Great Speaker in a smaller package     On: 2008-07-12

I recently upgraded the hub of my ent. center with a new Pioneer VSX-92TXH AVR unit. Since this unit is capable of 7.1 surroud output I started looking for speakers to add to my existing 5.1 setup. I went to several stores in my area (Best Buy, Circuit City, Magnolia) and listened to several models. My criteria for a purchase was that the speakers had to be of quality build and sound, but also small enough to mount to my wall. This proved harder to find than I had anticipated, as most speakers that put out the sound I was looking for came in larger bookshelf styles, and all other satellite style speakers only came in HTIB (Home Theater In a Box) setups. I turned my attention to the internet and began searching. The problem I have with buying speakers outside of a showroom is that I cant hear them prior to purchase, but with most reputable sellers offering no-hassle return policies these days I thought I would take a chance.

After some searching and seeing all sorts of speakers from all over the price spectrum, I found these BA speakers. My 5.1 setup is mostly Sony, save for my center channel, which I upgraded last year to a Boston Acoustics 2-way for better clarity and midrange. I have been extremely happy with that piece, so in turn trusting BA hardware, decided to give these a try. It should be noted that I ordered these directly from OneCall. I had a question in regards to wether these were sold as a pair or as a single piece, and after I couldnt find any sort of phone number for cust. service on Amazon I went straight to OneCall and ended up placing my order with them because they were so helpful. Shipping took three days and I had a FedEx tracking number that same day I placed the order. (They are located in Spokane, WA. so time cutoff is 3pm PST for same-day processing). And for anyone wondering, these are sold as single units, so the price of $59 reflects one, not a pair.

Here is what I found after they arrived and were unboxed. The speakers themselves were a bit larger than my existing Sony satellites but almost double the weight. Build quality is very solid. Since these include midrange drivers I was pleasantly surprised to find openings on the rear of the unit to allow for adequate air movement, something I was only used to seeing on subwooofer enclosures. Speaker terminals are heavy duty screw binding post type with gold plating. These speakers also include a wall mounting bracket. For the price of these though, dont expect much. The bracket itself is a simple L-shape bracket with two machined holes in the back for the screws to attach to. The speaker itself sits on top of the bottom L portion of the bracket and is attached with a single bolt, allowing for a small degree of swivel if you choose to point your speakers towards the listening area. I chose to mount these using the bracket, but substituted the provided hardware with my own, using thicker screws with drywall anchors to ensure a snug fig that wouldnt sag after time. After all, these are a bit heavier for wall mountable units. Oh, one other detail. These speakers took the place of my existing front left and right surrounds, which I moved to the left and right surround middle positions.

After everything was installed and plugged in, I ran an automatic speaker calibration set-up through my receiver since I was now running 7.1. After that process finished, I previewed my new setup first with the Pod Race scene from Star Wars ep.1. Being a standard DVD I wanted to see how it handled 5.1 surround first. These speakers, driven through my new receiver, sounded great. The highs are crystal clear, and midrange is also noticeable, although I would still not rely on these to provide sub-bass level signals unless absolutely necessary. They are rated at 8ohms which worked perfectly since my receiver outputs 8ohms by default. I also had no trouble hearing sound output at low levels as well. Since I live in an apartment complex this is important, and these speakers sound great at both low and high levels. I previewed some BluRay movies with HD audio and they performed beautifully as well.

All in all, these speakers are a great buy and definitely a steal at the price. They actually perform so well that Im thinking I might just buy two more pairs and do away with the Sony satellites altogether. I recommend these speakers!
Decent speakers..     On: 2007-12-12

These speakers have good highs and mid range. I replaced 2 cheap Pioneer speakers with these and I saw a lot of difference. These are way better.

Rich and Clean sound     On: 2006-02-24

Listening to music is one of my hobby and so I am very choosey about speakers.

I owner Klipsch SF-II for 3 years but now I wanted wall mountable speakers. I listened to lots of speakers like bose, Definitive etc. I liked these one the best. They give very rich mid range and high frequency sound. Firstly I tried Boston micro 110x but 120x give much richer sound. It may be because my living room is big 15 x 20 feet so I need bigger speakers to give rich sound all over the room. Else 110x give very good sound too. It comes with wall mounting brackets so it save you atleast $10 or more. If buy just wall mounting brackets, they can run upto $70 plus they are ugly and mismatching.

I think the price is bit high. I am using velodyne woofer with these speakers and they make great combination.
