Ive had one of these for over a year now. It is, in a word, awesome.
Not much too add to other, more complete reviews, except that:
1) Its tough. I take it whenever I travel.
2) The iPhone works with it as well, though a small complain screen pops up. Other charging stands that Ive tried dont. On: 2008-02-21
I got these speakers back in December of 2004 w/ my first iPod. I still have them, and they work as well as they did day 1.
I have compared this speaker set side-by-side to a Bose SoundDock. Here are the differences:
- Bose has a better volume range. The AL tends to get distorted at higher volumes (if I had to break the volume up into a 1-10 selection, Id say distortion is noticed around a 7). The Bose stays clear and crips throughout its range.
- The Bose does have a richer (more bass-driven) sound, which does make the music seem like its better. However, a substitute for the AL is to turn the EQ on your iPod to small speakers...this assists in clarity and overall sound quality, almost matching the Bose.
The AL is a great speaker for the price. At 1/3 of the Bose, Id go for this any day, as 60% of the $300 you pay for the Bose is just for the name. Bose does make a good product, true. But, dont fall for the marketing ploys they typically adopt. On: 2008-02-21

Seems like QC is a lost art these days. Although we bought the AL iPod system for its compact design and sound quality, our pleasure was short lived. The thing just stopped working after just a few plays. The light comes on, but no sound comes out. AVOID! AVOID! Theres no excuse for new things not working. On: 2008-01-18
Its actually rather lightweight which makes me think that theres some "dead space" inside that could be removed to make this a bit more sleek. The folding design is good, though, and Ive traveled all over the world with it, so no complaints there. The sound quality is good for the size of the speakers, but nothing outstanding. There are undoubtedly better-sounding products out there, but not in this price range. On: 2008-01-08
My husband loves the audio system for his iPOD. He is enjoying it at work and says it puts out a great sound. On: 2007-12-06
Im very happy with this speaker. The sound is amazing for its size! Worth the money! On: 2007-11-22
I bought this as a gift for my sister.... but someone else bought her one too. However, She loved it so much, she kept both and brought one to her office and uses the other one for home. Good sound for a good price . No need to use headphones & others can enjoy the music too. On: 2007-11-08
What can I say...
XLNT set of travel speakers.
These dont have the ultra-rich-deep bass of the Bose system, but that can be easily adjusted with the iPod settings to compensate for what little is lacked. (Problem solved)
I have traveld with these for the last two-weeks, and think that I would need a twelve-step program if I had to give them up.
Small, portable, light-weight... Perfect!!! On: 2007-08-24
This is an inexpensive second-site unit. I use it in my classroom (teacher) and in this limited environment the sound and convenience of using an i-pod is cool. It is not a primary audio source, but as a second choice it is very good. On: 2007-05-27
These speakers were awesome for a while. For a year and a half they were perfect, with a good sound.
One day they just randomly started to short out, completely breaking my dads ipod. At first we though it was just my dads ipod since we hadnt mihandled it or anything, so i plugged my ipod in and it messed up mine too, so that it only plays out of one ear and doesnt hook up to the high speed port anymore. The batteries in this puppy last 8 full hours and the sound quality is great. Best thing is the foldable size - perfect for travling. If youre like me, youll lose the power cord quickly and then blow up the replacement in an international socket. Then the charger for the replacement batteries that you bought, youll also kill that. So stick with batteries. On: 2007-01-30
Though not very cool-looking like other models, the sound is nice for its small size.
But this device has a major flaw: a very flimsy ipod connector. After just a few months of use, I noted that the volume would fluctuate, or go completely mute, for no apparent reason.
It was the connector. My inMotion sits on my desk at the office, and I hardly ever take the ipod off of it. So there was not much chance of misuse.
I now have to move my ipod around on the docking station in order to get it to work properly or at all. But any small bump on my desk can make it misfire.
I cannot recommend it, and will most likely go Bose ASAP. On: 2007-01-16
I have really enjoyed this unit. Wouldnt change a thing. Try using the new Ray-O-Vac Hybrid rechargeable batteries. They hold their charge better when not in use. Great Unit. On: 2007-01-11
I gave this to a friend for Christmas because I have one just like it and have enjoyed it. It has a great sound system. On: 2007-01-03
We liked the size. Perfect for traveling since my son travels to Japan a couple times a year. The sound was very good for such small speakers.
I would recommend the product to anyone. On: 2007-01-03
this item plays very well when it is plugged in, but when you unplug it and try to make it portable, which it is suppose to be, it gets very staticy and just stops playing. I would not recommend it for being a protable player. On: 2006-11-09
This is a good product - sounds great, gets good battery life, everything youd hope for in an iPod dock. But it has one major flaw. The iPod docking port is really flimsy, and has no structural support aside from the actual electronics themselves. After a little bit of use, the connection between the iPod and the dock deteriorated to the point that the volume fluctuated up and down, and sometimes the sound cuts out all together.
If they added some kind of simple support so that bumping the iPod wouldnt stress the electronics, Id give this thing 5 stars. But without that, it simply breaks quickly, and no longer performs its only job - to sound good. On: 2006-11-08

Even after reading all the reviews on this product I was still amazed at the sound quality and loudness this little speaker set offers. Perfect for traveling, camping, parks, etc.
I would buy it again!
Oh, also comes with a set of plug adapters to use in other countries and also a pair of nice earbuds. On: 2006-10-08
First of all, these are good speakers, nice design but it has one flaw.
batteries...
A. it eats them up ...FAST
B. if you use batteries instead of the wall plug in it comes with, it wont go as loud, and if it thinks your playing it to loud, it will start..skipping.. or something of the sort.
But, it has good sound quality, and honeslty when your on the go, when do you really need it blasting?
Also they are just..barley large enough that you cant put them in large jean pockets sadly, but it doesnt weigh much at all.
And i really like how if i ever say..lost my Ipod somehow, it has a Cd player (walkman) hook-up so they wont become useless if i lose the ipod.
( the wall hook up also comes with many different adapters ) On: 2006-09-19
Amazing sound with surprising bass.Very light and portable. I invited a group of friends over and they counld belive the sound coming from this small unit. On: 2006-08-26
"I was replacing a portable Sony devise that I really liked, but busted one of the speakers. This is a very attractive unit, with excellent sound. I can even plug in my mini disc player. It is very portable with a nice black bag. I was very pleased at the sound of this small unit. Includes earphones, an adapter to play other devises besides IPODS and Universal outlet (powers up the IPOD while playing)...also runs on 4 AA batteries."

I purchased these speakers in order to be able to have some music on an upcoming vacation, and boy was I happy. the speakers fold up into a very compact size and even come with its own case. The extra adapter plugs allowed us to it in French Polynesia to charge our ipod, and since the speakers work with 220 voltage I did not even have to get a converter. Outside of the hotel room we used batteries for power without any problems. Most importantly the sound quality is great!!! On: 2006-07-20
I am a graduate student in linguistics working with an indigenous language in Oaxaca. I brought this speaker set to Mexico with me this year as a replacement for a bulky Panasonic cassette transcriber. It worked like a dream. Instead of using cassettes for transcription we used mp3s recorded on an Edirol digital recorder. Instead of a transcriber we used a laptop with windows media player and these Altec Lansing speakers. The sound quality was perfect for transcription, and the whole package was lighter and easier to manage than a transcriber. In my down time I got to listen to music. Cant beat that. On: 2006-06-28
Worked great for my 15GB ipod. Unpacked, plug in, put my ipod in, press play and I was good to go. Using it in a 12 x 12 office at low listening volume and find it to be just fine. On: 2006-06-27
Very pleased w/item. Compact. Easy to move from place to place. by: bixodoido On: 2006-06-03
I tested this product quite a bit when I was looking for a home stereo system for my iPod. The sound is okay at a low level--its actually better than Id have thought considering the size--but distorts quite a bit when you turn it up much. You also have to adjust the settings on your iPod to get it to play well--theres a small speaker option on most of them. The upside of course is that its portable, so you can take it with you on a trip or wherever, and its cheap. For me, however, it comes to this: when I pay as much as I did for the next generation of music (the iPod) I want it to sound like the next generation of music. With that in mind, I prefer a higher end, better sounding stereo system. On: 2006-05-22
I bought this on a trip back to the US for use in my office or hotel room when I wanted to listen to my 60 Gig Video Ipod without headphones. Its a great little package with a variety of adapter plugs (I use it in Switzerland and France) which is a nice touch for portability. Of course, it can also run on batteries. Cant use it while I have a silicon cover on it though as its a snug fit.
I have been somewhat disappointed however in a slight buzzing noise that emanates from the left speaker when the volume goes over the equivalent of 2 or 3 and have had to change the EQ setting on the Ipod to small speaker to get rid of it. The results seem somewhat muffled.

This speaker system is terrible. Once the product was properly set up, I hooked up the appropriate wires and turned it on. To describe the sound that came from that device... It was beyond bad.
To start, the sound was only coming fully from ONE of the TWO speakers. This resulted in sounding like something you would hear from a cell phone- not a stereo speaker system.
Next, I went to change the currently playing song. As I touched the iPod, the sound suddenly became horribly distorted. It was so unpleasant I wanted to immediately shut it off. And this is supposed to be portable as well? Right.
Also, the product comes packaged with a few inserts to fit the various generations of iPods available. These are a joke. They dont "fit" into the product at all- they "rest" on top of the product.
Finally, the construction of the system is poor. The material of the system and its components feels as though it was originally intended for a childs toy. A consumer would be better off buying a second dock from Apple and a set of computer speakers- which would probably cost about the same if not less. On: 2006-03-13
Sometimes you get what you pay for... and in this case, since the price tag is a tad steep, you get a great quality product. I have heard problems of the speakers blowing out but have yet to experience that myself. Another annoying factor is the lack of remote control, so you always have to manually adjust volume or the next track yourself. However, the sound quality really beats most of the other portable speakers out there esp the mid ranges. Hopefully, youll get it cheaper than what I got it for at amazon... On: 2006-03-11
The sound quality is good when the volume is low or medium. When the volume is high or very high it gets distorted. On: 2006-03-09
I am very happy with this purchase. I use the speakers in my office and take them on the road with me. The sound is great and they are very easy to fold and go. The only thing I would change is the volume controls. They are two buttons with with a plus and minus respectively. I prefer a knob or some type of dial. I highly recommend these to anyone looking to purchase a mobile set of speakers for their IPod. On: 2006-03-08
Just got these this evening and started testing them out. So far, Im very impressed. They work great with my ipod nano - the sound is great and it charges the nano too - a very handy thing I think. It also plugs into my ibook and really sounds great when using both itunes and when playing a DVD. (I wish that particular cord were a bit longer, so that the speakers could sit above & behind the computer, but Ill work it out-no big deal.)
As far as the distortion/bass complaints, it gets pretty loud before that happens. Certainly loud enough to hear throughout my apartment (granted, 4 rooms, but still...). I dont listen to too much that has wild jamming bass, so I cant judge for that. But, if you want million dollar sound, you have to pay for it. This is a simple, inexpensive answer to a basic need.
Lightweight, portable, about the size of a large paperback, with a little carrying pouch, I can forsee using it on the patio, road trips, right at home and for movie nights at an art studio I work at.
Havent tried out the battery power yet, so I cant really review that part.
Small, portable, inexpensive and nicely designed. Id say the inMotion is a pretty good choice. Thumbs up. On: 2006-02-09
Hey, these speakers are great. Decent sound. Obviously, youre not going to get deafening sound or heart-thumping bass on these itty-bitty things, but definitely a good portable system. Im pretty indecisive, but I got a really good deal on them through this site. The one flaw named in the title is that theres no remote. On: 2005-12-26
When I opened thesee inMotion speakers for my new video ipod, I was a little dissapointed because I didnt thiink that it would have good sound quality. Boy was I wrong! I pumped this baby up Christmas morning, and the base was amazing! It sounds like surround sound speakers! It is sooooooooooooooooo wonderful! I am playing music on it right now as I speak.
Well all yall out there, if your looking for a nice portable speaker, look else where, but if you want an AMAZING portable speaker for your prized ipod, then get this!
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!

This is a great little compact set of speakers if youre looking to listen to music in a small room, or for just yourself. But crank it up, and youre in for distortion of the bass and a lot of tinny sound.
Pros:
Compact. Uses batteries OR wall outlet, so its versatile and you can take it to the beach, on a picnic, etc. Folds up to the size of a small book and comes with a nice padded pouch for transport. Makes sound good enough for an office, bedroom, cubicle, etc. Takes double A batteries, not some proprietary one. Great at low-to-medium volumes.
Cons:
Distorts high and low frequency sound at medium-to-high volume. You cant use this for a party, there is no way it would play loud enough. I have one in my bedroom, and use it to play soft music (jazz, classical, soft-rock) in the evening. It does not handle bass well at all, and adds a tinny quality. You can see the speakers bumping, in fact, at a low volume. Id worry about blowing them out.
If youre looking to buy this for a party or to fill your home with music, do yourself a favor and go to Target or Best Buy and listen to this and the Bose Sounddock side by side. Youll CLEARLY hear the difference. And if the Bose (@ $299) isnt in your price range and youre not worried about compact, trendy looks, a set of $80 computer speakers with a sub can knock this system out of the water any day. On the other hand, if youre buying this system for your kids room and dont WANT them to be able to play their music loud, this is the system for you! On: 2005-11-28
Okay so I purchased this at target for 150, which is waay more than its worth. After completely DRAINING my wallet, I took it home to see if Id made a wise purchase.
I started by plugging it in, after finding the right wall-attatchment and such. The speakers were extremely small, compact, and clean-cut simple. But sometimes small isnt always good.
I played Weezer, my favorite band ever (average alternative rock) and it sounded acceptable at slightly low volumes. But then as I turned it up to medium volumes, it started getting a little scratchy, and sounded tinny and heard a little hiss coming from the speakers. When I turned it up to full volume, the speakers were overloading, there was absolutely no bass, the music sounded very crummy, there was no depth to it, you could tell that it was pumping out of tiny crappy speakers. The scratching was increasing, especially when youre playing rock music. I guess with classical you wouldnt have this problem, but if you like to listen to average rock at reasonably high volumes, forget this speaker system.
If you wanna fill up a room with clean crisp music, go for a speaker system that has larger speakers and more bass.
Anyway, I didnt like it. Its fine if youre listening to easy elevator music, but dont plan on listening to rock or rap or something, because these tiny speakers get very scratchy. by: Anonymous On: 2005-10-31
This Christmas, my mom said that Santa was gonna get me some iPod speakers. Which should i get, these or the JBL On Tour speakers? On: 2005-10-26
Not a bad little sound system. he little speakers really put out for their spamm size. Unit also works as a dock for charging your ipod. Powered by your wall outlet or by 4 AA batteries. It does not come with a remote however, and that would be helpful. On: 2005-10-20
I had to return the first one because the remote did not work at all. When I did get the replacement, the remote was quirky and did not work past 5 feet. I wanted to test the remote in the local apple store but they said that customers might take them (no, they wouldnt buy the unit if they tried the remote).
The sound is average at best but terrible for the money. On: 2005-10-06
This device has another great use as an amplifier for showing DVD video via lap top. This small portable sound system is more than a boombox for ipods. I was looking for a portable amplifer to use with my laptop and LCD projector to show video and this item fits the need perfectly. It can be run on battery power or with the electrical adapter. The sound quality is excellent and amplification is more than adequate for showing video to small groups (30-50 people or more). Couple that with its small size and portability and it is a gem. Just plug an adapter cord to the aux outlet on the ipod and the earphone socket on ones laptop. On: 2005-10-03
I found these speakers convenient to use and the sound was fine, but after just a few months, the on/off button simply cracked in half for no reason. The company has ignored my email asking about whether or not this in included in the warranty. I dont think a speaker system should fall apart after just a few months of probably less than average use. I would question buying another of these.... On: 2005-09-14
I thought that just the portability would make this a good product but the sound exceeded my expectations. I would recommend this system for anyone. On: 2005-09-12
Good design and form. Easy to use and will work with several types of iPod. The sound is flat but it is a good solution for small outdoor picnics. On: 2005-09-08
Great sound quality
I recommend to buy a remote control.... by: strandline On: 2005-09-07
These Altec inMotion speakers work well as portable iPod speakers - as long as you dont expect fantastic sound. The unit folds flat into a 8" by 5" rectangle, only 1" thick. No other iPod portable speakers that come in such a small, convenient size. When folded down, the speakers are completely protected, although the iPod port remains exposed. Best of all, the unit doubles as a dock since it charges your iPod when plugged in, either with the speakers in position or folded flat. The unit comes with a cloth carrying bag to protect the unit from scratching while on the road. The system can run on house current or on 4 AA batteries. The AC adapter takes 100-240 volts, thus automatically converting the current for foreign countries. (You still need a plug adapter for international use.)
But what about the sound? At low levels, the sound is decent, but as you increase the volume, it tends to get tinny, with a slight hiss, as though youre listening to an older recording. Sound quality is much better through my computer outfitted with small Yamaha speakers and through the ear buds. I use the inMotion system primarily to take my music outside to my deck during get-togethers; if Im traveling, I use the ear buds so I dont disturb anyone. For those who hate ear buds, however, this is an inexpensive portable device that travels well and which can be used to recharge the iPod.
This makes a great inexpensive speaker system for college students, teenagers, and travelers who would rather dispense with ear buds or share their music with the rest of the room. Ive heard the Bose system in the store, and it sounds much better than these Altec speakers; however, the Bose system is not nearly as compact. On: 2005-09-04
I must admit, the initial euphoria of having finally purchased an iPod combined with the good name of Altec Lansing resulted in my purchase of the inMotion system.
What has my experience been? Unfortunately, not satisfactory. The static that is continuously emitted from the speakers drives you crazy. This problem seems to be known to Altec as its addressed in the Instruction Manual-being put down to the compression of the music in the iPod.
Is there a solution? Yes, buy a different set of speakers. On: 2005-08-30
Everyday we use this Audio System. We take it on the boat and listen to music and books we download. We use it in the house. We use it in the yard! The quality of sound is great. The ease is wonderful. We always use rechargable batteries when it is not plugged in and they last forever with this! This was a great investment! On: 2005-08-29
I honestly dont think i couldve asked for better sound quality. The bass is unbelieveably AWESOME! These speakers have left me with no regrets...BUY THESE SPEAKERS! by: Anonymous On: 2005-08-24
These speakers were great. I absolutley loved them. Until...
The second or third day the music started skipping. I plugged it into the wall outlet and it stopped until the next day, when I gave up and packed them back in the box.

I bought a pair of the logic 3 istation speakers at the same time as the altec lansings. the istation came first, and I was very impressed at the bass, volume and quality of sound I could get from them. My ipod 60 fits right in and charges as I use it and also transfers data nicely. The altecs came and I sent them back as I wasnt as impressed. Ive had the best speaker systems in the world and can tell you that these are no match for them, but only a few unreasonable people would expect them to be. They are the best at what they do. You can adjust the eq on the ipod to small speakers and that seems to work the best for me. Its also holding up nicely after a few months of hard use.

very portable and useful speakers that come with a carrying case. The sound is okay, but if you are not a serious listener you probably wont mind.
These speakers are a good buy but definetly not a valid consideration for someone who really wants great sound On: 2005-08-15
These are great little speakers with a nice full body sound in a very compact size. These are the third set that I have purchased. The first for my daughter, then one for a graduation present, and finally one for me. Very universal for not only your iPod, but for any audio devise with an earphone plug. I use them with my RVs XM radio when I want to listen to music outside the RV. On: 2005-08-09
This Audio System was the best investment I have made in a very long time! It is small (which is good), yet can go to very high volumes. The quality is great, and i listen to my ipod more now that i have something to play it out loud with. As for travel, it folds up to the size of a book- its amazing! I always bring it to volleyball tournaments and long car rides because it is easy and I am so proud of it. It takes 4 AA batteries if you dont use the plug, and they wear out easy so be sure to pack extra. Like I said, best investment i have made in a LLLOOOONNGG time! On: 2005-08-06
We have only recently entered the world of Ipods and have never purchased speakers before. We originally bought them thinking they would be useful when we go on trips and like to listen to music. However, we set it up in our kitchen and have started to use it every night for background music (easier than blasting the music from the other room). Works great for this purpose. We also use it for sitting outside. It folds up easily and works well with the mini Ipod. Very satisified with our purchase. On: 2005-08-01
Just about six months ago, I decided that my iPod should have a couple of speakers so I wouldnt have to use headphones all the time. I finally decided on buying these speakers on Tuesday, July 26 05 from newegg.com. Newegg gave me an estimate on the arrival date which was Monday, August 1, 05. They, in fact, got to my house on Saturday, July 30. My expierence with these speakers is that they are FLAWLESS!!!! They do everything that I expected of them, and are extremely simple to use. They also put out an extremely high volume level before they start to distort, but all speakers distort at one volume or another. I am very pleased with these and I reccommend them to anyone who wants a good speaker system for a (lower) price. A+++++++++++++ On: 2005-07-27
I was going to order the Bose Speakers for my iPod - 20 Gig, but after reading these reviews, I realized that I was more interested in portability, that great sound. Therefore, I purchased these speakers and have not been disappointed. I use them with the batteries on my back porch in the evening (where a power cord would be a real pain) and they work fine for personal listening.
I agree with a number of reviewers that the sound output is not that great, but then this is not the unit to get if you want to fill a dance hall. They do fold up into a very small package and come with a travel bag, which I did use on a recent vacation.
For `big sound I play the iPod with the iTrip adapter over my inside, Bose surround sound system and that works great.

Sits on my desk next to my computer and phone. Wonderful sound quality (better than my other stereo systems) and fantastically easy to use. Highly recommended! by: Anonymous On: 2005-07-09
I was using my brothers Sony headphones and speakers. I care about quality and asthetics. The gray speakers and orange headphones did not match my iPods simple beauty. Plus, they sounded like crap. So i decided to get a new speaker set and new headphones. I shopped carefully, and got this and Apple iPod M9394G/A Earbud Headphones. Both are amazing.
The speakers do get distorted at high volume, but if you need them that loud (it really does have quite the output) you should probably connect to bigger speakers. If you want to provide music for a party of 50 people then you need to get speakers that are bigger then the Altecs paperback book size. Youll also need more then its 4 AA battery power source.
If you want to fill a room with sound for cheap, get this. It provides music, nothing more. It is amazing, and I love it. Full endorsement. On: 2005-06-27
I purchased this with my 30Gig HP Photo iPod and I absolutely LOVE it! The only bad thing that I could think of is that I had to cut my silicon case for my iPod for it to fir properly in the dock.
Like others have said, the sound isnt too great at high volumes, but the speakers are about the size of a US Quarter! I expected a lot less quality and I was really surprised by the great quality! On: 2005-06-19
The inMotion is a fabulous little speaker system. Small, easy to carry and with a surprisingly good sound quality, it has quickly become on of my favoritie electronic toys. Anybody who is disappointed with the volume and distortion level has unrealistic expectations of what a 4 inch speaker box can do. I did return my first one because the sound kept cutting out after it was on for an hour or so. To my surprise, the replacement sounds even better with clearer highs, less distortion at loud volumes and it plays louder. This leads me to suspect that the inMotion has significant quality control problems and I wonder if the bad reviews are due to the user having received a defective product. If you are not pleased with your inMotion, try to compare it to somebody elses or take it back. If you want to fill a hotel ballroom with thunderous bass, maybe you should have bought Cerwin-Vegas. I love the earphones which have a good sound, are comfortable and dont fall out of my ear. Battery life is excellent. I have only one minor complaint about my inMotion: With my iPod in a case, I cant slide it on to the connector and I have to use the auxiliary cord. I highly recommend this product and would have given it 5 stars if quality control were better. On: 2005-06-16
I LOVE these speakers! You wont believe the big speaker sound that comes out of these little guys! Enough to fill up a bedroom (or hotel room) easily. They also charge your ipod whether theyre playing or not. They fold down to a miniscule size - easily packed in your carry on. I actually use mine in the ER where I work 3-4 days a week for 12 -13 hour stretches and they work great, then fold up and fit in my backpack. If youre looking for travel speakers or just want to put these on a desk at home or work (and dont want to spend more on your speakers than you did on your ipod) these are for you. On: 2005-06-11
I felt the same way most of the reviewers felt... Great for travel...nice, neat ,compact, easy.... however not the best sound quality especially at higher volumes... but decent for the price. HOWEVER.... I recently connected my 256MB MPIO MP3 player to the speakers... adjusted the equalizer and the sound quality is actually VERY CRISP and clear at higher volumes. This makes me question the "infamous iPOD"... which doesnt have options for controlling the sound quality in each category.... On: 2005-04-26
The sound quality isnt as crisp as Ive heard, but they are reasonably loud enough to fill a hotel room. However, the louder you play the more distorted the sound. I was expecting a great product in a small package. The package is great, compact, easy to pack in your suitcase.... but the sound is just okay. Keep your expectations reasonable and youll be okay. Mostly, these speakers are great for travel, but not for high quality sound. On: 2005-04-15
I bought and tested the InMotion, JBL On Tour and I-station systems with my Ipod.
Overall the In-Motion system had the best sound - fullest range and brightest presence of the systems. JBL On Tour was a close second. On: 2005-03-20
Altec Lansing is known for providing good quality PC speakers for an affordable price. Now they have a hit on their hands in this portable speaker system for iPod. The speakers are small, easy to carry, nice looking and most importantly sound very good. The only concern I would have is that these would be useless if Apple changes the iPod connector in the next generation of iPods. Other than that I would highly recommend these for your iPod.
However you can get another version of these speakers which will work with any mp3 players and costs less than half of this. It has exact same quality and size. On: 2005-03-11
Come on?! Do you really expect to get any sort of sound out of this cheap product? If you are an ant with really small ears, then you may like the crappy sound. This is so overpriced. People are jsut falling into the whole iPod "gotta have it" syndrome, that they pick this up and may think its great?
I recommend buying a 50.00 pair of computer speakers and hooking them up instead. You will get way better sound!
The only +++ of this product is that its really small, but that is also its downside when it comes to quality sound. On: 2005-03-08
these sound nice, however, there is a major design flaw--the only way you get sound from the speakers is through batteries. The ac adapter which charges the ipod-should have also powered the speakers. THis is not a problem if you dont mind carrying around a bunch of rechargeable speakers. On: 2005-02-18
Yeah I agreed with all the people who give 4-5 stars on this product. I used this product for about a week and I love it so much and it made me forgot to feed my cat and dog on time. I love its trendy design as well as it marvelous sound output. Also it is so small so you can bring it anywhere just like your ipod. I own an ipod mini and it has no problem inserting it into the jack of the speaker.
Travel aboard? No problem, the power outage is 110-220V so you can use it around the world. One more thing I like is that I can set an alarm on my ipod and it wakes me up with my favourite playlist.
Price is fair, not too expansive but I cannot say it is cheap. But believe me, once you own it, you will never want to return it. Yeah!!! On: 2005-02-05
After reading the reviews on this website, I didnt have very high expectations of the sound quality and high volume capability of these speakers. But after plugging in my non-iPod MP3 player, I called my husband in Europe, and he could still hear the music loud and clear over the phone, even when I was in a different room than the speakers. Overall, Im very pleased with these little speakers that could, and I cant wait to hear what they sound like when we use my husbands iPod with them. On: 2005-02-03
This is a very nice portable speaker system with my iPod. I have a 20GB iPod which fits really nice into this. When Im on the road and I dont want to use my headphones I can just put my iPod in this and I can nicely listen to my playlists. The sound is pretty good but once when I had the volume on max it sounded like it wasnt on at all. Then I let it rest and the next day it was still kind of screwed up but when I waited for a few more days it got better and the sound got better too. Its not the greatest sound in the world but for portable speakers this is the best you can find! On: 2005-01-30
For the small size, you cant beat these speakers by Altec Lansing. My 40GB iPod has such a variety of songs and everything sounds great from classical to pop/rock.
Great bass and woofers. Smaller size than a boom box with a sound like good shelf speakers. After reading some reviews and trying it out in a department store, I bought from Amazon. Im really protective of these gems now and cant live without them.
Easy to set up and move around. Have not needed the speakers using batteries so I cant comment about battery life or power. Comes with a nice, durable black cloth carry bag that is somewhat protective. The speakers are great on a trip using iPod for an alarm clock with music.
There are bigger sounding speakers, but again, for the size and the money THEY ARE WOW!! On: 2005-01-21
I picked these up at Costco, thinking it would be easy enough to return them if I didnt like them. They are NOT going back!!! I am totally thrilled with the sound and love their portability! These can easily go right in a suitcase, unlike the Bose or JBLs. If youre expecting them to sound like a system with a 20 pound subwoofer, dont waste your money but for their size these babies pack a big wallop! Ive listened to jazz, classical, pop and new age...they all sound great! I dont know about rock or hip-hop, your mileage may vary. Ive thought about taking them back in favor of the newer model coming out February 1st but the specs sound pretty much the same and I dont think a remote control and speaker covers warrants spending an additional $80. On: 2005-01-08
Just got ours in the mail. Based on user reviews and the product literature it definitely has exceeded my expecations so far. My wife ordered it and after reading up on it I thought I would probably be sending it back because I didnt get the impression that it supported the iPod mini (other than using the line out jack). I was very pleasantly surpised to find that there is a cradle adapter in the box for my wifes iPod mini and I can just as easily put in my good old 30GB iPod.
Its a snap to set-up... about 2 minutes from box to sound. This is a small device, so I wasnt expecting incredible sound. Its not the type of thing youre going to use for blasting tunes at a party, but its perfect for incidental listening in a small room (bathroom, office, hotel room). It looks like a great travel companion too! It folds up into the size of a small book... perfect for taking on trips.
Given the chance to weigh in with my opinion, I probably would have waited for the most recent model (IM3)... it sounds like it has a few more bells and whistles (next generation speakers, remote, etc.) but at this point Im pretty happy and dont see the need to eat the return shipping plus pay another ~$80+ to upgrade. I gave these speakers to my wife for Christmas. She loved them and so did I. We have them at the top of our bed so that we can listen to various music before going to sleep. The quality is quite descent and they are very easy to use. Its nice to just leave the ipod in the dock so tht it charges overnight. If there could be any improvements it would just be to add a little more bass. But overall a very high quality product with excellent sound. Well worth the money. On: 2005-01-05
I got this speakers for Christmas and believe me after my ipod this is the best and useful gift, let me tell you why, I always use to say that someone should invent "something" so you can listen the music you have in your ipod and you can go around your house and do other things while you listen your favorite music without using cds (it was really uncomfortable that you had to run to change the track from your home stereo) now with this portable speakers that you can use them with alkaline batteries AA so you can move them from one place to another or you can use it by plugging it and as you listen your ipod charges too is that "something" I was waiting for.
You must wonder how the sound is like, well let me tell you that I had very low expectations but when I first used it I was shocked because it has a very good no A GREAT sound without distorsioning the sound of your music, also as a bonus they are really "good looking" ha ha and you can put it wherever because of its size.
Believe me you wont regret it On: 2005-01-05
dont expect BIG sound on any battery-powered (4 AA battreies) speaker. if you play loud and do it in your home, buy the AC-powered big speakers(of course, w/ high-power amps) instead. the inmotion was made primarily for mobile-no-available-ac-power purposes. but if you dont play loud, this should suffice. i use this mostly in the outdoors on weekends.
in the average with nothing specific, compared to other battery-powered speakers of the same size i had used before, i give it a 4 1/2*.
just want to suggest one feature though in near-future design which the inmotion lacks at the moment. why not a built-in recharger for the speaker batteries when unit is powered via AC source, this way the ipod and the speaker batteries are charged at the same time. ready to go wireless as one anytime you unplug the ac source. i am sure most of the users prefer rechargeable batteries which are much more economical and definitely environment-friendly. so disregard the one-time-use non-rechargeable batteries, as what the first-generation creative nomad did.
also, the speakers are without covers and i have the feeling that those silver circles attract curiousity for my little kids, they might just pierce them with their finger or any handy stick. i hate when that happens. On: 2005-01-01
Ill be brief, this is a great little speaker system. Ive tried several other alternatives, but Im very impressed with this solution. It is plenty loud for smaller needs. The quality is also very good, albeit from small speakers and little bass. Powered by 4AAs it seems to play quite awhile. I dont think Id like to pay $150, but for $100, this is a really good deal.
Highly recommended On: 2004-12-31
I love all the features on this system.its just that i dont know if it can connect to a computer so that i can store songs onto it. can someone please help me out. On: 2004-12-30
Picked one up over the holiday for my ipod and I LOVE it. I use it daily at my office. Its the perfect size and the sound quality is great. I would definitely recommend this to iPod owners. On: 2004-12-29
For my bithday this year, my husband bought me an iPod mini. I love it, I use it in my car all the time. For Christmas, he bought me these speakers. I immediately set them up and love them. They are so portable and sound great! They were so easy to set up. We can use them in the house and well be able to easily take them on family vacations and have all the music we love with us! Im thrilled with this gift. On: 2004-12-29
Who doesnt?
This portable speaker system is the answer. First I am not an audio geek. I have no doubt that there is a two thousand dollar receiver and/or amplifier out there somewhere that will actually enable you to hear the drummer wipe the sweat off his brow during the guitar solo. But if you wanted to hear that, what are you doing with an Ipod in the first place?
This is a speaker system for the rest of us. Light, portable, battery powered or with a DC adapter it makes your Ipod an experience for a roomful of friends to share without having to wire your stereo so it looks like a Christmas tree.
The sound quality is very good, and having a less personal (as well as less painful if you have small ears) experience enables you to use the clock feature on your Ipod as an alarm clock. One note of caution, there is no snooze alarm feature and if you are uses to smashing your clocks snooze alarm every morning, you may soon need a new Ipod and speaker system.

I received the inMotion speakers as a gift for Christmas. Theyre small, they have an awesome sound, and they are portable: 3 key reasons why they are a great match for the iPod. Theres one small problem, however. I run on Windows XP and, apparently, Windows does not recognize the inMotion speakers as a dock for the iPod. The fix for this problem (so Ive read) is buying a FireWire card and using the FireWire cable instead of the USB cable. Just beware of this and be prepared to make another purchase if you run on Windows. On: 2004-12-14
I received the Altec as a gift and was excited to use it with my iPod. The sound quality just isnt there. It sounds tinny and certain higher notes that are heard with headphones and other speakers are missing with the Altec. Its like not hearing the violin in an orchestra. Thats really annoying. Finally, theres an odd vibration when playing the iPod and I find myself constantly readjusting the iPod in the stop the vibration.
Ive switched back to my $30 cheapo speakers I got at the office supply store. Save your pennies for the Bose iPod docking station.

My inmotion worked well for the first two times I used it. After that, it started popping and evenually stopped altogether. I have attempted to call tech support on numerous occations as well as using the altec lansing customer service e-mail. I have never been able to get through either source. I am not only disappointed with the product, but even more so with the support. I have wasted my money! On: 2004-12-04
I echo what everyones said here. This little speaker set is great! <br />
<br />
The sound is amazing for something this size and can be turned up quite loud before distortion. <br />
<br />
The portability is second-to-none! Light, compact, and it runs on 4 AA batteries for a decent amount of time?? Fantastic! <br />
<br />
I use it ALL the time. Sure beats plugging it into my old Aiwa stereo and having it tied to one room! Now I can carry it from room to room, work, whatever! <br />

VERY happy. :) On: 2004-12-03
Im sold on the iPod. But Ive never been a big fan of headsets. The cords always tangle and within a half hour, my ears start hurting. Besides, Im from the pre-headset generation when earphones were for audio engineers and hi-fi fanatics. I like big-space listening while I accomplish lifes sundries ... cords that tie me to my music just get in the way. The only time I really use a headset is when I go for a long walk.
The InMotion system is a dock that allows a full interface between my iPod and my computer. Its a charger. With 4 AA batteries, its completely portable. It sure as heck beats those FM transmitter gadgets for in-car listening (not that the gadgets themselves are bad, but try keeping a strong-signal, station-free channel on a three-hour road trip). It comes with a soft carrying bag in which I can also stow the iPod. The quality of the sound is more than sufficient to keep me smiling. And, on top of all that, its up there on my list for amazing product design.
I only wish I could find a car adapter that would work with it (tried the Belkin-iPod one and couldnt get it to power the InMotion), so I wouldnt have to rely on batteries for the road trips.
Between this incredibly cool product and my iPod (oh, and the computer), I feel my modest 21st-century audio entertainment requirements are complete. On: 2004-12-02

I love music and hate clutter. The Apple I-Pod has changed my listening habits for the better, enabling me to rediscover music that I havent heard in years.
And now the inMotion speaker system enables me the luxury of travelling with a small but powerful audio system.
OK - this perhaps is not as nice sounding as the Bose SoundPort (more of an in-home product) or JBL On Stage products. However, the Altec inMotion travels far better than both of these and sound surprisingly good for its size.

This is a great product! I purchased this system due to its portability, as well as its reputation - I was not disappointed! The Convenience of having this speaker system for your iPod is immeasurable. No matter where you go, you can fold it up and take it w/ you - From room to room, or while traveling. Impressive sound, easy to set up, and much smaller than any bookcase system! When docked, & w/ an AC adaptor, it is a great way to recharge your iPod overnight. Since purchasing this product, I cant remember the last time I touched my stereo system....there is just no need for it anymore. Shop around, & you should have no problem finding one for under a hundred bucks. I doubt you will be disappointed. On: 2004-11-09
The design of this speaker system is impressive! Perfect for using your iPod in your office or dorm as a personal stereo.
When folded up, it forms a small little rectangle just 8 inches wide and only about an inch high; to set it up, just open it and flip the speakers around and you have a little stereo to plug your iPod into. Altec Lansing ships a very nice leather bag to store the device in. The entire unit weighs only 15 ounces so its easy to tuck it into a brief case or backpack.
You can run these speakers off double-A batteries for truly portable operation, or from an AC adapter that plugs into the wall.
This device accepts any of the newer iPods that dock, including the mini-iPods. You can also use this with older iPods, CD players, or other MP3 players using the auxiliary audio input.
Sound quality? Not quite as good as your home stereo speakers, but then this is really SMALL. I think the sound is quite acceptable for the size of the speakers.
Note that a newer model is out now that is even smaller and looks a little cooler. So, shop around before you decide on which version is right for you.

These speakers are great. I didnt realize when i ordered them that a new version is out. When I saw those in the Apple shop I did not like the lok of those (Gray and white) and the sound quality was just like this one. Not sure if only the look has changed. This one I bought at Amazon loks much better and works great. I put these in a good size room and the sound is good even in the highes volume. I charges the ipod while it is docked in it. Overall, just what I expected (unlike some people that expect it to perform like a high-end stereo). On: 2004-10-31

As of 10/2/04 theres a newer model out than what Amazon is selling here.
Ive seen the newer version at the Apple Store and its much "whizzier" looking. I think the newer version also has a battery saving feature; I had the original (very first) version and it was great at eating batteries.
A good price, but check the price and features of the newer version before you buy. On: 2004-09-30
I bought these speakers a few months ago after trying out the set my father already owned. I am extremely impressed with the sound quality of the speakers given their small size. In addition, the fact that the system charges the iPod is a huge bonus for the office, since I no longer have to plug in both my iPod and my speakers (the large plugs inevitably took up four outlets).
I have also taken the speakers on several trips, and they are the perfect size for travel and sound great in a hotel room. The system also comes with a cord that will allow you to plug in anything that has a headphone jack (including non-dockable iPods), so you can share the speakers with your less hip travel companion if necessary.
Some people here have complained about the sound quality, but keep in mind, these are small, portable speakers. These speakers suit their purpose perfectly well. No, they will not sound as good as the speakers in your home stereo system. Nor do these speakers sound as great as the (much larger) speakers I used to use at work, but they take up only a fraction of the desk space.
All in all a great buy.

I challenge anyone to find such a perfect iPod portable speaker with such excellent sound. Perfect for hotel rooms, bedrooms, dorm rooms, etc. The main problem is that loud bass will cause vibration. However, at levels that are conducive to still being able to hear after age 40, there is no problem.
Very convenient to carry.
Although an equilizer might be nice, Im certain it would jack the price up too much. The iPod equalizer is sufficient. Batteries to power the iPod sound impratical and expensive. The AC adapter is quite small to carry in luggage and powers/charges the iPod.
As for USB, the pass-through works fine with my Win XP HP ZD7030, which can be kind of finicky with USB devices. All iTunes and Anapod Manager functions work fine connected through this device for me, so I dont no why the other reviewer had problems. On: 2004-09-25
This unit is ok for just putting your iPod in and playing music over the speakers.
The docking pass though does not work for USB on XP. XP will not recognize it though the docking station, but if you take the iPod off the docking station and connect direct it works fine. This does not allow you to leave the iPod in the charger while connected to your PC. At least with XP and USB.
Also if you get one of those remote control units that goes on top, you cannot control the volume though the remote, you must use the volume control on the base unit.

I live in a small townhouse, where huge booming sound would be unnecessary for me and inconsiderate of my neighbors. These speakers are great for my situation - compact, good-looking with good sound quality. (If you were expecting giant defibrillating sound from a speaker set that is the size of a paperback book, well then you need to keep going and find the magic portal to Narnia because I dont know of any speakers around that will fit that bill.)
Satisfaction aside, I gave it 4 stars because I agree with some of the other reviewers:
-Some kind of indicator to show where you are in the volume scale would help
-An equalizer would be great, although Im doing ok just using the equalizer settings on the iPod
-A remote control would have been really great.
Altogether though, I am really satisfied with these and the points I listed would just be nice to have. On: 2004-09-13
I was a little worried that the small speakers would not have much volumn, Boy was I wrong! The Altec Lansing rocks! It is great for the desk, but will turn up loud enough to fill the room. Great bass response too! Highly reccommend these for your iPod. The unit is very lightweight and comes with a great bag to tote it around if you must. On: 2004-09-12

Overall, the INMOTION is a fantastic product. Great sound quality, small footprint, great look.
The only thing I find missing is that there is no type of remote control (which I knew before I purchased). I would easily pay $25-$30 more for a credit card sized remote for this unit.

As noted by some other reviewers, this product is good, but the docking function does ***not*** work properly, at least with Firewire connecting to a Mac. Copying large files over the Firewire attachment (I use my iPod to store big files that I want to work on at home) bogs the computer down to the point where I have to unplug the iPod and connect it to the cable directly. iTunes connection probably works okay, but there seems to be a problem with using the unit in full firewire disk mode. Ive returned my set and will try again with the deluxe version of the speakers later. On: 2004-08-21
I just received my INMOTION speaker system and its already what I had hoped for! Great sound but even more exciting very small and portable. I love my i-pod but dont get to enjoy it much with the ear buds. Hi,
Just received mine. Nice design and packagin. But the sound is not worth it. It sounds like a tin can

I own a pair of Sony SRS-T77 portable speakers that I bring with me on business trips. Theyre small, collapsable, and produce reasonable sound quality for a portable speaker. Combined with my iPod, they allow me to bring my music collection into my hotel room and help me relax while away from home without being tethered to headphones. That said, I also enjoy playing music via the iPod while at home, and if Im not on the road I end up being a little more demanding as far as sound quality. Thats why I bought Altec Lansings INMOTION speakers - while the Sony portables are fine when Im traveling, they just dont produce a sound Im happy with when Im at home. They were a bit more expensive, but like I said, at home Im a bit more demanding and I expect to pay a bit more for quality audio.
Technically the Altec Lansing INMOTION speakers are portable, but they are a little larger than the average portable unit, and much larger than my Sony portables. They fold up nicely and have a padded carrying case that Ill probably use one of these days. However, I tend to use my new INMOTION speakers at home as a stationary unit. We keep them on the window sill in the kitchen and play music while making meals or cleaning up.
The sound produced by the INMOTION speakers is a vast improvement over the Sony portables I was using for the same purpose. The bass response is richer and the trebles dont distort at all at high volumes (they do with the Sonys). The speakers also have their own independent volume, so they produce enough sound to fill our kitchen pretty nicely while drowning out the sound of running water when doing dishes (again, the Sony portables couldnt quite do that). The power cord means that the iPod stays charged, and its so convenient that we wind up keeping the iPod there, often playing throughout the day, rather than in the dock connected to the computer. Theres also an auxiliary audio jack that I used to plug a portable FM radio into so that I could listen to the Giants play the Reds while I did the dishes the other night. Didnt know about that when I bought the speakers, and its a nice added benefit.
I should note that while I love the INMOTION speakers, I do still use my Sony SRS T77s when I travel, mostly because they pack up smaller, are lighter, and because Im not as demanding of sound quality when Im on the road. Thats probably the only reason the Altec Lansing INMOTION speakers gets 4 stars from me and not 5. On: 2004-08-05
I own a pair of Sony SRS-T77 portable speakers that I bring with me on business trips.

I just opened my new speakers up and I absolutely LOVE them! Their size is perfect and the sound is suberb! I am going to college and I am going to live in the dorms, this speaker system is the perfect size for the small room that I am going to be living in! I fully recommend these speakers to anyone, enjoy! On: 2004-07-27
Im no audiophile, but to my ears, it sounds way nicer than a bunch of boom boxes we have that cost about the same, looks great too! Just plug in and go. Have had it for just about a week, so cant comment on reliability etc. The speakers come with a soft padded drawstring pouch for safe transportation. Am buying one as a gift along with an ipod as a must have accesory. The slight angle makes it easier to view and use the ipod menus, and nice design touches such as a soft pad on the ipods back rest (no rattling sounds while you dial up a song when its in the dock)make it a pleasure to use. I like the idea of having portable speakers for my ipod, but Altec seemed to not put much effort in to the quality of manufacturing these speakers. Within two months of use my left speakers went out. I opened it up to find that the motion to open them split the wire because they were not tucked away properly. Currently I have gone in and ghetto ridged the speakers to work. The core components are there but the assembley is bad. Sounds like other people are having better luck with theirs, just beware of potential problems. On: 2004-07-20
After weighing all the options for small speaker options for the iPod, I decided on this system. Why?
1) SIZE: Yes, other systems that are slightly bigger probably have better sound, but with the folding feature and carry bag that comes with this system, its unbeatable.
2) PORTABILITY: Closely linked with size, but with other key factors: Battery use and lack of parts. It uses 4 AA batteries and if you dont take along the power cord, its one small piece when folded. Thats it. Youre gone.
3) EASE OF USE: With the built in iPod dock that lets you charge while listening, it is just too easy. But thats not all! You can connect to your PC via the systems base and do all the normal functions. But wait, theres more! Since the iPod is docked it leaves the headphone jack open. If you happen to have the iTrip (or other FM transmitter), you can use this jack and transmit to other speaker options using FM. This is useful in situations where others might want to share your collection (e.g. the beach). Then you and others can listen.
4) THE COOL FACTOR: Im not sure how to put a price on this one, but I paid $109 and the cool factor is probably worth $75 of that. It just looks cool, and since it is clearly made for the iPod, gawkers know its probably the latest thing.
Since its so easy and sounds so good, Ive taken to moving the speakers to wherever I am in the house instead of having the home PC play through the home speakers throughout the whole house. Were not talking earth shattering sound here, but for one/two room or office use - these are excellent.
UPDATE: 8/26/05 - After a year of using these, they still rate 5 stars. I have come to realize that not everyone is obsessed with iPods, so most people have still never seen anything like this (hard to believe huh?). I still get comments on how small and/or cool these speakers are and that they sound good. There are now dozens of choices in this area and Ive played with a lot in the local Apple store. I still maintain that for the price and simplicity, this speaker system is the way to go. Is the Bose system louder? Yes, but its too cumbersome for my tastes (and pricey). Does the JBL system look cool, yes but the portability is not there. Dont get me wrong - Id take one of those sets if you want to send me one, but the Altec set still gets amazed comments and pumps out enough sound for me. On: 2004-07-20

i am replacing my cambridge speakers with this little compact unit. the inmotion sounds adequate for its size but if youre a bass junkie like me you have to have more bass. just to experiment i plugged the jack from the (cambridge) sub into the headphone jack of the ipod and voila, nice tight bass, controlled by the ipod volume, and speaker volume controlled by the inmotion panel. if you have a small sub already, youre set, otherwise add the price of a computer size sub to use with this set. i set the ipod to "treble boost" since i have the sub hooked up. the sound is wonderfully rich and you wont complain because you have highs and lows, perfect for the office! just remember when travelling around with it, youre back to so so sound, but for something this size, its great.here is the downside ive found so far. plugging into the back dock, the ipod says "do not disconnect" and the ipod never mounts. im using a windows machine configured to work with mac ipods and the ipod works when plugged directly with the computer but via the inmotion it just doesnt work. hoping to get help on this. even if i cant get it to work that way ill still keep the "inmotion". by: Anonymous On: 2004-07-09
I just bought these speakers for my new, first-ever iPod 15GB. Ordered online Sunday nite, and there they were in the mail Wednesday (from Nerds.net, just $89 plus shipping!). These speakers rock!!!! So small, and such great sound. Some people complain about bad sound at very high volumes, but who ever turns them up that high??? Ive had the speakers cranked to an uncomfortable level for me, my wife and daughters, and they sound clear as a bell. And the design is elegant, how they unfold to an upright position, with a dock in the middle for your Pod. Awesome. Im not a big earbuds fan, so these little speakers are all I need for 90% of the time. Trust me, you gotta get these speakers. They are magnifico. On: 2004-07-09
I bought these speakers thinking "oh, ill have these for fun" but these speakers sound really good. this isnt a long review. but the iPod charges whenyou have it plugged in. I havnt tried it with batteries yet. but this is a very good product! by: Anonymous On: 2004-07-09
I LOVE THIS! unfortunately it was listed wrong $89 I had my order cancelled, actual price is $109. But if u order direct from office depot they dont charge shipping or tax. so its almost the same if it was $89. Still this is worth it!! small & compact speakers are great. I recommend this product to everyone that owns an ipod. by: Anonymous On: 2004-07-09
I am totally blown away by the elegance and utility value of these speakers. Before iPOD I owned a leading edge MP3 player from Creative. iPOD + iTUNES combo blows that away by a big measure. Now, these speakers in conjunction with a iPOD is a simply must have. To begin with they are sleek and have a small form factor. Second, the iPOD can recharge while mounted on the slot provided on the speaker stand. I found the sound quality to be perfectly acceptable. I am delighted with this product and it is an absolutely must-have if you own an iPOD and intend to carry it on the road while traveling. On: 2004-07-06

"An Electronics Fan" asked if this system could support a iPod mini. The answer is YES with the use of inMotion iPod mini adapter, which is supposed to be available free from the company. Check out the Apple web site under iPod and iTunes, then "accessories" to read all about it. This is the best price Ive seen for this yet! I only gave it four stars because I dont have one yet, but Im hoping to buy one soon. by: Anonymous On: 2004-07-05
does this support mini ipods? does anyone know?? On: 2004-07-01
The INMOTION Speaker System is geart for people who travel a lot. Its folds up in to a nice small, lite package. Easy to Pack in a Suitcase. AC or Battery powered. Will also Charge your Ipod when you use it with AC power. Also has a Line-in input( I used it with a Portable DVD player worked great!) and aHeadphone Out. And can be used to Dock your Ipod as well. It isnt made to crack up the tunes to 11. But it will be load enough for most people to enjoy their fav tunes or a DVD( while out on the road. I Love mine, It will get a lot of use in Tahiti next Month. Cheers On: 2004-06-28
To keep it short and simple... 1. It is convenient to plug this in. It acts as a docking station and/or a charger. 2. It can take batteries... folds down nicely... so it gets an "A-" for portability.... 3. It takes in Aux input and has a headphone jack for output. That is a plus. 4. If it sounded better (or if it was cheaper) I would give this 5 stars. I can destroy the bass easily and this is with very good recordings (and some iTunes purchases). Seems changing the equalizer on the iPod doesnt make it much better. Thus is uber bummer... and why I only gave it 3 stars. On: 2004-06-24
When looking that the inMotion speakers, one must remember that they are portable and not meant to be a replacement for a complete audio system. That being said, these do sound amazing for their small size. Altec did a good job in placing four separate speakers in the system. You will not be disappointed if you intend to use these in an office, hotel room, dorm room, etc. You will be, however, if you hope to use them as a complete system with your iPod. The price is high, but do consider the fact that youre getting a dock too, which retails for $40 if Im not mistaken. My only complaints/suggestions for the speakers are that I wish you could use the firewire cord to power the speakers in addition to the iPod. Being able to charge the iPod with the batteries would be helpful too. I waited for Amazon to drop the price to $100 after I saw it on a few other websites. After they arrived, though, I looked online and saw the price at $89.99. I emailed Amazon and am waiting to see if I will be refunded the $10. If not I will probably consider purchasing from another company in the future. by: Anonymous On: 2004-06-18
These are really great speakers for the size. Those expecting room blasting sound are looking at the wrong type of sound projection devices. Sure youll have warped sound if you jack up the sound to max... why would anybody want to do that anyway? For your desk, your room, play or work space at reasonable sound level, these are darn incredible. Hey, I paid $149 for being an Early Adopter gadget freak! For what Amazon is charging, these are a super deal. No bigger than the size of a book, lighter than a book, you unfold it, plug it in (or use AA batteries), plop in your Rev 1 or Rev 2 iPod and youll be amazed at the quality of sound and bass. Noting the convenience, wow and cool factor, all you iPod owners should have one! On: 2004-06-10
I was quite disappointed with the quality of sound from this setup. Despite trying various EQ settings on my Ipod there was far too much distortion. It was ok if I turned the volume down, but for 1/5 the price of this I can buy computer speakers that will perform as good if not better. it I will be returning it for a refund today. On: 2004-06-10
Totally dissapointed with these overpriced speakers. Theyre worth $30 at best. Distortion was bad at 3/4 volume, unbearable at full volume. I tried various equalizer settings on my iPod mini and it simply just sucked. And to add insult to injury the buggers at Apple are chargin me a 10% restocking fee. Go buy some PC speakers or use the iTrip instead, cos THESE are so not worth $150 smack-er-roos. On: 2004-06-10
i dont own one of these (i dont even own an ipod) but my best friend has a set of these for his ipod. let me tell you, size doesnt matter. these little babies have got amazing sound, and are amagingly portable. they are no bigger than a notebook (each speaker is the size of an ipod, and there is a base they fold into) but they are better than my cd players speakers, which are about 7inches by 14inches. i definately suggest these, i think they are just a tad pricey tho. but think about it: you get surround-sound quality speakers that are above all portable. On: 2004-06-09
I just bought these speakers (after reading the reviews here of course) and I swear to god, it was one of the best things Ive bought in years (besides the IPOD I suppose). In any case, they work wonderfully, weigh next to nothing--took them on vacation and rather than bringing CDs for the rental car, just took the portable speakers and it worked great. You do get a little distortion when the volume is way up, buy overall, this is an excellent product. I take them with me to Central Park on the weekends and at least 3 people stop to comment about the speakers every time! On: 2004-06-08
Ive never reviewed a product for Amazon, but I just received the Altec Lansing speakers for my birthday, and I cant say enough about them (the brevity of this review notwithstanding). Easy to use, sound great, and the system looks cool in my office, too. Im taking my stereo (a Sony component system) home: no need for them anymore. by: Anonymous On: 2004-05-29
Big sound for such a small and portable system. Extremely handy for my travel and lifestyle. by: Anonymous On: 2004-05-19
I wasnt sure when I first read the description of this product how well it would work with my older ipod. There can be a big difference between something just being compatible and something working seamlessly. I tried it out and its great! It comes with a cover that fits over the docking area where a newer ipod would sit so that my older ipod can sit there comfortably. It also comes with a short cable to connect the older ipod headphone jack to the auxiliary port of the speakers. Im very happy with my purchase. by: Anonymous On: 2004-05-13
these speakers are light, small and provide adequate sound. Bose acoutic wave they are NOT. On: 2004-05-10
This is a very cute package and an innovative design, but I find the sound quality to be very sub-par. Its a shame too because I had really high hopes for this product! I own several sets of Altec Lansing speakers and I am a huge fan of their stuff, but these are truly disappointing :( Spend about eighty dollars less and buy the Altec Lansing VS2120s- theyre not as cute or easy to travel with, but they sound 110% better!! Got my wife an 20GB iPod for Valentines Day and she listens to it all the time. When it came to hinting about a Mothers Day present, she wanted these speakers. I have an Apple Store nearby so I stopped in and they had them on display. I was concerned that that they are so small (like two other iPods on either side of the unit in the center) that they would sound poorly, but they actually sounded very good. She got them this morning and immediately set them up. It runs on 4-AA batteries but I imagine shell use the supplied AC Adapter almost all the time accept if we were to bring them someplace where there might not be a place to plug them in. She was amazed at how compact the unit was and thought the speakers were missing until I showed her how it flips open. They also supply a short adapter to connect an external device to the speakers as well as a lined case to store the speakers when not in use. So she "docked" her iPod in it, turned the power on, pressed play and it worked like a charm. It really sounded good. She moved the unit to the kitchen, put the volume maybe halfway up and we could here it all over the floor that the kitchen is on. Set lower, it can play without disturbing others. Plus, important for her (or it was when she was always carrying it around) is that it charges the unit. Maybe now with the speakers and it being plugged in, she wont be commenting that she forgot to charge the iPod again. Granted it has only been 1 day, but shes already said multiple times today how cool it is and how good it sounds. Thats all that matters to me! ;-) Id highly recommend considering this unit to add to your iPod experience. by: Anonymous On: 2004-05-04
Just bought this for a long trip to Asia. Its pretty and light, and the sound is good at low levels. Distortion comes when turned up a bit, and despite MaxxBass Technology, does not carry heavy bass lines very well. by: Anonymous On: 2004-05-03
The balance of size, weight, and sound quality makes these speakers a travelers dream, whether or not you own an iPod. But do not expect the sound quality to compare to that produced by large floor or bookshelf speakers. My side-by-side comparisons indicated that the sound quality of these speakers was also inferior to similarly priced "2.1" satellite speakers with powered subwoofer that are designed for computers. However, given the size of these inMotion speakers, the sound quality is very impressive (as long as the volume of the sound output to the speakers is set correctly: see below).I recently used the speakers every day during a three-week business trip to the Balkans. I like to travel light and prefer not to check luggage. These speakers are extremely small and light weight and fit into my carry-on bag without any problem. The speakers come with a universal power adapter (110V to 220V) that is usable in Europe. But I left the adapter at home, brought a small battery charger, and ran the speakers on rechargeable NiMH batteries. The speakers ran about 8 hours on one set of these batteries (4 X AA 1.2V 2300mAh NiMH). The volume of the speakers was more than enough to fill my hotel room. In fact, I never felt like playing the speakers at full volume. The speakers do not seem to distort at the highest volumes. The speakers faithfully reproduced a wide range of music including hip hop, rock, folk, blues, funk, jazz, and classical. The bass response is impressive for such small speakers. I can clearly hear the bass tracks of blues CDs (Eric Claptons latest) and Rap albums (Snoop Dogg). However, the speakers do not produce the heavy bass feel you get from a powered subwoofer. That means you do not feel the bass pounding in your chest. But this is actually a good thing in hotels. Powered low frequencies travel unimpeded throughout a building, whereas the frequencies produced by these speakers are quickly absorbed by walls. This means that I was able to play the speakers relatively loud late at night without disturbing the people in the next room. A second advantage is that it takes much less energy to drive these speakers than larger speakers or a subwoofer. This allowed me to play the speakers for 8 hours on four AA batteries. I do not own an iPod and always played the speakers directly from my computer. I connected the earphones-out plug from my computer to the auxiliary jack on the iPod speakers. An extended cord is needed for this connection; the cord that comes with the speakers is too short. This worked well and allowed me to play new CDs I bought while traveling. But through experimentation, I discovered that if the volume setting on my computer was too low or too high it severely affected the sound quality of the speakers. Since the speakers have their own volume control, I can set the sound volume however I want, regardless of the volume output of my computer. However, when the volume on my computer was set too low, the speakers produced an inferior muffled sound. And when the volume on my computer was set too high, the speakers occasionally produced distorted sound. I eventually learned to adjust my computer volume to a medium level before connecting the speakers. Unfortunately, different CDs and MP3s are set with different default volume levels, so I had to reset my computer volume every time I switched albums. On: 2004-04-15
This speaker set is soooo great--the sound quality, volume, portability, AC/DC capability to go anywhere and hear your iPod without headphones. I took it to Brazil last month and played music on the beach for 8-10 hours a stretch. Awesome. On: 2004-04-13
just one addition to the comments so far. The case of the speakers is vibrating very strong. The iPod leans against this case and therefore is also vibrating. This sometimes produces loud unwanted noise and I am not sure how this affects the lifetime of the internal hard disk. On: 2004-04-07
Although this item is a little pricey and you can find options with better sound, heres why I like this unit:1. It serves as a second docking station and iPod charger. 2. Its compact and portable, i.e. smaller than most hardback books. 3. It gives me a variety of options, i.e. hotel use, take to work, to play music outside, etc. On: 2004-04-05
Being greatly impressed with my relatively inexpensive set of 2.1 Altec Lansing computer speakers, when I saw this product, I had to have it. While I realized that speakers this size could only give so much power, I was expecting a bit more out of them. The satellite speakers on my 2.1 system give you the impression youre listening to a full stereo and they are no larger than these. I dont see the sounds I get out of these speakers being any better than those from from a typical boom box. I would even say they are inferior to most modern ones. The battery life is very low as well. They suggest you could get 20 hours of playtime from a set of batteries. This is really relative to how loud you play music. If you play music at any kind of reasonable volume, the battery life should be no more than 10 hours. In the end, you could get a really nice set of portable computer speakers for a quarter of the price. While the sound these give is enough to turn some heads, its really just another expensive novelty. I have grown rather attached to these speakers for travel use, but I would probably buy something else if I could go back. On: 2004-03-26
Im pretty happy with these speakers. Beautiful design, good price. I travel a lot for work; I also have a cabin in the country. This device is perfect for both situations. The adage "Less is more" has never been truer. Five improvements/problems need to be addressed, however:1. Needs an equalizer, however crude. It could be a multitrack, it could just be a bass vs. treble dial. You will notice a popping of the (otherwise very good) speakers when the production of music youre playing is "punchy" or puts the bass/bottom up-front. Its not acceptable to have to lower the volume of the speakers to get rid of said popping. 2. The speakers need to be designed to handle more bass/bottom. See item #1 above. 3. Would it kill Altec Lansing to add an LED/LCD counter to the volume control so you know where you are on the volume scale? I dont think so. 4. The DC (AA battery) function must be able to connect to the engaged iPod, so that the AA batteries can power the speakers AND iPod, when the iPod is low on charge. 5. If item #4 above isnt workable, Altec Lansing must find battery alternatives, like a 3v battery (such as is used to power 35mm cameras) that can do the job. I am glad I bought these speakers. I am very happy with them, I really enjoy them, and I would recommend them to anybody. Cheers, Marit On: 2004-03-17
When I opened the box, I was concerned with the size of this thing! It is tiny! No way this is going to sound good. Was I wrong! Extremely compact design, easy to use, and awesome sound make this the best product for ipod I have seen. Well worth the price! On: 2004-03-07
Sure, we love to listen to our iPods on the plane, especially with noise cancelling headphones, but do you really want to be that isolated in your hotel room? These speakers have great sound considering their size and portability, run on 4 AA batteries, and look great with the iPod attached. If you travel with a laptop with decent speakers, this wouldnt be an item you need (you could just us iTunes to play your iPod), but you still may want these speakers to take the the beach, etc.Only complaints: why is the supplied power cord so ugly? The bundled power cord is the standard black cord with a AC converter attached to the plug. You can use your iPod Firewire cord and AC adapter with these speakers, but oddly enough, this will only charge the iPod and not provide power to the speakers. So far, Ive gotten about the 24 hours on the AA batteries as claimed. I also have to take off my iSkin to use this, but I guess thats my problem! by: shanx On: 2004-03-06
From its sleek looks to the thumping bass, the InMotion matches the iPods perfectly. For its size, the woofer included is mindblowing, the songs have a deep bass that one has come to expect from Lansing. Some spiffy and convenient features -- (a) A minijack .125-inch headphone jack for private listening (b) an auxiliary stereo minijack input for hookup with other audio devices such as portable CD players, laptops, older iPods, and other MP3 players (an interconnect for this purpose is included) (c) Built-in, flush-mounted power and volume controls (d) When docked inMotions iPod bay, your music player can perform all the same data transfer and synchronization functions possible via Apples usual free-standing iPod dock (e) The onboard amp can support up to 24 hours of continuous playback on just four AA batteries (not included). (f) For indoor use, it includes an AC power supply that recharges the iPod anytime it sits in the inMotion docking bay (g) Small but useful -- you can use iPods alarm feature to create a pretty functional alarm clock that plays wake-up music of your choice, very useful for travellers Its a very worthy purchase for such a small "system".. by: Anonymous On: 2004-02-29
This is a great product for the Ipod. Not only is the sound simply brilliant for such a small package, but the convenience and portability is fantastic. Its simply a must have for any Ipod user. On: 2004-02-19
Are you the frequent traveller who likes setting up a small stereo in your hotel room, and not relegate yourself to uncomfortable headphones???With all the speakers out there, I would have to say that, with regards to the iPod, this pair of speakers is the best! 1. Portability ---- The speakers fold up real nicely and are VERY easy to pack in your carry-on..... Ive often had trouble placing speakers in my bags, but these ones fold into a flat surface, which makes it very easy to stick into any little crevice 2. Loudness ---- Some small speakers never quite get loud enough --- while these speakers arent like a THX sound auditorium, they do produce a pretty loud beat! Youll be putting the volume down more often then turning it up 3. Clarity ---- Like I said, this isnt the perfect clarity, but for the price, the speakers really get the job done....... Very clear and they sound great -- I highly recommend putting your iPod on VOCAL BOOSTER for great sound on this speaker set 4. iPod connection ---- Its so cool how the iPod connects to this thing.... Unless you have the 1/2nd generation iPod (which also works with this system), then the simply put your iPod into the dock and connect no other wires! it plays from there....... unless you use AA batteries, then you will have to plug the AC adapter into the speakers, which is fine, because then the iPod will charge as it sits in the dock isnt that awesome! you can finally listen to your iPod continuously without having to worry that itll run outta battery power so overall, this is a device that you cant live without if youre an iPod lover great sound, great portability, and great charging BUY YOURS NOW!!!!
