Works great - but it isn't as good as an iPod!     On: 2007-10-24

Works great - but it isnt as good as an iPod! Of course when I bought this, the iPod was still new. This works well and I enjoyed many hours of music from it. Of course, I like my iPod far better, but the Expanium still works great. It is a rugged little CD Player.
Best Electronic Appliance I've Ever Owned!     On: 2007-06-17

I bought one of these about 6 years ago and I cant believe how durable it is. I plugged in some external speakers to the headphone jack and I go to sleep everynight listening to MP3 discs on this. Eight hours a night times six years equals 17,520 hours of playing time! Thats just crazy! I would have expected this player to break down years ago with the heavy use I give it, but it still plays fine. Plus it looks great and is simple to use. I plan to buy another one of these when my current one stops working, but the dang thing just keeps going!
i m irritated lately with this product.     On: 2003-11-02

sound quality is incredible this is philips....if i compare price and sound quality the result is perfect.
Bad! Bad! Bad!     On: 2002-11-03

What are BAD player, even EXP103 is better than it. Stupid anti-shock, alway skipping while walking, No problem on SP50, Casio PZ5000 and TDK Mojo. ok, skipping, annoying, It skips wonderfully will do mix songs (When I llisten to dance music while walking, it will mix up another track music into my ear. pre-LOAD the wrong track for anti-skip.) Oh my god, Willie Nelson sings a song with Mcdonna (Sometimes Chinese singer sing with Lee Ann), this player done a good job, I have never think they have a song together.
No good with no navigation screen.
whats good, batteries life, sound quality (When you non activitely). Riovolt SP50 SP90, with no good sounding. didnt try SP250 and SP480.
wasted my $.
I got a failed unit     On: 2002-09-21

Unfortunately, I have to say, Im a Philips product owner.
My dad bought me a Philips Expanium 201 mp3-cd ....
For my deception, when I started to use it, strictly following the users manual instructions, I began to experience problems when using the unit.
The sound quality is poor, sometimes the unit doesnt read new CDs in perfect conditions, sometimes when i skip two or more tracks, the unit start locks up and then turns off, and whats worst, often the unit starts to play audio at high speed, like getting crazy.
Im really disapointed, because i thought that Philips only make good quality products, but this unit doesnt work for nothing.
... i think it was really money for nothing.
All that you need IF...     On: 2002-08-03

This unit is all that you need if your concern is: 1- Low price, 2- more than average quality 3- MP3 compatibility 4- easy to use. I got this unit thinking in the above thinks and I am 100% satisfied. But if you wish to have a better sound, just get a better unit. I am happy with this one, i can play my music any place ...
Considering the price this is a superb product.     On: 2002-07-10

What can you buy for [money]? This CD PLayer has a great sound, hours of playback, good quality and dont forget that Philipps were the inventors of CD technology. Yes, it lacks of some features that others have as the SONY MP3 Player but it costs around 375% more. For the price it should be any complain, saving your daily spare change you might be able to buy it in two weeks!! Bottom Line: Good price, great product!!
Never again     On: 2002-07-07

My kids recieved 2 expanium mp3 players for Christmas, they are now both in the trash because they wouldnt play, they would only read oops on the digital display. With only about 10 to 30 hours play time my daughters gave out, my sons held out for about twice as long. One bright note on the car adapter kit supplied, they work excelent with my 6 year old, been everywhere, beat up, abused Sony CD player.
I Haven't received my mail and rebate     On: 2002-06-27

Actually i have purchased this product before one month. But i havent received the rebate amount yet.
So kindly send me the same.

Thanks

accessories not included     On: 2002-06-08

I really like the Philips Expanium cd/mp3 player because its compact and the sound is great. But the only thing I am not satisfied with is, it has no belt clip or adapter and its inconvenient to carry around and the battery use doesnt last but a few days.
The BEST     On: 2002-06-03

I own a original EXP103, and it is great. Of course, I bought it while the CDRW and MP3 tech was still over [dollar amount], but it is money well spent. Competing technology did not have the features i wanted on the EXP. For instance, the Resume/Hold, Two output jacks, and full car/home kit. A competitor at the time, the Rio VOLT had features i wanted, like BackLight and Title display, and a navigate button, but the EXP had the main features i needed. If philips would release a model with all those features, i would upgrade in a heartbeat. For those who dont like the EXP, you dont know what you are talking about. If your MP3s are skipping, it is because your recorder [stinks], not the player. Buy new discs and recorder then try again. For audio discs, make sure the ESP is on, and because the player is very sensitive, excessive jarring associated with running is not recommended for CDDA (Audio CD) discs. MP3 cds will play without skipping 99.9% of the time with even Bumpy-road jitter.
Quality Product     On: 2002-05-18

One of the best portable players I have had, except they did not include the adapter or the belt clip!! Sound is great, made well and simple to use.
Forget about it     On: 2002-05-16

I hate this cd/mp3 player. When I open the package,I cant find the belt clip and AC/DC adapter. And 45-Second Antiskip is [bad].One more thing, the color of LCD is not orange, just the normal LCD.
Dissapointed...     On: 2002-05-03

I bought this player last week and im really dissapointed. Its skipping all the time and during 5 days i havent heard any whole song. when its starting to skip you need to stop for a while otherwise you wont be able to hear anything. and forget about running...
I love this CD player. What's with all the complaints?     On: 2002-05-01

I paid 15 dollars for just the cd player without the kit. i use it in my car all the time. First of all, it does skip, sometimes. I had the same problem where it kept speeding up. But i cleaned the disk and the sensor and it ended up working fine. For the money I paid, it does its job. I was thinking about splurging and spending 150 dollars on one, but then realized that I really dont need to spend that money. Anyway the pros and cons are listed below

Pros:

*CHEAP
*Excellent sound quality
*Looks pretty cool
*Great surfing (for a non ID3 tag cd player)
*Good volume
*I like the button placement

Cons:

*Sometimes speeds up (skipping)
*NO ID3 (but you get what you paid for)

The pros do outweigh the cons, and I would recommend this to anyone.

Good Balance
by: Anonymous    On: 2002-03-05

pros: Great sound quality, user friendly, powerful earphones, great look.
Cons: no tag id display, skips easily when its carried in a pocket,

im using it in my car and it doesnt skips when im driving evwn thought the streets here are full of holes, so, so far a good purchase

Very good, few problems     On: 2002-02-17

I found this to be a solid mp3 player with all features working as promised. I dont use the resume feature, so i dont know about any problems with it, but i had no problems with sound quality or skipping. I did have a problem getting "easy" cd creator to preserve the correct file ordering, but then i started burning my cds with nero, and my problem disappeared, so i dont think this is a problem with the cd player. The only quirks i found is that sometimes it doesnt find all of the mp3s on the cd, and the base boost is a little flat compared to other players. Also, its (...) expensive.
Excellent player     On: 2002-02-17

For the price of this player, you cant go wrong. Plays MP3s in any format, and comes with a great set of earbuds that carry the bass better than a homeboys car. The shock protecton is solid, I took it and slammed it on a table and it didnt skip once. It doesnt have the bells and whistles that a RIO Player has, like song display or direct-CD playback, but thats fine. The volume is much better than it is on a RIO, and its about 150 less. As for the person that had trouble with the player, may I suggest an exchange, it sounds like you got a faulty player.
RESUME PLAY???     On: 2002-02-14

I like this portable mp3 player but the RESUME button ... ...I use this player in my car and when i turn it off and come back, it still goes back to song no.1!!! the only way the RESUME works is if you switch it on while you are on playback mode and you have to do it every single time, unlike other brands where you just leave it on RESUME and it will ALWAYS continue where you left off! isnt it kind of pointless to have an mp3 player that will always go back to song no. 1??? thatll over work the NEXT button....
Great Product!!     On: 2002-02-14

I hate to contradict most everyone else, but this is a great product.

I havent experienced any of the skipping problems that others have mentioned. Bought the player for use in my old Ford pickup. The alignment and tires are so bad that I can watch my five-year-olds cheeks jiggle as we go down the road; but this player doesnt miss a beat. Sound quality for both standard CDs and MP3s is superb.

I suggest maybe other folks are having problems burning their CDs. For audio CDs, burning any faster than 2x is not recommended. It is also suggested you spend a couple of extra bucks and go for the higher quality CD-Rs. Not the RW-CDs. You should also check your downloaded MP3s before you burn, they may be bad.

Yeeech     On: 2002-02-05

The EXP201 should be avoided unless you plan to use it as a desktop model and you get it for next to nothing. Want to jog? Prepare for audio torture: The skipping is atrocious, even with the apparently useless ESP feature on. I returned one for speeding up (think chipmunks) about halfway through some discs. The replacement does this as well. Also, I now note poor scratchy sound at the very beginning of most discs. The sound is OK when these problems arent in effect. The MP3 labeling system is a joke, just numbers and no way to skip ahead by more than one.
Don't bother with this - get the EXP103, but do read on.     On: 2002-01-26

The 201 is an attractive compact model, but...
I have owned 2 model EXP103 for about 1 year and they have terrific sound, no skipping, and great 8-10 hour battery life. Unfortunately, the EXP201 I bought skipped and the same NiMH batts lasted about 4 hours. Also more spin/rotation noise than the earlier EXP103 model. I do think Philips has the best drive system, based on my experience and reviews. I have bought and returned a couple other brands recently. I should just give up and buy a RIO and maybe try the EXP301. [...].
Terrible Product!!!     On: 2001-10-21

I have owned Philips products in the past, including a stereo which is amazing quality! This MP3-CD Player is so terrible! The quality is so poor it is a total waste of my money, so I returned the product! It skips constatly, as in every seconds when I am walking with it in my pocket or bagpack. Some tracks it will not even play on mp3 data cds I create on my computer. It wont display the title, only the number of the song which is a very poor feature. Also when I am walking with the unit it will sometime go crazy and start playing another track while I am listening to the current one. This unit is poor and I would not recommend it to anyone!
Thank goodness for returns!     On: 2001-10-18

To its credit, the EXP201 is an inexpensive CD player that also supports CD-Rs chock full of MP3 files. It basically means that you can carry 10+ hours of tunes on a single disc and enjoy those tunes on a single set of two AA batteries. I picked up one of these units yesterday and I returned it today for the following reasons:

1. Horrible sound quality. All my MP3s exhibited a random pop, click, or some other audio artefact during playback. And no, I wasnt listening to Oval, Microstoria, or any other Mego glitchery, and all these MP3s are 160 kbps CBR (constant bitrate) files that play with no problems in my PocketPC.

2. Stability issues. I used my unit exclusively in a car (a Ford Taurus, in fact, sitting in the front seat armrest) that did nothing but city driving. Admittedly, Houston streets have their share of potholes and bumps, but my wifes VW cd changer (which doesnt have the read-ahead shock protection) is far, far, far more stable than this player, which produced random skips with alarming regularity.

3. Navigation problems. The display on this unit is limited to numbers. Which means that when you create CD-Rs of MP3 files, you have to organize them in folders by either artist and/or album in order to be able to skip ahead albums worth of tracks at a time. Even at that, youd have to have a pretty darn good memory of what order (let alone which artists) the tracks were burned onto disc. Having to play Name That Tune with your own music collection is only entertaining at parties.

4. Compatibility issues. Despite the reported CD-RW compatibility, none of my DirectCD CD-RWs would register with this unit. Also, any regular CD-Rs created using the Joliet standard (which allows long file names) seem to have the file orders scrambled, as the file names seem to get truncated by the players operating system. In order to maintain track order, I had to manually rename 140+ files in EasyCD Creator (a bit of an oxymoron in this case) to 8.3 standards (trying to compose the disc in ISO9660 truncated the file names without maintaining track order).

So, there you have it. A nice try, but poor, poor execution. From what Ive read, the EXP301 series are significantly better in sound quality, skip protection, and compatibility, so you may want to spring a few extra dollars and save yourself a potential headache.

No Improvements
by: Anonymous    On: 2001-09-11

This unit does skip quite alot. The navigation is unacceptable, with it being strictly numeric, albums show as a number and track show as a number. Not good with close to 200 songs on a cd. ALso, how about a 10+ skip forward funtion? Would that have been to difficult?
Also, Philips site says it comes with a belt clip: It doesnt.
Also, no remote.
I will say, the overall sound is as good as Ive heard on a portable player. Just not good enough to overecome the deficiencies.
EXCELLENT! Hours of music using CD-Rs I already burned.     On: 2001-09-07

I can use the CDs i burned before I purchased this Player. PHILIPS has a winner here especially at this ... Price. Now I can enjoy my whole Music collect when I am traveling and all on few CDs. Although i have not tried it, this unit will also use CD-RWs which means I can delete and add music as I like to my CDs. And the options are many, shuffle, repeat, all in any combination. You cant go wrong with this one as a New Toy or as a Gift.
Philips EXP201 - UNACCEPTABLE     On: 2001-09-03

I bought this 2nd generation CD/MP3 player from Philips in the hopes they had fixed the problems which reviewers of their EXP103 described, mainly skipping. Dont waste your time -- they didnt.

Each and every MP3 will skip at 7:44 from the start, and every 2-3 minutes after that, even with the unit sitting solidly on a table (none skip when played from this CD-ROM on my computer). If every one of your MP3s is shorter than that then this might well be a fine CD/MP3 player for you.

Its display is strictly numeric, numbering directories on the CDROM as "albums" and files in them as "tracks". It read my Linux-written CDROM just fine, which has 1-level-deep directories and no files in the top-level; I dont know if it can handle more complex file and directory structures, but long filenames with embedded spaces are no problem.
