I purchased this tuner two years ago now when Howard was doing his sound check before leaving terrestrial radio. It gets warm, but Ive fallen asleep with it on God knows how many times with it still running and no problems yet. I keep this thing hard-wired. Either into a Sony receiver via 1/8" to RCA or, 1/8" to cassette adapter. Even with the cassette adapter the sound is good. Actually excellent. I have no complaints except for the remote. The remote well is not that durable in a shop environment, in a ziploc bag. The tuner buttons themselves have taken plenty of use however, and offer no problems. I have read lots of bad reviews on this tuner but mine is great. Just think every NFL game, NBA, NASCAR, and most importantly Howard Stern in crisp audio regular radio cant touch. Just hard wire it. Its not difficult these days. Drop $100 for a head unit with a 1/8" plug in, maybe $160 for those of you not mechanically inclined to have said head unit installed. It will be the best thing you ever do. On: 2007-11-29

This is the 2nd one of these I have had, and the 2nd one my husband has had. The first two we got for X-Mas 2004 and were returning them both to JVC by Nov 2005. JVC gave us a horrible time, but since it was under warranty, they replaced both of them.
Now, tonight, my light sensor per JVC has gone out and they wont replace it. I can ship it to them and they will look at it for $65 and then diagnose it. Well.. the lady told me over the phone what the problem was. Then she said they will charge me to fix it, then ship it back.
WHAT??? I dont even know what to do. She suggested calling Circuit City or Best Buy for repair... both of them say NO WAY!!
Well....not such good luck.
When this unit works.. it is great... but we have had 4... and issues with all them..
Good luck! On: 2007-01-07
Very convenient to move this unit between the car and the boombox. However the FM modulator would not work at all in our new 4Runner, even with a simple antenna added to it. We use a cassette adapter -- it degrades the sound quality somewhat. If we had it installed again, wed buy and install the adapter needed to connect the FM modulator output to our FM radios antenna cable.
The red display began to be intermittent before it was a year old, now it completely out (15 months old) and is going back to JVC. Hopefully theyll give us a refurbished unit in exchange. On: 2007-01-06

Ive had this unit for a year and during that time, Ive experienced the following:
-Hissing no matter which FM station is chosen
-Alert feature doesnt appear to work properly. Many times I am not alerted to the songs I have saved in my favorites. Ill turn the station and theres a song I have saved, but wasnt alerted.
-The lighted display crapped out this weekend. Its dark.
I am a Mom and dont ever remove this from my car. I rarely touch the unit and opt instead to use the remote. So the wear on it is minimal. It was a poor purchase at best. On: 2006-12-06

I purchased one of these when new back in 2004. The unit has worked ok for me, with the main quirk being about once every hour or two, I go through a 3 - 5 minute period of bad reception, presumably as it shifts from one satelite to another. I was unable to utilize the fm modulator as it was weak, but went to a hard wired connection to my radio using a cable purchased from Crutchfield.
My main issue with this unit is that there are newer units available for the same or slightly more money, which have replay options and better displays. I would consider those options before purchasing this unit. On: 2006-10-30

I have two seperate units. One hardwired to my car, and the other is the JVC unit. I hooked it directly into the audio (aux) ports of my Radio, rather than use an fm station. It works great, the sound quality is excellent as well - (and my radio is so old it plays 8-tracks!!!!). I did notice that the unit tends to run a bit warm to hot. I agree with the previous reviews, that it is something that JVC needs to look into, perhaps it is simply a matter of a "heat sink-er" not being in specs, as yet, I have encountered no problems (having had the JVC unit for 1.5 years) No matter. As to the commercial free: Sirius (which I have had a subscription to for the past 4 years) has commercial free radio, though the news stations and a few others do have commercials. Those stations are clearly defined as being in the commercial block. The music stations are 100% free of commercial.
All in all a damn cheap price to pay for avoidance of all those really irritating DJs, commericals, and lack of variety in stations! ~Cheers! On: 2006-05-07
For the longest time I really didnt think $12 a month was worth this kind of radio but after buying the sr-2000 and getting it all hooked up in my car I soon changed my mind.
Biggest thing for me is hardly any DJ talking, they really keep the music going. I noticed on a couple other reviews this was not the case, I listen to only the rock stations so I cant comment on other stations. I live in the Seattle area and using the FM modulator really sucked, every station had static. I found an audio input cable online to fit my car stereo for a direct connection and oh man what a difference!! Crystal Clear! I did have to play with the bass and treble a bit to get the best sound and since I have a sub-woofer I used the fader a couple of clicks to the front (away from the sub) and really got it sounding great.
It doesnt sound as good as a CD but much better than regular Radio. So I bought another car kit and I have the boom box for in the house. I did notice the unit getting a little warm but nowhere near hot. On: 2006-05-06

I purchased this receiver in December 2005. It worked like a champ until February 2006 when it began to have issues with decoding the satellite signal.
The unit works for five minutes from cold start up, then the audio cuts out. Display still shows program info. Being an experienced PC user, I turned the unit off and back on, repeatedly. The message "Acquiring Signal" displays permanently, even though the Antenna Aiming screen shows full SAT and TER signal bars.
My best guess is that a ROM or RAM chip cooked. This unit runs hot! JVC has been less than helpful. It sucks to have to landfill a $100 piece of hardware, but no one will touch it. Its my last purchase from JVC.
Glad I didnt purchase the Sirius "lifetime" license! On: 2006-02-05
This Unit performs well, both in the car and home. It performs best at home as you can plug it right into your stereo vs. using a unused FM frequency. This might work ok in rural areas, but in urban areas how long is the FM frequency "unused"? In my experience living in Chicago, not very far. then you get static and fumble to change the frequency to another unused station. Plus you have this thing hanging out from your dash, very noticable expecially to theives so its then one more then you have to remove and hide or take with you. If you want Sirius in your car, invest in a head unit and be done with it.
This unit works great at home and if you get an extra kit, you can take it to your office and hook it up there. It has a remote and Ive had no problems with it whatsoever at home. Like I said, for the car I ended up getting a separate head unit and would advise people to do the same. On: 2006-01-15
I think this is a very good receiver. A number of people have complained about issues with the wireless FM Modulator and the static that is causes. I would say that there is some static at times, but most of the time I have not had this issue. However, I will clarify that statement, by noting that if you are traveling long distances, you most likely will have to switch the FM Frequency a few times during the trip (In my case it was a two hour trip from Sacramento to the Bay Area) as the station you are set to will likely not be free for that entire time. However, it is very easy to switch the frequency, so I was able to adjust it without any difficulties.
As for the receiver itself, I like the compactness of it and it does not take long to figure out how to go through the various menus, save stations, etc. I did not care much for the suction cup that is part of the car kit. Although it worked fine on my car window, I really didnt want it there, so I actually just use the cradle and place it in one of my cupholders, but this is a personal preference.
I would definitely recommend this receiver to my friends.

First of all I thought Sat radio advertised " Commercial Free radio" was that. IT IS NOT AT ALL!!!! In fact I spend most of my time looking over the 160 chanels for something not with commercials. (...). They claim they have nothing to do with that. So this is a good buy IF you want another radio player WITH commercials ( A lot of them ) and to pay for it. I got this because I was tired of radio commercials and awful radio announcers who talked over songs and too much. Well sattelite radio is the same thing just with cussing. So keep this in mind before you buy. On: 2005-12-18

I bought the boom box and the car kit. The FM Modulator has a much better reception than when I have it in the boom box at home. Unlike others, I have perfect reception with the wrieless modulator..at least for now. Im going ahead and buying the home aentenna to get a better reception for when I use the boombox at home.
All in all, Great buy and I cant wait for STERN! On: 2005-10-26

I got this for hubby and me over the summer. We used it for our trip to Rehoboth beach and we loved every minute of it. WE have a tape deck in the car and used it w/ a cassette adaptor. We had not problems whatsoever, in fact it sounds much better thru the cassette adaptor than over the fm transmitter.
I did try it thru the fm transmitter and it was a pain to switch from one station to the next, but i dont think anybody can improve upon that. I had the same problem w/ my itrip.
We chose sirius for several reasons...i liked the classic vinyl station, my dad introduced me to that and hubby likes nascar and this is switching over in 2007.
The only problem i had was i couldnt read the red lettering in the daylight w/ the sunglasses on, but i didnt give them less than 5 stars because of this.
this is the way to go, plus it has a suction mount, not a permanent mount.
also, if you look on ebay, someone is selling something to adapt your mount to the bolt on your car seat!!
definitely go satellite, the music is great and little/ no commercials depending on the stations. On: 2005-06-25
I recently bought this radio, primarily for my car, but also got the home dock. It was easy to set up and install both types of kit. Unfortunately, the sound quality was very poor in both configurations. The FM modulator for the car was pretty close to hopeless. It only has maybe 10 channels. I found one that was free, luckily. But even with a clear channel, the sound had a terrible hiss, that went up and down in volume at apparent random even when everything was stationary. The occupied channels actually worked about as well (still lots of hiss)- except when the underlying channel broke through. Even disregarding the hiss, the sound quality on the music was not very good.
I thought the problem was probably with the FM modulator, so I tried it in the home dock, connected to a *very good* home hi-fi system. The hiss was gone, but the sound quality was completely unacceptable. For whatever reason, this particular receiver doesnt like the compression artifacts very much. Satellite radio quality is, AT BEST, about like an average MP3, with highly compressed signals (some channels better than others). This receiver seemed to exacerbate the effect, and it sounded a lot like a tin can and string "telephone" most of the time. It was vert irritating very quickly.
The form factor (about the size of a modern walkie-talkie) was fine, and pretty easy to fit in the car. It also seemed to be pretty solidly built. But all of that is completely moot if it doesnt work properly.
I returned the receiver and both kits the next day. On: 2005-06-24
I own this JVC unit and the XM Roady 2 unit so I can make a good comparison. The XM Roady 2 blows this unit out of the water. Immediately after getting JVC Sirius Satellite receiver it started to overheat and then shut down. It is very heavy in comparison making it more difficult to mount in a vehicle. It falls down from the weight. My XM Roady 2 is very light, never overheats and was easier to mount.
I contacted JVC about the problem and they had me return the unit at my own expense weeks ago and have informed me since that they have accidentally sent the unit back to someone else who was having problems. I guess that means Im just SOL. Luckily I have had my XM ROADY 2 for over a year and am thrilled with it. I plan to buy another one to replace the JVC in the other vehicle. On: 2005-06-18
I received my Sirius Satellite radio for Fathers day. Couldnt be happier, and dont see myself listening to regular radio ever again. I didnt give it 5 stars for only 1 reason. The FM modulator is a bit dissapointing. I travel about 100 miles a day in my car and have to change the station Im listening to the radio on at least once. While the JVC unit makes it pretty easy, it can be a little bit of a pain. Overall, the unit is great. I used to laugh at people having a remote control with their radios, now I see why they have them...just soo much easier to use. GET SATELITTE RADIO NOW!!!! On: 2005-04-01
I use the KT-SR2000 to receive Sirius and output the sound through my iMac. I use a little Griffin Tech device to introduce the signal to the computer (RCA in, single 3.5mm out). Im impressed with it so far, excellent sound and no headaches getting it hooked up at home. I also have a car kit for the KT-SR2000 that works well. The price was good and it does want I want and then some. On: 2005-03-31

I have had the JVC KT-SR2000 with Sirius service for about 6 weeks now. It is a lot of fun and provides constant variety while driving on a long commute. But the ideal I had envisioned about satellite radio did not come to fruition.
PLUSES:
- Excellent selection of stations, including many sub-genres of Rock, Jazz, Classical, News, etc.
- Easy to set up with the car kits
- Compact size head unit
MINUSES:
- Sound quality through the FM transmitter is terrible. The music stations sound a little better than AM, and the news/talk stations sound worse than AM (I am listening to this through a Lexus OEM stereo). If I compare to my iPod with Belkin FM transmitter, there is no comparison - the iPod sounds as good or better than any FM station.
- Sound quality through the home kit, with direct connection to home stereo system, is also poor. There is little dynamic range, the music tracks sound compressed, the bass is muddy, and the highs are truncated.
- The music stations have annoying DJs in between songs - what for? Everything I need to know (artist, song title) is right there on the screen. Get rid of the DJs, eliminate their salaries, and instead lower the monthly service charge!
Maybe the in-dash Sirius units sound better? I hope so. On: 2005-03-26

I chose this model because it came with the only magnetic mounting antenna I could find. Its a breeze to switch to other vehicles. All the other units I looked at had an adhesive mounted antenna (for cars), too permanent for me and I have 3 cars.
The best part about this unit is that when you attach the included FM antenna wire to the thing (like it says in the manual)it can be picked up by every radio on all 3 stories of my house and on my walkman in my backyard.
I was initially worried about getting sat. radio because I like listening to my walkman while out working in the yard. The transmitter reaches all over my yard great and I can even tune in on a radio out in my shed with the unit on in my house. I keep it in an upstairs bedroom on the top floor of my house and it reaches to the tuner in the basement fine.
I love the programming as well and would highly recommend this unit to anyone because of its portability between vehicles with one antenna and its transmitter that whill cover every radio in your house (and yard). On: 2005-02-20

I was told at the store this product has an excellent fm modulator. Very wrong. This was the reason i bought it and am very disappointed. Do not buy unless you have a direct hook up. On: 2005-01-17
Chose Sirius for content reasons, after shopping extensively for Sirius PNP receivers, chose the JVC unit for the following reasons:
-- small size "PDA style" -- can fit in your pocket
-- super bright/readable screen -- crisp red LED on black background
-- wanted a second generation receiver from mfr who had first gen experience (JVC 2000 supersedes 1000)
-- reputation for very good antenna
-- rumor that soon-to-be release boombox will be superb
I was not disappointed. Installed in car with antenna on dash and experienced very few drop outs despite less than optimal antenna location. Did notice a bit of hiss with the integral FM modulator, so opted for direct connection to my "MP3" Aux input on the car stereo... beautiful sound with the direct connection. Screen indeed readable in bright sunlight. Channel/category switch on the unit a bit clunky (though buttons on remote are fine = "real buttons")... other than this Im highly satisfied. The 18 presets on the unit more than enough for me and suction cup dash/window mount that comes with the car kit seems bulletproof and very tight (especially vs. double-stick tape approach with other units). Nice thing about the PDA form factor when used in the car is that its easy to slip in your pocket if leaving the car in a theft-prone area. Unit runs warm but nowhere near as hot as I thought it might given other online comments.
Sirius programming seems a bit more oriented to older demographic vs. XM. I liked (1) extensive news including PBS/BBC/PRI/World, (2) reggae/tropical/vacation channels, (3) tighter music genres in general (vs. more thematic on XM)... and in 2006 am looking forward to Howard Sterns move from FM to Sirius. Only programming on XM not on Sirius that I miss is MSNBC. Also note that Sirius traffic/weather is slightly less convenient since they put two cities on each channel, cycling coverage through each.
Looking forward to getting the boombox for the JVC KT-SR2000 soon... this appears to be simple, clean aesthetically (would look ok at home) and has a bass-boost capability... a/c adapter and antenna with 20 cord included. On: 2005-01-16

I was originally leery of this model because some reviewers mentioned that the sound quality from the FM modulator isnt great, and reception from the FM modulator to car radio is spotty. At worst, audio quality of some of the talk/news stations is a bit on the tinny side; sounds like AM radio. This does not bother me but your, mileage may vary. The car mounting cradle has an audio output jack, so you can plug in headphones, or you can plug the output directly into your car sound system (if your car system has audio input capability). I found that moving the radio so its in line with my FM antenna relieves most static problems encountered with the FM modulator. Short of buying an indash, hard-wired unit, I dont think you can get much better.
Another thing I like about this unit is the small size. Most of the units I looked at were rather large and would either not fit on my dash or would take up too much space. I have a leather interior so I didnt want anything that required screws or bolts going into the dash board. The car kit for this unit uses a suction cup that attaches to the windshield. I havent even bothered with the car mount. I just set the radio in the drink holder between the front seats. I use the remote control so I dont need to have the display of the unit sitting right in front of me.
Programming is excellent. A wide variety of stations for all levels of interest.
My only complaint is my experience with customer service. I sent an Email with a few questions about my service and promptly received an auto-reply telling me Id have a response from customer service within 24 hours. 2 says later, still no response so I called the customer service number provided on the Sirius web site. I was on hold for more than 20 minutes. Not to happy about that.
All in all this is a good unit and Sirius offers a great bang for your bucks. On: 2005-01-02
I bought the JVC KT-SR2000 with the home connection kit (KS-K6013) and the Terk Sirius Outdoor antenna, as a Christmas present for the "house". The delivery was on time as promised and the installation was a breeze. The only problem encountered was freeing the receiver from its titanium strength plastic packaging.
The receiver is used primarily as an alternative to CDs, and is connected directly to a Sony receiver. Eventually, Ill get some car connection kits for our cars. We are located in the foothills of Southern California and as such have poor FM reception. The audio quality of Sirius via the JVC SR2000 is obviously better than our non existent FX reception...and on the average "almost" CD quality.
With the indoor/outdoor antenna provided with the home connection kit mounted on the top of our our entertainment center, the reception varied from full bars to none. We do not a convenient location to place the antenna at a North/East facing window. So, I had already planned to install the Terk outdoor antenna and with that we always get maximum reception even during the recent heavy monsoon like Southern California rains.
I can not compare Sirius to XM. I chose Sirius over XM for a few of the extra programs Sirius offers (you can listen for 3 days free online as www.siriusradio.com) We are quite pleased with the programming, minimal DJ jabber, and lack of official commercials. Yes, they do some self promotion; but, it is very minimal...and even let us know that they had a "Sounds of the Season Channel" that we were not previously aware of. We listen primarily to classic rock and some jazz, and are pleased with the variety and breadth of the programming.
If you want excellent quality music, in a compact format, I highly recommend the JVC-SR2000 with the home connection kit (KS-K6013) and the Terk Sirius outdoor antenna. On: 2005-01-01
I bought the JVC KT-SR2000 with the home connection kit (KS-K6013) and the Terk Sirius Outdoor antenna, as a Christmas present for the "house".
Ill make it short and to the point. Everything is great with the exception of the built in FM modulator. Signal strength from modulator to FM radio is weak at best.
If you live in or around a major city with college radio etc. taking up most of the lower end of the FM band, dont expect fine audio. My unit is overpowered by local stations even though its only 4 feet from my antenna.
When other stations are not cutting in, there is a constant noticable hiss at all times. JVC support told me to purchase a hard wired FM transmitter. My advise to them was to make it work or dont sell it.
My review was only to allert others of this flaw.
I am also an XM subscriber and do not have this issue with my Roady unit.
