We got this as a gift from my father-in-law when we were flying cross-country with a new baby. It worked great when we needed it to keep her occupied on the plane. Since then, we have frequently taken it out to dinner with us and turned it on when we eat and cant use our hands to play with her and keep her busy. I love it!
I wish it had a battery life indicator on it to let us know when it needs charging or how much life is left in the battery so we can ration it if needed. Also, when camping, I tried setting it up FULLY open in the mesh pocket of her pack and play (pen) but when fully open, the picture goes off. Either that, or the button got pushed to make it think it was closed. Anyway, it didnt work for that purpose.
Its very portable and I regret when I forget to bring it to dinner with us now that shes not so easily entertained. Pair this with a Baby Einstein video, and its a new parents MUST HAVE! Just dont forget to charge it or bring the charger with you if you plan to run it for a long time. It doesnt hold a charge if left sitting on the shelf for a while. Its frustrating to have it die just when you were counting on it. But, now that I KNOW it does that, I know to charge it more often, and especially before we go out to a nice dinner.
The sound is fairly low in a loud place, but the picture is really what keeps her content, so that hasnt mattered. Headphones are out of the question for a 14 month old! :)
We even used it in the nursery for a while when we needed more sleep and she was getting up too early. Hooked this baby up to a little TV and let it run on repeat in the early morning and she was happy as a clam until we came around to the land of the living with our little lark.
I love this thing and thank my father-in-law for it all the time! THANKS JIM!!!!! On: 2006-12-27

This player is very convenient for long trips. If you want to save the money, you can get it Free from this web site: bestfreestuff.biz/portabledvd On: 2006-01-09
I bought this to pass the time while flying since I travel often. Used it for the first time today and it worked great! The picture is clear, I had no problems with freezing as others have mentioned. I bought decent headphones so the sound is very good. The only thing I can say is that the guy next to me on the plane had one with just a little bigger screen, made me think I should have gone with the 8". But all in all, so far so good! On: 2005-10-28
I purchased my Dvd player for a big trip the next day. I tested it out at home with the wall plug that was provided in the package. It worked great so i charged up the battery that night. Used the car adaptor the next day. The DVD cut off 15 min into it, and would not come back up. The player started to smoke so i returned it back and exchanged for another one (same brand). This one did the same thing except i used the battery instead of the adaptor and it started to smoke again. Even at the store it was smoking when the employee checked it out. I would not buy another one! Not worth it! On: 2005-10-27

WILL NEED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY IF YOU BUY THIS PRODUCT! Worked fine on our first trip - next use was outside of the 90 day warranty and it started freezing up about 30 minutes into a movie. Its next little trick was saying "wrong disc" or "no disc" with any and all DVDs or CDs I placed in it. So I have spent $200 for a trip worth of watching movies. NOT A GOOD DEAL! If anyone wants to buy it for the battery - Im selling :-) On: 2005-06-28
I have had this DVD player for almost two years, and I love it. I have never had any problems with it, its never broken, and I have dropped it a couple times with no problems.
Pros: Clear, Crisp Picture
Lightweight
Easy to Use
Plays everything Ive ever put in it.
Cons: Battery Life not great (about 2.5 hours)
Sound is ok as long as not alot of outside noise On: 2005-06-27

i got this dvd player in the discovery store. I was every excited about it because it was the only one that was both Pal and NTSC. I took it home with me and tried it out immidiately.
THe NTSC dvd worked with no problems. When i inserted the Pal dvd, a message appeared that it was the wrong region. I was surprised at this. I phoned up the store and after a while of trying to figure it out they said that it was to change regions automatically, and seeing that it didnt i should phone audiovox.
First i got a lady that said that the dvd player wasnt multi-region and Pal wouldnt work. I asked her why it said so then on the box and she didnt know and hung up.
I tried again and got a nice man on the phone. He explained that i should phone up technical support and directed me to them. There i got on the phone with a guy that said that region free dvds were illigal and it only played NTSC.
I am now going to return this worthless piece of junk to the store.
Audiovox has the worst helpdesk in the world and i dont advice this product to anyone!!! On: 2005-06-09

I am impressed! Not only did this unit come with a wealth of power options, it is really a quality product. The picture is crystal clear and has played type of media I have tried. Its light and very easy to use. No problems or complaints from this end1 On: 2005-04-09

I wont waste $100 sending in my 5 month old D1710 player that is dead. It didnt have that much use, maybe 20 DVDs. It was ok while it worked. I guess I was lucky it lasted through the warranty. (90 Days) by: Anonymous On: 2004-07-06
I decided to invest in a DVD player to keep my 2 1/2 year old toddler occupied on a cross-country plane flight. This product was definitely a worthwhile purchase. We have had no problems with the player so far, after use on 2 roundtrip plane flights as well as daily usage for a week in the hotel. The battery life is reasonably good, and the picture quality is good as well (no problems with skipping either). My only complaint is that the battery pack is pretty heavy, so the entire unit weighs a bit more than I expected it to. by: Anonymous On: 2004-06-30
I was given the player for Christmas. The first one did not work and I returned it for another. It worked for 5 months and then started freezing either 10 minutes or a hour into a movie. The warranty is only 90 days and then they charge $100 to fix it. Plus, the Audiovox customer service people were totally rude and unhelpful. They would not even listen, they just kept telling me to send them money. When I went to try to return it at the store the honest saleman did tell me that this was the DVD player most returned. DO NOT BUY AUDIOVOX On: 2004-06-29

I was given the audiovox as a gift and it is an impressive looking little unit. Its really slim in size, and the screen size really is sufficient for getting the effects of any movie from Open Range with Kevin Costner to Matrix Revolution. The volume is not very loud, although it is fine if there is no other peripheral sound. However, stick a pair of earphones on, and its great. But after several movies, I also began to experience frozen screens, black screens, and the select scenes icon would not activate. However, it doesnt happen on every film, and movies can be watched to the end, and enjoyed for the most part. The bottom also gets quite hot during viewing. As I received it as a gift, I certainly cant complain about the price, but I might recommend looking at other portable player reviews, and seeing if they highlight similar problems before buying. tHE FIRST ONE I BOUGHT WOULD NOT WORK RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX AND I TOKK IT BACK TO THE STORE FOR AN IMMEDIATE EXCHANGE BECAUSE IT DID NOT READ ANY DISC, DVD OR CD. THE SECOND ONE PLAYED FOR ABOUT A MONTH AND I ALSO TOOK THAT ONE BACK, THE THIRD ONE WOULD NOT POWER UP, aUDIOVOX IS GARBAGE ANDI WOULD RECCOMEND SPENDING MORE AND GETTING A PANASONIC. On: 2004-05-27
This thing has skipped on every single dvd weve tried to play in it. Not just a skip here and there, but lots of skips, lags, frozen screens, even the cc gets all messed up. It makes this crazy clicking sound when its messing up, too. Not through the whole movie, but like I said before, EVERY movie-even Dora, which is only 25 mins long and brand spankin new...not one has played all the way through. It is usually sitting on my nightstand not being moved or touched, too. Im not running around doing hurdles in the backyard, making it skip... Im gonna swap it for another one and give it the benefit of the doubt...maybe I got a bad egg. Ill update afterwards. On: 2004-05-26

I got this mainly for my 4-year-old, so that long trips and boring meetings might become a little more endurable for her. Its great! She loves it, and I think its simple enough shell be able to operate it as she gets just a little bigger. Yeah, the speakers arent much, in that theyre a bit tinny. And, there are a lot of buttons on the top of the machine that little fingers like to press--but, at the same time, this makes it so much more convenient, because you dont have to constantly keep track of that little remote (which DOES work really well!). It gets a bit warm on the bottom after its played for a bit, but it wasnt excessive. The picture quality seems to be good from any angle. Im very pleased with it so far! On: 2004-05-06

I have it for a week now, and tested it on >10 SVCD discs, 1 DVD (as I dont own many DVDs), 6 VCD discs, and JPEGs. No problem on any of the discs, except on 3 SVCD it froze for few seconds, then it moved on w/o problem. The quality display on moves are good, lack in JPEGs, but no big deal as we buy it for movie viewing. Tested it on really bumpy roads, no skipping at all. It gets quite warm, specially in the bottom, after ~1/2 hr viewing; it doesnt get any hotter so I guess its okay. The speaker sound is just so-so, the volume is not very loud even at its loudest setting, but still audible in the car. It sounds much better/louder with headphones. by: Anonymous On: 2004-04-21
I have always wanted a portible dvd player, but most of them were a lot of money. I thought that this one would be a good because of its price, and other reviews. Sure it has a separate battery pack but you can always plug it in (or just not forget it). It does not skip when i hit a bump on the road or even when i shake it. It is much better than I thought it would be and i am very happy!!! On: 2004-04-20

My wife and I had been thinking about buying a DVD player for home use. We do some traveling year-round and go camping in the summer, so it seemed like a good idea to get a portable DVD player, but we thought they were very expensive. We chose the D1710 for its portability, appearance, features and mostly its price range. At $200. or less, we werent expecting much. Smaller 4.5"-screen players were only $30. to $50. cheaper. The D1710 reads DVDs, CD-ROMs, MP3s, JPEGs, TIFFs, and possibly other types of disks/files. It has audio/video and coaxial outputs so you can watch movies on your regular TV, and it comes with a credit card-sized remote control, which works well. The screen is as clear as other players we saw on display costing twice as much, and the sound is typical for such small players with little speakers; it sounds good, but tiny. When using headphones or plugging into a TV or home stereo system the sound is crystal clear and as powerful as a home-based player. So far weve watched about 10 or 12 movies on the D1710, and although its tracking is decent, its not flawless. We havent played a single DVD yet that didnt momentarily skip or hang at least once or twice during the movie. An occasional black screen happens, but each time we waited and the movie picks right back up within maybe 5 to 15 seconds. To be fair, most of the movies we watched have been on cheap DVDs, and judging from reviews of more expensive units this seems to be quite common among portables. The battery, though weve only used it once so far just to test it, lasted exactly 2.5 hours on the first charge. I understand the life increases after a handful of charges. Lastly, we couldnt get JPEGs to show, and the manual is all but useless. I looked up the Audiovox website, which wasnt much more help. You have to create a user-account and then send off some text (no email address for help!), and someone will get back to you within 2 business days. They did, and directed me to call a toll-free number. It turns out that in order for the D1710 to read JPEGs, you need to record them onto disk using CD burning software as opposed to using the "drag and drop" CD feature in Windows XP. After that, it works fine. Overall, this is a great player for $200. On: 2004-03-27
I have always wanted a portable DVD player and after looking around I decided the D1710 was going to be the best for me. It plays great and has a clear picture. There is a battery that comes with it, and it is easy to attach. It has car adaptor and a wall plug too!!! All this AND it was affordable. Unlike some of the others. I have completely enjoyed it! On: 2004-03-22
When I received this DVD player, I was surprised to find that the battery case is a separate piece from the player itself. However, I plugged it in and charged it up. On my first airplane trip after receiving it, I foolishly packed the battery piece in my luggage and the player itself in my carryon bag. Sure enough, you cant use the player without the separate battery charger! After recharging and further investigation, I found a strange little switch on the side of the player that has to be in one position or the other for the screen to display your DVD. Also, I found the on/off switch to be less than obvious. If I had it to do over, I would follow the other reviewers advice and get a Sony. by: Anonymous On: 2004-02-03

I have been dying to get a portable DVD player for years, then I received a 1710 for Christmas. Its been absolutely wonderful! When I first sat down to "try it out", I was upset because it seemed like the DVD player wasnt working. I admit, the quick help guide wasnt much help. Then I tried the AV IN/AV OUT button and discovered it was set in the incorrect position. What a simple fix! Since then, I have enjoyed watching an array of movies from mini DVD-Rs (1.4GB), full size DVD-Rs (4.6GB), old DVDs and new DVDs, and even rentals. Everything has played flawlessly. The sound quality is so good that it can be heard clearly from a different room. The picture quality is great in any of the 3 available format ratios. The function keys are spaced well for easy use and are easy to read. From a distance of approximately 10 feet, I could see the picture clearly, plus the remote control worked from that distance too. Ive used my 1710 almost daily since I got it for Christmas and have had no problems yet. If my opinion changes, I will get back online to give an update. I cant attest to the customer service given by Audiovox because I havent had to use them. :-) On: 2003-12-28
I bought two Audiovox D1710 DVD players- one for each of my daughters for Christmas. Both arrived defective- one kept shutting itself off after only about 30 minutes of viewing time (this happened whether using the battery or the 110 volt power supply). The other failed to recognize about half of the DVDs we tried to view- it kept giving us an error message which stated "Wrong Disk" (these were brand new DVDs- not old or scratched ones). Additionally both units had poor picture quality and had very distorted "pixelated" video on some new DVDs. The troubleshooting section of the manual was useless. The "Customer Service" portion of Audiovoxs website was even more worthless- there was no troubleshooting information even remotely related to the problems we were having. The Audiovox Customer Service Phone Number was even less helpful- you cannot talk to a real person, and after a lengthy menu we were instructed to leave our name and number only to hear that "the mailbox is full"- we never were able to leave any information. I finally returned both units for a refund and spent a little more to purchase two Sony DVDs. The Sonys work flawlessly, have beautiful pictures and much better sound. My advice is not to waste your money and your time on the Audiovox D1710- spend the extra money to get something that works well.
