wELL I HAD TO GO ONE A 16 HOUR TRIP TO OKLAHOMA AND I USED THIS AND MY CHILD STAYED QUIET THE WHOLE TRIP!When his battery started to die I just pluged it into the cigeret lighter. Thank the lord this was on sale
Not for mobile use
by: Anonymous    On: 2003-09-08

We were looking for a cheap/flexible mobile dvd player. This is not it. The unit works fine untill you move it. It skips, and skips, and skips.....They should note that it is NOT for use in a moving vehicle (and why include a cigerette lighter adapter?) The good news...the vendor issued a return authorization with little hassle.
Hate it     On: 2003-09-08

I bought this DVD player about a month ago and have been cursed with skipping and freezing. Sometimes it even cut back to the beginning of the DVD. The only reason it got 2 stars was because of the features it has. Believe you me Audiovox willbe getting a nasty gram from me. Word to the wise, find another DVD player.
Pretty Decent Machine For The Price     On: 2003-03-06

Ive been using this item for over a year now and I havent had a problem with it. Its been a faithful little machine. I like its portability and have been using it in my home system... has a great picture and super sound quality with surround sound capability. The manual is pretty much useless but luckily it didnt take me long to figure it out. The battery life is usually less than the movie length luckily included are a power adapter and a car adapter... but that pretty much covers everything. Would be perfect to entertain kids on long trips
Problems galore
by: Anonymous    On: 2003-01-25

The idea behind a piece of portable equipment is ... Are you listening Audivox?... PORTABILITY! The mechanism in this thing is so sensitive?/delicate?/fragile! that it mistracks at the slightest jarring. I have actually had to send the thing back to the USA to have it repaired. You would think that a product designed to be portable would be a bit more rugged.

Even after having it repaired, it continues to flatly refuse to play some DVDs while others seem to work fine. As for design, it is the portable equivalent of an orthopaedic shoe, occasionally functional but always very chunky and clunky.

For overseas buyers, take note that according to the people I spoke to at Audivox, it is also impossible to make the thing multi-regional.

A thoroughly disappointing product.

Much better than I expected, but everything soon changed     On: 2003-01-16

I received the Audiovox DVD1500 for Christmas, after having asked for a Panasonic or a Toshiba portable DVD player. My mother-in-law saved over $... by getting me this one, so I dont fault her. However, had I been shelling out the money I would have done without until I could have afforded more.

Once I got used to the fact that I know owned an Audiovox product (something I had vowed never to do), I found that this little unit had some pretty good features: S-Video out, Optical Digital Out, a pretty decent screen, and good battery life. My only complaints were that it was kind of clunky (unlike the 2nd and 3rd generation models that are much slimmer) and it also couldnt play MP3s.

We used the player in the car ride home and my son watched about five Baby Einstein DVDs. I used it a little to watch bits and pieces of some new DVDs I had gotten for Christmas. Finally, the other night I snuggled into bed to watch Harry Potter & the Sorcerers stone. About halfway through it began to skip and hang-up. I checked the DVD multiple times and there were no scratches and no dust. It also wasnt acting up in the same spot like a scratch would have caused. I did notice that the unit was quite hot.

Since then it will play a DVD for about a minute or so and then freezes or skips ahead eventually a couple chapters. Im getting ready to ship it back to Audiovox--IF my mother-in-law still has her receipt. Otherwise, Audiovox wants $...to repair the device. Remember what I said Id do if I were spending my own money?

My ** 2 star rating is an average of:
**** four stars for features
* one star for design (too big and heavy)
* one star for quality (broke after limited use)

Clunky and poor resolution     On: 2003-01-11

Got this item excitedly (price and specs) and opened it to find it had a defective pixel in the screen. I also noticed the resolution was poor (lots of pixelation-like artifacts) and the thing was just big and clunky.

Not recommended for those that were looking for a bargain, but could afford a little more.

Further News     On: 2003-01-06

After much effort Audiovox finally agree to replace the DVD player...however it arrived not in the original container (Is it a rebuilt one being passed off as new?) and missing the cord that connects the power converter to the wall as well as the RCA plug cables that connect it to the TV...I have no way of knowing if it works and have asked if they would be so kind as to send cables...The front plate is falling off, but I can live with it that since it appears to be just a cosmetic issue...

Also I dont know why but in the box was the paper work for a return of a MVP 200 package (mobile VCR unit which wouldnt play)...it was installed by Columbus Car Audio for a Ms. Aimee Novak of Westerville Ohio...

Why I have this paperwork, may expalin why my paperwork was missing when I sent mine in...

It appears as if Quality Control is maintaining the standard I have come to expect.

Further News....(see...Was it made in Russia?)     On: 2002-11-19

I sent my player into Audiovox as instructed along with my receipt from Amazon.com...as far as I know it has been sent into space...I know it arrived (I sent it UPS and can track it) But once it went in it became a mystery...

Lets review...

Did not work during the warranty period...
Needed authorization from Amazon to send it back (the warranty period on Amazons site is 1 year...on the Audiovox site it is only 3 months)
Sent into the ether...So I dont even have the body....

You be the judge...is it worth the money? Is Audiovox a company you want to trust?

Good Value     On: 2002-08-21

i bought this dvd player to take overseas with me on an air force tdy and have nothing bad to say about it. i have watched a half dozen or so movies and experienced no skipping problems or any freezing up. the battery life is short but i use it mainly plugged in. very easy to hook to a regular tv. for the price i am very pleased with this product. screen size is fine for personal viewing
Was it made in Russia?     On: 2002-08-20

I have owned this product now for about 8 months (it was a Christmas Present for my daughter). Its intended use was for traveling hence it has only been used occasionally.

However, I am sorry to report that it is falling apart and further it no longer plays a DVD...When you put one in it just says "reading" on the screen and the disc spins faster and faster until it is making a whirring noise so loud you turn it off before something weird happens. Call me old fashioned but I think a DVD player should be able to play DVDs.

Would I buy another Audiovox product? Well this is my first experience with one and I can say it was a total waste of money. I think it should have lasted much longer than 8 months of pretty easy use.

A Great Little Machine     On: 2002-05-14

This is a really neat piece of equipment. It plays all sorts of digital disks--DVD, CD, VCD, etc. There is a car adapter and all sorts of cables for connecting to everything but a dishwasher! The screen may be a little small for Lawrence of Arabia or Star Wars, but otherwise its fine.
Not a Reliable Product     On: 2002-04-17

My son bought the Audiovox DVD1500 portable DVD player in early November 2001. He doesnt use it very much and takes good care of it. He even has a padded bag where he stores it when not in use. We have had to send this product back to Audiovox in New York twice; Nov 26, 2001 and Mar 18, 2002 at our expense...The first time the DVD player would not play at all, which Audiovox was prompt ( approximately 3 weeks) in sending us a new DVD player, and the second time because the picture would not show up on the portable screen, although we could hear the sound. Audiovox promptly (within about 3 weeks) returned the DVD player to as with a note that they could not find anything wrong, but they cleaned it. It currently is working, but I would rather have received a refund the second time. Buyer beware.
A Must for ANYONE with kids and long trips!!!!!
by: Anonymous    On: 2002-03-24

For those of us who have children whose attention span last about 2 seconds and are constantly on the road this product is a must, I have owned this dvd player for approx. 10 months and I must say it has never let me down. I have two young children and it is usually so stressful on long trips as you find yourself pulling over constantly trying to dig out another toy that will entertain your child while on the road. This portable dvd player is a dream come true, I just put the movie in and everyone is happy@!!! It a little bulky compared to the other models however I would say this is good as it looks stronger, the other models are so thin they look like they would break so easily.

The picture quality is great and clear and the audio, even in the car my children can hear wonderfully. I would recommend this product to any person out there, it works wonderfully and includes all appropriate batteries, cables for the car...etc. I would recommend though that you buy the Case Logic portable dvd bag, it is specifically made for portable dvd players and is padded very well and has many compartments for storing your movies.

Every thing it was supposed to be.     On: 2002-03-21

Was packaged very well.
And the performance was more than I hoped for.. Ken
the big bulky one
by: Anonymous    On: 2002-03-08

i bought this dvd player and as soon as i took it out of the box it was much bigger than what i thought it looked like. but i put in my movie and it froze up. i tap it and it started back up and than froze again. so i called the manufacture 800 number and they told me even though i bought it on line used... i can send it back under the manufature warrenty. and that made me happy. so as long as it wooks when i get it . Ill be ahead of the game for the price =) Well i just got my player back and they gave me a brand new unit. Thats what i call customer service with a smile =)
Great Buy
by: Anonymous    On: 2002-03-07

This is a great little machine, especially at the price. Im amazed at the picture quality and found it very easy to use. Its especially handy to sit on the computer desk, given its small size, so you can watch movies while you work at the computer. Perfect for someone who wants to go DVD and have portability without spending a lot of money. Highly recommended.
The Hyundai of Portable DVD Players     On: 2002-02-14

Ever drive a Hyundai? Its a competent little car. It gets you to work and back in relative comfort. It doesnt have the amenities or coolness of a BMW, but it costs a third as much.

Thats this DVD player. Its kind of chunky, a little homely, and the features are so-so. However, its the cheapest you can get, and it plays DVDs just fine, thank you.

First, this unit is the least sexy portable DVD available. If youre buying it to show your friends how cool you are, forget it. Its 2 inches thick and pretty heavy. The battery is a giant silver log. Its made by Audiovox, so no cache there. Basically, you almost want to hide it from other people when youre using it.

Second, the battery is terrible. It lasts for approximately 2 hours. Movies are almost all longer than this. It also takes a while to charge, and no extra batteries are available. The worst thing about it, though, is that its NiCad and not Lithium Ion. That means it has battery memory, and must be discharged before charging to maintain optimal battery life. To sum up, if you need to use the battery for long periods of time, buy something else!

However, if you only plan to use the battery occasionally, and dont care what technology snobs think of you, this player has some nice things to offer.

First, the picture is terrific. Its sharp and bright, and does justice to any flick you want to watch.

Second, Audiovox makes up for the poor battery by including both an AC adapter and a car adapter. That means you can use it anywhere a cord will reach. It also includes an S-video cable and standard RCA A/V cables, so you can bring it to Grandmas and watch DVDs on her TV. It also comes with headphones, in case you dont have any. Thats a lot of stuff!

The overall quality of this player is very good. It seems very difficult to break. In fact, the bulkiness gives an impression of sturdiness the smaller players dont have.

So boiled down, you can get a brand new portable DVD player for ...less than the next cheapest unit. It has a great picture, nice sound (with headphones), and is very sturdy. If you can live with the battery, and without the approval of your gadget-guy neighbor, it seems your choice is clear....

Great Product!

I can not say one bad thing about this DVD player, it is simple to use and hook up. Plays great, nice and crystal clear picture and works great in the car, no skipping at all!!
DVD1500 A great system but a little heavy     On: 2002-01-12

I compared this system with several others and found that for the price and what you walk away with nothing came close. I paid [$] for it and think that it was money well spent. The only down side would be the weight. At a little over 3lbs it is heavy so make sure you purchase a bag to carry it in. The picture and sound are good and it comes with enough wires that you can connect it to almost anything. All in All I think this is a Great Little Player.
Best Value Ever     On: 2002-01-04

Great player for its money.Great picture sound is pretty good.I have experienced no problems and I have played it constantly.I havent had any problems with it glitching. It has not over heated for me.It has to play for 3 hours just to get warm. The accessories given to you are great with the car hookups and the attachment to the walls.A great buy.
Great Product!

I bought this not expecting to much but let me tell you it is great! It works fine, crisp clear picture and sounds great! I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a DVD player!
You get what you pay for     On: 2001-12-16

When portable CD players came out, we had problems with pausing. The slightest twinge caused mine to pause. I kept mine in the family room when I first tested it and it still paused. I am returning mine because of this and the monitor did not work. If I buy another one I am going to go higher quality and look for one that can take a few bumps.
RUINED     On: 2001-12-16

This DVD player ruined the first dvd I played in it. The brand new, just out of the box, dvd of Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs was spotless before play. When it stopped playing part way through, I took it out of the machine and discovered a ring around the playing side, about half-way through. I returned it and the sales rep did not seem surprised nor did he argue with me. Also, the user manual does not have an index and leaves out some of the steps necessary for play. The control buttons did not work well.
AUDIOVOX PORTABLE DVD     On: 2001-12-15

WOW! THIS PLAYER IS GREAT! IT IS EASY TO USE AND HANDLE. IT EASILY MEASURES UP TO THE MORE EXPENSIVE ONES. IN FACT WHY ANYONE WOULD PAY MORE WHEN THEY CAN GET THE AUDIOVOX BEATS ME.
THE BATTERY LAST LONG ENOUGH FOR A MOVIE AND IT COMES WITH THE CAR ADAPTER SO THAT SAVES THE BATTERY. MY FAMILY USES IT ON ALL CAR TRIPS AND LOVES IT!
Great Item For The Price     On: 2001-12-14

I have a lot of fun with this product. The reviews are true regarding the instruction manual, which really is awefull, however, if youre at all knowledgeable about electronic products, youll have no problem figuring it out. You can hook this up to your TV set as well. A Tip: The hook-up is very simple if you have a "line in" button on your VCR. All you do is plug the audio/video jacks into the back of your VCR and hit your line in button on your VCR to operate (I tried every other way of connecting). The coolest thing about this product is, you can watch it through your TV or just on its own. The 5" screen is actually plenty big enough to see incredible detail. My favorite way to use this product is while Im home on the computer, I plug my computer speakers into it and watch a DVD while Im checking e-mail etc. Also, get plenty of use as a home theatre system because the audio out on this product allows me to hook it up to my surround sound option on my stereo system. Really glad I bought it and for not much more than a non-portable player!
Solid product, few glitches     On: 2001-10-21

Ive had this player for about 2 weeks now and overall have found it to be very good. The picture is great, and the features are good. The built in speakers could have been better but they do the job. The main problems Ive had has been with its ability to overheat if its not on a solid well ventilated surface, also the picture skips at the slightest vibration. The thing is loaded with cautions and warnings saying that just about anything will void the warrenty or cause it to melt down. Overall, it does the job and the price is unbeatable. I would reccommend this unit to someone who is looking for something bare bones and is on a budget.
Amazing unit, definately 5 star from me
by: Anonymous    On: 2001-10-09

For someone who owned panazonic DVD laptop dvd just prior I tell
you the truth I did not expect much from Audiovox. But this unit
is excellent. Picture quality is better than Panasonic. It has excellent sound quality and the fact that you can turn off the picture is a great feature to have. You cant beat the price with all the goodies you get like, speakers, remote S-video cable etc. 2Hr battery is great and the fact you can either recharge the battery or connect the power directly to the unit is more than I could ask.... Excellent product indeed.
A Bargain
by: Anonymous    On: 2001-09-21

Considering the Price ($399) I am very happy with this player. Sure, others weigh less, look sleeker, but you will pay more. For me this player is just fine.
Audiovox DVD1500 Portable DVD Player     On: 2001-08-30

THIS ITEM WAS SHIPPED SUPER FAST! IT IS VERY SIMPLE TO OPERATE, THE SCREEN COLOR IS CLEAN AND CRISP AND YOU CANNOT BEAT THE PRICE!!! VERY NICE TO TRAVEL WITH AND COMES WITH ALL NEEDED ACCS. EXCEPT CASE, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS DVD PLAYER, THANKS AGAIN!!!!!!!!
DVD On the Go     On: 2001-08-15

The picture is sharp, clear with great color and sound. The size and price are just what was wanted for personal viewing on long trips, or to set up in the kitchen while preparing meals or after-dinner clean ups. Not complicated, very accessible with the battery or AC/DC connections. Can use in my car/truck with the cigarette-lighter connection. Can connect to regular tv for larger screen if needed for more viewers. I like this DVD player very much!
Good bang for the buck..
by: Anonymous    On: 2001-08-14

This is a real value. For this price you cant go wrong. We bought it to take on vacation for use in the car and at home as a portable DVD player to be used in the kids rooms and basement. The 6" picture quality OK, not the best but i was not expecting that. The playback on a TV is good too much better than I expected. If the kids break this, it is not like i am out [....] Buy it..youll like it!!
