I chose this product after reading many different reviews online. Needless to say that I was not disappointed in the sound quality or the volume. The thing projected so well we used it for our wedding reception instead of renting sound gear, and it work much better than expected. Loud enough when time dictated, and soft with enough power. Plus, youre probably not going to find a better price then on here. There are slots of D batteries, but I havent used that function yet. On: 2008-09-06
The IM7 rips to shreds any other speaker system I have ever owned - that INCLUDES a few Logitech 2.1 systems Ive used for my dorm - that also includes my roommates Harman Kardon and Sony 2.1 systems.
This bad boy fills my entire 35X25 dorm up no problem, even with a crowd of loud, drunken Wellesley girls. The bass is unexpectedly full, loud, and bumping. The main speakers hit the highs, mids, and lows no problem. Hip Hop sounds AMAZING on the IM7.
I bought the speakers with the carrying case and WILL DEFINITELY be taking it to a few hotel room parties with me and overseas for Spring Break.
As for problems with the dock or the ipod freezing - my best advice is that if you have a more recent Ipod model you should be fine - the newer hard drives can deal with the BASS BUMPING intensity of this speaker system. The remote control is weak, but I could honestly care less.
I give this speaker system 5 out 5 shot glasses - definitely a must buy, oh and did I forget to mention that its PORTABLE!!! On: 2008-08-31
This is one of the most amazing audio system for ipod that I ever have, I recomended 100%. On: 2008-08-30
Great way to enjoy or share your idpod collection of tunes. V. good sound quality for the money. Recommend getting the carrier for it also for easy transport. We looked at other more expensive ways to to the same thing and glad we saved the money! On: 2008-08-16
I have had this for 3.5 years and the sound is AMAZING! My first unit had blown speakers and had to be returned (back @ Xmas 2005). This second unit has been old faithful. I now use it via Aux. Jack for my Zune and I charge my ol Ipod at the same time. Remote is great. Well made. Only thing, the Ipod Nano does not fit even with adapter. So, for Aux use or old Ipods this is grrrrrrrrrrrrrreat! On: 2008-08-15
I bought this unit not only for a playback instrument for my Apple Touch, but also for a speaker for my Apple laptop. On both accounts, it is everything I wanted it to be and I would recommend it highly.
The sound on this product is excellent. I was uncertain that the bass would meet my expectations but found it to be excellent. Adjustments to your sound preferences are easily made with the remote. The feel of the iM7 is solid and is not flimsy. Volume control is excellent, however, bass with bottom out with very loud volume settings. For "normal" listening levels, this is an excellent player.
Nice feature: Charges your Apple while listening.
Note, if you have a Apple Touch, the front door will NOT close as it will for the other Apple products. Adaptors are included for all Apple units, but Altec has not fitted this unit for the Touch. So, I just leave the door open or I hook it up using an aux cord.
Great Sound - Great Value. On: 2008-08-11
Truly and amazing component by Altec Lansing. I may have regretted if I had invested over another product. I made a couple of purchases made by CREATIVE LABS and the blends were not so good. One of them, the Sub woofer was good and on the other the speakers were good and ended up returning the units that I bought.
Other than listening to music with your Ipod docked, this is an excellent unit for watching movies. It gives you the best surround sounds that you can think of on a small unit like this, and I just love the tiny remote on this unit. I have connected my MP3 player, the IPOD and recently I connected my DVD player too to the IM7. My neighbor thinks that I have bought a home theater by Bose and Im yet to tell him what I have at home. The side firing sub-woofer could shake thinks inside ur home. what and excellent blend of highs, mids and lows...!!!!!
U DONT NEED AN EXPENSIVE SOUND SYSTEM IF YOU GOT AN IM7 @ HOME.
THANKS TO ALTEC LANSING.

I purchased the inMotion iM7 to replace the smaller, older generation Altec Lansing product which I was quite happy with. This new iM7 is simply superb! The sound quality is powerful and rich. I own a BOSE system, and this iM7 is a finer sound, and much, much more reasonable pricewise. It not only fills a room with total sound; but basically the entire house. The simple adaptability for all models of IPODs is very convenient. But, the best feature I think is the remote. Everything about this product is highly recommendable. The only draw back I would point out, and its minor, is its size; a little big. On: 2008-07-22
I am what my family calls a "techno-turtle" very slow to catch up with the latest electronics and there uses. So when I purchased an ipod and wanted a speaker system to go with it. I did some online research. This was the best reviews I saw for the money. Now that Ive used it I agree. I used it for a Fourth-of-July parade and the sound was great for those of us walking and anyone watching on the side of the street! I definitely recommend this system.

this thing sucks!!everytime I use it, I want to throw it out of my window!! On: 2008-06-18
the sound is fantastic..think weve lost the remote and that,s the only way to add bass..thats the only drawback On: 2008-06-12
This speaker system is the BOMB!!! The sound quality is almost as good as BOSE. The bass rocks!! Im from Hawaii so I purchased mine from Costco to save me shipping costs but Amazon has a pretty economical price on it. If you dont want to spend over $300 on a BOSE system, get this one, you wont regret it. Another + is that it is so portable. Also runs on battery or AC.
AWESOME!! On: 2008-06-11
I was really pleased with this from the word go. Sound quality and volume were great for the size and the price. Battery run is also a huge plus and I even used the line in to play CDs pretty frequently.
BUT....
it recently started acting unresponsive. The ipod seems to get a charge and is connected but the sound just isnt there. Its spotty. Ive unplugged it for a day or two, came back tried it fresh and it would work again great until I turned it off again. Next day just wont work. Im looking for a replacement right now.
All in all. It was great and I guess the timeframe is about what you expect these days from a product at this price point, but thats my real beef. i dont want to buy another of the same product knowing it will fizzle in 2 years time. On: 2008-06-11
I bought the Altec Lansing inMotion iM7 Portable Audio System as a present for my boyfriend. i decided to spend more money on a reputable company like Altec Lansing because i did not trust the many other no-name brand cheap mp3 docking stations. I spent over $200 with shipping and now have had multiple things break after only 1 year of use.
First, the automatically retractable cradle broke. Although the unit functions, the cradle no longer closes and leaves it looking very unsightly. When i looked inside, i saw that the cradle is held in by a small piece of very soft plastic, which no longer hooks only the back of the cradle. Although we were unhappy, the unit still worked so we continued to use it. Now the AC adapter no longer works. When the unit is plugged in, it does not charge the iPod nor turn the speakers on. I tried to use a universal adapter, but unfortunately the voltage and current requirements for the iM7 are so high that the universal adapter overheats after 1 hour of use.
I understand that the product only comes with a 1 year warranty, but it is ridiculous that such major problems would occur after only 1 year of infrequent usage. With such terrible quality issues on this iM7 maybe i should have gone with a cheap no-name brand.

I am loving this boom box! The Altec Lansing IM7. It has a nice deep, rich sound for such a compact unit. I was very impressed with the fullness of the sound quality. I use an Apple iPod, which this accomodates nicely with some adaptors. (provided in package) Apparently it will fit other brands or models with the other adaptors provided. I bought the optional shoulder harness by Altec Lansing as well and it was nice to have with the unit for carrying purposes, as the stock hand hold is a little akward to use. It is not the lightest box you will find, but I imagine packing in all that sound does take some equipment with some weight to it. It definately feels sturdy and well made. The only down sides I have noted so far is that it does not have a rechargable battery system. It is capable of using D size batteries (which will add more weight) but who likes replacing batteries all the time? The only other comlpaint would be the base footing is small and makes the unit easy to knock over if you are careless. Overall, I am very impressed with this product and would indeed recommend this system to anyone who loves music. On: 2008-06-08
I bought this player to give me an audio option for a classic car. It can only run on the batteries while in the car, and this was given very little thought by the maker. If you leave the batteries in the player, they will completely drain in a matter of 2-3 hours even with player COMPLETELY powered down. To preserve the batteries, I have to dislodge one D-sized battery in each battery bay (2 bays with 4 D-cell batteries each) to interrupt the circuit and prevent draining. Then, I have to put the batteries back in when Im ready to use it again. VERY inconvenient, but my use is somewhat unconventional. Sounds great, though. On: 2008-06-07
I was tired of changing CDs every hour so I purchased this unit to play with my iPod 5.5 Classic. The sound is great but the iPod freezes after every 4th or 5th song. I called Altec Lansing for help, but they just said to return it. On: 2008-05-30
I have a small portable ipod speaker system which was just fine for me, but not for my husband who likes big sound. This was a birthday gift for him and he LOVES it. On: 2008-05-29
Have no doubt whatsoever, this speaker system is incredible. When I first heard the clarity and volume of this unit it completely redefined my expectations of a unit of its size. The battery power option really adds to the versatility too - party music can be played for hours anywhere. The remote, international plugs for the AC adapter are all excellent added features.
However, after owning this unit for almost 2 years 2 annoying flaws surfaced.
1. The D sized batteries dont fit as snugly in the battery compartment as they should. As a result, a small bump on your speakers can cut the power. I mostly overcame this flaw with tissues in the battery compartment.
2. Over time the connector for the iPod will become loose. This results in an intermittent connection when you first place your iPod in the cradle and you have to wiggle on the cradle to get sound out of both speakers. This becomes increasingly annoying as the fault worsens over the life of unit. The fault is due to design of the cradle itself. Everytime you push on the cradle to release the iPod it bends the iPod against the connector.. eventually causing this intermittent one speaker problem.
Originally the im7 was designed for iPod G4 / Photo ~60 gb so the cradle best suits that formfactor iPod. The iPod video fits OK in the unit but noticeably not as well as with G4 iPods. Nanos and minis are most probably a considerably worse fit. Expect Altec Lansing to release an updated im7 quite soon.
Despite the downsides and the likelihood of a newer model I might purchase another im7 (in black) to replace my previous one which was stolen. Be careful buying these 2nd hand because the connector/cradle will have worn. On: 2008-05-17
I bought this for my son who was in the military in Iraq. He lived in a trailer type housing in the desert. He said dust got into everything. I heard the unit myself when he came home. The sound is terrific, especially for the size of the unit. It went all the way to Iraq and back and still works, even with the dust that undoubtedly worked its way into the mechanism. Highly recommended. On: 2008-05-07
I had a friend who bought this stereo and he loved it. I was even happier after I purchased it myself and was able to use it for what I wanted. I used it to play volley ball in an open court yard in my apartment complex, and the sound was awesome. I had no problem hearing it, and there is great base. The unit is very portable and easy to use. This is the best Ipod stereo I have every seen. On: 2008-05-02
based on research this was the highest rated speaker system for the price range. someone even said it sounds better than the much more expensive bose system. they were right. this system is great as an "ipod" boombox. the sound is awesome even at loud ranges. i teach group exercise classes outside and this system fits the bill! i have cranked it up quite loud and have not heard any distortion. also, the system is light and extremely portable with the recommended carrying strap. i agree with an earlier comment, however about the scratching of your ipod when being inserted or pulled out. that is the only reason i did not give it 5 stars. the unit that holds the ipod seems rather cheezy and is made of plastic. i use an older ipod so i am not concerned about the scratches but i do not use new ipods in the unit. On: 2008-05-02
I bought these speakers because I wanted music for our pool deck. My husband had purchased a Sony Walkman for my birthday, and I wanted something I could carry out to the pool (or anywhere around the house) and listen to my music. After reading countless reviews I chose the Altec Lansing iM7 primarily for their sound. They provide a deep, rich tone on all levels, and very little distortion when the volume is high. I wouldnt recommend these on a portability basis due to their wieght, but for around the house, they are perfect. They take 8 D cell batteries, or can be powered with an a/c cord. An excellent value for under $200. On: 2008-04-13
This thing is worth every penny. If you dont want to spring for a BOSE, this is your alternative. Absolutely devastating sound for its size....balanced and crushing bass. I am impressed every time I crank up the volume, and ive had this thing for like 2 years now. Its so portable, and so loud. I love it. On: 2008-04-08
I bought this back when it first came out to the market, over 2 years ago - I was sort of hesitant on purchasing something that cost as much as my iPod U2 edition. But once I plug in my iPod and turned up the volume...what can I say, I was impressed.
The bass was very good and the mids and highs were very good too for a system this small.
THe only thing that I wish A-L had done better was the thinking out of the remote and the angle necessary to activate it. Like it has been mentioned time after time - you almost have to be in front of the iM7 to activate the controls. If it was not for the remote - I would have gave 5-stars for the iM7.
Other than that - one hell of a unit and if you can find one on-line get it. On: 2008-03-31
I brought this for my sons birthday. We have owned one for about a year and a half and have loved it. Sounds great. Great to carry around places. On: 2008-03-24
I work in the music business and know good sound when I hear it. This unit is GREAT! Its not all about deep bass or crisp highs, its about everything between 20Hz and 20kHz! For a portable stereo with small speakers, this thing ROCKS! Theres no gaping hole at the crossover point and no ridiculous bass or treble boost. However, if you want more bass, thisll give it to you long after similar sized boxes are distorting like crazy!
The only drawback to the iM7 is you have to be careful with the iPod door. Ive read that other people have had theirs break on them and I can see why. Its not exactly fragile, but not sturdy either. Mine hasnt broken, but thats because I knew of the problem before buying. Even if it does break in the future, I wont mind too much because my ears have a higher priority and I LOVE how the iM7 sounds!!!
Sound is a very subjective thing. Get 10 different people, let them hear one set of speakers, and youll get 10 different opinions. Its because we all like different things and have different levels of hearing damage. Some people like lots of bass, some like lots of treble or midrange. It also depends on what kind of music you listen to most. The best thing to do is close your eyes and listen for yourself. If you dont know what good sound is, ask a friend who seems to know more about it. Dont ask a salesman because he/she just wants you to buy something.
If youre in the market for small, portable speakers for your iPod, DEFINITELY give Altec Lansings products a listen to!!! On: 2008-03-18
Yes, this product delivers excellent audio quality, but this product has a VERY SERIOUS FLAW in it that will DEFACE YOUR IPOD! We owned a 5th generation iPod in MINT CONDITION upon buying the Altec Lansing inMotion iM7. After only a few weeks of using the inMotion, the ENTIRE FACE of our iPod became COMPLETELY SCRATCHED UP and 100% UNREADABLE. Vertical scratches going up & down on the screen, and vertical scratches going up & down on the entire plastic face of the entire iPod. These scratches represent where the iPod slid into & out of the inMotion. The way that the inMotion is designed is that there is no way to insert your iPod into it WITHOUT getting the face scratched up by the sharp plastic that holds the iPod in place. BEWARE OF THIS PRODUCT AND AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS! This product destroyed our iPod -- it is unusable because we can no longer read the screen. BUYER BEWARE! On: 2008-03-17
This is a nice amp, very loud, clear, and bassy, for a reasonable price. the ipod is very protected, and does not shift or bend on the dock. the remote is kinda small and you have to aim at the player to use it, but the little clip-in storage niche helps to keep from losing it. The only dislike I have for the player is that the footprint is too small. if it gets bumped forward or backward it will roll right over due to its cylindrical shape. Just be careful around it when its near a ledge. You will need goof off to remove the sticker residue. Buy it if you want a straightforward, good quality amp for your ipod. On: 2008-03-12
I chose the Altec system over Bose and others, because of the reviews and price - and I have been extremely happy with my choice! The unit looks great, fits on my shelf, and simply does the job -- making clean, clear, high-quality sound.
I can listen to my iPod, but I also have the iM7 connected to my TVs audio-out -- which means I get GREAT audio from TV, DVDs and CDs (which I play through the DVD player). I have bulkier audio equipment and satellite speakers in storage (having just moved into a new house), but the Altec system gives me really good sound that fills the entire living room so well, that Ive decided to use this as the primary movie-sound system, and am leaving the other equipment in storage!
The sound is truly excellent, as has been noted here several times. The bass is nice and strong, the highs are crisp and clear (both of which are also adjustable by the way)... Overall, just a fantasic sound quality, all in a good-looking, compact (and more reasonably priced) package.
I do have one little "I would have designed it different" note. Since this is more of a feature-enhancement idea, rather than a complaint, it doesnt effect my overall 5-star rating:
Id like to see a Mute function, or faster volume-control response in this unit. I sometimes want to turn down the volume quickly (on any sound-making device) -- simply because the phone rings, or the kids are going crazy, or I just forgot to turn down the volume after playing my music really really loud yesterday :) Anyway, because this unit has push-buttons instead of a volume knob, and those buttons require a sustained or harder push (and the corresponding delay) before the units firmware can decide if you want a small incrimental or continuous change in volume (or tone, or whatever), theres really no way to change volume quickly enough. So, in case of "emergency" (you need to answer the phone or settle the kids), you just need to turn it off.
Again, the Altec iM7 is, as others have commented, the best value and quality, at a great price. Sure, you could go cheaper, but youd lose the quality in my opinion. Or, you could buy the most expensive Bose units, which really wouldnt give you much more than the Altec, in this niche... So, why spend more when you can spend less?
Great unit, and highly recommended! On: 2008-03-10
We have one of these and one of the $300 Bose iPod players. The sound of this model is way better in all ways over the Bose. The high notes are crisper, the lows are deeper, and the overall sound is richer, believe it or not. AND, the volume gets louder if necessary. We used if during a party and you would have thought we had a multi speaker, high quality stereo system playing. Its great that its so portable too. A bit heavy with all the batteries in but well worth it. Weve had ours for months and are now buying more for the kids. Its sturdy enough that we feel confident it will survive them and their friends! Enjoy! On: 2008-03-02
When I bought this as a gift for my wife about a year ago, I thought the door latch felt iffy. Sure enough, a few days ago it stopped latching, keeping the door open all the time. Bad design for sure.
Great sound with the unit, though. Fills a room nicely. The open door doesnt affect playing or charging; just irritating and doesnt look nearly as nice when using it for a dinner party.
Ill check the warranty, but I think its past. I might try removing the springs that force the door open. On: 2008-02-20
This machine is great. I originally bought the inMotion iM7 back when it was available at Best Buy and fell in love. After a year or so of hard love and a bad power outlet I needed to replace it. Best Buy no longer carries these great jam boxes. So I went through a Bose, JBL, and another type I wasnt familiar with. Was never happy with the replacements.
Amazon.com was a last resort. Thank goodness I found this guy again!
Here is the point;
*Great crisp sound when turned up loud.
*Low deep bass and an amazing treble
*Remote control
*If the bass is too much or there isnt enough treble, YOU can change the settings by remote
*Comes with a aux cable for plugging in anything that isnt iPod, listen to a laptop, a Walkman, a Zune, if it has a headphone jack you can plug it into the iM7
*Portable! With some D batteries you can take this bad boy to the beach and share you great taste in music with everyone.
*Tough. Ive dropped the iM7 once or twice and besides a little ding and a dent in the screen, it still plays like new.
*Cheap. For the quality of sound and control you have with this box you can pay up toward $300+ for any other machine that doesnt even come close to this awesome sound.
*Travel. iM7 comes with a set of different plug attachments for different parts of Europe, Japan, the world.
You cant go wrong with the inMotion iM7. I promise.

This Ipod dock was recommended by a friend. I was hesitant about getting an older, discontinued model as there are always better features on the newer models and its generally easier to replace a newer model than a discontinued one if something is wrong with it. However, I am so glad that I purchased the IM7. It sounds great! It sounds better than any of the ones I listened to in the store. The handle is a little awkward however I wont be moving it around frequently so for me I dont mind the discomfort of the handle so much. The sound is more important to me than what it feels like to carry it around. The design is wonderful too as the speakers wrap around the entire unit whereas most of the ones I looked only had the speakers on the front panels. Not only is it powerful but the clarity of the instruments is incredible. On: 2008-02-08
I bought this product to use mainly for blasting music on the bus for a way to pump me and my teamates up on the way to a game. The sound is great and the bass is very good as well. I did a lot of looking around on the different systems similar to this and this was the best one I found. It was on a great sale on here and was definetly worth every penny. It also can adjust to fit just about any ipod, EXCEPT for the ipod touch, but the ipod touch will work if you just tape the cradle closed. I also got the harness suggested on here to go with it and that works very nicely as well, its a nice snug fit and the buttons for volume and power are easily accessable while the harness is on. On: 2008-01-28
I bought this for my daughter 2 years ago for her iPod. It is fantastic. It sounds way better than other ones that her friends have. This is high quality sound, not tinny cheap crap. Its easily portable and looks cool too and it charges the iPod. On: 2008-01-28
This boombox is incredible. I have had it for over one year now and it continues to amaze me.
Pros:
-Unsurpassed sound volume. Not only is it LOUD, but it never distorts and is clear at ANY volume, none other deliver this
-Bass and Range is incredible, the Bass is powerful enough to deliver powerful bass throughout even a LARGE room.
-Compatable- this is compatable especially for any model ipod, HOWEVER, you can use it with any mp3 player, cd player, etc, etc, because of its AUX feature!
-Portable- Its tube design is small for the volume and quality of sound it produces, can add 8 D batteries for portable use (no AC)
I have brought this boombox to parties and houses with big cd changers or people with computer speakers and a sub and still blown them away.
Cons: I recommend buying the strap for it as it makes it MUCH easier to carry the box and the cords you can use with it.
-Short battery life, might be worth the money to buy 8 D batteries for one exciting day at the beach, but it wont last more than a few hours, especially with how much sound this thing puts out.
Buy it. On: 2008-01-22
I expected the Altec Lansing iM7 to be better than most iPod docking players but it has passed my expectations and then some. At less than half the price of Bose Sound Dock system,it truely delivers all the sound you need to a small or large room. Its a little larger than the Bose but it also contains two 4" inch sub woofers at each which bring on the rich bass sound. If you purchase this item you will not be sorry. Enjoy. On: 2008-01-20
Having heard this product because a friend owned one, I knew this is the one I wanted to purchase. The sound is increible and gets great reviews on ilounge. One of the best sounding docking stations on the market. But on to the BAD. My friend had to send his back because the door holding the IPOD was broken. When Altec Lansing received it they told him that they stopped making them and the simple part needed to fix it. I was told it was just with the generation 1 stations so I decided to purchase one. Right out of the box mine was broken. I had the EXACT problem and had to return it. These are not made anymore and if you have to send it back they will give you a lesser replacement. On: 2008-01-16
I wont repeat what has already been said. Suffice it to say: the sound on this thing is great, even at high volumes (my wife and I like to rock out when we paint or clean the house).
My biggest gripe -- the power adapter. I stepped on the adapter and broke the prongs off. I tried finding a replacement, but the 17volt transformer doesnt seem to be standard here in the US (or maybe just here in NJ! haha). eBay has had a few for sale -- specifically for the iM7 -- but they want 30-40$ plus shipping. Altec Lansing doesnt seem to have an option to purchase one on the site, either. I realize the convenience of the multiple adapters is great, but once it breaks you are in a tough spot. (And yes, I realize spending 30-40 is not much for a device thats worth close to $200; but I wish there was an easier way to replace it.) On: 2008-01-08
I wouldnt buy this product. The tool to make it able to properly secure your ipod didnt work. We tried two different Nanos and it wouldnt allow them to click in properly. The return to the company who shipped it hasnt been easy either. On: 2008-01-05
The sound is great on this thing. I hear aspects of the music I have not heard on my desktop system nor in my car. BUT, the door quickly picked up an issue whereby you have to jiggle the ipod around to get sound in both speakers. AND apparently there is some incompatibility between this model and some iPods, because mine will freeze fairly frequently when I use the unit (its never done that before), and I am not the only one.
On: 2007-12-29
A lot of reviews were correct about weight, lack of bass/treb controls on unit, etc... but bottom line is this unit has a great sound with good bass reproduction and is portable with shoulder strap & handle. I did have to request a 2nd gen nano adapter which I am waiting for because it does not come with the unit. On: 2007-12-29
This iPod music box sounds great! Good base, good highs and mids. The music it plays is very very good for the price of the unit. Dock well with my 5th gen iPod 30GB and my iPod Nano as well. The remote however is lacking in what it can do. If you have a large number of songs on the iPod (everyone does!) then selecting a song or playlist requires you to do gymnastics to try and change things on the iPod itself - the remote is really only for Play/Pause, and volume control. The number of batteries (and expense) pretty much make this music box only good for plugging into a wall socket for me. Nice idea, but too expensive to make practical.
Overall, I think it is a great portable music system for those times where more than one person wants to hear music from an iPod. On: 2007-12-26
The Altec Lansing IM7 speaker system is the "biggest bang for the buck!" It is wonderful sound for such a portable system. The volume and richness of the bass is incredible for such a small, light package. It is very versatile. On: 2007-12-22
I am very pleased with the sound produced by this unit! Sound is rich and full. No distortion when the volume is cranked. Wish I had bought this much sooner! On: 2007-12-17
why is amazon harassing me to review this product? i get an e-mail at least twice a week asking me to review it. why? On: 2007-12-15
excellent sound, easy to use. treble and bass are hard to adjust because you can only adjust using the remote. there is no guage. works just as well with 110 or battery. On: 2007-12-08
Although I love the look and the sound blew me away, I am very disappointed the sturdyness of the iM7. After a few months the latch stopped working. They discontinued making them so I have to chose between them replacing with an iM9, which I hear doesnt have the same sound quality or an M602, which isnt portable like this one. I wish I read these reviews before making my selection. If anyone knows how I can fix the latch myself..Id be grateful. On: 2007-12-04
I just set up my IM7 and when I tried to actually put my 2nd gen nano in the dock with the adapter I found that it DOES NOT FIT!
Apparently this is a known problem, as they will send you a proper adapter that actually works, if you complain and pay $3 for shipping, or so I read on an online review of the IM7.
A small amount, but its their screw-up, I shouldnt have to pay anything. You would think out of courtesy they would send it to you for free, esp. since this is a known problem they just havent bothered to fix because they apparently dont care about their customers enough to fix it, theyre happy to keep charging $3 extra and making people wait before they can actually use their machine they paid for.

I looked and listened all over for a quality ipod portable and had real trouble. I took home and returned puchases from ihome etc. Then I heard awesome sound coming out of my neighbors garage and could not believe it was this little portable. Amazing sound, and I have over 20K in my home 2 channel system. Plus it has a video out to play the movies I download on my big screen. This interface alone usually costs $125. I got my Altec im7 for that. A steal - get one before they stop making it. On: 2007-11-25
A very good sounding unit, but discontinued so you cannot get warranty service. On mine, the door broke(as is common). I sent it in, but Altec says it is discontinued, so I can choose another like the im9 or m602? They are not in the same class(or price) in my experience. I will try to get my money back, it is simply unacceptable service. So if you buy one of these now, hope it doesnt break because you wont get another one. On: 2007-11-17
This has to be the best iPod player. The sound is full and fills the room. The base is impressive. You will love this product! On: 2007-11-14
I absolutly love this ipod speaker. Its sound is crystal clear, and its soo easy to use. Ive taken it out places and people around me are always asking where I got it from. Since ive had it I know two people who have brought it after hearing it from me. It truly sells itself. On: 2007-11-12
The Altec Lansing inMotion iM7 is fantastic. Great sound for indoors or outdoors. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting full sound from their iPod or MP3 music collection. On: 2007-10-30
I bought this for my wife and she loves it. A good value for the money. The sound quality is much better than I expected for the price. The ability to use batteries with it is also a plus. On: 2007-10-28
I was looking for a boom box to use while tailgating at my daughters fall softball games. The most important thing to me was the ability to run on batteries and it had to be loud. Well, it delivered. Fall softball is now over, but my son and I use it in our basement gym while working out. I read a bunch of reviews and some of the people were complaining about the lack of this feature and that feature. Overall, it is a great machine that gives one portability and great sound from your iPod. Anyway, who doesnt have an iPod? The only complaint I had was it did not come with an adaptor to play my second generation iPod nano. Altec Lansing has a link on their website where I entered my information and I had it in three or four days--shipped for free. On: 2007-10-26
I have had this since July 07 and I have three words to say: "FAB U LOUS"!
Fantastic sound, just the right size, great for carrying around and to the dock while you swim, or even in the boat.
I have 0 complaints and have had 0 problems with anything at all, other then the remote blowing away because I stuck it in a baggie on the dock and the wind grabbed it. Next time Ill put a rock in there with it!
Its a darn nice piece of equipment and especially at this price! I had it in two days from Amazon. On: 2007-10-25
I will tell you the secret behind these suckers. People probably give this thing some bad ratings due to personal experience, & thats all you can go by.
If you need some speakers that are going to kick out some MAJOR sound, then these are for you. You can hook them up to your TV (if it has the headphone jack), your CD player, any mp3 player, & of course, the ipod can fit right inside. Of course, the iPhone and the new ipods do NOT fit in it, so you have to try to work with that one on your own conscience. I will say though that these speakers are the bomb. Just turn em up and in my personal promo for ipod, LET THE MUSIC PLAY. On: 2007-10-25
What a sound! Can be heard from the second floor all the way down to the basement. That can be good and bad...depending on who is home and whose Ipod is being played. :) Great sound balance, ipod mechanics are slick, remote could be more sensitive but not a huge factor. A great birthday gift...sometimes a difficult feat for a parent of teens. On: 2007-10-22
Purchased in September 2007, the speakers on this device produce an excellent sound with good bass and mid range. It has heaps of extra fittings so that different sized ipods work with it. Especially handy for me as i have a mini and a classic ipod. Highly recommend for its price On: 2007-10-22
This is a great speaker system for the iPod. The adapters easily accommodate several different types of iPods. In addition to providing great sound it can also act as a video dock for your video iPod. It protects the iPod well while allows for easy portability. On: 2007-10-18
i just got my second iM7 in the mail yesterday. this is a great product, and i cant recommend it highly enough. why?
well, i needed a small unit that i could dock my ipod to, and it had to have excellent sound. after kind of skimming over the cheaper units out there, i thought i was going to have to go w/ the bose sound dock. i was ready to pull the trigger, and hadnt seen the iM7 in stores, but then i came across it here. the overwhelming number of good reviews, combined with the fact that it costs half as much as the bose, convinced me to roll the dice.
its as good as everyone says. the sound is fantastic - better than the bose, and you can adjust the bass and the treble to boot. the sound really fills the room as well - if i turn this thing up, it basically fills the entire floor of my house. really impressive, and absolutely no complaints.
my wife has the newer generation nano, and the iM7 did not come with an appropriate adapter for it. i went to the altec lansing website and they sent me one for free. took two seconds to order it, and we had the adapter in a few days. good service.
this product also comes with the ability to line in other sound sources, meaning you could just line your ipod right into it from the headphone jack if you wanted to. or you could line in your TV or other sound source. (maybe even a cd player if youve still got one!) you can also use the iM7 to line out images to your television from your ipod... just as an added bonus. (it also comes with a ridiculously wide array of international plug adapters, so if you want to bring it along with you on your trip to nepal, go nuts.)
altec lansing gives you an additional year of warranty coverage if you return the warranty card that comes with the stereo. another nice feature.
finally, the product is solid, well built, doesnt take up much space, and looks good. the only thing i would request is that they make a version in black, but thats a pretty minor complaint.
i was so impressed by the iM7 that i bought a second one for my bedroom. ive got two now, and still havent spent as much as i would have on the bose sound dock. cant recommend this product enough... well done. On: 2007-10-18
Its awesome. The volume range is great. It is easy to use and sound quality is better than I ever hoped for. I would definitely buy it again! On: 2007-10-18
My husband bought this portble speaker system for me for my birthday about a month ago and I LOVE IT!
The sound is awesome, the remote is great, and it looks go cool! I really like the adjustable treble and bass - a must! Altec Lansing was very prompt in sending the Nano 2nd Generaltion adapter after I requested it off of their website. A great product! On: 2007-10-15
I dont understand why peoples reviews of this dock are so positive. I bought this because of the high ratings and because it was cheaper than the Bose system my boyfriend wanted me to get. But when I got it home I discovered the sound quality was awful, tinny and weak. We returned it immediately and bought the Bose, and the difference was outstanding! Its possible we had a defective machine, otherwise I cant believe people would rate this thing so highly. But if I were you, Id check out the Bose Sound Dock first. Not only does it have exceptionally great sound, but its sleeker and lighter and all around designed better. On: 2007-10-10
This product has excellent sound and when purchased in conjunction with the strap is very portable. The only downside would be the inserts for making the different sized IPods fit leave too much room for error. It just requires a little more attention when connecting an IPod. I would recommend the purchase of this product to anyone looking for big, crisp sound from your IPod. On: 2007-10-09
I bought Altec Lansing IM7 to replace my broken bookshelf stereo. I have read very positive reviews of its sound quality online. I am satisfied with this product and especially enjoy its portability. I can connect not only my ipod, but also radio, CD player, cassette player to it, and make these once retired appliances, CDs and tapes useful again. On: 2007-10-03
I may be the first review using this system for a non-ipod.
I bought this unit after looking over my options. I came to
the conclusion this would be the best speaker system for my
Sansa M250. I have to use the AUX input but thats OK.
If you want some great sounding speakers simply buy this
unit!!!!! On: 2007-09-24
Sometimes iPod earbuds just wont cut it. I searched long and hard for a "boom box" as a companion to my video iPod. The iM7 appeared to be the best value for the price, and when I got it I was amazed. Particularly, I have a jazz tuba album that I love. It was okay through earbuds, but exquisite through the strong, mellow bass of the iM7. A better test I could not imagine.
I like the option of batteries or AC plug, and I bought 8 D-cells + recharger from Amazon that have saved me significant $$ ( 8 D-cell alkalines are pricey and only last for ~10 hours.) Rechargeable NiMH D-cells make environmental and economic sense.
Potential buyers should be aware that the remote control has limited function. To access all functions, one must operate the iPod itself. The instructions for the iM7 are short and dont explain odd behaviors such as why the iM7 will sometimes remember the last song you were playing in iPod before insertion, and sometimes default to the first song in the library...and start playing the whole library. Altec Lansing tech support via email was unable to explain it. They said to send the unit in. However I did not, as it may just be a design flaw. The tech support I received was pretty lightweight, but at least they were contactable and were willing to offer some solution.
For those who are easily frustrated by less-than-perfect retailing, there was one odd event associated with my purchase of the iM7: the first one I got was clearly an "open-box" product. It worked fine, but the styrofoam packaging inserts were quite broken up and the adapter plug for the USA was missing. I tried to get just the tiny adapter plug sent to me, and Amazon was unable to do that. Meanwhile I tried it out on battery and I knew that it was a "keeper"...it sounded great. Eventually, I had to send the entire product back just to get the tiny USA plug piece for the AC adapter.... Amazon shipped me an entirely new one. The new one had the adapter, but it did not really appear to be new, it looked like a demo model.
My conclusion was that somewhere in the supply chain, open-box or demo units were being funneled in as new merchandise.
As I live in the Virgin Islands from which shipping is inconvenient & expensive, I made a decision to just keep the unit and enjoy it. After all, it works and has a full warranty.
The iM7 does for me exactly what I wanted it to do: It fills a room with big, rich sound from an iPod, on either battery or AC current.
And Amazon works with me when theres a problem, until its fixed...thats why I look to Amazon first when buying something on-line. On: 2007-09-20
I did a fair amount of research on this since sound quality is so important. I was between the newer Harmon Kardon and this one. I chose right! I really like where the ipod rests as it is easy to see the screen. This is great for my kids who like to watch the ipod shows I have on it. SOund is amazing for the size and it easily fits into my decor.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars is the ipod will shut down and is hard to reboot if it is not turned off before the power to the unit is turned off. This may be a malfunction of the ipod, but it is annoying. On: 2007-09-18
I read the other reviews and thought this product must be amazing but it is only really good. It has good sound and great electrical connections. It has power plugs for almost every country. It also has a good interface with the iPOD. The drawback I had was that it did not have an adapter for the iPOD Nano gen2. You have to send away for it.
The shipping and ordering were first rate. I recommend this product to others but if you have a gen2 nano, you will have to go through the hassle of ordering the adaptor. On: 2007-09-18
Just got this, and decided on it over the Bose Sound-dock because of its versatility. Unlike the Bose, it has two video outs (both composite and s-video--so I can play my ipod on my tv), and more importantly an auxiliary in-port, so I can play other devices, such as my TV, which has satellite radio through DishNetwork, through the speakers. Likewise, I can hook it up to my computer, to another mp3 device, etc.
Unfortunately, the device does not have the same audio clarity as the Bose. At half the price (at least when I bought it), its not a bad deal. Audio wise, what I miss most is the clarity in the treble. The bass and treble are "adjustable" via the remote control, yet at softer sound levels, the treble mellows, dulls out and is subsumed into the midranges. On some songs, I miss the high treble crispness that youd hear on a good tweeter or even on the Bose. Lyrics and voices can get a little muddy, and dont quite seperate from the midrange sound as they could. The sound definitely improves if the unit is placed at ear level or above, as opposed to a lower table or surface.
At louder volumes, the clarity is better, but I live in an apartment, so am trying to stay on my neighbors good side, so cranking it up isnt always an option. On: 2007-09-15
This is a great audio system. I have had a few issues with setting the ipod in correctly but that is just user error i guess. I wish there was a FM tuner and I wish the remote worked from distances further than 10 feet. Other than that I would recommend it because the sound quality and bass are awesome. On: 2007-09-13
I am amaze with the big sound of this little thing. Is so deep that you wont believe that the sound is coming from this speaker. There are two things I think Altec lansing should improve. One is the quality of the flip door for the ipod, is too fragile. And the other one is that there are no indicators were you can see the volume level you are operating. Overall I am very happy with this product. On: 2007-09-12
Like many of you looking for a good speaker system for your iPod, I did a lot of shopping around. For the price of these speakers, the sound quality is good, the bass is excellent, and it comes with several cords to help you get started. My only complaint about this set is that my Nano wont fit in the attachment cradle, so I just attach it without. Its not as stable, but it still connects so Im happy. You could easily spend three times the amount but the speaker quality youd be getting isnt noticeably greater. A great buy, especially at a great price! On: 2007-09-11
The iPOD fit securely into the iM7 player, no chance of it becoming disconnected while carrying. The sound is very good and crystal clear even at very high volume. The unit is solid and very heavy for its size; a fold down handle would be better than the existing finger grip. This grip makes it very uncomfortable to carry any distance limiting its portability.
The remote control will not work when more than 15 feet away. If you are more than at a 45 degree angle to the face of the player the distance the remote will work is much less. Although there is a treble and bass adjustment on the remote there isnt anyway to view the levels on the player. Thus if someone else adjusts these levels you have no way to readjust back to the original levels except by ear.
I bought it in part due to its DC portability. 8 D-Cell batteries are required. My original batteries didnt last, but that may have been because they were old. I seem to be having better success with some new batteries I just installed.
For my purpose, great sound on the patio using batteries, it was a pretty good choice. On: 2007-09-11
The unit works very well with the Ipod. Great sound! Portable, easily carried out and used on battery power. Looked at all! Bought this one. A satisfied customer. On: 2007-09-09
I just received my IM7 and I couldnt be more impressed with this product. I bought the Bose system for Christmas last year and returned it because I was not satisified with the quality or the hefty $300 price tag. The sound from my IM7 is unbelieveable and the price is more afforable. If you are looking for portable Ipod audio, then this is the system for you. On: 2007-09-02
You will not be disappointed. The sound this delivers is outstanding. My friends are jealous because they paid more for a similar design and poor sound quality. On: 2007-09-02
Fantastic sound reproduction at any volume. Deep bass and delicate trebles, faithful mid notes. Small footprint makes it ideal for office, desktop or bookshelf use. Very favorably compares to Bose Sound dock and beats it on price. If you bought it, you wont be making a mistake! On: 2007-09-02
Save yourself the extra expense for the Bose system and buy this one. This stereo wont disappoint! The bass sounds terrific and the portability makes it convenient and fun to take with you from room to room. Excellent investment overall. On: 2007-08-31
I love the sound this puts out, its perfect for the urban girl or guys apartment, not too loud to disturb your neighbors, but still good for a small-medium sized party. definitely would meet the standards of someone like me who loves music and nice sound but isnt a total expert in sound quality. On: 2007-08-29
I highly recomend this product, sound is great! it just plain rocks!!! trust me, you wont be dissapointed! On: 2007-08-26
Hi,
I bought this for my wifes birthday.
She slipped her 30 gig 5th generation Ipod in and it has worked great ever since.
No lockups as some reveiws complain about.
And the remote works fine too.
The main thing is the quality of the sound it is really good.
Granted you cant fit it in your pocket, but it is no bigger than most small boom boxes out there.
Also in order to get the the great base sounds it still requires a large magnet and the expansion tube to produce it.
So if this unit is for home or office use, it simply can not be beat.
However if you want a player to stick in your backpack you may want to
get a smaller set of speakers for your mp3.
I have a Sandisk Sansa C140 MP3 player and loghtech MM28 speakers after
getting a ---.com credit card and using google checkout I wound up with the grand sum of $5.00 in the system. And for my money it is all I need for music around the campfire.
Well I hope you find this review helpful.
Thank you! On: 2007-08-23
My living room is acoustically live enough that listening to audio from the TV loudspeakers is unsatisfactory. To overcome this problem Ive placed the iM7 on a coffee table in front of the couch where we watch. The iM7 is fed from the TVs auxiliary output and the TV speakers are muted.
Its wonderful! Speech and music are beautiful. Bass is good for a unit this small. The remote volume/treble/bass control is a plus. Its a good value for the money. On: 2007-08-17
Great system, a little on the expensive side, but the sound is worth the price. For a relatively small system, it gets really loud and is plenty clear. When compared to the Bose Sound Dock, this one blows it away. Lots more bass with the iM7 and its less expensive. A good system for a room, probably too much for an office/computer desk. On: 2007-08-16
We really like this and use it alot.
seems like very good quality.
But what do I know, I am just a mom. On: 2007-08-16
This product has great sound quality. I wish it had an alarm on it but other than that it is a wonderful product. On: 2007-08-15
This speaker system sound very good even at high levels it still stays crisp, and great bass On: 2007-08-14
Absolutely amazing sound. Very deep bass, and sounds like a much more expensive and larger system. Place it in a corner and you will be amazed at how even more expansive the sound is. The sound is even impressive outside too...way more than a "boombox" On: 2007-08-14
Having debated for a while whether to purchase this sound system or the Bose one, I think Im probably going to buy this one. My only question is: is this compatible with the new 80GB video iPods, or even the 60GB ones?
On: 2007-08-13
good product
delivers what is promises
controls are inadequate but still worth the money On: 2007-08-11
This system is amazing. If you are a child of the 80s, you will no doubt remember someone walking down the street listening to a boom box held on their shoulder.
Fast forward to 07....if someone were to try that with this, his head would jettison and become a missle, shooting sideways right off his shoulders!
The sound on this thing is wicked awesome. The remote works well and stores neatly in the back of the unit.
My firends and I compared this to the Bose, plus several Logitech offerings. The iM7 takes first place for overall value, superior sound, and portability.
Spend the dough for this unit...it is soooo worth it.
Go Sox! On: 2007-08-11
love it. only issue is the new ipod nano does not fit in the insert, but we were able to modify. On: 2007-08-10
All I can say is WOW! If you are looking for crisp, clear sound from a small portable unit, this is your choice. I bought this for my daughter because she wanted to listen to her Ipod in her room and while taking a shower (hence the need for portability). My only complaint is that the subwoofer is so powerful, that when she is listening to it loud, you can feel the bass throughout the house. The spatial quality of the box is incredible. If you set it across the room, the music seems to fill the entire room with no distortion at all. The door problem that people have complained about appears legitimate. The door does appear fragile, but simple cautious use appears to solve the problem. On: 2007-08-09
Am satisfied with the sound quality. Music and lectures from my laptop and ipod can now fill the room; I have to limit the volume so as not to disturb my next room friend. I hope a cheaper carrying bag for the iM7 will be available in the near future. On: 2007-08-09
This is the best portable unit on the market for an ipod!! It has the best quality sound of any of the portable units that we looked at. I would highly recommend this product to anyone! On: 2007-08-08
They sound great! No distortion. I use them in the back yard when we have pool parties. Love them, Love them, Love them. What else can I say? Buy them you wont be disappointed. On: 2007-08-07
Sounds great. Surprising bass response. Looks classy. Couple of minor issues:
1. The little piece at the top around the buttons seems to be coming unglued a little bit. However, it can just be smoothed down with a finger and will hold for a while afterward. I dont think it really affects the appearance in a very noticeable way.
2. Have to hold down the volume button on the unit to get it to respond and if you hold it just a little too long it really jumps up in volume. The remote volume buttons seem to respond better.
Other than that it really does the job. Its nice that it can be battery operated, and I appreciate the auxillary jack, plus the fact that the iPod is cradled and relatively protected, all the while having its battery charged.
For the price I got it for (around $150) I would highly recommend it. On: 2007-08-07
This Stereo is well made, though at times my brand new iPod Video 30G "freezes" while playing music in the iM7. Neither the iPod nor the stereo ever leave my apartment. The portable carrying case on Amazon for this stereo, the one that covers the iM7 completely is close to $120.00 (8/07). This is highway robbery for a case to take the stereo on-the-go, even if the case is advertised as one made of "leather". A cheaper shoulder-harness for the stereo is about $40.00 as well, yet wont protect the iM7 from bumps to the facing of the product. For me, it is not worth the risk in damaging the player enroute to the beach, so I feel a bit stuck without a PORTABLE player as of now.
If you are looking for an iPod player that can sit on the mantle, or next to the computer, you may want to choose this one. Sound is great; though you may have to reset your iPod periodically.
Typical of electronics product design, one can tell Altec Lansing wanted to provide many options for the consumer with the design of the product; input jack, headphones and video port. Even the rubberized area in the center feels like a handle for carrying the stereo, yet something of this quality needs a protective case. I wonder if the company failed to contract adequately with another who could manufacture a quality case for the iM7 inexpensively. Or perhaps inventories of quality cases are limited, and Amazon holds their supplies in high esteem. To get the full potential out of the stereo, you may need to spend a lot more money in "accessorizing" for this stereo to take it with you in the car or on a vacation. Im simply not going to spend an additional $120 (plus shipping) in order to take it around with me. Im essentially any middle class American who wanted to be able to take a music player everywhere during my summer-- that hasnt happened because I dont want to break it.
Im looking for a company who will go THE WHOLE WAY to make a customer happy and able to use the product the way it was designed, without charging another $100 plus in what I feel are additional fees for something that should have come with the player originally. Think on it.
Hope this review helps other consumers; and I hope Amazon can make cases for this player more available at a cheaper price. Go the whole way, Altec or Amazon, go the whole way! On: 2007-07-28
I like my Altec. Good sound. Great design. Easy to navigate through, including with the remote. Can definitely recommend this (in fact, got it for one of my co-workers as a wedding gift, and she loves hers as well). On: 2007-07-27
I bought this to use in our "game room," since friends like to bring their ipods when they visit and we stream music from our computers using an Airport Express. This allows us to do both, unlike many of the ipod speakers out there. But the real highlight of this system is the sound-- it is AMAZING! The actual device is pretty small, but it pumps out the sound of a large stereo system. Not only is it loud, it is really high quality. This little system was worth every penny! On: 2007-07-27
The Remote control sucks, only works if pointed directly, Batteries last about 10-13hours which is pretty good for beach. The system goes pretty loud walking around with it made alot of heads turn. Quality is pretty good, the only thing wierd is that the boombox reacts with ipods weird sometimes... the ipod will say out of power when they really arent something weird with the boombox I seen this written in other peoples reviews. its not a big deal but just weird sometimes. On: 2007-07-26
I held off and did some extensive research to find the best portable audio system for my ipod and this was my choice. It sounds as good or better than the bose version I tested and I found it for half the price. Biggest complaint I kept finding was the lack of color choices but it really doesnt matter to me since my black ipod is pretty hidden by the docking system. My only complaint is that the remote could have a bit more functionality with my ipod but maybe that will be a new feature down the line? On: 2007-07-25
This product is a great option for a really good price, so far works great, and the best thing is the Bass, i was trying to decide for this unit or the Bosse one but for this price no kidding, i would recomend this product to anyone that loves sound quality and dare to spend less in a new or unkow brand.
JJ On: 2007-07-24
gets breat sound once you mess with the base. it is not so portable but it is a good product. On: 2007-07-23
This is a totally awesome iPod addition. The sound is amazing and its worth every penny! I love it!! On: 2007-07-21
I got this Altec Lansing iM7 for Christmas, and was very happy with the sound quality. Unfortunately, in June (just 6 months after I took it out of the box) some circuit inside broke through normal usage and it suddenly sounded all scratchy, unlistenable. I couldnt find the warranty info, and since I got it as a gift I have no receipt, so theres nothing I can do to get it fixed. Be warned, keep the warranty papers and receipt. On: 2007-07-20
I have bought 2 different brands of iPod speakers, both of which I returned to the store. I couldnt believe how horrible the sound was and I paid over $100 for each one. (one was a Memorex, one was Apple brand)
I was finally ready to shell out the big bucks and get the Bose. I read a customer review (here on Amazon) and the guy said try the Altec Lansing inMotion iM7. he said it sounds amazing, just as good as the Bose (and much cheaper) with a few more desirable features that the Bose seemed to be lacking. So I took his word for it. Im so glad I did.
Dont waste your money on trying anything else. You WILL be disappointed.
The sound on the Altec Lansing inMotion iM7 is UNBELIEVABLE.
Its hard to believe such clear (and loud) sound can come out of such a small boombox. And from what ive seen, its one of the only ones that you can actually control the Bass and Treble. The bass really is great.
The remote is the tiniest, dinkiest thing I have ever seen. Im worried whether or not it will hold up. It seems very fragile. Im going to search online for a second remote, just to have a back up handy. The other iPod speakers also seem to have similar remotes. The 2 that I returned came with remotes that were just as dinky. That would be my ONLY complaint, though. But the remote does seem to work just fine.
One more thing, be sure to shop around for prices. Ive seen it online for as much as $264 and for as little as $159. Amazon, ofcourse. I actually bought a refurbished on Amazon for $98!! Which still comes with a 1 year factory warranty. What a STEAL!!
Going to go listen to my Altec Lansing inMotion iM7 !!! On: 2007-07-20
Un-bloody-believable product. And we have been through many looking for the ideal patio, poolside iPod player. This is it....it is weather resistant, runs on AC or batteries, has a remote and works GREAT! On: 2007-07-15
All reviews had this unit rated highly and they are correct. The sound quality is superb and you can ramp up quite nicely outside on the deck during parties and barbecues (as I do). My Ipod crashes frequently during excessively loud playback. That is the only negative to using the iM7 for this purpose. On: 2007-07-14
I love the sound quality the im7 produces. My only complaint is that the ipod freezes up about once an hour give or take when playing continuously. I dont know if it is something Im doing or if its just something you have to deal with. As I said the sound quality is awesome, I just wish I didnt have to reset the ipod quite so often. On: 2007-07-13
Great sound. Better than Bose since it has jacks to plug in other equipment. But the best part is Altec Lansings customer service. We had a problem with ours (we think our kid caused it) and they did not hesitate to send us a new one. Great service and warranty... On: 2007-07-11
Wow.
I am seriously impressed. I live in Mexico and was intending to buy some speakers for my ipod. After researching the available models I decided on the iM7.
I knew the price in the U.S., and was disappointed when I saw that the price locally was over twice as much. I would just have to wait for my next trip to the States.
Well, I decided to check whether Amazon could ship it to me. It could! and the price seems reasonable! Including the shipping and import duties!
I made my order and saw delivery would be in 2 days. I was very skeptical. In fact, delivery was the following day. Next day delivery on an international shipment. WOW.
One problem. Despite having paid an "Import Duties Deposit" to cover taxes and duties, DHL charged me aproximately the same amount upon delivery.
After contacting Amazon, they promptly refunded the "Import Duties Deposit"
Very professional, quick, service.
Oh, and the speakers? Everything they are supposed to be. Wonderful sound. Great value.

We own the Bose player but wanted smaller or portable players for other locations in our home. We tried and returned two players (Coby CS - MP93 for $46.99 and another Altec Lansing in the $50.00 price range.) Both were very tinny and had no options to control the sound qulaity. We took a chance on this one and we are completely blown away! Our big concern, considering the price, was it as good as the Bose. Well, it is so much better that we are considering selling our Bose and buying another one of these models. The moment we played our firt song our jaws dropped and we were immediately up and dancing cuz the sound just was so good you couldnt help but want to dance to it!
The base is robust and the high range sound it crisp and not tinny at all. The remote lets you control both of these qualities where the others, including the Bose, do not. Its a bit larger and heavier than all the others but given the fullness of sound and the capable volume you would expect it to be much larger, like an amp!! The remote is small and must be direted to the top of the player so if youre sitting anywhere below the top of the unit you may not hit the right spot to make it work. But this is so minor I wouldnt even label it a problem or drawback, but more a reflection of how lazy and comfortable weve all gotten at being able to control everything around us with out needing to even lift our arms higher! We highly recommend this product. Go for it and ENJOY! On: 2007-07-09
We love this system, its very portable and the sound is fantastic whether indoors or out. I would highly recommend this player to anyone looking for a portable ipod player. On: 2007-07-07
The sound is excellent, we have had it playing since we got it.
We have not used the remote yet and always have it plugged in so Im not sure about the battery life
I agree with other people who have reviewed this product. The door is very cheaply made.
The first time we used it, our ipod froze. My husband went onto the ipod web-site to troubleshoot the problem. There are 3 suggestions on the web-site for how to fix this problem. The first 2 did not work, but the third one did. I am not sure what he did to fix the problem but it hasnt happened again. We also have not taken the ipod out of the system yet. We have had it since Fathers day.
I would say that this product is well worth the $$$ On: 2007-07-06
Love music ** Must have this. The best portable speakers money can probably buy. NO regrets. Simply the best.. ** On: 2007-07-06
I gave this as a gift to my husband who had wanted the Bose system. We are both very happy with this audio system and I am happy that I did not spend the extra money on the Bose. I did read reviews about the latch door being fragile and it does seem to be. I cautioned my husband to be careful from the beginning so we have not had any problems.
I love that it will accommodate my husbands iPod and when hes not around I can put my iPod Mini in the system. The sound is awesome. More features on the remote would have been nice, but not necessary.
The two things my husband would have liked (and Im not sure if other systems offer this) is to be able to listen to the radio and for the iPod to be able to charge when you are using batteries as opposed to the adapter.
Overall, I highly recommend this product and felt it was an excellent purchase for the money that was spent. On: 2007-07-05
Love music ** Must have this. The best portable speakers money can probably buy. NO regrets. Simply the best.. ** On: 2007-07-04
I needed something to play my tunes outside while I was gardening. I really like this one. Others I have tried were tinny sounding. This one sounds really good, nice little remote works great, and I use it all the time. I love it and am glad i chose this one. On: 2007-07-03
This is a very reasonably priced player with great overall sound and excellent bass response...it sounds better if its not stuck in a corner as the bass spreads out around the unit. Its lightweight and Ive yet to change the batteries. The remote works fine and I like the slot in the back of the unit for storage lessening the chance of loss.
The only thing to watch out for is you must remember that turning off the unit only puts your iPod into stand-by...it doesnt shut it down. This is noted in the documentation so I was aware of it but have forgotten a couple times. On: 2007-06-29
This product arrived yesterday, and I was very impressed with it. The sound quality can really hit those high notes well with superior quality, and it can get really loud. Im one of those annoying college kids who likes loud music, and I was very impressed. I even tried playing Hysteria by Muse (which is my song if I want to test the bass), and it hit all of the notes perfectly. I would highly recommend this product to all who are interested in getting a sound system. The price is fantastic, and I would certainly buy another one if I need to.
However, like all good viewers, you probably want to hear about the flaws. Here is my personal opinion on the product.
1. Remote is annoying since it has the Play/Pause, FF, and RW buttons not work. Every other button works but those dont, and it just bothers me. I wish Altec Lansing fixed this or just didnt have those buttons included on the remote.
2. The door just doesnt fit with my 30 gig iPod. I tried examining the various "fitters" for different sized iPods and none worked. I try not to be stupid, but none of them fit. They included some for the nano and other smaller ones, but I guess my 30 gig was that middle size that just didnt fit snugly. Whenever I closed the door (which so far is working fine) the iPod fell to teh back and the sound quit. To offset this problem, I just folded a piece of paper and pushed it in the back so that the iPod is pushed forward. Now I can close the door and still experience perfect sound!
The iPod hasnt frozen for me, even at the highest sound volume, the door hasnt broken (just that one slight problem), and I havent tested the battery length. Overall, Im very impressed with the product and dont think that the flaws lower my impression to a 4-star. I definitely recommend this product to anyone who likes good quality with wide ranges of volume. Im definitely using this for my dorm room. On: 2007-06-27
Purchased system, nice looking, functional portability, excellent sound. However, my ipod kept freezing after playing a few songs (usually 5 or 6). Looked up problem on blogs and determined that Apple says it is Altecs problem and Altec says vice-a-versa. I did discover that when I use an extenstion cord the freezing problem was eliminated. Go figure. On: 2007-06-27
Just what I needed for the pool and music on the run. The sound is surprisingly good, as the reviews said it would be. Good lows, clear highs, powerful volume. Havent used it enough to see how fast it eats batteries, but dont they all? I plan on using the AC cord as much as possible, so that wasnt a big concern going in anyway. On: 2007-06-27
The Altec Lansing in Motion iM7 is a fantastic little ipod station that is easily portable. We have purchased three of them to date, since we have been so happy with it. My college age daughter loves it for the apartment, my older daughter brings it to the barn when she is working, and my husband uses his in the office. I recommend it highly. In addition, I recommend Amazon as the provider. I ordered our last product at 2am on 5-17-07. By 4:30pm of the same day, I received an e-mail that the product had shipped, and it was at my door on the very next afternoon! What more can you ask for? On: 2007-06-25
I bought the iM7 system in April 2007 and like it from the beginning. It has decent sound quality. But in May 2007 for some reason the A/C power supply malfunctioned. So I called up Altec Lansings customer service and placed an order for a new power supply on May 7th 2007. Its June 25th today and I have not yet received my power supply. I have called them 8 times over last 7 weeks and every time they sympathize with me but nothing gets done. I dont want to spend money on buying annoying batteries, which they are not ready to reimburse me for anyways. Is it going to take 2 months everytime I have a problem with this product. My final words. Good product, but just hope nothing goes wrong with it. On: 2007-06-22
I bought the iM7 after reading several reviews, and have to say it has exceeded my expectations. It sounds great and doesnt get tinny or distorted when you turn it up. The small size and ease of portability are also plusses. The only minor complaint I have is the remote is on the small size and doesnt seem to have a lot of range. But overall its a great product at a great price. On: 2007-06-16
Purchased the system and it froze my iPod on several occassions. Most recently, a friends iPod was also frozen/stuck when the audio system was used. The last time I used the system, it froze the iPod every hour. We played at moderate levels, so volume should not have been a factor.
This is my only complaint/problem with the product. Contacted customer service to determine exchange or return.
Otherwise, easy to use, excellent sound with good bass, remote is helpful. Compared to other portable iPod speaker systems, this one had the best price for the features. The sound is really superior for a system of this size and price range. On: 2007-06-14
I just recently purchased my IPod (30GB Video) and knew I would want to listen to it at work so I wanted to get a docking speaker system for it (I hate earbuds).
I pored over the online reviews of the various products on the market, and knowing that Altec Lansing made quality products, I decided to go with this unit.
The first time I used it, I was completely amazed at the sound quality and the volume range of this unit. Really, the only other comparable product in its class is the Bose SoundDock and to me, theres really no comparison considering the more than triple the price of the Bose SD, especially since the sound quality difference between the two is really indiscernable.
I whole-heartedly recommend this unit to anyone looking for a speaker system for their IPod. You wont be sorry. On: 2007-06-11
Tested all of the top ipod docking systems (Bose Soundock, etc...) and this is by far the best sounding system. On: 2007-06-06
All I can say is that if you love bass this is the best I have heard in this category. My husband has a bose but I much more prefer the sound of this boombox by a million. On: 2007-06-05
Guys/Gals,
The Altec Lansing inMotion iM7 Portable Audio System is truly amazing for the price point. Hec, I think the BOSE and other more expensive units CANNOT compair against it. My son set this up and called me into the room and clicked Play on the remote. I could not believe my ears! All the negative feedback (which is few and far inbetween) is just not an accurate description if taken in context. For about $150 bucks this unit is just unequal in sound and clarity. In high volume (I want that nice volume for my Latin Jazz tunes) it does a great job. We played John Mayers Continuum at our family BBQ and everyone could not believe the great sound this unit generates. The first thing out of there mouth was... WOW! Another thing, the bass and midrange on this baby is just outstanding! Again, if you want a great sounding unit at a great price, this is the unit for you. Just check it out and you will hear what I am talking about. Amazon is great at making sure you are 100% satisfied. (Man - do I sound like a sales person or what?) I am really impressed.
I hope this helps those that, like me, are a little hesitant because of all the low quality junk that is out there and being promoted as a value. THIS IS BOTH A FANTASTIC SOUND AND A GREAT VALUE. Thanks to the folks at Altec Lansing for putting out a great product!
Just one beware: The first units that were released had a problem with the latching component that closes the enclosure the holds the iPod. This has been fixed after a recall. Be careful with the untis on eBay because most of the units sold there indicate they suffer from this problem in small print when they are honest. In my opinion, Amazon is the best place to purchas a new one. PEACE! On: 2007-05-31
Best accessory I ever bought for my iPod, these speakers are huge and amazing! On: 2007-05-30
I was skeptical when i was looking for a portable player for my IPOD. I needed something that could push an outdoor party where electricity isnt readily available. I took the chance and bought this product, i just got it today and damn, it is great! The sound is awesome, loud, clear, crisp, and just simply awesome. I would never have imagined such great sound out of such a small box but they hit a home run on this one. One downside, be carefull when putting the battery in the remote. If you insert it wrong it can be rather pesky trying to get it back out! Other than that, i would definitely reccomend this product!!!! On: 2007-05-30
The unit sounds really good. My neighbor bought one from a department store that looked like the IM7 for $80. It looks similar but it doesnt sound nearly as good so I guess you get what you pay for. The IM7 is a bit bulky compared to some models and the remote doesnt work that well so I gave it a 4 instead of a 5. On: 2007-05-29
Ive had my iM7 for several months now, and i would easily give it 5 stars if it werent for the design of the docking door. I felt right away that it would be an issue, and sure enough, within 2 months of very light use the door wont stay shut. Fortunately the unit still plays with the door open, but watching any video is awkward. Hopefully Altec Lansing is adressing this issue. On: 2007-05-28
I recently purchased this as a gift for my iPod-loving husband. Weve been using it for a little over two months now, and we are absolutely thrilled with its performance. The sound quality is crystal clear, and the operation is very easy/user-friendly. Its highly portable and small enough that its not at all cumbersome. When comparing this to some of the other iPod sound docks, once you factor in price, theres no contest. The Altec Lansing iM7 wins HANDS DOWN. Great, great product. On: 2007-05-22
Now of course my review is based on *just* receiving the iM7, but first impressions (aesthetically and acoustically), I couldnt be more impressed. Its out of the box and boomin in moments; its effortless to understand, gorgeous to look at and equally giving in the sound department.
I bought this after getting knee deep in the portable boombox segment. I needed a portable player that was equally at home on the boat and on my kitchen countertop. The battery option was integral for me (camping, hiking, boating, etc.)
I do hope the silver screening stays intact as it spends time with me; I cant help but wonder if dents and marks are inevitable with this design. If thats the worse of it, Ill gladly accept. On: 2007-05-19
The sound in this speaker is amazing, I think it sounds better than other more expensive speakers...
The bass is incredible and the looks make it a high tech looking equipment... The only down side is that the handle isnt placed well, when you pick it up it slighlty slips so you have to pick it up with both hands to be safe, and also the color only matches with the white ipod, it looks kinda wierd with the black one...
In summary, best one ive heard so far, and ive heard quite a bit ! by: profphi On: 2007-05-18
If you are looking for a portable audio system...this is the only one to buy. The sound quality is incredible. It is amazing how loud you can play your music (I dont, but my daughter does...lol) without losing any quality whatsoever. The bass will rattle your floors and walls while the treble can shatter glass. This is the best!
Beethoven would have played his music on this if he had had one! I certainly play his music with the Altec and it never sounded better! On: 2007-05-17
I am very pleased with the iM7. Sound quality is very good, even when played at a higher volume. The remote doesnt have much range to it, but adequate. Taken care of, this product should last quite a long time. On: 2007-05-17
Really really nice sound for such a small size speaker system - the iPod dock is just a little too hard to open and use. On: 2007-05-15
Dont hestitate to buy this product, I bought it for a pool party I hosted at home, 200 guests, the sound was LOUD, enough to keep the party alive. The sound is vibrant, and the best part is that all my friends can hook up their Ipods to it and listen to their songs to.
Buy it, you wont regret it. On: 2007-05-13
WOW, If you are looking for a portable ipod player, look no further.
The sound is excellent with great bass and treble adjustments available to suit your music and listening moods. With all of the players on the market, you can spend a whole lot more and get a lot less. The remote is icing on the cake. On: 2007-05-13
Excellent product with convenient features. Works well as a portable box with the carrying case. On: 2007-05-12
Many of the reviews here tout the excellent sound and I concur.
As for criticisms about the remote, smallness, easy to lose etc. I velcroed it on the back of my reciever remote so I cant lose it (or lose both of them at the same time. I have a 4G ipod and have no problem with freezing up. Make sure it is in the cradle firmly and snug up the lever behind. I keep my volume at a reasonable level and suggest if you need to excelerate your eventual deafness rent some rappers tricked out Honda and park it in your living room. 5 stars for good sound and price. On: 2007-05-12
We bought this for our dance teacher for her birthday, so she wont have to lug boom box, tapes, CDs, etc., around to lessons, shows, etc., and then fumble through all the tapes and CDs. It, along with the IPod she bought, is the perfect solution! She can start a song from out on the floor with her tiny remote control, and the music is instantly accessible. We selected this one because it was rated so highly for quality of sound and overall quality, and we are not disappointed. It is a great product, and it is simplifying our teachers life in a really useful way. Some people asked me why I didnt get one of the cheaper models they see advertised here and there, and I had to explain that there are many cheesy products out there, but we wanted something reliable and with great sound. And the price was right at Amazon! We are optimistic that this product will give her many years of great service. We also bought the carrying case made for it, which is perfect. On: 2007-05-07
I love this thing. Its got decent sound, looks nice and is real easy to use. Great price for far better sound than I expected. On: 2007-04-25
I wear myself out researching products, reading all the reviews I can find. Thats true of this product as well. My homework was well rewarded. I simply cant believe the sound quality of the iM7. The other reviewers give excellent details, so Im just going to tell you, unless theres some odd other thing it needs to do for you, then BUY THIS ONE. On: 2007-04-19
I have owned this ipod dock for about 4 months. Ive never had any problems with it. I would also like to say that the remote is not nearly as poor as others have said. It has at least a 15 ft range, which is fine for small rooms and dorms. My only complaint about the remote is that it is infrared, thus it must be pointed directly at its receiver.
Pros: Attractive cylindrical shape. Very good sound (one of the only all-in-one ipod docks with a built in subwoofer). I am a Bose fan but I have to admit this blows the Bose sound dock out of the water in both versatility and quality (and price). Blue LED power light. Able to be battery powered (portable). AUX jack for non ipod devices. Multiple outlet adapters for travel. A RCA and S-Video out that allows you to view your ipod pictures & your movies on a TV.
Cons: Kind of large. Awkward ipod loading mechanism. Doesnt have an audio out, so have to listen to music & movies through the dock. No display to indicate volume, treble, or bass. No USB connection to connect to itunes. A little too heavy to be truly portable On: 2007-04-18

After much research, we purchased this over the Bose system. Weve had it for about 4 months now, and have been very pleased with the purchase. The system has a nice modern look and sounds fantastic! Its a bit heavy for regular moving, but for occasional replacement, the handle works well. The mini converter also works well. The sound has been very impressive, even at high levels. Im very happy with this system and would recommend it with enthusiasm. On: 2007-04-06
The sound is great as previous reviews have stated. Its lightweight and relatively compact which makes it easy to move from room to room.
BUT, I have several issues with this dock. First, it freezes up my ipod. Often. Naturally, it didnt start doing it until right after my "we dont accept returns after 7 days" was up. But, it literally started within 2 weeks of owning it. I called AL and just got the run around. I left several messages with SEVERAL people and no one returned my calls. POOR customer service. Anyway, its extremely annoying because I have to wait for the battery to die down in the ipod before I can do anything with it again.
Also, if you can, get a dock without a door. This door is a joke. You have to push it in to pop it open. Of course, it never pops open. Thats why a lot of people complain that they dont even have the door on it anymore. Some have to break it off to get their ipods out.
So... great sound quality, but be careful. If you have a problem, dont expect to get any assistance from AL. On: 2007-04-06
Ive got to tell you I was going to buy the iLive but after reading the reviews on it I decided to go with this one. Im so glad I did because it sounds so much better than the other could ever hope to. Also I was mad that I had to order an adapter online for my nano but then found out that it was completely free without even having to pay for shipping. This system sounds amazing I wish it had a LCD screen but the remote works just fine. On: 2007-04-02
i have the bose sounddock speakers and just bought the im7 speakers for college. these are so much better than the sounddock!
The bass is amazing and the design is a lot nicer
also, its a lot more solid a durable because of the design unlike the Bose sounddock (the base seems to break a lot)
I actually bought one of these for fathers day as well! On: 2007-04-02
Working in a trade, Ive had many portable radios/players over the years and am willing to pay the price for high quality sound. After listening to a friends unit several days for many hours I concluded that the iM7 is the best sounding portable player I have ever heard, at any price. On: 2007-04-01
This system delivers solid sound for the money. It differs from other systems with a very good subwoofer presence. The reason I didnt give it 5 stars is because the remote does not seem to operate fully from long distances. There are also at times noticeable vibrations heard when the system is thumping out bold bass lines on certain songs. However, it does not detract from the overall quality. Unlike other Ipod speaker systems you can adjust the treble and bass individually. Trust me, its nice to have. Overall, you should be pleased with the systems portability and sound quality. On: 2007-03-28
ITS JUST THE BEST OF THE BEST...AUDIO QUALITY I EVER HEAR. On: 2007-03-26
This item has great sound quality. I didnt expect much because of the size, but it fills my large living room, and whole house for that matter, with great sound. No hissing heard like in other reviews. The remote is small...I heard some complaints in other reviews, and yeah...its a very simple remote. But you have an Ipod with at least 30 GB, just let it play and put the remote down.
Only bad part about my purchase, paid $149.00 (On Sale) at Comp USA...should have bought it at Amazon. On: 2007-03-20
This is a great unit. I use it almost everyday at work for a class that I teach. Good sound and well designed. On: 2007-03-19
Much Cheaper than Bose Sound System, great sound, looks awesome! Easy setup, adjustable for various Ipods. Cheapest price around at Amazon. Delivery quick. On: 2007-03-16
This system produces a very good sound but lacks a sophisticated style. Resembling a boombox it may appeal more to children than adults. On: 2007-03-15
I returned this item for the speaker hiss. Who can listen to these things with that transformer hiss ever present? I purchsed the original inmotion back in the day and love it. I cant tell the thing is even on between songs or in quiet portions. I was looking for an upgrade and found the opposite.
Pros: Nice design. Hides the ipod away from most damage although my new nano required a mail in adapter.
Cons: Mediocre audio quality. Fragile door system. Mine didnt break as most complain of, but it didnt seat properly and was poorly made. On: 2007-03-14
Good bass. Functional remote. Small enough to carry around. Loud enough to rock. On: 2007-03-13
This speaker system delivers a delightful and strong sound from your ipod or and music source that you connect to it. Well worth the price with satisfaction for the money! On: 2007-03-12
Very good sound but it constantly and consistantly freezes my iPod to the point that it has to be sent back to Apple for repair/replacement. In fact I have 2 iM7s and they both do it, to any iPod. I dont use either anymore except every once in awhile when i am working in the basement or the garage, and within minutes - same thing: iPod freeze. On: 2007-03-11
Great price, good performance, good value for the money. Decent bass response, good treble, remote easy to use for adjustments. iPod fits in there easily without having to use any adapters. Wish it came in black to match my iPod, but Ill just have to deal. Wanted the Apple unit, but couldnt justify $350. Buy it today. On: 2007-03-10
This product still hasnt arrived - 6 weeks after it was ordered!!
When it does I will share my view. On: 2007-03-10
I bought the Altec lansing inMotion as well because of all the good CNET reviews, and it was suppose to be a great value for the sound. Well, its not such a great value if you cant use it because its causing youre ipod to freeze all the time! Dont get me wrong, the sound and base are great (4 out of 5 stars) when its working, but for quality and reliability I give this product a 1 out of 5. As the user said below, its only great so long as you dont turn it up loud and/or play music with a lot of base. Worst of all this is a KNOWN issue with Altec, so its poor design! Dont the people at Altec consider the fact that people that like a lot of base are going to play their music loud???? How can they tell us not to turn the volume up too loud or just refrain from playing music with a lot of base??? I would NOT recommend this product to people that enjoy bumping their music loud, lame! Then each and every time this happens, you have to wait until your ipod runs out of battery before it works again, so I typically have to wait until the next day before I can use it again. The freezing happens at least 1 out of every 2-3 times I use it. On: 2007-03-09
Really great system. Some people say that its a little heavy and the carry handle is a bit uncomfortable and awkward but suits my purposes. The little thing really gets the party started and my other friends have bought themselves the same model after hearing it.For the price , you are definitely getting your moneys worth and it looks absolutely great!!   | | |
