Battery Dead After Four Months     On: 2007-07-28

I did what the others said to do when I first got this for my son. After watching a full length feature dvd with it plugged in, I shut it off and unplugged it. At first the battery lasted 5 hours. It was great! But it started to hold less and less of a charge. Now it wont hold a charge at all no matter what we do. It will still work on dc but I needed this for my sons 1 1/2 hour bus ride to school, and he cannot plug into any outlet on the bus, so were back to square one in finding him a durable dvd player for that long ride.
hand held dvd product     On: 2007-02-08

Cumbersome to use, but good quility picture and fair sound. Can attach it to a TV for a larger picture. I however use it rarely because I now use my vedio IPOD which can do more with much better quality for home, and offsite program displays for differant organization.

player review     On: 2007-01-17

I like this model of player for ease of use for younger children, in fact it is the second one I have purchased. But I cannot rate it as high as I would like due to the fact that both players have had problems with the "door" getting too loose and it then will not signal the DVD to start playing. I have remedied this by holding it closed with a clear elastic band. A big pain. They need to make a better latch.
Audiovox D1420 4.2" Portable DVD Player.     On: 2007-01-06

Not as good as I expected The latch broke, it only lasted one Monthe by openig and closing the cover, it didnt last to long.
BigRmax     On: 2006-11-11

I liked the screen size and the clarity of the picture. I didnt like the fact that it doesnt come with a remote control, and the ff control on the unit cant shuttle scan disk. it will only take you to the next chapter!over all a good product that could be better!
I Ordered one, but first two were broken!     On: 2006-11-02

I would love to try this. First one was shipped broken (make a clanking noise and woulndt work). Sent it back and got a new one that didnt read a DVD. I may try one more time.
Its pretty heavy, but I am hoping the larger screen is better then other small portables or i-pod type machines.
I've had multiple battery problems     On: 2006-10-23

I received this for Christmas 2005 as a gift. The new player out of the box wouldnt hold a charge for longer than 2 minutes no matter how many different ways I tried to play and charge it. In February 2006 I had to pay Audiovox $60 for a new battery (item was a gift so I did not have original receipt for the warranty). Now it is October 2006 and the new battery has stopped taking a charge again. Audiovox informes me that I must pay another $35 to have it fixed again (since I am past the 90 day warranty). Im very angry that in order to make it run for more than 10 months, Im supposed to pay $95, the cost of a new machine. My husband has a Panasonic portable DVD player that has been running great for 10 years with one battery change so Im going to look into that brand.
Battery is a serious issue     On: 2006-09-07

I bought this thing for my brother and he used it four or five times. The battery is "defective" and needs to be replaced. Ive heard on a number of sites that the batteries are "defective." Dont buy this thing if you plan on using it without an adapter of some sort. Costs $35 to replace the battery, which is built-in and requires sending the whole machine back. With shipping, Im sure it costs over half of what most people pay. The only thing "defective" is the machine itself (and the wonderful people at Audiovox). Other than that its great!!!
just follow the advice....     On: 2006-07-16

Following the advice of other reviewers, I played a full length DVD on AC power before charging and Ive had no problems with the battery. Small, compact and gets the job done! The open button (to remove a DVD) seems like it doesnt latch properly, but its never popped open while playing so I guess its OK.
Battery Wouldn't Charge     On: 2006-03-26

The battery wouldnt charge at first and we sent the intial one back for replacement. The new one wouldnt charge either. This seems to be a common problem for this item, but we tried watching a movie with the player plugged in and it worked fine. We then discovered that the player would then charge. We havent had any problem getting it to charge since. With this problem resolved the player has been great! Very light weight and easy to use. My son loves it...makes car trips much less boring.
Battery     On: 2006-03-26

Tried to watch a DVD with the battery fully charged and found that there is no way to watch a complete movie without recharging the battery. Battery life should be longer.
Looks great...but     On: 2006-03-16

I purchased two of these - one for each child. We charged them the recommended time before use. Neither of them worked, so we charged them again, this time overnight. They still did not work. I have to say, though, that they did work when plugged in. My kids really liked them - they come with the cool carrying bag and they are easily handheld. But if they only work while plugged in, they were not very portable and did not fit our needs. I ended up purchasing some Axion units, which are not handheld and actually more like little laptops, but they work well enough.
I did encounter the same recharging problems and ...     On: 2006-03-08

Just do what was mentioned below by the other reviewer. Plug in the DVD with the power switch on and watch an entire movie (90+ minutes). After doing this, remove the plug, turn the POWER switch OFF, then start recharging it. Once you do this, it keeps the charge for up to 2+ hours. Also, I noticed that I encounter the recharging problem when I recharged it with the power switch ON (which usually happens if my stop arrives first before the end of the movie and I throw this into my bag and forget to turn the player off), and then turn it off later thinking that its the only way for this to take the charge (this is like 2 secs to 5 minutes after realizing I left it on, not the entire 90+ minutes like the resolution above). THAT is when it starts crapping out and only recharges up to a certain point. Just do the process mentioned above again. Total pain if it happens. But Ive never had a problem whenever I remember to turn it off before recharging. My friend calls it a battery memory problem. No idea how or why but there is something about it (he read about this apparently - geek).

If not for the recharging issue, I would have given it five stars. But when its working, definitely worth it! Very light (however you will feel the disk turn if you are holding this). Plays MP3s and shows JPG pictures which I burned on my dvds. Sound quality using earphones... amazing! You can adjust the brigthness of the pictures. Screen is a bit small for closed caption but can be considered a good size for plain viewing.

All in all, this is a great product, especially for the price.

Battery Won't Charge     On: 2006-02-21

My husband loves this DVD player but the battery wont charge. Its frustrating. I would not recommend this item.
Mine wouldn't charge either     On: 2006-02-05

I also had trouble with the first one charging so I sent it back and now the second one wont charge either. What a pain! The product is great but if it wont charge, I cant use it on airplanes. Will try to find another brand without this problem.
Battery wont charge     On: 2006-02-05

I did like the features of it being handy, compact, small and with clear crisp colored picture, but the problem with this product is it defeats its purpose of having a portable DVD because the built in rechargeble battery does not charge. I bought one, recharged it for eight hours as the instructions says, the first charge played the DVD for 10 mins then it crapped out.Attempted to charge it again but the charge indicator should be on while it charges but it wont light up. Returned the first one and got a replacements but same problem with the second.I was very frustrated.I returned the product. Also, this D1420 player, does not have a tracking that will let you go directly to the part of the movie where you last viewed, instead you have to go to the menu and select the chapter/part of the movie you like to watch, that will make you watch the entire part again instead of just going to the scene where you last viewed.I would not recommend this product to anyone.
This is a great portable player for the price, but     On: 2006-01-25

I had a similar problem with getting the rechargeable battery to take a charge. I sent the first one back, and the replacement had the same problem. I know some of these batteries have memory problems,so I just played 4 movies in a row with it plugged in. Apparently it slowly charged the battery , because it now works fine, and will play for almost 2 hours on a charge. Just needed to kickstart it. Great picture, and sound is awesome with headphones. Nice package with the case, and auto adapter.
Have tried 2 and can't get the battery to charge     On: 2006-01-06

I am on my second Audiovox D1420 (returned the first). Neither would take a charge. Opened the first one on Christmas morning and I was a excited to try it out - popped in a DVD and before giving a full charge (used the power cord) so I thought maybe that caused the dead battery problem, but when I got the second one I plugged it in right out of the box and was sad to see that the "charge" light went off within 1/2 hour. I left it to charge overnight anyway (and I used a different outlet in a different house than the first). Next morning I put in a DVD - sadly, the thing crapped out after about 3 minutes.

This is a big disappointment for my daughter as it was a gift from Santa and she really loves it. Works great while plugged in but that sort of defeats the purpose of having a portable unit so I am afraid we are going to have to find a different brand/model. I love the screen on the outside so the lid is closed when viewing but because of the battery Im sorry to say I cant recommend this.

Also I tried to call Audivox for help but I could never get a live person on the phone. I got frustrated and just asked Amazon for a replacement but now I have the same problem. Battery is not replaceable either... Very disappointed.
Does More Than I Expected     On: 2005-12-27

When I bought this I was hoping it would play mp3 from DVDs, though it only advertises mp3 CD. It does, handling the DVD just as it would a CD (full directory access and automatic progression between songs). Now I can carry all the music I want during a trip on a single disk. It also plays DVD video just fine from either burned DVD-R or DVD+R disks. The picture is good for such a small screen. The only odd thing is that it is not set for optimum viewing straight-on. The unit needs to be tilted slightly downward. Presumably thats to allow for it sitting on a surface below eye-level. A (minor) quibble is that it is a bit thicker than the photo would suggest. The battery pack is mounted external to the shell within the rubber casing that surrounds the player. It bulges from the back of the unit. Overall the unit is still fairly compact, but a bit big for a briefcase. To me, the flexibility of media options outways the slight extra bulk.
Not sure if I will keep it     On: 2005-11-19

Just got it and Im not sure if I will keep it. The buttons are all in different awkward places, including the manual "open" for putting in the DVD. The "joystick" button for moving thru on- screen menus is hard to use and very annoying. There is no remote control. You have to buy your own cable if you want to connect to a TV; i could swear the description I had read said it was included (it was probably last years description). I ordered silver, and received blue, though thats ok with me. (Had I known pink was available, I would have gone for that. And note some versions come with free headphones at no additional cost). I think the speakers are awful - sound tinny and intrusive- ive known transistor radios with better speakers and may connect it to my I-Dog instead. But the screen is sharp and crisp with flexible controls for brightness and contrast (if you dont mind using the annoying "joystick", so if thats the most important thing and perhaps only important thing for a viewer, only then would I recommend this. The flip up stand is useful.
For the price it's the most satisfying portable player ever.     On: 2005-11-05

Great design-has desk stand built in. Screen quality very good for the size. Built in speakers are above average. For better sound use headphones or get a small FM transmitter and send the audio to your table radio/stereo system. Battery life could be better at only 2.5 hours. DC/AC adapter included. All in all its the most versatile design Ive seen in a portable player. Makes a fantastic gift or buy it for yourself. You probably deserve it.
No remote and carry-case not mountable     On: 2005-10-28

I just received mine. Its great.

However, contrary to Amazons "Product Information", there is NO "full function wireless remote" included. And (also contrary to Amazons info), the "nylon carry case thats mountable to a car headrest" is surely NOT mountable to a car headrest (unless you have x-ray vision to see through the nylon).

Id very much like to know whats going on. Is there some NEWER version of this product with these features, and Amazon sent me an old one?
Cute Little Portable DVD Player     On: 2005-09-25

I bought this to use on our trip since we have a 4 hour plane ride. The screen size is smaller but I love the compact size ... almost like a portable cd player. The resolution is excellent and the sound quality is better than most. I wish the battery wasnt built in so I could use a second battery but it is rechargeable. It comes with the car adapter and plugs to use on a regular tv so all around I think its sweet for the $119.00 cost. Most players you cant touch for under $200.
