I have had this plasma and have been using it daily with normal 480i cable signal since 11/05. I finally hooked it up to hd signal this week and the picture looks awesome. I came online looking for specs for this plasma because I couldnt believe it was only 480p. It looks as good as the 1080i plasma sets I have seen. Incredible value since you can find these on ebay and craigslist used for around $600. If you can buy one used cheap dont pass up the opportunity. A+++++ On: 2008-01-12

I purchased the daewoo dp42sm plasma, had a small blue line through the picture. called the mfg...they issued a pick up authorization. Then I read the horror stories that this column wrote, got scared that I would be treated the same way.
I experienced none of the problems listed in this review of comments. They replaced my unit with a new unit as they said they would. I was finished with the process just under 2.5 weeks. I dont know what made the difference, but the experience was not as bad as I was made to believe.
A happy customer --- with my plasma tv back in the great room! On: 2005-05-16
Although I bought this plasma because I liked the very sharp and clear picture, it has a common problem that I didnt discover until recently.
There was a "pop" sound then the picture went black. I have spent the last 30 days with Best Buy and the Daewoo trying to get a new television. I have had the plasma for one year and did purchase the extended warranty. The service tech says that it cannot be repaired but the manufacturer will not respond and Best Buy does not want to give up a new set until they hear from Daewoo. Nice tv, lousy service from Best Buy and Daewoo. On: 2005-04-15
The Daewoo tv is spectacular and is more than I could have dreamed for the price. You wont be sorry if you get one of these. Now Ive seen the price at about 1,500 I paid 1,999 a year ago and am very pleased as you can probaly tell. On: 2005-02-03
I bought a 42" Daewoo from Best Buy a little over a year ago
and today as we were watching it there was a loud pop and the
picure just went black---nothing. Thanks God I bought the 4 year
extended service contract but right now I wish they offered more
like a 10 year contract. Never had a television go out after only one year, makes me wonder what else is in store. by: Anonymous On: 2004-06-26
We purchased the TV back in February and had it for about 8 weeks. In late April we started to get red lines from top to bottom about every inch on the screen. We purchased the extended service plan from Best Buy and called them. They sent their service person out and he determined the TV could not be fixed. Best Buy wanted us to deal with Daewoo because of the manfacturers warranty. DO NOT DEAL WITH DAEWOO DIRECTLY, Daewoo will not give you a new replacement unit it is reconditioned. When I informed Best Buy of Daewoos replacement policy they picked up the broken TV and replaced it with a new one. Even though we had this little problem the TV is fantastic and highly recomended. We are very happy with it and you will be too Im sure...... by: Anonymous On: 2004-06-08
I purchased this model on low-price guarantee from Best Buy for $1,999 vs. competitors advertised price, so well-below BBs going rate for the screen. I shopped for about 4 months & compared this model to comparably-priced (MSRP:$3K-$4K) Samsung, Sampo, ViewSonic, Panasonic & Sony(smaller screen size in price range). The Daewoo picture quality in all aspects was superior to the $3.5K & other competitors & equal to many models that were far more expensive. I waited hoping to get it for under $2.5K & was shocked to find it advertised for $2K in 1/04, so took the step with Best Buy due to their service & lower extended warranty price. I installed & completed set-up myself with no problems with a system that includes Direct TV, VCR & DVD recorder. Daewoo instructions for proper satellite & component set-up were precise, easy to follow &, most importantly, accurate. I have not been disappointed in the unit in any way for the dollar spent. It operates quietly & provides wonderful color & picture clarity. The only downside to the unit is that it does not have picture-in-picture, but then very little is available in the entry-level price range that has PIP. I also purchased the companion DP-SP21 speakers, which can be very hard to locate, but I got them from Target at $120 for the pair(well below other advertised prices). They are not high output, but deliver surround-sound quality & no distortion at upper-end volume. All-in-all, a superior unit for the buyer that doesnt want to spend a lot of money on a plasma set-up. On: 2004-06-02
Go check out the consumer reports Nov. 04. They rated fair on hd programming, good on dvd playback and good with regular TV via normal and high quality inputs. However, it did not get any Very Good or Excellent ratings. My own personal experience was negative. I purchased this TV and had problems with dark colors causing too much pixelation, fuzziness, and split second delays with character movement. Thus I returned the TV. Other negatives included no speakers and tough installation. The only thing I liked about the TV were its brights colors and panel design. However, I feel this is one of those "You get what you pay for" buys. by: Anonymous On: 2004-06-02
Perfect with our new Bose 321 GS home entertainment system. My 10 yr old nephew was so entranced with the vibrant colors when we put on FINDING NEMO, that his father had to pause the screen to get his attention!! Children wont be the only ones so affected. Weve been watching our entire DVD collection (over 100 in all) marveling at the beautiful and crisp pictures. Great price for quality that surpasses most of the more expensive models. So glad I got this :> !!!!! On: 2004-06-01
Purchased this plasma in November 2003 and I still think it is unequivocally the best plasma on the market. At the time I probably would have felt a little more comfortable with a "better" brand name, but I just couldnt get over the great picture quality. Best Buy has all their plasmas lined up next to each other for comparison purposes, and I thought the picture on the Daewoo was by far the best in the store. I started taking my friends to various Best Buys in New York and they all agreed that the Daewoo had the best picture. So I "took a chance" and bought one and I couldnt be happier. I bought the Daewoo to replace my Hitachi rear projection HDTV. While I do get about 15 HDTV channels from Directv, the other several hundred channels looked pretty fuzzy on the rear projection, even though the one I bought was very highly rated. I believe that most if not all HDTVs have a lot of trouble displaying non-HDTV signals. I learned the hard way--and ended up giving my HDTV away. (By the way, my HDTV channels do look fantastic on the Daewoo, even though its EDTV. Maybe they dont look quite as outstanding as on an HDTV set... but the normal channels look so much better its worth the tiny give up on the HDTV channels.) Design-wise, the cabinet and stand are beautiful, especially compared to the gold Gateway (what were they thinking?). We get compliments on the Daewoo all the time--even when its turned off! The only bad thing I have to say about the Daewoo is that it is only available in a 42 inch size. (I am pretty sure the plants that make the plasmas are heavily constrained by the size of the glass sheets that they start with, so maybe Daewoo saves money by optimizing here.) According to CNET, the best distance for viewing a 42 inch set is about 6 to 10 feet away. Ours is more like 12 feet away, and it looks great to us. As far as price goes, I think I paid $2,850 from Best Buy online with free delivery (Amazon did not offer the TV for sale at the time). A month or two later, CompUsa cut the price to $1,999. Unfortunately, Best Buy online doesnt have the same price match policy as the brick and mortar stores. However, I would say that even though I missed the deal of the century pricewise, I am still very happy with my Daewoo and would give it the highest possible recommendation. And even if its not the absolute cheapest plasma on the market at this moment, it is pretty close and offers an outstanding picture. How often do you find that the best product on the market is also among the least expensive? On: 2004-05-05
The picture quality definitely blows away the Samsung, Zenith EDTVs. The picture even looks better than some of the HD models. Hopefully it wont let me down in the long term. I purchased the 4 year service plan. It should cover it nicely. On: 2004-04-21
bought set at best buy for $1999 via their pricematch policy with comp usa...then got 18 months no interest so i pay $110 a month and will have it paid off at end without interest...by then hdtv will have more channels and the price will drop to 2k for a hdtv....the Daewoo is absolutely the "best buy " for a the picture quality is awesome!! you are a fool if you spend more than 2k and get hdtv now.... edtv is awesome. dvd are perfect quality , and i just got hd cable.. about 7 channels, the picture is even better than dvd....not sure why ....but i am extremly please and cannot pull myself away from the picture quality....if you want plasma ( i am hanging above mantel) this is the one !!! by: Anonymous On: 2004-04-08
If you live above 4000 feet elevation, you may want to avoid a plasma tv, as they do not work at any elevation higher than 4000 feet. Just a warning to allyou mountain men. Latas by: Anonymous On: 2004-03-25
I just bought this Daewoo DP42SM and am amazed at the quality of the picture. Not something I was expecting to find in the Daewoo brand in plasmas. I was lucky enough to see this plasma right next to a Sony and the highly rated Panasonic. I couldnt see much of a difference. It has very good black levels and a wide choice of input options. Also comes with a several sets of cables for connecting components. Has a very nice metal and glass stand, also a futuristc looking remote. Overall, I am in awe of this thing. I did not buy it online, I bought it at my local Frys. I wont tell you for how much, but I got it for much less than the $2999 list shown here and elsewhere. I can recommend this plamsa very highly. Havent had it that long (a week), but I hope it will prove to be a good purchase in the long run. Right now, just really loving this thing, what a pleasure to watch TV (I have digital cable from Cox and the picture is excellent) and DVDs (they look great as well). I looked for about a month trying to decide. Saw some brands I definitely would not be comfortable with, they just had an inferior picture quality in the stores which took them out of the running right off the bat. What I was looking for was good color reproduction, good black levels, a sharp picture, a silver enclosure and a stand included, and a price around $3000. I was not interested in HDTV (this is EDTV, fine for my needs), nor did I want a built-in tuner since I have digital cable. The Daewoo suprisingly came out on top. Dont overlook this one, youll save some big bucks by shopping around for this one. On: 2003-12-28
This is a great plasma tv for the price range. If you are looking for coporate boardroom quality then look in the higher price range. However, if you want plasma TV with great picture quality in the entry level price range this is the one. Movie look amazing and so does regular television as more and more show are produced in higher quality and letterbox formatt. One thing to note is that all of the documentation I read before purchasing said it did not have a cooling fan, but it does. And it is nearly silent!! Unless you have your hear pressed against the top of the unit you cant hear it. I highly recommend this TV over others in the $3,000 price range.
