Meets my needs     On: 2007-11-04

I wanted a small TV for my yoga room to watch yoga DVDs. I also wanted it to be able to connect to cable TV so if I wanted to someday move it to a bathroom or the kitchen I could. It comes with a nice cable adapter. The DVD player works great along with the remote control. Its very light weight. I also like that it has a clear glass cover over the LCD screen. So far I have no complaints.
Great little kitchen TV     On: 2007-07-10

This is a great little kitchen TV at the right price. Powered right up and took off....great picture...ok audio...works for me. It arrived in three days.
Axion AXN-7080 perfect for my needs     On: 2007-01-18

I was looking for a small TV that had a cable tuner that I could fit in my roll-top desk. This one was the only small TV I could find with a cable tuner. The screen quality is not the greatest, but for the price "who cares". I have not tried the DVD player, which I understand from other reviews is problematic. Ive only used it for a couple of weeks, but so far Im ecstatic.
Enjoying the Axion 8" LCD TV/DVD Player     On: 2007-01-10

I received this product for Christmas and really enjoy using it. I wanted an under cabinet TV for my kitchen but the depth of my cabinets and the under cabinet lighting dont allow for the installation of that type of TV. This is a great alternative. Its small enough to use very little space but large enough for comfortable viewing. The DVD player is easy to access and the sound is quite good. If the sound quality were a bit better I would give it five stars.
Had to return     On: 2007-01-04

The TV was great but you need to use cable and I was putting it in the basement and it was going to be a hassle for the cable company to install a cable in that room. I bought the best antenna but it didnt work. The description should have included that cable was necessary. The remote didnt work either. Amazon was great about taking the return.
NO ANTENNEA FOR THE TV!     On: 2006-11-13

This portable TV sounds great except they made a few mistakes in the design. They dont tell you that there is NO ANTENNEA nor that the TV will not work without an antennea! The portable DVD player is great. THE TV IS HORRIBLE. When we did get an antennea the tv worked but we went to numerous stores and the all the antenneas we found were big and bulky plus had to be hooked then unhooked when we wanted to put the unit away without an antennea sticking out to get broken. DONT BUY THIS FOR THE TV! We ended up purchasing a different product that had the antennea built in. This one was a total waste of money.

We love it! This is great for camping or just taking from room to room as needed.
parts missing & customer service not available     On: 2006-11-02

i got this to have at our home for our grandson but it came with no remote although the box stated one was included plus it didnt seem to work in our home with our cable service and after calling customer service several times and only getting voice mail.....i felt it might be a sign that this product was a lemon and id better cut my loses and return it! it may just have been the ONE that i received but it didnt seem like an American made high quality item. Again it may only have been ONE lemon and the rest may all be super....but im only commenting on my experience so you can weigh your decision to buy or not on that. =D

Great for the RV     On: 2006-10-08

We were looking for a small light weight TV-DVD combination for our RV. The Axion performs well playing even MPEG 3 and DVD, CDR, and has video input for our digital camcorder. The sound is good, but could use exterior speaker connections. The 12V-120V connector is great for RV users since AC is not always available. With quick mounts, the TV can be used in many locations. The picture quality is very good.

Very rarely am I so impressed where I feel compelled to write up an optional review of something I purchase. But in this case im happy to take the time to do so. My reason for buying this product was to keep informed of news and weather conditions during power outages, I have a 1500 Volt Ampre UPS battery back-ups system hooked up to this TV and between its very modest voltage requirements, DVD feature, and of course TV capability, Its worked out astronomically well..........The performance and quality of service/reception it provides is second to NOTHING ive used in the past. Im a 2-Way radio comms tekky type person, and always beleived in being prepared for the un-expected, but I must stress the point as to how well this little TV works & what a fine fit and finish the company put into its production of this DVD/TV/Video Display unit. Thanks Amazon.Com for offering it to us, and for the fine website choices I had available to me. Respectfully Yours....Frank.
Perfect for my needs     On: 2006-07-26

In spite of some of the poor reviews for this product, it met all of my expectations 100%. Thanks to the reviews, I understood that the unit doesnt have a builtin antenna or batteries, which was helpful to know in advance. But of course the specifications never claimed those features in the first place.

I was looking for a small TV to fit in the corner of my bathroom, and this unit is perfect for that. As a bonus, I can not only watch the news while Im getting ready for work in the morning, but I can listen to MP3 rips when Im in the shower. Ive owned the unit for several weeks now, use it every day, and have never had a problem playing any disk, either copy-protected movies or CDs. My only concern so far has been that I didnt receive a warrantee card with the unit.

I especially like the portability. Its so easy to pick up and take anywhere, such as watching a movie in bed, and even outside (if its not too bright out) for watching sports on the patio. The speakers are adequate, considering their size, and the headphone jack lets me either use headphones or external amplified speakers if I want better quality.

In summary, I have to repeat that my expectations were set before I bought the unit and I am very pleased with what I got for the price.
Great Product     On: 2006-05-20

Ive never written a review before but I see this product is getting a bum rap by some people who are upset that it doesnt have an internal antenna. If you have cable hook-up dont let them deter you from purchasing this excellent TV/DVD player. The picture is superb and the sound quality is very good. Ive been using it for 8 months now in the kitchen and have had not one single problem. My house guests also like it. Highly recommend!
Good TV for the kitchen     On: 2005-12-27

This is a nice little TV/DVD system.
Its small, wall mountable and has a 90 degree F connector for connecting a regular coax cable instead of just using RCA cables.

The picture quality is good and the sound quality is acceptable but not great. Played DVDs, CDs, MP3 Cds and jpeg CDs fine.

If the sound quality had been better I would have given it 5 stars.

great bedside table tv     On: 2005-09-27

Needed a tv that did not take up space and could be loaded with a dvd easily for my bedside table. This one did the trick nicely. Good features, good picture, good sound. Works very well with dvds and pillow speaker to keep my partner from being bothered with my late night movie watching.

Excellent value - pleased with size (fits nicely into a small space, e.g., cupboard), color, clarity, sound, ease of installation, and operating use.
Great small LCD TV/DVD player.     On: 2005-08-23

Madeline wanted a small TV to watch her programs on @ her sewing machine workshop area and to be able to watch DVD videos as well. It had to be small to fit in the space. This model works just right, has good sound, and a decent picture as well. The contrast ratio could be a little better, but it is fine for her purposes. It receives cable & satellite signals very well.
Defenitely Dissapointed     On: 2005-08-19

Definitely Disappointed

The main purpose of buying this product was to use it on the road, however
It does not work (bum) with an external antenna. Any other tv does, its really disappointing.

No Antenna Reception     On: 2005-08-09

This is a great little portable tv if you will be using it with cable outlet or DVD. I strongly do not recommend this tv if you plan to use it with an antenna. We originally bought the tv to use while camping in places where we dont always have cable access. We cant even pick up our local channels in our home using the best antennas money could buy. Called customer service and they were very unhelpful...told us that if the tv picked up cable channels, then there was nothing wrong with the tv reception. Cust Serv continued to tell us that we had poor reception in our home. However, we pick up all local channels with every other tv in our home using the same antennas we tried with this tv. I am going to send this tv back while it is still under warranty!

This is a great DVD/TV combo. I receive most of the channels via an external antenna. I have this in my personal room. I dont need to buy another separate DVD player. Its really a space saver. The DVD runs great and clear. I also hook up this to my cable TV. It can receive all channels. I strongly recommend this one.
The unit did not function as a television     On: 2005-08-01

I bought this item to function as both a television and DVD player, and to replace my old, bulky Action (aka Axion) 5 inch TV. But the Axion TV/DVD would not operate as a TV because it never received about half of the broadcast channels in my area. I never tested the DVD player function.

I do not have cable or direct TV. The 3 TVs in my home receive all thirteen (13) local broadcast channels with the aid of indoor antennas, or, in the case of the 5-inch Action TV, via its built-in monopole antenna. So I was surprised when the Axion TV/DVD could not receive channels.

The Axion TV/DVD does not appear to have a built-in antenna. If it does, it is not visible. Without an antenna, it received about 2 of the 13 available channels, but poorly. I tried every possible indoor antenna I could find (Radio Shack was very gracious with all my returns). I returned the first unit and tried a second unit, thinking the first was defective, and again tried various antennas. I tried other locations for the TV/DVD. But at best I could only get about half of the 13 channels to be viewable, even with the best indoor antenna. I even called Axion itself, and they could not help. So I returned the second unit for a full refund.

If Axion ever builds a similar TV/DVD player with a similar price that has decent TV reception, I would give it another try because the price and small size are great.

The unit stopped working properly on my 6th day of ownership     On: 2005-03-04

I orginally gave it a 4 stars rating, yet I have deleted the previous review and typed this new one instead for the updates:

This review contains two sections 1 & 2,

Section 1 is the update on March 05, 2005. Section 2 is my original review written on March 01, 2005.

====(Section 1)====

Dont buy it. It does not eject my VCD on my sixth day of ownership of this Axion product. I am very unhappy as the VCD is not mine, but my friends.

Now, I have decided to go with the new Emerson 7" DVD/VCD + TV LCD TFT unit now. Emerson name has been around for much longer time and should be much more reliable compared to this new name Axion, which is made in Taiwan.

If you continue to read section 2, you will see how I orginally recommended this Axion (although not more now!).

====(Section 2)====

This is a very versatile unit. However, it also is not perfect.

This unit arrived two days ago as a gift. I opened the box and this unit looks pretty shiny and cute. It is about 9"X 2" X 7" with the stand, it is higher. And the case feels solid and the stand can be adjusted to a degree for better viewing angle.

Connected the unit with the ac/dc adaptor that comes with it, it is nice. Inserted a VCD of an Asian movie, it played right away. The first two minutes, the LCD screen was self-adjusting, picture was blurry at that 2 minutes interval. Then, it was all clear and bright. Turned the brightness down and it worked and looked pretty clear and the quality is pretty good for a small unit like this. Of course, I am not talking about HDTV quality here, however for a portable entertainment unit, I think that this unit shows pretty good pictures.

Playing the Asian movie, you know how the movies go, usually the left channel is Cantonese and the right channel is Mardarin. Since this unit is stereo sound, it will give you both dialogue at the same time. You cannot switch to either left or the right speaker. However, I solved this by connecting to a pair of computer speakers and used only the left speaker to listen to the Cantonese dialogue.

One thing about the units speakers, they are small, but they give very clear sound and pretty loud enough for a car, SUV, van, truck or even a 150 sq. ft. room. I even connected it to my cable tv line, it hooks up right away and it is just like using my home big screen tv, but without the big screen. So, the cable works!

I have tried, this unit also plays Kodak picture CDs, and Kodak camera filmed movies and other DVD camcorder DVDs. This unit is so versatile. We took the unit to our car and used it for one day in the car. Hooking it up to the cigarette plug-in power source is easy since it comes with the adapter. The unit works well in car. We connected the digital camera to the unit and photos are viewed through the LCD screen, nice!

Also, if you put in Kodak picture CD, it turns into an electronic album for you so that it shows you one picture after another, each with duration for about 5 seconds. Very nice!

So this unit is almost perfect...

However, a big big however, the unit does not have a handle; meaning it is difficult to carry it around with ease. One has to be careful otherwise it slips out of hand easily. One has to use two hands to carry it. Why doesnt Axion attach a handle for this "portable" unit?

Watching tv is very much dependable on the reception ability. I have no problem receiving channel 5 & 7, but have some problem receiving channel 2 in downtown area. So, I will try with a Radio Shack Tv antenna soon and see if it will get better, but hey, the TV works !!

The remote also works well. It let you jump to the next section if you watching Karaoke or other MTVs, etc. It lets you select between TV/DVD/Aux mode for AUX is useful if you want to play game on this unit and connect it to another DVD player, etc. The remote also let you eject the DVD/VCD/CD, control volume, picture quality, sound level, etc. And is pretty intuitive.

Connected this unit to my big screen tv, it works too. I can watch the Asian movie and American movies on my big screen tv while the Axion is playing the VCD/DVD.

In short:

Pros:

1, being versatile, plays DVD, VCD, CD, CD+RW, Kodak picture CDs, camera recorded movies, DVD camcorder recorded movies, etc. And it can also work as an electronic photo album.

2, Light weight: about 7 lbs in total. To me, it is pretty light and easy to carry.

3, cute design, look cyber in silver!!

4, good sound, the speakers are small but they are stereo speakers and sound is clear. But, dont expect bass thought, if you do, connect it to your home sound system.

5, price, about the same as other DVD ONLY units, yet you get TV on this one plus cable tv capability.

Cons:

1, no handle to make it easy to carry around

2, no straps that comes with this unit so that you can secure it against the headrest of your car easily

3, no carrying case/bag that comes with this unit

4, no headphone that comes with it, you have to buy it on your own. And, there is only one headphone/headset jack.

As of this writing, another new unit is on the horizon:

Emerson M-Box 701TN Portable 7" Headrest Monitor with DVD Player / TV Tuner

Versus the Axion, the Emerson unit has (1) a handle for carrying around easily, (2) two headsets jacks, (3) comes with strap to secure it on the headrests of our cars, (4) one free wireless headset.

Like the Axion, the Emerson unit also comes with (1) AC/DC adapter, car power adapter, TV Tuner, remote control.

However, the only drawback of the Emerson unit versus the Axion is that the Axion is 8" wide for the LCD screen, the Emerson is 7" only. So, whichever suit your situation.

To me, both work well for me though. I watch it in car, at home, in office. No problem. Rent a movie at a Blockbuster and watch it in car and return it afterward. Kind of fun! Then, watch ESPN sport on cable at home, watch the news while on the road. Both of them should do the jobs admirably.

Do I recommend the Axion and Emerson, I recommend the Axion by now since the Emerson is not even out yet, but will be out within a month as of this writing today 3/1/05. Check with Amazon.

I deduct the Axion one star since it doesnt have a handle to make it easy to carry around and does not come with straps to make it easy to secure it in the car. Other than these, this unit shines!!

---------------------------------------------------
One last words (3/5/2005):

Remember section 2 was my original recommendation, and I no longer recommend this faulty product since it stopped ejecting the VCD that I inserted on my sixth day of ownership.

I am returning this Axion unit and will put my money on the upcoming new Emerson unit which has the same features plus TFT LCD, not just LCD; and one free wireless headset; and handle for carrying around easily; and carry bag; and securing strap; and better expected reliability from Emerson.
