This seemed like a nifty idea, I could read the LCD just fine, however, the unit only worked when it wanted to, which was next to never. It also easily fell apart when attempting to remove it. On: 2005-09-23
If you have a car without a built-in compass, you could certainly do worse than the model 29001. Its mostly out of sight except for the display and properly indicates which cardinal poit your car is pointed at.
My two quibbles:
The backlight stays on for a very short time - but since its battery powered, this makes sense.
There is no provision to adjust the compass for declination. Since I live north of Seattle and the declination here is >20 degrees, I consider this a problem. On: 2005-08-19
The compass on this product seems to work fine--accurate and easy enough to initialize. Unfortunately, the display is useless--you cant read the tiny LCD letters! This is especially true in dim or backlit conditions. And at night, the blue backlight does nothing--and I mean nothing--to illuminate the directional letters (which are poorly formed to begin with--an "N" looking rather like a misformed "W"). To add insult, the backlight must be turned on manually by pressing a button--and then only stays on for 2-3 seconds at a time. To navigate would require taking your eyes off the road constantly to push button repeatedly and squint like crazy in your 2 second window of opportunity. Its dangerous.
End result--worthless at best. A killer at worst. I returned mine immediately. Too bad.
