3-years and it still works     On: 2006-08-19

I replaced my expensive Panasonic (upon its death) by this inexpensive DVD player. We (kids mainly) watch at least 5-7 dvds per week. It has lasted longer than my previous Panasonic unit and it is less finicky when it comes to playing dvds that have scratches, etc.

I have been happy with the unit. It does not play DVD+R created by computer though.
You get what you pay for need I say more?     On: 2006-07-08

Super cheap equals no quality. Only lasted about 1 1/2 years. This time it will be Pioneer, Sony, Sanyo, Toshiba etc...
Junk, like my other APEX products.     On: 2006-03-31

I am apparently a slow learner. I bought this APEX product to replace a previous one that didnt work. This one doesnt, either. It plays some DVDs all the way through, some part way through and some not at all. The web site offers an 8-question FAQ as their entire support page for all models. None of the questions relate to a device that doesnt work.

Save your money, buy something else.
Apex makes only junk     On: 2006-03-07

Like everything else this Chinese company makes, its absolute junk. Avoid this brand entirely.
Bleeeech!     On: 2006-01-31

I got this deal at Meijers during their After Thanksgiving Day Sale in 2004 and paid $18.50. Still, this thing shouldve lasted more than fourteen months. It wouldnt play many DVDs that played fine on my PC. Then it finally went kaputz and wouldnt load anything. This player is suitable for the incarcerated.
the anti-DVD player     On: 2005-08-22

I recently had to return a DVD rental because I thought I had been given a defective disk. The movie played in the AD 1225 for about an hour and then seized up and wouldnt go any further. I took the DVD out of the tray and it looked like someone streaked it with a cigarette lighter. So I sent that back and plopped in a new one. Same thing happened: after an hour, it froze. Same kind of burn streak running across the disc.

Im considering tracking down a copy of "From Justin to Kelly" just to make absolutely sure the machine eats discs. But no way will I play a movie I actually want to see the end of!
cheap but terrible     On: 2005-06-27

I bought this one at walmart for <$35. I should have known better. Its worse than even its very low price would suggest. I could settle for bad image quality, lack of features, etc IF this thing would actually consistently play DVDs but all I get is skipping, freezing, refusing to play anything passed the FBI warning, refusing to eject, opening the tray but immediately closing it again trapping your fingers and the DVD (serious!), taking ages to "boot". This player has been giving me problems from the moment I first started using it. I now know its the player because Ive started to test problematic DVDs (all) on my powerbook and they do perfectly fine.

Not worth even $30. I gave it 2 stars because it was so cheap its really my fault for thinking I could get a half-decent player for that price.
DVD Player plays most DVDs     On: 2005-05-02

We got the APEX AD-1225 for Christmas and havent had that many problems with it. However I discovered that it is selective in the DVDs it chooses to play. We borrowed The Incredibles from a neighbor and it it wouldnt play past the FBI Warning. Thinking it was something wrong with their DVD, we went to the Rental Store and rented The Incredibles. It did the same exact thing. After much research on the computer, I found out that it turns out that some specific kinds of DVDs do not play on the APEX AD-1225. How very disappointing... When you rent or buy a DVD, you assume that it will work in every DVD player but it appears that the creators of DVD players dont always design their players to read all DVDs. My advice is this: If youre in the market for a DVD player, do your research before buying. Dont waste youre money or gift money in this case on a DVD Player that is selective in what it plays.
Apex Digital is a horrible company     On: 2005-03-17

Apex Digital products often fail within the first year. They have horrible customer service, false advertising, and fail to honor their warranties. Please check www.labbb.gov (Better Business Bureau) and search for Apex Digital to see the F rating the better business bureau has given them. Saving 10-15 dollars is not worth the hassle they cause.
Good for its price...     On: 2005-02-14

I had this dvd player for more than a year now and its still working fine. However, I only watch 3-4 dvds a month so maybe thats why it lasted so long. The only complaint I have is that the dvd door takes a few seconds to open when I press the EJECT button. I got it cheap at Walmart (around 35). For me, I think its good for the money.
Not bad...
by: jeep_girl_00    On: 2005-02-12

I had a great Apex DVD player for about a year and a half and then the dang thing wouldnt read Discs anymore so I went to my local Sears to buy a new DVD player and saw another Apex I was very reluctant to buy another one. But, they insisted and it was a great deal only ($$) bucks. I also tacked on a warranty this time. So if anything happens Sears will replace it. I feel this is a great idea as I dont think DVD players are going to be made like our old VHS players, which I still have one that is about 8 years old! But, I have had this one for a year now and it still works great for me. I think it is because I have the warranty as soon as it expires though I have a feeling just as all products do it will crash. But for now it is working great! I hope that continues but if it doesnt I will update to allow everyone to know.
Don't be suprised.     On: 2005-02-04

When it comes to the Apex AD-1225 DVD Player dont be surprised if it fails on you within a year upon buying it. Mine lasted approximately 7 months before destroying a DVD and failing to work again. I must say I did enjoy the DVD player due to its small size and its low weight. I also enjoyed the buttons and the usability of the machine. It was not difficult to use and the remote was also simple in design. Nevertheless I cannot discount that 7 months of use was not worth the loss of a DVD and the cost of the product and a replacement. Please be forewarned and take this into consideration.
A pile of junk. Avoid at all costs.     On: 2004-08-28

I have heard that Apex makes good, low-cost players, so I thought Id give this one a shot since it was only $42 at the local Meijer.

I bought one, brought it home, plugged it in, put in a disc, and it wouldnt play. Tried about 10 discs (a mix of store-bought and burned discs) and nothing would play. I took it back, exchanged it for another, and tried again. This time it would play the store-bought discs for a few minutes, then start freezing and skipping. DVD burns wouldnt play at all (I kept getting BAD DISC errors). Again, I tried a number of different discs, all with the same results.

This pile of crap is not even worth the $42 I paid for it. Avoid at all costs.
Apex customer service is nonexistent     On: 2004-06-01

I bought one of these "value" Apex DVD players from Amazon about six months ago. The thing had an annoying hum at times, but worked... at first. After two months it wouldnt play DVDs longer than maybe 90 minutes. I tried calling their service line - no one answered the phone. I went to their Website and wrote to their service e-mail address - I received no response, ever.

My guess is they figure (rightly) that no one is going to go to a lot of legal trouble over a device that costs less than $100. There are other companies that make low-end DVD players and other equipment - patronize one of them instead of Apex.

Great product at a great price!!!!     On: 2004-05-21

I purchased an Apex AD-1225 DVD player for my parents and it works excellent with no problems to date. The picture quality is great and gives great sound when playing CDs. This DVD player also plays MP3 and Kodak picture CDs. Alot of features for not alot of money!!! Highly recommend this product!!!
Worst DVD Player ever
by: Anonymous    On: 2004-05-14

This must be the fifth DVD player Ive ever owned, yet it is the first Ive ever felt compelled to write about. It worked fine for about a month, then quickly started to disintegrate. While it can play and recognize DVD-R, DVD-RW and the like, it skips constantly, even playing normal pressed dvds. Sometimes it will just lock-up for no reason, usually when youre fast forwarding. CDs play fine, as do MP3s (If you can deal with the horrible menu). Do yourself a favor and buy a brand-name item.
Horrible     On: 2004-04-18

Cheap and ludicrously worse than even that price suggests. 30 minutes after I inserted ANY DVD, the picture would skip, freeze, sporadically display subtitles, and would even mess up the synchronization between the sound and the picture. You can only blame the performance on an uneven surface for so long before you get fed up. Save your money.
Junk , plain and simple
by: Anonymous    On: 2004-04-07

I purchased this Apex DVD player on a Sunday and by Tuesday evening, It was on its way back to Sears. This player sucks. I figured I would try it out Sunday evening and rented a movie. Within twenty minutes of the movie, the player started freezing up and the sound completely went in and out. This continued to happen throughout the movie. I would turn the player off and restart again and same thing over and over. Freezing of the movie, lost sound and also.. the open and close button on the player seemed to work when it wanted to. Also, there seemed to be an odor coming from the machine when I turned it on. This DVD player is cheap for the money and now I know why. Nothing more than junk. Dont waste your money. I took it back and bought a Samsung for more money and so far so good. I cant believe the Apex would sell such junk. The store clerk at Sears says that they sell a lot of these players. I am willing to bet they have lots of returns too. I am giving this Apex product a 1 star. One good thing is the remote was easy to manage, still I wouldnt buy it and I am done with Apex products.

this dvd player is an absolute waste of money. this was my first player and maybe my last. granted it was cheap but i did expect it to last more than a week. now dvds that ive watched already will not even load. strangly enough it still plays cds. unfortunately i already have a cd player, i wanted a dvd player. i never had problems with my vcr, i think ill stick with that a little longer.
Don't waste your money     On: 2004-02-08

Ive never owned a DVD player before, so I can only base my opinion of this on what Ive heard about others. I baught this one because it was a great price, and I was ready to buy into the hype about DVDs. Well, in all honesty, I rather prefer my VCR. My VCR has better picture/sound quality than this thing, and it was extremely cheap when we baught it. I have to turn the volume up dramatically just to be able to hear the speech over background noise. The pictures are dull. And the bloody thing has been skipping and freezing since the day I baught it. I cant watch a movie without having to stop it, turn the DVD player off, and restarting it again. Still, that doesnt prevent it from skipping. On top of that, it doesnt play the picture and the sound together. It makes the movies look badly dubbed. You get what you pay for right? Well, Id suggest not wasting your money on this piece of crap. Spend the extra money and get one youll actually enjoy.
Apex Pleasure     On: 2004-01-12

I purchased a APEX 1225 today.....I was looking for something budget minded and that would work with my windows media created DVD back ups.....This brand works when others fail....I have took back a few players this month for the you know usual clitching blahhs....Apex 1225 hats off to you....YOU WORK...
very disappointed     On: 2004-01-08

I just purchased this product at Sears at a very, very low price for my daughter. It never did recognize the disc. It just kept saying "loading" after we put the disc in. We tried it several times. We will exchange it for another one. Hopefully it will work.
Highly recommend you look elsewhere.

I received this as a gift. It didnt work properly from the start, often refusing to open the DVD tray. Because I had another DVD player, I lent it to a friend. It worked when I demonstrated it, plugged it in, etc. She tried to watch a DVD last night, it wouldnt work. I thought perhaps I was just unlucky, but based on the other reviews, I suggest you dont waste your money on this product. It is a very poor value at any price.
Worked for 10 minutes before it broke!!
by: Anonymous    On: 2004-01-03

I bought this player at Sears for an insanely low price. I should have known something was fishy. It played the first 10 minutes of the first DVD I put in and then it froze and never recovered! I ejected the dvd and I turned off the player, but it is still frozen. The blue Apex screen wont even come on when I turn on the player. Even with this problem, I am going to exchange for another one once Sears has it back in stock because even with this particular faulty unit, you cant beat the price. Hopefully the next one will not have the same problem. Otherwise, I give up and will switch brands.
Not so good     On: 2003-12-29

DVD player was deffective right out of the box. On certain DVDs, it would make this awful sound (sounded like it was going to blow up) and the DVD would freeze up. After a couple seconds, it would start up again. Immediatley took it back and switched brands. I realized after reading reviews that I wasnt the only one who had trouble.
PAL/NTSC     On: 2003-09-23

For under $50 you cant get a better DVD player.
Its not top of the line, but it workes fine.
Mostly though it can play PAL and NTSC format DVDs.
Which is why I bought it.
So far, better than so good     On: 2003-09-20

Ive owned about 6 DVD players, the last one being an AD-1100W (which is still going strong), and needed another so I picked up an AD-1225.. so far it has really impressed me. The menus, particularly the setup and MP3 playing menus, are much nicer aesthetically than on the 1100W, and quality of both picture and sound seems superior. Component video output, BOTH coaxial and optical digital audio outs, a greatly improved remote over earlier ones (no more SHIFT key for navigating menus!), WMA playback and a host of other improvements.

I have to assume that the reviewers who had serious problems with this player simply were unlucky - maybe Apex has some quality control issues, but in this day and age returning a unit for another one is usually a piece of cake, and nobody else has anything near as good as this for the price of two or three movies on DVD!

Terrible experience with this player!
by: Anonymous    On: 2003-09-14

Let me just start the review by saying I had an Apex AD-1100w and it worked fine for no problems for a year but after a storm it shot sparks out at me so I blame that on the storm. As for this player I did not have such a good experience. As the previous review mentioned it would glitch while playing back a dvd and then just freeze up, but mine would never recover it would then just say loading no matter what disc I put in. If I left it off for a long time (like a few hours) then all of the sudden I could get it to play movies, for a little while. Then it would do the same thing. So I took it back and got another one. Guess what. SAME EXACT PROBLEM. The DVDs played fine in my computer. I took it back and got another brand and have not been having problems.
Great player for the price     On: 2003-09-14

I bought this for under $50, and it is an amazing deal. It plays a lot of formats, including VCDs, though I must say it is heavy handed wrt VCD copyrights (ie. a burnt copyrighted VCD may not play, but you gotta live with that these days).

Other than that, the Apex 1225 is almost perfect. Two little problems: 1. The remote can only put it in standby, to turn it completely off, you gotta walk to the unit. 2. It ignores commands during major operations such as power-on, you must wait for power-on to complete before hitting play or eject. This is a trivial problem, you get used to the roughly 5-second delay in no time.

The reviewer before me is unhappy that if you change aspect ratio, the people look weird... D-UH.

Returned after a week     On: 2003-08-28

The positive: Cheap, pretty good picture & sound quality.

The Negative: Poorly made. Sometimes had to push eject button 3-4 times before a disk would eject. AFF function (which modifies widescreen to fill more of a standard TV) totally distorts the picture, & is unwatchable (the already thin actors look ridiculously tall & thin). After a few days the video began freezing in mid play, at first approx 1 second glitches, but soon it would just totally freeze and require a restart.

Conclusion: Returned unit, & swithced brands.
