I got took for a ride on this deal. Got sent the wrong item and when I returned it. I did not get refuned my $12.88 shipping costs for sending it back to the seller. Very poor business practices. On: 2007-11-03
The first one I received came broken . . .the second one worked for 4 months, then stopped playing DVDs, then froze in the "loading" mode indefinitely. After emailing JVC, waiting a month, and getting no response, I called them only to find out they wanted me to pay to ship it to them, and pay labor for them to fix it. They said they would cover the parts for the "loading" problem, but not for the DVD problem. After looking at the incredibly poor reviews listed here, I called them back and told them to shove it; obviously its not worth the trouble to even try to work with them because it sounds like I would have to wait a couple of months for the privelege of paying them more money so they can send me back the same player that would break again within a couple of months. Im going to have a ceremonial bashing of this machine in my backyard, chalk this experience up to poor decision-making on my part, and go spend my money on a new DVD recorder not manufactured, serviced, or in any way affiliated with JVC. When I wrote this review, 51 out of 62 people rated this machine the lowest possible score; Im willing to bet that the 11 people who gave it anything but the lowest score either worked for JVC or soon experienced problems with the unit.
Im also going to register a complaint with the better business bureau, and ask those of you who experienced similar problems do the same. On: 2007-10-06
Bought this unit in late 2004 and spent mearly $500... after only a few weeks it started failing with LOADING ERROR... I called JVC and they told me the problem would go away if I unplug the unit for awhile and it was transient. The LOADING ERRROR became more and more frequent until I could not even use the unit without it failing. At that point, JVC acknowledged it as a known problem. I sent it in at my expense to factory service in late 2005 for a "permanent fix"... It was fine for a month or so then the LOADING ERRORS started again, getting more and more frequent. I put up with it until if got so frequent that I cannot use the unit for even an hour without getting a LOADING ERROR. I am trashing the unit now!! Using my dependable VHS recorder until I can get a new DVD burner. On: 2007-02-05
(Had there been an option of 0 stars I would have used that.) I purchased this product on 4-1-05 because of the features and have had other JVC products that I have been very pleased with,BUT what a disapointment!! It was only a few months old when in the middle of the night it came on by itself and began flashing "LOADING" continuosly till I unpluged it. Thought it was just some sort of fluke until a repeat a few months later. Ssme procedure fixed it again.By the way I have a good surge protector that is connected to this unit, the TV, and the satellite and no problems with anything else.Had a couple more repeats until last time no matter how long I leave it unpluged and no matter how long pluged back in it continues to flash "LOADING". After checking other reviews, I discover a lot of other people have had this and many other problems with this machine. Some have taken them to repair center and they soon fail again. I sent a letter to JVC customer service on 1/22/2007 and so far absolutely no response.I dont give up very easy so I plan to go to higher ups in the company to at least get a response.( "sorry, you bought the piece of junk", or whatever). My immediate solution was to purchase a Panasonic DMR-EH75VS from Amazon. Havent recieved it yet but the reviews I have seen so far have been great! Bottom Line: Myself,I will not even LOOK AT another JVC product of ANY kind and I intend to tell everyone I know of my bad experience. On: 2006-10-15
We purchased this unit 2 1/2 years ago. Within the first 6 months, and still under warranty, a pwb assembly had to be replaced due to electronic failure. Now, 2 years later and no longer under warrantee another electronic failure has occurred rendering the unit useless.
Messages to JVC have remained unanswered.
I would strongly suggest that if you are looking for a DVD/VCR player/recorder that you learn from my experience and go with a vendor other than JVC.

I bought it in May 2004. In Jan 2005 had the "Loading Bug". JVC Repair center "fixed" it. In Dec 2005, same problem was fixed under an extended warranty for $70.00. On July 3rd 2006 it now will not come on at all and all warranties are expired. JVC says "Sorry". On: 2006-05-28
Ive had my DR-MV1S for a little over a year, and only used it occasionally. Well, all of a sudden the front panel started flashing "loading" non-stop...accompanied by the flashing blue display light across the whole front of the machine. This happened all on its own. I wasnt even using the thing. After looking through the instruction book for a clue, I finally just tried to turn it off by holding the power button and then the stop button, as directed. Nothing. I tried unplugging the unit for a while and then plugging it back in. "Loading, loading" started flashing again. That brought me to the internet to see if anyone else has had this happen to them. Well, apparently so. Thanks for all of your posts. I wont even bother to send this garbage in for repair. On: 2006-03-08
The DVD/VCR combination is great. The manual is not well written but I was able to determine the basic operations. The best feature is the use of -RW disc you can edit the commercials out of your programs. It was difficult to figure out the use of the timer program and as a result I did not record the Superbowl. I later determined how to make the recordings via the timer. If I had the extra money I would have purchased a recorder with a hard disk. Worth the purchase. On: 2006-02-05
Hi all,
This is a fairly good model. I just found out how to solve the dreaded Loading problem. After you switch on the unit, hold the Open/Close button on the unit until the unit opens the DVD tray. Thereafter the unit should be Ok.
Thanks, On: 2006-01-26
I bought mine 12/2004. Everything "pretty much" (manual dubbing of VHS to DVD does not work as defined in the manual) worked fine for the first few months. Yes, LOADING flashes when you plug it in; it is supposed to do so (read the manual).
About April 2005, the machine became possessed. It would turn itself on at all hours and flash "LOADING" until I pressed OFF a dozen times or pulled the plug.
JVC acknowedges the "Loading Bug" problem on their web site and offers free repairs. I should have left well enough alone. I had mine "fixed" in September. In October I started having the real "Loading Bug" problems. DVD timer programmmed recordings would quit at about 20 minutes and flash "LOADING" for a while, then shut down completely. Technical support told me how to re-boot my unit, but that didnt help.
I had it "fixed" a second time in November. Didnt work when it was returned, but the re-boot got it going again. This month it now fails to implement recording of any DVD timer programs. Turns on, loads, flashes, turns off. Also it now destroys DVD-RW discs. Put a new one in. It says it needs to format it. Click OK, format. Stalls at the end of formatting, ejects the disc, and tells you to check the disk for damage. Well, now it is damaged.
The only remaining plus for this unit is the VCR. It has worked flawlessly and using it in the VHS Progressive Scan mode makes those old VHS tapes look decent on a 50" DLP. So now I have a $400 VHS tape player. Im not paying to ship it back to JVC again so JVC and I are going around the block a few times. If all else fails with JVC, I have an extended warranty w/ guaranteed replacement w/ Ultimate Electronics, but the frustration isnt worth it. Buy another brand or wait for the next generation of recorders. On: 2006-01-23
Bought this for Christmas, right out of the box the damm loading signal started flashing and nothing will work. Tried to take it back, but Comp USA would have nothing to do with it because it was just past 21 days, (it was 23 days)and suggested instead of an expensive repair job that I just buy a other model. Yeah, right. JVC should be held liable for cheating consumers and selling a defective product and Comp USA, your a rip and cheat as well. On: 2006-01-16
I think there should be a recall on this JVC recorder. I had the same problems as most others. VHS tape sticks in unit, door on VHS sticks closed, unit flashes loading ( service center did repair that problem) and finally the service center said the DVD recorder needed to be replaced. I told them to keep the unit but they sent it back anyway. I will think twice before buying anything with JVC on the box. On: 2006-01-14
This machine has never worked since I unpacked it. It flashes the "loading" message constantly as soon as it is plugged in to electrical power. On/Off didnt work, nor did anything else. I wrote to the Panasonic help desk but got no reply. I intend to buy another brand ASAP and treat this as a lesson in why its wise to check the Internet before buying expensive items. A total loss. On: 2005-12-07
Got one of these from BB Big Box Electronics retailer last year and it was intermittent at first, then the VCR half would jam and the computer would flash loading loading until I pulled the plug. Worst Buy wouldnt take it back because it was 32 day since I bought it so I had to send it to JVC service. It came back with the loading problem fixed, but the VCR side still jammed. Three months later it now flashed loading loading and does not work at all. Again I have to pay $20 to ship it back to JVC. They obviously shipped this thing long before the firmware was finished and used the absolute cheapest electronics they could find on the planet. Ill never buy another JVC product and I will no longer shop at `Worst Buy. On: 2005-11-20
I purchased this product thinking I was getting a quality product from JVC, however what I got was trouble and frustration only several weeks after buying the machine. As I have read in other reviews of this product, there is a "Loading" issue which flashes and makes the machine impossible to use. It seems to get worse as the machine warms up. I would not recommed buying this product until JVC can get the bugs worked out. Also, the instruction manual is poorly written so it does not give much information on trouble shooting especially when the machine starts flashing.
I have had good luck with other JVC products in the past, but this experience is giving me second thoughts about buying another JVC product. I hope JVC does a better job in testing its next line of DVD recorders before it turns the product over to the public for purchasing. On: 2005-11-18
I bought THREE of these things over the last two years ... at least two of them from Amazon. (The actual model number was different -- XVC20U in black -- but its basically the same combo deck theyve been selling for several years now. Now theyve added progressive scan and DVD burner, other than that it looks like the exact same thing that I bought.)
They worked fine at first, but after a while, DVDs started freezing up on them. Oddly, I have absolutely NO trouble playing music CDs in the very same drives.
DVD freezing has happens on ALL THREE of them, but it is worse on the unit I have used most. It seems to do it less when the machine or the DVD has cooled down. It gets worse over time. Lens cleaning with a disc-brusher, lens cleaning via taking off the case for direct contact cleaning, and air-pressured dusting -- all do no good.
Anyway, thanks to JVC I have several hundred dollars worth of DVD players that dont play DVDs ... other reviews (under various model numbers) suggest theres not a chance JVC will make good on them.
I have had, in the past, good luck with JVC TVs and car stereo units, and I try to stay loyal to brands, suppliers and what not. But I seriously doubt I will be making any other JVC purchases due to these things. I suppose JVC doesnt place much value on their brand or image or they wouldnt have dumped this stuff into the marketplace.
It seems to be getting harder and harder to find companies that bother to make products that are actually worth what you pay for them. I suppose companies that rip-off customers and laugh their way to the bank must be part of the "new economy" I keep hearing about.

My purpose in buying this device was to transfer my edited digital home videos from camcorder to DVD disks via the firewire connection. It would invariably require several tries to get the recorder to recognize my camera. Much patience required. When I succeeded in making a transfer to a DVD disk, the sound was not synchronized with the video picture. The sound lagged a bit. Not so bad when you have music and scenery, but when someone is talking, as in an interview, its disconcerting to the viewer. The device has been increasingly temperamental, and has finally refused to function. I am comforted in the thought that there are other poor souls sharing my frustration. Yeh, I get the "LOADING" signal too. On: 2005-10-10
If ever there was a "no star" product, it is this nightmare. Since I took it out of the box it has never worked correctly. At first it was minor things. Then after another trip back to the store for repair, an employee said "Yeah, Weve had to take all these things in for repair." What he didnt say was, again, and again, and again. It only dubs when it feels like it. Once it started flashing blue, displayed the term "LOADING" and wouldnt allow me to operate my television for a day and a half. This thing makes Regan in The Exorcist look like a beginner. Tonight it ate a tape. And frequently it only plays tapes that somehow are to its liking. This is the worst thing that "plugs in" that I have ever owned. I would say electronic device, but it is less trustworthy than anything purchased from an infommercial for $ 19.95. I will never own another JVC product. Class action lawsuit anyone? And to the person who said his was working...the clock is ticking. On: 2005-10-02
After thoroughly reading the instructions, I was able to convert several of my old VHS tapes to DVD without any problems at all. I almost didnt by this one because of all the negative reviews here....but I was able to find a refurbished unit for $149, a price to good to pass on. Im glad I bought it. The only thing I can add is make sure you connect this thing up right, and READ AND FOLLOW the directions in the manual! On: 2005-09-16
I HAD MINE FOR A YEAR AND THEN THE LOADING PROBLEM SURFACED. I HAD AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. AFTER 7 WEEKS I WAS NOTIFIED THEY COULD NOT FIX IT. SINCE THEY DIDNT SELL THIS MODEL ANYMORE I GOT MY MONEY BACK. I BOUGHT THE NEW MODEL WITH THE HARD DRIVE DR-MX1S.(THINK I MIGHT HAVE LEARNED MY LESSION BUT JVC ONLY BRAND WITH 2 TUNERS) SET IN UP. PLUGGED IT IN. FLASHED LOADING FOR 30 MINUTES BEFORE I CALLED JVC HOT LINE. OH YES YOU JUST HAVE TO BRING IT IN FOR A SOFTWARE UPGRADE. YEH RIGHT. BACK TO BEST BUY FOR A FULL REFUND. WILL NEVER OWN ANOTHER JVC ITEM IN MY LIFETIME. THESE GARBAGE UNITS SHOULD BE RECALLED. JVC COULD CARE LESS. On: 2005-09-16
The unit worked well for several months, then it became possessed. It will not stop flashing loading. It flashes loading for hours upon hours, even when there was not anything to load. I have packed mine up to ship it to Georgia to be repaired. On: 2005-09-15
The JVC DRMV1S arrived defective. The remote was also
defective. I sent it to JVC to be repaired, which
since that time, has been repaired by JVC, and working. On: 2005-09-11
After reading the reviews for the JVC DRMV1S, I will definately not even think of purchasing this product. Thanks for the warnings. On: 2005-08-14
I bought this almost a year ago at nearly $500. After spending months trying to make sense of the horrible instruction manual, I started to get the loading error. Finally shipped it off to JVC for repair (UPS at my expense $55, including packaging & insurance). After about 4 weeks finally received it back. No loading error, but now it does not recognize remote control. Periodically the display flashes every signal and icon available for no apparent reason. Can play DVD but only by selecting from unit - not remote control. DVD retracts but plastic cover door does not close. Insert a cassette, very likely it will not eject it. Have unplugged, reset, re-read the manual way too many times, JVC support site lists nothing.
I surrender, I will no longer fight this evil monster.
This is just not worth the frustration to deal with. Its going to the junk yard - I give up! Never will I buy a JVC product again.
Be warned. On: 2005-07-16
It began about 4 months in, with an occasional crash and rebooting...which just continued to get worse. Then came the horrible pixelation breakups while watching DVDs. It got so bad, I had to send it to JVC for repair. lasted another 5 months, and began to crash again, until it reached a point where it stays permanently crashed, despite unplugging and replugging it back in. I am going to write JVC a nasty letter (ironic that this product is now discontinued) and be happy with the Sony DVD recorder I just bought to replace this piece of garbage.
On: 2005-07-11
I received the product for Christmas and I have made about 10 DVDs on it. It worked ok, except I never figured out how to manually record from the VCR, I could only get it to dub the entire tape. The 3rd time I tried to watch a VHS tape in the machine it got stuck, I manually removed it. I assumed it was a problem with my tape. Then today 7/10/05 I wanted to go back and make another DVD. I havent even turned the unit on in a month, but when I did it broke. The tape started to play then the screen went blank. The machine itself just flashes "loading" over and over. I tried 100 things to make it work and did get it to stop saying loading, only now the picture is not showing on the screen. Turned it off again and then "loading" came back up. DOH! This thing is bad, thank you JVC and Best Buy for ripping me off, I will never buy from either of your companies ever again! On: 2005-06-10
That this machine was ever put on the market at all is a disgrace. It is almost impossible to use, comes with possibly the worst manual ever written, and just doesnt do half the things it is supposed to. I have never been so disappointed with a product in my life, and JVC either dont care, or are too incompetent, to support it. An absolute abomination.
Nothing with the JVC brand on will ever come into my house again. On: 2005-05-14
I wish Id read the reviews on here and at epinions BEFORE I bought it. VHS tape got stuck the very first time I used it. DVD would start to record and then say "loading". It wouldnt read JPEG files. Before this Ive never had a problem with JVC but I dont know how they could have let this one get out to the stores. This bad of a product could destroy their reputation. I took it back and switched it for a Toshiba D-VR4. I havent had trouble with it...so far anyway On: 2005-04-24
My JVC mv1su gave me trouble right out of the box. Initially, after plugging it in and turning it on I received the "HELLO" greeting on the display. It accepted both a VHS tape and a DVD-R disc I tried the one touch dubbing function but nothing happened, as if the button was just a prop for looks only and non functional, absolutely nothing. I was able to play the vhs tape but I couldnt get it recorded. I tried switching back and forth between DVD and VCR, nothing helped. When I tried to take the DVD out the tray wouldnt open and that was when I entered the "LOADING ZONE". Brand spanking new and I cant do anything with it because it is stuck in the "LOADING ZONE" blue lights flashing and the display flashing "LOADING". Unable to even turn the power off, much less record anything, I unplugged it. When I plugged it back in it was still stuck in the "LOADING ZONE". I dont care how many tuners the unit has that doesnt mean anything when even the most basic functions arent operable.

This machine just doesnt work! The first unit we bought jammed up and froze the very first time we tried loading a VHS tape to watch! We kept getting the word "loading" flashing in the front panel, and no other action. The whole thing reminded me of a computer crash! Unplugging the unit and plugging it back in did no good, so we took the unit back to where we bought it. The sales representative was able to get my tape out for me, then insisted I send the unit into the JVC service center for repair and upgrade. I reminded him that this is a brand-new machine on which we just spent $379.00 the day before! I was told, "that is what warranties are for." To make a long story short, I went to the store manager who replaced the defective unit with another brand-spanking new JVC DRMV1S. However, after less than a week of use, the word "loading" flashed on the front panel of the new unit while everything else froze up, locking in another of my tapes and a half-recorded DVD. I took the equipment back, and was offered yet another JVC DRMV1S as a replacement by the store manager. Instead, I got our money back, then turned around and bought the Panasonic DMR-E75V. Since then, I have been able to put all our home movies on DVD without a single hitch, glitch, problem or concern -- the picture and sound quality resulting from that Panasonic are GREAT! The Panasonic was also able to erase the portion of the DVD that the JVC messed up, so I was able to use the rest of that disc for dubbing!
I went back to the store 2 weeks after the last incident and saw they had a whole pallet full of JVC DRMV1S on sale for $99.00 each. I wondered at the time how many people will be made angry even at that price! Over a week later, pratically all the units were still sitting on that pallet! Evidently, word-of-mouth got out on this loser and folks are staying away in droves. I suggest you do the same!
I went to the JVC website and the company knows this "loading" freeze problem exists. Even on their site, they suggest returning your unit to one of their service centers for repair and upgrade. Why would anyone expect a customer to buy something brand new, then expect them to send it somewhere else to be fixed before they can use it? Why doesnt JVC just recall this garbage and apologize to their customers? I also now wonder why stores still carry it based on the reviews here.
Due to this incident, and because of problems other folks and I have had with previous JVC products in the past, I intend to never buy JVC again. Wish I could give this item zero stars. On: 2005-04-13
I found that dubbing my old home movies to DVDs using the JVC DR-MV1S rather confusing but produced good results. Unfortunately, I no longer can play the DVDs I created on this unit. It has gone into a constant state of initialization where the unit display flashes LOADING over and over. This is the second unit I have had as I had to return the first one because it would not eject the VCR tape without unplugging and replugging the electricity to the unit. Before going into a constant state of initialization, the second one also developed a high pitch noise when playing DVDs and then it would only play some of a DVD before the picture would become garbled. Essentially, I cant get it fixed and Ive only had it for 9 months so Im out $450. I recommend Amazon.com not carry the JVC DR-MV1S. In any case, I recommend strongly against buying the JVC DR-MV1S. I have had 2 and both failed to operate. On: 2005-04-07
I purchased this unit less than a week ago, based on the "quick pick" recommendation given by Consumer Reports. Wish Id checked the reviews here first.. Im already having the flashing "LOADING" problem that others have reported here at Amazon. Ill be returning the unit TODAY (while I still can!).. and I wont be replacing it with another JVC. Consider yourself warned!! On: 2005-03-14
Same problem as everyone else, after 3 months started flashing "Loading", at first once in a while then permanently. wont even go away when unplugged. JVC support non-exsting, their answer send it to a repair center at your expense not sure when well get to it. The product is defective, JVC should be embarassed. finally took it back to SEARS, they wont replace it, the unit is 4 months old, but they did have me take it to their repair center, where they are not sure it will be repaired because its out of the store warranty. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT IT"S PURE GARBAGE. I will never buy another JVC product. On: 2005-03-14
After about 3 weeks, tapes would get stuck half loaded. Took the first one back and it was exchanged for a new one. First tape I stuck in it got stuck. Took it back and got a Sony. On: 2005-03-09
YUP, its Junk! Mine to started having problems after the 90 day full warranty. I too get the flashing "LOADING" message.
However with mine, no matter how long you turn it off, it stays
broke. Same also if you leave it on. I called JVC, and they would not commit to fixing this without charges. I informed them this is a class problem. Still no commitments. On: 2005-03-07
I dont know much about electronics so I am extremely happy with this product. I know I needed to save all those precious memories I have on old VHS tapes so instead of paying A Lot of money to have a professional transfer them to dvd I needed to do it myself. I found it extremely easy to do and the price was definetly worth it. Granted there are many other features I havent even explored yet, but the main reason for my purchase was to transfer those tapes. The finalization was quick and easy and the playback was great. So in short I highly recommend this product. Good luck. On: 2005-03-04
Bought this unit for Christmas, and it started acting funny after the first week. Even with the power completely off, it would run a fan or something all night long. I thought the fan maybe was a back up fan running to cool the unit down, but after running for more than 3 hours, I had to unplug the unit to get it to stop. I had 5 tapes get stuck in the device. I had to turn off all of the power on the unit, and unplug it, then start all over to get my tape out. What a mess. Then, often the unit would flash "Loading" for about 5 minutes at a time....while I was waiting to play or record a DVD. I was putting up with all of these things for about a month, because I got it for a good price, and it had all of the features I pretty much wanted....but then I started to get picture problems. It started off with grains (little white flashes) and then progressed to static-like lines throughout the picture.....eventually the whole screen was pretty much white, and we returned it to Costco......they were really good about returning it after 3 months of use. Really dissapointing- I spent a lot of time on consumer web pages researching features of recorders only to buy a lemon...... On: 2005-02-28
I wish I wouldve read more reviews on this model before purchasing it back in November 2004. I returned the device 3 times to Crutchfield and all 3 did the same thing, the VHS tape sticks when trying to load it in. Thankfully Crutchfield has replaced it with a different model this 4th time with no cost to me. They have even paid for the return shipping each time.
Stay FAR away from this model. Way too many problems. On: 2005-02-23
I have several kinds of audio and video devices from several brands (from Sony or JVC to Marantz or Rotel) but this is the most unreliable of all them. The first problem was with VHS tapes that stuck before to enter completely on the unit, the second problem was that unit sometimes does not turn on or if is on does not turn off no matter how many times you push the button, the third problem was sometimes the display panel blinks and show the word "Loading" and the unit does not work. With all this problems is almost impossible to use the unit.
This product must be a shame for JVC that usually made reliable products... I wonder why JVC continues selling it knowing the several problems that the buyers have and the damage cause to their brand image.

I wish I would have seen reviews before I bought this item just after it was introduced. I have a unit that was manufactured in March of 2004. Less than a year later the power unit died. Coverage is one year on parts and only 90 days on labor...repair was $35 for the part and over $100 for labor. DO NOT BUY THIS UNIT AS IT APPEARS MANY OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED POOR RELIABILITY AS I HAVE. IF YOU DO BUY THE UNIT, BUY IT ONLY WITH EXTENDED WARRANTY. I never take the extended warranty coverage as I know it is a profit center for retailers, but this should have been an exception. Consumer Reports rates this unit highly, but they must not have the repair record on this specific unit. On: 2005-02-11
This thing is junk. It keeps flashing "loading" and wont work. Apparently, this is a common problem. Its even on their FAQ on their web site. Check it out for yourself.
I emailed JVC and they told me to send it in. I did.
2 weeks after they received it (based upon my fedex confirmation), I didnt hear from them so I called them. I had to call several times. They routinely click on the phone and hang up on you. I think its their way to improve their response time. Anyway, it didnt matter because they had no record of my package. They told me the service center is so backed up that they didnt even log my package yet.
The next week, I found out that they logged my box. Well, I asked them how long will it take to fix it. They didnt know, but it will a few more weeks.
This is terrible.

Well, it has happened. The unit came back from repair at JVC Aurora and I tried to dub from VHS to DVD and surprisingly it when through the whole transfer without going into the flashing "loading mode" as before but when the transfer was completed there was evidence of burning on the disc but nothing plays back. STILL DEFECTIVE!!!!! I called and talked with Lorenzo at New Jersey he checked with some else to verify the DVD should play back without being finalized and they and concurred the unit is malfunctioning. Lorenzo told me to call Jun at Aurora service, I did and left voice mail - TWO times with no returned call. I called Craig Peters voice mail (he has never answered or returned a call yet but what to heck no has ever answered one of these Emails either) and left message - no return call. I talked with the receptionist at Aurora, Angelica, and she offered to take a message, but still no call back. Please tell me what I need to do to get a unit that works, IT IS VERY APPARENT TO ME THAT REPAIR IS NOT THE ANSWER. Please help me and at least respond to my communications surely you cant think I am being unreasonable and just trying to blow me off especially after 3 CONTINOUS FAILURES. This unit has not worked since the first of December. Previous leters to JVC below:
The letter below was included with the unit a copy was in an envelope on the outside of the box and a copy taped directly to the unit. AS OF 1/26/05 9:00 pm there has been no response to it or the numerous messages I have left on Mr. Peters voice mail and Kelly Rahns voice mail. The unit is now waiting for parts and has been out of service a total of more than 45 days.
The unit first failed while dubbing VCR to DVD after about 30 minutes of transfer - the blue light bar was flashing and the display was flashing "loading" and the power and open/close buttons were non-responsive even after unplugging the unit. The open/close button did respond one time after leaving the unit unplugged overnight. This was the first time I had tried to use this feature! I would say the total use time of this unit has been less than 6 hours total (I have another DVD player). I sent this unit in for repair 12/15/04 after talking with Ralph on the 800 number 12/3/04 and waiting for his "authorization" letter to arrive (11 days later). I received the unit back from the service center 1/6/05. After getting the unit back from repair (invoice # FC187771, Receipt # C034889) I used it to watch one DVD on 1/8/05 and started a VCR to DVD dub on 1/9/05, about 45 minutes into the transfer the unit failed exactly as it did previously, only this time I have been unable to get the open/close button to respond even once to get the DVD out. I believe this unit has something inherently wrong with it and it should be replaced rather than repaired. I called the 800 number 1/10/05 and talked with 2 different people (Anthony and Raul) and they both said they could not make that decision and would have someone contact me - no one had called by 1/11/05 at 3:30pm so I called again and was able to get connected with Kelly (who Raul had said would call me). Kelly said she had tried to call but received no answer or recording - I am not aware of any problem with the phone or recorder at home or work. I asked Kelly to replace the unit instead of trying to repair it again. Kelly also said she was not authorized to make that decision and I asked her who was and Kelly said "Craig Peters, who is out of the office until Thursday". Kelly suggested I go ahead send in the unit ASAP and she would reimburse me for the UPS charges when she received a copy of the bill from me.
Mr. Peters, please send me a NEW DR-MV1S so I can use and enjoy the product. The only time I have to make use of the dubbing feature is during the winter months as I am too busy the rest of the year. I have already lost over a month in getting it repaired to only have it immediately fail again with the exact same problem. This has not been "The Perfect Experience" JVC was intending I am sure and you have the ability to make the best of what so far has been a Bad Experience. Hopefully, the HD-52z585 I purchased last week will be more dependable, so far I am very happy with it. I look forward to your quick and favorable response. Sincerely, Ken Martin
Again I am requesting the unit be immediately replaced, in the automotive business this unit would qualify as a LEMON! I must also say I have become very disappointed by the lack of communication of your service staff and the run-around tactics of your customer service personnel "you need to talk to XXXXX" and XXXXX says you need to talk to who I just talked to - and so on. When you boil it all down it appears Mr. Peters is the one to make the decision on whether to satisfy this customer and he has not even provided the courtesy of a returned phone call or a response to my letter. They say word of mouth advertising is the best and the people at JVC are working very hard at creating advertising that is negative for JVC instead of positive. The "Perfect Experience" is far far FAR from what I have endured.
Also here is a copy of my previous email to this site that promised a response within 5 days - I am still waiting.
"The following information has been sent to JVC Customer Service. First Name: Ken Last Name: Martin
I sent this unit in for repair 12/15/04 and received it back 1/6/05. The unit failed while dubbing VCR to DVD after about 30 minutes of transfer - the blue light was flashing and the display was flashing "loading" and the power and open/close buttons were non-responsive even after unplugging the unit. The open/close button did respond one time after leaving the unit unplugged overnight. This was the first time I had tried to use this feature! I would say the total use time of this unit has been less than 6 hours (I have another DVD player). After getting the unit back from repair I used it to watch one DVD on 1/8/05 and started a VCR to DVD dub on 1/9/05 about 45 minutes into the transfer the unit failed just as it did previously only this time I have been unable to get the open/close button to respond to get the DVD out. I believe this unit has something inherently wrong with it and it should be replaced rather than repaired. Thank you. A representative will contact you within five days."
Please do not make me wait any longer to have a DR-MV1S that I can depend on, send a new replacement now. On: 2005-01-25
4 months into use......while using ......the display panel blinks and show the word "Loading" and then turns off the power by itself. It can not record on even Fuji Disks. It will only record or read certain brands of disks. Also it is not easy to record VHS onto a DVD disk on this unit. On: 2005-01-19
7 mos into use(average 2 dvd`s a week),unit started to show white sands after 30 mins then totally washes out the picture after another 15 mins. called customer service , lady advices to ship unit to new jersey service center...sucks i have to pay shipping plus possibly labor, only parts are warranted for 1 year. my advice, get another model or brand. On: 2005-01-05
I received my DR-MV1S for Christmas. For starters it did not have the RF Cables or the Splitter. I recorded 3 DVDs from my DV Camera and it seemed to work OK. Last night I tried to dub a VHS video onto DVD. Like others, I could not get the machine initially to accept the tape. After powering on and off and manually fudging it, I was able to get the tape to work and dub on to DVD. However when I attempted to dub my next VHS, the unit kept powering off all by itself after flashing "Please Wait" on the TV screen. I again unplugged the unit, waited 15 seconds, and plugged it back in. Now the unit wont even play a VHS in VCR mode. The tape will load (occasionally still getting stuck), and indicate it is indeed playing but it never in fact does. It does play DVDs. One other note, my experience is that when I play recent movie titles on DVD in Progressive mode, the picture is actually worse than normal. I have component video cables and I know everything is hooked up correctly. Bottom line, a lot of nice features but quality is sorely lacking. I am dumping this for another brand/model as I dont want to wait around for the incessant "Loading" error that seems to plague these units from reading prior reviews. On: 2005-01-05
DR-MV1S - Very short review: Excellent features, hit some road blocks with copyrighted VHS tapes, but no problems yet. On disc programing is excellent...timer recordings can be stored on individual discs and then each dvd-rw is then dedicated to an individual set of programs when inserted into the machine. two words-TWIN TUNERS!!! One timer can be on while the other tuner is operating. I have used the hell out of it for about 2 months (at least 100 dubs/recordings), no jams, no failures...guess I got lucky so far....if you get one, just get a service plan with it for peace of mind...get ready to go back to school for studying the operation of the unit...but just like most things, once learned the unit works sweetly... On: 2004-12-31
I purchased this unit becaiuse it had all the features I was looking for in a DVD-VCR player recorder. I was able to hook it up with no problem and play DVDs right away. Then I tried to insert a VCR tape and the machine would not accept the tape. I have never had this problem with a VCR - you just put the tape in the door slot, it takes the tape, closes the door, and then plays. So thinking this was a new feature, I gently pushed the tape into the machine - it did not play and would not eject. I had to use a screwdiver and knife to remove the tape. I returned the machine. I thought about buying another one, but after checking the reviews on line, I have concluded not to buy this machine, or maybe not another JVC product at all. On: 2004-12-29
I could not get a VHS tape to go into the machine. I am going to try a second time but by the looks of the other reveiws, I am not expecting much! On: 2004-12-27
I am experiencing the same problems others have noted. I have used this unit for over 3 months (past the 90 days labor and parts warranty). I also get the "loading" message about 1 hour
after trying to transfer VHS to DVD. I will no longer buy JVC products. Now I know why JVC only gives 90 day coverage on labor(the most expensive part of a repair bill). I myself will no longer purchase JVC products. I will only purchase those products that give a 1 year parts and labor coverage. On: 2004-12-27
To begin with a positive, to this point in time I have had wonderful experiences with JVC products. I have a 27 inch JVC television that has worked flawlessly since 1994, a 13 inch JVC that has worked perfectly since 1997, and a 27 inch flat screen JVC that has been perfect for one year. And all have great quality pictures, and were purchased at very fair prices.
Now, to continue relevant to this products review, I just received the DR-MV1S for Christmas. I had little intuitive difficulty with the cabling set-up, even though the user manual buried information about connecting with a home theater system on page 72. I was disappointed to read Plug & Play for clock and tuner settings does not work with a digital cable box, but found the manual set-up process on page 21 quick and painless.
I immediately played a DVD with no difficulty, and high quality.
However, in testing the VCR in preparation for dubbing and recording operations, the very first tape inserted into the machine became stuck before completely entering the play mechanism. I havent had a video tape stick in a VCR since the 1980s. Through turning the machine on and off, hitting eject, and with finger adjustment, the tape did eventually come free. Bravely, I attempted to insert another tape. To my surprise, it entered with only minimal hesitation, and began to play with fine quality. However when I began rewinding the tape, the machine seemed to labor and "whine and grind," seeming to change speeds multiple times before "Its a Wonderful Life" was successfully returned to the beginning. Afer a successful ejection, I havent wanted to make a potential sacrifice of any other tape for further testing.
When I inserted a recordable DVD to test the TV record function, the machine presented a "disk error" message. I tried the disk formatting tips an earlier reviewer pointed out on Page 78 of the manual, with the same "disk error" message.
I agree with many of the previous reviewers regarding the strong need for detailed reference to the User Manual. If one must go to page 78 for initial use, and if indeed a page 78 even exists, the product is usually not very user friendly.
I suspect that if I worked at it, I could make this machine function at least adequately for my personal use. A concern however is that my other family members might hit "brick walls" in use without my troubleshooting presence. My greater concern is that on day one and two of use, I have already experienced the significant VCR difficulties other reviewers have mentioned.
Therefore, I will be exchanging the machine. Im currently researching the SONY RDRVX 500 which seems to be readily available for just over $450. I note another reviewers good experiences with a Toshiba model I will also check out.
Presuming Best Buy works well with me on the exchange, which I suspect they will, I will give JVC the benefit of the doubt on this one bad product experience. I will still consider JVC to be normally good providers of quality for the dollar spent. On: 2004-12-26
I received this item as a gift last month. Before I opened it, I came here to read the reviews. Although most people were unhappy, I figured Id try it out anyway, since there was an extended return policy in place for the holidays.
I wanted to record my precious VHS tapes to DVD but I needed to try it first on unimportant material. After a long time of trying to figure which button to use to program the unit, I successfully recorded a DVD. I did not get the "LOADING" message so many people described except for the first few seconds when it really was loading.
It looks really sharp with my big new wide-screen HDTV but the instructions are so complicated for every process and the warnings here prompted me to return it.
Im going to wait six months or so, until the technology is more advanced and less confusing and the price drops somewhat. On: 2004-12-21
I also received the " loading " led message and unit began non functioning after 3 months. It took a while to figure half the features out but I got it working and made approximately 50 dvds from dubbing or recording off a satellite hard disk. I called JVC customer support and they helped me get the unit going, but alas it is broken along with my multi-region JVC dvd unit as well.
Cannot recommend JVC..... On: 2004-12-18
This product is defective. It keeps flashing "Loading" everynow and then and becomes inoperable. I have not found any solution so far and the JVC customer support is mediocre at best. My unit was only 3 months old when this problem started. JVC makes poor quality products and do not buy them and they will not fix their problems. On: 2004-12-13
Best advice: Do not buy this piece of cr*p hunk oJUNK. It doesnt even deserve 1 star. Its the biggest waste of money ever. There are way too many problems with this machine to cite here, and JVC customer service is not helpful--the pits, as a matter of fact. I will NEVER buy another JVC product. On: 2004-12-13
I purchased this unit a couple of weeks ago. There are many valid points made in other reviews about the tapes sticking in the deck and the complexity and lack of accuracy in the users manual. However, the reason that I returned this unit was because of the poor quality of recording to the DVDs. The clarity was OK, the problem is with minor shaking of the image in record mode. It did this with all of the tapes I tried (most tapes were new or had been used only a couple of times.) Since the tapes did not exhibit this shaking during play mode, I attributed this to the recording function. JVC tech support tried to help but with no solution that worked.
I strongly advise that you stay away from this product. On: 2004-12-07
What a piece of junk. Im a computer tech, and Ive never seen something as anti-intuitive as this piece of cr*p. If I didnt know a lot about tech stuff, i wouldnt be able to program it. As it is, I have to read the manual EVERY time before I attempt to do something.
The problem with flashing "LOADING" continuously is real and more annoying than you can imagine. There is literally NOTHING you can do about it; you have to unplug the thing, and wait.
Ive tried to take it back to Best Buy, but they wont have it. Im seriously considering taking a hammer to it and buying a TiVo.
If you are looking for a DVD Recorder, I BEG you, save yourself the headache. Steer clear of this piece of garbage. On: 2004-11-09
What caught my eye about the JVC DR-MV1SL was that it boasted VHS playback in progressive mode! There are S-VHS VCR players that will playback an S-VHS tape in S-VHS mode (400 lines of resolution). But these VCRs will play regular VHS tapes like any ordinary VCR player, with just 230 lines of resolution. When you have an HDTV (mine is the 50" Samsung DLP HDTV), the lower resolution VHS tapes really start to look bad.
So, coming back to the DR-MV1SL, the specs say it can play a regular VHS tape in progessive mode, which is 480 lines progressively scanned (not interlaced, like S-VHS or regular VHS). This should account for a really good picture. And that was my primary reason for buying this DVD/VCR combo. Heres some very useful stuff I found out:
1) The unit does indeed play a VHS tape in 480 progressive mode. But the quality was not always much better. The picture was somewhat sharper, and more full of color. But I also started to notice a lot more jagged lines. In defense of this unit, theres really only so much you can do with a lower quality signal. This unit tries its best to upgrade that signal - but the end result was not so spectacular. A little better, but not much.
2) Limited use of dubbing VHS tapes due to copyright protection. You were probably aware that this unit would not dubb VHS tapes onto DVD if the tape had a copyright signal on it. But did you know that ALL Disney and Pixar tapes are copyright protected? My wife has almost a 100 of these Disney animation tapes and I thought Id pick our favorite ones to backup onto DVD. Surprise, surprise, not ONE could be copied. Even the old Disney tapes like Cinderella, Lion King, etc. - none of them could be copied.
3) But if youre lucky enough to find a tape that you can copy onto DVD, the results are very good. I managed to find 5 VHS movies that I could copy onto DVD (Mission Impossible, Jumanji, etc.). 4 of them came out perfect, just 1 of them had a 3 second skip in the middle of the movie. But that VHS tape was very old and poor quality.
4) Recording TV programs onto DVD is nice and easy. The resulting picture also looks quite nice, sometimes even better than the original TV broadcast signal.
5) The unit will only record on DVD -R, -RW and -RAM formats. It wont record on any of the +s (I tried a DVD +R and it didnt work). Also, the recording speed of the discs doesnt seem to matter (nothing is mentioned about disc speed in the manual). I tried a 4x and an 8x - no difference in terms of recording time and end quality. Also, the unit will playback almost ALL the formats (I tried a recorded DVD +R and it worked fine).
There were few more minor details (like the blue light, which can be totally dimmed, the remote which can get confusing since the buttons double up for the VCR and DVD - but this is probably true of all VCR/DVD combos and you eventually get used to it). But I figured the points I mentioned above were the most important and most useful (at least to me) and they were not really mentioned clearly anywhere else.
Summarizing: Picture quality is great with the DVD, VHS tapes look a little better using the progressive output. Copyright protection of tapes (like with Disney) make it impossible to backup tapes onto DVD.
Overall, I think this is a very nice unit with lot of packed features in it. However, I returned mine back to BestBuy primarily because I couldnt backup my Disney collection, because VHS playback was only a little better, and because the price I paid was a little too much (around 400). If this ever went on sale for less than $300, Id seriously consider buying it and keeping it.
UPDATE (11/17/04):
I still think this unit is very nice and Im sticking to my 4 star rating. However there were some things I forgot to mention before and some new information about OTHER products (from JVC) that I think would be useful to those shopping around.
1) I forgot to mention that NO AV cables come with this unit (No RCA cables, no S-Video cables). Only 3 (thats right, three) RF-cables and an RF splitter. At first I thought this was a mistake, but then I checked the manual and it confirms the same.
I thought that that was bad of JVC. This unit is noted for its progressive output - they should have at least included one component video cable!
2) JVC also has another new model out right now - the DR-MX1S which is basically this unit (DR-MV1S) + an 80GB hard drive. So essentially, its a 3 in 1 - sounds very nice. Depending on where you look, the MSRP of the DR-MX1S varies - the JVC website has the MSRP at $999, Amazon has it at $1099 and Ive seen some other websites that list it as high as $1299. Of course, MSRP doesnt matter that much as long as you can get a good price. Amazon currently has it listed for a fairly competitive price of $699. I suspect itll go lower in time.
I would love to try out the DR-MX1S since I think a hard drive is best for daily recordings of TV shows. But Im waiting for it to be available at my local store first.
3) JVC also has an OLDER model - the HR-XVC37U that supposedly does the SAME thing as this unit (the DR-MV1S) in that it can display VHS in progressive mode! Its also a DVD/VCR combo like this unit, but its also a lot less expensive since it does not have the capability of a DVD recorder. Amazon has it listed as the HRXVC37U, in case you want to search for it here.
So, there ARE other options. An older, less expensive JVC model (without DVD recording capability) or a newer, more expensive JVC model (with an added hard drive). Just thought some might find this information useful. Happy shopping! On: 2004-10-24
We purchased this JVC unit in early June from Crutchfield. The first problem was dubbing from video to dvd-the manual was wrong. We got help from JVC on the phone and worked that out. Then, about a month ago (past the short 90 day warranty) the unit would spontaneously start flashing "loading" at various times. We might be watching a video or dvd-it just starts flashing. We cant turn it off-the unit had to be unplugged and cleared before it stops. If it happens when set to timer record, it stops recording-so weve lost programs we wanted to record.
Crutchfield says its not their problem. JVC doesnt anwser emails and the customer service people just say mail it (at our expense) to the service center with a $50 check before theyll even look at it.
This is obviously a problem others are having but JVC wont deal with it. Ive lost all loyalty for JVC products-and Ive filed a complaint with the Wisconsin Consumer Protection Department.
Dont buy this unit-its buggy! On: 2004-10-23

Ok, so I bought this unit to have a combo unit that could playback and record vhs tapes and dvds. The dubbing stuff is a bonus but I dont use it.
First, in my testing, the DVD recording works great- you can write to almost any format and mastering into DVD format is simple and fast. I would argue that the DVD recording is better than the VHS. Supposedly you can also record DV from your camera. There is even a feature to record a DVD and watch and earlier part of what you are recording simultaneously.
The unit is a little difficult to figure out- you definitely need to read the manual before you try to do anything.
Now for the bad. After owning the unit for several months, it suddenly started stopping in the middle of dvd playback, loading, or recording, and started flashing "loading". It will eventually turn itself off, or you have to unplug the unit, plug it back in (it will still flash "loading" for a minute or so) and let it shut itelf off.
I havent tried to fix it yet but i have found the best solution so far is just turn the unit off completely and let it rest, and it will start working normally again (for awhile).
Anyhow the fact that it broke is what got it 3 stars instead of 5. If JVC helps fix it I might rate this a 4, otherwise a 0! We will see...

This unit has many great features. The problem is that there are way too many problems with the VCR. First unit, a VCR tape got stuck within one month. Took unit to dealer. Unit was repaired. Within 2 weeks another VCR tape got stuck. Dealer replace the unit with a new one. Within one month a VCR tape got stuck. I was told by the dealer, that 3 other people had similar problems with their units. Appears that this is way to common.

Although technically impressive, the DR-MV1s that Ive had all suffered from VHS tape drive problems--resulting in tapes getting stuck during the loading process. Ive had this happen several times and exchanged the problematic unit for a new one--then it happened again. Im on my 3rd unit and the same problem just happened. Im going to return it and buy and different brand. I called JVC and they told me that "no problems have been reported with thousands of units sold so far", but checking the Amazon review shows that this model has several problems. On: 2004-08-20
Ive owned the JVC DRMV1S for about a month. Even at SP (2-hour mode), the results are indistinguishable from the source material (recorded from DirecTV SAT receiver). I have already created about 15 DVD-Rs to archive TV shows that Im interested in saving from VHS. I have also created 3 DVD-Rs from my Sony TRV-315 digital camcorder.
Overall, I would give JVC an "A" for this unit. Results are of very good quality.
On: 2004-08-20
The JVC DRMV1S includes a HiFi Stereo VHS VCR and a DVD Recorder, both sides have their own tuner so that you can record two different television shows at the same time. It was very easy to transfer my old VHS tapes to DVD and one of the coolest things is that this unit has a single progressive component output for both the VCR and DVD...no more switching inputs,on my TV,back and forth, which always leads to family confusion.
Highlights:
Dubs VHS to DVD and vice versa
Excellent progressive DVD Player
Very responsive VCR transport
Of course, Im nowhere near finished dubbing my prized VHS collection to DVD, but Ive made a good dent in the project. Im very happy that JVC has introduced this product, which not only makes tape-to-DVD copies and records broadcast TV, but it also provides a top-notch VCR and progressive DVD player in the bargain. Im sold!

In the past week I have purchased and returned five JVC DR-MV1SL recorders. All but 1 functioned properly in the record mode from VHS to DVD, and produced at least one good copy before failing. They began to turn themselves off after less than two minutes of recording, ruining the DVD media, and of course failing to provide the copy. All VHS tapes were of original material. Was this product rushed to market with quality control problems, or was I just unlucky enough to encounter five defective machines in a row? What are those odds? I have given up, and will purchase a stand-alone DVD recorder by another manufacturer. On: 2004-08-04
