These are advertised as being for monitors - but they arent. They are regular, split wire connections for a stereo. I had to return them because of that. If you want these for your computer FORGET IT! They arent compatible. On: 2008-06-09
In price vs. value, good purchase as speakers for kitchen stereo/tv. Vendor (Amazon/J&R) Excellent. Highly recommend J&R for electronics...check before you go to the Big Box or Discount stores On: 2008-05-10
These went in to replace some older Bose 301 IVs. I think the Bose had more on the low end but I am now able to hear things in music with these JBLs that I never could before. They sound "smaller" than the Bose, but MUCH better sound in general, I think, much more lively, rather than just filling the room with that thick & creamy Bose-ness.
Pair these with a decent subwoofer and you have better than average sound for very little money.
Also, theyre built like tanks, metal grills, thick, tough plastic. On: 2008-04-11
I was amazed about the quality and hi-fidelity sound of this small speaker and highly recommmended to everybody.....Try it to believe.. On: 2008-03-17
Its a good speaker!
but beware theres no internal-amplifier like Multimedia speakers.
Which means you need a receiver and an amplifier and connection cables to make your speakers work.
Im not professional on audio system so it took me some time to configure them (and of course some money). But, after all things done, the sound quality is worth your work and your money. On: 2008-03-01
These speakers are a MUST BUY. They are the best sounding speakers I have ever heard in this price range, and in fact their sound rivals that of more expensive speaker systems. I purchased a pair for my bedroom and now I am going to buy another pair for my den. I saw the same speakers at Best Buy for $119.00 a pair and they are totally worth the retail price, but at the prices here on Amazon they are an absolute steal. On: 2008-02-18
I was looking for a pair of small, bookshelf speakers to go with an old NAD 7140 receiver I dragged out of the basement and set up in my bedroom. Looked at several types, including Boston Acoustics, which have been reviewed favorably. I bought those, but wasnt blown away. I saw glowing reviews of JBL Control 1X speakers on this site and decided to give them a try. Wow! The sound is superb. The highs are clear and sharp and the lows are as good as those from much bigger speakers. They are smaller than many other bookshelf-type speakers so they can be set up anywhere. Ive been a JBL fan for more than 30 years. The company makes fine speakers. These are no exception. And for less than $100...perfect! On: 2008-02-15
After reading all the great reviews, I thought I had found reasonably priced, good sounding small speakers for an extension of my stereo system to a second room. All I can say about these speakers is, "You can hear the box." Anyone who has heard speakers that are acoustically invisible will know what I mean. These are definitely not in the premium quality category. I guess for the price, I should not have expected so much. On: 2008-01-04
Got three pairs of these from Amazon for $75/pair. Also bought the wall mounts for them. Replaced older Infinity surround system. The Infinities had a silk dome tweeter. These have a titanium tweeter which provides a more crisp sound. I went to BB the other day and used the speaker switcher to compare these to the bose, klipsch, infinity, yamaha and sony speakers that were all connected to the switcher. My decision to buy these JBLs was totally validated. They were waaaay better than the other speakers there. I recommend them. On: 2007-12-18
I replaced my Allison speakers which I had for more than 10 years with these JBLs and couldnt be happier. Top of the line? No, but for the money they are simply the best choice. Listened to more than 20 speakers with cost up to $250 and these won out. Amazon had them for under $80! On: 2007-10-05
JBL Control 1x Personal Monitor Speaker System (Pair)
these are small speakers, but they put out a good sound.
i needed something to amplify my t.v. sound over all of the other noises of life - dishwasher, swamp cooler, furnace, etc. -- without blasting myself out of my house. this pair of speakers has solved my problem, and the sound quality is quite good.
i am NOT an audiophile -- technical stuff is beyond my interest -- i prefer quailty over quantity, and i am very pleased with these speakers. On: 2007-06-29
I just got these great little speakers. I played my usual stereo test songs. I cannot believe how good these $75 a pair speakers sound. Every part of the music is clear. The low bass will not shake the room, but you can hear the bass instruments clearly. For the size and price they cannot be beat. I ordered them on a Tuesday and got them on a Friday, and I live in the boondocks. Great price, great sound, speedy delivery... what more could I ask for? These are very musical sounding speakers. These speakers are fantastic for there size and price. You will lose the music war with your neighbor across the street with his 300 watt stereo per channel & his $3,000.00 speakers, but you will not hear your wife when she is in the other room yelling at you to Turn that down. Remember these are small speakers with small magnets. You CAN turn them up loud, but you risk blowing them out. They are more suited for living room or bed room speakers for atmosphere music. Im using them garage/shop when working on projects. On: 2007-01-15
Gave these to my parents who moved into a smaller 1-level villa. Space is a premium now and replaced their large speakers with these little guys. Better sound than the large speakers and a very crisp clean sound.
No disapointments here. On: 2006-12-12
JBL has been known for decades for its quality "sweet" sound. From big concert systems & high end studio monitors to these little powerhouses, the sound is pure JBL: Smooth, sweet and "open". Plus, they come with the not-optional wall mounts. You cant go wrong with these. On: 2006-12-11

I normally dont buy speakers without listening to them first, but in August 2006 I took a gamble and purchased a pair of these, Im not at all disappointed!
I have a pair of these hooked up to a Pioneer amp, which in turn is hooked to my Mac Pro via optical.
Highs are very pronounced, but may be slightly brassy to some. Its really up to personal preference, my ears are very sensitive, so I notice treble more then others. I also might have been hearing more treble due to the fact I was listening to mainly 128k AAC audio (which or notoriously brassy).
Since these speakers are only 2-Way, I did notice a slight lack in the mid-range area but it wasnt super pronounced. The mid isnt bad, its merely acceptable. It will be on par, or better with most high end computer speakers. So that should tell you something right there.
Lows come through very clear, no distortion from the woofer at all, no matter how high I cranked the volume. Dont expect these to shatter the earth though, even at high volumes; As others have said, no matter *what* speakers you get, youll want a sub-woofer to "feel" the music.
These seem to be built very well. The cases are plastic, but its very high grade stuff, and the units are put together very well, no creaks or soft spots.
So, in summary:
There are a couple of audio soft spots with these, however you have to take them for what they are, studio monitors. Theyre meant to reproduce sounds as close to original as possible, which I feel they very accurately do. A lot of modern generation speakers rely on flooding the listener with either treble or bass to make up for lack of response or fidelity. These dont. The fidelity is great, the response is great. Coupled with a decent sub and receiver this makes for a great computer or home theatre on a budget setup. JBL has been selling these for over 25 years, and theyre still popular, so they must be doing something right! On: 2006-09-19
If you think that the Bose are good sound and good looking, think again. They may be good looking but their sound does not even come close to this JBL.
Listen to everything else, then this. You will be amazed by the clarity delivered by this value / low cost speaker.
Perfect for home threater use (rear), cause it may lack some base, a sub-roofer will do it.
Do not get the flat Bose....... On: 2006-09-18

Seemingly built solid, sound very good. Only complaint is that they appear to be built to be mounted using brackets that I have not been able to locate yet. Still, they sound better than other speakers I have heard for the money. PS - I dont give anything 5 stars unless it is perfect, which not much is. On: 2006-06-23
I am using these speakers with a very low watt Sonic Impact T-Amp. The speakers respond wonderfully. With the T-Amp they fill a medium sized room with really nice sound--very clean, very nice reponse across the frequency range. I have not used them for really loud rock music, so I cant comment on that aspect, but they exceeded my expectations by a lot. On: 2006-06-22

I first heard these tiny, unassuming speakers in the control room of an FM radio station. I was immediately struck by their clarity, openness, detail, imaging, and punch. No, you wont be rattling your neighbors window with the lowest notes of Bachs Tocata and Fugue, or Public Enemy. You will, however, be amazed how good a really small speaker can be. I have owned a pair for 15 years and my esteem for these little wonders has only grown. (I used to sell high end audio). Plus, they are built like a brick you-know-what, have metal cat-proof grilles, are almost waterproof, handle 150 watts, and the price keeps going down! Who knew?
