I was looking into both Sirius and XM last month, and between their online free trials, I found Sirius to have much better programming. I wanted to find a receiver that would work both in my car and my home, so I came to Amazon to read the reviews. This radio had very good reviews, so I went ahead and bought one.
I couldnt be happier. The radio gets very good reception, both in the car and in my home. Hooking up the radio took very little effort, and the home installation didnt require looking at the manual. I was able to get reception even with the antenna in my window.
I was especially impressed with the reception in the car. Some of the streets I regularly drive down have a lot of tree coverage, but the signal has never gone out, not even skipping.
The display is large and very easy to read, and navigation is very simple.
I only have two minor annoyances with this receiver:
1. There doesnt seem to be an obvious way to open the setup menu from the remote, although you can use the remote to navigate the menu once its up. You can open the setup menu by hitting the "menu" button on the receiver.
2. The back button on the remote is in the lower left of the remote, which is an odd placement.
I would definitely recommend Sirius overall, and this receiver lived up to my high expectations. On: 2006-02-13
I love this unit in my home ran into free left and right rca inputs in my receiver. It works great and the station storage is easy to use. I am disappointed with it in my car. It broadcasts an FM signal to your car stereo and in my car the Kenwood deck has to be in one exact place to work at all and then the reception is poor. I just dont bother anymore and will get a separate car unit eventually. I wished I had saved some money and bought one without the car kit but I dont begrudge the cost since it works so well in the house. On: 2006-01-09
I bought this Kenwood Sirius car and home system and it is the best deal out there! Sirius provides much better content than XM in my opinion. So I went with this unit. (...).
Pros:
Very easy to read display. Very well made. Everything I would expect from satellite radio.
Cons:
FM modulator is poor(not a real problem I just plugged it in direct thru AUX input). No accessories out yet(Boombox Please!!!)
Heres a tip about the antenna for your car... Find anyway possible to put it on your roof as the directions state. I had the antenna on the trunk of my Integra and the signal would drop out for a second while going under overpasses and big trees. After moving it to the roof I have had much better reception! This is my first experience with satellite radio, and Im very pleased--the sound quality is fantastic (I live in an area which gets lousy FM reception, due to all the hills, so its a great relief to be able to get radio without static--or commercials). ESPECIALLY no commercials: Ive all but given up listening to the local classical station, which several years ago jettisoned the usual low-key FM classical commercials in favor of the speed-freak AM dj hardsell...and the contrast to the beautiful, relaxing music is just too weird to tolerate. So satellite is a godsend for serious music listeners--as long as Sirius keeps the music commercial-free!!
Kenwood has included everything you need for both auto and home installation (the reason it is on the expensive side, but well worth it). I got it mainly for home, where I have a very high quality audio system, and it is every bit up to that level: sounds as good as CDs, but with incredible variety of content. Girlfriend commented, "Its like going to a club...only without the crowds, the smoke, the drunks and the high drink prices." LOVE it! I ended up running the antenna to the roof, but I was surprised how well it did when just placed in a window.
The installation in my van was equally easy...and the reception was good enough with the antenna just placed on the dash, that Im not sure Ill bother with a roof installation. I may end up having my mechanic hardwire it into the battery, though, as Ill likely forget to remove the cigarette lighter plug, (since that doesnt turn off with my ignition, may run the battery down).
Learning to operate the radio took some study: navigating among 120-some stations is a challenge so they give you a number of ways to do it (the typical broadcast radio might get 10-20 stations, so you can use an analog dial to get around...but doing so with 10 TIMES that many would get unmanagable), but once you get the hang of it--particularly with 30 presets--its pretty easy.
Its a terrific little radio, and I highly recommend it. Kenwood has done a great job, and thought of everything you need for installation. On: 2005-10-18
Gotta love this thing! No complaints AT ALL!!! I even put my antenna on the dash of my car rather than running it to the roof and its still nice clear sound coming thru! I doubt Ill ever go back to regular radio. The song seek is a neat feature and easy to use. I guess the ONLY thing that would make it a better unit in my mind is a stronger fm modulator, it wouldnt make it across the room in my office, but I had a modulator I used w/ my laptop and just plugged that in to the unit and its fine... dont count on much range though! Id even recommend hardwiring it in the car unless you mount it fairly close to your head unit, but again, thats a SMALL issue if you ask me, reception and over quality more than make up for it! Product arrived promptly and in perfect condition. We love the Sirius Satelite system. We never listen to the radio any more! I purchased this for my husband for our anniversary and he had it hooked up in less then an hour of receiving it. He is constantly listening to the NFL stations and all the games. The instructions on Sirius were great in helping direct the antenna for the house unit. There have been no issues with signal connection. I would highly recommend this unit.
