Great Value     On: 2008-04-28

I couldnt be happier. The Audio Source LS400 speakers look good and sound super. A great value for the money.
For the money is fantastic     On: 2008-03-20

I got this to go on the patio. I have pair of HUGE Sony SSFs in the living room and a stereo receiver is powering the Audiosource as speaker Bs.

The highs are very pronounced and clear. No apparant distortion. The lows are a bit weak when compared to the floor standing Sonys (yeah this is an unfair comparison) but still pretty good. Enough power to play any music at good levels without waking the neighbors.

Downside is the plastic bracket. Accepted a 14 AWG wire easily
Recommended.
Use by pool     On: 2008-01-27

Durable and light. I move them in and out to listen by the pool. Very good for low price speakers in this situation.
Best buy for the price     On: 2008-01-16

I purchased a pair of these speakers in June 2004. I cant believe the durability of these speakers! They are mounted on my siding and are exposed to weather. I do bring them indoors for the winter, including the plastic mounting brackets, but they get wet, get wind blown, you name it. They have been going strong for 4 years and Im buying a pair for my neighbor. The sound quality is not Carnegie Hall but its decent for cookouts or tunes while doing yard work. For the price, you cant beat it.
Outdoor speakers     On: 2007-07-21

These speakers are great. I had a pair outdoors for 5 years and am adding this pair up on the deck. It is difficult to believe such high fidelity sound can come from such tiny speakers that cost so little. Deep lows, brilliant highs. They sound great. And with neighbors who complain about music I have lots of speakers at low volume through out the house and yard instead of the main speakers on extra loud, this helps keep the neighbors from complaining.
outdoor speakers     On: 2007-07-12

These speakers sound great on my deck. They are loud enough for the outdoors and sound nice and clear - amazing for how little they cost. These are not for critical listening, however you wouldnt do critical listening at an outdoor BBQ anyway.
Good enough     On: 2007-06-27

Their cheap, they look good, and they work. In this case, they were good enough.

Very nice for the price     On: 2007-06-14

I bought these speakers to bring music out on the patio. I installed them on the ceiling of our covered patio and hid the wires with some of those wire-hiding tubes from Home Depot.

The speakers sound great. To be honest, I havent turned them up very loud, because I dont want to bother the entire neighborhood. But I havent noticed any problems with the sound.

When I purchased them, I was surprised at how big they were, but once I had them installed they are very unobtrusive.

They came with a bag of screws, but I ended up using my own, as the owns supplied arent meant for screwing into walls.
Be Very Careful With These Speakers

Ok, they aint Bose or Altecs. They are a lower end speaker. They are built like a lower end speaker. These are not meant to get rained on and they dont do very well for a long throw. The big thing is that the bracket that comes with them is plastic! Thats right, plastic!! The bracket will last a much shorter time than the speaker will. Dont bother with these unless you know in advance that they are lower end and dont expect the best performance. They also only come in white. Be aware of that too.

Great for the price

I didnt expect a whole lot given the low price, but they sound way better than I even expected. Contrary to a couple other reviewers, I find the bass response very respectable, given the size of the speakers. Theyre out on a deck mounted under the eaves, and provide a really nice sound for the outdoor area.

Amazing quality and durability for the price.

Amazing quality and durability for the price. I originally bought double the quantity because I assumed that each speaker must be sold seperately for this low cost.

One of my runs is over 50 feet and the sound is only slightly softer than my 20 foot run, and the clarity is consistant.

I have had these speakers for over 3 years with no problems.
Outstanding

These are (temporarily) replacing a pair of Altec Lansing speakers and I love them. I get the sound I need while the others are being refurbished.
FOR THE PRICE
by: hrfishheads    On: 2005-10-09

GREAT DEAL FOR THE PRICE. I DONT MEAN PUT THEM ON YOUR BOSE SYSTEAM BUT GREAT OUTDOOR SPEAKERS FOR THE MONEY.EZ TO SET UP AND MORE SOUND THAN YOU MITE THINK FOR UNDER $40.00
Not waterproof - "weather resistant"     On: 2005-09-20

Just make sure you know the difference. These speakers are NOT meant to get wet. They can handle being outside (ambient moisture, temp, wind, etc...) but arent meant to be directly in the path of rain or snow.

They are only really usable outside if you have large eaves/overhangs under which to place them.

The only reason I didnt give this item 1 star is because I probably could have found all this out if I had read the Amazon advertisement enough... and at least they seemed well packaged before I shipped them back.
Very good for the price     On: 2005-04-10

If youre looking for speakers to flood your patio with nice background sound without raising the ire of your neighbors, the Audio Source LS400s are a great choice. They are not the most powerful, but they provide excellent bacground music at a GREAT price.

Our home builder offers these same products through their installer, at about twice the price!
Imp. info     On: 2005-03-19

I cant rate/make comments on the quality since I havent used it after purchase. If you are planning to connect with a PC/laptop then these are not the right speakers which you are looking for. You need to have an amplifier/deck to make them work. I purchased to connect with my notebook and enjoy surround sound. I was amazed to see that there were no connecting wires. Then I called helpdesk and they told me that u should have an amplifier which will cost around 30-40 bucks minimum. I had to return it back since there are other speakers available in market which can be directly connected from a PC and save your pocket. May be I should have carefully read the specifications.
Good Sounding Speakers for the Value, chintzy enclosure     On: 2004-10-21

They stand up quite well to the outdoor elements under a protected area, yet dont seem to hold up well exposed to direct sunlight, especially in a southern exposure. Mine have turned a slight dingy yellow. The white plastic enclosure seems to be a dirt magnet, so regular cleaning will keep them looking bright. Aligning the speakers to the mounting screws can be a little tricky for the farsighted. And yes, you can pump plenty of music through them without the fear of blowing them out.
Great Sounding Speakers     On: 2004-09-03

I was skeptical about buying these speakers. After all,I was replacing 25 year old 27x18-54lbs speakers. I was impressed with the sound. We placed them in 35x45 foot bulding;with 15ft ceilings. At three quarter volume, they fill the room will clear, undistorted sound. They are definatley worth every penny. I seen speakers that cost more money and dont sound as good. Another good feature is that they are indoor-outdoor speakers which is good for me because they are in an unheated building. I would buy these again without hesitation.
Good Value     On: 2004-08-07

I have been enjoying these speakers outside by my pool for several months now, and the quality of the sound is excellent, particularly given the reasonable price. Im sure you can get better performance, but it will cost much more. These speakers are a rare find in todays business world -- something that is actually a good deal....
Great for $28     On: 2004-07-14

I got a pair open box at Sears for $28 and some change. These are on my patio and being driven by a Harman Kardon AVR325 receiver. The sound is hollow but pleasing. Nowhere near the sound quality of the Polk speakers in my home theater but those were about $100 a piece.

These will not make good mains nor will they make good surround speakers for any type of home theater system. They work great as a sound solution for a deck, patio, garage or other common area.

After All The positive Reviews, I had to leave mine....     On: 2004-06-22

I was in need of some outdoor speakers, and after reading all the positve feedbacks on these speakers, I just had to give them a try. I am glad I did. Hanging them was a breeze, and the wire to hook them up almost cost as much as the speakers! We are delighted with the sound. We had just built an above ground pool, and deck, and these speakers make outdoor activities great! They look great too! We have white siding, and they just about hide under the eavesment. You can crank them and really jam, and they dont distort too bad. But, if your like me, you just want them loud enough to enjoy the song, and conversation on your deck. If you are in need of great outdoor speakers, do not pass these up! Amazon makes it great too, with free shipping! Enjoy!
Very nice for the price     On: 2004-06-04

Great speakers for the cost. The brackets are plastic but the sound is awesome. I have these out on the deck and they work great! You get what you pay for but these arent your average $40 speakers.
Customer support is horrible
by: Anonymous    On: 2004-04-18

I bought these speakers and was very happy with the sound. However after a year one stopped working. I figured with a two year warranty, I would contact Audio Source for support. After numerous attempts to customer support, I never got a response back. The company apparenty sells these so cheap they cant hire anybody to help with repairs!!!
what can you expect for the price
by: Anonymous    On: 2004-03-25

Vocals/treble very thin(hollow). NO bass. I am running them with a 100 watt onkyo receiver for an extra room in the house. Thought they might sound a little better than they do, but they dont. I am giving them 3 stars just because of the low price, otherwise I would have rated them lower.
Good, but the LS200 is Better     On: 2004-02-15

These speakers (LS400) are pretty good. However, even though they are rated at 100W, and the LS200 at 50W (Both from Audio Source), we believe the LS200 speakers reproduce the audio frequencies more accurately. Both use the same 4" polypropylene woofer, but the tweeter arrangement is quite different. This undoubtedly is responsible for the better performance of the LS200. (The LS200 uses a mid-range and a high frequency tweeter as opposed to a single tweeter in the LS400.) The 50W capability of the LS200 should be adequate for most applications.

The mounting brackets supplied with both speakers are nothing to brag about, but, the LS400 brackets are made of plastic while the LS200 are at least made of steel.

The spring clip wire terminals work well (the same on both). These same clips are used on some much more expensive speakers.

These speakers are a good buy but the LS200 speakers are a bargain.

Nice for backgroud yard music     On: 2004-02-13

I live in the city and mounted these speakers under the eave of my garage; the sound fills up my small yard area nicely & Im quite happy with the purchase. The sound quality is very nice for low to mid-volume listening (think dinner party on the patio, suntanning, etc.) Over christmas we even turned them on to listen to Christmas music while hanging decorations and stuff, very festive -- the neighbors loved it! Overall these are pretty good speakers, especially for the low price. The other reviews are accurate with respect to their performance at high volumes -- if you want to really rock out the neighborhood, these may not be for you but overall my family is really very happy with these. My husband complained a little about the mounting brackets being flimsy but I dont see a problem, theyve been hanging securely since September!
Great sound for surrond speakers.

Everything in one box for hanging on the wall. Cant beat the price.
Not bad     On: 2003-09-23

I bought these speakers because we were looking to replace the behemoth tower speakers that came with our stereo, but didnt have the money to really get the best. Ill admit that I was a bit daunted by the price -- who knows what youd get. But after reading the reviews, I just couldnt pass them up.

At first, I was very impressed with the sound. After listening to a wider variety of music, I realized that the speakers are good... not great. But, you know, they really are impressive for forty dollars.

Im not an audiophile by any means. I did notice, however, that the sound is a bit "thin." I was hoping for something a bit richer, especially on the bass end.

Were going to keep them. Theyre great for what we need them for and, if we decide to upgrade to better speakers in the future, these will be *perfect* for outdoors.

Very, very cool!     On: 2003-09-13

Great sound at a great price.

Dont try to push the bass too hard or it will distort. It make a fine patio set for full, background sound.

It WILL NOT rock the house, but it does carry a nice toon.

Unbelievable value if you have reasonable expectations
by: Anonymous    On: 2003-08-22

I was looking for a pair of speakers to mount on the eave above my deck. Based on the reviews and the unbelievable price ...with free shipping I gave these a shot. I was not looking to shake the earth, just to enjoy moderately loud music on my deck and in my backyard. Ill agree that the brackets are a bit on the flimsy side, but as soon as I hooked everything up I was flat out astounded at the rich sound quality .... Sound quality is comparable to our ... Cambridge Soundworks ensemble speakers in the living room. I am especially thrilled about the lack of directionality (imaging?) as I was worried that I would have to mess with the balance a lot to get good stereo sound depending on where I was standing relative to the speakers but it is not a problem at all. Id buy them again in a second!
Wow!
by: Anonymous    On: 2003-07-14

Amazing sound for such a low priced set of speakers. They sound as good as my Boston Accoustics surround speakers. I didnt think they would sound that good outdoors but I was pleasantly surprised. Im going to buy another pair!
unbelievable value, great sound.     On: 2003-07-08

I bought these speakers because of the really low price and ... going on. I was and am still very surprised at the quality and sound from these things! Granted, I am using them as my rear channels in my home theatre, but still they are well built and when I did a seperate test during setup they sounded great. They certainly perform their needed function as rears beautifully. I would recommend these to anyone looking for easy to mount (wall, ceiling, whereever) and quality budget speakers. I have not and will not be using these outdoors, so I cant comment on that aspect of their performance.
Very nice for the price!     On: 2003-07-03

I was very surprised by the sound these speakers produced. They are not Bose but for the price they sounded great. I use them out side on my deck mounted just under the eves to keep them from getting too wet since they are just water resistant not water proof.
Great for the money     On: 2003-05-25

These speakers are quite nice. The have good sound and I doubt that you could find any thing better even at twice the price. I would not ever compare these to a set of Bose outdoor speakers, but then they are a fraction of the cost. They have a nice full range at moderate levels, but if you start to push them too hard the bass begins to break up. Not unexpected for a 4" speaker.

I have them mounted under the eves out on my back patio and they offer a great sound for background music. They make our backyard more enjoyable and fit our bill perfectly. I would recommend these speakers if you are looking for a nice pair of outdoor speakers at a reasonable price and you do not want to recreate a high end system outside.

One item of note is that they recommend that you mount these in a location where they are not subject to direct exposure to the elements. Im not sure what that implies here, but to acomodate their recomendation, I moved the location slightly to keep them out of a direct hit from the rain.

Good Bathroom Speakers     On: 2003-05-24

I read an earlier review that these speakers have to be protected from weather somewhat when used outdoors, so I thought theyd make fine speakers for the bathroom, and I was right.
Good Value     On: 2003-05-22

The Audio Source LS 400 are a pretty good sounding speaker for the price. They are not Weather-Proof, they are weather resistant - so they need to be mounted under an eve or overhang. The brackets are ... plastic. If you are looking for a speaker to rock the neighborhood - these are not it. If you are looking for a low price decent sounding speaker - then these are a pretty good choice.
Best bang for your outdoor audio buck
by: Anonymous    On: 2003-05-20

I have a screened in porch pre-wired for outdoor speakers.. putting in a pool and needed a decent set of speakers for that poolside, tiki-bar, parrot-head ambiance. Based on the reviews I read here, I decided to give these a try. Im very glad I did. OK, were not talking Bose here, after all, look at the price. On the other hand, Im fairly picky about sound quality. These little speakers are just a great value. Really nice sound.. seem to be well made.. easy to install. Definitely recommended for background party sound.
Good price, Good performance     On: 2003-05-18

Great sound for the money, connectors take bare wires or banana plugs. Crisp highs, a little light on bass, but expected for speakers of this size. Brackets are adequate, but I think a little cheesy. All in all, buy em, youll like em.
There GREAT     On: 2003-02-28

I purchased these speakers to try out, and they are great, I am going to replace the traditional speakers on the shelf and on the floor and mount these on the wall, out of sight out of mind.
I am so pleased that I am going to order another pair!!!!
Great speakers at an afforable price!!     On: 2003-02-01

The Audiosource LS 400 Speaker pair ...is a great value! The sound quality rivals speakers at a much higher cost. Clear, crisp highs and lows, a very rich music reporduction, especially when used with a CD or DVD, which makes it the perfect choice for home theater! I ordered two pair!
Awesome sound     On: 2002-10-07

I bought these speakers for my outdoor back porch. I couldnt believe the quality, considering the price I paid. I was calling people to recommend these speakers the minute, I heard them. These speakers are loud enough to fill up my back porch and my back yard.
Good Speakers at an Unbeatable Price     On: 2002-09-12

These speakers are mounted inside my back patio and driven by a 100W Sony receiver. Given their size and price, they produce very good sound, especially with rock/pop music (the treble is a bit too strong with country music). For use as patio/deck speakers to listen to music while you relax, barbeque, or swim, these speakers are a great deal.
Water resistant?
by: Anonymous    On: 2002-07-03

Good sounding speakers given their size. Was a little disappointed with the fact that they are considered outdoor speakers but are not waterproof. Youre expected to mount them under eves. Unfortunately, I wanted them mounted on the outside of a shed. Built a plexiglass cap to mount above the speaker to reduce the amount of rain it will be exposed to.
Clean & Clear Sound     On: 2002-04-18

$ for $ a fine deal. The sound is quite good for such a compact unit. Great for surround sound. Would need a sub-woofer to complete the system.
