VERY CONVENIENT     On: 2007-05-29

We go on a tour every now and then, and
My son just graduated from Mechanical Engineering and he goes out of the country every now and then; either way, vphone
comes in handy.
My only suggestions are:
1) The cover for the v-phone should be at least attached to the
device, otherwise you will lose it.
2) I know that you can also use the speakerphone of the computer, but
sometimes you are not using your own computer and the speaker phone
that comes with the vphone is kinda "dinky",no-class, and cheap.
I cannot find a 4 terminal subminiaturized plug that is retractable or
something that looks like vphone case in the internet.
Vonage is good, this VTA is not     On: 2007-02-03

If you are considering using Vonage, avoid this router. On my network it would occasionally cause the WAN connection to drop (although my LAN connection would be fine). This meant I couldnt access the Internet sporadically. When I removed the VT1005v from my network, it worked fine. It did not matter if I had the unit in front of the firewall or behind it.

If you put the unit in front of your firewall, youll run into a host of other problems. Its port forwarding interface is awful with very few options, and the DMZ option it gives doesnt work.

When the system was not dropping my Internet connection, it worked fine. I have no complaints with Vonage. This phone adapter, on the other hand, is terrible.

Vonage is a sinking ship
by: wludford    On: 2006-10-14

I had Vonage since April, 2006. I finally switched back to Qwest after unending problems and hours and hours on the phone (my cell phone, as my Vonage line didnt work) with tech support. Here is my experience:

1) It took about 2 months and about 2 hours on the phone for them to switch my existing phone # over to Vonage. Dont be too excited about getting the first month free- if your moving an existing number it will take about that long to get it switched over.

2) After my number was finally switched over, outgoing calls were constantly being dropped after about 20-30 seconds. Incoming calls would also be dropped occasionally after about a minute. This resulted in having to call the person back, saying "sorry the call was dropped- we switched to this cheaper phone service and have been having problems...."
This is with the highest speed cable internet service available (8mbps download, 600kbps upload) and a wireless g system which has provided top notch internet service consistently while I had Vonage problems. I spent no less than 4 - 5 calls and over 5 hours on the phone with tech support trying to fix the problem. After talking with tech support, sometimes the problem would be fixed temporarily- while I was on the phone with them- but return shortly thereafter.

3) As a result of the problems I had, I asked to be credited for the months in which my phone service was not working. Be warned, they are very hard-nosed about providing any credits for poor or no service. I spoke to a tech support person about getting a credit for a month of no service, and he told me to wait until the problem had been fixed so they could determine how much credit should be given. After the problem had been fixed (temporarily), I called back and they told me they could only provide credit for the current month, not previous months of no or poor service. THEY ARE NOT CUSTOMER FRIENDLY ABOUT PROVIDING REFUNDS FOR POOR OR NO SERVICE.

4) Finally, in September, still with dropped calls from Vonage, I switched back to Qwest to get reliable phone service. I found customer service there has improved and is much better than Vonage. And they gave me 3 months free promotion for coming back.

In the end, I am happy to pay the extra $10/month (after the first 3 months free) to get phone service that works. I notice that $5 of the extra cost is for fees, etc. that the phone company has to charge but Vonage does not, which is unfortunate. In any case, I guess you get what you pay for.

One last thing: Vonage has never made a profit and many business analysts say with their current business plan, they never will. This means eventually they will either go out of business, or have to raise rates.

Save yourself the problems I had- pay the extra $ to get phone service that works.

Vonage Service Outstanding     On: 2006-09-01

Weve been using Vonage in our home for a little more than 2 years now. We recently upgraded from the Motorola Unit to the Linksys unit with the built in wirless router capability. The features that are included are awesome! The only time we ever experienced problems it turned out our broadband service was running far slower than was promised by the provider causing Vonage to not sound clear. Once they cleared that up it was back to normal. Despite what some people say we also have our Tivo and MovieBeam unit hooked up to Vonage and they work flawlessly. This Device and Service are highly recommended.
Feel moved to get involved with this one.     On: 2006-08-30

After reading countless horrible reviews, and i am not at all discounting any of them in the sense that i truely believe each of those effected feel the pain they portray, i do have to say my experience with vonage has been quite the opposite. I was an early adopter, had vonage in the early days before it became a household name. I did have a few issues here and there but other then an adapter that was bad, which by the way just took a single call and they cross shipped a new one to me, all other issues were related to something other then the service.

I first installed vonage when i was in Afghanistan stationed on very small military base with horrible connectivity. Yes call quality at times was rediculous, but it was always the isp uplinks that were the issue and i had to jump through 2 satellite connections to get back to the states. For one i was astounded that the service actually worked from there and under those conditions. I used vonage overseas for about 8 months, family couldnt have been happier as they could call me whenever they wanted, loved the service so much that we just keep it when i got back home. We have disconnected our local landline and use soley vonage for home phone. We do have cell phones that we can use as back up if need be but never have too. Is vonage perfect? Of course not, are all of the concerns about tivo, 911 and not working in a power outtage valid? Absolutely, however you fall into one of those catagories then in my opinion you cant go wrong with the feature set you get for the price. I work with ISPs regulary and cant say that i know any that block the port range required for vonage to work, however I do not know if vonage works well with DSL, specifically PPPoE implementations as I moved away from DSL quite along time ago becuase of issuues i have had. One last thing, does vonage go down once in a while, yes the service is occasionally unreachable, 3 times for me over the last 3 years, one time was vonage itself the other 2 were my ISP, however there is a neat little feature i have come to appreciate, you can forward all your calls to another number (cell phone in my case), whenever your vonage service is unreachable.

I Agree - Worst Possible Service     On: 2006-06-28

I too had a horrible experience when I needed help to set up service. After hours waiting on the phone and getting a different answer every time, I cancelled service. I still have not gotten a credit on my credit card and it has been 6 weeks. I have been calling about this and again, 15-30 minutes wait time and a different excuse every time. Unless you have a lot of free time on your hands and want to spend it on hold waiting for a Vonage representative who will say anything to get rid of you, DONT SIGN UP.
Vonage...deal or no deal     On: 2006-05-17

We have a son/missionary that lived in Mexico. We live in the Dallas area and thoroughly love the thought of talking with him any time we wanted to, FOR FREE!!! Another friend living in Italy, same story, FREE!! The only problem we had was in garbled voice and sometimes a drop call. Guess what? It isnt the Vonage end of the deal that is bad, turns out the cable companies wiring was old, bad connections, and the wrong size coax. My phone is just as clear now as any ever received from the (yuck) AT&Ts of the world.
It is NOT "just like phone service, only better"     On: 2006-05-16

Like many, I was lured away from Verizon landline to Vonage by their promises of features, unlimited calling, etc. What a mistake. Vonage does NOT work with TiVo. Let me say it again: VONAGE DOES NOT WORK WITH TIVO. Vonage will try to tell you it is because TiVo "refuses to work with them;" TiVo told me it is because the quality on Vonage is just good enough for voice calls, but not good enough to handle the digital data packet calls essential to TiVo. After 3 calls and 4 hours of stress, I gave up on using Vonage to dial up with TiVo.

No problem, I thought -- Ill just get the ethernet adapter and hook TiVo right to the Vonage router. No dice there! The Vonage router does not easily work with the adapter...I tried to call them for help with that, and after waiting 20 minutes to talk to a rep, I was told that since Id already called 3 times for the same problem, I had to wait to talk to a manager. I waited on line for 40 minutes and no one ever answered.

As I write this, I am simultaneously signing back up for Verizon (their Freedom package is only $10 more than Vonage where I live) and sitting on hold with Vonage to cancel my service. Incidentally, I have been on hold for over 30 minutes. I estimate that in the 5 weeks Ive been with Vonage, Ive spent about 8 hours on hold with them (oh yeah -- the router didnt work straight out of the package, of course).

I am by no means a Luddite. I have above average proficiency with computers and home AV equipment, and this experience has made me feel like a four-year-old. I can accept that there are problems getting these technologies to interface, but their customer service situation is the bottom of the barrel. I hope none of you satisfied customers ever have a real problem -- really, I am glad it works for some people, but if you want to do anything besides talk on the phone, this stuff is trouble. Think twice before canceling your landline service.
Dang, I can't give it 0 stars.     On: 2006-05-02

I am a systems integrator. I work with data, phone, TV and security systems everyday. I set up systems for colleges and hotels. I tried Vonage for our new office phone system. I could not get it to ring through consistently. Calls were not completed, some were dropped. For one week I had no phones at all. Customers would write e-mail or call my cell phone to ask if we were still in business. They would get messages saying that my number was disconnected or that it was not valid.

I spent over 11 hours on-line or on hold trying to get help, most of it on hold. When I called to cancel service I told them that I needed to keep the number and it would take a few days for the phone company to connect me again. They cut me off right then. I had no phone service. Qwest could not reconnect me with that number unless it was active. I had to spend 3 hours trying to get Vonage to activate the number again. Then they gave me a temporary number for 3 days, which no one knew to call, before I got my old number and same crappy service back. When I was finally connected to a land line again they gave me a $12.50 credit for my troubles.

Vonage should be put out of business. They ruined mine for almost a month. They have a cruddy product, lousy service and tech support and terrible business practices.

If you have to choose between two cans and a string and Vonage, take the cans and string. Youll be happier with the service.

Vonage IS Dante's 5th Ring of Hell     On: 2006-01-08

The initial excitement wore off after the 6th phone call to customer support/technical service. I got conflicting and confusing information ranging from how long I wait, during a reset, before plugging in my Vonage Device/Phone adapter/Broadband Router...pick your terminolgy because the Vonage folks are consistently inconsistent...to exactly where I was in the number transfer process.

Bottom line is that after three days, hours on the phone, at least half of which was on hold listening to them try to sell me more stuff, recommending cliche solutions to my no dial-tone problem, and playing THE MOST ANNOYING HOLD MUSIC EVER, they decided the problem was with my new, never-been-a-problem-before house wiring and that I need to get 5.8 MhZ VoiP cordless phones.

The only plus is the remarkable patience shown by "Kevin" in New Delhi, and "Prakash" in Detroit.

In the full embrace of a Polly-Annaesque Denial Syndrome, Im calling AT&T Call Vantage next before I forget the whole miserable idea.

Vonage terrible customer service     On: 2005-10-05

If you are sure Vonage will work with your ISP, go for it. But if not, beware! I ended up wasting over $150 and many hours of dealing with their technical support staff only to find out that Vonage is not compatible with my ISP. Their customer service is terrible. They dont respond to e-mails and the phone service is slow and poor.
Bravo Vonage     On: 2005-08-19

What a great product and service. Running out of the box-have better quality than I did with Verizon. Have had no need to call customer service so I cant report on that. Cutting my phone bill in half is the best thing. All all the nifty new features. Im fine without my land line. Thats what a cell phone is for!

Thanks, Vonage
A Dark Cloud Hangs Over This Product     On: 2005-06-03

Two things you should know before buying this product:
1) The CEO of this company, Jeff Citron, was fined 22.5 million dollars for stock manipulation (source: Time Magazine, August 23, 2004). IMO, it would be a questionable decision to go into business with this man.
2) If you have a family or you would *ever* need to rely on your land-line phone service in an emergency, you should visit the following site before purchasing Vonage: http://www.911petition.com/default.htm

That being said -- and before learning of the issues above -- I have tried Vonage and found that...
1) It is much cheaper than phone service from the Bell companies. Especially for those who make a lot of long distance calls or use a lot of features.
2) Its somewhat impractical because it isnt designed to work with the house phone wiring (Vonage recommends a cordless phone "system" -- well, today, I have five phones in my house, a cordless phone system with that many phones can run to three or four hundred dollars)
3) Unlike the phone service from the Bell companies, Vonage doesnt work during a power outage
4) Though at times the service is cystal clear (argueably clearer sounding than regular phone service), there are times when the sound quality is frustratingly poor. There have also been some lengthy outages of the service do to Vonage infrastrucure or process issues
5) Vonage does not include all those confusing fees and surcharges on the bill that the Bell companies do
6) If you have a home security system, Vonage is not for you (at the very least, call your home security provider before even thinking about ordering Vonage)

Net/net: There are a lot of low cost VOIP options (Packet 8, AT&T Call Vantage, Verizons VoiceWing -- all, IMO, reputable companies), but they are all 2nd line solutions (i.e., you should keep you existing service for emergencies). So if you need to save money on phone service, and are willing to risk some of the issues listed above, go with a company other than Vonage.
Excellent Product     On: 2005-03-19

Vonage is an excellent product to make phone calls. I just love it.
Great Quality, Low Price, and fortunately no bugs...     On: 2005-02-01

Ive been up and running with Vonage for a little over a month with my Cox cable internet, and use my phone QUITE often. Im VERY pleased with the results. Ive not run into any of the problems that some people stated they had last year. If its because of improvements, let me state what DOES work now;

1.) Touch Tone menu features work now, no matter where you call. VoIP clarity is not only digital, but high quality with Vonage, so your tones arent garbled.

2.) Vonage now has E911 service, which will direct 911 straight to the addressed registered with your Vonage account. Keep in mind, you MUST activate the service (its free) on the Vonage website. Its easy to do. You just have to enter in the address, and click "Activate E911 service".

So far, Ive been able to receive all my calls, voicemail, etc, never had any dropped calls or cutting out, no problems with caller-id, etc. Its worked flawlessly, and my phone adapter/router peacefully co-exists at the end of the line of two other routers without any change in packet prioritization. I tested it by downloading a 1GB file at 500KB/s, and making a long distance call from California to New York, and it was perfectly fine. Contrary to popular believe, regular phone voice quality requires no more than 56KB/s bit rate. If your running cable at least, that should NOT be a problem at all.

Like any service, your going to have a small minority that it wont work for, due to either technical prerequisites that arent up to par (inside or outside of their control.
Great Service, Great Price     On: 2005-01-05

This is the best phone service I have ever experienced in my life (okay, at least in this country).

You do need it to give it plenty of bandwidth - so dont bother if you have a crappy cable internet or DSL. And, yes, that quality option to reduce bandwidth utilization is a sham. Just leave it on the highest bandwidth and you will do great.

I take it with me all the time when I travel all over thew world (allows me to keep my landline number mobile) and only once I had issues when hotel restricted per room bandwidth to 128kbps - dont you just hate marriotts !!

I have had two friends who are using vonage who end up complaining about voice quality - when I asked them in detail one of them confessed reducing the bandwidth utlization setting to be less than "higest quality" and other hand bad cable wiring in the house which kept dropping the connection. So, do make sure you have plenty of bandwidth and your cable connection is rock solid (I dont know of any DSL connections that are rock solid !!)

People who say it does not have 911 service do not know what they are talking of. You have to register everytime you change location and it does not go to your local 911 center but that does not mean - no 911.

People who say it is not reliable also do not know what they are talking of. I am using it for 10 months now and I have recommended it to friends (hey, vonage to vonage calls are free - without paying anything extra !!) but never heard of this complaint.

OTHER GOOD POINTS:
* great prices
* they include all the "extra" features in that price
* cool utilities like getting voicemail on email, or ringing my cellphone and landline together (allowing me to take call from any) and server call back (i can dial any number from my computer...... without having my computer connect to my vonage phone line)
* excellent support and help forums
* mobility to take my phone anywhere

SOME COMPLAINTS:

Their international call service is crappy (at least to India) but cheap so dont bother taking it if you are only going to use it for international calls.

I also could not get my tivos modem to dial over it. When I asked their suppor they said i need to get a fax line which is $10/month extra. Since who uses fax in these internet days of efax. I decided to use wireless card to bring my Tivo online but word of caution is that you may not be able to use your Dish Settop box, Security System or some such modem-dependant service. I have heard friends who have been able to use so may be its a connection-specific issue. What I know is that I cannot get to use my TiVo and Vonage does not support it officially if you dont have a fax line.

Have a good day !!
My Vonage experience     On: 2005-01-04

I would give it 5 stars if it werent for the trouble I had transferring my old number to vonage. And the wait time I experienced one of those times when trying to contact customer service.

That said, I found that if I called during early morning hours (before 10am) I had very little wait time. Also, I believe most of my trouble transferring my old number was due to BellSouth not wanting to lose a customer. Vonage support also had the authority and the quick response to credit my account for the time that I was paying double service (BellSouth and Vonage)while waiting for the number to transfer.

After my number transferred, I really started using the service. And I am amazed at the quality. I am pretty particular when it comes to audio quality, and this service is impressive. Now I use cable internet, and frequently my download speed is 400k-Bytes / sec so it is a very good connection with a lot of bandwidth.

In order to wire the rest of my house, I went to the box on the back of my house, and unplugged the service line from BellSouth. Went inside to check for dial-tone which was successfully gone. Then I plugged the Vonage box into my nearby wall phone jack, and the house was live.

I use DishNetwork and have a 522DVR unit. Even though I expected to lose my connectivity with that box, I didnt. I have received software updates. I also ordered a movie via the remote control Saturday. That worked too.

Now please realize that there are a lot of variables. Probably the most critical is that my Cable connection is very good. Also, I have one of the newest Dish receivers. But all-in-all I have been very happy with Vonage, and it has saved me a bunch of money. My unlimited plan with BellSouth was 3xs the cost of my unlimited plan with Vonage. I see no difference in quality, and I love the convenience of checking my voicemail from work (through email or web site), as well as the ability to re-configure the call-forwarding, voice-mail, etc. from anywhere.

Stay away from Vonage.     On: 2004-11-22

My experience with Vonage has been terrible. The only thing good I can say about them is that they are the cheapest VoIP provider.
-They charge both a setup and a cancellation fee.
-Their Web site is inaccessible for large portions of the day.
-The customer service is the worst customer service I have ever encountered. The hold times are in the range of 40-45 minutes, you end up talking to people in India who have no idea how to help you and are powerless to do anything.
-My phone number transfer took over three months, even though they said it would take 20 days max. I had to submit a complaint with the FCC for them to transfer my phone number. Apparently this happens to a lot of people and submitting an FCC complaint is the best way to get it resolved.
-The voice quality is terrible, even when you are not downloading anything. You can hear people fine, but they cannot hear you. I have called people only to have them hang up on me because they cannot hear me talking. It is far worse than a cell phone.
-If you have any servers, then you have to position the Vonage modem behind your router, which prevents VoIP packet prioritization.
-If you are not comfortable configuring routers and firewalls, stay away from VoIP until it gets better.

You may wish to consider a Vonage competitor if your phone is important to you.

Very pleased with Vonage     On: 2004-11-14

I tried Vonage back in May just to see it it was really as good as people said. Id tried making phone calls over the internet before Vonage, but to me the call quality was lacking. I was skeptical, so I tried the $15.99/month plan thinking what did I have to lose.

When I connected with Vonage for the first time, I was shocked how clear the phone call was. My mother even claimed that the call sounded clearer than my regular line.

I must say that I have been very pleased with Vonage. Since May, I have moved up to the Unlimited calling package (because I ound myself making more and more long distance calls with the line) and I have added the virtual number so that my mother doesnt have to dial a long distance number to call me.

When I travel for work, I carry my modem with me and I can place and recieve calls just like I was at home. I save so much money on calling cards and long distance now.

I havent made the step to get rid of my regular phone line only because I havent figured out how to wire my alarm system into the vonage system.

I would recommend Vonage to everybody.

Please, I beg of you, do not get involved with Vonage. I must have spent 4 hours waiting on hold to reach customer service, billing, and number transfer. The only person I was able to speak to after 2 months was someone in the cancelation department! Get this, there is a $40 chage for canceling the service hidden in the contract!! While the device itself works, everything about Vonage is underhanded. All I can say is dont do it....

Excellent option for a basic phone package!     On: 2004-11-04

Now keep in mind, my phone needs are really very simple. Living in Philadelphia, my wife and I both have a great deal of friends that live in New Jersey. Fairly close, but still across state lines and considered a long-distance phone call. When all was said and done my average phone bill was consistantly running close to a hundred dollars a month!

I was desperate to find a way to keep my phone bill at a reasonable rate and in my search I was turned on to Vonage. I was a little hesitant to let go of my land-based line, but the prospect of cutting my phone bill by 75% was just far too tempting not to at least try it.

I found setting up the phone adapter was fairly easy and worked fine with a Motorola cable modem and a Netgear wireless router. Vonage has a toll-free customer service number and Ive never found getting a live rep to be any more or less difficult then with any other company. I wouldnt say its particularly easy either, but its not too difficult.

Ive had the service up and running for about two weeks now and so far I couldnt be happier! Now bear in mind, I dont make a SINGLE international call and I dont own a fax machine. My house is a twin and I can get away with using a 3 handset cordless phone system instead of a land-line. Someone with a fairly large home my not be able to do the same.

So, in closing, Id have no problem recommending the service, but only to people who are in a situation similar to mine. Someone whose phone needs are a little more complex or for a business, Id tell to stay with a ground-line.

Worst Customer Service ever experienced .....     On: 2004-10-27

Dont want to deal with this service provider again in the future. Dont be fooled by their Terms of service agreement(which is 10 pages long) and read the fine print carefully before accepting the service. They charge for everything and ridiculosly charge you a disconnection fee of $40 if you decided to get rid of them, Be careful and think twice before trying this service.

I am glad to see that Amazon pulls this item from their inventory :)
regular quality - average customer service     On: 2004-10-10

It works and it is easy to set up (almost plug and play), but sound quality is bad on intl calls and sometimes impossible to connect to cell phones overseas. Local calls quality is acceptable, but for local calls it is cheaper my local phone provider.

It DOES NOT work well on DSL lines, as upload speeds are always in the low 100s... if you have an upload speed of less than 250 and download of less than 500, you will have a very bad line with lot of noise.

Still a better alternative (if your main issue is to reduce your bill on Intl calls) is to buy calling cards you are familiar with. Not as convenient but you can connect when you want and at a low price.

Customer service: It is really hard to get to a live rep. Give it a try before you buy this service and see if you can get to a Technical support rep at the firts try w/o listening to "sorry our reps are busy" 1-866-243-4357.

Check several available discussion forums before making your decision. This is a great new technology, but quality still bad and non acceptable.

They processed my return properly and got my money refunded, no complains on that aspect

Vonage has serious problems     On: 2004-10-08

Vonage promises, but doesnt deliver. I have Vonages deluxe business package with a dedicated fax line. On the fax line, when incoming faxes call, the fax tones arent passed through: you can pick up the line and NOT hear a beep-beep-beep fax tone from the origin machine. So, the fax line is useless for incoming faxes - havent checked it with outgoing faxes yet. On the main Vonage line, fax tones are passed through. Vonage customer service has absolutely no clue about this problem, which is obviously on their end.

If you ever use your phone for any sort of touch-tone entry system - telephone banking, conference call systems, anything like that - be prepared to not be able to do that any more. VOIP mangles those tones, so you simply wont be able to make any of those sorts of calls. Sorry.

Be prepared for random dropouts if you use your internet connection while talking on the phone, and even if you dont.

Vonage customer service doesnt. Minimum hold times during the day once California wakes up (after 10 AM or so, eastern U.S.) are 20 minutes or more. A Vonage rep. just explained to me today that theyre hiring new people and training them in batches of 70 at a time, so eventually Vonage may solve the hold time problem, by having zillions of barely-trained customer service reps who will answer the phone quickly (good!) but wont actually be able to help you (bad!).

If all you ever do or plan to do is make basic long-distance phone calls where quality and reliability arent important, Vonage will save you money. If you use your phone for anything else, Vonage will cause you great aggravation.

Your inner geek will love you; your spouse might not.     On: 2004-10-05

Im not overly impressed so far. On several occassions people have said that Im breaking up when I talk to them. It was almost definitely due to high internet traffic outside of my control (and likely out of control of my broadband provider). My caller ID also stopped working at one point. I reset the Vonage device and since then, the caller ID works, and I havent noticed any breaking up problems; however, I also havent been using the phone at the same peak times as I was when I initially had that problem.

Knowing what I know now, I probably wouldve gotten a phone line installed. With Vonage, you cant use your existing phone jacks. I spent $200+ on cordless phones that work through power outlets just to keep Vonage convenient. My other choice was to wire vonage somewhere close to the incoming phone line and wire it directly to the NID. Im not sure if thats completely legal, or kosher with the phone company, but that became impractical as it wouldve turned into me wiring other parts of the house with ethernet connections (so I could use the computer(s)).

Additionally, Vonage didnt effectively advertise that you dont need a router. Thats not to say that they didnt advertise this, but rather that it wasnt really clear that this would be the case. The thought of changing cables around kept me from using Vonage for many, many months. I thought the Vonage box was going to need to be connected and that if I wanted to use the computer, Id need to change cables around. This is not the case. The Vonage adapter has a pass-through/router built in. I bought a wireless router just because I thought a router would be necessary. I got wireless just to give me more options in the future.

All in all, my inner geek is impressed with the service. However, my practical side says that the savings will never make up for the lack of (effective, responsive) 911 support, should it become necessary. Additionally, the slight technical glitches I had caused a lot of tension in my house. My wife was a little leary of the system and how she cant use the phone jacks. If the phone jacks were used, shed probably be none-the-wiser about whats really happening when one uses Vonage, and the potential pitfalls therein.
Very poor quality compared to Packet8     On: 2004-09-23

I tried Vonage and the quality was terrible. I couldnt hear the person at the other end half the time. Then I tried Packet8 and it worked perfectly. Ive had my Packet8 plugged in for months and never had to reboot it even once. The Vonage always froze up - sometimes in the middle of a call. Needless to say, I sent it back. Not recommended at all. Packet8 works much better with quality thats even better than my regular phone line.
Great rates, but quality and consistency lacking     On: 2004-09-09

I was among the very first users of Vonage and in almost two years I had the service I gradutate to ditch my regular land-line phone and use Vonage as my sole phone number.
The big motivation was to enjoy the low rates and the voice mail that is free with the account. It is just great to have your voice messages accessible via Online no matter where you are and receive e-mails that someone left you a message. I also signed up for the 911 service Vonage offers, although I doubt broadband will be around during any catastrophe.
Still, I am now wondering whether I should go back to having a regular phone line. First, you essentially have only one possible outlet to use with the Vonage service. You then need to start multiplexing the line if you want to use more than one phone in the house with it. I went with a multi-phone cordless base which works perfectly fine.
Then, when I want to use my fax machine with it, I notice that it has problems synchronizing over the VoIP quality, especially when calling abroad but even when receiving faxes. Furthermore, when calling mobile phones, in particular ones that are abroad, quality is really bad.
Finally, and that is the most irritating, I sometimes just do not have a line to use when calling out. You get the dialtone, but no calls seem to connect. Maddening as it is, when trying to call Vonage to report this outage, you sometimes get a busy signal. Their customer service too, is on par with the less-than-spectacular you love to resent from your favorite neighborhood long distance company.
As a second line, Vonage is a great option. As a main line, I am moving on.

perfect for budget users w/ an ounce of technical knowledge

I have had Vonage for a few months now and love it. My setup did require one call to tech support when my Voip modem wouldnt connect w/ Vonage, but my call was answered quickly and the problem was resolved within minutes. The calls sound great with only a very rare cell-phone-like digital sound which usually lasts no more than a few seconds. One problem I have noticed is my faxes fail more often than over a regular phone line. But I have tested my alarm system and it works perfectly. The number transfer process took several weeks (over 5) but my guess is it was MCI dragging its feet in releasing my number to Vonage because they didnt want to loose the revenue. Voip is really hurting regular phone companies becuase it is cheap and it works.

I have actually wired my Voip modem into my in-wall house phone wiring so ALL of the phones in my house work - just as they did before. There are several good web sites with info on how to do this. The one important thing to remember is to DISCONNECT your house wiring from the phone companys wiring (junction box, usually outside your home) before you connect your Voip modem to the line. Otherwise you could damage the modem.

My uncle who is only moderately technical also has the service and loves it. And he set it up himself.

Vonage v. Packet8 - Vonage Wins     On: 2004-08-15

SUMMARY: Vonage is great for second lines, but keep a regular phone line for emergencies. At just $29.99 per month, Vonage is relatively inexpensive and offers fantastic features that the regular telephone company cant match. Vonages sound quality is exactly the same as a regular phone line and the customer support is okay. In contrast, Packet8 is cheaper ($19.99 per month), has very poor customer service and mechanized sounding audio. If you want good audio quality and dont mind paying more, Vonage wins. If you dont mind lower audio quality and no customer support, Packet8 may be a better choice for you.

REVIEW: There are a number of companies that offer the ability to use your broadband internet connection to give you a telephone jack that you can plug your regular phone into. This technology is known as Voice Over IP, or VOIP for short. When you sign up, you get an adaptor you hook up to your internet connection and to a regular telephone. When it works properly, you can pick-up your phone and make calls just like you normally might, but the call gets routed over the internet.

A lot has been said about using VOIP as your only phone line, but Id sum it up this way: Dont use VOIP as your only phone line. VOIP lines can go down for many reasons, including power failures, internet outages, or VOIP network problems. Also, as of August 2004, Vonage doesnt implement 911 service the same way that your local telephone company does. Although they can set-up 911 service so that it goes to your local police department, the call will not come in on the 911 emergency line, and the police will not know where are calling from.

These issues may not seem important to you if you know about them. But, consider the possibility that the VOIP line goes down while a babysitter is watching your kids, or a guest is at the house alone, and disaster strikes. Having a regular phone line that always works is crucial.

A regular POTS telephone line is essential to have as a backup for an emegency, but given the features Vonage offers, you could probably cancel all the expensive options off of your regular phone line and use Vonage as a line 2 as your primary method of calling.

The technology is a fantastic idea and is loaded with great features, including the ability to get a telephone number in just about any area code, even if it is nowhere near where you live. Vonage gives you the ability to have as many telephone numbers (in different area codes if you want) ring to the same line. Vonage also provide caller ID, call-waiting, call-waiting caller ID, three way calling, call forwarding (including forwarding to multiple numbers at the same time), voicemail, and the ability to transfer calls.

If you pay $29.99 per month, these features are free, along with unlimited local and long distance calling to the U.S. and Canada. You can also take the adaptor with you when you travel and plug it into any internet connection (such as at a hotel) anywhere in the world, and use it just like you were sitting at home.

Ive tried Vonage and another company called Packet 8. Vonages sound quality is fantastic and reliability is good enough for a second line. In contrast, Packet8s sound quality sounds a bit mechanized or computerized. Also, Vonages customer support, while not great, is far better than Packet8 (Read my Packet 8 Review for more details).

Packet8 has one advantage over Vonage. You can get most of the features of Packet8 for $19.99 a month, whereas Vonage charges $29.99 per month. However, Vonage has much better sound quality than Packet8 and better customer service, which matters more to me than $10.00 a month. Also, Vonage offers the ability to transfer calls, which Packet8 doesnt. Vonage also supports fax calls, but the audio on Packet8 is so bad that most fax machines cant handle it.

In sum, if you dont mind the extra $10.00 per month, Vonage is the way to go. If you want cheap, wont fax or use TIVO, and you wont need support, Packet8 may be better for you.

Note: There are several other companies that offer VOIP services: VoicePulse, Broadvox, IConnectHere, Lingo, and even AT&T, but I havent tested them. Covad says that it will have a consumer VOIP offering in late 2004 or early 2005.

VoIP not there yet.     On: 2004-08-02

Vonage or the VoIP industry is not there yet... Unless you have are sitting on a T1 line. I installed VoIP on both a DSL as well as a Cable Modem. While the cable modem installation was relatively simple, DSL made me jump through hoops and spends hours on line with the Service Reps.

The actual service itself is spotty. And why not. Most of the broadbands offer download speeds in MBytes but restrict the upload to few KBytes. There is a considerable delay while talking and considerable choppiness. Most of my phone calls ended my friends asking me to hang up and call from a land line. Its frustrating like using the analog cell phones in bad areas.

The returns or changes in plans were no easy either. Read the fine print they charge you for every single change in plan and also for your returns. I believe Vonage makes most of its profits from these fine print related charges.

Final verdict, I would recommend waiting for Verizon or AT&T to launch their VoIP and then wait for positive feedback from early adopters to subscribe to the service.
Kiss POTS goodbye     On: 2004-07-12

Heres the answer to sky high phone bills. THis kit allows you to make use of your broadband internet connection to make and receive phone calls.
You hook the VT1005 adaptor to your modem. Plug your PC ethernet cord into the PC port on the moto device. Reboot modem allow it to come online. Then power up the moto box. Wait at least 5 minutes. Then plug in your phone. You will have dial tone.
I make calls to Cyprus and UK all the time on this and Ive had no issues. I have not used 911 so I cannot comment on that. However, day to day calls in and out of state have gone well after the initial teething problems that normally come up on a new device.

For stability sake, I have it parked behind a Netgear router. THis helps the moto box focus on Voip functions rather than try to do all DHCP, NAT, firewall, DNS, and gateway functions.

YOu can visit the site www.vonage.com to see all the features that come with Vonage. ALl inclusive regardless of which plan you choose.

Great Price, Great Performance, Decent Reliability     On: 2004-07-11

Ive had Vonage now for about two months and Im overall impressed with its service, features and pricing. My phone calls have been crisp and I have yet to have one drop. However, Vonage has had intermittent connection issues -- which, when encountered -- render the phone useless (you cant make a call, receive a call, or have a call forwarded to another number). So, dont expect to get the "dial tone" reliability of your plain old telephone service (POTS). Also, be aware that the service wont work if your power goes out. This is especially important in case of emergencies. While Vonage does provide 911 support by allowing you to specify the address where the device is installed and routing calls to the nearest Public Service Answering Point (PSAP), without electricity, you cant get in touch with 911.

As for call quality, its been great (on par with POTS and better than cell phones). I use a cable modem and have never experienced any choppiness or delays in the conversation, thanks, in part, to the Motorola VT1005v VTA giving preference to the voice data over the local data. Though the VT1005v doesnt have any clout on your broadband providers network, so if that pipe bogs down, you may experience call cut-out.

One oddity to report: occasionally, when I hang-up a call, the phone will ring again immediately, even though the call should have been terminated.

Overall, you get a great deal for your money (includes many "optional" POTS features, like caller ID, call waiting, 3-way calling, last call return, voicemail, and call forwarding). You can use Vonage to replace your standard phone service and save quite a bit of cash, but Id recommend having a cell phone as a back up in this case -- otherwise, keep an existing POTS line and use Vonage for your long distance. You can even get "virtual numbers" in other cities, so that loved ones can call you without paying long distance charges.

Vonage is the Best Deal for High Speed Internet Users
by: Anonymous    On: 2004-07-01

Many have attemted this but few have succeded. A relativly small company Vonage was able to provide consumer grade VOIP for Dummies. you connect the cables and 3 min after that you are on. I had the service for more than 6 months and I have most of my friends and family moved to it. Great way of justifing the High Speed internet connection too (if you dont have one yet). Quality and volume is better than any of the POTS I had, not to speak about the minimal taxes and no long distance fees. Just look on the web for Vonage Best Deal and you will get even more. Enjoy!
Happy with Vonage
by: Anonymous    On: 2004-05-28

I have had Vonage since the middle of Feb 2004. I absolutely love it. The features are cutting edge. (voicemail emailed to you..etc.) When you loose power, you will need to reset the Vonage Adapter, but that has only happened to me 2 times. When the Vonage Adapter does loose it signal, Vonage has a feature where it automatically forwards calls to an alternate number. (I use my cell phone) I am 100% satisfied with my service.
So far, so good! easy setup, clear sound
by: Anonymous    On: 2004-05-26

Got this last night took me about 20 min to unpack, register online, and get a dialtone.

Activation was easy, just had to enter the MAC address of the adapter on Vonage website, account was activated in minutes. I gave my adapter a static internal IP, and open up some ports in my router, plugged the phone, and lo and behold, I got a dialtone! I made some test phone calls, and it sounded MUCH better than a cellphone. Most people wouldnt be able to tell the difference from standard landline phone or Vonage phone in terms of sound quality. I recommend this. I have a 6megabit download DSL line, so bandwidth was no problem for me.

Excellent service, easy setup, etc.     On: 2004-04-12

I read a few negative reviews about the Vonage service, but contacted an individual whom I trust who used the service and was convinced to try it out. Needless to say, Im quite impressed. The adapter took a little longer to get up to speed when I first plugged it in (maybe 10 minutes instead of the advertised 5), but once it did there were no problems at all.

I have a Linksys BEFSR41 wired router between the ATA and my cable modem without any ports forwarded at all, and the ATA works fine -- calls are clear, crisp, and both outgoing and incoming calls work great. Bandwidth is adjustable between 30-90kbps, at the cost of a small bit of voice quality at the low range, but its still comparable to a wired phone.

Ive not had any of the troubles described by others in the negative reviews, but then again I usually have good Machine Karma(tm). Ive not missed a single call (and if my connection was down, Vonage will auto-forward to another number, in my case my cellular phone) and nobodys been able to tell the difference between my Vonage phone and a wired phone.

With the low price of the service and the excellent features provided for free, I can safely say that Ive not found a better deal or performance from a telephone company (let alone a VoIP company) around. Definitely try out Vonage.

rough start... love it now     On: 2004-04-06

I was a little skeptical after reading the reviews - they seemed to be either advertisements from Vonage or people with a personal vendetta. Within an hour of getting it set up I had decided to return it, because I was getting some of the same problems I heard from other people - extremely tinny sound and a bad echo, sporadic dial tones, and missed calls. After digging into it a little more I found that Vonage recommends opening up a few ports on your firewall for optimum performance (I put this behind a linksys wireless-b router/firewall). Id say that should be more than a recommendation - I did it and havent had a problem since. Its ports 69, 5060-5063 and 10000-20000. I used port triggering on the linksys so it only opens up the ports for communication initiated from inside my network.

In any case, it really is nice and Id say the sound quality is good to very good - at its worst its as good as my cell which is what Id be using otherwise. If Im doing a lot online while talking on the phone I can get a little static on the phone but its not bad at all and it is pretty rare. I love the online acct management and you cant beat the price. As for customer service Ive only emailed them when I had trouble setting up my voicemail and they responded with an answer within a day or 2, which satisfied me. Is there any customer support line that isnt a waste of time?

So Ive had it for almost a month now and I would definitely recommend it. For anyone who cares, I dont have any computers plugged into the Motorola - left my linksys set up the way Ive had it and plugged the Motorola into the linksys. There are limits on the 14-day trial that I probably wouldnt have been aware of if it werent for some of the bad reviews, but Id say you cant lose much by giving it a try. If you dont have the same success then drop it, but Im really glad I stuck with it.

Five bigs stars for vonage     On: 2004-04-06

Currenty Im using the Vonage digital router in England.. thatS right England!!! Ive cut my international billing from $320.00 down $25.99 per month. I would totally recommend Voange. Vonage web based interface which is so easy to use and very user friendly, you can even play back messages online from your voice mail... so cool!
awesome
by: Anonymous    On: 2004-03-31

I read reviews of bad support and all that, but the support I got was awesome. I had to take the device out of the country and the guy actually called me on an international line to troubleshoot. It works great from India and basically if you have broadband connection, kicks out any calling card BS out of biz. At 15 buks a month you get unlimited in coming calls, so I can call anyone physically in India and talk to them at virtually no cost. The quality is 1000 times better than all calling cards and much much better than most cell phone calls. The advanced features of setting voice quality, real time billing etc are also great. Be warned though that the router (Motorola) is a bit sticky, and can need a bit of tweaking if your cable provider isnt a straightforward cable/dsl connection. Once you get it set up the benefits are too good to resist.
Great Service = Big Savings     On: 2004-03-20

Im not sure about the negative reviews here. I have been using this service since Jan 2004 and yes the "start-up" had a few issues but I called tech support and I got a live person right away and they help me with the problems. I expected this with a new technology but honestly I expected much worse and in all it was so much better then I could have imagined. Most issues were due to the new motorola Voice Terminal Adapter. It was a firmware issue that is now resolved.

I am saving about $120 per month and set up my inlaws with a virtual number. I also have the fax service and it has been flawless also.

My home alarm system works perfectly also. Not one issue!

Have had a few dropped calls - about 1 in every 100 but that is getting better every day. Hmmmmmm....lets see 1/100 dropped calls or spend another $120 per month?

HELPFUL HINT: I to had to "restart" the Voice terminal every few days. To solve this I just put a timer on the VT so every night when everyone is sleeping It does a restart by itself. I have not had an issue for the past 6 weeks. It has been flawless. The tech support person also put my system on a 5 minute "ping" instead of the standard 15 minute "ping".

This system is perfect with comcast cable internet connection. I am employed in information technology, work out of my house and I do massive downloads (500MB on average at a clip). Even when I am totally stressing my network (have 5 computers going at once - all connected) I have had no voice quality issues.

I even wired the system into my home phone line system and have had no issues.

Heres the best part...Calling AT&T and Verizon and telling them you no longer need their service and listening to them tell you about all the great $50/$70 etc deals they can give you. When I told the lady I was getting everything for $35/month she was just silent...Awesome!!!

OK - Stop reading this and order already!!!!!

Stay FAR AWAY from Vonage - 0 on a Scale of 0-10     On: 2004-03-04

Initially I was enthusiastic about this service. I read an article in Newsweek, looked over their slick website and was excited. I also read all the Amazon reviews here. Most were fairly positive so I decided to give it a try.

The negative things in these reviews are very true. The audio quality is not as good as a standard landline - it sounds tinny and there is a tendency for talk-over in conversations. Technical support is nearly impossible to reach. My primary problem was a lack of dial tone when picking up the phone. This required me to manually unplug the modem they provided to re-set it. Tech support was unable to resolve this issue which started happening daily so I returned the service.

Tech support gave me a trial extension beyond the initial 14 day money back guarantee yet Vonage still changed me for a month of service and will not refund $37.50. They say this is because I went 165 minutes over the 250 minute trial limit.

AVOID THE HASSLE AND SAVE YOUR MONEY.

The future of phone service!     On: 2004-02-20

With a money back trial period, I figured I would give Vonage a try. It was super easy to install (all of three wires), and I was very quickly up and running. I chose an unlimited plan, and I desided to pick an area code local to my family. Even though they are not Vonage customers (yet), they can now call me as a local call! Not only am I saving about $65-$75 a month (which more than covers my broadband costs!), but now my family is saving too!!!

This product is great! It allows me to save money on my phone bill and have more features then with my OLD phone company. I was nervous about how it would sound but no one can tell the difference. But I can when it comes to savings!!!
Bottom Line=Savings     On: 2004-02-07

Im not one to just give away money. But after getting Vonage, I feel like thats what I have been doing for years with my local phone service. My wife and I save, on average, about $70 a month using this service. Features are free, you can travel with the service(had the same number after moving! how easy is THAT for friends and family?), and quality is great. How often do you get to pay less for a service thats much higher in value and quality? Thanks, Vonage.
Vonage = BIG Savings     On: 2004-01-20

I started using Vonage back in August and it is awesome. I cannot beleive how much money I am saving every month. I get the same bill, no surprises. Every feature I paid for with Version is FREE!! Caller ID, call waiting, 3 way calling...all FREE. I was able to keep my phone number and DUMP Verizon forever. Vonage, you have a customer for life.
