I bought this 2 years ago as I needed a replacement for my 10 year old Mitsubishi VCR that decided it was no longer going to work. I had the money and since the VCR/DVD combo was only 100 dollars I thought the idea of a combo would be neat. I really didnt need a dvd player as my PS2 as well as my computer did DVDs. I could also just hook my computer up to the VCR using the S-video plug on the back of the Video card but thats all beside the point. Anyway, I bought this because I needed something new and since it was cheap I thought it was a good deal. I was wrong. It lasted me for about 2 years without a problem. If you can believe it when one thing acts up another has to act up with it. What I mean is the first problem I noticed is how when I would eject tapes it wouldnt eject properly. It would still slightly hold on to the tape reel and if you didnt notice and pulled it out without caution the tape would get damaged. Not a huge huge problem because that is fixable. What really bugs me is how the DVD player had to act up as well. Any DVD that I put in my DVD player, at random times while watching, will freeze up and you will see the numbers on the display jump around. After about a min of freezing it will begin playing again 20 seconds ahead of where it last was. The DVD player will continue to this throughout the DVD at random times. Its pretty annoying. Other than that I have yet to notice anything new. The VCR is only a minor problem but the DVD player is a big problem as I do not know how to fix that. I have a feeling the DVD player broke because of how hot that thing got when disks were in there. It would just spin so fast and get so hot even when nothing was playing and the disk was just sitting in there. Well, at least it gave me two years of use and the VCR still records fine which is all I really need it for. The DVD player issue is just annoying. If I were you I would steer clear of anything cheap like this and go for a much more trusted brand such as Panasonic, Mitsubishi, or Sony. They just have a much longer lifespan and are a much better investment. On: 2005-12-12
I got this unit at Target after my old DVD player conked out. I was just looking for a replacement DVD player, and then this unit caught my eye. My VCR was also getting old, and I thought it would be a good idea to replace both in one shot. After all, it would be cheaper than getting seperate units, and there would be way less wiring involved, one less remote, etc.
Well, the VCR worked great, and I was pleasantly surprised at the sound quality (I have a pretty good sound system). However, the DVD section had a distinct high pitched whining noise that came through my speakers, like a motor running, which was noticeable even at moderate volume levels when playing DVDs. No good! I picked up a good DVD player and set the Daewoo aside. I never got around to returning it, and ended up giving it to a friend who needed a VCR and only played DVDs through her TV sets small speakers. Everybody is happy now, right? Wrong! One week later, DVDs started to freeze, at first for a split second, then longer and longer until they are now unwatchable. What a dud this thing is! On: 2005-10-07
I purchased this vcr/dvd 6 months ago and the vcr no longer works. Any button I push on the console or the remote activates rewind. There are no service centers in Washington State - although it is sold by Costco. Labor is not covered after 3 months. I certainly would not recommend the product - but even more than that, I would not recommend the company. They do not stand behind their products. On: 2005-09-29
I had previously sold my old Zenith Allegro VCR for $30 because it was time for an upgrade- the ol Allegro had mono audio!! So I got this at Target on Clearance for $72. I hooked it up to component video (which I recommend for any television that will accept the red, green, and blue rca cables for video; best picture possible!) and the DVD looked pretty good, not as good as my Panasonic DVD player bought in fall 2001 which is still running perfectly! But as I was watching Season One of Scrubs, I rewind it quite frequently because Dr. Cox and the Janitor are freakin hilarious, the DVD starts freezing and then going to a spot a minute later, freezing, then going to a spot a minute later, etc. Not cool, breeze. I also noticed the audio is a 1/4 to 1/2 second late when playing DVD, also not cool. VCR works phenomenally, recorded my favorite shows without a problem. Easy menu and timer program setup with a bright colorful picture. The remote gets a little tricky in the dark while watching a movie- small buttons. If it was just a VCR which I was looking for first priority, Id go ahead and praise this Daewoo puppy with the big 5 stars. But the DVD portion just wasnt up to my Panasonic expectations. It went back to Target and now i have a Panasonic V4523S VCR which impresses me yet again. I love you guys, Panasonic. On: 2005-09-17
I bought this back in FEB (7 months ago) and liked it since it was a spacesaver/combo. I mostly used it for the DVD player since I have been burning my own, but do believe that it is a good VCR also. It has worked great until recently when it started having a problem reading the DVDs. It starts reading a DVD normally but within a minute starts to hesitate and after about another minute jumps to a new area a minute or so further into the DVD. I can rewind back to almost the point where it jumped, to see what was missed but this happens somewhat frequently and is not a solution. I cleaned the DVD player but this didnt change anything. I havent had much cooperation from Daewoo support either... even though I only had 3 months labor on the combo there is a 1 year warrentee on parts, and after speaking to someone about this I understand that Daewoo will replace the unit if they cant fix it. Only problem is I have been unable to speak with a tech except for the 1st call - Ive called back 3 times to the support center and they say someone will call me within 48 hours... but dont. Good luck. by: Anonymous On: 2005-08-23
The other reviews are right, this thing is a lemon. Right out of the box the audio did not sync with the picture, both on VHS and DVD. It would fall behind, then run ahead, then behind, etc. VHS picture had incredibly dull and fuzzy picture (guess 6 heads ARENT better than 4), and I noticed the DVD playback was stuttering a bit too. Probably the worst electronics purchase Ive ever made...so its going back. Daewoo makes great standalone players but avoid this heap of scrap metal. On: 2005-08-22
I bought this because I wanted the convenience of a combo unit and because I also have a Daewoo TV. It worked great for the first 5 or 6 months and then, suddenly, stopped playing DVDs. It sounds like a common problem with this unit. I wont buy Daewoo brand products again. On: 2005-07-03
The unit I purchased played DVDs with great quality. The recording and playback of VHS tapes, however, was about the worst of any VCR I have used in 23 years of video taping. The recordings (even at SP) have a great deal of noise and even streaking. This unit makes tapes recorded on other machines unwatchable. Just to make sure it was not bad tapes, I played the tapes back on several other machines (none of which are the recorders used to record the tapes), and they looked great. The Daewoo makes them look like they were recorded with bad reception or something.
I am sending this machine back right away. A similar-quality DVD player is half the price of this thing. On: 2005-03-11
UPDATE 2: I replaced my unit under warranty. The VCR picture quality is now excellent. It is as good as any VCR I own. Also, the tape counter now works ok. On the first unit I got, the VCR picture quality was poor.
UPDATE 1: MY UNIT HAS DEVELOPED AN ANNOYING QUIRK.
When playing a tape recorded in SLP speed, the VCR will sometimes play it at the SP mode. It is dependent on where in the tape you start playback. If you rewind the tape, you can find a spot where it plays OK, and then scan forward. This is on old tapes that I have used many times.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
For a lower end unit, this is a good deal, with nice features for the price. However, it does not have all the great features of a higher priced unit.
I really like the DVD player on this unit. It works much better than any of my other DVD players (maybe because it is newer). It recognizes the DVD almost immediately. Jumping to different features on the DVD (like the menu, or different scenes) is very quick and without any glitches.
I bought this DVD unit because it plays VCD. It is one of the few remaining DVDs that play VCDs (an old Asian format). It also plays CDRs. I havent tried the various DVD recordable formats yet. I will report when I do.
The remote control works very well. The system has a very quick response to the remote control. I have had other units, like Panasonic, where the remote control is not so reliable. It has some nice features, like a 30 second commercial skip, and all the usual ones, like flipping to the last channel viewed.
The menus are fairly easy to navigate. Programming the timer recorder is a good and easy as I have seen on any unit. It is certainly easier than on the Go, Pansonic or Zenith models.
The VCR works fine, and has a good mechanism. The picture quality is not that great when recording SLP mode. Playback of tapes recorded in the SLP (sometimes called EP) other players do not look as good when played on the Daewoo. I havent tried the higher quality setting yet. The scan, and slow motion modes work well, although there isnt a choice in speeds.
The DVD portion has composite video out or S-video outputs. Like all DVD/VCR combos I have seen, the composite video only works with the DVD and does not work with the VCR. If you have a TV with composite video inputs, you hook up the DVD portion to that, and then you hook up the VCR to a different input on your TV. On the TV, you can watch the DVD player from either the composite inputs or the VCR inputs. The S-Video also only works on the DVD player. With many other DVD/VCR combos, the S-Video will also work for the VCR/tuner (especially those VCRs that can play SVHS tapes). I dont know why they cant convert the signal so that everything could go through the composite inputs.
Being a cheap model, here are the features that arent as good as a more expensive model:
-When you turn it on, it always goes to DVD mode first. I use the TV monitor and VCR more often, so this is a minor inconvenience. It does change modes very quickly.
-The remote control is not universal, so you cant use it to control your TV.
-I could use more audio output jacks, so I could hook it up to both my stereo and my TV, without having to use splitters.
-Will not play SVHS tapes (I actually havent tried one, so I dont know for sure).
-The display on the unit is very limited. When playing a VCR tape, it only shows "PLAY", and not the time or any other info.
Note, I did a lot of researching on Amazon for DVD/VCR combinations. None of them got good reviews from the readers. They all seemed to have reliability problems. Why is that? It may be that DVD/VCR combinations are so new that they arent reliable yet, or only the people who have problems with them bother to write reviews.
In many reviews of different VCRs I see people complaining that you cant record in LP mode. LP is the medium quality setting where you get 4 hours on a tape. LP mode is no longer a popular option and is almost nonexistant these days. The improvements of the SLP or EP mode (6 hours per tape)have made the LP mode obsolete.

I purchased this exact same DVD/VCR combo at Target recently for $84.99 plus tax On: 2005-01-06
i purchased this product about a year ago and have found it to very good. it responds quickly and provides great clarity. The VCR is a six head vcr and it shows like i had expected, great. Overall, very nice product and would purchase a daewoo product again. On: 2004-12-30
let alone the price. This is actually the second one Ive had as the first stopped working within thirty days. I assumed it was a fluke and like a fool exchanged it for a new one instead of getting my money back. Within six months this one has stopped reading discs. The VCR is still working at the moment but if all I wanted was a VCR I couldve bought one for half the price of this unit. On: 2004-11-17
Brand new unit, but the VCR player would not rewind. Too bad too, because the VCR plays fine, as does the DVD player...nice picture and sound, and it plays DVD+Rs, VCDs, etc. as advertised on Amazon. The unit looks nice enough too, though a little large. It has a solid feeling construction...made of metal and not plastic like many of the new low-end models. Regardless of what works, without the VCR being able to rewind, its certainly not proving its reliablity. I guess I am glad it showed itself right away. Am going to return and buy a better quality unit for about $50 more. On: 2004-11-16

This dvd player stopped reading discs about four months after I bought it. It will only read a disc about once every 30 tries now and has started eating dvds. Not only does the laser fail to read the discs now, but the belt is also broken and the dvd fell off the tray and was damaged. And the other annoying part is that the VCR still works fine, so it seems a waste to scrap it altogether. Youre better off having a separate dvd player, and certainly not a "daewoo" one. It may seem like a bargain, but believe me, its not.
