I use this amplified speaker system to listen to my big-screen HDTV which itself came with fairly poor speakers. It is fully capable of decoding 5.1 surround sound and has a variery of inputs including coaxial audio and optical audio, so you can run not only your TV, but your DVD player and MP3 player through it as well, as I do. I also have output to a subwoofer, which dramatically improves the movie viewing experience. You wont believe what a difference it will make.
The sound is clear and powerful, with some distortion at higher volumes. Certainly it is much better than any TV speakers and for those looking for an economical improvement on their TV sound it is ideal.
As a means of providing surround sound, forget it. The only way to have surround sound is to surroung yourself with speakers. Getting surround sound out of one speaker set in front of you is like trying to lose weight without diet or exercise--it aint gonna happen.
The engineering and quality of this device is significantly above average. The remote is ergonomic and simple. You can tell that someone that cares about design built this thing.
I think this is perfect for someone with a nice TV who enjoys watching DVD movies but wants a better sound experience than what they get with their built-in speakers, but doesnt want the hassle of a full-fledged 5.1 surround sound set-up. Also ideal for flat screen TVs without speakers or with small speakers.
Many people fail to realize that sound is 50% of the experience of a movie. Upgrading your sound with this device and an inexpensive subwoofer will change your viewing experience in a huge way.
So just have realistic expectations and you will be very pleased with the improvement in your movie-watching experience with minimal investment, at least compared to spending $1k on a real surround sound system.
