Gets worse with use     On: 2007-01-12

This DVD player started out great, but over time it started failing at the same points on multiple DVDs. The DVDs work in every other player I have. Now the places it fails are expanding and it is beginning to refuse to read some DVDs at all. I liked all the features and didnt really mind the slow response time, but this is just a poor example of a DVD player.
Absolutely Horrible     On: 2005-11-13

Ill just add my woes to the long list. Same problems as others have seen -- slow opening or sticking drawer, disc errors on discs that much older cheaper players will play, erratic performance. Problems started after a few months. Should have taken it back then. I have the same Onkyo receiver as one of the previous reviewers, and Ive also had outstanding performance from it, but I will NEVER again purchase an Onkyo DVD player. Heading to the store right now for a replacement.
Junk     On: 2004-11-08

The first one failed, didnt read DVDs and would not eject. I sent it back in under warranty and the replacement did the same thing. What a junker. Ive had all kinds of Onkyo equipment in the past and it was all top quality. Not this piece.
First it would not read DVD's, now it will not eject!     On: 2004-10-13

Wow! I wish these reviews existed when I bought mine! Same problems: It was always slow; It stopped reading discs after 10 months (under warranty had it fixed at a local shop within a week); Now it will not eject, and of coarse it is out of warranty!
Yet Another Customer VICTIMIZED by Onkyo's DVD Player     On: 2004-08-16

Oh, man...I feel ALL your pain. Our expensive Onkyo DVD player has just given up the ghost -- the same way all of yours did.Uncannily similar -- weve had it about a year...light use...and it ALWAYS sucked -- Always giving us wierd, balky performance...but you could usually coax it to work...but now?
ERROR READING DISK. What a piece of CRAP!!!!
Clearly its an engineering or manufacturing error -- but that helps us NOT, right?
Where are all the class action attorneys chasing McDonalds with fat people law suits NOW?
I wish there was a decent website where you could really get honest up to the minute reviews of products -- the cyber age has left Consumer Reports, and even things like E Opinions, totally behind...
I FEEL EVERYBODYS PAIN -- AND EAT CRAP, ONKYO!!!!!
Wish I'd Read These Reviews 18 Months Ago!     On: 2004-06-11

You can add my name to the list of "victims" on this product! I also bought this DVD Player 18 months ago as part of a Home Theater system which included the Onkyo TX SR600 Receiver/Amp and the fantastic Bose Acoustamass 15 speakers. No complaints on the receiver or speakers, but the DVD player started acting up after 12 months and has now just quit altogether. It lights up but cant get the drawer to open. I found all of these negative reviews while researching a replacement, which I guarantee will NOT be another Onkyo.
avoid like the plaque     On: 2004-03-28

Echoing the woes of previous reviewers, I add the story of my experience with this DVD player. I bought it as part of a home theater package with the TX-SR600 receiver and speakers. The receiver and speakers have worked fine, but this DVD player stopped working after 14 months of extremely light use (1 DVD or CD played a week or less). This DVD player now gives a "disc error" for any CD or DVD I put in. Ill have to add this one to the growing cemetary for Onkyo DVD players as the 1 year warranty is over and it will probably cost more to fix it than get a new DVD player from another company.
Poor reliabilty and Poor service     On: 2004-01-24

I bought this DVD player as part of an Onkyo home theater package. The other components work well, but Ive had the same problems as others listed here -- it finally quit working completely 13 months after purchase. Onkyos authorized service center claimed it was due to abuse (not!) and refused to honor the warranty. In addition, the national service center drug their feet, didnt return phone calls, lost multiple faxes of my receipt - it took over a month for them to tell me they werent going to pay to fix it, while there were DVD rental disks trapped inside!!

Ive owned Onkyo products for 13 years, but my replacement DVD player wont be another Onkyo. Very unhappy with their Service Center and authorized repair center.

Buy the CP500 with caution
by: Anonymous    On: 2003-12-30

I thought this would be a good value - lots of features for a lower price...but the performance issues are not worth the trouble. Consistant with other reviews here, my CP500 is very slow to react to commands (Start/Stop/Open tray etc.). It also stopped playing most CDs (both store bought and burned), just spins for a long time and returns a "Disk Error". I wish Id have paid more (paid $200 in Jan 2003) for a better DVD; Ill probably never buy an Onkyo again, well have to see how they honor their warranty.
Never buy ONKYO     On: 2003-12-21

After 1 year my ONKYO DV-CP500 will not even open the tray. This will be the last ONKYO product that I ever buy. PLEASE avoid this product at all cost, it sucks.
More Problems

I agree, it locks up on DVDs and CDs and I only use store purchased/rented ones. The tray movement is loud, inconsistent, and slow. I have owned it for almost one year and I have become very frustrated with the quirks. I would not recommend this model at any price.
Broke under warranty, but it took 4 months for parts     On: 2003-11-28

Came home from store with DVD player and it immediately broke. It was sent in for warranty repair and took 4 months to return. Onkyo claimed that they were moving theyre parts warehouse and that was slowing all repairs by authorized agents. I own 3 other Onkyo components and had been satisfied until now. This player is of low quality.
Painfully Slow     On: 2003-08-05

This DVD Changer [is unacceptable]! Its slow to react. Youll sit there for 5 seconds and wonder did the batteries go in the remote...well no they didnt--the CP500 is just SLOW! This player gets confused when CDs and mixed in with DVDs. So be ready to babysit it and have the desire to slap it when it doesnt do what you request. Overall its not user-friendly. This is NOT what you would expect from Onkyo. I previously owned a Kenwood CD changer and a single Toshiba DVD player, and everytime I use this piece of plastic I wish I never "upgraded."
Poor Poor Poor Quality & Worse Support     On: 2003-06-10

Let me start by saying if I could rate this product ZERO stars I would have. I bought the Onkyo DV-C600 6 disc changer for myself and the newer version for my dad a year later. Little did I know this product is of the poorest quality. Within 2 years my DVD player [died] on me and less than a year after that its now completely fried. My fathers situation is much worse. His player died a year after he owned and Onkyo refused to repair it. I also own an Onkyo tuner, which [died] after a year and half, they repaired it and figers crossed it hasnt broken yet. Im 3 for 3 on defective equipment so be warned DO NOT BUY ONKYO unless you want POOR POOR POOR QUALITY AND WORSE SERVICE/SUPPORT!!!
Good Deal

This device has worked exceptionally well for me. I have had not issues with it, and I have owned it for about 9 months now. Drawbacks if any are that the device is slow to respond to my requests for opening trays, stopping play, and shuttingdown, but I have seen some other brands have similar functionality. Its a great device made by a superior brand Onkyo. It goes well with the rest of their home theater systems.
Problems     On: 2003-03-27

I purchased this unit in December, 2002. I really enjoyed it for the first two months and then it would no longer read DVDs. It would read a CD or an MP3-CD only. Its currently at an authorized service center. They believe it is an allignment or decoding problem. Thankfully, its under warranty. Buy with caution.
not the usual onkyo quality     On: 2003-01-09

i bought this player on 12-27-02. ive returned it 3 times to circuit city. the audio occasioally drags badly. all 3. i love onkyo products and have had good luck with all except this model.
Nothing but problems
by: Anonymous    On: 2002-11-27

The video quality is terrible for progressive scan (no 3:2 pulldown). Sometimes the audio would suddenly stop working (analog & digital). It locks up, lacks features, and the tray movement is loud & inconsistent. There are much better dvd changers for half the price.
