I was looking for a camcorder to transfer my old 8mm tapes to computer and then probably to some other format. The model I purchased from the seller was just what I was looking for. It was priced a little higher than similar models from other sources but I was willing to pay the difference for one in great condition. When it arrived, I found that Garron (the seller) was true to his word. Although Ive not explored all the features of this unit yet, it has performed admirably in the short time that Ive owned it. Thanks again Garron. On: 2005-03-20
Considering this camera is my first, I think it is a decent camera. I am a high school student who loves to make short films. Even though there are better cameras, I think this camera is very good considering its price. You need, however, to have a decent amount of light in a room you want to film. Another flaw is the camera does not come with a firewire cable (iLINK). I had to go purchase my own which was about 30 dollars. The editing program that came with this camera is terrible. If you are going to purchase this camera, you should get another editing program as well.
Ive had my camera for a little over a year now, and it is still in good shape.
I recommend this camera to any who are looking for a camera at a low price. On: 2004-05-29
I would like to start of by stating its great film quality. Also with its perfect resolution and zooming, it makes this a bullzie for sony. On top of its great control, it has simple and easy to use and fun features. I was very suprisied when my parents bought this also and learned how to use this withen two days [a new world record ;)]THese features include fade, freeze frame (great for an intro) and many others. While the playback on the camera is OK, the sound isnt very good, but then again, you werent ment to watch the movie on the camera, watching it on the TV is what your supposed to do. Which brings me to uploading, The loading it onto the computer takes a longggggggggg time using a USB cable, but using the FireWire(which i am disappointed to say does not come with the package but is supplied at a low price on Ebay) takes a matter of a few minutes. Watching it on the TV is what it all comes down to, because, thats just what you want. To watch your Steven Speilberg movie on the big screen ;). Anyways...My friends and i have a blast fooling around with the features while making suprisingly excellent movies. Overall: 4.5 STARS Great product by: Anonymous On: 2004-05-27
The good:Clear picture when viewing the digital tapes directly on a television. I like the fade in/out button. Good value. The bad: The manual is worthless. ilink is the same as firewire? Wont read that in the manual. Uploading video to your PC via the USB port does not work. The software the camera comes with is horrid. Had to buy a memory stick. The still pictures are horrid. Apparently, through reading other reviews, to get decent uploads of video for burning to VCDs you need firewire. Now I have to buy a cable (35 bucks) and a firewire card for my PC. Perhaps I should have just bought a camera that burns directly to DVDs. Low light shots are not the best quality. All in all, for the money and my first Camcorder, I am getting great shots of my four month old daughter. As with all electronic things (first computer, dvd player, mp3 player, etc.), I will be a much more informed shopper on my SECOND purchase. On: 2004-04-15
I bought this product 3 months ago. I used it once and it worked beautifully. After I was finished taping, I put the camcorder in my carrying case. The second time I went to use it, I noticed that the zoom button was missing. I dont know how or when it popped off but considering I didnt even know it was gone until I went to use the machine should tell you how poorly this machine is manufactured. I called Sony and they told me I had to take the camcorder in for service. I just got called today and was told that Sony will fix the camcorder for $160. Im still in shock! $160 for a replacement of a button that probably costs 5 cents to make? For that price Id be better off just taking a piece of plastic and Supergluing is to the zoom slot! The zoom works fine if you put a pen in the hole and move it back and forth. All I need is a lousy piece of plastic to pop on it to make it accessible for use. I tried calling Sony for an address to write to for complaints because I didnt think it would be fair to take my frustrations out on the phone representative. Unfortunately, the phone rep just aggravated me further and told me that hes not allowed to give me an address to write to. Now how stupid is that? Needless to say, Ive bought my last Sony product ever!I did have a similar problem with my Toshiba television. After alot of use, the remote control stopped working. I called them to buy a replacement remote from them and not only did Toshiba replace my remote, they gave it to me for free! Now thats customer service!!! On: 2004-03-10
I wanted to make movies and I had heard that using my mac, this was possible. I didnt want to dither over what camera to use, so I called my sister and she suggested this model. She teaches photography and video production to adults and shes used just about every camera known to man. She said that the JVC was cheaper, but wasnt as steady as the TRV350. I said, "OK", went to Amazon and put my money down. Two days later, it was resting on my doorstep when I came home from work. I have had a blast making movies of all sorts. Its true that you have to buy a firewire cord, but it doesnt have to be a "Sony" firewire cord, just firewire! As a Mac user, the hookup to imovie is seamless. Just plug it in and away you go!!! The camera came with a one-hour battery which was fine for awhile, but then I went on Ebay and bought a huge battery for a fine price. Imagine my happiness when my sister gave me a memory stick for Christmas... I was in hog heaven. Now I dont have to carry my digital camera around or take "freeze frames" from my movies. I give the TRV 350 my unconditional love and approval. If it doesnt do what you want it to, then you probably havent read the mannual. Hey, I dont blame you, its massive! I read it when I have a question or just get to wondering, "I wonder if I can do that?" Ive run about 25 cassettes through the camera and am still finding ways to use it in my work (Im a speech therapist). Well, thats my two cents worth! If you buy one, I hope you enjoy it! First off, while I dont have much experience with camcorders, I found this relatively easy to get started on. The zoom, night vision, menu, and VCR functions are intuitive, so anyone with a little patience will get rolling fast. The video looks great to this newbie when piped through a TV, too.But....it doesnt work as advertised. One of the major reasons I bought a camcorder was to upload video to a PC, burn it as a VCD, and send video of my kid to far-off family members. So I plug in the USB cable, start uploading, everything looks great...but no audios coming through. I figure Ive goofed up the USB driver installation, which is pretty complicated, so I back out and reinstall. No dice. I check online forums and Sonys troubleshooting website, both of which recommend I change my audio driver in the provided software from the Sony driver to standard USB audio. Still nothing. I read more forums and find this is a pretty common complaint, and Sony tech support apparently blows people off when they bring it up. The most reliable solution? Upgrading to Firewire. So thats what Im doing. Another 35 bucks. Hey, I know Firewires generally better for A/V anyway, but I just want this thing to work the way Sony told me it would. Bottom line: Youre probably interested in this model because its cheaper than Mini-DV. Id recommend this if youre already using Firewire or dont plan on uploading video to a PC. Otherwise, think twice, because youll spend extra cash adding Firewire to your PC--cash that you could have used to get Mini-DV in the first place. by: Anonymous On: 2004-01-01
I dont have much to add over what has been said in the other reviews posted. Im very pleased with the quality and performance of this camera. I just used it to create by first home movie on a DVD (using the Pinnacle Studio DV version 8 software). The whole process was great. The one thing I was worried about was the buzzing that some other reviewers have noted. It does buzz during recording but it doesnt pick up on the recorded tape so far as I can tell. The convert to digital function is great for old analog tapes. This camera will convert those tapes to digital so you can burn dvds using programs like Pinnacle Studio. Consumer Reports rated it as a best buy and Sonys reliability was the best of any camcorder company according to CR by a good margin. Great camera. by: Anonymous On: 2003-12-08
This is a very nice camcorder. Some people have said its noisy. Those people must have received a defective one or are filming in a library. If it was any quieter, Id have to check if it was even on. The nightvision is great if you want to do your own Blair Witch movie. Yours will probably be better than the actual movie. As far as still pictures go, get a digital camera or 35mm. This is a camcorder, that can take stills, but it is a camcorder. All-N-Ones havent quite gotten up to par yet. Give it another couple years. I am still waiting for my Star Trek Telepoter, that should have been around or in testing by 2000:) by: Anonymous On: 2003-11-09
good for bigginers for home use
not good for digital pictures(spcly at night)
not good quality mpeg files and consume lot of memory(10 min pic requires 350mb of ur hard disk)
bit bulky
provided software is hard to use on low configuratio PC it is very slow
but still I n-joyed it and prefer it if u can get a good deal(as i got)
dont spend money for memory stick of more then 16 mb becs picture quality is very low(u never gonna develop it)
its better to keep the picture on tape instead of taking them on CD
-------- AFTER 6 MONTHS --------------------
I m really njoying this small pice of electronic, It looks like soy stuffed hell lot of feature in this small(I wont use word compact) camera I m still finding new feturs every time I go throgh the user mannual!! :)
I didnt faced ne problem discribed by other reviwers in this section my amera works perfect when ever I switch betweeen major light or temprature area!!
-----------------after 2.5 years :) ----------------
I cant say any more this is a small pice of elecronic because i see lot of small MINI DV camers. but I was happy with this camera even though my exprience with battery was not good and i will by long lasting bettry if i will keep it. but it was a good investment. specially because i used it in two of my lifes most important events engagementt and marriage :)

This is a great camera but it can be noisy - I had to return the first one because it was really really noisy. The one that replaced it was better, but still way noisier than my old Sony Hi8 which was downright silent. I guess the tape moves twice as fast and the heads probably spin faster too. Anyway, considering that the Hi8 was $1400 in 1992, this is a good deal as it has a bunch of things I wanted then like a built in light and the LCD display.Theres a fine line between "noticeable" and "annoying" noise levels and this one is right up against it. As I understand it lots of the new digital cameras, including the DV format cameras are noisier than the older analog models, I guess unless you start spending more than a grand or so. Oh well. 4/5 stars. On: 2003-09-24
I purchased this camera upon the recommendation of a salesman at Circuit City. The next day we left on a family vacation "trip of a lifetime." This camera was terrible! It NEVER got the lighting correct. All of our faces are washed out. We all extensively read the manual to try to correct it and there was nothing we could do. Also it seems if you go from outside into air condition you need to do this an hour in advance because this camera has a feature that wont let you video tape if the temperature change is significant. In other words - if its summertime - forget about using the camera. Youll have to wait for it to "dry out" in the a/c. Sony seems to be more interested in all kinds of "wiz bang" editing features than a quality picture. Thanks to Sony our "trip of a lifetime" will not be "picture perfect." I took the camera back and upgraded to an Hitachi and have been extremely pleased. This was after looking at every other camera they had, including the higher priced Sonys. Every Sony has a problem adjusting the lighting. While I was picking out another camera, another customer told me a cameraman from a local TV station told her to NEVER buy a Sony camera because they are not good quality (thats not the exact words used, but I dont want this to be edited). Dont buy this camera or any other Sony. I would also recommend not purchasing a camera immediately before a trip. Buy it in advance so you can test it out and get used to the equipment. Buy an Hitachi - youll be much happier. by: Anonymous On: 2003-08-25

I was looking for a Camcorder which is compatable to a Mac OS environment. I have been very pleased with my Sony Cybershot and was happy to find that the DCRTRV350 is mac usb & firewire compatable. Out of the box this camcorder is easy to use, and the menu and selection of various features is simple to find and access. Picture quality is great. FOR THOSE UNHAPPY WITH THE AUDIO OUTPUT one simply has to select from the factory setting of 14bit to 16 bit stero, and the output is great. You can always tell the reviewers which dont open the manual past the quick start options.....I especially like the fade-in options, intervial recording (time lapse), remote playback, and the "end search" functions. Once again I have found that Sony combines good hardware AND superior software/options functions which make other brands PALE in comparison. In general I am VERY IMPRESSED with this Sony product. Well, this is the model one level higher than 250, and more expensive. Is it worth? My answer is, definitely YES. I dont want to repeat what the manufacturer review and others said. Here is the usage summary from my experience (I used both camcoders and returned 250). Pros compared to 250:1) Analog to digital conversion feature. You can record directly from your VCR and convert the analog signal into digital one. Either with USB or Firewire, you can make your own VCD or DVD. With XP, windows movie maker can be the capture software and it does a better job than the ImageMixer came with the camcoder. 2) Super Night Vision. 16 times brighter than Night shot (250 has). You can record Save Private Lynch in complete darkness with this camcoder (either in color or green). 3) Downward compatability. This camera can play hi8, 8mm tapes while 250 can not play hi8 tapes. Cons: 1) You need to buy a Firewire cable (6 pin to 4 pin if you connect to your PC), maybe a PCMCIA or PC adaptor for Firewire as well. Its OK even you dont have them but the USB is 1.0 version so it wont be as fast as firewire (depending on how big you want the video to be). 2) Memory stick. Considering the cost of purchasing a separate memory stick this camera can be more expensive than a Canon or JVC mini-DV one. 3) Extra battery. Same thing. Japs are smart. SO you need to spend more on accessories. For all the 3 cons, you can get around without purchasing anything. E.g., use USB intead of Firewire; do not take still images (therefore not using memory stick) or use Start/Stop to record picture and use software to capture later on; use direct power instead of battery if possible. Accessories are 50%cheaper on ebay. All in all, from big 20x optical zoom to super night shot, A/D conversion to downward compatibility with hi8, 8mm, USB steaming as a web camera, you name it. The features of this camcoder are very complete. But nothing is perfect and everything is tradeoff, dont you agree? On: 2003-08-01

There are enough features to satisfy a normal person. Since Im not normal, I wanted a bit more. Scrolling menus by spinning a tiny wheel is not very user friendly, but itll do for most. I also wish I could control the fade in and out times. Some buttons that do not require the LCD screen require opening the LCD screen as they are in the inside panel. Charging is very quick and the pictures are crisp. The manual covers everything but is a bit disorganized. It needs to come with a memory stick. Self-focus requires turning the menu wheel instead of a wheel attached to the lens which is a bit annoying but thats okay as I use the auto-focus. The best thing is opening the cassette holder and watching the machine slide it out with a whirring sound. by: audrey_the_librarian On: 2003-05-12
We are using this camera to take home movies, view/transfer our library of Hi8 movies, and capture digital stills for transer to our computer. This camera has exceeded our expectations in all these areas. While my husband was anxious to get a digital video camera, I was reluctant to spend the money, even though our analog videocam is three years old -- a dinosaur by todays standards -- heavy and clunky with few features. But now Im the one who is always grabbing the camera to film and to take pictures. I love it. Using a memory stick that can be purchased in several capacities, you can take still pictures even as youre filming; the memory stick we got holds approximately 400 pictures. You can find your shot using the viewfinder (in b&w) or the LCD screen (in color). We had no trouble at all, using the included cable and software, transferring images and movies to our Macintosh computer; it will work for an Intel machine too. A recharge takes us about 80 minutes and is then good for 90 minutes of recording time using the LCD screen or 110 minutes using the viewfinder. Problematic are the LCD screen which, even when adjusted, is difficult to view in high light conditions, and the steep learning curve on the many functions and buttons. On the other hand, there are so many buttons and functions because this camera DOES so many things. There are lots of special effects too. The buttons are very small but that also helps keep the size of the camera down. Some frequently used functions, like backlight and fade, need only a single button to activate. Bottom line: It will take you a while to learn everythng that this Sony can do -- the manual is nearly 270 pages!! -- but your effort will be greatly rewarded. Also, this camera is terrific if you have tapes in the older Hi8 format. Great camera. On: 2003-04-22
The best features of this camcorder, and that things that make it worth [the extra money] over the TRV250, are its backwards compatibility and its analog to digital converter. Now that my trusty Sony Hi8 camcorder has died after 12 years of service, I not only will still have access to all the tapes, but the bulit in A/D converter will let me burn them to disc with no other hardware except a firewire port and a big hard disk. In addition, it has analog A/V inputs which will allow VHS, TV or other signals to pass through and be digitized. Bulk and the 1:20 recording time of the supplied battery are issues, as is the fact that batteries must be charged on the unit, unless you plan on buying ... stand alone chargers. The info-lithium battery system is quite nice, however, telling exactly how much time is remaining. The memory stick is OK for email or web sites, not for serious photography.Bottom line: if you have an extensive library of Hi-8 tapes that you want to play or burn, then this is the ideal unit. If you are starting fresh in digital videography, then the mini-DV units offer significant advantages in size and features. On: 2003-04-08
I bought this camera instead of the DCTRV250 becasue is had memory stick options for stills and also MPG recording on memory stick and also the 700 zoom. All 3 options that I mentionabove I felt would be worth the extra $...but I was wrong. The still are poor quality, the MPGs have very poor resolution and when you use a zoom this strong, when you actually do zoom with any distance of over 100 to 200 feet, the picture loses more than 50% of its quality. Its too bad becasue I was very excited... but save your $$ until they can improve these 3 features. On: 2003-03-31
I wanted a camcorder to replace my old Sony Hi8 TR81 which I loved. Stuck with Digital8 for compatibility. The TRV350 has a lot of great features for the price but I thought the motor noise was too loud. The TR81 didnt make much noise at all. When viewing tapes you can hear the motor. Just didnt think it was acceptable so I returned it. Went to the JVC GRD70 and MiniDV. Returned as well. Read review. by: Anonymous On: 2003-03-05
I had high expectations for this camcorder, but they were dashed with poor indoor nightime recording with ample lighting. My previous cheap Sharp model aced indoor shots at night. The Sony has to be "tweaked" for every nightime indoor video. I just want to "auto" record sometime. The light is also useless. No hot shoe either. Also.it wont play back all of my older 8mm tapes. It seems to be unforgiving if they were recorded on a non-sony model or a model with dirty heads(the Sharp could though). I think its a good camcorder if you dont expect too much from it. For the money you cant buy a better camera On: 2003-02-28
Excellent camera for the amateur as well as for the pro. Easy to use for my older son and even for....ME. Lots of perks, nice fading effects, and 4 slow motion speeds, as well as many interesting and new features. A keeper for many years of enjoyment. On: 2003-02-23
I just sent back my Canon ZR50 for poor indoor video quality and high motor noise(which can be reduced by applying filters in CoolEdit, which is too time consuming). I replaced it with the Sony DCR-TRV350 and so far it has been performing fairly well. Overall it has comparative specs including almost the same optical zoom level, and the A/D conversion feature (really nice if you want to capture video to a PC from an old camcorder or VCR). On the plus side, it has good indoor video quality including low light situations and very low motor noise compared to the Canon ZR50. On the downside, it is a little more bulky (uses 8mm tapes instead of mini-DV), and has a black and white eyepiece viewfinder. Overall I would recommend this camcorder over the Canon ZR50. by: Anonymous On: 2003-02-23
this camera is treally nice except since it is only 500 it really show the quality is ok but the nite life need improving overall good camera
