There are severe and recurring issues with DVDs jamming and making the unit unstable. The manufacturer fixed it once. And they needed everything back, the useless player all the speakers, wires, remotes, etc. to fix it.
Four months later, a major electronics chain repaired it for $149.
Now four months later its jammed up again.
NEVER, ever, will I buy another Sony anything. On: 2007-01-22
I have been a devoted Sony customer for years and have owned a few Sony DVD systems and TVs along the way. This system looks great, sounds great but is plagued with defects and has affected my devotion towards Sony products.
- Like other Sony products, this system looks really good. The player and the speakers all have aluminum casing that makes it durable, look good and produce great sound.
- The Amplifier and the speakers are powerful with 800w total output. It makes the bass sound deep and crisp.
- BUT the DVD player has some serious defects. 2 months after I got it home, it stopped playing audio CDs. I cannot understand why this problem is selective. It still plays DVDs and SACD though - thank God! 1 year later, one DVD was stuck inside and would not come out. Yet the DVD still plays from its stuck position! But I am down to 4 DVD changers... Judging from a few other customer reviews and the posts on the web, I do not believe mine is an isolated instance.
The Sony manual says that I should consult a service center in these circumstances. But I believe many of us would just tolerate these defects, with grief, instead of having to lug it for a few hundred miles and living without an entertainment system for 2 months.
I am very disappointed. I give the look and the sound 5 stars, but the quality defects take 3 stars away from an otherwise great system. On: 2005-09-27
Ive had the DAV-FR9 for almost a year now and I am very impressed by everything about it. The sound and picture are awesome. On: 2005-06-04
i bought this item from amazon for 589.00 with free shipping and no tax and that was alot cheaper than costcos 679.00 before taxes and not delevered to my home. i would say this system is pretty killer. not perfect but very close. bass is solid and highs are good. for under 600. and dilivered to your door step i would recomend it. people complain about the dvd player not working fast enough. it works fine, not speedy but i am happy with it. goodluck! aloha from hawaii On: 2005-05-31
When the unit works it sounds great and looks sharp. Problem is Sony has sent out a batch of lemon systems. The DVD players fail and become unusable. This is a common problem with the DAV-FR9 Dream System and similar models. Just pass on this one, its not worth the hastle since Sony wont pay to have these systems fixed. by: chucklesthehammer On: 2005-05-12
The smaller Dream System UTTERLY SUCKS, but this one is AWESOME.
I recently installed one for a friends parents and as we tested it out, our jaws dropped. There is so much sound and depth here that the light fixtures outside your house will vibrate. And it didnt seem to compromise on clarity a single bit. Its by far, the most bang fer yer buck. On: 2005-02-16
I bought this one in First week of January. I kinda like it but it has some limitations. Sony could have made it a lot better than right now it is.
Here are some pros:
1. Styling of this system is perfect.
2. Its Slim and pretty decent.
3. 800 watt power thats pretty decent.
4. Sound quality is amazing. for the fact all speakars are 2 way so that makes it very good.
5. slot loading and illuminated sony logo makes it more attractive.
6. you can control output for individual speakars.
cons:
1. It loads/changes DVDs very slow... also you cant unload/load a disc if you are playing one. even its slow when you change tracks.
2. When function it set to an external source or FM/AM and you try to eject a disc it automatically swiches to DVD mode.
3. limited input source, you can only hook it with two external source.
4. Very sensitive lense and firmware : if your DVD is quite old and have some scraches, it will skip or stuck. (while my cyberhome DVD player plays same DVD without any problem)
5. DVD fast forward speed is just 2X while other systems provide upto 32X.
Honestly over all this system is pretty good but very pricy for 799 or even 699. I bought it for 549 and I consider that as a fair price not a very good deal.
if your focus is sounds quality and Styling and do not have much sace to keep big speakers, I would say go for it. but if you have space to keep little big speakars I would suggest ONKYO.
NO doubt Sony is leader in making products those are very attractive, it is attractive you will fall in love with this system in first sight but DVD player is not very very functional and that takes off 2 stars out from rating. On: 2005-02-11
Decided on this system due to the high editorial review it received on cnet.com and those interested should check out that review. System sounds great especially with Dvds and has that modern, clean look. Wires are connected on the bottom of the towers and hidden from view. The 4 towers are identical so you have symmetry in the room. Looks real sharp now compared to the old system I had with wires hanging down from the walls and stands.
Im happy with this purchase, would have liked the ability to change the bass/treble settings but the standard settings still sound great, you can choose a number of preset sounds. The style, looks, and sound make this a good buy. But it wont replace high end components.
Decent volume levels especially with Dvds, I like it very loud at times. It slow to load, and may have problems reading dirty dvds. I had one rented disc that had problems until I cleaned it, then it played fine. No issues with new Dvds or the ones I own.
This is the first Sony product that I would consider buying again. My previous reviews on other products where not good. On: 2005-01-07
I recently purchased this system, and I must say that I love it. The sound is incredible, and the system looks wonderful as part of a home theater setup. Set up was also very easy, and the DVD picture quality in excellent. All in all, I feel that this was an excellent purchase, but look around, it can be had for under $599. On: 2004-11-29
do a google search on sony ch:13 and youll find 54000+ hits on complaints about their players. Their customer servise denies the problem too.
Buyer Beware!!!
