I have to agree with many of the other reviews I have seen. I would give the product (and company) zero stars if that was an option.
The TV picture is OK, but the DVD player is almost useless. mine will not even identify that a disc is in it now. I did know that my unit was out of warranty when it brokedown. But I had emailed the company for some troubleshooting suggestions on how to overcome the difficulties with the DVD. They would not even reply to the email.
So I will quickly be replacing this TV/DVD with a brand that works and will never buy an Apex product again. On: 2005-03-23
I bought this unit because of the price, and learned a lesson... Its worth paying a little extra to buy a reputable brand.
I lost the remote, so I went out and bought a universal remote. Bad move... universal remotes which work with "almost every brand" do not work with this one. So I called Apex, and after paying three times what I would have spent on a universal.... which also doesnt work!
I called their technical support line and was told that they are now aware that their new remote does not work and that their techs are working on the issue and I should "call them back" in a week or two. (And, no, theres nothing they can do in the meantime...)
Since the TV/DVD itself has no "enter" button and no fast-forward or rewind, its practically useless until/unless they figure out how to get a remote to work with it.
Next time Ill buy from an established, reputable manufacturer. by: Anonymous On: 2005-01-05
I read alot of reviews about this tv but many are wrong. I believe that this tv is the best tv I have ever owned. The picture is great, the dvd player does vibrate alittle but onyl when you have a very high graphics dvd (ex. The Matrix). I am actually looking to buy another tv and Apex is the brand I am buying. Ive only had this TV for a few days, but I purchased it for a rental condo and wanted something inexpensive, but nice. I purchased at a discount store for under $270, with a one year return warranty. From what Ive read, I probably should have purchased the extended warranty for another 3 yrs. for $39.
Ive knocked off one star because the first time I used a DVD it made a horrible noise. Im hoping that if it occurs again, it can be fixed by folding a piece of paper and sticking it in the tray joint, as one reviewer said he does. At about 100 lbs., this wont be easy to return. Also, another irsksome issue, no one else seems to have mentioned, is that changing the channels is slower than on most other sets. If you have over a hundred cable channels and surf, this can be annoying. The remote looks cheap and the letters are very small. The menu system works well to auto add cable channels, but selecting and scrolling seemed a bit awkward. This can also be improved.
The most important aspect of the TV, however, is that it does provide a very good picture. Id put it on par with my Sony or Panasonic Tau. I also wanted a 27"TV that had a smaller foot print than most for my cutom built swivel stand. Although the width is stated as 26.5", the base is more than an inch less, using the same footprint as most 24" and older 25" sets. Having the speakers on the bottom instead of the side helps accomplish this. The speakers also provide good sounds.
Make no mistake about it, however, this TV is not made with the same quaility as major brands, and there will probably be a higher proportion of units that have problems than others. This is evident by the other reviews that indicate various problems. Another concern is that the longevity of this TV may be considerably less than the better brands. Nevertheless, for those of us willing to take a risk to save over $100, it may be worth it, then again... On: 2004-03-29
I would never puchase another item from this company.I purchasd this item back in October and now the dvd part of thie television is not functioning. The company Apex is not honoring their service agreement. The service center thay gave me the number to no longer sevices their products and they have to tried to resolve this matter.I would never have purchased this item if I would have known that by: Anonymous On: 2004-02-19
Fantastic TV, however not the best deal youll find. Walmart online is selling this TV/DVD combo at $277. Shiping is around $70 so its still a better deal and probably more reliable than merchants offered here. On: 2004-02-09
This is great when used for TV, but the DVD player is pathetic. I constantly have to deal with image scrambling and voice/picture off-sync. I also have the problem of vibrating tray - which is enough to drive anyone nuts! DVD mode loses your place if you accidently switch to TV mode, which happens more than you might think . Having to open the remote to start a movie pretty lame, there should be a more accessible enter button. Warrantee is lousy. Would love to return due to manuf. defects, but cannot! Very dissappointed. I got this tv for christmas and it works great. The DVD looks like component video and the speakers are powerful. It has alot of inputs and coaxial digital out to hook to a 5.1 to 7.1 system. The manual though i would give the title of the worst manual ever written by humans. I am very tech savy so it was no problem for me to set up. But for some people the poor manual may require them to call tech support. by: Anonymous On: 2003-11-30
I bought this tv-dvd combo about a year ago. I like having less clutter so combo devices are for me. The picture quality is good. The remote is easy to use. The dvd tray is a bit suspect. Its loose....which sometimes causes vibrational noises when playing some dvds. I deal with it folding a piece of paper and sticking it in the crack. This usually (Over 95%) takes care of the problem. by: Anonymous On: 2003-11-04
There is a risk that the TV will arrived damaged or not working to your satisfaction.Be aware this 100+lb TV is freight shipped, meaning that if anything is wrong with the unit, you are stuck with it. Amazon will not take back even if the TV or DVD unit is defective. In my case, the dvd tray on the unit arrived broken. So even though this item is priced great, how much is your time worth? I made a game of trying to get through to Apex, the manufacturer, on their Customer Service number. So far, mainly busy signals, or if you are lucky enough to get through, get ready for a hold time in HOURS. Thus far, the situation is still unresolved. Amazon will not help in the resolution, leaving me to deal with the Apex. I have already paid a great additional cost in my time dealing with this mess. Sorry, but unless you are willing to accept it at a great deal no matter the "hassle factor", I say stick to items that you can return if something ends up being wrong. On: 2003-08-17
A few minor irritations aside, as discussed below, I couldnt be happier with this TV/DVD. It has served as my main/only TV for the last month. For the price, I just couldnt pass it up when I needed a basic, simple TV. Im not the "high definition TV" type, and mostly watch sitcom reruns, occasional baseball games, and the news. The good: 1) Its attractive. Some of the combos I saw had speakers all the way up the side, which I found to be ugly. 2) Good DVD player. It loads discs fast and the TV has a sharp picture with DVDs. 3) Convenient A/V connections. 4) Compact, relatively light, and less clutter than that associated with an external component. 5) Its just soo CHEAP! The BAD: 1) Unreadable manual, apparently translated from Portuguese to Japanese, and eventually to some strange, pre-Shakespearian form of English. Well, maybe not that bad. 2) Keeps switching from stereo to mono, and letting you know by flashing the display on the screen for several seconds. It could just be my reception. 3) Total lack of a respectable warranty. It came to me with a 3 month warranty, and then a year-long parts warranty. It wouldnt be worth fixing after the 3 months are up. 4) No independent DVD controls. For example, you cant pause the DVD and check the baseball game, or eject the DVD while watching TV. You HAVE to switch back and forth between DVD and TV to use the functions of each. And, if you accidentally hit the DVD button, you have to go find where you were. 5) Delusional volume controls. The volume control goes to 70, but it offends the ears after about 14. Of course, a lot of TVs seem to have this problem. I would rather it have a lower max volume and allow you to fine tune the volume.Im mostly nitpicking, and Im actually quite happy with this TV. I may have to revise my review if it breaks after the 3-month warranty is up. I think this is one case where you get more than what you pay for and I would recommend it. I have had this TV (without the DVD player, the GT2015) for about a month, and it was a really good buy. Its bright and clear from 15 feet away. The speakers have a lot of ommph for only 5 watts per channel, so make sure you turn down both the bass and treble to about 20% power so you can get a full range of volume control. The only thing it lacks is a digital comb filter, but you cant tell the difference if you have digital cable or use an s-video cable to hook up the VCR or whatever. It does *not* have an internal antenna, however. Its not a wega, but it cost about a third of the price of a Sony. If you get what you pay for, I got a deal. 8) by: Anonymous On: 2003-08-04
It plays DVD-Rs along with CDRWs and CDRs and it looks great. For the price you cannot beat. I did notice a little curve in the picture at the bottom of the screen but I am very picky and most people would not even notice. The DVDs look very sharp like it has component hookups internally. The picture could be a little better watching TV through cable but that could be my line. by: fdoamerica On: 2003-03-31
I bought this 20" Apex flat screen television to replace my girlfriends ageing 12 year old bedroom TV (19 in.). She loves it! The MTS stereo sound (5 watts) is good and the speakers do not distort at full volume. Because of the flat screen and advanced technology the picture is sharper, cleaner, crisper. As you can read, the Apex has a 181-channel tuner and a V-chip. The best was the price. This was a great price and a very good TV. On: 2003-03-30

Bought this unit from another store. The DVD works fine, the TV works fine half the time the other half the contrast goes very dark, switching back and fourth every three or four seconds. It was returned, now awaiting repair/replacement. On: 2003-03-08
I love this tv. It has everything and then some. Of course, it has pure flat picture screen, but besides it has every feature you could think of and wouldnt think of. The sound adjusts gradually automatically when turn the channel for those of you who have sensetive hears. Not to mention, it plays just about every type of disk you can buy in the store and make on your own. I love the stero surround sound. All of this and more for a great low price. This is the best V-Day present i have ever received. On: 2003-01-09
We Bought this For Our Daughters Room, As we did not want to spend a ton of money...to our Surprise this is an Awesome TV/DVD Duo!... by: Anonymous On: 2002-12-21
I purchased this TV/DVD unit at an unbelievable price for use in a secondary room. All I was looking for was something with a decent picture, considering how little I had paid. What I got was a unit with really excellent picture quality and a fine DVD player. I have been very impressed even when comparing it to my Sony. The only complaint I have is that the manual is very poorly written. However this is not a big complaint (once you figure out how to get the batteries into the remote) but it does cost the Apex a star. On: 2002-11-29
This was a great deal, my husband and I just picked the television up yesterday and are very pleased. The only draw back so far is picture quality which seems to be a little grainy on certain channels but I have not even attempted to make adjustments yet. Overall, this is a great value for the price.
