I received a Go Video DVD-R as a present and find it very easy to use- and considering who it is from probably reasonably priced. I use it primarily for dvd viewing and for recording shows.
Set up was simple and they do give you a toll free number to call and will talk you through your first recording (and include a blank dvd) but I found I didnt need it. Menus are user friendly and self-explanatory. I found it easy to set up my own chapters on recorded discs (provided they are dvd-rw) and add titles. You can easily hide sections of the tape (like commercials). Cons are that it is very picky about the discs it will record on- some brands just wont work and other brands if you use the timed recording (and the machine automatically shuts off) then the recording is gone. I just simply buy Maxwell DVDR+ since those are constantly on sale at Best Buy. Ive used recorded movies in other dvd players and theyve worked in all players and computers except one player- but Im not sure if that was a fault with the disc or not. Also, sometimes the picture coming from the tv will be slightly off- as if it is missing every 5th frame- you cant watch television off it directly all the time but it always records fine.
I have no idea how it works on recordings off of camcorders. I would suggest this dvd-r does a good job at a reasonable price. However, if you are looking for preserving memories you probably want to buy a higher quality. On: 2006-03-20
I purchased this recorder and was pleased with it until it froze while I was recording. The only way to unfreeze it was to unplug the unit. When you do this, you lose everything you previously recorded. I returned the unit and got a replacement (refurbished unit I found out later). After a week, the same thing happened again. I returned and received 2 more units. The last unit I asked for a brand new one, but who knows if it really was. Even this one did the same thing. I cant tell you how much material I have permanently lost because of this recorder. Stay away from this unit and anything else GoVideo puts out there or youll be sorry. One more thing if you do buy this unit, make sure you return it within 30 days of purchasing when you have problems, and you will have them. If after 30 days, GoVideo will make you pay $79 for a replacement and its a refurbished machine. On: 2006-02-16
I bought a unit from GO Video and experienced horrors with their customer service as mentioned in other reviews.
My unit came without any of the accessories and after 6 weeks of talking to more than a half dozen people (with more runaround than you can even begin to imagine) at go video, I still have a unit that will not work.
avoid this manufacturer!! On: 2006-02-15
First of all, I have the GoVideo Dual Deck VCR player which I got about 5 years ago and that works excelently, so when it came time to upgrade my DVD player, I thought...
"why not GoVideo"?
I"ll tell you why not...
Their DVD player/recorder is a piece of CRAP. Lets start with that.
I wanted a DVD player that could also record.
While this one did just that, it seemed to have a mind of its own.
Id only owned the damned thing for 2 months when it started acting up.
e.g. When you insert a DVD disc, what do you expect?
For the TV screen to show the DVD main menu, right?
And when it is on the main menu, and the "PLAY" option is highlighted, meaning, if you press "play" or "OK" on the remote it should play the movie, right?
WRONG!
If you press "OK", it doesnt work.
what happens, a blue blank screen appears on the TV screen.
You have to press "play" only, apparently.
And that was only after a couple months.
And now its been 9 months and my DVD player/recorder - which by the way, cost me about $170 - is not working.
No "main menu", NOTHING!
Hell, my homie has a regular $45 DVD player that hes had longer than me (and not from GoVideo) and the darn thing is still working!
As far as Im concerned, this is the last product Ill ever buy from GoVideo!!!!
I wish there was a less than 1 rating! On: 2005-11-21
It is true that the unit is inexpensive but the quality of the recording is so poor you may miss your VHS tapes. Also scheduled recording is not working (better buy a tivo and transfer the recordings to your PC and then burn them to DVD form the PC)
The remote is very poor, both in design and efficiency. Cluttered buttons and you really have to be very close to the main unit for the remote to work.
Also the unit doesnt work with most of the DVD brands on the market, you may see what brands are compatible on their website.
The bottomline is,
D O N O T S P E N D M O N E Y O N T H I S U N I T...

Although I purchased a different unit, the GoVideo 8440 Portable DVD Player, it played exactly 6 movies before dying. GoVideo replaced it with a refurbished model, which arrived in non-working condition. I received a THIRD replacement unit (new)from GoVideo, which failed within minutes out of the box. Please note that I have since discovered that GoVideo Inc. is NOT a member of the Better Business Bureau of Central/Northern Arizona and has MULTIPLE complaints against the company. Purchase at your own risk!! On: 2005-01-08
My first DVD recorder was a CyberHome CH-DVR 1500 Progressive-Scan DVD+R/+RW Recorder. I was happy with it overall, the quality was great at even 3 hours, though it couldnt delete chapters & the menu could have been better. But after 2 weeks, it seized up during a recording.
I tried Go Video the DVD+RW it came with (TDK) & Fijifilm DVD+RWs. I used it to copy VHS. The recording was horribly pixilated 30% in corners or even the whole screen & there was many times the sound went out with horrible squeaking using even SP speed. I tried recording off DishNetwork satellite w/S-Video & it came out fine using SP. I tried the 3rd time using EP & on playback it would not play at all. No matter what I tried. And I thought Cyberhome was unreliable! On: 2004-10-23
The recorder requires a bit of initial effort and possibly help to use, but once you figure it out, it seems to work well. There are 5 levels of quality with this recorder - the one hour is fine, the 2 and 3 1/2 hour quite good and the others fair. This does not replicate the quality of an original dvd but I have been happy with it.
My only complaint is the poor range of the remote control. The manufacturers customer service tells me that this is a common situation with this machine. On: 2004-10-22

This unit has all the features that one would expect for a VCR replacment and doesnt seem to have any critical design flaw that the other cheap recorders have had.
Pros
fan, good 4hr picture quality, stereo tuner, small, firewire, quick tuner response.
Cons
no battery backup clock, hard to set timers, no DD2.0 encoder, no Commercial advance.

After figuring out how to configure the cables for my system (Audio Receiver & Satellite Receiver, no cable or over air tv) everything works fine. I used the standard video/audio inputs for recording due to lack of additional S-Video/Digital Audio outputs from Sat Receiver. Recordings look and sound good to me.
Keep User Manual handy for configuring Setup Menu. On: 2004-07-21
The price is right, and controls and onscreen menus are thoughtfully designed. But I found two decisive negatives with this machine: 1. The images reproduced from camcorder digital video tape (home movies) using the "firewire" connection are lousy; very "hot", not at all clear and not at all comparable to the original tapes. 2. The machine is very touchy about what discs it will record on; it rejects many different discs of many different brands, and is not always consistent within a brand. You can find discs that will be accepted, but its work. Ive ended up using this solely as a DVD player, and for that use alone its overpriced.
