Awesome Product for Hi-MD Owners     On: 2006-02-25

Now you can transfer data from your Memory Stick/Pro-duo using this product to your Hi-MD without a computer. An electronic device that is smaller that what I had expected which is a plus carrying all those electronic gears. The only reason why I did not give it a 5 star rating is it only goes one way. Memory stick ----> Hi-MD. Otherwise, it is a must-to-have for Hi-MD owners.
Make Your Minidisc Recorder a Little More Useful     On: 2005-10-26

This is a very niche product -- its for people already using Hi-MD who also use a digital camera. I bought it because I hate to tote a laptop on vacation just to upload photos. But with an 8 megapixel camera, I fill up memory cards fast.

For me, the math is easy. A $2 blank MD holds the entire contents of my 256 MB xD card. So I only have to carry the MCM-DR1 and my minidisc recorder, which I always carry on vacation anyway so I can listen to tunes. When my card gets full, I pop the pics onto an MD and then Im ready to go again.

Sure, one of the new hard disc picture viewer/storage devices would do the same thing, and better, but at much more cost.

If you dont already own a Hi-MD recorder, or arent already into minidisc, then I dont recommend it. But if you own a Hi-MD (or intend to upgrade), and want an easy way to store or backup the contents of memory cards (it accepts most major formats including SD, xD, MemoryStick and CF) without having to tote around a laptop, then I cant recommend it highly enough.

Its simple and it works, doing exactly what it promises to. My only complaint is that it can be a little slow when youve got a few hundred megabytes to transfer (darn USB 1.1).
Great Companion     On: 2005-09-04

Easy to deal with it.Easy to carry on.Easy to keep all your memory sticks empty and ready when you travel,I,ve travel with my Sony photos and video equipment.Get it Now,and keep your memories ready for that Shot!
Works great for those few who need it.     On: 2005-05-27

I shoot all my video on my sony dscw1. Even with two 1GB memory sticks I need to dump the footage somewhere. If I am camping or on vacation, this little gem is the perfect device. I always have my Hi MD player with me anyway. I dump my footage to a six dollar Md disc and shoot more video. The process is a bit slow but might be necessary. If you are just shooting pics then you might want to just buy a bigger memory card, but for video, this thing is a life saver.
Utterly pointless device     On: 2005-01-05

So you need to copy data onto Hi-MD minidiscs? But why?! You have to plug your minidisc player into this thing and copy the data off the memory card onto your minidisc player, but youre not done yet. You need to then copy the data off your minidisc player onto your PC using Sonys software. The major advantage is that a Hi-MD minidisc holds about 1 gigabyte, but that advantage is only economic: a 1-gigabyte hi-MD minidisc is about six dollars, which isnt bad right now, but since this device is over a hundred bucks, just get yourself another memory card and leave this thing alone.

Speaking of costs, this device consumes AAA batteries--it doesnt even get power via USB. Steer clear unless youre a die-hard minidisc fan looking for reasons to keep using minidisc.
