I spent last night setting up this machine. I want to use it to archive video tapes of the family and to record DVDs to watch on other players. The quality of the recording seems to be excellent on both -D and -DW and i was able to figure out many of the functions, though I found myself referring to the manual more than I usually do. There are impressive list of features that should satisfy most needs.
I have a couple of complaints. The DVD-RWs finalized versions do not consistently play in my other players, thought the DVD-Rs do. The menu of the finalized only displays a title and date. You have to painfully type in the titles. There is NO info on playing time indicated on the title and no thumbnail pictures that other recorders provide. Also, when the disc is inserted, it starts playing immediately, rather that going to the root menu - minor but inconvienent and not conventional. Even the JVC player seems unpredictable when I put in a finalized disc.
Playback is more limited, it seems, than most DVD players; ? slow motion, no step forward, no zoom. Fast forward is jerky, not smooth playback. Fastforward speed no indicated as X.
I really wanted to like this player and dont need the playback features but the playback title and incompatibility are problems. I will be returning it. On: 2006-11-19
The person who gave it bad reviews must have gotten a bad one as mine is outstanding""It plays dvds very well and it records better than anything else i have seen.i tried a panasonic first and it was horrible""i returned it and got the jvc.I agree with bradley, its a fine recorder. It records in 4 hour mode very good and sp mode is excellent"Highly recommended. I was looking for a dvd recorder to replace my old vcr machine.
After checking out consumer reports lastest ratings (March 2006 issue) on dvd disk recorders I almost went with their recommendation on the Panasonic. Before purchasing I read all of the internet reviews and decided against this machine. Seems that many users werent satisfied or content and some found the machines buggy. Instead, I went with this JVC - again, only after reading all of the internet reviews from others. Ive had this machine for almost a week and am thoroughly satisfied with this purchase.
This recorder writes to dvd-r, dvd-rw and dvd-ram. I have used the dvd-r and dvd-rw so far, but have yet to try the dvd-ram. As of yet, Ive beening recording with the sp(2 hr.) and lp(4 hr.) modes. Both recording modes look great! Consumer reports said that the JVC extended recording mode was only "fair". I disagree and find that using s-video from my satellite box gives me a really good recording, even in lp mode.
Disk finalization takes about a minute or two which is nice as Ive read that some machines take five to ten minutes to finalize a disk. You have to finalize a disk in order to play it on a different dvd player. I have successfully been able to play dvd-rs recorded on this machine on my Polaroid portable dvd player, so compatibility (for me) hasnt been an issue. Havent tried dvd-rws yet on the Polaroid.
There are many features that I havent used and doubt I ever will so I cant really comment on the extra bells and whistles.
Anyway, there arent many reviews on this machine so I hope this helps give you another opinion. I have to disagree with the previous reviewers and assume they got a bad unit. Pre-recorded (store bought) dvds look awesome on this unit. I found the best price at bhphotovideo.com. On: 2006-03-04
I bought this DVD recorder thinking it would be great with progressive scan and recording capabilities. When I watch anything with the recorder on the picture is washed out and pixels are visible. It also did not playback DVDs properly and had static like what you use to see with a vcr when the tracking was bad. After calling the service center, I was told to send it in with no reference number or form for me to send with it. I sent a detailed letter with the dvd and about a month later I recieved it back with no repairs done to it. I again called customer service and they told me they would have to call me back. I havent had a phone call yet and it has been two weeks. It is garbage and so is the JVC company and service center.
