Ive owned this unit about 6 months, it worked fine until I left the battery uncharged. Unit is now completely dead, cant find a service center. Cant find a direct replacement battery pack. I dont want an auxillary battery pack hanging off the main unit. Dont buy Audiovox products, their service is non-existent. On: 2008-05-14
Ok, so, I received this portable dvd player for free, so obviously, I cant complain about the price. When I first used this unit, I loved it. The battery lasted almost 4 hours, the picture was great. The only downside was the tinny sound of the speakers. A pair of good headsets solved that problem.
Then the problem started. I used this only three times, and now, the battery will not hold a charge. It works maybe 4-5 MINUTES before the battery shuts down.
I have contacted the company, and they offered a new battery for 40 dollars. I was considering buying one, thinking maybe it was just my battery that was defective. Then I talked to others who bought this same DVD player. They ALL had the same problem. I will not waste 40 dollars on a new battery.
The DVD player still works fine if plugged in to a AC outlet. But, what is the point of having a portable player, if you need to plug it in. On: 2008-05-06
Initially I thought I was getting a nice unit. I took it on a trip (first time using it) and found the battery was dead after charging all night. It played using the ac/dc plug a few times. Now, the battery wont charge AND it will not even turn on while plugged in to the ac/dc plug. I was going to buy a battery until I found out the battery cost more than the unit itself. Go figure! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! On: 2008-04-03
This is a good Portable DVD player. I bought this while I was in Basic training in 2003 (after I got out of basic) used it alot, and I was deployed in 2006. I took it with me to Iraq, and used it all the time. I never had a problem with it, It still works, so I had mine for 5 years, and
it still works as if I had just bought it. I will say that my battery died on me and its no longer good. But, after 5 years of use, cant really blame it. The DVD Player still works great on the AC Plug, and I am just getting another battery. Thats how I found this. This is the same model that I have, and its a great little dvd player. On: 2007-12-18
I have had mine for well over a year. Purchased for my 8 and 4 year old who have used it HEAVILY. We do a lot of traveling. Battery has been charged and charged and re-charged. I was online looking for another to stop the fighting over and because I was so pleased with its functions of car, house, and battery use. Id recommend it. On: 2007-09-21
Bought this with 2 screens and after 3 uses and a few days after the warranty ran out (only 3 mos) one screen went dark orange on main unit. They want $90 plus shipping to fix it at Audiovox who was no help at all. Try reaching them for assistance (impossible.) I would avoid this product. . We paid almost $200 new with the 2 screens and all the accessories.
The pros about this product is it makes a good door stop
The cons about this product is it makes a good door stop
Save yourself some time and effort and just flush your money down the toilet On: 2007-09-10
This worked great for a few months but then the laser lens broke. Pretty useless now! by: Anonymous On: 2007-08-06
i purchased this dvd player for a trip with my kids to hawaii - they used it on the plane to hawaii and that was it - just after a year i got it out of the cupboard to take on another trip and it was broken - it would not play the dvd - i called audiovox and they wanted over $90 to fix it - what a joke - i barely paid $120 for it - i would never buy another audiovox electronic again - what a waste of money On: 2007-07-07
I bought not one, not two, but THREE of these (Model D1708). All THREE died within in about 20 hours of actual dvd-watching time. And just try to find the company (Audiovox) to repair it. No way. Ive looked online forever to find somewhere I can send these 3 duds to no avail. Dont buy this product. Pay a bit extra and get one that will last a while. On: 2007-07-06

Was acceptable player for the money until battery suddenly failed - completely refused to charge, rendering player useless. Replacement batteries are more expensive than a new unit. Even if cheap, the Audiovox DVD player is not very portable and not worth your money. We used the player gently and only a few times over the course of 18 months before the sudden failure. My mom bought this particular portable player for my son because we were going to be on some long flights and she thought hed handle it better if he could watch a few dvds. The picture and audio quality arent that great, but not bad for the price. The only problem is that we can NOT get the rechargeable battery to charge. Therefore, it is useless for the purpose it was bought for. It still places if plugged into an electrical outlet, but there is no way to take it on the plane. I have not been able to find a replacement battery, but am assuming it might be less expensive to buy a whole new dvd player. On: 2007-03-27

Bought one of these at Sears and was initially happy with it. But after a couple weeks of light use, the battery refused to charge. So I exchanged it at the store for a new unit. Used that one, again gently and according to the manual, for about a week--then it ceased working altogether. The player wouldnt turn on, whether on battery or mains power. Audiovox clearly has either design or quality control problems with this model. I suggest selecting a different model, and perhaps a different brand. On: 2007-01-16
The portable DVD player has turned out to be a great purchase and gift! It arrived on time and there were no problems. I have continued to compare prices in local department stores and nothing beats it. Thank you so much!!!! On: 2006-12-28
Well, have we not leaned yet that you get what you pay for. For low cost items which are manufacutred in China or other low cost countires, the qualify control is very poor, may be one of thousands of parts are checked and inspected. Others are just sent. Our great USA companies, particulary, internet companies like Amazon buys them for cheaper price, so that what you can expect. Ok,if you get lucky. May be to buy extended 3 years warranty for products like this could help. On: 2006-11-30
I initially bought this because it had a 5 star rating at the time (though few had rated it). It worked great for a short while, then it broke after 4 months of use. This is shameful because we probably only used it for about 15 hours of portable viewing. We took very good care of it and the screen simply went out while we were watching it.
We still use the DVD player in our bedroom, but the portable aspect is totally gone. The screen is no longer functioning.
Dont buy this. There are hopefully better ones out there. We just placed an order on a new one. Lets hope we have better luck.

I have had to replace my Audiovox DVD Player twice! The first time was because the sensor was not reading the DVD; the second was because the rechargeable battery would not charge. And, now Audiovox is telling me that to buy a new battery will cost $79.00 plus shipping and handling. This cost is 3/4 the cost I paid for the 2nd audiovox. And, of course, they (Audiovox) will not offer any discount or compensation for their "sad" product. And, the sound/volume is horrible with earphones! Sometimes its worth to pay for a quality name brand product, that has value! On: 2006-11-08

We purchased our DVD player in June 2005 from HH Gregg for $140. By December the screen would sometimes turn white so that we couldnt see the picture. Within a few months the screen stayed white all of the time, so that now we cannot play dvds at all. Audiovox wants $94 to fix it. Im sure thats the cost of replacing it. The sound quality was never great, but we endured it. What a complete waste of money and theres no way Im sending Audiovox another $100 for this or any other product. On: 2006-01-17
I bought this player well over a year ago. I have not had one problem with the player itself. The picture is great and the sound is good. The battery never lasted very long though. It developed "memory" and wont last more than 10 minutes. I may invest in another batter and try it again, but am just as happy using the car adapter to play it. Its a lot lighter that way! On: 2005-11-28
A good portable player, one that has held up well to a lot of use and abuse. The biggest flaw is the battery pack design... you cant use the device while the battery charging. I hope Audiovox fixed this in later models. On: 2005-10-26
Ive had it for almost a year now and I havent had any problems whatsoever. Sound and picture quality is great! Controls are really easy to use and remote sure comes in handy. On: 2005-08-11
I bought this when my "Durabrand" dual-screen DVD player died after only 8 or 10 uses in the car. I was very impressed with the screen when I compared it head to head with the Panasonic (and the Panasonic was more than double the $$) and the screen was worlds better than the Durabrand. The screen has great resolution (not top of the line, but nearly so, and probably better than all others for the same price). Even more important for a portable, it has excellent field of view; you can see it clearly almost completely to either side or the top (much better than my laptop computer). The brightness control gives crisp screen colors and the contrast is nice. The volume is high enough to hear over road noise or across the room. I copy my movies onto DVD+ and DVD- discs so the kids dont ruin the DVDs, and the player plays them just fine (unlike the Durabrand). It has logically placed, crisp control buttons and the remote works well.
I use it in the car for the kids so it has taken some abuse and keeps on ticking without a hitch. It has rounded corners and a solid feel, though not too heavy (unlike that piece of junk Durabrand). The battery is rather big; I havent tested it to see how many total hours it will run on one charge, though it seems to do well. The battery is flat and fastens on underneath the player and gives it stability if you use it. The only thing I dont like about the battery arrangement is that you cant charge the battery and use the player at the same time (the DVD player is cut out if you plug the power into the battery charge spot). There are DVD out and AV in connections. It works well with one as a slave viewer if you have two and both kids want to watch the same movie with their own screen. The carry case is nice, and you can actually fit the player and the accessories back into it (again, unlike the Durabrand). I have had no problems with it producing noise like some have reported here.
I thought it was a good value at what Amazon sells it for, which is what I paid for my first one, so I went out to buy a second one and it was a steal because it was on sale for even less. The second one works as well as the first, and at that price, its almost a throw-away item. If it conks out after 6 months, Ive got my moneys worth.
Addendum: A day after I wrote this review, one of my DVD players had a problem. In the middle of the movie, the screen turned to black and white, and I cant get it back to color. I didnt get my 6 months out of it, so dont consider it as much of a value as originally thought. I would reduce the number of rating stars if I could.
Addendum 2: I wish I would have written this review just a few days later. Since I added the last addendum a day ago, the other DVD player has developed a problem. All the buttons quit working. Luckily the remote still works. Unfortunately we are on a trip right now or they would both be taken right back to the store.
Sidenote: Why is it that so many DVD players, all brands, brake so soon? Its an epidemic! Must be because so many are made in China. We should all stop buying anything made in China! On: 2005-07-30
We bought this for our 3 year old daughter to watch videos in the car and on airplanes. It has been a life saver. It has survived drops, kicks, and tantrums and still works great. The battery life and picture are good. Of course there are a lot better out there, but if you are looking for something for the kids and do not want to spend too much money this is it. I suggest getting the car pack as well.

I bought this unit at a warehouse store. We have it strung up in the minivan for the kids to watch. We too get the no disc message, but thats when we leave it in the van overnight in very cold weather (less than 45 degrees). So, we pull it out everynight and pop it back in every morning. It does what we need it to do. If it breaks well buy something a little tougher to handle the temp extremes. Otherwise, it is 5 months in and still functioning. On: 2004-12-30
I like the picture that the 1708 produces, but when playing dvd-r and +rs and +rws the disc skip no matter what brand I use,and there is a motor noise when playing disc that can be heard on the right channel when using headphones.Im sending it to audiovox for repairs. It seems to skip or strobe every 10 to 20 seconds so this could bs a firmware problem. The only workaround with the audio problem is to use the audio out in the back of the player you wont hear the motor noise, but the volume level is fixed, so you would need an headphone volume controller to adjust it, which can be bought. On: 2004-12-30
I bought this DVD player and after 3 months (used it 2 times) the battery wont take a charge. I called customer service and they said it would cost $100 just to look at the unit. I refuse to pay $100 just to have the unit looked at. I will cut my losses and but a better brand. STAY AWAY FROM AUDIOVOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On: 2004-09-08
My son won this at school through a magazine sales promotion. We hooked it up that afternoon and verified that it worked. The next morning, the drive failed to spin. Audiovox wont respond to any request for help - at least, not without a store receipt. Fortunately, we didnt lose any money, but what good can come from giving a child something that does not work? by: Anonymous On: 2004-09-03
first off, this is pretty nice except for the noise mine made.the picture is nice,so is the sound, but mine made like a constant chirping noise.and the next day i took mine back.i heard reviews that says it runs really quiet,THATS NOT TRUE!well im 12 years old and now i have a magnavox mpd720,it works and runs great, thanks magnavox!if your looking for one,get the magnavox mpd720!
p.s.the reason im rating the audiovox d1708 2 stars instead of 1,is because the picture and sound is good, other than that,CRAP!! On: 2004-09-02

I am writing this review in hopes that you will listen to my warning and not buy this player. I wish I had listened to the reviews on other websites that gave the same warning. I bought this 6 months ago for my daughters birthday. Most of its use was in the house, hooked up to an extra television. I must admit that when it worked there was no problem with picture quality or sound etc. I now get a message that says "no disk". I now noticed the box does not mention the 90 day warranty, you have to read that after you buy it. I guess after I read the warnings I thought those things only happened to other people, I was wrong. You have been warned. On: 2004-08-27

Great dvd player I got it for my 11th birthday. It is very nice has tons of features and has a 7 inch screen. LCD is very clear at an affordable price. Would buy for double what I payed! Alot better than the Poloried for a certain price and the guy at Best Buy said that he did not reccomend it. I love this player!!
