Bose VCS-10 Center Channel - Speaker, home theater sound for component systems - Black By: Bose Average Rating: 3.0 Total Reviews: 30 More Information

I like the styling of the speaker, however it just does not have any range. It would be good for a very basic system. I have a pretty serious system and I had to cut the fronts down (Klipsch) to +5 and leave the center at +12 just to hear without issue.. It is not that it is not a good speaker - it sounds good - it just cannot keep up with my surround sound system. The delivery of it was fantastic - however I knew I was sending it back the same day. I have no problem with BOSE - just this speaker is showing its age - it has been around and not modified for around 10 years.. On: 2008-09-04
Theres a reason that Bose doesnt disclose the stats on their speakers. Its because they are very inefficient and basically only reproduce the middle range (in a muddy fashion). I sold my VCS-10 after 2 weeks and replaced it with a Klipsch..WHAT A DIFFERENCE! It was only $50 more, but is a light year better. Dont waste your money on this piece of junk, it will disappoint you. On: 2008-01-14
This center channel speaker works fine. I dont own any other Bose products, I dont particularly like or dislike Bose, and Im not an Audiophile. As other reviewers have mentioned, there are probably better-sounding center channel speakers for the price. I grabbed this one mainly because I appreciated its low profile styling; it is literally 3 inches tall. On: 2008-01-13

I owned this speaker for a year or so and I was never really satisfied with the quality, it looks like a million bucks - but the quality is not there on this one.
I had a hard time hearing dialouge without turning this way up. Eventually I started to notice sort of a tinging sound, so just for kicks I replaced the speaker w/ another I had in my daughters room - and POW, even that was better!
So I buy ANOTHER one, I figured maybe I had a defective one, it sounded the same. I returned it the next day for a Polk CS1, which is HUGE, so big Im putting up a shelf behind my big screen, but the sound... INCREDIBLE, I cant believe what Ive been missing, all along thinking I had a good center channel...
All I can think of is more and more is coming through the center channel these days, and this speaker doesnt handle it.
Trust me. Im not a Bose basher, I have 3 bose systems, I have 301s up front which are fantastic - this center channel is truly insulting. On: 2007-12-07
I bought this to fit on top of my Sony 50-inch screen. It fits (with help from Velcro to stabilize it). It takes a while before you realize how limited the frequency range--AND how critical it is. I thought since center channels basically carry dialogue why worry about the crash of cymbals resonating. Wrong. A soung engineer who lives in the building
chuckled when he said "Bose--no highs, no lows" Turns out thats an sound industry joke. The speaker looks great and the sound is clear. In retrospect, had it been less expensive I wouldnt be so tweaked. Its not good enough to really be happy with it, but not bad enough to replace it. Ill wait for some divine intervention. i have owned this center channel for almost 2 years now. It took me almost a year to finally get it to where it sounded good, as others have stated it was very quiet and nobody could really hear any of the dialogue. I recently purchased a new amplifier as this speaker is 4-8ohms and most amps are 6-16ohms. having an amplifier with a lower ohm rating will push more power per channel which will in turn make the speaker sound better, i also used 12 guage wire which may be a little bit big but it made the speaker sound 100% better i can now hear everything in movies with no distortion at all On: 2007-05-14

Ive had this as my center channel speaker for a couple of years now. My previous center channel was a Yamaha model and I was quite pleased with it, but at some point I needed to get something with a smaller footprint and I chose this Bose.
The big draw of the Bose for me was the shorter height, but Im not completely satisfied with the sound quality. The sound is a bit "muddy". Dialog doesnt seem as clear as it could be, and I sometimes feel like Im missing part of what is being said. I even had my hearing checked to see if I had a problem. I didnt thank goodness, but even so I decided to temporarily go back to using the Yamaha center channel.
To my surprise, the Yamaha center channel no longer sounded good. It sounded tinny and cheap compared to the sound from the Bose. So while I cant give the Bose high marks, its not the worst speaker out there. Im now using the Bose again, but due to its relatively high selling price, I cant fully recommend it. On: 2006-07-05
I own a Bose VCS-10 center channel. I would say that it is a good speaker for certain applications. You will find worst and your will find better. A few thoughts.
1) Many indicate that the speaker will sound better by adjusting your receiver. True. And that holds true for any speaker.
2) It is a slim design. True. At the same time, you can find a few others that are just as small or smaller. I would say that it is a matter of personal preference of style. What I find is that the Bose VCS-10 works out great with my old Sony 36" WEGA from 5 years ago. About the right size. But switching to a 55" widescreen...it doesnt look right and not integrated.
The best advice I can give is to go listen to the speaker for yourself and inspect the construction...and how does it fit in your entertainment center. Compare to other speakers for sound and appearance.
The biggest advice is in a home theatre...make sure to get an excellent center channel. That is where most of the action is and which will make a difference.
Bose is good, but I have moved on. On: 2006-06-24
I dont see whatis wrong with the unhit like some people are saying. It is great and really locks in the dialog. It is low so it does not block the tv screen. Maybe it is like the other guy said and you have to balance out your system. I used the Avia dvd and now all the speakers sound great On: 2006-06-03
I have no axe to grind with Bose. I originally bought this speaker for a custom cabinet with almost no room for a center channel set up. This speaker has an incredibly small footprint. If space is limited, this is not a bad option.
However, being honest, this is not a great center channel speaker. Choosing speakers is like the addage "certain horses for certain courses." Your budget, your room, your components - all play a part.
I have two home theater setups. One is a daily gathering area with basic in wall treatments from Polk Audio. The other is a dedicated theater utilizing Definitive Technologies with B&K Reference 7.1 Processing. Clearly the Bose VCS-10 can not hold its own with my larger setup. However, I have run it with my Polk Audios and it was workable. The timbre match was slightly off and the vocals were not as sharp as they are with my Polk CSi3 but it was not awful.
My bottom line - you can certainly buy a better center channel speaker. Can you buy a better one in this price range. I think so - if you are only focused on the quality of this one speaker and not the blended sound of your system. You should always buy the best components within your budget - but remember you are building a system - its not just about one speaker. If this speaker fits your space and (more importantly) matches your other speakers, then it may be the right speaker for you. On: 2006-06-02

I purchased this speaker about four years ago to complement my Bose main speakers for my surround sound set up. At that time, I felt the sound quality was pretty good but over the years as I listened to other center channels that other people had in their home theater set ups I came to realize that the Bose center speaker sound quality was not up to par. So last year, I purchased a Polk center speaker and the improvement in sound quality is absolutely insane. The Polk speaker which costs the same as the Bose ($199) was far and away the better product. The sound is cleaner, crisper, sharper...it made watching movies much more enjoyable. I couldnt believe what I had been missing out on all these years. The only reason I purchased the Bose was to match my speakers but that was a mistake because the sound I have now with Polk center and Bose main is excellent. Depending on who you ask, the center speaker is the most important speaker in a home entertainment audio system. If thats true then I wouldnt recommend Bose because all youre doing is buying the name and not the sound quality and to me thats a waste of money. I know because I made that mistake. On: 2006-05-11

I agree with those of you suggested that placement of the center speaker and proper adjustments to your home theater system are important factors in order to fully enjoy the BOSE or any center speaker.
To those suggestions, I would add two more-- ensure that your speakers are compatible in terms of having a similar voice. In other words, there should be some voice similarity between the center speaker and the surround speakers (particularly the rear ones) to bring out the best from both sets of speakers. Hence, I would suggest purchasing the BOSE VCS-10 with the BOSE Model 161 speakers as rear surround speakers. All together, great sound for the price; no noticeable harmonic distortion.
My second suggestion: make certain that your speakers can handle the output from your receiver or amplifier. If your receiver puts out more than your speakers can handle (particularly at a high volume), you will likely ruin your speakers. If the receiver cannot deliver what the speakers can handle, the resulting sound will be of a poor, muted quality.
Like another reviewer, I do not like the VCS-10s plastic housing; but plastic or laminate is used on many brands of entry-level speakers.
I, too, have had great experience with Bose speakers-- I have two pair: 201s and 301s bookshelf spekers; along with two pairs of KLH floor speakers (with 15" woofers!) and a pair of Cambridge SoundWorks Newton S300 surround speakers.
With all of this said, I did NOT purchase the Bose VCS-10 as my center speaker.
It has a great sound and was tempting, but I prefer a richer, fuller bass. Therefore, I opted to purchase a KLH Platium 525 center speaker-- it has larger woofers, similar in size and voice to my Cambridge surround speakers and complements the other, larger speakers connected to my Sony home theater unit.
Choosing speakers is really a matter of deciding the type and richness of sound that one wants (and can afford) to hear from a stereo or home theater system. Each of us have our own preferences.
The Bose VCS-10 rates 4 stars in my opinion, vs. the 5 stars I will give to the KLH 525 center speaker (once I write that review). On: 2006-03-01

I bought this speaker about one year ago from Best Buy, very disappointed. The sound quality is terrible, I have two presence channel $15 KLH speakers that sound better than this. No high end speakers have cabinets made of plastic, hence why Bose is not high end. After a year of misery on my ears, Ive replaced this with a Paradigm center speaker that only cost $20 more, and the difference is not even comparable. Do not buy this, or any Bose product at all. Save your money and buy Paradigm, B&W, or similar, most of the time they cost a little bit more, but sometimes actually less and are actually high end speakers, and you will get your moneys worth. I have an older set of the Bose cubes (plus the sub) for the front speakers of my surround system. This speaker fit my dimensions and physically matches my other speakers. So now I have a system that looks good and sounds great. The sound is perfect for just about anyone who wants great home surround. I suppose that for the price ($200) there are probably some technically better speakers out there, but if you have Bose already and/or need/want a short center channel this is a great chioce. Voices really do sound better with a center channel! On: 2005-12-25
Consumer Reports placed these at the bottom of the list of one of their recent center channel speaker comparisons, and I COULD NOT AGREE MORE. Lower costing speakers performed far better. In some calculated tests of my own, I found these had far less range and "presence" than other major brand speakers. I have a Yamaha NS-C444 speaker that provides full, lifelike sound, and handles plenty of power.
This Bose center channel speaker was a major disappointment, and far from representative of their generally outstanding audio components. On: 2005-01-06
I received this speaker as a gift for xmas. When I first plugged it in, I experienced the same problem that other people had complained about...the voices seemed weak and difficult to understand. I turned the dB level all the way up and it became tolerable, but still not very good. I then happened across a website that discussed speaker placement. It suggested placing the center speaker directly above or below the tv (duh), but also said to make sure it was reasonably level with the tweeters on the side speakers (within about a foot). I made this adjustment and WOW! It was like night and day. The sound was incredible! Those of you who had problems might want to try something along these lines, and those of you checking this speaker out in stores should make sure everything is aligned properly when you listen. Hope that helps. On: 2004-12-17
I was thinking about this center speaker since seems this is the only one can be put onn the top of my Sony LCD rear projection TV but since read so many bad reviews here I decided to try one from CircuitCity.
Installed tonight and watching movies "Collateral". A lot of talking in the Cab but I cant hear clearly. I tune my receiver for a long time but only I can turn the volume very lound that I can hear the talking clearly but backgroud music is too lound.
Tried my Yamaha speaker bought from Bestbuy for $60 and wow... All I want to do is packing the Bose speaker and return it to the store.
Bose makes some good speakers but not this. On: 2004-07-29
I have heard this speaker and it is great! It make voices sound like they were in front of you for movies, and for music voices sound like you were in a concert with the artist in front of you! I would get one of these but I already have a Bose Hometheater so no need for this :) Dont ever listen to reviews.. Bose is perfect at making ACCURATE and LIFELIKE clear spacious and bassy sound.
For Bose Haters and Criticizers..
If you say Bose distorts you have never heard their systems! Bose systems NEVER distort! The reviewers saying that are crazy! They havent even gone to a Bose Store! Then they say the materials Bose uses are crap and they use paper.. I own Klipsch speakers and the Bose materials are almost like Plastic! The Klipsch are plain paper I could break with a pencil!! Then they say Bose speakers rely on reflecting sound.. they dont! the reflected sound just adds spaciousness and by the way, only some Bose speakers use the reflecting technology, so Bose haters can shut up and go to h-ll! They claim to be experts and have a lot of knowledge about Bose, but trust me, Ive compared A LOT to Bose, and Klipsch, Polk, Infinity and anything you name will always be a level below Bose. Some of these reviews are unbelievable. Can you believe the person who writes, "I have had mine for 3 years now and have not once been able to hear the actors speaking during a movie". Yeah, sure...real believable.I have owned this speaker for about a year, and dialogue is crystal clear, and a big improvement over my previous center channel speaker. I have this speaker plugged directly into my surround sound receivers center channel plug, not into a Bose subwoofer unit, and it still works great. You wont be disappointed with this speaker. At the $200 center channel speaker level, it is king. If you dont like it, dont complain about it, just return it. Bose has an unconditional 30 day money back guarantee. by: Anonymous On: 2004-06-19
Like everyone else has said, this thing is a waste of money. I have had mine for 3 years now and have not once been able to hear the actors speaking during a movie. I thought it was my tuner, but it must be this piece of garbage On: 2004-02-16
I almost didnt order this based on the poor reviews and Consumers Reports findings. I needed a thin center speaker to go with the acoustimass cubes - this was the logical choice. After researching it at length there were mixed reviews with many negative comments. I called Cruthfield and the Bose Outlet to get their opinions. They were surprised to hear that there were negative comments. The Bose outlet advised theirs sounded great and noted it must be hooked directly to the receiver - not the module like the cubes. I have had the speaker for a couple weeks and it sounds great. I have two other surround systems, one high end and a lower end system and the Bose performs admirably for such a compact system. The articulation of words coming from the center speaker sounds like a real person. I dont understand the bad reviews - unless its not being connected properly. Worked for me - and as most retailers note you can always send it back. by: ssintrepid On: 2004-01-21
I would have to say that Im a bit surprised by the number of negative reviews for this exceptional product. I purchased a Bose VCS-10 Center Channel Speaker as soon as Bose started selling them. Given the overwhelming quality that is always associated with Bose speakers and my past experience with their speakers in the 401s and 301s; this choice, for me, was an easy one.If youre like myself and the years has done a bit of a job on your hearing, the Bose VCS-10 Center Channel Speaker and the proper settings on your receiver will make a world of difference in your home theater system and ultimately your movie watching experience. With those proper settings on your receiver, this speaker will beautifully bring the dialogue out in your favorite movies that has previously been somewhat drowned out by the other speakers in your system and you will soon find yourself rarely asking what it was that they said! Along with the exceptional quality in speakers that Bose is known for, this speaker will sit right there on top of your television set and as it is magnetically shielded, it will not have an effect on your television set at all. I highly recommend the Bose VCS-10 Center Channel Speaker to any and all that are in the market for a center channel speaker and are of a mood to get the highest quality product available without spending way too much money. Ive used one for years and have been thoroughly happy with it, only recently replacing it on one system with a Bose Acoustimass system but that VCS-10 is right there, leading the way on another system! For years of quality output, youd be hard pressed to do better for the meager price! {ssintrepid} On: 2004-01-20

I bought this center channel because I needed a really thin channel to fit in a tight spot by my television. I also bought into the Bose marketing machine garbage during an earlier period of my life, which I am ashamed to admit to now. Dont buy this thing. It really is garbage. This has got to be the worst example of spending $200 in my life. Dialogue on movies is unintelligible and you cannot hear a thing people are saying. I have to put English language dialogue on the screen in order to follow the movie when I cant completely crank the stereo. Honestly! My British mother-in-law was visiting us here in the California and complained on numerous occasions about her inability to understand any dialogue in the movies we watched. What an embarrassment...having my surround sound system dyssed by my kids middle-aged British grandmother. I dont know what other center-channel you should buy, but do yourself a favor and stay far away from this one. It really is little more than an expensive paperweight. Im going to get rid of mine soon so that I can start actually start listening to the actors in movies, instead of having to lip read. by: Anonymous On: 2003-09-24
I have to agree with the review that mentioned the 22 db difference. I got this center channel to match my 601, which sounds pretty good, to my 201, which sound okay but, for what I paid was in itself a rip off. I tell you I can barely hear the dialogue. I had the db cranked all the way up, and my left and right speakers as well as my sub dbs turned way down. It just doesnt make sense. Bose took me. The 601 were worth the money, but their bacon is in the center channel. I could have done better with a fifty dollar book shelf. Anyone writing anything positive about this speaker either owns stock in this company, works for the company, or owns the company. Dont be the next victim. Sincerely said. by: Anonymous On: 2003-06-11
I bought this primarily based on the BOSE reputation as well as the fact that it would sit nicely on top of the TV and fit in my stand.I could not have been more disapointed. I was replacing a KLH 3 way center channel, and the sound was not even close to that. The sound was weak, with little presence. After bringing up the center channel 12db and dropping the left and right channels -10db I could finally hear the dialogue from the center channel. I was not expecting bells and whistles, but I was expecting that I could actually hear the dialogue CLEARLY, and without a 22db difference in loudness between center and left/right. On: 2003-04-16
Be sure and listen to this speaker before you buy it. "Consumer Reports" rates it last of 13 tested center channel speakers with an accuracy of "65" out of "100". Their comment is "Fair. There are better choices". (11/02 issue)I do not own this speaker but bought its predecessor, the VS100, based on the Bose reputation. Regretfully, I had to replace it with another brand even though the rest of my theatre system is all Bose. (I even have Bose 161s throughout my home.) Their other speakers are excellent. Bose just does not seem to achieve the realism in their center channel speakers that they are so famous for in their other equipment. by: Anonymous On: 2002-12-24
I just received this speaker as a gift. I am extremely pleased with this product. Most who complain about this products clarity are looking for flashy sounds such as those associated with accentuated bass and/or treble frequencies. While those sounds may be initially attractive to the novice, they are not real and not enduring like the Bose Center Speaker. The reviewer above sounds like this type of person. None compares to this for the price. In addition, you can find it on sale too from time to time. On: 2002-12-13
I just purchased the VCS-10 to replace my outdated (or so I thought) Polk Center. Boy was I in for a surprise! The VCS-10 sounded worse than my 7yr old Polk. Thus, the VCS-10 got returned. I just purchased the Acoustic Research AR4C for less than the Bose, and it sounds great! by: Anonymous On: 2002-09-02
I love the sound of a crisp acoustic guitar, when I can hear the nuances of the guitar, a singers voice where the minute characteristics, are captured. Bose is the next best thing to live music. And I dont know what they do, but it seems the *smaller* the speaker, the greater the sound. On: 2002-03-09
I picked this item up for... less than sold here. I brought it home and had it hooked up in under 2 minutes. It produces great sound. I do not recommend listening to your music through this however. It gives it a metallic sound. This item is for dialog only. I recommend this item.
