I saw this item showing 2 stars. Are you kidding? This is the BEST DVD portable system I ever owned. 12 full viewing inches, infra red head sets, but you can also plug in additional headphones, straps super easy in between back seats, great picture, can also bring inside and plug into wall and watch. Does it get better?
It also comes with a great carrying case that the DVD player drops into when you get out of the car. I usually leave the mounting straps in the car to make it easier. Everyone I know who has this item loves it! The ONLY drawback I have found is that if your DVD is burned, it wont play it, so use original DVDs and not burned copies. On: 2006-09-05
I bought this in December and after playing 2 videos it overheated and just showed colors on the screen. If you have even a tiny scratch on your DVD it wont play it. We only use it on long trips so it has not been used that much and now it wont even load the DVD at all. I called custumer service and without the reciept my warantee is no good and it will cost $180 plus shipping to fix. I even read the bad reviews and thought mine would be different!! HAHAHA. It will be my next yard sale item. On: 2006-08-18
This has truely been a godsend on long trips to the grandparents house. It gets hot, ut you just have to let it cool down. We have had this model for over 3 years now and love it. On: 2006-08-06
I am the mother of 3 and drive a Ford Expedition. I didnt want to get an overhead tv because either they were too small or blocked my vision. I have just ordered online my 3rd tv of this exact same model...seems that thieves like this tv as well.(Remember to cover it, I never did.) I have read the reviews of those who have given it one or two stars and I have to disagree. I have tried several other portable models for autos and am not as satisfied with them. For the price and the size of the screen the Audiovox 1210 is a good deal, also the wireless headphones are great. I would say that if you use this tv alot you should try to get a replacement warranty if available. We had problems with both of our first two not wanting to play dvds at around 10 months. The picture would first start to freeze up and then it would stop working. I did send one back to audiovox and they fixed it no problem in the 13th month of ownership (they give you an extra month of the warranty.) I have always found the picture to be clear and my kids have no complaints on long trips. Also, it is very convenient to be able to bring in the tv to a motel and not have to worry about ordering movies, etc. All in all I obviously would purchase this tv even with the shortcomings that I know it has. I purchased this primarily because I wanted a replacement TV for the kitchen that fits under the counter. There are few flat screen TVs available that will fit within the 11 inch clearance under my kitchen wall cabinet. Although this was overpriced, I thought I preferred it over the hang-under-the-counter models that had much smaller screens.
My main complaint is that unless you are viewing the picture from directly in front of the TV, the picture is pretty bad. That includes both side-to-side and vertical off-center displacement. My wife was very unhappy with the results, because she moves around lots when in the kitchen. As a result, my old TV is back in the kitchen and the D1210 sits in its fancy bag in the closet waiting for a more appropriate use. On: 2006-03-30
I was not lucky enough to get this unit at this wonderful price.
I paid $900 a couple of years ago and was lucky enough to have wonderful customer service from the company I purchased it from.
I had to return the item for replacement 3 times because it would power itself off. All at my cost. Finally the last one worked long enough to be outside their purchase warranty and I had to deal with the company directly.
horrible customer service!
I also had to send the cord in previous to this at my cost because one of the prongs had come off and stuck in the outlet. It took three months to get that back and they tried to claim I had already received it, which I had not. several calls later and speaking to the president of the company itself I was offered to be met half way on repair costs for the unit. I was than called back and told it had no problems they could find. After it was shipped back to me it worked briefly and than started acting up again. The screen now has a green cast to all movement. the good news it doesnt seem to be shutting itself off at the moment! On: 2006-01-03
First Ill say that I have no one to blame but myself for having bought this unit - I purchased it sight unseen on eBay. I cant say that it does not do what it is supposed to - and it has survived several long car trips without problems. The DVD player has worked fine throughout. However, it does have one major fault: the display is simply not bright enough. Its OK in the house (provided you dim the lights). However, in the car the display is almost unusable. Even in the back seat of a minivan with dark-tinted windows I had to block off the sides with cardboard to make the display watchable.
So the bottom line is that the unit doesnt quite fulfill its promise. I would not recommend it to anyone. I would recommend that anyone looking for such a unit buy from a local store where they can return the device if not satisfied. My only compensation is that I paid considerably less than the average price for the unit I have. On: 2005-11-03
My review is not of this particular player as much as it is for Audiovox DVD players--based on my experiences with model D1812.
The unit was manufactured in Jan 2005. We purchased it Mar 2005. By June 2005, the unit stopped playing DVDs. It wouldnt even seek the DVD to load it.
Audiovox customer support didnt respond to repeated emails. When we called the customer support number, we were informed that the unit came with a *90* warranty and repair of the unit would incur the $98 standard return fee.
Im sure theyd just pull a refubed unit off of their shelves and ship it back for the $98. Thats a no net loss for them.
Its time to beware of cheap electronics manufactured in China that sport gobbs of features for a relativly low price. What good is it to have built in games, dual headphones, delux carrying case and all the other bells and whistles if its primary function --play DVDs--doesnt work?
It isnt any good.
And thats why I recommend staying away from *any* Audiovox DVD player. Chances are they same components and manufacturing standards are going into this unit as the one that failed on me. On: 2005-10-28
This unit looked like it has everything I needed, including a TV with a PAL/NTSC that can be used overseas. I ordered the first unit; it froze and refused to eject the CD after 30 min. I returned it and the second unit did not have PAL system and the audio quit halfway through the first movie; returned the second unit for a refund. Bad product!! On: 2005-08-17
I think this thing is great. It has a good picture. The speaker sound is also good, and the "WOW" button is cool. The only thing to make this better is to make it battery powered. Add a FM transmitter to play over the car speakers and a portable battery(for plane trips) this thing is perfect.
Keep in mind of the people that are unsatisfied. People keeping them where Children can handle them(Toddlers room!!)
Always remember for every unsatisfied customer tells twenty people.
Every satisfied customer only tells 2-3. On: 2005-06-14
Bought this portable Audiovox DVD player/tv in December of 2004 from Amazon.com. Was working pretty well. Did not really use it much (had it in my toddlers room). Used it in the car just a couple of times. Then last week, the monitor stopped working. Not sure why. Will try to see if Audiovox will repair it under warranty, but I will still have to pay for shipping. On: 2005-04-04
Brand new and it worked for only a few hours. Total frustration and a waste of hard earned cash. Spring Break traffic jams and bored kids is what we got with this DVD.
With a 17 hour ride ahead of us and 3 children ages 3-8 waiting anxiously to watch The Incredibles and The Brady Bunch 1st Season we were out of luck. Audiovox and quality seem to be worlds apart. I paid almost 600 dollars for the DVD player and an extra wireless headset and ended up with a useless space hog. With whining kids in the back asking me to please fix the DVD player, I used my cell phone to call Audiovox customer service to find out how to reset the machine. After waiting on hold for 15 minutes, the rep said that I would have to send it back to Audiovox for repair but that his computer was down and Id have to call back after 12:30 to get a shipment number. Why would I have them repair the thing that didnt even make it through one trip? Im returning it to Amazon and I wont buy another Audiovox! Im hoping Amazon will also return the shipping fees and the headphones that I no longer need. I want Amazon to feel my pain and reassess its sale of a product that doesnt hold up. What I really want is for each of Audiovoxs senior management to ride for 17 hours with 3 young children and one of their machines. On: 2005-03-14
With the combination of screen size, features and price, I should have suspected that this product was too good to be true. To date, I have returned two of these players to the store where I purchased them. The first played one DVD, then quit playing altogether. The second one played DVDs fine, but produced sound from only the right side, whether using the built in speakers or the headphones. I will stick with Sony or Panasonic from here on out...Audiovox is not ready for prime time. On: 2004-12-29
This was a great purchase! I have already been on 2-10 hour roadtrips, one by myself with my 20 month old, and one with my husband and my 20 month old. We even got the sound to run through the speakers of the car, with an fm transmitter that I use with my ipod.--if you do this, everyone gets to listen to the movies. But, a 20 month old will not put on headphones--so this is a great alternative. This unit also hangs on the wall, so when we are home it goes in our sons room. EASY installation. It comes with 2 cordless headphones, and 2 jacks for headphones. On: 2004-12-19
The D1210 has proven to be a lot more than I initially thought it would be. Not only are my kids entertained on-the-road, in the back seat of the car. But, the added convenience of bringing along on trips, and having the DVD feature available in Hotel rooms and the bedroom at their grandparents when staying over, has added a whole other dimension in entertainment and childcare to all of the family. Overall the convenience and performance of all of the features of the unit have been great. It has detachable speakers, a complete in-car attachment harness, and all of the necessary cables and accessories to make for a complete solution, without the annoying need to search for adaptors or after-market bits and pieces, to make it work! Audiovox have done their homework and come up with a really great product, that I personally recommend. On: 2004-12-17
I agree with one of the other reviews in that sometimes during the day you cannot see the picture very well from different angles, but this thing is a life saver. We purchased this product last Christmas when our daughter was 1 and a half. We thought the large screen would hold her interest better than the smaller ones. It has been awesome! When were not using it in the car it is in my kitchen. Now I can cook and clean and not miss any of my shows. But it really got put to the test over this past Thanksgiving weekend. We drove eight hours with a two year old and an eight year old, and barely knew they were in the car. We put it in the back of a minivan, they put on their head phones and other than the occasional plea of the eight year old for no more Dora, they were angels. I would pay twice as much for that kind of peace on a road trip! On: 2004-11-30
For the "convenience" factor, i give it an A. On: 2004-10-28
This could have been a great addiotion to a large SUV. It had a great picture, well designed case and features. Dont buy it. It workerd for the first 2 hours - 1 movie and never started again. When the movie was ejected it was very hot -almost too hot to touch. From that time on it will not load a disk. It is on its was back On: 2004-09-08
Ok, I am on my 3rd exchange. I have had 2 failed units. They both failed on the video side of the unit, but the audio continued to work. The latest exchange has audio problems, and a dead pixel, and Ive only had it one day. Dont buy this, or if you do, dont say I didnt warn you. I wouldnt buy any audiovox product. They dont care that the unit is sub standard. I e-mailed them about the units, and their reply was as follows: "Sorry youre having problems with this model" unquote. End of story, no help or offer to help. I would never recommend this to anyone. Buyer Beware! On: 2004-09-07

I bought this over 1 year ago, used it for less than 40 hours and now it will not read DVDs. Also, just before it died, I hooked it up to a TV monitor for the first time, and the picture faded in and out for the entire length of the movie. This was consitant with other DVDs. I called Audiovox for help and they want to charge me $172 to have it repaired because it is past the warranty deadline. I offered them a compromise and they were not helpful. I recommend you continue to shop!! I will never buy an Audiovox product again! On: 2004-08-31

Like the first reviewer, I bought this because I wanted to use it more places than just in a single vehicle. We can use it in my car, my wifes car, the VW camper, or inside. The permanently roof mounted vehicle units cost more and lack this versatility. The first one I got had a bad pixel (always bright) so I exchanged it and the second one was fine. The sound is excellent, either with the speakers or the nice infrared headsets that come with it. I would like to find a couple more of those. I also bought a Beamit 400FM device, which plugs into one of the headphone jacks and sends the sound to the vehicle stereo via FM -- just tune to the right FM channel. It works great, but I did have to discover that I needed the WOW off (a feature in the Audiovox) and the volume low. Then I just turned up the car stereo to the desired volume level. Now, when driving, I can at least listen to the movie. I like this item, and the only negative I would mention is the speakers not working when detatched. On: 2004-02-01
I just bought this DVD player. Rather than installing a video system in our new van, we bought this so that we could not only keep the kids occupied on trips, but have something to take into the hotels to watch. I was unable to find any reviews on this, and when you are spending this much money, it would be nice to find the pluses and minuses. So here are mine:Pluses: This is the largest screen for mobile DVD that I could find. The picture is clear, the sound is fantastic, but even more impressive to me is the infrared headsets that comes with this unit. The headsets make it sound like you are in a movie theatre, and you dont have to have wires strung through the vehicle. The unit also has a TV so that if you buy an antennae (not included), you can use it while you travel. Otherwise, you can easily hook it up to cable in your house. The carrying bag that comes with the unit is very nice and holds everything that you need for using the player. You can plug the unit into the wall for operation or into your cigerette lighter, depending where you are using it, and the unit comes complete with the attachements to hang it on the seats or you can also sit it up on the bed on on a counter for watching at home. Minuses: So far, the major disappointment with this product is the fact that the first time that we played a DVD, we noticed that there are a few dead pixels in the screen. Although I figured that I could take it back, my concern is that I may end up on a wild goose chase trying to find one that is good. It would seem that for $700, the screen that they put into this unit would not be having dead pixels. The speakers that attach to the side of the screen must be attached in order for them to work - it would be nice if they could either be attached, or be separate. And finally, whenever we want to watch it in the hotel, it is kind of a pain that you have to take it out of its protective casing in order to open the bracket that supports it for standing up. It would be nice if you could keep it in the case.
