Defective "New" Product     On: 2006-01-31

I purchased this item at a very special reduced price and it was supposed to be brand new in the box. However, after I tried to use it for the first time, I couldnt even get it to power up into the "Welcome" screen. All I got was a blank display. I tried this several times with the same result. Needles to say, I couldnt get it to play any of my DVDs. Also, the remote control didnt work (I checked the battery and it was OK). There was a "Best Buy" sticker on the battery pack that came with the unit, so I assume it was rejected once before for the same problem. So, I returned the unit back to Amazon.com for a credit to my account. I was disappointed that this supposedly new unit was defective just out of the box.

Problems, problems
by: Anonymous    On: 2003-09-17

We purchased this model about 15 months ago. Our original unit had to be immediately returned because the screen would freeze and then the movie would skip forward. Our 2nd unit has functioned well until recently. Now the same problem is occuring (screen freezing and skipping). Audiovox will not honor the warranty (its 2 months after the 1-year has expired) and wants $165 flat fee to fix it. Not real thrilled with this company. I would look elsewhere.
Had to send it back     On: 2003-02-13

My first unit had many problems, so I exchanged it for another. (See my previous review). The 2nd unit eventually started having the same problems as the first one. So finally I asked to exchange this for the 1680 model. Ive had the 1680 for several months now and it has worked much better...although not perfect. (I wonder if there is any brand or model out there that works 100% of the time?) I also noticed that Audiovox now makes a model number 1730. Probably they realized the 1700 was a dog for the most part and have discontinued it(hopefully). I still maintain that customer service was really very good.
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!!     On: 2003-01-18

We purchased one of these last month, all it managed to do was destroy the DVDs that were played.

Whats even worse is the service we received from Audiovox. They first told us that they wouldnt take the product back because we were playing defective DVDs in it. Then They wanted to send a refurb in exchange for a brand new player. Then we forced the product return.

We still havent resolved the issue of replacing or paying for the brand spanking new DVDs that the Audiovox player ruined. Audiovox is entirely unwilling to make any effort to resolve this.

Dont buy this player. I would go as far as to say if you are smart you wont buy ANY Audiovox product. You would be taking too much of a risk on reciving a poor quality product AND too much of a risk of reciving poor (and rude) customer service.

I THINK IT'S A GOOD PORTABLE DVD PLAYER
by: Anonymous    On: 2002-12-06

Slow, halting, eventually broke down completely
potluck player

Agree with most others. If you got a good one, your fortunate. First one soon skipped and froze badly. Would not play 50% of DVDs and performed poorly on ones that did start. I returned it last week after 9 months ownership and in 7 days a new unit arrived! Good CS dept in NY. So far so good. Looks like a different (better?) lens trolley component in this new one. I also concurr with those who owned the other model - my bud says he has had no problems with that one. Just runs hot. Your 2nd warrantee only lasts 60 days, so I will act quickly if this one starts acting up. A truly amazing machine when it works right.
Great, when it worked.     On: 2002-07-29

I bought this toy about 6 months ago. It worked great in the car on road trips, to keep the kids happy. Over the next few months, more and more movies quit working (locked up, skipped, etc.) The same movies still played fine at home on the set-top unit. After reading more reviews, this seems to be a common "feature". Needless to say, I returned it and bought a 9" TV/DVD combo that would run on AC or DC. All of the "defective" movies play without a hitch. This one is no where near as small or as cool but it works so that makes the kids and me happy.
Audiovox D1700...go back to D1680!
by: Anonymous    On: 2002-07-22

Read the luke warm reviews, but took a chance anyway. Returned the unit after only a week. Picture was beautiful, but skipped and pixelized too often. Tried numerous DVDs, but still kept skipping. I then bought the Toshiba 8" unit and returned it after one day (sound was bad...I should also have taken reviews to heart). I now happily own the Audiovox 1680! A little heavier, but it lives up to all expectations.
Indispensible for cross-country trips     On: 2002-06-18

I recently returned from a trip (Chicago to Upstate New York and back) with two children. The DVD player performed flawlessly hour after hour with no complaints concerning picture or sound quality. I noticed none of the problems with that other reviewers noted. However, we are very careful to keep DVDS clean and to place them in their holders so that they do not scratch.
Don't buy this !

What a piece of junk ! Only plays about 1 out of 2 DVDs and even then skips and jumps and freezes erratically. Battery power is good at 3.5 hours, but try buying spare batteries anywhere other than calling Audiovox on the phone, waiting on hold for a while, and getting surly service!

Dont be fooled by the low price. I bought this at another store, and have been consistently disappointed by it. I fly a lot on business, and really liked the idea of having a DVD player for long flights. However, since the Audiovox so seldom is actually able to play my DVDs, I have to carry a lot around with me and constantly watch the few that actually work on it.

Im about to buy another one, and it wont be Audiovox! This is a complete piece of junk and you should stay away from it at all costs.

1680 is much better
by: Anonymous    On: 2002-05-15

I originally purchased this model instead of the Audiovox 1680 because I prefer the widescreen setup. However, this unit was nothing but trouble. It is flimsy and was unable to play several newly purchased DVDs. Further, the method for recharging the battery was really unintuitive and clumsy. I returned it in favor of the 1680. The 1680 is very solid (and heavy) and despite the fact that it has a more traditional television width ratio, I have been very happy with the unit both as a portable and as a home DVD player.
I like it BUT...
by: Anonymous    On: 2002-04-16

Ive been having the same problems with my D1700 as the others..it will skip, freeze and otherwise act irratically sometimes. But sometimes it will work perfectly, and when it does, it is a wonderful thing to have. You can hook it up to any TV in your house and watch DVDs on the big screen. You can take it with you in the car (or, in my case, on the commuter train)and watch movies any time. ... The customer service site online is very helpful and will respond quickly to service inquiries. Audiovox sent me a new D1700...and it works a little better than the first one---but this one skips sometimes too!! VERY disappointing!
Good product with many glitches     On: 2002-04-16

I got this player for my two sons so we can travel and entertain them at the same time. They like the player, it works particulary well in a car since it comes with a cable to power the player in the car. The battery is OK but a new battery ... can only be bought from Audiovox so it seems a little expensive.

Picture quality is good also on TV, sound is OK when using headphones.

I have had few problems with the player. Some of the problems I have had is the player is very sensitve to scrathes and fingerprints on DVDs, my Matrix DVD plays fine in other players but the Audiovox does not play it because of a few scrathes, it has problems with similar other DVDs in my collection with lots of playtime.

I have had to return the product as it simply cannot play DVDs that last more than an hour and a half, when ever I get to the last 20% of a normal 2 hour movie, it will hang, make pixelation or simply skip parts of the movie, this happens even if I just turned on the player and forwarded to this part of the movie.

Do NOT buy this product. I will be buying the Audiovox D1680 in stead. I researched the net, and the two players are not made by the same ...company for Audiovox, so I expect to have less trouble with the D1680.

Piece of JUNK!!!     On: 2002-04-15

As reported above, this player seems to be pretty unreliable. Mine also would not play certain discs. And it would spin out of control on others, AND it froze, skipped and everything else. It seems like Audiovox added all the extras to distract you from the fact that the drive system is a piece of [junk]!! Avoid this player at all costs.
Awful DVD player: Lousy Quality control??     On: 2002-04-15

Minus one star, actually. I am very disappointed w/ the D1700 I recently purchased. As reported before, my unit looks great on paper, the price was right, the picture and sound are fine (loud enough to be heard w/out needing a headset even in a noisy van), battery life seems to be w/in the 3 hour range, size and weight are quite up to par for the size of screen, and the available feature list is impressive for the price - but it just did NOT work, skipping, pixelizing, and freezing on every DVD I tried to play on it.

I tried 5 different DVDs, and 2 CDs, loading them as carefully as I can: I also tried them a) running on AC, b) running in the car off 12v DC, c) stand-alone, off the LiIon battery. At best, a DVD ran for 1 h 30 mn before going haywire, at worst it started skipping, pixelizing, and freezing right off the bat... 2 of the DVDs were brand new, one had been played once, the 4th one was a rental. All work fine on my "big" home player. Also, as reported, the Rewind and Fast Forward button on the deck are temperamental. The CDs worked fine, but the control pad was a headache, usually requiring many presses before fast-forwarding or skipping tracks.

I tried to let the unit cool off overnight and play a DVD, jumping directly to 3/4 of the movie: it misbehaved the same, so its not overheating (not that this would be an excuse anyways.) My unit is a "REV 03", so its not an issue of cutting teeth either.

7-30-02, a month later: got a replacement unit, which works _much_ better than the original, but still freezes out randomly on 1 out of 5 DVDs, and with the same mostly unusable keypad. Still not recommended.

Worth Every Penny     On: 2002-04-09

Just got the D1700 and love it. The picture is bright and crisp. No problems playing any DVDs. The picture is much better than the Panasonic, RCA, and Toshiba models I looked at in the store and costs way less. It comes with everything to take it on the road. As with any portable DVD player, you have to read the directions and be careful when loading and unloading DVDs. If you follow the directions you wont have any problems.
Great Package-Low Performance     On: 2002-04-06

I have also been through an exchange and neither of the players worked properly. They skipped, froze, even grinded at times, regardless of the DVD that was played. Most of the problems seemed to occur after it had been playing for awhile...almost like it was overheating. Its very disappointing...otherwise, it is a beautiful player with a great picture and good sound. It also comes with all of the accessories, so you dont pay hundreds more like you do with other players. I really hope Audiovox fixes the problem because it would be a great package if they did.
Great Value for the Money     On: 2002-03-20

I just got the Audiovx D1700, & I love it! It works great. I read the other reviews in disbelief! The one I got works exactly like its supposed to. My 3 year old loves it too. The battery lasted through an entire movie & then some, the picture is vivid, the sound quality is great, & it comes w/EVERYTHING needed! Great value, great product.
Doesn't work     On: 2002-03-11

On the "plus" side, the price is right and this unit comes with everything, including a cigarette plug adapter for the car.
But, it doesnt work. After two returns, Ive tried three separate units and none of them work. First, it wont play certain DVDs (even if they are brand new). Second, for no reason, it will occasionally spin out of control requiring complete reset. Third, the fast forward and rewind buttons on the unit do not work (but the remote fast forward and rewind works sometimes, but not all times). Fourth, it doesnt play well. It will skip, pixelize, lock-up, etc., even on brand new DVDs.
Having said all that, all of the units I have state that they are REV 00, so maybe Audiovox hasnt worked out the bugs yet and maybe they will get it right by REV 01. But if this is true, in my opinion, they should never have released REV 00.
I am returning mine for a Panasonic. No more Audiovox for me.
better alternatives     On: 2002-03-10

Considering that you can get DVD player functionality in most laptops, I would steer clear of this. Why would you want to bring this in addition to your laptop on a trip? Besides, most laptop screens are bigger than this and what do you need when you want to watch a movie? The biggest portable screen you can get!
Good for the kids     On: 2002-03-03

Having just traded the family van for a new car, our children were now without mobile video. The Audiovox was the most for the money and has returned great sevice. I added a cassete adapter to play the audio through the cars stereo. The Audiovox had everything in the box. Cables, wires, hook-ups, batteries for the remote, car adapter, clearly understood instructions, all there. Should have done it sooner...
I would not recommend     On: 2002-03-02

I purchased this product and returned it in 3 days. It would play for 20 minutes and then the DVD would spin out of control and the unit would heat up. This happenned in the car and plugged into the wall. Also, when you adjusted the screen, the picture would fade out and it need to be moved up and down to finally get the screen to come back. I bought the Panasonic LV70 and it is a much better product in my opinion ( light, solid, incredible sound ). The Audiovox also became VERY hot when played for short period of time and the unit was incredibly heavy.
