Better hope something doesn't go wrong with it     On: 2008-03-17

Bought this unit in Aug 2005 and unfortunately the screen developed a crack on it last year. Sent it in to Audiovox to repair (that appears the only way they repair items is if you mail to them), and their response was that since this is an older unit they no longer carry parts for it and my option was to buy a newer model. What kind of pathetic customer service is that, a company that doesnt support its products after less than 3 years!!

I would recommend you steer clear of this item as they no longer will repair it, and perhaps steer clear of Audiovox if this is the type of support they offer.

DVD non-functioning     On: 2008-01-12

Was X-mas gift 1 year ago, hardly used but already broken. Only used by adults in a spare room, never traveled with. I was concerned about reviews on a different site, but chanced it anyway... BIG MISTAKE! DVD function used less than 6 times, totally wont function at all now. Wont have TV picture after 2009 because not digital, so just an expensive piece of junk.
BEWARE OF THIS PRODUCT     On: 2007-09-13

Junk,it scratches your movie discs and the picture is horrible!Dont buy this or youll regret every day and youll kick yourself for not taking my advice!
Don't buy this product     On: 2007-08-02

I purchased this unit about about a year and a half ago for a family road trip. We were initially pleased with the design of the unit. It worked well and was very versitile. Recently the video part of the unit went dead. Although the sound works, you have nothing but random noise on the screen. We used this product for probably less than 50 hours total. From what I can tell of other online reviews, Audiovox products are very unreliable. I feel a product that costs this much should last longer than a year and a half of very infrequent usage. Stay away from this product.
Have had for 3 years and still works great     On: 2007-04-20

I highly recommend this versatile little DVD player. It works great whether you are using the head phones, FM Modulator, or the external speakers.

My son uses it in the back seat as his personal gaming screen and DVD player. It plays all sorts of DVDs, CDs, VCDs, MP3 CDs, etc.
Good Bedside TV     On: 2007-02-08

I wear glasses and lie on my side in bed and watch tv without my glasses on (the tv has to be close on a nearby table). I had a 5" black & white tv for years and wanted a small cable ready tv to replace it. I tried a regular 13" tv and it was too large to view this closely! I decided to search for a small cable ready tv. This was the smallest cable ready tv I could find and works great for this bedside viewing. Its about 15" from my head and I dont have to wear my glasses to view it. The 10" screen is the perfect size for this use. The only problem I had was that the picture doesnt look good if viewed from a lower angle (looking up towards the screen). From straight on or above its fine, but since the built-in stand tilts the screen upwardly, you cant look straight over at it and see the best picture. I had to find a lower bedside table so that the tv was lower than my head to see a proper picture. Once I found the right height, however, the picture is fine. The few dvds I watched on it have played fine, but I cant I comment about the other uses or problems others have reported since I just purchased it mainly for a bedside table tv.
The Most Versatile TV/DVD Player on the Market     On: 2007-01-13

I received the Audiovox D1020 for Christmas 2006. I had been looking for a portable DVD player with a television tuner, but they are few and far between, and they are becoming more scarce. The D1020 isnt easy to find in retail stores, but Amazon and other web retailers stock it. If you dont need a built-in battery, this is the unit to get. When this unit came out in 2004, it had a street price of about $600.00. Now it is available for well under half that amount, the D1020 is a bargain. An inferior model with the same size screen but no tuner and no wireless headphones, the Audiovox DT102A, costs substantially more.

With the TV tuner and the detachable speakers, the D1020 makes an excellent auxiliary television that you can carry wherever you go. The two pair of wireless headphones that are supplied with the D1020 can easily cost about $70.00 if purchased separately. By the way, I confirmed that the headphones supplied with the Audiovox D1020 are compatible with the headphones supplied with our 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan. In fact, although they dont look identical, as far as I can tell there is no difference in function. With simple rabbit ears, television reception is fine inside the minivan. The D1020 could easily substitute for the installed video system in a Dodge/Chrysler minivan. just string it up with the provided mount when you need it, and stow it in the Stow-n-go storage compartment when you dont. Speaking of the van, The factory video system costs about $1700 when you figure the cost of the video system and the 6 disc changer that is required. So if you buy this Audiovox unit, rather than the automakers factory system, youll save almost $1500 plus all the finance charges for the life of the loan. Thats enough of a difference to buy a projector or a projection television for the house.

The D1020 does everything that it purports to do. I didnt give it 5 stars because not only does it not have a built-in antenna, there is no well-suited antenna that is conveniently available. I took some rabbit ears off of one of our smaller sets, and the D1020s tuner works well. Theres just no elegant place to put the antenna.

The fact that this set doesnt have a battery hasnt been a problem. Radio Shack has universal portable DVD player batteries that should be suitable. The universal batteries cost about $70.00. Also, you can use the small power boxes that you use to jumpstart cars. Just use the 12 volt adapter that you would plug into the cigarette lighter.

I can think of three ways to improve this product. First, include a ATSC (HDTV) tuner to make the television "future-proof". Secondly, include an antenna. Finally, improve the contrast level on the screen.

Not good for remote area     On: 2007-01-11

This TV/DVD player has a beautiful picture. It would be great if only needed for playing dvds. But we were hoping to get tv reception for major network channels. We could not, even after buying a higher powered antenna for it. I returned the set.
Very happy with this purchase     On: 2007-01-02

Hi shoppers, we researched many hours on dvd players, and this one fit the bill perfectly. Works great in the vehicle, works great in a hotel room, bring your kids video games and hook it up to this dvd so you can have your television while they play. Travels well, speakers come off easily so you can go without if using the cordless headphones. We have had ours almost a year and it has worked fine. Good luck and I hope that helps.
not great     On: 2006-12-06

I have had to take this player back twice. The power button broke and fell inside the machine, and the screen display is off center or discolored sometimes when I turn the machine on.
Not Bad     On: 2006-11-15

I just got it so I cant say how it will last. But its a nice unit. Nice picture and convenient. The speakers are not good, as other reviewers have mentioned, but they arent terrible either. I am mostly disappointed that there isnt a built-in tuner for the TV when mobile. It works fine at home with a cable hook-up. It has a switch for TV and Cable TV. Why have the TV switch when there isnt a tuner? I have a call into Audiovox to see if they sell an add-on. I mostly bought it to watch TV and DVDs from a car but I like it enough as it to not return it.
Having Audiovox DVD problems? Try this FIRST...     On: 2006-09-21

I posted this as a comment below, but it actually should be here separately so that perhaps it will solve some problems you may be having.

Heres a lil sumpthin you MAY or MAY NOT know about Audiovox DVD players: They **HATE** DVD+R and/or DVD+RW MEDIA... Theyll eat em or spit em out, but they generally ***WONT*** PLAY THEM!

DVD-R and/or DVD-RWs and prerecorded commercial DVDS usually work just fine. So if the DVDs youre havin probs with are +/PLUSs - just TRY a "-" DVD and see if the probs stop...

Personally, I have 5 or 6 Audiovox sideload players from 7" to 10.2" and they all will do exactly the same thing. Thats exactly WHY I get such great deals on them USED. No one seems to figure out the +/- problem and Audiovox will HAPPILY $$$ock it to you for an EASY FIX...

Failing all else, invest in an extended warranty from Amazon, Best Buy, Circuit City, eBay or wherever you buy it and let them fight with Audiovox.

Remember Audiovoxs MOTTO: Service NEXT to NONE.
(*EXACTLY* NEXT TO NONE....)

Good luck folks!
love features and all the accesories!     On: 2006-08-12

I bought this last month to travel with for my toddler. I love that it has the av hook ups. Instead of carrying around all our DVDs I now have the Conveyance to plug in our Archos media player. I love all the accessories that came with with DVD player. The head phones sound awesome and when you take off the protective cover the signal is very strong and you can hear it really well at various angles. Its great to also have to FM transmitter for my mp3s that I can now hear over my truck speakers because my truck CD player does not play MP3s. We just love it. Its well worth the price considering all the stuff that comes with it. I just wish the bag was big enough to house the headphones.
Broke right after the warranty expired.     On: 2006-05-24

This is an extremely unreliable unit. After spending 400.00 the unit lasted only 4 months. The CD will not eject out of the unit and a message appears stating that there is no signal input. I talk to Audiovox and they stated that the unit has failed because of a Video and or software problem. Even though they acknowledge it is their problem they refuse to take care of it. This is now going to cost me an additional 160.00 to have it fixed. So unless you want an aggravating experience and want to spend a total of 560.00 for an unreliable unit I wouldnt waist your money on this.
Broke the second day of use     On: 2006-02-09

I bought this as a wall-hanging unit to use in front of the treadmill. The second DVD I put in it failed to read (as being inserted) and it took forever to get it out again.

The next two DVDs worked okay, but then it took a DVD and refused to give it up. The DVD is still stuck somewhere inside.

I called Audiovox to get it repaired and they refused to honor my warranty. They want $160.00 to repair this lemon that I paid $575.00 for originally.

NEVER buy Audiovox!!
Great player !!!!     On: 2005-10-14

GREAT DVD and TV tuner ... I love it ! Other reviewers were correct in saying that the only thing that would make this better is to make it battery operated.
Everything we were looking for...and a LOT more!     On: 2005-06-10

We wanted a small, moderately priced, high-quality, flat panel, widescreen TV for our bedroom. Not only does the Audiovox D1020 meet those requirements exceptionally well (with great picture quality, marvelous color balance and saturation; extra-wide viewing angles; excellent sound; easy-to-use, intuitive controls) but it includes features wed not imagined wed get: a built-in DVD player, CD and MP3 capability, TWO wireless headsets...AND its the niftiest little travel video device, complete with a sturdy, well-designed carry-case and a wireless FM modulator to channel the sound through a vehicle stereo system. OK, to avoid static you DO have to look directly at the unit when wearing either of the headsets but thats a tiny flaw in an otherwise superior product.
What a Picture!     On: 2005-04-15

I ordered this model because of features and included accessories. The FM tramsmitter makes watching musicals in the car like watching at home. The wireless earphones fit everyone from myself to my granddaughter. I enjoyed just unpacking it. The most stunning thing, however was the beautiful picture. I was watching a movie shot in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the picture was better than at home on my 35". It was a little pricey, but worth every cent.
R-Dub     On: 2005-01-12

Ive had this for about 3 weeks now and got it just in time for a family vacation. Id expect the price to drop even more given the market competition and technology improvements, but for now, just about right given the features provided.

Pluses: Larger size screen, clear picture, wireless headphones, kept the kids occupied during an 8-hour car ride, portability.

Negatives: Viewing angle can be tricky if the drivers seat and front passenger seat are not at the same depth. IR radio transmitter tends to be a bit "scratchy" since the antennae provided is relatively short. Speakers provided sometimes rattle at higher volumes.

Portability is a double-edged sword. Convenience of transfer to another car, hotel room, etc., but then you have to break down your set-up whenever you park your car in a high-theft area due to its visibility.

Cable TV hook-up is possible, but I havent tried this yet. This could actually serve as a "nightstand" TV (maybe college student TV) since the monitor has a kickstand and complete AV/Cable tv hook-ups.

Overall, great piece of equipment to keep your car passengers entertained on long trips. It is fulfilling its purpose for this owner
VERY PLEASED     On: 2004-12-30

We are very pleased with the DVD player. The player worked great. It was very easy to install in our 2001 Suburban. The supplied straps worked fine. I was a little leary of strapping the player between the seats for fear that the player would wiggle and shake around. I went to Circuit City and purchased a 3rd set of wireless headphones from the Car Audio dept. for my 3rd child. The 3rd pair of headphones worked great with the dvd player. I did buy the extended warranty plan for fear that this unit would have some of the problems that the 12" dvd player is having, but, hopefully I will not have to use it.
almost there     On: 2004-12-15

This product boasts a lot of features, the fm modulator, wireless headphones, tv tuner. all of these functions are functional, but they are servicable not superb. all the functions work, but they are all fuzzy. there is static when using the headphones, and the fm modulator, and it is hard to pick up a strong tv signal using an antenna.

a positive is that the audiovox d 1020 can boast these features, and they are all usable. the most impressive aspect to this player is the picture quality. it is crisp and as good as any dvd player i have seen. Secondly, you do not need to buy any accessories for this player.

over all, i am happy with this player. i would recommend it for those wanting to buy a worthy widescreen portable dvd player. do not purchase it for the bells and whistles, because they are only servicable. although i do not see many portables with all these features, they are a nice add on, not a selling point.
Some Questions I Had, Answered     On: 2004-12-07

This is a preliminary review, just bought the thing, still learning about it, but here goes:

I bought this for the car, but it makes a great little tv at home, too. The screen is much nicer than my friends OEM dvd player, much bigger.

The speakers plug into the sides, not connected by wires. They snap (not too) easily on/off. The FM modulator is a widget on the lighter plug, and you can set it to a variety of stations to get it to come in. It works just fine. One drawback, the video/audio out (fm modulator) uses the same plugs as the IN, you just switch a switch. So this means you cant run the fm modulator and an input (gamecube) at the same time. But the speakers still work, so gamecube can use the ports as an "in" and the sound can then come out the speakers. Ok, I guess.

The thing comes with straps that allow you to suspend it between two seats in the car. But if the seats are tilted, then the screen is tilted. Audiovox should have done some field testing on this. But its not a huge deal, you can still see it OK. The IR transmitter for the headphones works pretty well, so long as you have a line of sight from the transmitter to the headphones. Headphones are nice, not chintzy (SP?) at all.

The screen is beautiful, the dvd player seems to work really well. Cant comment on longevity, just bought it. The whole thing comes in a case that does not have room for the headphones, but everything else fits nicely. The unit has a prop stand integral on the back, which we can use in our kitchen. It also has a standard cable input, which made it really easy to hook to our home cable system, theres different "input" settings for cable v tv v auxiliary. Tv works really well, too. Theres a standard plug for home use. Car use requires the cigarette lighter.

Theres a nice protective cover for it that doubles as the "sling" for the car seat thingy. The speakers can pop right onto this, you can do everything but use the integral prop. SO they give you another one that you can attach to this cover via velcro and it works pretty well. Nice touch.

Oh, and the remote is acceptable as well, nothing SUPER fancy, but functional. You can control the tv and the dvd with it.

Hope that helps!
Perfect for kids in back seat of the car     On: 2004-10-22

I have always been biased against the Audiovox brand since I was a kid. My sister once got an Audiovox stereo and it was awful.

That said, I hesitantly ordered this unit for my car becuase it seemed to have the perfect set of features. It comes with straps for mounting it into your car, a cigararette lighter adapter, and 2 wireless headphones.

Ive had it about a month now and it is perfect. The included straps worked perfectly in my car. The wireless headphones are great. It can even broadcast the DVD sound over your cars radio if you want.

The quality seems to be fine, and as I said, the feature set it perfect if you are looking to set up a DVD player for the kids in the back seat of your car.

I just go this item today and it is very neatly pacakged, and the sound is very good. One of out headphones was bad, so were going to see how customer service is about replacing just that piece. The quality of the picture is awesome!
