I have had this DVD player for years. I have had no problems with it! When this player decides to go I will replace it with itself; that is how reliable this player is. For those reviews that said their player died quickly-keep in mind that no matter what company you buy from there are bound to be duds. JVC is a great company and therefore produced a great DVD player. Buy this machine and you will not be dissapointed! On: 2002-07-18
Ok, Ive been reading the reviews on this one and I figured I put my 2 cents in. First of all, this is NOT the player for you if you want CD-R, CD-RW or MP3 capability. Im sure there are others out there that will appeal to your needs so stop reading now. That said, Ill touch on the positive first, then the drawbacks. This was my first DVD player. I wanted a brand known for high quality and made room in my budget accordingly. I had a basic, 27" Panasonic TV with S-Video inputs and NO receiver. I got this home, hooked it up via the S-video cable and used my basic component cables for the sound. I popped in a dvd and, all I can say is WOW! The picture itself was incredible.... it rivaled the digital TV demos Id seen in various stores. Im sure alot of you out there are saying "whatever" but it was that good! I was so pleased. Then, after reading up on the additional features this player had, I began to play around with some of them. It was a heck of a lot of fun!! I dont think Ill use them much anymore, but they are good to show off to your buddies... :) Anyway, all went well for months and months... I had no problems whatsoever with this unit and it plays ALL kinds of dvds... (either region free or 1). I would aggressively use the multiple trays and watch my favorites scenes from my discs in random order... no performance problems whatsoever! Ive noticed a lot of griping here about the remote... I didnt really have any problems. I dont mind the shift button... I mean, how often are you going to be zooming in or changing the angle... furthermore, how many dvds offer an angle option... (I can only think of a handful right now, and its only in their special features...) Anyway, all went great and then I realized I wanted surround sound, being that Id amassed quite a collection of dvds; most with 5:1 capability. At the time I was a bit dvd/digitally illiterate and I noticed a strange little logo on the front; DTS. "Hmmm..." I wondered, and I began to research this. What I found out is that some dvd players have a DTS decoder in them and others (like this unit) just have DTS OUT capability. Therefore, to take advantage of this feature I would have to buy a receiver with a DTS decoder in it. No big deal, being that I was planning on this anyway and wasnt even sure what DTS was in the first place. I ended up getting an Aiwa receiver with a DTS decoder and, while hooking it up to the unit, I noticed it had a digital out jack. I went out and bought a digital Fiber-Optic Cable (Toslink-to-Toslink), hooked it up to my amp... left the S-Video cable hooked up directly to my tv and fired er up! All I can say is WOW! This unit combined with my amp delivers KILLER sound.. in 5.1 or DTS... the DTS is audibly better! Ive had this unit for almost a year and have had NO problems. Ok, on the downside, the wait when you put a dvd in is a bit long... I do wish it had CD-R capability since I do have a CD burner but I have stereos that play them... ironically, it DOES play the VCD format.. but I do not own any. Also, when switching from disk to disk, it takes a bit longer than is preferable... no biggie. It also seems that its really taxing the hardware from the sound of it... but again, it hasnt broken yet. Another drawback is its high price... especially since you dont get a lot of compatibility choices. There are lots of bells and whistles to choose from, but I doubt youll find yourself using all of them; all of the time. I really dont have many negative things to say about it... my experience has been nothing but positive and its given me many, many hours of entertainment! Thanks JVC! On: 2002-03-26
I was satisfied until 14 months after I got it the thing decided to stop reading both DVDs and CDs. I used it normally in my home and was just starting to get a decent DVD collection and it did this.It was a fine product up until this event but considering the price of DVD players I dont think its something people want to keep buying so to let you know it doesnt work after 14 months! Also when you try and contact JVC they dont get back to you.I would advise you to look around for a different product, I wish I had, and if anyone has any suggestions for me as to how to fix this please let me know .Thanks On: 2002-01-03
When I initially purchased this item I was totally thrilled with it. I have had the product for a little under a year, and am still pleased with it but would like to point out an issue or two I have concerning the player. First off, for folks with large DVD collections (i.e. over 200) this is not the best choice. The more DVDs and regions I play, the more confused this player seems to get. It still plays all the DVDs I own but gives me quite a bit of attitude. Secondly: the remote control for this item is bad, at the least it is an ergo-nightmare. For half the functions, many of them quite important I might add, you need to hold down a shift button while pressing the actual key you want to use. A toggle shift would work much better. I realize the second gripe may seem petty but again this review is targeted for serious DVD collectors, when you are trying to look through special features or whatever---on numerous discs the shift thing just takes the fun out of it... I have had this DVD player for almost a year (I got it as a gift last Christmas) and have had NO problems with it at all. Its quiet, plays DVDs, CDs, CDRs and CDRWs with no problem. It also plays VCDs but I havent used that feature because I dont have any. But overall its a wonderful DVD player. And Im not sure if its my television or the DVD player but the sound quialty is unbelievable. I can hear every word and dont need subtitles at all. The remote is eacy to use, and the buttons are just the right size. Get this DVD Player, you will not be disappointed!! On: 2001-07-30
In my opinion there are not many better DVD players on the market today, especially at this price. This DVD player offers features not found on other companies DVD players. Ive owned 3 DVD players including this one. One from ProScan and one from Sony, and I have never been as pleased as I am with this purchase. I have only used the component video outputs for my video signal, so I cannot comment on the S-Video, or the *other* connections (off topic - but if you are buying a DVD player, you must have a TV that has AT LEAST S-Video connections, otherwise buy a VCR) but the video picture is awesome, much better than either of the two DVD players I owned before. I also like that this is JUST a DVD player. It doesnt have the Dolby digital decoder, or the DTS decoder. I have all those options from my reciever which powers my surround sound, I dont need to spend another $100 dollars on a "Top of the line" DVD player. Not having the audio decoders is the only thing that seperates this DVD player from the "Top of the line" models. Anyone that owns one will tell you the same thing. On: 2001-05-01
I recently bought the JVC DVD player. The three disc tray is very helpful. It is a great looking machine. The JVC has good picture quality. It has quite a few extra features (most I will never use.) The price is what sells this. That is very hard to beat. It does have a couple drawbacks though:The remote control is awful. I dont know who designed it but it needs some serious improvements. Buttons our in awful places. Many buttons you will need to use our so small you have to be looking at the remote right up close to find it. The other main problem is the loading time. Once you put a new CD or DVD in, it seems to take forever to load. At the menu screens, you press a button and wait for about 7 seconds. This is much longer than it should be. Overall, I would recommend this product to people who want a new remote control and for people who have a lot of patience. Another reason, that great price. by: Anonymous On: 2001-03-13
I recently tested this JVC DVD player and I came away very impressed. For all of you cinephiles out there you will be pleased with the 3 tray system that is offered here. No more getting up off your couch and changing individual DVDs manually. The JVC model changes the DVDs without much fuss and within a matter of seconds. I was very pleased with how seamless this action took place. Every function from scene selection to scene advancement works within a split second. Even the initial DVD reading works very quickly and efficiently. I was really impressed by the speed at which this JVC DVD player works at and I think you will too. The DVD player has many "bells and whistles" (Many of them I wont use). I particularly liked the zoom feature, 3-D phonic sound booster (for those who have limited hi-fi stereo capabilities, and 16:9 anamorphic enhancement. The only drawback is the remote control. The size of the buttons (usually a big problem because most are too small) and placement of the buttons are fine. But the manual shifting to change menu commands and execute small tasks is cumbersome. You have to use TWO HANDS to operate and manipulate many simple functions for the DVD player. I mean, I feel like Im playing a video game just to operate the zoom control! Another drawback; and I hope many of you read this before you buy or complain when you do purchase this model, is the absolute necessity of having an S-Video hookup. You really need an S-Video hookup so that the DVDs are read correctly. For some reason the TV and DVD wont communicate without this hookup. I saw white streaking, screen freezes (nothing moves and you have to turn your player off and reboot; just like when your computer crashes), remote commands that wont work, and many other technical problems. Furthermore, dont hook up this DVD to your VCR at all. Dont even bother getting a RF modulator for this unit. It wont work properly. In closing, this is a very hi-tech piece of equipment for a very affordable price. If youre on a tight budget and dont want to spend a lot for a top of the line DVD player, I would highly recommend this product. I loved the ease of use and the picture quality is very good (although not at Sony standards). I think its a great buy for the money and I think I got the most bang for my buck.
