I wanted a reliable easy to read compass on the dash of my car. Naturally, I visited Amazon to see just about every compass known. This one, Rally by Brunton, looked like just what I wanted. When it arrived I was pleased with its looks and read the installation material and installed it, adjusted it (easy!) and took it on a test drive. I had located it in a very easy to see location and was pleased that it showed me which way I was headed at all times. Perfect. Except for the rattle.
So, I returned home and removed it from its easy-to-use snap-in cradle, and took it apart. Not hard. Inside are two threaded keepers that might rattle if the adjustment screws were loose. The LED for illumination has two leads that hang outside the unit and since I have no desire to find a way to get juice to its location, I removed the LED (easy) because it just rests in an empty space inside the compass housing and rattles. Still, my compass rattles.
Something inside the sealed liquid chamber where the rotating compass indicator floats, well, rattles. It is not possible to get inside this sealed chamber.
So if you want a very easy to read, accurate, and handsome compass for your car, this is it. If rattles bother you, look for something else. On: 2007-09-19

I did a fair bit of research for a good magnetic compass under $50, bought this for my Mini Cooper, and had to return it: there was no place for it that wasnt altering the compass reading by 90 degrees or more.
Buy it, TRY IT, and keep it if its accurate ... but it really depends on what car you use it in!

Works well, much better than the cheap ones. Its screw adjustments easily compensates for engine magnetism. The same settings work for both my vehicles, a 4 cylinder VW and a six cyclinder Dodge minivan. I mounted it with velcro so Id be able to move it between them and so didnt hook up the light. I travel around the area to teach CPR and First Aid classes. The compass serves me well when my internet maps fail me.
I was a little disapointed when I found the lighting has no connecters but only wires to connect to a voltage source. Not a big problem though. On: 2007-02-06

I bought my wife a Brunton Rally for her Jeep Wrangler. Originally, I mounted it in the center of the dashboard and she mentioned that it indicated NW intermittently - even times she knew she was driving straight South. When the compass was moved away from that location, it read accurately. Apparently, a magnet in the stereo was throwing it off.
I moved it to a position straight in front of the instrument pod and have not had a problem since. It has a great classic look in a 4X4 and it has never let us down.
Check your mounting location first for stereo, speaker or motor magnets. On: 2005-08-27
Before buying a product I know nothing of, I do lots of research on the Internet. I first tried a Ritchie compass for my car (made in the USA), but its accuracy was questionable. I then focused on a Silva 58, made in Sweden, but the cost was high. Further research showed that Amazon sells a Brunton Nexus -- which is made by Silva and is exactly the same model as the Model 58, for an incredible price. The shipping was free, it came in three days, and it looks and works great. It has comnpensators that you can adjust, but I didnt need to. Attaches to the center of my dash, very easy to read and always accurate. Overall, a great product at a great price. On: 2005-06-10
I bought one of these compasses for my car. It is completely
inaccurate --- so much so that if Im heading east it says
Im going south! You are supposed to be able to connect the
compass to a power source so that its illuminated, but the
instructions contain no mention of how to do that. In sum,
buying this "compass" is like flushing money down the toilet.
