I used these speakers to replace the original speakers that came with my Pioneer Elite Plasma (PRO 150FD). I needed a bookshelf speaker set that was non intrusive. These speakers sound much better than the original TV speakers, are hidden from view and the sound dispersion is great. These are excellent value and I am pleased with how they have worked out in my set up. On: 2008-05-12
These speakers when combined with the Bose Center speaker deliver fantastic quality for HD TV broadcasts in Dolby Surround mode.
I have them connected to a Sony STR-DG510 Home Theater Receiver that has an auto setup feature of the speakers in a surround system. With this combo the dialog is clear and the special effect sounds are as good as in the theater.
When you couple this with the fact that they are compact and easily located for the best theater sound I have been kicking myself for not replacing my old speakers sooner.

We bought the Bose 161 as a compact speaker system for a small room to replace a larger, older Bose bookshelf system. We picked the 161 based on the Bose name and our previously positive experience with their products.
Unfortunately, the 161 has very poor bass response. The highs and mid-reange are clear, but without the bass end of the sound spectrum, the sound is flat, almost tinny. We returned the product to Bose and got a prompt refund.
Not recommended. On: 2008-03-25
I havent had much of a chance to really test the sound. They are, however, surround sound speakers. They add to the sound but they dont drive it. Im not too worried. They fit and look fine however. Im sure, since theyre Bose, the sound will be as advertised. In my experience Bose products, although a bit over priced and over hyped, seem to perform well. On: 2008-01-19
I bought these Bose speakers as replacements for 15 year old Sony speakers that came with a home theater system. I didnt want to get rid of the receiver or sub-woofer, so I attached the Bose 161s to it. They are great little speakers to have in a small room. On: 2007-11-01
When I first got my Bose 161 speakers, I immediately stopped using my other speakers. Bose has done a great job on this product in particular, and i am very impressed. I would recommend this product to anyone and everyone who loves music! On: 2007-09-08
If you have plenty of bass these speakers will work on either the front or rear channels. I have them on both the front and rear channels and have a 10" JBL powered sub and a Klipsch center channel and I am very happy listening to music or watching a movie or t.v. My room has a tile floor and is 17ft.X20ft. and the receiver is the 5.1 channel Yamaha HTR-5440 with only 65W RMS and there is plenty of volume (I only turn it up 1/4 of the way) and bass (sub volume is 3/4 of the way up). I think it IS amusing to read the previous reviews. Of course you need a sub with these speakers. Bose states that these are for back and surround systems. I can agree with one bad review, the Bose center channel is not a very good speaker. That is why I have different speakers, Polk sub, JBL center, Acoustimass 5 as my front and the 161s as my back surround. The 161s are clear and crisp and great for movies and music. Play some George Benson and hear the "pluck" of his strings on these 161s !!! On: 2007-07-01

I think these are great speakers considering their size and they are a very good value for the price. Ive been putting together a fairly complex sound system in a large house and used the 161s for a tight enclosure space that yet had to work in a much larger room than they were ever intended for. The result was that Ive gotten a second pair. I wasnt expecting much in the way of low end performance yet these are decent and the rest of the range is impressive. My only issue is the mounting system is chintzy, and I found the speakers slipping down from their own weight. A trip to the hardware store was required which is no huge deal but then again, come on Bose, you cheaped out on the mounts. Just IMO for what its worth.

My New Samsung DVD 5.1 system has TWO output wires for Center Channel...I just had to upgrade the Center Speaker because we couldnt hear the voices over my quality speakers...(Cerwin Vega/Bose and Yamaha)...I was having a hard time figuring out how to upgrade the Center channel since most of the Center speakers only have One Input...I started looking at high quality bookshelf/rear channel speakers...found these...listened to them at best buy and circuit city...and got them...laying them down on my TV stand where the Center goes they are thin enough to not impair TV viewing....Hooked them up and maxed out the center signal.....WOW!....So much better than the little speaker that came with my Samsung...TWO separate channels for Center pumping through these sounds great!...I can recommend them as very good for the Money...I feel Center channel speaker pricing is not realistic...from $50-$1500 dollars for one speaker?...that is insane............these are a great value and Upgrade.....I hope this helps On: 2007-01-26

These speakers are really intended for use as surround speakers. I recently upgraded my 5.1 receiver to an Onkyo 7.1 with 100 watts per channel. Ive been using Klipsch speakers L/R and Center and Boston for the side surround in my existing set-up. My home theater room is not large, about 13 by 20. I thought it would be nice to add the two rear speakers to my existing surround set-up. I am a professional musician and a movie buff. Quality as well as versatility are both critical for my listening. My son (also a musician) already uses Bose 161s for his surround set-up and recommended them. I have not been disappointed. I tested them with some of my THX encoded DVDs and as rear channel speakers they fit in seamlessly.
I cant testify to the performance of these speakers as primary speakers. Some people have used them this way with apparent success, but Bose really did intend these as surround speakers and for those on a budget or dealing with limited space they are ideal for the intended purpose. As surround speakers I rate them 5 stars. On: 2006-07-19

This are great speakers. Bose keeps delivering reasonabably priced products in the market. ALthough I dont think these were meant for music specificly, they work great for sorround speakers and make a great compliment to the Acoustimas 7 system since they can be hooked up directly to the rear and fx channels from my amp.
Lot of people rag and complain about Bose but I am very eagered to purchase from them again. Klipsch and Bose are great companies with decently priced equipment. On: 2006-07-13

The 161s are great. Yes dont expect earth shaking bass from them (they only have two 2.5" speakers in them) but for surround speakers they are great. They give clear vibrant sound that makes the movies come alive. Bose once again designs a speaker that out performs anything the same size and makes bigger speakers jealous. On: 2006-03-19
Admittedly Im a music lover, not a technophile. Im more interested in Charlie Watts than I am in watts per channel. But my ear is well tuned and I know what sounds good. It would seem that there is some Bose backlash out there; perhaps in response to the Rolls Royce reputation its carried through the years. I dont know, and frankly I dont care.
I will tell you that I bought my pair not as part of a surround system but as bookshelf speakers for my small home office and I couldnt be happier. Theyre attractive, have a low profile, and provide total range at all volumes. I tested them in the store with CDs that had lots of challenging highs, sizzling cymbals, that sort of thing. The definition was clear as can be. When you crank them up the sound holds together beautifully, no mud, no distortion. I find that solo piano is another good way to test speaker clarity, I went with The Koln Concert by Keith Jarrett and the results were mesmerizing.
As far as bass response is concerned, good grief, whats the fuss? Even at low volumes I can hear Mingus plucking the strings, when I listen carefully I can even hear him dropping ironic hints. As to the higher register, thats where the clarity of these speakers really shines, Stephanie Mills soars and swoops like an angel.
Then of course there are those irresponsible moments when I simply must blow off a little steam. Out comes the Coltrane, Ayler, Dolphy, Hendrix, Winter, Tower Of Power and up goes the volume. The desk toys start dancing because everything in the room is vibrating. Even then, these unassuming monsters deliver like tomorrow might never come. Ive held minority opinions in the past and Ill hold another here, as far as Im concerned these speakers are fantastic and actually under-priced. On: 2006-03-18

I picked up my pair at Frys on sale for $80 a few years ago. Initially they replaced my BSR (points if you rememba them) 10" woofer old school 30 pound furniture speakers because those old fellas finally gave up the ghost. Missing the bass, I quickly got a polk subwoofer and it was a new world, ABBA never sounded so good in life! Then, of course I had to have surround, so these litle fellas were appropriately assigned rear surround duty, at which they soldjerly march on. Not the best, not the worst, but adequate for a little 12X20 living room when paired with a subwoof, and pair of nice JBL Northridge in front. However, when cranking up Boston one day one of the JBL tweeters blew while the Bose hung in there like a champ. On: 2005-03-16
The sport of Bose bashing aside, keep in mind these are relatively small enclosures with two 2.5 inch drivers that can crate a rear sound stage much larger than their size might suggest, and can do so without being overly fussy about placement. There always seems to be someone out there who sets their surround settings to "large", pumps up the bass, then complains that two 2.5 inch drivers in small vented plastic enclosures "have no lows", and that the sound is distorted. Neither the VCS 10 center channel or the 161s will play ear-busting levels -- the trade off of small drivers in small enclosures, and the theatre surround settings and bass management must be set accordingly. Doing this, the Bose 161s (especially when paired with the VCS 10) can produce clear focused dialog and convincing surround effects in smaller rooms. Can you do "better"? Sure, larger enclosures, with bigger drivers can play louder and lower but that doesnt mean the Bose dont deserve consideration on the basis of good performance given their style and size. If you can throw a little money at the issue and want really exceptional performance from relatively small speaker enclosures, consider the Legacy Audio Victoria speaker system with a very good multi channel theatre amp and separate processor like those offered by Adcom or Parasound. I bought these speakers with skepticism- but I satisfied with the output For God sake they carry 2 .5 drivers how do you expect to get base from them Buy a subwoofer if you want base.
As rear surround they do a fine job.. Of course there are better rear surround speakers but they cost over $400- $500
For about $150 you cant ask for more.
If you have cash go for mirage, axiom, krell, polk etc
But If you are not rich and want a rear channel speaker you can enjoy you have the answer here On: 2005-01-23
Im not usually a huge Bose afficianado, but I use a pair of Bose 161 speakers as my rear surround speakers and theyre great! I have much larger speakers for my L, R and center - and the 161s compliment them perfectly. I can hear very detailed sound coming from them - perfect for effects in movies.
Im not sure Id use these as my primary speakers in my living room, but for surround applications, or small stereo needs, they fit the bill perfectly. Theyre attractive, solidly built, and easily mount to walls using the included wall brackets. On: 2005-01-02
I watched Spiderm-man on a Bose set of speakers in 5.1. This consisted of the vsc-10 center, bose towers (i dont remember the model number, but its the one with the tweeter that point the wrong way and woofers in the backside), and these Bose 161 for surrounds.
The sound coming from the center speaker and these speakers was so unbearable at high volumes, that me and my friend agreed it would be best to turn them off and just watch the movie in stereo. They both sounded very muddy and resonance comming off the plastic construction was quite annoyting. Theyre both cheap feeling in construction and i would not be surprised if they both used the same woofers inside (the center and these).
When you are buying these speaker, you are basically buying from the bottom of the barrel of what Bose has to offer, which is really bad, considering how mediocre their more expensive offerings sound. by: zenderman On: 2004-12-25
I listened to these speakers at a Best Buy, and even the BB guy had to smile when he saw the disgusted expression on my face. Apparently it happens all the time---if you have ever heard half decent speakers (and by that all I mean is entry-level Polks or Infinitys which are far far from audiophile quality) youll instantly hear just how much of Boses name has been fabricated by a humongous advertising budget, i.e. HYPE HYPE HYPE.
Screeching treble, non-existent mids, weak bass...Ive heard better speakers at Radio Shack! by: zenderman On: 2004-12-24

DO NOT listen to the 2 reviews giving these speakers a 1 rating. As you can see they arent directed to this product, meaning those 2 dudes who claim to know audio greatly, havent even tested these out. They say Bose is based on 1960 technologies and use cheap materials, but then tell me why people who have owned Bose speakers for over 25 years still have them and work like new? Tell me also why my 3 year old Bose Mediamates, my over 1 year old Bose Quietcomfort headphones, my less than 3 months old Bose Wave Music System, my less than 8 months old Bose Freestyle and Bose Companion 3, all sound like new and perform like new, even after Ive pushed them way further than what they are meant to do with my A/V receiver. Also tell me if they use "cheap untreated paper" for their drivers, why did I look inside my Bose Freestyles speaker and found an almost plastic material on the drivers? And if their sound is sooo old from the 60s, why does it sound so rich, full, clear, crisp, lifelike and bassy?
Outside of that, these speakers are great and VERY cheap in price. Anyone who says these should be any cheaper is insane. They do a heck of a job, and Ive tested them a couple of times in many stores. The only reason I havent bought them yet is because I dont have enough money to also buy the Bose 601 Towers, and the Bose VCS-10 Center Channel Speaker. For now Ill keep my Bose Freestyle, which is really a 2.1 but sounds just as if it was a 5.1 speaker setup. Also for the bass, I understand youd like more bass, but that is a subwoofers job. These have nice and enough bass for their purpose and size. Anyway, you cant expect much bass at all from the Rear Channels, the bass is mainly on the Center, Left and Right channels. Remember Bose CLEARLY says these arent main/front speakers, they are surround/rear speakers. You can use them as main ones but make sure to have a sub if you want deep vibrating bass, or get other Bose speakers such as the 301s. Bose, the best in sound. On: 2004-12-22

Ok to all the "audio buffs" that have written reviews on this proudct one word "Cheap".
Ok you take a 2.5" main speaker and expect true bass?!? What planet are you living on?
I purchaced these speakers to replace my old JBL surrounds that did the exact same job! Back up the other speakers as a rear surround. The clarity is surpassed by brands like Harmon Kardon and Pioneer Elite, but dont expect to shell out only 150$ for a pair of those. They run around six to seven hundered dollars per speaker!
First you cannot buy a speaker to do a job it was not intended to do. The speaker has a true sound that makes you feel warm and cosy. At 100W peak RMS you can turn it up and hear the high end just sing!
If you want Bass get a subwoofer, or a pair of mains with a couple of big woofers. Or do like I do and get both :) But if your looking for a quality proudct that will last and give you a clear tone and low distortion(like none) then get these speakers. On: 2004-02-22
I strongly agree with the other reviewers that Boses speakers are way over price. They are living off the hype of their success of the wave radio and their early surround sound system that were great theater quality. That is the only reason they have to justify over pricing their other not too hot products. I got these speakers 2-years ago and the price were still the same? Performance/quality: These speakers are very clear and you get a good range of sound. High pitch sound can be heard, but there are no bass sound what so ever. If you have a receiver, a sub-woofer is necessary or these speakers are too boring to listen to. I would say the sound is dry/flat, not very special, but again are very clear. These speakers are loudspeaker (I noticed they renamed them multi-purpose) meaning they belong in a church, mall or other civic spaces that doesnt need bass, but have some clarity. The surround sound effect is a gimmick, they sound like any other above average quality speakers. They are bigger size then normal satellite speakers. They do have hanging bracket that can be screw to the wall. Are not weather proof. Price: Why did I pay for overpriced speakers? I got gift certificate and needed to finish my rear satellites of my 5.1surround system. At Good Guys nothing was cheap and I heard of Bose before and the salesman said they were great (full of nonsense). At base price of $161 they are price at a low to average price tower speakers that will give you more bass. For being a supporting cast as the rear satellite, I think they should be priced under a hundred dollar. For multi-purpose or civic loudspeaker price should be no more then a hundred-twenty dollar for these guys. If you can find them on sale for under hundred they would be a great pick up, but otherwise past on these and Polk Audio, Klipsch are better price/performance. by: Anonymous On: 2004-02-04
Bose is a fascinating case study of what the power of advertising can do for products that are acknowledged within the audio industry as being cheaply made and technically outperformed by all of its competiters. Based on audio theories from the 1960s and parts of lower quality than what can be bought at Radio Shack, Bose has built an incredible empire out of poorly designed products driven by a huge advertising budget creating an aura of "Bose".Consumers should do their research before shelling out money for Bose speakers. A google search will bring you to epinions or audioreview websites where you can find review after review, mostly negative, from buyers of Bose products. The commonly accepted wisdom in the audio industry is that Bose makes low audio quality products and sells them at very high prices. In other words those Polk, JBL, Wharfedale or Infinity mid-fi products you can find at Amazon are usually higher quality at much better price points. Compare the sound if you ever get a chance. Make sure you DO NOT depend on volume, in other words volume is a bad indicater of quality. Listen for the high and low notes and to the clarity of the music. Tough to do in a showroom at Circuit City or Best Buy, but even there the differences will show up. Bose attempts to prevent consumers from doing this by segregating their products away from the competition. After this you might look at online audio magazines (do a google search), Audioreview (one word) and Audiogon. Youll find whole NEW world of audio products such as PSB, Paradigm, Vandersteen, Quad, Sonus Faber, ACI and many more whos products will put you on a much higher level of audio than youd ever imagine. Usually these speakers are SEVERAL times more electronically sophisticated than Bose at the same price! What you wont find in these websites of magazines are Bose articles. Bose just isnt taken seriously by the industry. Good luck and happy hunting! On: 2003-06-04
Normally I stay away from reviews of products outside the realm of cds and books. Not this time! If your idea of fun is waiting on a customer service line with the words "Please wait for the next available agent" ringing in your ears endlessly, only to find out - after missing several important business calls - that you are being required to spend additional money (120 bucks) to get your problem resolved, then go through Bose. Cd players getting stuck and static on the speakers is not how I used to enjoy music when listening to Pioneer equipment. And I spent less money with Pioneer. This company (Bose) charges way too much money for original product purchases to justify the customer spending hours of his own time trying to fix a problem generated by lack of real ingenuity on the part of the company. In other words, they should build this stuff BETTER! One who can afford these products does not have time to re-enact choice product abuse scenes from movies like "Office Space" (i.e. in this case, hacking away at a cd magazine with an ice pick in order to try to remove it). So if you do want hassles and a company website that does not empower you to directly contact anyone with any power in the organization, go through Bose. They will not disappoint! On: 2003-06-03

Bose continues to impress with these speakers. While a little weak in the bass area as it sounds sort of muffled, that could just very well be the poor quality speaker wires I have. Yet, when I lower the bass, I hear pristine clear quality music. I have not yet hooked up my receiver to my television to hear the sounds of a movie. Being a college student, these are an excellent buy for a speaker upgrade to a sound system, or being added to a work in progress home theater system. The only complaint I have besides the muffled bass is that the speaker wires tend to come out a lot and I have to keep putting them back in. Once again, this could just be the poor quality speaker wires I have. Once I purchase better ones, I will update my review as to whether the bass is improved or not. Overall, a very good speaker, but until I purchase the new speaker wires, I cannot upgrade the quality of the Bose 161s.
