This unit is horrible! It takes forever to eject a DVD when commanded, its excessively slow to switch to another chapter when you command skip between chapters, it wont read home-burned double -layer DVDs (!@#$!), etc. I would steer clear of this unit. Im so incensed at how bad this product is that I wont EVER buy another JVC product of any sort.

I bought THREE of these things over the last two years ... at least two of them from Amazon. (The actual model number was different -- XVC20U in black -- but its basically the same combo deck theyve been selling for several years now. Now theyve added progressive scan and DVD burner, other than that it looks like the exact same thing that I bought.)
They worked fine at first, but after a while, DVDs started freezing up on them. Oddly, I have absolutely NO trouble playing music CDs in the very same drives.
DVD freezing has happens on ALL THREE of them, but it is worse on the unit I have used most. It seems to do it less when the machine or the DVD has cooled down. It gets worse over time. Lens cleaning with a disc-brusher, lens cleaning via taking off the case for direct contact cleaning, and air-pressured dusting -- all do no good.
Anyway, thanks to JVC I have several hundred dollars worth of DVD players that dont play DVDs ... other reviews (under various model numbers) suggest theres not a chance JVC will make good on them.
I have had, in the past, good luck with JVC TVs and car stereo units, and I try to stay loyal to brands, suppliers and what not. But I seriously doubt I will be making any other JVC purchases due to these things. I suppose JVC doesnt place much value on their brand or image or they wouldnt have dumped this stuff into the marketplace.
It seems to be getting harder and harder to find companies that bother to make products that are actually worth what you pay for them. I suppose companies that rip-off customers and laugh their way to the bank must be part of the "new economy" I keep hearing about.

The on screen instructions for recording television didnt match the actual method required. The DVD/VCR switch no longer functions. Now the program I recorded cant be watched because I cant switch it to VCR, nor can I eject the tape. The warranty expired 2-months ago.

Not only was this defective from Day 1, JVC Customer service did not answer the phone for many days. Their customer service center wanted $75 for a diagnostic. Keep in mind that the cost of the item was $99. The original tape in the machine does not eject. I will never buy any JVC product again. Bad product, bad service.

Just a little bit after expiration of warranty the unit died, dvd player stopped working.

I have fairly simple needs. I want to be able to watch DVD movies and use a VCR to record programs when I am unavilable to watch them. I dont know the difference between VHS and Beta formats and really dont care about the technical details as long as I can do these two main things.
I bought this unit because I had excellent experience with two previous JVC VCRs both of which are still in use. Picture quality and sound are both fine. My only complaint, and it is major, is that the unit did not properly eject the VHS cassette. Instead, it appeared that the cassette caught on the cassette door and "reloaded" itself. The only way to eject the tape was to hold the door open with one hand until the cassette started to eject. (See the review of the HRXVC37U which appears to have a similar problem. Hmm, do you suppose they use the same tape transport mechanism?)
The unit did everything I expected and, as a bonus, also showed my digital snapshots (JPG format.) This can be done either one at a time using a familiar "Windows Explorer" type tree control or one after the other automatically as a slide show. I simply copied my snapshots to a CD and inserted the CD into the DVD player and it worked! Who knows, maybe Ill try some home movies next.
Ive returned my unit hoping for one that ejects tape cassettes properly. Ill update my opinion depending on what happens.
Update February 4, 2005
I received my replacement unit today. Much to my chagrin, the replacement unit appeared to have a new and different problem. Specifically, the automatic clock set did not work correctly. However, after several hours it began working properly. Ill wait a bit before reaching a final judgement.
A sidebar -- I had never returned a defective item to Amazon.com before. The process worked smoothly and I was generally pleased with it. Any return is a hassle but this was about as painless as I can imagine. Considerably less frustrating and time consuming than returning something to my local retailer!

I am very happy with this purchase! Both the DVD and VCR picture image are crystal clear...when pressing Play, the movie comes on immediately (unlike the Sony DVD/VCR combo I have, which simply refuses to play when the "Play" button is pushed, and comes on in its own good time, even after bringing it in to a Sony dealer for repair). I like its Fast Forward and Rewind functions on a DVD movie in that it is unlike the chapter & title still frames which move frame by frame on most DVDs, and more like the old VHS tapes which "flow" when moving back and forth. I find it to be a really good set, well worth the (quite reasonable) price. Actually, I like it so much I am buying another one as well.

I bought this because I needed a replacement for my old Lasonic, and I was disappointed. I tend to make a lot of my own home-made DVDs, and unfortunately this unit did not play them (although it claimed that it did DVD+RW) so it was not suitable to my purposes.
