Pumps like a Sharp!     On: 2003-02-15

I had a Sharp 722 that i loved, unfortunately i beat the [snot] out of it snowboarding for 4 years. When it finally gave up the ghost i bought a Sony because thats all that retailers carry anymore..... it sounded like my 722 with the bass turned off and the volume at 75%, in short it was not up to the task of rockin me down the slopes like my old Sharp. So i bought this SR60 unit, it cranks just as hard as my old 722 it is a lot lighter and has all the same features except it only has 10 sec shock memory. So far this hasnt proved to be a problem, i shook it like crazy for a minute when i first got it and it only skipped once. Dont hesitate on this unless your into classical music only and you need to buy locally.
Not so good
by: Anonymous    On: 2003-01-29

I bought this minidisc player about two years ago, and since then, its broken twice. The first time, I sent it in and the people at sharp fixed it. The second time it broke, the tried to fix it, but when they sent it back to me, it still didnt work. Now, the lid to the battery holder has come off, and so it is completely worthless. This same thing happend to a friend who had the exact same model
Excellent Investment for your Music     On: 2003-01-17

Ive had this Minidisc recorder for at least three years now, and Ive never had ANY problems with it whatsoever. If you want to record MP3s from your computer, you need to also buy a Mini-to-Mini cord to go along with it...Id also reccomend buying some software to make it easier to record all your songs in order, and to keep them organized. ... The battery life of this recorder could be a little bit better, but considering that it comes with a rechargeable battery, I cant complain. Its extremely durable (I take it up skiing with me all the time.), and the remote comes in handy for things like this. Id reccomend getting a different pair of headphones, because the ones that comes with it are pretty flimsy. Other than that, its an EXCELLENT investment, and Id reccomend it to anybody!
Sync mode can be turned off. Unit is fine for live recording     On: 2002-08-07

An earlier review (July 9, 2002 by "an electronics fan") states that "you cant turn off sync mode." This is not true. You can record from any source, including a microphone, with or without sync mode.

When I first read the July 9th user review, I almost refrained from buying the SR60 because I intended to use it for live recording. Fortunately, I did a little more research (you can even download the user manual from ...) and was glad to learn that the unit would be suitable for my purposes.

I recently purchased an SR60 and have not been disappointed. It does an excellent job of recording live music.

Good sound, but not recording
by: Anonymous    On: 2002-07-10

I bought my Sharp minidisc player from amazon in 2000, and i thought that it was the best damn thing around. My thoughts stayed the same for a while, until i started recording myself and concerts that were leagel to record, like Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. I found that you cant turn off the sync mode. What the sync mode will do is that it will stop recording when there is scilence, or if it is not loud enough. So, i went to a jazz camp all about the learning, and the students were supposed to record the concerts at night. So i did and put my Senhizer Headphones in the mic input (the HD570 are great, in sound quality and they record as a mic would), and when the concert was not loud enough, than it would not recieve it because of the sync mode.
So, if you are looking for some good minidisc player that you will not be recording with, than these are the ones. The sound quality kicks ___. This is a good affordable pair, but if you are looking for some good live recording ones, than look at sony. But if you are looking for some that will record live, than these are definetly not the ones. However, they have great digital recording from the computer through the optical imput.
Where's the USB port???     On: 2002-06-16

AIGH!!! I wanted a USB port so bad so I could record my mp3s onto minidiscs, but sadly I couldnt. Its a shame that it doesnt have a USB port so you can fully tap into the minidisc power.

The battery doesnt quite last 7 hours. It lasts about 5 1/2 hours straight through, without turning off. Its good, but somedays you want that full 7 hours. This player has wonderful sound, better than a CD player. And it doesnt skip nearly as easy as a CD player. If it gets jostled a little too much, it does stop but it doesnt skip any note. Worth the money, even without the USB port.

Concept is fantastic... works great     On: 2002-06-06

I owned this for 4 months ... I day I got it I was (and still am) thrilled by all the features. The fact that it has rechargeable lithium is a great feature ... Anyway, other features are fantastic (burn from ANY source, small size, quality of sound, etc).

It is something which needs to be treated very delicately. It didnt feel sturdy and I suspected that before long Id be getting this thing fixed because it wouldnt play for some reason. Well, it still plays great but the battery case cover broke and I have to get that fixed.

I dont think you should pay the farm for the SONY ones - it has the 5 cds on one minidisc feature but not many people use it because you need a special disc which is $$$.

Stick with sharp. Also, I bought it for burning purposes and never really utilized the burner aspect as much as I imaged. I thought Id be burning like crazy and Ive burned very little. Stick with cd player

good 1st MD player/recorder - good for live recordings
by: Anonymous    On: 2002-05-29

this is my first MD player. ive been looking at them for a year and am mainly intersted in using it to record live concerts. i received it last monday and recorded my first show on tuesday. the sharp was a dream to use. its manual level settings allow you to adjust the rec. levels on the fly without interrupting your recording (sonys arent as friendly this way). this feature aids in capturing the performance and hushing the crowd noise between songs. the user manual was also very helpful in regards to determining what levels to use for recording and basic product use. you cant argue with the price either. the $ i saved on this little gem allowed me to spend a lot more on quality microphones so my recording sounded as good as many of the bootlegs i have that were fueled by high end DATs & nice pro-cardioid mics.
Fun and Easy to Use     On: 2002-04-09

This thing has loads of cool editing features and is extremely easy to use. The only drawback is that you have to enter the song info one letter/character at a time, which can take a while. Other than that, if youre looking for a good minidisc player, this is a good one to get. MiniDiscs are cheap, rewritable and hold the same amount of music as a standard music CD (74 or 80 minutes). The editing features allow you to easily move tracks, combine them, split one track into two, delete a track, edit the name, etc.
great and easy to use     On: 2002-03-28

i bought this player not really knowing what to expect,
when i got it i recorded my first minidisc w/o any trouble
the one drawback is that it doesnt come with a headphone to mic in cord, but it only costs 3$
you can edit, divide, move, and combine tracks
it only takes one AA battery and it comes with a rechargable on which comes in handy
Best Value for Money!
by: Anonymous    On: 2002-03-27

Its true - you DO get what you pay for. Fortunately for the Sharp MDSR60S, for what you pay, you get a whole lot. This sharp MDSR60S has to be the best value for money on the MiniDisc player/recorder market - HANDS DOWN!

Being new to the world of Minidisc recorders, I did a fair amount of research before deciding to purchase the MDSR60S. However - in all honesty - the main reason I bought it, was its affordable price. I bought it used (it was listed as a "same day return - brand new") from a reseller at Amazon.com... With the exception of the users manual which was missing (I later downloaded the pdf file online) the unit itself, the packaging and everything else was as its listing claimed "brand new".

I use the thing practically everyday. I DJ as a hobby, so I record my mixed sets directly from my turntables (and mixer) to the MD player. I dont know how I managed to get by without one for so long! The versatility of a cassette tape except with far superior recording quality and portability.

On one hand, the unit is very user friendly. All the connecting cables that you will ever need (with the exception of the cable used to record from one MD player to another) come in the box. The recording quality is excellent. Ive read (here on Amazon.com) some not-too-flattering comments about the MDSR60Ss headphones. Speaking as a weekend warrior DJ, I was pleasantly surprised at the great sound quality that these folding headphones produce (its even got some pretty decent bass). Sure bigger better headphones will sound better, but for the majority of folks, these headphones will be more than adequate. The 10 sec anti-shock memory is more than sufficient for moderate use (walking, driving), however I wouldnt expect to be able to go jogging (you probably need 40sec anti-shock for that).

On the other hand, the unit does not have MDLP (Mini Disc Long Playing) technology as an option, which means that your recording times are limited to the capacity of the actual Minidisc (74mins or 80mins). A MD player with MDLP have recording times which are something like 4 or 5 times greater than a MD player without. To be fair, I wouldnt expect to find MDLP in a unit at this price. Another drawback is the very "plastic-feeling" remote, which feels and looks about as sturdy as a feather. Some people may find the operating buttons a bit small - I have large fingers and find the buttons to be on the small side, but they are certainly not TOO small.

I do recognize that (overall) the MDSR60S is a piece of equipment that needs to be properly cared for if it is to last a long time, so to that end my MDSR60S comes out of its carry bag, only to remove or insert an actual minidisc. Other than that, it stays in the carry bag, which stays in a larger carry-pouch with the other accessories (minidiscs, headphones, spare battery etc.). I would rather the remote suffer the brunt of the wear-and-tear caused by regular use, than the unit itself. So far this arrangement seems to be working great. Ive had my MDSR60S for a little over a month and the unit still looks new and works great. The remote is starting the show signs of wear -which I expect because I use it every day.

If youre looking to buy a reasonably priced *first* MD player then the MDSR60S is for you. If you require longer recording times and greater anti-shock memory and you have...more money to spend, then the MDSR60S isnt for you. I know Ill eventually (when I can afford it) want to get a SONY or more advanced model SHARP with all the bells and whistles, but for now Im quite happy with my MDSR60S.

why me?     On: 2002-03-22

the first time i bought this md player, it would not record using
the optical line in jack. so i returned it and bought a new one.
which i was excited to have. all of the sudden, one day, i put
in my nice clean disc, and the player said, "no disc". what?
so i tried a different one, and it said "cant read a". so it
doesnt do anything!!! i have all these mini discs, and none
of them will play. i dont know why. i will not buy this player
a 3rd time. hopefully i will be able to get my $ back.
thanks.
Comes in handy     On: 2002-03-20

The Sharp has performed very well for me, and I dont have much to say about it. I mainly use it to record my playing sessions, and it captures what I need. It certainly beats any tape media.

Some upsides

Quiet
Reasonable battery life...mid-level MD player

Some downsides....

No USB
No backlit light
Buttons are not the most intuitive

Its too bad MD hasnt caught fire in the US. But it seems like all things, $$$ is a big factor, as CDs are much cheaper.

Perfect play-by-play     On: 2002-03-18

As one who covers baseball full-time, I yearn to hear every single pitch of every game I work at. While a friend purchased the mini disk player as a way for me to record music, I have taken full advantage of the LONG PLAY mode to record baseball games that I can listen to at later times, allowing me to spend time with family and friends and not a prisoner of a radio or internet connection.

The player is easy to learn and navigating through the menus is an easy task. The edit feature allows for some wonderful stories to be cut from 15 minutes with play-by-play mixed in, to one minute 18 seconds and the entire story told without one knowing it had even been edited down.

Sound quality on this product is also wonderful as I played a highlight from my home in Portland to my friend in Kentucky and she heard nothing but crystal-clear sound.

If you are using this product for audio, the LONG PLAY feature is definately for you. It would make a great purchase for pastors and other public speakers who would like a complete archive of their messages.

Only missing one thing     On: 2002-03-16

This Minidisc Player/Recorder has just about everything you would need in a Minidisc Player/Recorder ...and Im speaking only to the general public...not you pro or wannabe pro recording artists :(0

The only thing that I think it could use is some sort of USB connector or something...for easy use with computers.

Beside that, this thing is great...especially for the price.

not good compared to sony     On: 2002-01-21

ok for true musiic lovers and for those of u who are always downloading mp3s u dont want this u want a minidisc player with mdlp (minidisc long play technolgy) it lets u play 5 hours of music per disc and sonys have longer battery life up to 63 hours check out the mz-r900dpc [...] it is top of the line but for the price if u are a true muic lover it is worth the price or if not get one of the lesser modelsthat they offer there or here
i retract my earlier review     On: 2002-01-21

after see reading more into it i see that it is a decent md player the sony one is still beter but it does have mdlp
Extremely pleased with this purchase     On: 2002-01-20

This player/recorder has terrific sound, lots of features, and is very simple to operate (you do, of course, have to read the book). You will wonder how on earth you ever got along without it. Its also an excellent value, especially since it comes with an optical cable for for digital signal downloading and a rechargable battery.

Note: You will probably want to use your own headphones to really enjoy the sound, and if you require MDLP, 40-second shock protection (10 is more than fine) or illuminated displays, this is not your unit.

Everyone else will be ecstatic. This thing just makes your eardrums swoon.... Wow!

The Best Value MiniDisc Player on the market     On: 2002-01-17

This MD player is excellent it suffices all of my recording, and playing needs. It has very simple and easy to understand functions. It also had a very attractive price. You will not be able to get a similar MD player with the same functions for anywhere close to this price. A great buy!
Awesome Toy!

This mini disc player/recorder kicks serious byte!!! I read all the reviews on this thing, and it is totally better, for new users and for advanced. Everyone has to love this thing
mine was defective     On: 2001-12-17

i recently purchased one of these minidisk player/recorders and it was great for about the first month. After that it stoped recording and then stoped playing and then would not even read my disks.

I strongly recomend that you do not purchase it

Colin

overall, an ok tool     On: 2001-12-10

my problem has been with the battery--much shorter life between charges. otherwise its an ok tool that handles well.
Great buy!
by: Anonymous    On: 2001-12-07

This minidisc was absolutely fabulous. The recording quality is terrific and it is easy to use. Shipping was only 2 days, and it came in perfect condition. One slight snag is that it does not have a search function, within tracks but that is easily compensated for by the multitude of other options available. Really good buy, especially for the price!
get what you pay for     On: 2001-11-09

this mini disk player works good as long as you are care full.
dont "beat it up" like i did. after a year of having it the stop button dosent work any more.
p.s. id recomend a mp3 player only cause it dosent skip but i still like the quality sound it records better than a mp3 player.
I Love it!     On: 2001-10-30

Its my first MD player/recorder and its replaced my CD player. As a mp3 downloader, I cant live without it! I think its easy to use, but I dont bother with track titles. And I love the size and color. I recommend it to anyone who doesnt want to mess with a CD burner.
ok price, good md for beginner     On: 2001-10-11

I originally wanted the Sharp md 821. ... sold out and never got anymore. So the next affordable md was this one. It records mds and you can listen to them and thats about it. Not many extras. The thing i like about this md is that i can grab a freinds cd player and burn tracks from him. Or just get a cd and record favorite tracks from computer. But what i dont like about it is that after a full recharge the battery only last no more than about 4 hours. If you record without adapter...about 2 hours. Also the paint comes of the remote. It was my first md.Overall i like it alot.It fits in ur pocket unlike bulky cd players.I want something with more features,...
No Musician Should Be Without!     On: 2001-10-11

As a musician, I bought a BOSS BR-8 Digital Recorder to make song demos in my living room. I needed something to mix down to, and couldnt afford a DAT deck, as they run $$$ and up. I grudgingly tried the Sharp, and guess what? Its been awesome! My mixes go straight to minidisc via an inexpensive optical cable. No loss of quality at all.

I also record live shows and rehearsals using an old AIWA stereo mike from a high quality cassette recorder I used to own. The quality is excellent, way better than any cassette deck.

Unfortunately, no microphone is included with the unit. My only other complaint is that the buttons are small and not as easy to operate as you typical mini-cassette recorder.

Finally, I find it rugged. I carry it in my pocket, back pack and subject it to lots of abuse and after 6 months, it works fine. It does eat batteries while recording, though. Approx 1 alkaline per 74 minute minidisc, although an AC adaptor and a rechargable battery are included.

Great soud but not durable     On: 2001-09-13

I bought my minidisc player about 6 months ago. I do a great deal of travelling and was happy to have something so portable and light to carry with me. However, I found that the sharp MD player is not as durable as many other brands such as Sony. Moving from place to place I found that it was easily susceptible to dust, even with meticulous care. Within two months of being in the environment, my MD player began to skip ad now it works when it chooses to. a co-worker bought a Sony MD about the same time I did. His operated smoothly in this environment in the exact same conditions. The sound is great but be aware if you plan to do more with it than listen to it in your home.
More Advanced Than CD!!!     On: 2001-08-17

I am extremely impressed with my Sharp MD player/recorder. In my opinion, the sound quality is better than CD. The best feature, however, is the ability to edit any recorded tracks. Any track can be erased, divided, combined, labeled, or clipped. The tracks can be recorded to the MD in any order and then re-arranged at your whim. Tracks do not have be recorded in only one session. Tracks can be recorded (added and/or errased) as many times as necessary. This technology is extremely more advanced than any CD player or burner. It is a mystery why the MD technology has not caught on in the USA. I am so impressed with my MD player/recorder that I am seriously thinking of buying another one just like it just in case they go completely off the market here in the U.S. If you want the best that the world of music technology has to offer, buy an MD player/recorder. You will never go back to CD.
this kicks a$$

said it before ill say it again, this kicks A$$
Quality with few drawbacks     On: 2001-07-16

First of all, minidisc is perhaps the best new audio technology. The skip-free performance and recording ease of cassette, combined with the quality and capacity and digital advantages of CD. This SHARP unit I got about 7 months ago. Its performed marvelously, and as someone who previously owned an mp3 player (64MB Nomad that I spent $250 on) I must say, good riddance to them. I love being able to use a DVD player and the optical cable to record a direct copy of a CD to minidisc. The digital quality is maintained 100%, and track breaks are in the right places (theyre sometimes missed when recording analog, like from mp3s via computer soundcard). The battery life is phenomenal, considering it runs off of ONE NiMH rechargable or AA alkaline... for those who would complain, how long does your CD player last on TWO? Overall, its a wonderful product that will always be independently useful (it doesnt matter if MiniDisc ever "catches on" because everything you need is in this unit, you just need to be able to buy the discs) and it is a real attention-getter. "What on Earth is that?" the ladies say. I recommend this model completely.
Best Deal For The Money     On: 2001-06-24

I have had this MiniDisc Player/Recorder for about 6months now, bought from Amazon during Christmas. I have to say if you are looking for an inexpensive portable audio player this is the best choice out there. MiniDisc offers CD quality sound that is rerecordable over and over on a $3 MD that can run up to 80min.

For under $200, you get 10sec shock protection, a cheap feeling remote control with no backlite LCD display, cheap headphones, a rechargeable NiMH battery w/ recharger, and the unit itself. The battery on a full charge lasts roughly 6-7 hours on the default volume setting of 15. The unit is roughly 1 1/2 the size of a MD across, and 1 1/4 of a MD vertically. The buttons are placed logically and are easy to press as opposed to Sonys strange placement and small size of their fingertip buttons. The unit or/and the remote control can be "locked," so commands arent registered when you have it in your pocket or such.

Even though this unit was designed to be cheaper then competing units, I have to say I couldnt be happier. It offers the options that people need at a low price.

Some good things about the unit. -Its at a cheaper price then competing units, and supposedly SHARPs ATRAC sound compression offers better sound quality then competing Sony models of the same price range. -It comes with a remote control albeit a very cheap plastic feeling one. -Solid chassis, will not break easily. -A better choice then stupid MP3 players that offer poor sound quality and 4x the price when you include the cost of buying "memory sticks" -Most bang for your buck

The bad -Only 10sec shock protection. Yes you can walk and it will not skip. But jog or run and it will skip. Definitely not for those who plan to jog or exercise with this. -Has only about 6-7 hours of battery life at default volume level. If you listen to this on the street, you will have to set the unit to higher then the "default" level, thus draining more battery. So in reality, the real battery life may be only 5-6 hours. You get less battery life with an alkaline battery it seems. This little battery life may not satisfy everyone.

Most people get MD players to carry their MP3s. This is very easy with this unit. Get a stereo analog sound cord with a male head on each end. Plug one side into the unit, the other side into ur sound cards LINE OUT (or SOUND OUT). Then just set the unit to autosync and play your mp3s. This SHARP unit will automatically cut a new track when necessary. Thats a PLUS!

Cheaper and with better sound quality then a MP3 player, the convenience of rerecording millions of times on a $3 MD over the burner/CD combo. For this price and the options this unit offers, this is a best buy.

An Awesome 5-Star Minidisc Player
by: Anonymous    On: 2001-06-18

When I saw this minidisc player at such a fantastic price, I had to buy it from Amazon. It took just 5 days to reach me and I couldnt wait to open the box and fire the sucker up. Everything worked great; it is so easy, yet there are many useful features. Recording is as easy as plugging it in and pushing record. The only thing that could be better about recording with this product is that it only records at one-times speed, which means that if you record a 40 minute CD, it will take you 40 minute to record. But, overall I love this model. I give this Sharp minidsc player 5 stars.
Had a Sony...This is as good if not Better     On: 2001-06-05

My original Sony stopped recording... Went for the Sharp if only to record. My surprise was that this has many pluss pver the Sony...higher line output, easier editing, better, longer battery and AA batteries WITHOUT the screw-on case. Skipping...NONE. The main reason I have the thing(s) is that I have 4 acres of yard to mow (2 hours) over alot of bumbpy terrain on a fast moving industrial rider...not one SKIP in three weeks. Why spend the extra money!!! Yes, a little larger than Sony, but I dont have a problem with it.
DON"T BUY THIS PRODUCT     On: 2001-05-17

At first, I loved this thing. I mean, I got it for a great price and it came with all this cool stuff. However, after about a month, I started noticing how cheap this product was. I mean, it would skip as I was walking. Now that I know how cheaply made this product is, I wish that I spent the little extra cash to get a good quality MD or even an mp3 player. I made a bad mistake and you shouldnt make the same mistake either.
Think twice before purchasing     On: 2001-05-04

I just purchased this player, and for the most part it works fine; however, I did have some difficulties recording. My first few attempts of recording a CD to MD resulted in many skips.

Do some research on the internet. Apparently, I am not allowed to post a URL on my review, but there are discussion boards on Minidisc players. I found a site that had about 15 complaints about this devices problems with recording. They ranged from skipping, to errors to problems not being able to recognize certain brands of minidiscs.

I suggest buyers to spend a bit more and find a more reliable product.

GREAT GADGET!
by: tom44    On: 2001-05-04

I am somewhat of a gadget freak, and this is my most prized posession. I teach music and record all of my own concerts and the quality is incredible. Sharp has made this unit user friendly and sturdy! What a great gadget. 5 stars!
Excellent MiniDisc Recorder     On: 2001-05-03

I bought a Sharp MDSR60S from here on Amazon, and I couldnt be happier. I spent a lot of time reading reviews of all the various units on the international MiniDisc website, and I finally read enough negative things about the Sonys (along with lots of positive things) that I decided to go with this less expensive Sharp.

I wanted a MiniDisc mostly for recording myself live, and the Sharp fits the bill wonderfully. I find the features quite intuitive, and although somewhat time consuming, even labelling disks and tracks isnt bad; it doesnt bother me that you cant label tracks while recording, like with the Sonys, but that does seem to bother lots of people. Recording is wonderfully easy, and although the buttons are small, even with my large hands I dont have trouble with them. In addition to recording vocal performances, I did try dubbing a classical CD to minidisc, and that turned out great as well. The sound quality is outstanding, and the supplied cables were perfect for me, although I did use a miniplug to miniplug cable that I already had to dub from my portable CD player.

Although other reviews say that the unit is all plastic, it feels very solid to me. I dont carry the unit around that much, and although it isnt tiny like the new Sonys, it fits comfortably in most of my shirt pockets. I dont jog or walk around with it much, but I do sometimes carry it in my pocket while listening, and Ive yet to have it skip. I read about lots of drawbacks to the Sonys 40 second anti-skip and extreme power saving techniques. I usually have it plugged in to the AC adapter, but Ive gone long periods between charges when just carrying it to listen to. The fold-up headphones fit nicely in the little bag, and together with the MD player, I find that they will fit in most of my shirt pockets, as long as I dont have anything else in there. Although I didnt expect to, I like the sound of the headphones, and I find them surprisingly comfortable, although I dont usually listen for more than an hour at a time. The remote is minimal, but when I want to use it, it works fine, although I do tend to push a button when clipping it on. Backlighting would be nice on the main display, but I decided not to pay for it; similarly for a backlit remote. The one feature I wish it had was digital output, but only the highest end component units have that. I would say the feature set for the price is outstanding.

I would give the Sharp MDSR60S my highest recommendation. I love it to death.

it is great     On: 2001-05-02

This mD is the best out there
Great Find for the Money     On: 2001-04-26

I just bought one here at Amazon, and I have to say, its better than I expected. I was a little weary of this model after reading several complaints in a few MiniDisc discussion groups. There was a common problem with recording errors, but in each case, people who later tried Sony minidiscs in their Sharp recorders said everything fixed itself. So, I went to the store, picked up some Sonys, and everything works beautifully. Not an error yet! As for sound quality, the 24-bit ATRAC sounds great! Before this, I had a Sony mzr-37. The comparison of sound quality isnt even close. Sharp wins, hands down! The digital bass boost is very good, too. It doesnt muddy-up the bottom end until you turn it to max boost. Now, there are some trade-offs for the inexpensive price. The entire chasis is made of plastic. However, for being plastic, this unit has a really solid feel to it. The in-line remote (also plastic), does NOT. It feels like it could snap in half if a stiff breeze were to come along. (The saving grace is that it is relatively low-tech, and there are no vital/breakable parts housed in the remote itself.) This recorder is also heavier and larger than new units by other companies (and somewhat of a battery-hog), but then again, other companies are charging much, much more. (It also lacks MDLP, but anyone who expects MDLP in this price range isnt thinking very clearly anyway!:) CONCLUSION: The best deal in minidisc right now. The sound of these recorders is great, and the functions are very useful. Not the most attractive recorder out there, nor the sturdiest, but heads above anything NEAR its price range.
No Complaints

You may read my other reveiw for this product, but my opinions have changed. Im the other San Francisco guy, lower on the page. Too bad you cant edit a reviw once its finished.

The remote is fine, and the buttons are positioned so you can press them without looking. Everybody complains about this MD player not having a LCD screen on the remote, but, after some homework, I could not find a MD player with a LCD remote for less than $230. Is it worth the extra moolah? The bag is normal for MD players, they all are alike, exept Sony sews on a leather logo. The bag is the perfict size, but the Sonys Ive seen can fit three in them. That extra bag gets in the way, making me appreciate mine more (If you cant follow what im saying--the bag is without fault).

The battery life is short, but with my average use (walking to and from school) it lasts 3 days. When it gets low, I just plug it in when I go to sleep, it stops charging automatically. Great feature.

That brings up the other thing-- only 10 seconds of anti-shock memory. That is probably the least amount that you can have in a MD player, because the disk eventually gets fragmented, and you have to skip around. When I walk, the natural position for the MD player in my pocket is vertically, battery case down, headphone jack up. The laser is on a track that runs vertically also, so when I walk, the laser slides around the track, pulled by gravity when it is bouncing up and down in my pocket. After a few seconds of this torture, The MD player cannot function. No problem, I just turn the Unit horizontaly, and it works fine, even if I run. Baggy pants helps, but I dont know if you could stick this thing sidwards if you were a girl wearing tight-fitting pants.

The headphones are worthless. Litteraly. They sound like they look like. I listened to them for about a month, but they did not survive a karate-chop from one of my friends. I went out an bought a $20 pair of headphones the same setup, (in-ear folding) and they have TONS more bass. They contend with my 30mm Professional ones. I strongly reccomend that you purchase a seperate pair of headphones, it makes it sound soo much better. Give the ones that come with it to your little brother. Just in case you want to follow up on what im saying, the headphones I bought were Sonys MDR-A34. Well worth the greenbacks.

we need more choices

... this sharp only offers 10sec skip protection... the new sonys not only offer 40+, but have new recording speeds so you can record more minutes on one disc, much like vcr speed. Waite until amazon offers the newer models.
Question     On: 2001-04-10

Sorry but this isnt a review it is a question. I want to buy this MD player badly because I have heard great things about it but I need to know if I will be able to use it. I have line in, and line out ports. Are these the digital ports the player uses to record?
minidisc players ar the best     On: 2001-04-07

i dont own this md player but i have an older sharp md15. In general, minidisc players are the best portable gadget ive ever owned. Perfect sound quality, convenience and compact too. ANd talk about cheap - 74 minutes of music (a blank disc) costs about a dollar (bought in packs of 20). Forget about the MP3 players where you have to buy expensive memory to get anything more than 2 hours of music. Make as many mini-discs as you like or record over old ones without degradation of sound quality. Easy to record mp3s onto discs or copy your CDs. I copy mostly mp3s downloaded from the internet, but also some CDs and some news programs (selected shorts, marketplace, etc)right off the computer so i can lsiten to them later. Heres my tips for you: * get the best and longest extended warranty you can. Mine has broken and had to be replaced under warranty once. * if you run with mine it will skip unless you hold it in your hand while running, then it works fine. get the nickel metal-hydride rechargable batteries, anything else drains too fast * dont drive with the headphones on - $75 fine in Washington State (and saying you know Jeff Bezos wont get you off, either) * easily plugs into your home stereo or computer to play atCD quality. You can do anything with these things. All with one portable player and a couple of cables. * check out a website by a MD officianado called Houston Viper. He will answer your questions about mini disc players. Very helpful.

These things are so much fun, its makin a kid out of me again.

Music Lovers Best Kept Secret!     On: 2001-03-02

I have owned a Mini Disk recorder player since they were first introduced. The MD format is versatile, user friendly, inexpensive, and sounds just as great as a CD (except to those with golden ears). Record your own favorite mixes from your CDs. When you get tired of them, erase all or part and rerecord. Listen to cool sounds while you exercise or run, without annoying dropouts and without lugging around relatively huge CD players. Add a cassette player accessory and play your MDs in your cars cassette player. Better yet, buy a MD player for your car and have it all. Best of all, it you are into making your own recordings, take a MD with you on a nature vacation (record elk bugleing, bird calls, waterfalls), to a party, or to a concert. They are very small, light, easily concealed, and work on batteries long enough to complete your task. MDs may be underrated and undersold, but to the music lover, they are an essential, awesome sound machine.
Get with the program!!!!!     On: 2001-02-23

Okay...heres the deal. I have this item, bought it a while ago and wish to share my infinite wisdom. Firstly, minidisc players are the greatest tool for any music fan that has the will and patience to create a vast music library. Arent you sick of fumbling around with crazy amounts of CDs and not being able to create your own playlist? I was having the same problem until, through divine intervention, I happened to fall upon the Sharp Minidisc and its world of posibilities. Ive convinced every one of my friends who hasnt spent all their money on beer and porno mags to purchase one right away. And believe me, they havent been sorry. So just collect all that loose change you have under the couch cushions and buy this ... right away. ...
Great Value...minor details

When I bought this Mini Disc player, I was really psyched becuase it looked really cool and it was so much cheaper than other mini discs on the market. The player has pretty good quality, and although it is not the lightest or the skinniest... it doesnt really matter because the playback quality is great. I agree that it should come with a blank mini disc because I really wanted to use the player right when I got it. The head phones are really cool because they fold up but they arent the sterdiest. The remote is a little cheap but its honestly not that bad. This mini disc is soooooooo definitley worth the price but the cords they give you, didnt connect with my CD players or Stereo but just go to ... and theres not problem. BUY THIS PLAYER
the best value for a player on the market!!!!     On: 2001-02-07

Though at first I had many reservations about buying a music technology that was less than 20 years old, I must say, I couldnt pass up such a great value for a minidisc player/recorder. The sound quality is excellent, the recording length is great and the design is stylish. One of my favorite features of this minidisc player is the fact that I can burn my own cds onto minidiscs! I make mixes as well as record whole cds. If youre not farmiliar with mds, this products directions are very detailed and helpful. All in all, I think that this product is great. BUY IT!!!!!
TIGHT...     On: 2001-01-12

I would definitely recommend this product or any mini disc player over an Mp3 player. I m still in middle school where it is against the rules to take anykind of electronics to school, but since this mini disc player is so small, it is very easy to hide from teachers and the like. i have not been caught in 5 months due to the small design. however, even though it is small, this player still has a lot of features. also, this is the best looking mini disc player out right now. . . . It has a lot of accessories including collapsable head phones, inline remote, RCA plugs, and a TOSlink cable. two problems that do not really bother me but mite bother you are the fact that the battery life is very short and that the remote is kinda cheap. the recharagable battery however is very tight because it does not need a battery charger to recharge. all u have to do is plug the mini disc player into the ac adapter and hit the STOP/CHARGE button. overall, this is the best and most affordable mini disc player on the market.
Good product     On: 2001-01-09

The Sharps MDSR60S Portable Minidisc Player/Recorder is definately a good buy. Unfortunately the battery lasts like 3 minutes (sarcasm) when you start turning it on and off, Turning it on, off, or randomly switching tracks takes ALOT of power. Despite the fact that it has terrible battery life this is definetaly a good buy,it has a user friendly setup and naming the tracks is simple. I would say that this is one of the better models. WORD OF ADVICE: if your computer or CD player doesnt have the line out plugs (meaning the 2 outlets the red and white plugs go into) then dont sweat it. You can go to Radio Shack© and buy a 4 dollar mini-plug to mini-plug connection. The sound is almost CD quality (I can only tell the difference if I turn the the volume up high and I recorded the song on a high volume). I would deffinetally recomend Sharps MDSR60S Portable Minidisc Player/Recorder. Hope this helps! Oh yeah, I dont think that the Sharp is making this model anymore, but if you can find it, buy it.
Excellent deal on portable MD     On: 2000-12-25

The Sharp MDSR60 is an exceptional value for a portable MD. I was pleasently surprised at how complete the accessory package is. Not only do you get headphones and a remote, you also get a TOSlink cable for making digital recordings and a 1/8" stereo to 2 RCA adapter for recording or playing back to a stereo system. A cute little bag to store the unit also comes with it.

The only minor quibbles I have are (a) it doesnt come with a minidisc. It would be nice to have a blank disc with a demo song or two on it (b) the remote is not backlit and feels like cheap plastic.

I plan to use my mine primarily for recording my own concerts - much cheaper than a .portable DAT machine

One of the best you can buy     On: 2000-12-12

The Sharp MDSR60S Portable Minidisc Player is one of the best Minidisc Player one can find on the market. Combining the quality and the price and comparing it other Minidisc players you will realise its more than worthed.
Great MD Player at a great price
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-12-12

This is a great MD player/recorder will sleek looks and good sound quality. For the price, the accessories package that comes with this unit is probably the best on the market. You get a rechargeable battery, a charger, a case, an optical cable, a remote, and a pair of pretty decent headphones, and all for (a good price). Compare that with other MD units and you will see how much more of a bargain you are getting with the MD-SR60.

Sharp has always been good with recording and playback capabilities on their MD players and this unit is no different. Unlike some Sony units whose playback volume tends to be too "weak," the Sharp MD-SR60 plays recordings loud and robust. The remote is also an added bonus, although a LCD display on it would have been nice.

Aesthetically, this unit is as nice as they come. Its not the smallest or the lightest, but considering the built-in, multi-function battery compartment, this unit is pretty compact.

With the MP3 craze lately, I would definitely recommend and MD player over a MP3 player anyday. Not only can MD players record MP3 songs off your computer, but they provide many other functions as well (voice recordings, digital CD replication).
