Magnavox MDV530VR DVD/VCR Combo
By: Magnavox       Average Rating: 1.0     Total Reviews: 45
More Information

Worthless     On: 2007-09-27

Has barely functioned from the start. Better than others I have tried, but thats not necessarily a good thing. VCR absolutely doesnt work and the machine turns off when a video is inserted!
JUNK!!!     On: 2007-09-27

Like all the rest I had my unit a few months and then it quit playing DVDs giving me error messages (sometimes different messages after attempting to play the same DVD). I too always thought Magnavox stood for quality. I will not buy Magnavox ever again! DO NOT BUY THIS PILE OF JUNK!!!
Do your research first!     On: 2007-07-20

Magnavox DVD/VCR Player, DV200MW8
About a week ago I purchased the above DVD/VCR, the second time Id used it, it devoured one of my favorite tapes. To my dismay, Id called the company to complain and hopefull get a replacement tape or CD, they refused and started passing the buck on the store, from which Id purchased it. Well the store didnt manufacture the component.

Talk about customer service satisfaction...Where is it? the company can forget about me buying another product of theirs.
DVD failed in less than 6 months     On: 2006-10-23

DVD Disc Error after less than 6 months; DVD player is now completely unusable. Remote control is very confusing and the unit, as a whole, seems to lack any coherent or logical flow. On the plus side it is cheap, but you get what you pay for.
This isn't the only model with problems     On: 2006-07-17

Since the model mrv700vr/17 isnt available on Amazon, Im adding my review to this Magnavox VCR/DVD combo unit, which from the pucture looks exactly like mine with the VCR and DVD slots switched sides.

Dont but Magnavox. This unit was recd as a Xmas present and its too late to return it now, as we didnt realize the problem was with the unit till after the 30 days were up. The DVD simply does not work reliably. Every 2nd or 3rd DVD I try to play does not work, although they play just fine in other DVD players and even my Playstation2. Im talking brand-new, unmarred store-bought DVDs, like Munich, The Cave, Deadwood Season Two Vols 1, 3 and 4, many many others, all of which played without a hitch in my other players. It has behaved this way from day one, but I at first thought it was faulty discs. Ive searched my model number and found many customer horror stories relating to the quality of Magnavox DVD players and their worthless customer support, so Im not even going to bother contacting them. I dont need to be yelled at by some cust. serv. rep because I have the temerity to attempt to get a replacement for their faulty product.

I have learned a lesson. Do not ever buy Magnavox DVD players. Ever. Hell, dont bother with the TVs either - my Magnavox 27" turned green after 4 years. Right now Im watching my 23 year-old Quasar till I get the new one, and the color is fine.
THIS PRODUCT IS A SCAM!!!! PLEASE DON"T BUY THIS OR ANYTHING FROM MAGNAVOX     On: 2005-12-17

PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS. We are thinking of filing a class action law suit and we are DEFINITLY reporting Magnavox to the Better Business B. We got this item and it worked fine, but then the DVD player would click in the middle of movies and stop playing. It was AWFUl and this was only after a couple months, if that. We returned it (AT OUR EXPENSE!) to Magnavox, they replaced it. After 2 weeks, THE SAME THING HAPPENED ON THE REPLACEMENT!!! We called them and they said they cant do anything since the warrenty was up by a couple months, even though the warrenty was from the FIRST DVD player, not the second one! We were shocked. My husband gave them hel& for about 1/2 hour and all they could say was "sorry for the inconvience" and didnt offer ANYTHING to make up for our time, money, effort and complete waste of time. THIS IS A SCAM and they know what they are doing. DO NOT BUY THIS AND PLEASE LET"S START THE BOYCOTT AND LAWSUITS!
Piece of Junk     On: 2005-07-17

After deciding to buy my first DVD player in 2003, I wanted to get one with a vcr with it. I owned a Magnavox vcr at the time and that one lasted me over 10 years so I figured the new one would serve me well too. Well BIG mistake, reading all these other reviews I see I was not the only one disappointed. Not even a year it would not play DVDs anymore. (And I only played maybe 20 dvds in that year) Told me that playback feature is not available on that disc. EVERYONE OF THEM. Soon after that It started to eat my video tapes, recording them and playing them. Even after rewinding them it would come out chewed up. I will never buy a Magnavox again. I feel cheated out of $200, and wish I would of read these reviews before I bought this POS. I replaced that Magnavox with a generic less expensive player, and so far Im happy with the results. Im done with Magnavox.
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY     On: 2005-04-09

Shame on me for not doing my homework first or at least reading these reviews prior to purchasing a machine. A short time after having this dual VCR/DVD we encountered problems. Of course it started after the huge 90-day warranty period. We encountered jammed/torn up tapes and new movies in the VCR slot, blinking errors and a load humming like that of a 747 jet. We tried getting it fixed three times from an independant store w/ no luck. Like they say you cant polish ______. Magnavox agreed to send us another DVD/VCR for $100. No thanks. Do not waste your $$, buy another brand - this one is a true junker. Try Sony or another reputable brand - I have had good luck w/ Panasonic.
Don't Do It!!!     On: 2005-04-08

Bad product! I would have been happy to have got the 4 mo. out of it, I returned to the store 3 times in 9 mo. Now I sit with a table weight, since it is good for nothing else and the store has discontinued it...surprize surprize. Magnavox should just take it off the market and save us all the hassle and lost money.

VHS Tapes are a Yummy Snack!!!!     On: 2005-04-01

I had this machine a little over 6 months and the VCR portion has started chowing on VHS tapes while recording. The last time it ruined the play head and now the machine will not play tapes. I called Magnavox the warranty was only 90 Days and for a few $$$ over what I paid for the device I can ship it back to them for a replacement.

What a rip off. Phillips and Magnavox are now on my DO NOt Buy List!!
WOW guess what.     On: 2005-03-07

Purchased one year ago. I fell asleep during a movie last night, tried to watch it again today and it reports that it is not compatible with that region disk anymore. It was fine until now. Works with all other region 1 disks, just not the one I want to watch now. I hate it with all my heart.
DITTO! DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM.     On: 2005-02-06

Same old story. We bought ours around Christmas 03. The back of our player notes that is was manufactured in October 03. It worked fine for about a year. One day it was fine, the next it gave us problems.

FIRST it accepted a disk, but read "DISK ERROR". We ejected, checked the disk, and tried to play again, but the DVD screen just reads that it is trying to read the disk. It continued with the "reading disk" icon (a spinning CD logo in the upper right corner) even after we took the disc out, tried others, and closed the drive w/o a disk in it.

Of course, these things happen, once in a while. But Im seeing over three dozen complaints, and only one "ok" rating. And what has Magnovox Support done? NOTHING. After staying on the phone tonight for over 45 minutes attempting to use their voice-activated menu-selection support line, I still havent reached a live person. I hope we can get a suit filed, but until then, I say BOMBARD THEM WITH CALLS AND EMAILS. You can reach this crappy automated system at: Telephone Magnavox 1-800-705-2000. You can also email them your complaint by going to www.magnovox.com and clicking on Support Center at the top of your screen, then selecting Contact Support on the right.

Maybe with enough calls, we can get some cash back on this piece of junk.

PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF GARBAGE!!!     On: 2005-01-13

If only I had read the reviews of this totally unreliable dvd player on Amazon before wasting my money! To begin with, the tv switch is lousy and I never could figure out how to "fast-forward" the dvd. Every time I pressed the fast-forward button, it would skip to the next scene! Plus, the buttons are so badly arranged it looks like they were trying to confuse customers!

Within 3 months after buying this piece of garbage, the audio on each dvd wouldnt function properly. I would hear an annoying "scratching" sound with every dvd. When I tried using the menu on the switch, nothing worked right and I havent been able to play dvds OR cds ever since. Good thing I have a reliable RCA dvd player as back-up! My advice is to avoid ALL Magnavox products like the plague!
complete trash     On: 2005-01-03

Have had this for just over a year, and reading all these comments makes me feel lucky that we managed to get a full years worth of use out of the DVD player. It quit reading DVDs tonight with no previous indication that something was wrong. It does play audio CDs. Yippee. A complete piece of trash; Im going to take extreme delight in jumping up and down on top of it in the driveway in the morning before tossing it in the dumpster. I may even get in the car and back over it once... or twice. The last Phillips/Magnavox item I will ever own.
Another lemon     On: 2004-12-28

Sorry to sound like a broken record. We use the DVD player 3-4 times per month. Now the DVD player will not play ANY dvds. The DVD player simply stopped working ...just in time for the holidays. You can be sure the next product wont be a Magnavox. No support and as of 12/27/04 only a "coming soon" page on www.magnavox.com. Very frustrating. Makes you stop and think that buying the $29 cheap DVDs may be a smarter way to go then spending extra on what you believe to be a quality product from a reputable company. Miffed in Minnesota.
no stars for this hunk of junk     On: 2004-12-27

thats right you too can have this lovely one of a kind piece of trash in your home for 2 easy payments. First one is 139.00 and the second is 99.00.(238.00) This should have gone from the box to the trash do not pass go do not pay 238. the dvd plays half way through then stops. Think the vcr slot is just big enough a stick of Dynamite....boom. dont buy dis.
This model sucks. Don't buy.     On: 2004-12-19

My wife and I purchased two of these units for our daughters families last year at Christmas (2003). Just as everyone else explained, they lasted about 6 months and the DVD player quit working.

I dont know why the guy that posted a 5-star rating on this unit, and says to not complain about Philips or Magnavox, can make such a claim considering what all of us other "non-experienced electronics users" have to say about this unit (Im a both a computer services program manager and video/dvd producer, and have never considered myself so unknowledgeable about electronics).

Perhaps he bought from a different lot. It would be interesting to find out. Mine says "Manufactured:D August 2003". Maybe if others are from the same lot, we can contact our Attorney General and file something to cause a recall.
Haha, I got all of you beat.     On: 2004-12-15

Too bad the ratings dont go into the negative. OK, I got my father (who lives 1,000 miles away) this DVD/VCR Combo for his birthday in August. Hes not technically inclined so it took him a day to set it up and he played his first DVD, Winged Migration (which drives my mom crazy).

He doesnt use it for a few months and decides he wants to watch it again in November. Its not working, so he calls me up and wants some technical support from me, since I am 1,000 miles away it is rather difficult. I figure he doesnt know how to switch from TV to Video so I square him away on which remotes to use. He tries it and nothing happens. I tell him to get better cables, believing in Magnavoxs reputation for being a quality company, I figure better cables will fix the problem.

He calls back a few days later, after he finally got the new cables. Nothing is working. So today I go to the Magnavox web site to check for a PDF of the manual. The site is just a big empty screen. Nothing is loading. So I decide to see if anyone else has had problems with their machines. I come across this site and my stomach turns sour. I just found out the present I bought my dad for his birthday is a piece of crap.

I now have to call him and tell him, and with the Maganavox site not loading it feels like a thief has slipped away with my money and disappeared. Its like they wont even face me.

This product sucks, I will never buy a Magnavox product again and I will make sure no one I know buys one of their products either.

I also learned a valuable lesson, do the research.
The MDV530VR is not reliable     On: 2004-11-27

My MDV530VR quit playing commercial dvds after 6 months. It can still play music dvds or jpeg images created on a computer But it is now useless for playing dvd movies.
The Magnavox website was useless to use and I didnt feel like staying on the phone after 20 minutes to try and talk to a real person. I went online and did a search for other comments on this unit. The other comments were not very encouraging. I decided that if you ever need service on the unit then you are screwed unless you have money to throw away.

I like Magnavox     On: 2004-11-13

I have a Phillips DVD player, not this particular one, and it works just fine. Ive had it almost a year, but maybe I dont use mine as often as other people. I have 2 VCRs and 4 TVs that are all Magnavox, some over 10 years old and they still work. I havent recieved this item yet, but I have just purchased it and I think it will work just fine. If you get a brand that doesnt match your TV they dont cooperate and it messes up the picture and sound so since my TV is a Magnavox this is the DVD player Im getting. Ive never had any problem with their tech support either.
Do Not Buy This!!!     On: 2004-08-28

Unfortunately, I bought this product without researching it. The DVD player is absolute junk!!! The DVD tray quit opening after 8 months. I also was told by the company that they would be happy to replace it for "discount" price of $99. Given that I only paid this plus tax, it was no discount. Given the companys policy on this item, I strongly urge everyone to take a pass on Magnavox products.
Boycott Magnavox     On: 2004-08-15

Totally agree with everyone else. We got this as a gift for christmas, played about 10 dvds before the unit quit reading even brand new DVDs. Since it was over three months since the purchase date - magnavox tried to sell me a replacement piece of $h%t for $88. Ill never buy another Magnavox product in my life.

DO NOT BUY
by: Anonymous    On: 2004-07-19

We purchased this unit about six months ago and the dvd player simply stopped reading any kind of disk.

After calling Philips/Magnavox, they informed us that the unit was still under warranty and they would be happy to send us a used replacement for $99.

This company does not stand behind their products and they are deceiving consumers by selling defective merchandise and then trying to double their profit by selling you another unit under the guise of a warranty.

I would strongly urge everyone not to buy products from Philips or Magnavox until they change this policy and treat their customers fairly.

Expensive Paperweight     On: 2004-07-03

ZERO STARS - DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. I have had many fine Magnavox products and this is not one. This was a birthday gift to our daughter. The unit worked fine for about six months - except the remote only works from about five feet away. I have not had any problems with the VCR but the DVD player comes back with a Disc Error even on new DVDs. Now I can only play VCRs but I already had a VCR player so whats the point. The warranty is useless., timed to expire right before the machine dies. A $130 lesson learned, review the product before your buy.
Less than a year, DVD stopped working     On: 2004-06-12

Unfortunately, my experience w this was no better. To the reviewer that suggests that it might be experience with electronics, I say get a life - I work with electronic equipment all day every day professionally, even though Im not a repair person, and if there are inherent component or firmware flaws, theres nothing that people can do to fix the problem. I think youre just very very fortunate that yours hasnt gone up yet; even components that have a very high failure rate have at least 1 in a million that work flawlessly. I suggest that yours may be one such.

Mine is less than a year old, and again the DVD started freezing, and even professional DVDs new out of the box dont work (they work fine in other players).

Recommend you stay away from this unit.

WORST PURCHASE I EVER MADE     On: 2004-06-03

This unit stopped working completely after 7 months. All I had used it for was to play DVDs. In total used less than 20 times for DVD only. The 1 year warranty was a lie. After 3 months you have to pay to replace it. They wanted $99.99 to replace a unit that has sold as low as $89.99 at the warehouse club. I wish I could rate this a zero. I dont give it any stars.
I will never buy anything from Phillips Magnavox ever again.
Total rip-off.
ZERO STARS! Let's Start the Class Action Suit Now!     On: 2004-05-13

I bought this unit as a gift for my wife on her birthday. It hasnt even been a year and this thing is starting to screw up. Wont record from the VCR properly - thats basic stuff. Similar problems developing that others have compained about. Had to replace it with the Magnavox VCR thats 10 years old and going strong. These guys have destroyed theyre brand with me and apparently many others. I am NOT going to pay practically full price for a freaking replacement. I give you my word that I will spread the word on this company and NEVER purchase a product from them EVER again. Lets start the class action suit now! - JT
Mine is still working great after a year...hmmm...     On: 2004-05-13

First of all, I dont understand why everybody is complaining that their Magnavox MDV530VR DVD/VCR combo suddenly broke down on them. Maybe these reviewers dont know how to use an electronic equipment, but who knows why it broke. I bought it brand new last year in May, and it continues to play every DVDs and VHS tapes that I own without any glitch or flaw. This Magnavox MDV530VR DVD/VCR combo is pretty much similar to the Philips DVD750VR, except that the Magnavox has no progressive-scan output.

I like to inform all the angry reviewers with their bad experience on their Magnavox MDV530VR. Please be aware that Philips and Magnavox do not make these DVD/VCR combos. Philips ask Funai Corporation to make and supply them with DVD/VCR combos to sell under the Philips and Magnavox brand, so dont pick on Philips or Magnavox as an unreliable brand. Funai currently makes Symphonic, Sylvania, and Emerson products.

The main reason for purchasing this combo is my positive experience with old Funai-made products. I still have my old 16 year old Symphonic VCR that has never needed repair since new, aside from belt change. I need a DVD player for my TV, so I bought this Funai-made Magnavox DVD/VCR for myself.

I find the picture quality acceptable in the Magnavox MDV530VR. Just pop in a DVD or VHS movie, and Im good to go to enjoy the Blockbuster night with my trusty reliable Magnavox MDV530VR DVD/VCR combo.

Wish I would have researched!
by: Anonymous    On: 2004-05-04

I bought the Magnavox MDV530VR less than 6 months ago. Last night the VCR started chewing my tapes, I ruined 3 before I stopped. Im sorry I didnt read others feedbacks before I bought. The help desk was "no help", basically I just threw away $160. Im going to replace it with another brand, but NOT before I check the reviews! DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE
AVOID!!!!!
by: Anonymous    On: 2004-05-03

I HATE this DVD player. After about four months it started freezing DVDs in the middle of playback, pixelating the screen, jumping around on the track, etc. It wont even load some of my DVDs (regional encoding is not the issue). For example, disc one of a set will play, but disc two will not. Go figure!

I usually research all my electronics purchases, but got this one because I had a gift card at Target and I had faith in the Magnavox name. Forget it. Magnavoxs reputation is shot with this piece of junk.

Lasted a year
by: kona_    On: 2004-04-29

Magnavox used to be a name one associated with quality products, but my Magnavox DVD/VCR combo is only a year old and has stopped working. I bought it for the convenience of being able to play both videos and DVDs and was told the motor was quiet. From day one, I found the motor hum to be noticeable and it got worse from there. Now it wont record or play videos. I wish I had read the customer reviews before I bought it. I agree that its a poor product.
same thing happened to me
by: Anonymous    On: 2004-04-27

Boy, I wish Id read these reviews before I bought this piece of junk. The DVD player broke just about 4 months after I bought it ... of course, after the 90-day free exchange warranty was up. And yep, Magnavox is charging $99 for a replacement ... and in addition I have to fill out a form, hunt down my receipt, pack the old unit up and pay UPS to ship it (Magnavox is generous enough to ship the replacement for free, bless their hearts) ... pardon me if I think its a better idea to buy a different DVD player that hasnt disappointed nearly everyone whos bought it. Pass on this one, folks.
Worst buy ever!     On: 2004-04-21

Got this little fun box for Christmas. This DVD/VCR combo lasted all of 3 months and twenty days! DVD still working for now but the VCR is eating tapes like a fat man at a all you can eat buffet! Like everyone else, called customer service to see if what they wrote was correct, THEY ARE! The call was routed to India and since the 90 day warrenty was past I could get another one for ONLY $99.00! Yeah right, itll be a cold day in H*LL before I buy another Magnavox product. However, this company has not heard the last of me! Let the complaints begin!
Phillips/Magnovox - buyer beware     On: 2004-04-19

I thought I was getting a quality product. Not only did I get a substandard product, but I also realized I bought it from a substandard company. I bought this unit in December and the DVD play quit after 110 days. Guess what, the warranty was for 90 days. Philips had nothing good to say other than send it in and I will be charged for a replacement unit which was darn near what I paid for this POS. No thanks, I will just chalk this up as a lesson learned and know better than to buy any more of their products.
Magnavox's warranty - Sell You Another One!     On: 2004-04-09

I had been a Magnavox fan (3 tvs; 2 vcrs; 2 cd players) BUT I received a Magnavox Combo Unit MDV530VR for Christmas (2003). The DVD worked OK but the VCR never performed very well. It never recorded a tape that could be viewed nor would it play a recording from another VCR even though my other 3 VCRs (2 Magnavox) produced recordings that were completely interchangable. It sometimes would not even play video tape movies I purchased. I finally got fed up and got the receipt from the person who bought the gift (since Magnavox requires proof of purchase) and contacted Magnavox (whose customer service has moved to India along with everybody elses).

I found that Magnavoxs warranty is to allow you to purchase a new unit - some deal. They were quite willing to replace my defective unit which they manufactured in the first place if I was willing to send the old unit to them (at my own expense) plus a check for $99 plus tax. What a business plan. How can Magnavox lose!

This brings the cost of the replacement to approximately the cost of the defective unit I already have. This about what it would cost if I just threw my defective unit away and bought a new one through Amazon. I am sure Magnavox will take the unit I return , "refurbish it" (after all I gave them $99 to do it), and send it to the next idiot that returns one. Who knows, I might even get someone elses "refurbished" unit. On the bright side they are not making me pay shipping on the replacement they send me (NOT).

Keep as far away from this company as possible. Anyone who would offer a warranty like this does not deserve to get a dollar from any of us. Our recourse is to show the same apathy toward their products as they show toward us as customers.

PIECE OF $H!T     On: 2004-04-08

I concur with everyone else on this board... My DVD hasnt gone out yet, but it sounds like it will. The VCR just crapped out though. I keep getting lots of errors and it keeps eating my tapes, and cleaning wont do the trick.

Magnavox will send out a replacement when I send them my broken unit plus a check for $99. WHO THE HELL ARE THEY KIDDING?! I think we should all file a claim against them.....this is ridiculous.

stay away !!     On: 2004-04-06

I got this for Christmas 2003. It worked great until this weekend. We have played maybe 20 dvds on it since it was set up. Now it will not load the disc. Customer support says it needs to be returned for an exchange. They want me to pay to ship this one back, and then include a check for $99 for them to ship me out a new one. I think Ill pass on that wonderful offer.
Dvd player stopped working after 3 weeks.     On: 2004-01-31

Purchased a MDV530VR for Christmas, the Dvd player stopped working on 1/10/2004. Returned it on 1/11/2004 for a new one. The dvd player on the second unit stopped working on 1/29/2004. This time Im exchanging it for a different brand of dvd/vcr combo player.
Dvd drive stops working after a few weeks     On: 2004-01-31

DVD unit very suspect, caveat emptor!     On: 2004-01-15

I didnt get mine from Amazon, but from a brick and mortar Target. This is strictly a public service:

Bought it around Thanksgiving, and before Christmas came, the DVD unit quit loading. I called Magnavox and after agreeing it was an obvious hardware failure they wanted to give me a shipping address where I could send it and get a replacement. Instead, I went back to the store and got them to give me a replacement unit.

Its January 15 and guess what? Last night the DVD drive on the replacement failed just like the first one.

For the record, I do not use the thing more than about three movies a week, so its not like Im demanding an industrial duty machine.

I can not state it strongly enough: it is a piece of junk, I would never buy another and my former faith in the Magnavox brand is no more. An inexpensive machine isnt expensive when you have to return it twice for an exchange. The only reason this review has one star is Amazon does not offer a zero.

Beware after 3 months...     On: 2003-12-07

This item works really well...for about three months right after the warranty runs out. My dvd player also ceased working about 31/2 to 4 months after I purchased it, and from what you all are saying, Ill have to purchase a new one at full price! Talk about horrible customer service! I will not be happy when I get the news from my e-mail I just wrote them. What a load of crap.
Magnavox MDV530VR combo DVD/VCR     On: 2003-11-02

DO NOT BUY THIS! I purchased this unit and was pleased for 3 and half months. The dvd unit ceased to work after just four months. Ironically, the full warranty is for 90 days only. I contacted Magnavox (Philips) customer service and they told me to eject the DVD and start again. Of course I had already done this and told them. They then said my unit was indeed malfunctioning and I could obtain a replacement unit for [full price]. ... If the replacement unit after just four months is priced as full price, it is obvious Magnavox/Philips expects it to last approx. four months. For this price, youd be better off renting a unit!
Unit failed within 4 months     On: 2003-10-08

This magnavox combo failed with 4 months of purchase. Using the DVD side returns a Disc error message, leaving the DVD player totally unusable. Full Warrantry was only for three months, but Phillips Consumer service offered to exchange the unit for the same price I paid ($129)to purchase it.

The remote is also difficult to use, and lack of a remote eject option is surprising bothersome.

Pretty Good! - I am very happy with it!     On: 2003-09-29

Its a bit of a pain to get started - Probably cause I aint so good at this stuff - But, I got the DVD going and the VCR going and it has been providing us with a lovely picture! I am very happy!

The 1st one we got was a dud - so we sent it back to you! Kudos to Amazon for a job well done with that. You guys were great!

Anyways, Im happy now - Just cant get the remote control programmed, but, the big think. DVD with the Monster Cable Comnnection is lovely and the VCR has the nices picture I have see to this date.

Talk to you all later!
