Don't buy anything from GoVideo!     On: 2007-01-04

I bought this exact DVD recorder from QVC for $[...]. It was not user friendly for recording and I wound up just using it as a second DVD player. I have it 2 years but used it maybe 50 times. I cant get the disk tray open and my 3 1/2 year olds Nemo DVD is stuck in there. I contacted GoVideo via email since all other ways were impossible and this is the response I got today and I quote: "Go Video no longer offers tech support or customer service." Hello! I looked up reviews on all GoVideo products offered now or at one time from Amazon and they are all basically the same as mine. Stay away from this brand!
Go.Video is out of business     On: 2006-06-10

Go.Video is out of business.

After 18 months, this units motherboard failed. Under a service contract, a local repair shop was stalled by Go.Video for two months before acknowledging that no replacement was available. My service contract provider will now only authorize $129.98 to replace the unit because "the marketplace"(Amazon)has set this price for the unit. As with the AKAI DVDRW120, which shares the underlying hardware and firmware, this unit has a sketchy reliability record.
Choose Something Else     On: 2006-05-13

I have been a GoVideo owner since 2004. I purchased this unit from a tv shopping channel and it had given relatively good service since its initial use. The unit recently stopped working and I have had a very difficult time in finding anyone here who repairs this equipment. The name/number that I given by the companys tech. support was not even accurate. When I called the repair shop, I was told they had never been connected with or did they ever submit any info. to GoVideo that they were a factory authorized service center. The other complaint that I have is that of the durablility of the product. My initial investment in 2004 was about $300. I would have expected a product under normal use to last for sometime longer than a couple of years. I have recently purchased a new unit and have stared again. Hopefully, this product will be somewhat more durable than the GoVideo product. And, hopefully, their tech. support and information will be a great deal more accurate.
Do they build these things to be disposable?     On: 2006-05-05

This DVDR lasted 15 months. It was plagued by intermittant operation and now the door wont open. Cant recommend this one.
Don't Buy It     On: 2006-03-09

My recorder broke just after a year. It wont format, the disc door wont open, etc... Also, you cant edit your recorder such as erasing the commericals to fit more tv show. I will not buy another GoVideo product. However, I do recommend using American Express Blue Cash to buy your electronics. Their Buyer Assurance program extended the warranty of my purchase by another year. AE credit my credit card the original purchase price instead of having me get the DVD recorder fix. I am very happy with AE. I am going to charge all my purchases with AE from now on. AE is how every company to run their business.
GO VIDEO - WORST COMPANY I'VE EVER DEALT WITH     On: 2006-02-16

I bought a unit from GO Video and experienced horrors with their customer service as mentioned in other reviews.

My unit came without any of the accessories and after 6 weeks of talking to more than a half dozen people (with more runaround than you can even begin to imagine) at go video, I still have a unit that will not work.

avoid this manufacturer!!
Great Unit, definetly a best buy     On: 2005-12-23

I had a expensive Philips DVDR 75 and it was a horrible experience, i spend around 100 dollars in damaged dvds, called support and they charged me (Philips) more for the repair than the actual cost of the unit.
So i decided to buy a new one, this new GoVideo rocks, it is simple to use, great performance, menus and the quality is great.
I should have bought this unit 2 years ago, so it would have saved me time, money and some sleep.

DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT!     On: 2005-08-17

One star is too high of a rating for this product. This unit was used approximately 4.5 hours per week, total viewing and recording time. After 14 months the unit died, two months past the warranty period. Its junk!
Very poor product - DON'T BUY     On: 2005-06-04

Since purchasing R6740 from HSN, my unit has been returned to GoVideo 4 times. You would think that a brand new unit being return within the first 30 days with a problem would be replaced with a new unit, NOT, they replaced with refurbised units. One unit was so used that the buttons were worn. R6740 was a huge mistake. Compatability issues, failed recordings, not able to erase and reuse a RW disc. Problems go on and on and on. Money wasted!!!!
Not Recommended     On: 2005-05-09

This Go Video recorder has been nothing but problems for me. It has already been replaced twice in less than six months by the store I purchased it at because it stopped working. The TV Tuner went out on the first two, and now, one month after getting the third one as a replacement, the Tuner has stopped working again. On top of that, when I try to record from any source I now get a clicking noise along with a "preparing DVD" message on screen that never goes away. Im through with Go Video products. If I get another DVD recorder it will be another brand, but Ill read the reviews first.
"No Disc"     On: 2005-05-04

I bought this DVD Recorder and when inserting blank DVD +R discs or pre-recorded movies into it, it just says "no disc". Trying to get it resolved w/the company, lets see how that turns out. The hold times for tech support are horrendous and after waiting for over 30 minutes on 5.2.5, I was disconnected!

So Cool     On: 2005-02-20

Im VERY pleasantly surprised! This inexpensive recorder makes good-looking video and just worked right, out of the box. I got Fuji DVD+RW discs to try, for no particular reason, and the machine had no issues.

If you need special features, you might want to look at another unit, but this one covers the basics quite nicely.
Great product, but with limitations     On: 2005-02-11

I purchased this DVD Recorder about a year ago and have basically been happy with it. It is very easy to set up, set the timer, record. The remote works well. The main problem I have encountered is that often, when you turn it on to record, there is a hissing in the recording. If you turn the recording off, and start the recording again, the hissing is not there. This is ok if you are home and there to correct the hissing sound, but not ok if you are gone and have set the timer to record something that you really want to see on tv and its destroyed by the hissing noise. This functionality of the machine is very disappointing. Its simple to assign titles to what you have recorded. Im waiting for another generation of the machines to come out and upgrade to a better model.

Works great since I downloaded upgrade     On: 2004-09-28

Potential buyers of this unit or other brands in the same price range should by knowledgeable of the two competing recordable media formats: DVD+ and DVD-. This unit records only to DVD+R and +RW and the write-once discs (DVD+R) recorded on the R6740 will NOT play on other DVD players, even when finalized. The +RWs WILL play on other players, that is if the machine doesnt give you the "Write Fail" message - this unit is quite particular about the brand of media you use. I recorded successfully with a pack of Memorex blanks, so I bought the same type of blanks again and continually got "Write Fail", so now Ive got to try another brand. Two emails to GoVideo have not been replied to so far, regarding this issue. I can also hear a low level whistling sound on playback with discs recorded on the R6740, although not that noticeable unless you turn the volume way up. Otherwise, this machine has great picture quality and is good as a player, or recorder if you can put up with the limitations Ive mentioned. UPDATE: Since writing this review I found out there was a downloadable upgrade for this unit that would make DVD+Rs (write-once discs) recorded on the machine playable on "third party" DVD players. I downloaded the upgrade, burned it to disc, placed it in the GoVideo and the upgrade process took about 3 minutes and now I CAN play DVD+Rs on the other players in my house. Add one star for a 4-star rating, although the companys customer service still havent replied to my emails but I think I can live with this thing now.
Surprisingly excellent!

I wanted to buy DVD recorder for quite some time. I ran out of patience and thought of buying one. I wanted to go for Philips R80 but after reading reviews for R80 I decided to give Govideo R6740 a try since I liked all the features and specifications. I had lot of doubts about it since it just came out in the market and I did not find good reviews on other Govideo DVD recorders. I bought, came home, I opened, I liked the design, I read the manual and started to record a VHS to DVD - no problems! I did not have to call their 1-800 number! It was all easy. I could check all the recording qualities in about 3 hrs - they are all good for the purpose though I would not use 6 hrs one for my home videos. I was really surprised by performance of the product compared to reviews of Philips R80. I have been recording (test) for more than a week now without any issues - I am really happy. UPDATE.... After reading Ricks review, I AGAIN checked my DVDs that I created (I used Memorex DVD +R media) using Govideo R6740 on my Magnavox DVD PLAYER. It played just fine. I did not have to download anything. I have converted my home videos to 50+ DVDs so far and did not have any issues at all. It could be DVD PLAYER issue. I do respect Ricks review and experience, but I wanted to update mine again since it was different experience. Hope this gives you additional datapoint for your decision.
